Fudaism: The Wisdom Of The Nosh The cliché of the food-fixated Jewish bubbe in her kitchen is well-known to Jews and nonJews alike. But Jews’ obsession with food goes back (at least) to Jacob and Esau’s fight over a bowl of stew. We will look at how Jews have celebrated, blessed, and fought over food throughout our text, lands, and history. This class, taught by Rabbi Michael Rothbaum, will meet five Wednesdays from 7:00 – 8:30 pm: April 18 and 25, and May 2, 9 and 16; at Congregation Beth Elohim, 133 Prospect St., Acton. The class is open to the

public; tuition for non-members is $30. Please register by April 17 by contacting Ezra Habif in the synagogue office at 978-2633061 or ehabif@bethelohim.org. Congregation Beth Elohim is committed to creating an open and welcoming environment for Jews of all ages and varying degrees of religious observance. To learn more, visit bethelohim. org.

The Market still has openings for an artisan on July 7 and 29 and August 4. Anyone who would like to be considered to sell on one of those dates is encouraged to email MaynardFarmersMarket at gmail.com. Please include photos or links showing your work, the town you’re from, and some background information about your art. The Market also features weekly musical entertainment, children’s events, and community information. Opening for its 23rd season on June 30, the 2018 Market will run Saturdays, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., rain or shine, in the Mill Pond parking lot on Main Street (near intersection with Sudbury Street) in Maynard. Patriots Day Spirit! At The Faulkner Homestead On Sunday, April 15. 1:00 4:00 and 5:30 p.m., travel back in time with the Iron Work Farm to learn why Patriots Day marks the start of both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Re-enactors from two different centuries will take part. In the door yard of the Faulkner Homestead, Patriots Day Spirit portrays the gathering of colonial families awaiting news of their

militiamen in April, 1775, as visitors experience 18th-century home life with outdoor cooking, children’s games, crafts, and small farm animals. Indoors, members of the Nashoba Valley Weavers’ Guild will demonstrate spinning and weaving. Advancing to the 1860s, to mark the start of the Civil War the Mass. 28th Infantry “Irish Brigade,” the12th Georgia Volunteer Infantry, and the 35th Virginia Cavalry will stage a skirmish or two in the Faulkner Woods.

After a brief intermission, the Acton Minutemen will arrive at about 5:30 p.m. for their annual “Robbins Ride,” with the horse and alarm rider bringing news of approaching war to Col. Francis Faulkner. Patriots Day Spirit is open to the public for a modest donation—“Give What You Will.” Visit www.IronWorkFarm for more details. Parking is available nearby.

Give Blood With The Red Cross During National Volunteer Month The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood during National Volunteer Month this April. Donating blood is a simple way for those who are short on time to make a life-changing difference. Kay Whaley knows the impact of blood donations. When she was 9, she was in an accident and received many transfusions. That experience inspired her to become a blood donor. “It takes

saturday, april 14, 2018

about an hour of your time and could save the life of a friend, neighbor or even family member,” she said. “It doesn’t cost you anything and is the greatest gift you could give.” Volunteer donors are the only source of blood products for those in need of transfusions. Donors of all blood types are needed to help meet patient needs this spring. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood. org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All those who come to donate from April 9 to May 13, 2018, will

So, when you write someone a letter, you’re literally sending happiness into the world. To encourage people to celebrate the month and send letters to friends, the Museum is providing free colorful commemorative stamps from the 1960’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s for people to use on

The U.S. Postal Service officially designated April as National Card and Letter Writing Month in 2001 “to raise awareness of the importance and historical significance of card and letter writing.” The Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College in Weston supports the idea because writing and sending cards and letters makes people feel good. And because snail mail deserves a lot more love, especially when commemorative stamps on the envelopes draw attention. Everything about a card or letter screams “somebody cares”: the name and address in familiar handwriting, the knowledge

