Miracle League Of MA Seeks Volunteers For Fall Season The Miracle League of MA is looking for volunteers for our upcoming fall season which begins September 7th and runs each Saturday through October 19th. All games are played at the Joseph Lalli Miracle Field at NARA Park in Acton, MA. The Miracle League of Massachusetts is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that gives children with disabilities a chance to play baseball as part of a team in an organized league at no cost to their families. Our athletes, aged 5 to 22, have a wide range of challenges from just having a little difficulty paying attention or understanding instructions, to needing physical assistance with the game. Miracle League team members are assigned buddies who assist them in hitting the

ball, running the bases, and fielding. We encourage you to visit our website at www.MiracleLeagueOfMA.com to see pictures and video from previous seasons to see the joy that our athletes get from playing baseball. We are seeking energetic and fun volunteers to be buddies for our team members. Volunteers must be 12 or older. No baseball skills are necessary. Buddies can participate at any number of games – just one game would be great, or all would be fantastic! For more info about volunteering, please email Lauren at volunteer@ MiracleLeagueOfMA.com. Come join the Miracle League community because every child deserves the chance to play baseball! It is not until you become a mother that your judgment slowly turns to compassion and understanding. -Erma Bombeck

You can file a volunteer application directly from the town website at http://www.acton-ma.gov/formcenter/town-managers-office-5/volunteer-application-43. Applications should be received prior to June 7 for consideration at the VCC’s next meeting. There is no better way to give back to your community than volunteering.

Pete Seeger Songfest - Jim Scott Remembers Pete The Pete Seeger 100th Birthday Songfest, featuring Jim Scott, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m., at First Parish Church of Stow and Acton (FPC). theactionpaper.com Veterans Day Open House and commemoration ceremony. This ceremony was well attended and set the stage for the work that started this year. WWI monument moved from town hall Veterans Day Ceremony & Commemoration The preliminary site work has now been completed. This includes rough grading the site, installing a deep drain, and running an underground electrical line to the site from the library. We have set the base for the large flagpole and moved the WWI Memorial boulder from the library that serves as the anchor for our design. The contract that will go up to bid for the granite and stonework has been prepared and is going through final revisions. Given the seasonal nature of the work, and the strict time constraints on the bidding process, the contract for the stonework will be bid in the fall. This will allow the blocks to be quarried and fabricated over

the winter and then installed in the spring of 2020. To reduce project costs, we developed a plan that allows much of the work to be done by volunteers, rather than hiring contractors. Current projections have us well within the funding budget, thanks to the volunteer support and generous donations. We will make update flyers available at the library to keep you informed of what has been completed and our future milestones. We thank you again for your support of this project to honor Boxborough Veterans and their families. Use soft words and hard arguments. -English proverb

Maynard Community Preservation Committee Seeking Proposals The Maynard Community Preservation Committee is asking Maynard residents to submit proposals for Community Preservation Act funding. The deadline for submitting preliminary applications is September 30, 2019. This entails a short project description used to determine eligibility for CPA funds. The detailed final applications are due on November 4, 2019. CPA funds can be used for four kinds of projects: • Community housing projects that promote affordable housing. • Historic preservation projects that protect, preserve or restore historic structures, sites or artifacts. • Open space projects that acquire land for open space, purchase conservation restrictions or restore open space areas. • Recreation projects that acquire, preserve, rehabilitate or convert structures and land to recreational use. To date, Maynard CPA funds have been used to restore Veteran’s Memorial Park, provide sprinkler systems to Alumni Field, preserve historical artifacts, support design and acquisition for the Assabet River Rail Trail, acquire the Maynard Country Club property, replace the Glenwood Cemetery fence, improve the playgrounds at Fowler and Green Meadow Schools, and other projects. Information and application forms are available on the Town of Maynard website at townofmaynard-ma.gov/gov/committees/cpc under the “Resources” section. Copies of the CPC booklets are available at the town clerk’s office, 195 Main St., or on the town website under “CPC.” You may also contact the CPC Administrative Assistant, Anna-Lisa McLaughlin, at cpcadmin@townofmaynard.net with any questions. The Community Preservation Committee consists of nine town residents appointed by various town boards and by selectmen. The committee reviews applications, provides support for the proponents of proposals, and determines which proposals to recommend for funding to the Maynard Town Meeting.

We received this note from a recent client: “I want to thank you for helping me out in the tough time I’m going through. Your kindness means so much.” Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be

a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/ Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Anyone in urgent need can be considered for financial assistance by going to a member of the clergy or social service representative and asking them to contact A Friend in Need on their behalf. We do not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need. We can also be contacted at afriendinneedacton@gmail.com. kicks off a month-long de-cluttering challenge entitled “Your Extra is Somebody’s Only.” A cluttered environment makes it easy to misplace things, often leading to purchases of duplicate items. These “extras” and other unneeded items can be crucial “onlys” for people in need. After the Clutter Queen presents at Household Goods, she will issue four weekly challenges to help you declutter your home and enhance your environment. As part of each weekly challenge, Household Goods will invite you to share your extras to benefit people in need.

OPEN YOUR HOME TO A LOVING COMPANION

Emily Female, 1-year old, calico cat.

Another former mom to 5 beautiful kittens that all found homes. I can finally relax now that my kittens have homes. My foster mom said that I’m a very sweet cat, a great story teller, love to snuggle with you and that I’m very clean. My kittens were not allowed to move unless they were spotless. Get out the toys because I love to play. I wouldn’t mind being the only cat in the house and if you have an apartment that only allows one cat, that would be great!
