Steele Farm Needs Xmas Tree Volunteers Volunteer Morning at Steele Farm in Boxborough will be on Saturday, November 18 from 9am to 12 noon. The day is organized by the Steele Farm Advisory Committee members Ed Whitcomb, Bruce Hager, Jeanne Kangas, Jim Moss and Sarah Murphy. Help is needed to trim the Christmas trees to keep the trees healthy and available for sale, and to trim around the farmhouse, barn and icehouse. All friends of Steele Farm are asked to join the Committee in the tasks. Volunteers should gather at the Farm at 484 Middle Road for assignments at 9AM. If you have one, bring a spade-like shovel or clippers. The Committee will direct you to the places needed. This volunteer effort is critical

to assure the public that Steele Farm will have Christmas trees for purchase in the future, and that the building foundations are kept neat and attractive. Be a Friend of Steele Farm and help. Friends of Steele Farm window stickers will be given to each volunteer. For more information: Ed Whitcomb at 978263-2214 or Jeanne Kangas at 978-263-8594.

Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church and the church generously pays for our telephone answering service. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Local clergy and social

Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant

A complete list of items can be obtained by emailing the museum at info@spellman.org. The program is being coordinated with the Support Our Troops organization located in Stoneham. There will also be arts and crafts activities with stamps for the children as well as stamp hunts, puzzles and games for prizes. All children will receive a free packet of stamps plus tips

about how to start a stamp collection. Free refreshments. Donated items can also be brought to the Museum on Nov 9, 11 and 12 during Museum hours, noon to 4:00. For more information call 617-784-5838.

Donate A Thanksgiving Dinner Basket The Maynard Food Pantry will once again be providing Thanksgiving dinner baskets to families in need within our community this holiday season. In the past, families, organizations, groups and companies have generously donated dinner baskets consisting of a frozen turkey or canned ham together with a combination of bagged potatoes, fresh squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, canned or fresh vegetables, apples, oranges, fruit juice, packaged rolls and packaged desserts. Thinking about a family of 6 when putting together the basket is a good guide. We would greatly appreciate similar donations this year so that the Maynard Food Pantry can provide these wonderful gifts

New Saturday Gentle Yoga Class At Emerson Hospital Come discover why more Americans are going to yoga classes like never before, and why doctors are sending their patients to yoga classes. Did you know that research has shown a yoga practice to be more effective than physical therapy for lower back pain? That there was a 22 percent improvement in aerobic capacity, improving six out of seven measures of respiratory function, according to studies? That new studies show that it significantly improves bone strength in the spine and hips? That it can supercharge your brain, increasing memory and focus? And that it slows aging? GENTLE YOGA at Emerson Hospital IS the perfect way for brand new students to explore the practice of yoga. It is also suitable for those with a tight body, stiffness, injury or in recovery from illness or surgery – or simply in need of some deep relaxation. This class covers all the basics so that your yoga experience

is comfortable, beneficial, and therapeutic. Taught by an experienced yoga instructor with over 15 years experience teaching yoga, Laraine Lippincott’s Gentle Yoga class is one of the most popular classes at the Emerson Wellness Center, and she was featured on WCVB’s Chronicle last fall. With clear and detailed instructions, you will build strength, flexibility, enhance immunity, calm the mind, and enliven and deepen the breath. She always offers modifications to every posture so there is no way that you can’t receive benefits. It’s all about YOU and custom-fitting the yoga to YOUR BODY. In the Gentle Yoga class, students will learn a variety of foundational postures with correct alignment: standing, seated, on all fours, and lying down. We focus on increasing full body flexibility, strengthening the spine and core, and treating and preventing tight hips and back pain. There is a new class on Saturdays at 11:30 beginning November 18, so this is a great opportunity to get started. This new Gentle Yoga will

begin on Saturday, November 18, 9:30 to 10:45. The session will run for six classes. (Please note that the on-line schedule erroneously lists the class as beginning on November 11.) Classes are held at the beautiful yoga studio at the Emerson Wellness Center for Mind and Body, 310 Baker Road, Concord, MA (not at the hospital). Also note that because of the cumulative nature of the class, the instructor is not allowing dropins. You can register on-line by going to emersonwellness.org and plug in “Gentle Yoga”.

Veterans Day In Maynard Since our country’s founding more than 241 years ago, peacetime or wartime, veterans have put others first. That’s what veterans do. Veterans Day is a day that we put Veterans first. The Maynard Veterans Council will hold our annual Veterans Day parade on Saturday, November 11, 2017. All veterans are welcome to march with us to be joined by

civic organizations, including youth groups. We march to honor all those who served and sacrificed within our community and nationwide. The parade gathers at the Mill & Main lower Sudbury Street parking lot (across the street from St. Bridget’s Church) at 10:30AM and steps off at 11:00AM. The march loops downtown Maynard proceeding down Main Street turning onto Summer Street stopping at Memorial Park for our commemoration ceremonies. Upon completion the march returns via Nason Street to the parking lot. In case of bad weather, the parade will be cancelled.