Acton Commission On Disability March Meeting Emergency Preparedness was the major topic of discussion at the meeting. Sheryl Ball, director of the Acton Board of Health attended the meeting and brought us up to date on what was done in the last storm, and the town’s preparations that are in place. Acton has several facilities available and a good plan in place. Anyone wishing the information should contact Sheryl Ball at: 978-929-6632 or sball@actonma.gov The main concern is identifying the people who may need

help and what specific help is needed. There is a wide range of needs and the town wants to be prepared to meet all of them. There may be people living alone who need help, people with babies and young children, people with pets, seniors, disabled…and their needs have to be known ahead, so they may be properly met. We have the buildings, supplies, nurses, volunteers, and the desire to be there for everyone who needs them. We can always use more volunteers, with and without any skilled care. Sometimes it is just good to have someone talk to you calmly on the phone or greet you cheerfully at a shelter, or

play with children, or pat a cat. The Commission will be working with the Board of Health to meet all the needs in Acton. Warrant articles were reviewed; a question was chosen for the town manager search; and the April agenda was set. Please know that we need help from people in the community to do our job well. We meet the third Tuesday at Town Hall in room 126 from 9:30-12:30

Usually we have a one-time limit for help given to any family, but due to the economy we are trying to be a bit more flexible about that. Our mission is to provide immediate help until the family can receive more substantial aid from other agencies. Much of our money comes through pleas published in our local newspapers and from generous community residents. Acton/ Boxborough United Way and the Maynard Community Chest support us through grant money. Besides SACC, several other churches support us through their Mission Funds. Depending on the resources we have on hand, we can usually provide between $300 and $800 to the needy family. Our mailbox is located at the South Acton Congregational Church and the church generously pays for our telephone answering service. Our volunteers pay for postage and all other costs, so we are able to give away 100% of the money we receive. Valentine Male, black and white cat, 2 years old. Let’s get ready to Rock ‘N Roll. I’m a spunky cat that likes to play hard. Please, no small kids around me. If I get overstimulated I might nip ya a bit. I try to give out signals to let you know I’ve had enough so please pay attention. My hormones are a little out of sync right now after being neutered, but each week I’m getting better and better. I’ll let you hold me for a bit too. I need to be KING in my new home so no other cats please. Just get out some wand toys and give me a good workout every day to use up some of this energy and then we can listen to our favorite tunes. Did you say Metallica? All cats are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. Visit www.catsontheweb.org to fill out an online adoption form.

Audubon in June of 2006, Dr. Harris held a research faculty appointment at Tufts Center for Conservation Medicine, directing the Seabird Ecological Assessment Network (SEANET), which she founded in 2002. SEANET is a longterm collaborative effort using seabirds as indicators of marine and coastal ecosystem health, monitoring mortality and assessing threats to seabirds and their habitats in the northeastern U.S. and Atlantic Canada. “I was lucky enough to find my dream job, but it reinforced for me how challenging on-theground conservation work is, and how critical the Endangered Species Act is a conservation success story, but only if we keep working tirelessly. Concurrent with the presentation, there will be a bird photography exhibit; table exhibits on bird houses, photographing birds, and resources on getting started in birding; as well as recommended guide books and phone apps. A brief welcome to all members will precede the presentation and Q&A with our speaker will follow the program. Light refreshments provided.

This program is open to all ages. Please join us on Tuesday, May 1 at 7 pm, and bring a friend! Maynard Cultural Council’s Grant Awards Show The public is invited to celebrate the successes of the Maynard Cultural Council Monday April 30, 6-9:00 p.m. at Celia T’s, 40 Summer Street Maynard, MA. This year’s Assabet Village Cultural District award winners will be honored, the finalist submissions for the “Maynard as a Canvas” mural project will be on view for a Public Choice voting from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., and Rick Maida’s Workingman’s Band will play a concert. In 2017, the Maynard Cultural Council reviewed a record fiftyfour grant applications. Thirteen exceptional projects have been granted funds. The Maynard Cultural Council’s Grant Awards Show is an opportunity to meet the grant recipients and hear about their ambitious projects for the year ahead. A sampling of

grant winners includes a diversity of cultural values. Activist-artist Catriona Baker will be working with high school students to create handmade books on the subject of violence against women. The grant to the Friends of the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge (FARNWR) will support the ongoing operation of Fort Assabet, an outdoor learning environment that empowers children to create their own nature play area/Fort. Dancer/performer Pamela Newton will gather local anecdotes and tales. The interviews will be transformed into dance, dramatic monologues, and songs for performances throughout the year. Rick Maida

