Fletcher Library Inc. will be holding a book sale on Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, June 10 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the meeting room of the J.V. Fletcher Library at 50 Main Street in Westford. On Sunday all materials will be offered at half price. Please note that scanners may not be used on Friday but are welcome on Saturday and Sunday. The sale will include over 15,000 books plus CDs, LPs/ vinyl, audio books, and DVDs. Regular prices are 50 cents and up for paperbacks and $1 and up for hardcover books. sales are donated by Westford residents. Please donate your unwanted books, audio and video materials to the Friends for the direct benefit of the library and the community of Westford. These materials can be dropped off at the left-hand door just inside the library’s rear entrance. If the library is closed, just drop your donations in the collection box that is located near the back door of the library. Tax deduction forms are available at the library’s main desk. The Friends of the J.V. Fletcher Library appreciate your support.

YOUR CRAFT WINE, BEER & SPIRITS DESTINATION

Rosé season has officially arrived and with so many to choose from, the task of picking one can be daunting. So, in order to help guide you in the right direction, here are a few rosés to get you started this season. Commanderie de Peyrassol Rosé Côtes de Provence 2017

Le Poussin by Sacha Lichine Rosé Vin de France 2017

This is the more serious and traditional rosé, kind of like that grandfather that walked uphill both ways to school and home. Even though this is meant for the wine buff, it is still exceptionally friendly to those still learning to appreciate a good rosé. Here the minerality sneaks up sooner by being an integral part of the palate. Citrus notes, bay leaf, and crushed sandstone make up the wine which is only enhanced by the tingling acidity that makes your mouth water for more.

From the dominant wine team made up of Sacha Lichine and Patrick Léon comes our best selling rosé, Le Poussin. This light-bodied yet enticingly fruity rosé has become a mainstay for us not only because this wine offers everything one could want from a rosé, it does so in a cute package and for a bargain. Raspberries, mint, and peach blossom are found on the palate. The minerality and bright acidity bring up the finish making this the porch pounder we have all been looking for.

Sale: $1598

Domaine Lafage ‘Miraflors’ Rosé Côtes Catalanes 2017 Domaine Lafage might be one of the most intriguing producers from southern France. Located in the Roussillon, Domaine Lafage and its wines are only rivaled by those across the border in Spain. Clean, fresh, palate engulfing, and flavorful are just a few adjectives to best describe the wines Domaine Lafage produce, and the Miraflors Rosé doesn’t lack any of them. While having the upfront fruit Domaine Lafage is known for, it still gives a nod to the Provencal style of rosé by keeping the wine lean with a nice backsplash of acidity.

Sale: $998 per bottle or $100 per a case of twelve bottles.

Domaine de Pellehaut Rosé Côtes de Gascogne 2017 Unlike Le Poussin, this rosé gets overlooked because Provence isn’t mentioned anywhere on the label. Because this wine falls victim of being judged by its label, rosé admirers miss out on its bright and citrusy notes that are accompanied by suggestions of fresh cranberries and floral undertones. The acidity pops from the glass, a commonplace component of wines from Gascogne.

Sale: $698

Sale: $1398

Day Owl Barbera Rosé California 2017 The Day Owl Rose is made from 100% Barbera. This makes it a unique offering because Barbera lends itself quite nicely to the production of rosé. With a good balance of floral notes, heavier set berry fruit, and bright herbs like mint this rosé is nothing short of exciting. Unlike the lighter rosés we have all become accustomed to, the Day Owl Rosé is one that pairs exceptionally well with grilled meats. With just the right amount of body and a touch of acidity, this wine was made to be enjoyed with a marbled ribeye.

Sale: $1098

Mapreco Rosé Vinho Verde 2017 One of the most talked about wine regions in the wine geekdom is, Portugal. The wines walk the line between Old World and New World. The Mapreco Rosé from Vinho Verde is just that. Like so many Portuguese wines the Mapreco Rosé is produced from Espadeiro, an unpronounceable indigenous varietal known for its intense flavors. Blackcurrant and basil lead to a fresh wine that finishes crisp.

