The retired Boston Red Sox designated hitter will be interviewed by WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 8, in the Lowell Memorial Auditorium. Proceeds from Celebrity Forum support scholarships for Middlesex students. Since 2004, $269,000 in Celebrity Forum Scholarships has been awarded to 104 MCC students. In addition to Celebrity Forum Scholarships, the MCC Foundation annually awards more than $100,000 in student scholarships.

action unlimited David Americo Ortiz Arias, popularly known as “Big Papi,” is the recently retired Boston Red Sox designated hitter. A proud Dominican-American, Ortiz has an undisputed talent for hitting larger-than-life home runs for the Sox. As a young boy, he had a special liking for the game, as his father played baseball for years in Dominican pro and semi-pro leagues. Due to his large physique, Ortiz was pushed into basketball in high school. But his love of baseball earned him a contract with the Seattle Mariners, who then traded him to the Minnesota Twins. Ft. Devens Museum Observes Armed Forces Day Three guest speakers will talk about restoring something of the past on Saturday, May 20th, as Fort Devens Museum holds its annual Armed Forces Day celebration open house from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Jack Wilson will take his listeners through a process of finding and identifying the remains of U.S. soldiers declared missing in action in Europe during World War II. In his presentation “Remembrance and Search,” to start at 2 p.m., he will relate how he himself became involved in helping advise other families about the process. And he will explain about his journeys across the country, and overseas, where he meets with those who lost loved ones during this war; and with those who live amongst the scarred battlegrounds. An Army veteran, Wilson was born and raised in New England, living for a time in Maine and Connecticut as well as Massachusetts. A graduate of Boston College and Boston University, he has worked in the global automotive and electronics industries. After living for some time in Midwest, he now resides in Harvard, MA. The two other speakers have recreated pieces of World War I history in words and photographs. Speaking at 11 a.m., Ed Klekowski will take the listener “Back to 1914,” to the time from August 1914 to April 1917, a period when Americans

Ed and his wife Libby have written nonfiction books including “Americans in Occupied Belgium: 1914-1918,” television documentaries like those on the American 26th “Yankee” Division and on American ambulance drivers in France, and now a novel, “The Kaiser’s American.” Ed will show “how one reconstructs the war years using memoirs, old photos and actually walking the ground: the basis of our documentaries, nonfiction books, and, of course, the novel.” Ed is an emeritus professor of biology at University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Libby had served as Ed’s research assistant when he was teaching biology and has carried out much of the archival research for their writings on the WWI. The couple lives in Leverett, MA, but has spent considerable time each year in areas of Belgium and France furthering their understanding of the Great War. The third speaker, George C. Kingston, will detail the work of Fred T. Ley and his company in the construction of Camp Devens -- so many buildings constructed in a very short time. His talk is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. Kingston says, “I will focus my talk on the events around May 20, 1917, with an emphasis on how Fred T. Ley was central to the success of Camp Devens and how Camp Devens contributed to the success of Fred T. Ley,” whose company went on to construct the Chrysler Building in New York City. Kingston has just published his second book, “William Van Alen, Fred T. Ley and the Chrysler Building.” William Van Alen was that building’s architect. Kingston is a retired engineering manager and author of historical biographies. He holds a Ph.D. in engineering. A resident of western Massachusetts,

he describes himself as “an avid birder and a curious historian.” Fort Devens Museum invites area residents to view the many exhibits and stop to hear what the three speakers have to say. Admission to the Museum and to the presentations are free of charge, but donations are very much encouraged. Raffle tickets will be available during the day and light refreshments will be provided. Who Is Most At Risk For Foodborne Illness? (NAPSI)-”Double trouble” can be losing the keys to both your car and your house at the same time. People who are “at risk” can be in double trouble if they get sick by eating food that contains disease-causing bacteria. That’s because their immune systems are already fighting another illness such as diabetes, cancer or HIV/AIDS. Why Are They At Risk? Diabetics: Diabetes can affect various organs in the body, causing them not to function properly and making the diabetic person more susceptible to infection. The immune system may delay recognizing harmful bacteria or other pathogens (disease-causing organisms). People with Cancer: A side effect of chemotherapy, radiation and other medications prescribed to help fight cancer is that they may weaken the immune system, as will any progression of the disease itself. HIV/AIDS: The HIV virus that causes AIDS weakens the immune system, making the person more vulnerable to developing a foodborne illness. Older Adults: As people age, their bodies don’t work as well

as when they were younger. The stomach, intestinal tract, liver and kidneys may not efficiently rid the body of toxins, and some medicines can weaken immunity. Transplant Recipients: Medications to keep the body from rejecting the transplanted organ or bone marrow can also suppress the immune system. Thus, the transplant recipient is more susceptible to developing infections that can be caused by foodborne illness. The Keys to Avoiding Foodborne Illnesses To avoid contracting a foodborne illness, people at risk should be especially vigilant when handling food. USDA’s “Be Food Safe” campaign advises to follow these four easy steps to help those at risk be food safe: Clean. Frequent cleaning can keep bacteria from getting on hands, cutting boards, knives and countertops. Separate. Keep raw meat, poultry and seafood and their juices away from ready-to-eat food to avoid cross-contamination. Cook. Use a food thermometer to make sure food reaches a safe minimum internal temperature. You can’t tell food is cooked safely by how it looks. Chill. Bacteria spread fastest at temperatures between 40º F and 140º F. Don’t leave food out more than 2 hours, and refrigerate or freeze food to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