and the Workingman’s Band will feature their first public concert as part of the Awards Grant Show. Another nine remarkable cultural projects received grants for their community-oriented cultural projects. Erik Hansen, a Maynard resident, initiated a civic effort to make Maynard an exceptional Boston-area cultural destination. His labors culminated in the public mural, “Maynard as a Canvas.” The town Board of Selectmen gave Erik preliminary support to reach out to commercial property owners. He learned that the owner of the old Murphy Snyder Building, located at the intersection of Routes 62 and 27,

was willing to allow the walls of his building to be painted by an award-winning mural painter. The Maynard Cultural Council invited proposals from New England artists and received more than eighty entries from all over the world. The list of applicants came down to six finalists. The public will be invited to participate in selecting a People’s Choice award from the six finalists at the Assabet Valley Cultural District’s annual grant awards show from 6:30 – 7, and the winner will be announced at 8. The mural will be painted during the summer of 2018. Watch for updates on the fall ribbon cutting event.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

MAYNARD COMMUNITY GARDENERS PLANT SALE MAY 19TH AND APRIL 22ND ARBOR DAY EVENT The Maynard Community Gardeners (MCG) are hosting their 24th Annual Plant Sale on Saturday May 19th at the corner of Maple and Summer Streets in Maynard from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. MCG’s plant sale is the group’s biggest fundraising event of the year and a great way to kick off the growing season by providing novice and seasoned gardeners alike with a large variety of plant choices to get the growing season underway. According to event organizer Loretta West, “All of the plants we sell either come from Brigham Gardens or are donated by members and non-members who want to share their abundance which really helps to keep costs low right in time for spring planting.” The plant sale provides a great opportunity to choose from a wide variety of plants that flourish locally. “We’ll have flowers, vegetables, hanging plants, perennial’s, annuals, herbs, and

The Arbor Day Foundation’s table will feature information about the Foundation and Maynard’s Tree City USA designation. Information about local walking trails, tree planting and tree care, and how to avoid losing tree limbs in storms will also be available at MCG’s table at the event from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. At both events, the Maynard Community Gardeners will showcase their role in Maynard such as taking care of the flower buckets & planters at the town library and in downtown Maynard including Maplebrook Park and decorating the traffic triangle at Nason & Main Streets. New members can join MCG at either event and can get more information about volunteering. The group is also seeking donations of books and videos to its gardening collection at the Maynard Library. Feel free to bring your donations to either event. As MCG’s President Alexandra Howard noted, “Both our annual plant sale and our table at the Earth Day event in Maynard are great opportunities to join the Maynard Community Gardeners and to connect with other new and seasoned gardeners. We also host events for our members throughout the year including our garden tour where we share tips and gardening advice.” For more information see the Maynard Community Gardeners’ website at www.maynardgardeners.com.

SPRING CLEANING CAN ALLEVIATE ALLERGIES Allergies affect people of all ages. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology reports that allergic rhinitis affects between 10 and 30 percent of the world’s population. In addition, the prevalence of allergic diseases has risen in industrialized nations for more than 50 years. Seasonal allergies tend to be the strongest in spring and autumn. Allergies can be exacerbated by many factors, including in homes where improvements are being made. Regular housecleaning can remove many common allergy triggers and help alleviate symptoms. Knowing which common home improvement mistakes can aggravate allergies can help homeowners avoid them.

Having the air conditioning a professional cleaner who will clean and dry the carpet as running can help filter the air as well. quickly as possible. Use exhaust fans The AAAAI recommends using an exhaust fan in the kitchen and bathrooms to reduce the levels of moisture in these rooms and filter out potential allergens and odors. Moisture can eventually lead to the growth of mold and mildew, which isn’t healthy for anyone, including allergy sufferers, to breathe in. Invest in a HEPA filter Vacuums with HEPA filters can trap allergens that are so small that they pass through regular vacuum filters. That means instead of containing them, these small particles are only being shot back into the air where they are easily breathed in. WebMD suggests vacuuming once or twice a week to keep carpets and floors as clean as possible. Plus, don’t forget to vacuum upholstered furniture and drapes as well.