Yoga For Building Bones At Emerson Hospital Did you know that micro cracks in the spine can cause it to slowly collapse? And that rounding the spine in a forward fold can cause vertebral fractures? Correct alignment is very important in building bones, and yoga is a great way to learn and practice this. A new, groundbreaking ten year study on over 500 people showed statistically significant improvement in bone density in the spine and femur from a regular yoga practice. The new Steinberg Wellness Center at Emerson Hospital is now offering a yoga class that will teach you these specially chosen postures, as well as other important yoga exercises and techniques. You don’t need to have osteoporosis or osteopenia to

start a program of strengthening your bones. Prevention is just as important, since women start losing bone mass beginning at around age 30. And the DEXA bone scans are not nearly as accurate as the machine manufacturers would have you believe. Experts agree that you need to have the scan taken in the exact same spot, by the same technician, in order to effectively compare scans. This is why it’s so important to act preventively to ensure your bones stay thick and strong. Doctors agree that although exercising to build bones once you are diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, it is also key to begin building bones before they weaken in order to counter osteoporosis. The beauty of practicing yoga while strengthening your bones is that you reap all of the other benefits yoga offers: better posture, improved balance,

greater range of motion, reduced anxiety, and even the peace and, yes, bliss of finding yourself in a more relaxed state of mind throughout your day. In “Yoga for Building Bones”, you will learn specific poses that were chosen for safety and that strengthen parts of the body most vulnerable to fracture. The muscular tension of the poses effectively builds bone, according to authors of the study. Students will learn a 12-minute practice using these safe postures, with good alignment, that you can do at home. Designed for all fitness levels, students will learn Bridge, Sphinx, and Chair pose, along with many standing postures such as Triangle and Downward Facing Dog – all of them with easy, modified versions. The instructor is certain to offer several variations for each posture so that you find the one that is best suited for your strength and flexibility. Forty-four million Americans are known to have low bone mass. One in two women and one in four men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in his or her lifetime. And twenty-five percent of hip fractures end in death. So don’t be one of those people vulnerable for a fracture and learn how to strengthen your bones the yoga way. Anything and ever ything to Begin Planning Kids’ Summer Recreation Now Many families spend winter figuring out how to chase away cabin fever and endure frigid temperatures until spring and summer mercifully return. Parents thinking ahead to swimming pools and days lounging on the beach can put their daydreams to practical use by planning ahead for their youngsters’ summer vacations. Youth recreational programs and summer camps can bridge the gap in care between the end of school and the day when classes resume. Due in part to high demand, parents who want to place their kids in summer rec programs or summer camps should being vetting such programs and camps well in advance of summer. The following are a handful of tips for moms and dads who want their kids to have fun and fulfilling summers. • Ask for recommendations. Speak with fellow parents and trusted friends about where they send their children. Personal

recommendations can be very helpful, providing firsthand insight into a particular camp or program. Schedule appointments to visit camps that fall within your budget. Take your son or daughter along so he or she can get a sense of what camp will be like. • Explore all options. Camps come in more flavors than ever before. Certain camps may be faith-based ministries while others may focus on particular sports. Band camps and art camps may appeal to creative kids. Also, there are plenty of general-interest camps that offer various activities without narrowing in on any particular one. Parents may need to choose between a sleepaway camp or day camps, depending on which camp experience they want for their children. • Inquire about camp schedules. While many camps are flexible, day camps do not have the same level of flexibility as afterschool programs. Arrangements will need to be made if care is required after regular camp hours. Speak with camp staff to see which types of after-hours programs, if any, are available. • Determine your camp budget. As varied as program offerings may be, camps also can vary greatly with regard to cost. Government-run camps may be less expensive than those offered by private companies. Day camps typically cost less than those that provide room and board. Find out if a particular organization

kick off The Summer Season! subsidizes a portion of camp costs. Scouting programs often have a dedicated camp and may offer affordable options for scouts. Martial arts schools and dance centers frequently offer camp schedules. If camp seems out of reach, look into local summer recreation programs at parks or schools. Such programs may not be as extensive as those offered by camps, but they can quell kids’ boredom and keep children occupied during the day. In addition to camp, remember to plan for some free days so children can just enjoy some downtime. Such days can break up the monotony of a routine and provide kids and families time to relax together. Summer recreation may be far off, but it is never too early to start making summer plans, including finding camps and other activities for kids. TF162873

