sioned by CWC to compose this three-movement piece for women’s voices, oboe, cello and piano. The text is drawn from three pastoral poems by Kathleen Jamie, Professor of Poetry at the University of Stirling and one of Scotland’s most lauded contemporary poets. Scott Nicholas (piano), Jennifer Slowik (oboe) and Johann Soults (cello), leading Boston-based instrumentalists, will perform with the chorus. The program also draws from the poetry of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in stirring compositions by Dan Forrest (“Alway Something Sings), John Purifoy (“Address to the Moon) and Tara Traxler (“Birds of Passage). Other pieces include Stephen Hatfield’s testament to the strength of women in “Chant for a Long Day, the traditional Scottish ballad “Waly, Waly (“The Water is Wide) and the “Skye Boat Song, arranged by Greg Gilpin. To expand the reach of this exciting program and of “The Tree House, CWC will travel to Scotland and England in June 2017 to perform in venues including Carlisle Cathedral,
St. Giles’ Cathedral and Stirling Castle. The concert will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street, Concord, Massachusetts. The church is handicap accessible and a reception follows the concert. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students, $5 for children 12 and under, and can be purchased at concordwomenschorus.org. Songs & Stories for Everyone Davis Bates: Songs & Stories for Everyone will be the topic of the United Woman’s Club Of Concord (UWCC) meeting on Thursday, May 18th, at noon, at the West Concord Union Church, 1317 Main St, Concord, MA 01742. Davis has been telling stories for over thirty-eight years (longer according to his mom), in schools, libraries, and community settings around New England and across the country. Folk traditions legend Pete Seeger was an inspiration for his work an, in turn, called Davis “thoughtful, creative, human, and a fantastic storyteller.” Davis’ traditional and participatory style of telling is a empowers and encourages audiences of all ages to take the stories home with them to share with others, whether he is relating an age old international folktale, or a story about his grandparents. He also encourages listeners to remember and tell stories from their own family and cultural tradition, and to explore the cultural traditions of their surrounding community. A former Director of the Pioneer Valley Folklore Society and the Leyden Oral History project, Davis was a founding member of the Western New England Storytellers Guild, as well as the co-coordinator of Story Grove performance stage at Clearwater’s Great Hudson River Revival for over 10 years.
His storytelling recording, Family Stories, won a prestigious Parents Choice Magazine Gold Award, and was named one of the best audio recordings of by the American Library Association’s Booklist magazine. Davis lives in the village of Shelburne Falls, MA, and when he isn’t collecting or learning stories he spends his time gardening and working on various pollinator preservation and permaculture projects. Please contact Lisa Fay at 617-327-8159 or lisamankitafay@yahoo.com for additional information about the performance and the club.

is the recently retired Boston Red Sox designated hitter. A proud Dominican-American, Ortiz has an undisputed talent for hitting larger-than-life home runs for the Sox. As a young boy, he had a special liking for the game, as his father played baseball for years in Dominican pro and semi-pro leagues. Due to his large physique, Ortiz was pushed into basketball in high school. But his love of baseball earned him a contract with the Seattle Mariners, who then traded him to the Minnesota Twins. He played for the Twins from 1997 to 2002, and the Red Sox from 2003 to 2016. Ortiz is a 10-time All Star and three-time
World Series Champion. He currently holds the Boston Red Sox single-season record for home runs with 54, and is an all-time leader in Major League Baseball history for home runs, RBIs and hits by a designated hitter. Ortiz will be interviewed by Dan Roche, an award-winning sports anchor and reporter for WBZ-TV News and myTV38 (WSBK-TV). A leader in Boston sports coverage for two decades, Roche won a New England Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Series for “Red Sox This Week.” Tickets to An Evening with David Ortiz range from $34 to $100. American.” Ed will show “how one reconstructs the war years using memoirs, old photos and actually walking the ground: the basis of our documentaries, nonfiction books, and, of course, the novel.” Ed is an emeritus professor of biology at University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Libby had served as Ed’s research assistant when he was teaching biology and has carried out much of the archival research for their writings on the WWI. The couple lives in Leverett, MA, but has spent considerable time each year in areas of Belgium and France furthering their understanding of the Great War. The third speaker, George C. Kingston, will detail the work of Fred T. Ley and his company in the construction of Camp Devens -- so many buildings constructed in a very short time. His talk is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. Kingston says, “I will focus my talk on the events around May 20, 1917, with an emphasis on how Fred T. Ley was central to the success of Camp Devens and how Camp Devens contributed to the success of Fred T. Ley,”

