Gentle Evening De-Stress Yoga At Emerson Hospital Wind down after a busy day with accessible, low-impact yoga stretches and postures that calm the nervous system, increase mobility of the joints, and build strength and balance. Learn to free yourself of tension with special yoga breathing and medi-

tation techniques. You owe it to yourself to end the day on a path to optimizing wellness. Yoga postures combined with therapeutic breathing not only relieve stress and tension from body and mind, but are weightbearing, and helpful in strengthening bones and raising resting metabolic rate for weight loss. Students will move safely, with modifications that allow each person to custom-fit the poses.

Each class ends with a luxurious restorative pose. Did you know that research has shown a yoga practice to be more effective than physical therapy for lower back pain? That there was a 22 percent improvement in aierobic capacity, improving six out of seven measures of respiratory function, according to the studies? That new studies show that it significantly improves bone strength in the spine and hips? That it can supercharge your brain, increasing memory and focus? That it improves balance? That it helps improve sleep? And that it slows aging? This class is for everyone,

from the inflexible office worker to the weekend warrior athlete looking to stretch, and for anyone needing to alleviate stress or anxiety and promote parasympathetic dominance in his or her life. No yoga experience required. Instructor has practiced yoga for over thirty years and taught for eighteen years. New session starts Wednesday, March 7, 5:30-6:45. Classes are held at the beautiful new Steinberg Wellness Center for Mind and Body at Emerson Hospital 310 Baker Road, Concord, MA (not at the hospital). Explore China’s ‘Art Of Resistance’ At Middlesex Community College Middlesex Community College will present “The Art of Resistance,” an illustrated talk by art historian Shelley Drake Hawks, at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 5, in the Bedford Campus Center, 591 Springs Road. The

Hawks, an MCC faculty member, will share the story of Chinese painters who refused to let their art become propaganda during China’s Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). This talk is drawn from Hawks’ book, “The Art of Resistance: Painting by Candlelight in Mao’s China,” a gorgeously illustrated work that offers a new look at an era still little known in China. It is a story about art and history, as well as about a group of undaunted individuals who refused to surrender their inner freedom. Hawks, of Concord, is a writer and historian who teaches art history at Middlesex. She has also taught at Mount Holyoke College, Boston University, UMass Boston and Rhode Island School of Design. She holds a master’s degree in Asia Regional

Celebrate Women’s History Month Through Music Exploring Women’s History through Folk Song presented by Diane Taraz. Passed down for generations, folk songs provide insights into the lives of ordinary people in centuries past. Diane mines these traditional songs for clues to the inner lives of people in Europe and America from

about 1500 to 1850, especially women. Audiences are fascinated by the way attitudes and beliefs from the past still echo in our lives today. Women left few written records, but we can learn much about them through the music that they used to speed their work, lift their spirits, or ease an aching heart. With a sparkling voice and wry humor, Diane performs songs of love, childbirth, marriage, and adventure. Diane performs in traditional dress and plays lap dulcimer and guitar. She often sings with voice alone, the most authentic style. These are songs that brim with energy and humor, determination and

Here’s How It Works:

Answers:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

What’s Happening At The Library…. Alice Paul and the Fight for Women’s Rights with local author, Deborah Kops: Tues., March 6 at 7 p.m. In January 2017, when hundreds of thousands of women—and men—marched in Washington, DC, and in cities and towns around the country, the name Alice Paul popped up in some of the newspaper accounts. About a century earlier, Alice Paul, a young Quaker woman, had organized a giant march in Washington in support of votes for women the day before Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration. That march woke up the sleepy women’s suffrage movement and galvanized it into action. In her book Alice Paul and the Fight for Women’s Rights, Deborah Kops describes the life and times of one of the most dedicated and brilliant leaders of the battle for the ballot. After women won the vote, Paul went right on fighting for women’s rights. She wrote the Equal Rights Amendment in