action unlimited new hazards. The reason for the changes is the broken process. Job boards don’t work well for either employers or job seekers today. As a result, many recruiters now intensively search Google and LinkedIn to find candidates who are qualified for their jobs. Recruiters also search online to do a quick, inexpensive “background check” of applicants. That focus by employers on searching means that job seekers must focus on being easily-- and appropriately -- found. This is a new requirement! A job seeker without positive online visibility related to their profession has a serious handicap today. Invisibility online is not “privacy” now. It is an out-ofdate stamp. If a job seeker isn’t easily found, they are invisible (and ignored). Ideally, being easily found means an end to the old findand-apply job application process. Join this workshop to learn how to adapt to the new process. Learn “personal SEO” and “LinkedIn SEO” -- essential skills for successful job search today. Susan P. Joyce is an acknowl-

edged expert in the field of online job search. She has been studying, writing, teaching, and speaking about the subject since 1995. Thanks to a very generous grant from The Harvard Schools Trust, the exhibit will be free and on display at the Bromfield School (May 23rd – June 6th) and at the Harvard Public Library (June 8th – 15th). The opening night reception at Bromfield will take place on Wednesday, May 23rd and will feature guest speaker Chantal Kayitesi, a Rwandan genocide survivor, who has co-founded survivor and advocacy organizations in both Rwanda and here in the United States. Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

The photo-text exhibit, open from 6:00 to 9:00 pm that night, will be on display in the Courtyard Gallery, located in the firstfloor lobby below the Bromfield School Library, for attendees to view before and/or after Ms. Kayitesi’s talk. Two teachers at the Bromfield School have been instrumental in bringing the exhibit and the speaker to town. Kathleen Doherty, the Social Studies Department Leader, and Bryce Mattie-Brown, the Global Studies teacher and Global Competency Certificate (GCC) program coordinator, both feel that it is crucial to provide opportunities for students – and for staff and community members to learn about others, but also to see themselves represented, in as many different ways as possible. Harvard is home to many immigrants and this exhibit is a way to both educate and celebrate. The BUILDING BRIDGES exhibit is Family Diversity Project’s newest exhibit and has only been available to the public since the start of this school year. Doherty and Mattie-Brown are thrilled that Harvard is one

of the first towns to be hosting this exhibit, which features many immigrants and refugees who make their home here in Massachusetts. Bill Newman, an attorney for ACLU of Massachusetts who saw the exhibit when it first opened, commented that “BUILDING BRIDGES is crucial in this time of political divisiveness. The exhibit, which seamlessly combines exquisite photos with moving text, breaks down stereotypes about immigrants and refugees in a unique and powerful way. It makes an indelible impression on the heart and soul of everyone who sees it.” Created by Family Diversity Projects, Inc. a non-profit organization based in Amherst, Massachusetts, BUILDING BRIDGES consists of photographs by Mark Chester and Gigi Kaeser and text from interviews conducted by Peggy Gillespie. The theme “is a call to pay attention to both your physical health and your mental health, which can help achieve overall wellness…” Good mental health is essential to overall health and personal well-being. It also contributes to the ability to lead a healthy, balance and productive life. Loaves & Fishes Fundraiser Golf Tournament Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry will hold its 5th Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, June 11 at Shaker Hills Country Club. This year’s tournament is cosponsored by Wilson Brothers Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. of Pepperell, Catania Oils of Ayer and Maugel Architects of Harvard. For more than 30 years, Loaves & Fishes has been able to continue its mission of feeding our hungry neighbors thanks to the generous support of local businesses and families. Today, we provide food to more than 850 families who visit the Food Pantry each year. Partnering with Loaves & Fishes is a win-win proposition—it is an investment in the community, and it feels great to know that you are making a difference to so many families in need. Last year, our tournament raised more than $10,600. Our goal is to top that amount this year, and we could use your help to make this year’s golf tournament a success. If you enjoy golfing, we encourage you to enter a foursome and enjoy the day with us. If you don’t have a foursome, no problem. We’ll pair you with other players. And thanks to the generosity of Gervais Ford, sponsor of our Hole-in-One Challenge, all golfers will have chance to win a free 2-year lease of a 2018 Ford. You can become a tee and green sponsor starting at just $100. Or you can be a tee sponsor and have your company’s name listed on a golf towel which will be given to all golfers for just $150. In all, there are 9 levels of sponsorship from which you can choose. (Note: The deadline for all sponsorships is May 30.) You can also help by donating an item for the Live Auction,
