Writing For Wellness Workshop At The Healing Garden For those on a healing or spiritual path, writing can be soul soothing. But sometimes it’s hard to get started. In this workshop, we explore and express our emotions by writing in response to inspirational prompts. Writing prompts are helpful tools for both beginning writers wonder-

Each week a new prompt is offered, and we write in response for 20 minutes. Then, those who wish to share read aloud their writing (optional). By reading aloud, our emotions are given a voice. edge our pain, have it witnessed, and are able to let it go, which leads to healing. Participants will respond to each other’s writing as respectful listeners offering positive feedback about what is interesting and memorable about the writing. Because the writing is brand new, no criticism will be given. Each week you’ll write a draft of a poem, a story, a memoir, or a narrative nonfiction piece. And, if you share it aloud, you will know what in your writing is strong, so you can continue writing the piece on your own. Bring a notebook and a pen. Writing For Wellness Workshop is held at The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden, 145 Bolton Road, Harvard, MA, Thursdays, 10:00-11:30. The cost is $40 for a 4-week session. This workshop is open to the community, as well as to Healing Garden Clients. All are welcome! To register, call 978-456-3532 or email Kelly at: kelly@healinggarden.net Writing for Wellness Workshop is taught by Michele Order Litant, who has a BFA in Creative Writing and is a certified Amherst Writers & Artists Writing Workshop Instructor.

In addition to teaching writing workshops, she is a published writer who has worked as an editor for major publishers, and organized and led a writers’ critique group. Littleton Community Farm And Human Services Littleton Community Farm (LCF) President and founder Amy Tarlow-Lewis, and Director of Elder and Human Services Pamela Campbell discussed their vision of increasing fresh vegetable to local programs. Tarlow-Lewis began the joint presentation by outlining some of the Community Farm’s goals and achievements, such as inspiring and educating the community in organic farming methods. In 2015, the group farmed just over one acre of land, enriching the soil, establishing plans, and using

environmentally friendly goats to eradicate poison ivy on the farm. Volunteers gave over 2500 hours of their time and included Boy Scouts and a church youth group. In cooperation with Loaves and Fishes, LCF donated 2,000 pounds of locally grown produce to the needy. In addition, 281 pounds of food consisting of 8 different crops were harvested and donated to Boston Area Gleaners, and distributed to food access agencies in the Boston area. Educational programs consisted of Family Activity Days, nature walks in partnership with Drumlin Farm, a Winter Film Series, a gardening workshop and Bee Hive information. Upcoming

plans include installation of a greenhouse-like structure that will enable an extended growing season. Funding of the LCF and its activities are realized via Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shareholders. Purchase of the shares prior to the growing season allows LCF the capital needed for the upcoming season and provides the purchaser with the promise of fresh, locally grown produce. Director of Elder and Human Services Director Pamela Campbell indicated that purchase of shares on the town’s behalf could help increase fresh vegetables for those who could benefit from this bounty: examples include senior citizens and the soon to be reopened community EL

Program Provides Free Access To Tax Prep Software (NAPSI)—There’s good news for taxpayers looking for a safe way to save money at tax time. Thanks to a public-private partnership between the IRS and a coalition of industry-leading tax software companies, there’s a program that provides qualified taxpayers with free, online, namebrand tax preparation software products. Called the IRS Free File program, it’s designed to make tax time easier by walking taxpayers who qualify through the filing process online and ensuring that they capture all the credits and deductions they deserve. To take advantage of the program, taxpayers must have an adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less. By using the program, eligible taxpayers can easily and accurately complete their federal tax return with trusted name-brand tax preparation software products. Since its creation in 2003, the Free File program has donated 40 million federal tax returns. That translates to a total savings for taxpayers of more than $1.3 billion in tax preparation costs donated. Approximately 70 percent of U.S. taxpayers are eligible for the Free File program. The Power Of Technology Ed Black, president and CEO of the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA), said that the Free File program is a great example of the power of technology to improve the lives of all Americans. Black added that CCIA is proud to support Free File and will be working this year to help ensure all eligible taxpayers are aware of this “important program.” Additionally, 20 states plus the District of Columbia sponsor a state-level Free File program, allowing eligible residents to easily and accurately complete both their federal and state taxes for free. For more information, visit the websites at www.irs.gov/freefile and www.taxprephelp.org.

