Opinion Piece On The Mental Health Presentation Success is when one person is helped. More than one person was helped at the presentation on. Mental illness - pathways to hope and healing presented by the Acton Commission on Disabilities and NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) on May 8th at the Acton Memorial Library. Two presenters told their stories, in sections, with time for

questions after each one. These are people who live with Mental Illness, and they told their stories and those of their families and friends who have lived through it all with them. They spoke about when they first experienced problems. It was a bit scary to hear of attempted suicide and hearing voices. There were questions after this presentation, several from one or two people. The next part was how they and others (family, society, and the medical experts) dealt with the situation. There were more questions now, as it seems that people felt more comfortable asking, At the very end, a man, with his wife, asked a question about a family member and two representatives from NAMI went right over to speak to them. These two people spoke from the heart about their personal experiences, so it was very real, and moving, and sometimes hard to hear. The last part was about hope and healing. There is still so much stigma about Mental Illness, lack of information and understanding, and still problems in the medical field, and our quickness to jail those who act differently!

action unlimited We are fortunate to have a police force with a mental health/jail diversion expert, Alia Toran-Burrell, who works with several towns. She is in Acton on Wednesdays and is available other days as needed. Lieutenant Edward Lawton attended this presentation. We have police who are trained to handle many situations, and diffuse them if at all possible. I know of several situations when they have done an excellent and caring job! When someone has a physical illness, we share with our friends, and we all gather round and try to help. When we hear of someone with a mental illness, we back away - we do not understand and do not know what to do. We need to learn! We need more presentations like this one. There are people you know and work with that are suffering form mental illness - but you do not know. It could be depression or psychotic breaks. We all need to learn more - care more - help more. Anyone may contact the com-

mission or NAMI with any questions at any time. Information is on line. For the Action Commission on Disabillties call the town clerk at 978-929-6620. For NAMI 800-950-2624. Thanks to Leslie Johnson, Acton Commission on Disabilities, for planning this presentation. It helped many people!

her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation, and chaos abounds. The musical comedy features an original hit score by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, which includes songs like “Magic”, “All Over The World”, “Suddenly”, “I’m Alive”, “Evil Woman”, “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “Xanadu.” Xanadu JR. features a charmingly witty book by Douglas Carter Beane and great pop music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne and John Farrar. The student version of the show is based on the Tony nominated Broadway musical, which was based on the 1980 Universal Pictures film with a screenplay by Richard Danus and Marc Rubel, starring Gene Kelly and Olivia NewtonJohn. The A.C.T. is a unique, nonprofit cooperative theater for grades K-12. Flower Communion Sunday Service On Sunday, May 28, at 10 a.m., the First Parish Church of Stow and Acton, Unitarian Universalist, will celebrate diversity with its annual Flower Communion Sunday service. Each person brings a cut flower or two to place in a communal basket. The resulting bouquet symbolizes the diversity of those present, including the many blessings, gifts, and talents each brings to the community. At the end of the service, each person takes a different flower home, to remind them to be grateful for all we receive from others in our

community. All are welcome.

The church is located at 353 Great Road in Stow (at the intersection of routes 117 and 62) and is wheelchair accessible. For more information, contact the church office at 978-897-8149 or visit www.fpc-stow-acton.org.