Damp dusting is better When cleaning up dust or home renovation debris, use a damp cloth or a vinegar solution to wipe down surfaces. This helps trap small particles instead of sending them into the air. Treat mold issues Mold can trigger allergic reactions, so it is best to keep it out of a home. Solutions that contain at least 10 percent bleach can be effective at killing mold, but it’s best to prevent mold from growing entirely. That means keeping tabs of any moisture issues and addressing them immediately. Allergies can be problematic, but routine home cleaning in the right way can help alleviate symptoms. SH182702

Launder with hot water When it comes time to wash linens, do so in hot water, which can kill dust mites residing in sheets and blankets. Employ mattress covers to further protect against dust mite allergies. Shampoo smart Shampooing a carpet may cause moisture to become trapped in the carpet fibers, leading to increased dust mites or mold growth. Spot-clean stains instead. Otherwise, hire

action unlimited But did you know, your home poses dangerous risks to the birds that visit your yard and garden? Window strikes are common among many species of migrating birds, and millions of wild birds are killed annually flying into windows. Whether you are an avid amateur ornithologist or just a casual observer of feathered friends in flight, by taking precautions your home need not be part of the problem. Take advantage of the fact that birds can see certain light frequencies that humans cannot to make windows visible to birds in a way that won’t obstruct your own view. Doing so can be a simple home project completed in just an afternoon. Try applying UV decals and UV liquid to your home’s windows and sliding glass doors. Those from WindowAlert, for example, have been proven to effectively alter the flight path of birds to prevent window strikes. While the coating will look like etched glass to the human eye, it will look very visible to a bird. As UV reflectivity may fade over time, it’s important to replace the decals and liquid every four months. Application techniques can be found by visiting WindowAlert.com. “Turning your home into a refuge for birds is a simple way to save lives and protect the creatures that beautify your yard and, in the case of hummingbirds, pollinate your garden,” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert. Schock also recommends planting trees, shrubs and flowers that provide birds with nourishment and shelter, as well as paying attention to pet cats when they are outdoors, to ensure they don’t hunt the birds that visit. This season, be a better friend to birds by taking a few simple measures in your home and garden.

ADD FIRE SAFETY TO YOUR FAMILY’S ROUTINE (BPT) - Think of all the items you replace regularly - your cellphone, lightbulbs and even your toothbrush. But when was the last time you replaced your smoke alarm batteries, or even the alarms themselves? It’s easy to overlook, but the time to think about fire safety is now - before an emergency strikes. Many assume that because they have smoke alarms in their homes, they’re protected in the event of a fire. In reality, smoke alarms need to be installed, maintained and tested regularly to ensure they’re working properly. That effort includes knowing how old smoke alarms and their batteries are, as neither lasts forever. While smoke alarm lifespan and sensing technology have improved in recent years, the fact remains that all smoke alarms - even hardwired and sealed battery models - expire after 10 years.

First Alert offers the following advice to ensure your family is best protected from fire. Count the alarms - In most cases, one alarm isn’t enough. In fact, the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), recommends smoke alarms be installed inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement, as well as one carbon monoxide (CO) alarm on each level and in each sleeping area. A quick and easy way to remember is one on every level and in every bedroom.

“According to the National Fire Protection Association (www.nfpa.org), three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or from missing or dead batteries,” said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert. “Just like other household duties, it’s important to make sure alarm maintenance and replacement and escape planning and practice become a regular, ongoing part of your family’s routine.”

Install them properly - Does your alarm ever sound when cooking? Chances are, you’ve installed the alarm too close to your appliances. An easy way to reduce false alarms and maximize coverage is to take a moment to review manufacturer guidelines and install alarms in the proper locations. Smoke alarms should generally be installed at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms. It’s also recommended to install smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings. Remember, smoke rises, so high placement provides a direct path for detection. Lastly, don’t install smoke alarms near windows, doors or ducts, where drafts might interfere with their operation.

