First Parish Music Sunday Celebrates Thoreau And The Art Of Nature Mark your calendar for Sunday, April 22. On that day, writer/philosopher/naturalist Henry David Thoreau comes to life through a special musical performance presented by First Parish of Sudbury. Acquaintance With Nature, a nine-part piece for chorus, piano, clarinet and narrator (who plays the role of the young Thoreau), was written by Vermont composer Gwyneth Walker and will feature the First Parish Choir. The concert is free and takes place as part of First Parish’s springtime Music Sunday, which beings are 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 22 and is open to all. The First Parish choir, Noriko Yasuda (piano), Dustin Chung (clarinet) and guest singers will be conducted by Debra MorrisBennett, First Parish Music Director. Ryland Bennett of Somerville, will serve as narrator, playing the part of young Thoreau. The service will also include two instrumental works by Walker, the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (“Genesis�) and Semplice for solo piano. Composer, Dr. Gwyneth

Walker is a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music. A former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory, Walker resigned from academic employment in 1982 in order to pursue a career as a full-time composer. She now lives on a dairy farm in Braintree, Vermont. Her catalogue includes over 120 commissioned works for orchestra, band chorus and chamber ensembles. Sunday services at First Parish begin at 10 a.m. and are open to all. The First Parish of Sudbury Meeting House, handicap accessible, is located at 327 Concord Road, across from Town Hall. National Alliance On Mental Illness Support Groups Reconnect, rebuild and find understanding and hope with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) confidential support groups.