Seeking Deployed Military To Support The Acton C.R.A.F.T. 4-H Club is actively seeking personal contact with deployed or soon to be deployed military personnel. Since Desert Storm, our leader has been sending notes and tokens of home to those deployed over-

seas. For more than 20 years, the Acton C.R.A.F.T. 4-H Club has taken on this community service project as one of their main ways to reach out to the community. The children in the club pack baggies with some goodies like chocolate, cookies, and gummies. The most important part of each baggie, though, is the personal note of encouragement and thanks written by one of the 4-H’ers, ages 5-18. We pack anywhere from 25 to 100 baggies into a box and ship it to a “point person” who is deployed. We try to send boxes out every month or two so that our military know we care about them and appreciate what they do. These people continue our mission of reaching out by passing the baggies to friends and comrades, especially those who do not tend to receive mail. Our club is usually able to support 5 or 6 different deployed men and/or women and their respective units. Right now, we do not know anyone who is deployed, since the three men we were supporting last year have all returned home! We are reaching out to the public to get into contact with deployed men and

Historian To Speak In Concord On Race, Racism Historian and anti-racism activist David Billings will speak about his award-winning memoir and popular history, “Deep Denial: The Persistence of White Supremacy in United States History and Life,” from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 5 at First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road. Billings grew up in the Deep South under “Jim Crow” laws that enforced whites-only drinking fountains and restrooms. In the small-town Mississippi of his working-class white boyhood, he recalls black people

visiting a white family’s house were expected to go around to the back door and wait to be met in the yard. Billings works with institutions across the country that seek to undo centuries of tacit assumptions about who people are based on the color of their skin. On Nov. 5, he invites white listeners to see themselves as enmeshed in racialized institutional structures so basic to everyday life that

Rebound: The Chris Herren Story Please join our sponsors Acton-Boxborough United Way, Acton-Boxborough Regional PTSO, Danny’s Place Youth Services, and the Acton Health Department as we welcome former NBA player Chris Herren to the ABRSD Family Learning Series on Monday, November 20, 2017, 7 PM at ABRHS Auditorium. Chris will tell of his descent into addiction, miraculous recovery, and new life mission: to share his story in the hopes of reaching at least one person and making a difference in his or her life.

saturday, november 4, 2017

Herren, a basketball legend from Fall River, dreamed of playing for his hometown team, the Celtics. An All-American, he broke scoring records, was recruited by top colleges, was featured in Sports Illustrated, and became the focus of an acclaimed book, Fall River Dreams. Chris realized his ambition of playing in the NBA when he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1999 and was traded to the Celtics after his rookie season, but he lost it all due to substance abuse. Alcohol and drug free since August 1, 2008, Herren has refocused his life to put sobriety and family above all else. He shares his harrowing story

The Central Mass Railroad: Beyond Clinton The Central Mass Railroad with Ed Sterling Part II: Beyond Clinton Wednesday, November 15th at 7:00 PM Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge, Visitor Center 680 Hudson Road, Sudbury Ed Sterling will discuss the history of the Central Massachusetts Railroad, known as “The Central Mass” from its beginnings in the

post Civil War years to its sad end in 1980. Using both physical and digital maps, and many photos, he will initially take the audience on an imaginary train ride from Boston out to Clinton. Stopping at the various stations and depots, we will see the stations as they were, where they were located, and as they appear today where possible. There will be focus on the Wachusett Dam and Reservoir and their impact on the Central Mass railroad, and how the railroad was rerouted around this major project using a tunnel and a viaduct. Then the journey will continue through central Massachusetts beyond Clinton out to Northampton, with a discussion of the impact of the Great Depression, and the Hurricane of 1938. The Central Mass Railroad tracks pass along the southern board of the Assabet River NWR. Changing The World From The Inside Out: Spiritual Wisdom For Turbulent Times Sunday, November 12, 7:00 p.m., Congregation Beth Elohim, 133 Prospect Street, Acton, welcomes Rabbi David Jaffe to speak on Changing the World from the Inside Out: Spiritual Wisdom for Turbulent Times. In answer to the question, “How do we draw on the rich spiritual resources of Judaism to support and inform the work of Tikkun Olam (fixing the world)?”, Rabbi Jaffe’s presentation distills centuries of Jewish wisdom about cultivating and refining the inner life into a program for build-

ing the qualities necessary for engaging in the work of sustainable change. Through explorations of deep motivation, inner drive, and traits like trust and anger, this presentation engages the audience in questions of selfdevelopment and transformation, demonstrating that sustainable Tikkun Olam is indeed a spiritual practice. Rabbi David Jaffe is the author of Changing the World from the Inside Out: A Jewish Approach to Personal and Social Change, winner of the 2016 National Jewish Book Award for Contemporary Jewish Life. He is the Founder and Principal of Kirva Consulting, which helps individuals and organizations access spiritual wisdom for creating healthy, sustainable relationships and communities. FPC Sunday Service

Britten War Requiem

On Nov. 5, First Parish Church of Stow & Acton (FPC), Unitarian Universalist, welcomes guest minister Andrea Greenwood. “Up and Down the Mountain,” her meditation on the meaning of mountains in our religious life, was prompted by a summertime hike up Mount Katahdin and the 200th anniversary of Thoreau’s birth. Services will be held at 9 and 11 a.m., with coffee hours following each service. Andrea Greenwood is a UU minister who has served congregations in Atlanta, GA, and Watertown, MA, where she currently lives with her husband, the Rev. Mark Harris. They have produced four sons and one book together, “An Introduction to the Unitarian and Universalist Traditions.” FPC is located at 353 Great Rd., Stow. Its facilities are wheelchair accessible. Child care is provided for children 3 and under and older children are welcome to attend religious education classes. For more information, call 978-897-8149 or visit www.fpc-stow-acton.org.