By Avner Halperin (NAPSI)—Even though most people do it every night, science still has had a hard time understanding sleep. Greek philosophers argued about it; scientists studied it for millennia and just about everyone recognizes it’s important. For thousands of years, people believed sleep was a passive state during which active physical and mental processes are “on hold.” But sleep is much more. Sleep is a complex process; it’s a time for internal restoration and recuperation, when the body heals and the brain rejuvenates. Sleep serves as a window to overall health—if monitored correctly. Today, to gain an accurate picture of sleep and health, you don’t have to be hooked up to heavy machinery. Medically proven, contact-free sensor technologies are available for at-home use to provide useful health information. There are four benefits to tracking health during sleep:
action unlimited 1) Sleeping bodies are perfectly at rest, which provides an accurate baseline of our vital signs. Monitoring your heart and breathing patterns each night, you can quickly detect any fluctuations and gain advanced warning of health disorders such as heart complications, fever or breathing disorders. Access to this information means you can get doctors to intervene quickly to address any problems. Conversely, people working to improve their health can be motivated by seeing results of their efforts in improved vital sign statistics. 2) Using contact-free sensor technologies that require no setup and don’t need to be worn means users don’t have to change anything about their lifestyle to access critical health information collected during sleep. 3) At-home health sensors that have been proven accurate on hundreds of thousands of patients in hospitals can be particularly useful monitoring the health of older people at home as well. This can provide peace of mind to their loved ones who can monitor their health stats via a remote viewing app.
4) Access to accurate data on sleep and health means you have the information you need to make adjustments and improve your sleep. Quality sleep has been linked to stronger immune systems, improved academic success, better cognitive performance function and job performance, and general happiness. So it pays to get a good night’s rest. While scientists continue to try to understand why people need to sleep, you can take advantage of the lifesaving and life-improving advances that sleep monitoring technology provides. Sudoku
Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Answers:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Veteran Mental Health (NAPSI)—While the appreciation and respect for our military is a year-round sentiment, this month marks a time to reflect and not only thank military service members and veterans for their service, but to make sure we are supporting them physically and emotionally as they transi-

tion from active duty. Every day, 20 veterans commit suicide, according to a recent study from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Yet, veterans are at much higher risk; in 2014, veterans accounted for 18 percent of all deaths by suicide in the U.S. Extra attention should be devoted to promoting resources around and awareness of the issues of suicide prevention, and connecting individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. Warning Signs The risk for suicide is 21 percent higher among veterans when compared to U.S. civilian adults, according to the VA’s study—the need for more mental health resources is evident. Some of the factors affecting veterans are presence of serious health conditions; ongoing stress or single major stressors such as job loss; exposure to someone else’s suicide; or a family history of suicide. While it takes a trained professional to evaluate someone for suicidality, the public can be aware of the above risk factors and can help to identify warning signs that indicate someone they

know might be suicidal. Like risk factors, it is often the combination of suicide warning signs that are more important than one single sign. A Positive Approach The call to address veteran suicides is a national issue that reached the White House last year when President Obama signed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention Bill. It made information on suicide prevention more easily accessible to veterans. It instituted a peer support and community outreach pilot program to assist transitioning service members, opened up incentives to encourage more people to work at the VA and established an annual evaluation of VA mental health and suicideprevention ?programs. While this is certainly a positive step toward improving mental health services for veterans, the solution will not come from one law, organization or individual. It takes a comprehensive commitment of support from the community as a whole. As one of the largest providers of education to veterans, University of Phoenix recognizes that as it prepares veterans for the next step in their life, the adjustment back to civilian life is not just about getting a quality
education. University of Phoenix wants to be able to help our veterans in their transition to civilian life. Not only has University of Phoenix always been proud to serve our service members and prepare them for future success, but it also works hard to earn the trust of our men and women in the military, and their families. University of Phoenix is proud that so many trust it to continue their personal and professional journeys upon returning to civilian life. It believes our soldiers deserve strong help in getting a head start, and is always working to make sure it provides them just that.
