However, a high number of manatee fatalities are from human-related causes. Most human-related manatee fatalities occur from collisions with watercraft, and 2016 was a record year for boating-related manatee deaths. Other causes of human-related manatee mortality include being crushed and/or drowned in canal locks and flood control structures; ingestion of fish hooks, litter, and monofilament line; and entanglement in crab trap lines. Loss of habitat is also a serious threat facing manatees today. Save the Manatee Club is a nonprofit conservation organization, established in 1981 by singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett, and former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham. The

Citizen’s Scholarship Foundation For over twenty-five years, the Citizen’s Scholarship Foundation has been managing and awarding scholarships to high school seniors and even adults seeking further education to help defray the high cost of college. Over one thousand scholarships have been awarded to date, totaling roughly six hundred thousand dollars. This year the group is happy to announce that there will be two additional scholarships

this year, thanks to the families of two former Marlborough Firefighters, Donald Cusson and Robert Rennie. Both families have chosen to honor the memory of their loved one by awarding a scholarship in their name. Donald Cusson was the Marlborough Emergency Management Director for thirty years, and a retired firefighter with thirty-four years on the force. He was also a member of Marlborough’s Medical Reserve Corps, and was responsible for creating Marlborough’s hazardous waste collection day. Robert Rennie was a retired Deputy Fire Chief, and served the city’s fire department for thirty-four years. Rennie was also a member of the National Guard Army Reserves and the head of the Worcester Region Hazardous Material Team. Those who wish to donate to a scholarship fund in Cusson’s or Rennie’s memory may do so to the Scholarship Fund at CSF of Marlborough Dollars for Scholars. This year’s award dinner for recipients of scholarships through the Dollars for Scholars program will be held at the Marlborough Senior Center on Thursday, June 22.

Minuteman’s High School setting allows the preschool students to explore many of the school’s career and technical education programs and use facilities such as a large indoor gym. Studentto-teacher ratios far exceed the state standards allowing adults to provide additional guidance and support throughout the day. “At Colonial Children’s Academy, the learning will extend beyond the classroom walls, said Michelle Roche, Director of Career and Technical Education at Minuteman High School. “Preschool students will get to explore all that Minuteman has to offer with the help from our expert teaching staff. Children can take field trip with the environmental department to explore pond life or visit the automotive department to see what an engine looks like. The possibilities are endless! We’re excited to be able to offer project-based learning even for our youngest students.” Colonial Children’s Academy will follow Minuteman High School’s school year calendar. It will be open five days a week,

CATS Is Returning To Theatre With A Twist Come to the Jellicle Ball to see which cat will be reborn. Theatre with a Twist will be performing this wonderful musical based on tales from T.S. Elliot’s book “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” and music from Andrew Lloyd Webber.

saturday, june 3, 2017

This is a wonderful tale about how a group of cats come together at the Jellicle Ball and tell (sing) their stories to Old Deuteronomy so that he can choose which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. Who will he choose? Perhaps Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat? Jenny Anydots (Gumby Cat)? Maybe Grizabella the Glamour Cat? You will just have to come to the show to find

SAAB

I was homeless since I was 4 months old. I wasn’t street savvy and thus, a car hit me. I had injuries to my hip, pelvis, and leg. Someone picked me off the road and dropped me off at Animal Control. If it was for a kind lady who rescued me, I would’ve been PTS. When I was in a lot of pain, I pulled fur out from my back. After 4 months of crate rest, the pain went away and yes, I can walk again. You will have to earn my trust before I let down my guard. As you can see, I had a rough start in life and I’m just looking for someone to give me a chance and show me that a loving purrson can do wonders for a kitty with a broken heart. All cats have been spayed/neutered and are up to date on shots. Please visit our website at www.catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents and crafts.

area. We were contacted by advocates for several of our neighbors who were having financial difficulties due to health or income issues. A Friend in Need was able to provide assistance for utility bills and rent and hope this will allow these individuals to recover financially. Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational

Church and the church generously pays for our telephone answering service. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. AFIN will consider helping anyone who is recommended by clergy or social service professionals associated with a local agency. Local clergy and social service agencies know how to contact A Friend in Need on behalf of an individual in need. We do not discriminate and will try to help anyone with a genuine need. If you would like to make a donation, please send your check to A Friend in Need, c/o South Acton Congregational Church, 35 School St., Acton MA 01720.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Red Cross Calls For New Donors The American Red Cross urges those who have never given blood before – as well as those who haven’t given recently – to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now and help sustain a sufficient community blood supply this summer. While the need for blood is constant during the summer months, the Red Cross experiences a drastic decline in new donors. Nationwide and in

saturday, june 3, 2017

Massachusetts, about one-third fewer new donors came out to give last summer than during the rest of the year. Additionally, many schools where blood drives are held – and where new donors give – are not in session, and current donors often delay giving due to summer vacation plans. While about 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood, less than 10 percent of those eligible actually do. The blood donation process takes about an hour with the actual donation only taking about 10 minutes. Whether new to donating blood or a lifelong donor, the Red Cross offers helpful tips for an enjoyable donation experience: 1. As much as possible, eat iron-rich foods leading up to your donation. 2. Hydrate – drink an extra 16 oz. of liquid before and after the donation. 3. Have a healthy meal before the donation. 4. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow. 5. Complete a RapidPass on the day of donation, prior to

arriving, to save time. 6. Remember to bring a picture ID, blood donor card or two other forms of identification. “Every day, we have thousands of lives to help save, but blood and platelet donations often do not keep pace with hospital demand during the summer months,” said Alyson Barraza, communications program director, Massachusetts Blood Services Region. “In less time than it can take to go out to eat, you can make a lifesaving difference for cancer patients, accident victims and others in need.” Appointments can be scheduled by downloading the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767).