action unlimited Get complete coverage - In general, there are two types of fires - quick flaming and smoldering. Today’s smoke alarms are effective at detecting both but use unique technologies that make them better suited for particular locations within the home. The NFPA and other safety advocates recommend installing dual-sensor alarms like the First Alert 10-Year Battery Dual Sensor Alarm because they provide the best potential for early detection of all types of common household fires while helping to reduce the number of non-emergency alarms - all while providing a decade of protection without the need for costly and ongoing battery replacement. Install and maintain - Having smoke alarms is only one part of the story. In order to function properly, all alarms must be regularly inspected and maintained. Make sure to test the alarm, by simply holding down the test button, at least once a month. Also, when testing, it’s important to clean the alarm to remove any dust or debris. This advice holds true even for newer alarms, which feature 10-year batteries, as well as hardwired alarms that feature a battery back-up. Check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall.

INTRODUCE EARTHWORMS INTO THE GARDEN Gardeners eager to revitalize their lawns and gardens may spend hundreds of dollars on tools and products designed to improve soil and growing conditions. Although many of these items can be advantageous, gardeners also may want to look to nature’s best garden helpers: earthworms. It is believed that nearly 3,000 different types of earthworms inhabit the planet. Worms have been around for hundreds of millions of years. Worms can be seen as bait dangling on fishing lines or as meals for red-breasted robins. But these subterranean dwellers play their biggest role beneath the soil. Earthworms move through dirt as they search for food. The worms consume particles in the soil, helping to recycle materials like dead leaves, plant parts, decaying animals,

ACTON CARPET

and feces. Through their travels, worms also serve to aerate the soil. Worms bring the subsoil closer to the surface and mix it with the topsoil. Earthworms’ castings also help naturally fertilize the areas in which they reside. The slimy mucus that worms leave behind contains nitrogen, which also helps to amend the soil. The University of Illinois Extension says most earthworms found, particularly in North America, can only grow so long, even though some worms seem like they stretch forever underneath the ground. Depending on the type of worm and how many segments it has, as well as its age and ability to get nutritious foods, worms typically reach only a few inches in length, offers National Geographic. There are some anomalies, however. The Oregon giant earthworm is one of the largest earthworms found in North America, growing to more than three feet in length. That worm is very rare, however. In 2016, a 16-inch-long earthworm was discovered in England and became part of the collection at the Natural History Museum in London. Some Australian and South American earthworms are known to grow much larger.

24th

Worms need the correct mix of oxygen, moisture and favorable temperatures to survive. If they do not have these components, they will seek them out elsewhere. Because of the many benefits earthworms provide, they can be a boon to landscapes.

PREPARING GARDEN BEDS FOR SPRING AND BEYOND

Gardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil. Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful flowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients. Soil composition Many gardeners prefer growing a variety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in one’s garden and making the necessary modifications so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs, or flowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, according to the plant company Proven Winners, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil. Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense, or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.

saturday, april 14, 2018

pg. 13A

Nutrition Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can benefit from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants flourish throughout the growing season.

Cultivation Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots, and other items will help prepare the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil — about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.

HOW TO STREAMLINE HOUSEHOLD CLEANING

Travel down the cleaning aisle of a neighborhood store and you will be met with product after product designed for specialized cleaning. There are sprays for windows, cleansers for electronics, carpet-cleaning foams, and scouring solutions for tubs and showers. Although many of these are effective, the average person can rely on just one cleaning aid for a wide variety of tasks: vinegar. Vinegar is a versatile product that can be used in everything from cooking to pickling to preserving foods to household cleaning. Vinegar is made by two distinct biological processes, offers The Vinegar Institute. Via fermentation, yeast will first change the natural sugars in the vinegar-to-be material solution into alcohol.