On Sunday, November 12, Sounds of Stow Chorus will join the Worcester Chorus, the Salisbury Singers, the Master Singers of Worcester and the Worcester Children’s Chorus for a rare performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem at Mechanics Hall in Worcester. The performance starts at 4pm, with a pre-concert talk at 3pm. Tickets are available at musicworcester.org. This stunning work, widely considered one of the 20th century musical masterpieces, is rarely heard, due to the size and scope of the forces involved in presenting it: It is scored for two orchestras, large chorus, children’s chorus, soprano, baritone, and tenor soloists. The November 12th performance has been two years in the making, and is only possible because of the collaborative efforts of the groups involved. In the War Requiem, Britten, a pacifist and conscientious objector in World War II, laces poetry of World War I British poet Wilfred Own through passages of the traditional Latin Mass for the Dead. It is a powerful work

with a timeless message, and it is best experienced in a live performance for the full emotional impact to be felt. Britten composed the piece for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962, as the original 14th-century cathedral had been destroyed in a World War II bombing raid. The new cathedral was built next to the ruins of the old structure, which were preserved as a reminder of conflict and the search for peace. Given the complexity of the composition, the participating ensembles have engaged a guest conductor, John Daly Goodwin, to lead the ensemble.

Maestro Goodwin is the conductor laureate of the New York Choral Society and has extensive experience leading Britten’s War Requiem. The performance also features soloists Esther Heideman, Frank Kelley, and Craig Irvin. Sounds of Stow is supported in part by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council as administered by the local Cultural councils of ActonBoxborough, Bolton, Hudson, Maynard, and Stow.

Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. The Little Stars group of Theatre with a Twist will be performing this new twist on the classic movie Elf for two weekends!!! Show times are Saturday November 4th at 4 PM, and Sunday, November 5th at 2 PM. The following weekend will be Friday, November 10th at 7 PM, Saturday November 11 at 4 PM, and Sunday, November 12th at 2 PM. This will give you plenty of opportunity to see these delightful young people singing and dancing. Elf The Musical Jr is about an elf named Buddy. Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy

action unlimited embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity. Faced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. Theatre with a Twist is located at 278 Great Road, Acton, MA (behind Siesta Sleepworks). TWT is a non-profit 501c (3) charity theatre company serving adults and children.

munity-wide suicide prevention training on Tuesday, December 5th, 7-9 p.m., The Gallery at Village Works (2nd Floor), 525 Massachusetts Ave, West Acton. Question, Persuade and Refer teaches 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone for help. By taking QPR you will learn to; recognize the warning sides of suicide, know how to offer hope, and know how to get help and save a life. Join us in saying YES to saving the life of a friend, colleague, child, sibling or neighbor. Please email Deborah Garfield at The Eliot Center, dgarfield@eliotchs. org for information or to register.

First Artifacts In Place At National Army Museum (NAPSI)—The National Museum of the United States Army is under construction, and four artifacts are already in place. These unique pieces of Army history are so large that crews pre-positioned them early in the construction process so the Museum’s walls could be built around them. The first two artifacts were the M3 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicle that led the 2003 charge from Kuwait to Baghdad, and the M4A3E2 Sherman “Jumbo” Tank, known as “Cobra King,” which was the first tank to break through German lines during World War II’s Battle of the Bulge. Crews then installed an LCVP, one of the few remaining Higgins boats certified to

have carried troops ashore at Normandy on D-Day. The fourth artifact, a Renault FT-17 Tank known as “5 of Hearts,” made history in World War I when it led an attack on enemy lines near Exermont, France. It is the only known surviving Renault FT-17 Tank used in combat by U.S. personnel. A World War I Liberty Truck, Korean War-vintage Jeep, and Huey helicopter will be added on later dates. The Museum’s construction is being funded privately through a campaign led by the Army Historical Foundation, with nearly 158,000 Founding Sponsors to date. The Foundation is also raising funds through the Army Brick Program, which allows individuals and groups to order personalized bricks that will line the Museum’s outdoor pathways. Time is running out to order a brick at armyhistory.org/bricks that will be in place when the Museum opens in late 2019. The U.S. Army has preserved and restored the artifacts that will be displayed in the Museum, which is being built at Fort Belvoir, just south of Washington, D.C. The Army is the only military service without a national museum dedicated to telling its entire history. For more information, visit armyhistory.org.
