May, July Peak Months For Grilling Fires Grilling season is right around the corner and grill gurus everywhere are preparing for many family parties and barbecues. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages grillers to pay attention to safety during the spring and summer months when home fires involving grilling incidents occur most often. In 2011 – 2015, fire departments responded to an average of 9,600 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues each year. That number included 4,100

structure fires and 5,500 outside or unclassified fires, according to NFPA. These fires caused an average of 10 civilian deaths, 160 civilian injuries, and $133 million in direct property damage per year. July is the peak month for grilling fires followed by May, June and August. According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, 73 percent of consumers grill on the Fourth of July, 60 percent do so on Memorial Day, 58 percent grill on Labor Day, and 45 percent grill on Father’s Day. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Surveillance
System, grills caused an average 4,500 non-thermal contact burns in patients seen at emergency departments in 2012 – 2016. Children under five suffered 1,600 or 35 percent of these burns. MCC Awarded Grant To Help At-risk Immigrant/Refugee Youth Middlesex Community College has been awarded a oneyear, $10,000 grant from the John H. & H. Naomi Tomfohrde Foundation to help immigrant/refugee youth improve their English skills and academics through the college’s English Language Institute (ELI) and Out of School Youth Development Center (OSYDC). “This grant allows Middlesex to serve one of our most vulnerable populations: refugee and immigrant youth who are at-risk of not completing high school,” said MCC President James Mabry. “With assistance from the Tomfohrde Foundation, we will be able to help these young people improve their English, complete high school, and move
on to college or join the workforce.” The grant-funded project will recruit 60 Lowell-area students – ages 16 to 24 – to enroll in MCC’s ELI and OSYDC, explained Maria Cunha, OSYDC Program Director. Predominantly refugees from Syria, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the targeted youth are either failing or not completing high school due to lack of English or other academic skills. These students will receive a combination of special support services, including one-on-one assessment, tutoring, testing, and enrollment in academic and language remediation courses, continued Cunha. The goal is to prepare them to sit for the high school equivalency (GED) exam or placement exams for college enrollment. “Most of these young people are referred to OSYDC through Lowell High School or the

Drain catfish strips, reserving the marinade; stir fry until fish just cooks through, about 4 minutes; remove to the bowl with the vegetables. In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch and reserved marinade with 3/4 cup water; stir until smooth. Add to the skillet; cook and stir until thickened, about 1 minute; return the vegetables and fish to the skillet and cook 1 minute longer. Season with black pepper. The Town of Concord is seeking an energetic, team-oriented, selfstarter to join the Facilities Management Team. Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Maintainer will be tasked with duties and responsibilities relative to the maintenance, capital improvements and upkeep of Town buildings (not schools). Applicants should possess a moderate level of skill in carpentry, maintenance and building operations management principles with a strong desire to learn on-the-job. Valid Driver’s License required. Hiring range: $20.30 - $24.75/hour, DOQ. This is a full-time position with an excellent benefits package.