The second process involves a group of bacteria called “acetobacter,” which convert the alcohol into an acid. Vinegar can be made from any fruit or natural material containing sugar. For the purpose of generalized cleaning, white vinegar is the most common type used and is typically made from corn. Utilizing vinegar around the house is quite simple, and can be used in various ways around the house. • Remove lime buildup. Vinegar is good for cleaning faucets and showerheads. Make a paste of one teaspoon of vinegar and two tablespoons of salt. Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth. Fill a plastic baggie with vinegar and attach to the showerhead with a rubber band. Let sit a few hours to overnight and then rinse away the mineral deposits. • Brighten laundry. Add 1⁄2 cup white vinegar to the wash cycle. It will help loosen stains and brighten clothing. An added benefit is the acid will reduce static cling. • Disinfect cutting boards. Give cutting boards an extra cleaning by spraying them with straight vinegar, then rinsing to clean. • Clean the disposal. Make sure food residue doesn’t clog garbage disposals and lead to odor. Mix vinegar and baking soda in the drain and allow the bubbling action to remove built-up residue. Use a scrub brush for extra scouring. • Get streak-free windows. Mix a 50-50 solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Use to clean windows and other glass surfaces. Wipe away with a microfiber cleaning cloth so no lint is left behind.

• Eradicate pet odor. Pour a little bit of vinegar into an empty litter box. Let stand for around 20 minutes, then rinse with cold water. Vinegar also can be used to blot up pet stains on the carpet. Just test color-fastness in an inconspicuous area first. • Banish water stains. Fix water stains and rings on wood furniture by mixing equal parts vinegar and olive oil. Use a soft cleaning cloth moving in the direction of the wood grain. Polish using a clean cloth. Vinegar can be used all around the house — these were just a few of the dozens of ways to rely on vinegar. Just steer clear of using it on natural stone and marble, as the acid could cause damage.

ADDRESSING SPRING ANT PROBLEMS

The return of warm weather in the spring often marks the return of animals and insects as well. The spring season is a popular time for insects to mate and build nests. This also may be a time when homeowners see ant “swarms” in or around their homes.

saturday, april 14, 2018

pg. 15A

• Keep a clean house. Use vinegar, soap and water to clean areas where ants are seen. Many leave a scent trail of pheromones to tell others where to go for a food source. • Treat carpenter ants at the source. Carpenter ants will not bring back food to the nest. Instead, sprinkle diatomaceous earth, or DE, around outdoor nests to eradicate colonies. • Work with an exterminator. If home remedies do not work, con-

Ants and termites are social creatures, and when their colonies become too large, flying ants will spread out in search of new territories and to establish new queens. This mobility may also be coupled with an increasing number of ants marching on the ground and scaling walls.

Although many species of ants are harmless, homeowners do not want to see ants inside their homes — especially in large numbers. The following strategies can help homeowners address ant infestations this spring. • Identify the type of ant around your property. Consult with online guides or books to identify the species of ant on your property. Knowing which species of ant is in or around your home can help you address the problem more effectively. • Create a food trap. Ants are attracted to various food sources, such as fats, sweets and proteins. Mixing a very small amount of a food with boric acid can help control ant populations. Ants will bring tainted food back to their colonies and perish.

3 MAJOR HOME RENOVATIONS THAT ARE WORTH THE EFFORT (StatePoint) Building a new home? Overhauling an existing one? Here are three renovation ideas that will add beauty and value.

Now Booking For Spring Painting INSIDE & OUT OF YOUR HOME

Expand Your Living Space Don’t let that basement sit unfinished and unused. Substantially expand your home’s livable areas by turning your attention to the bottom floor. Finishing a basement is an involved project, potentially requiring electrical and plumbing work, insulation, drywall and more -- but the end result is worth the effort and expense. What’s more, some of the less technical aspects of this renovation could even be DIY-ed. Before getting started, consider what type of space would most benefit your household long-term. You may even be able to recoup some cost of the investment. For example, turning your basement into an at-home fitness center means ditching the costly gym membership. Want to reduce time and money on your commute? Your basement may just make an ideal home office.

Add a Focal Point Is your interior design in need of a little something? The right eye-catching elements can make a room pop while adding vitality to your living spaces. A fireplace, for example, adds ambiance and comfort while also creating a natural gathering space. What’s more, new models pair the charm of a traditional open-front fireplace with the design flexibility of gas models. The Phoenix TrueView from Heat & Glo offers the convenience of gas without the glass, giving homeowners an unobscured view of the flames against the traditional brick or fade-resistant reflective black glass liner. An optional Bluetooth speaker system allows one to hear the fire as well as see it -- making it a focal point for the ears as well as the eyes. Boost the Backyard If you find that your household spends very little time in the backyard, figure out why. Is there a lack of shade? Are there not enough places to sit? Take a poll so you can diagnose the problem and take steps to correct it. Consider also how to make this space usable for a larger portion of the year, such as adding a fire pit or an enclosed, heated patio. Lastly, consider aesthetics. COMPOSITE DECKING CAN BE A SMART CHOICE Decks add character and functionality to a home, increasing outdoor entertaining space and oftentimes improving the resale value of a home. Homeowners have various options when choosing decking materials, but one such option, composite decking, is growing in popularity.

Decks used to primarily be made from pressure-treated lumber. While lumber remains a popular material, more and more homeowners are opting for composite decking products. As anyone who has pressure-washed, stained and sealed wood decks can attest, such spaces require lots of upkeep to look new year after year. Composite decks require much less maintenance, making them highly attractive to homeowners who would rather spend time using their decks instead of maintaining them. Composite decking is any type of decking material that is formulated from different recycled materials. The majority of these materials include hard plastic and wood shavings of pulp. Unlike wood, which can fade, crack and rot, composite decking, which has been available for roughly a decade, does not degrade quickly and requires very little upkeep. Available in a variety of wood colors to match outdoor decor, composite decks also can feature artificial wood grains to make them look similar to wood planks. Although composite decks are not completely impervious to the elements, with some occasional washing to impede mold growth and new technology that has improved stainresistance, many of the pitfalls of other materials can be avoided with composite decks.

The newer systems have channels for hidden fastening, and the composite deck tiles snap into place. Composite decks do have a few drawbacks. They can be expensive — nearly double the initial cost of wood decks. And although they don’t rot, composite planks can scratch. Without refinishing, damaged boards will need to be replaced. Harsh chemicals may fade color and damage the composite materials, so caution is needed. Composite decking remains an in-demand choice for outdoor spaces. Low-maintenance and long-lasting, these decks have quickly become favorites among homeowners. GT174902 CAPTION: Composite decking can mimic the look of wood, but requires much less maintenance. Composite decking fits in with eco-friendly lifestyles. The planks are made from recycled materials that would normally end up in landfills. Products from Trex, a popular composite decking manufacturer, are made from 1.5 million shopping bags and wood mill waste. As composite decks do not rot away and are long-lasting, they will not need to be replaced frequently, which is another ecofriendly benefit. Program At Assabet Valley Camera Club On Wednesday, May 2, the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) is pleased to host Eric Vickery, a Massachusetts-based adventure and travel photographer, who will share his passion for the outdoors and the environment by presenting a multi-media show on the incredible beauty of Iceland and Greenland as well as the global importance of these Arctic regions. Eric has had the good fortune to join photographers from ten other countries on a winter visit to the south coast of Iceland to experience ice caves, auroras and glaciers. Photographic experiences on this trip enabled him to work with and contribute to The Arctic Arts Project whose mission is to educate, inspire and provide perspective on the kinetic evolution of the Arctic. The Project’s goal is to present a visual body of work that will reveal a unique perspective of climate change in the Arctic. For more information, visit their website at http://arcticartsproject.com. Continuing his association with The Arctic Arts Project, Eric journeyed to Scoresby Sound in East Greenland recently with another photographic team on the Schooner Donna Wood to experience the raw existence of the remote landscapes and Inuit settlements. To complement the considerable experience and talent of this photographic team, Eric provided support for aerial perspective with drone video and still photography. The scale and beauty of these regions is truly beyond words and better shared visually. Vickery, an active member in the Camera Club of Central New England, has presented this program in his native town of Lunenburg as well as other locations in Central Massachusetts. Eric’s passion for travel and adventure go hand and hand with his love of photography. To see his work, visit http://vickeryphoto.com. The presentation is free and open to the general public. AVCC welcomes anyone interested in learning more about photography as a visual

action unlimited art and its practical application as a science. Meetings are held at 7:30 PM on the first and third Wednesday of each month from September through early June in the Great Room at the Hudson Senior Center, 29 Church Street. For more information check out the AVCC website at assabetvalleycc.com or contact John Gill, club President, at 978-293-5192.

Walker is a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music.