How to Ease Your Tax Burden (NewsUSA) - If you owed taxes last year or received a refund that was larger than expected, it may be a good idea to adjust the amount you’re having withheld from your paycheck. As the end of the year looms, there’s still time to talk to a licensed tax specialist about your withholding and other possibilities for easing your tax burden. Here are some tips for lastminute tax savings from America’s tax experts, the National Association of Enrolled Agents -- a group of licensed tax practitioners who focus solely on

For 2013, the annual gift tax exclusion is $14,000 ($28,000 for married couples making split-gifts). Qualified individuals can also make a gift to charity from IRA funds, but only through the end of the year. • If you can itemize deductions, giving to charity may also reduce your tax bill. Clip the list to the receipt from the organization, and keep it with your tax documents for your records. • Sometimes, a major life change is thrown your way, and you might not think of it as a tax deduction. If you found yourself looking for a new job, then agency fees, resumé expenses, career counseling costs and travel related to the job search may be deductible even if the job search was unsuccessful. • On January 1, 2013, the new 3.8 percent net investment income (NII) surtax took effect. The surtax, which was passed by Congress to help fund health care reform, is imposed on the net investment income of higher-income individuals, estates and trusts that exceeds certain thresholds. Generally, the surtax applies to passive income but can also hit capital gains from the disposition of property. New strategies should be considered to minimize, if possible, the surtax. There is also a new 0.9 percent Additional Medicare Tax that reaches higher income individuals. • Watch the news! Keep an eye on what’s happening with taxes as the year draws to a close. If Congress keeps to past practice, late tax legislation might mean a delay to the start of the tax-filing season. If any adjustments in your plan need to be made, you won’t be too late. Is Your Teenager Struggling With Behavioral Challenges? Experts agree that children and adolescents are growing up in an increasingly complex and stressful world full of social and academic challenges. Some of our kids are struggling to manage these challenges due to biological, psychological and/or social issues. An evidence-based program, NAMI BASICS is taught by trained parent volunteers who themselves have children with these issues. The program runs for 7 weeks and covers topics such as neurobiology, problem solving skills, listening and communication skills, accessing services and supports, crisis management and caregiver self-care. NAMI BASICS Classes start Tuesday, March 15, 7:00-9:30, Acton, MA.

Checklist For Expectant And New Dads by Armin Brott, “Mr. Dad” (NAPSA)-Today’s dads-to-be are a whole new breed. They really want to be involved in pregnancy and infant care, and they also want to be a strong partner for mom. Here is a checklist that expectant dads can follow to prepare for the big day-and the joyous years to follow: When You’re Expecting... ✓ Be an active participant. Go to all of your wife’s OB visits. Take a childbirth prep course and commit to being with your partner throughout the whole labor and delivery. ✓ Plan ahead. Who’s taking off work after the baby comes and for how long? Have discussions about such important topics as breastfeeding, circumcision and birth plan now. ✓ Think about money. Now is a good time to rewrite your will (or write one in the first place), buy life insurance and even start a college savings plan. ✓ Get the house ready. Make sure you’ve got a baby-safe crib. In addition, stock plenty of diapers and baby wipes. Prewash the clothes and blankets a baby will need in the first few days. ✓ Get current with the latest news about parenting, health and infant care. Access smart sites such as verybestbaby.com for insightful articles, downloadable guides, videos and interactive tools that can help you and your wife prepare for baby’s arrival and track baby’s growth and development. ✓ Jump in! Don’t worry about

action unlimited making a few mistakes. Being a good dad-just like being a good mom-comes with practice. ✓ Be a partner, not a helper. The more responsibility you take on, the happier your wife will be and the stronger your relationship with your wife and your baby will be. ✓ Stand your ground. If you’re feeling left out, talk to your wife about it. Show her that you’re serious about wanting to be an equal participant. ✓Support breastfeeding. Ideally, your baby should have nothing but breastmilk for the first six months. Nursing is sometimes hard for new moms. Make sure your partner gets plenty of fluids and rest. ✓ Don’t forget your relationship. Set aside some time every day to talk with your partnerabout something other than the baby. Most importantly, enjoy this special time in your life. It’s in everyone’s best interests for you to do everything you possibly can to become an involved father. It’s not easy, but the rewardsfor you, your children, and your partner-are incalculable. Increasingly, new dads are striving to be partners in the care

of their infants.

Make Ordinary Dining An Extraordinary Experience (NAPSA)-Preparing family meals shouldn’t become just another routine chore in your household or an additional task at the end of the day. There are simple tips to help make any at-home dining experience a fun and special treat for you and your loved ones. From experimenting with different table settings to offering a new take on traditional dishes, a few easy steps can truly change the look and feel of any meal. Below, Lulu Powers, renowned Hollywood caterer and celebrity personal chef, offers straightforward tips that will add fun and flavor to everyday dining! Destination Dining: No need to jet set around the world to taste different cuisines-mix things up by setting a theme for your next meal and serve international dishes from your favorite country. Experimenting in the kitchen can be hassle free by using Pepperidge Farm(r) Puff Pastry

sheets and shells; they’re easy to use and very versatile for a variety of meals. For example, Blueberries Vol-au-Vent from France or Mexicali Napoleons from south of the border will impress diners and please their palates, too! Amazing Atmosphere: Arrangement often enhances even the simplest of dishes and it’s easy to spice up any meal with a fabulous presentation. Serve food in colorfully lined baskets or on different geometric-shaped platters. Scour flea markets for vintage-looking serving pieces. Don’t worry about matched place settings; the more variety, the more original your table will look. Family Time: Quality time shouldn’t be reserved for weekends or special outings. Invite everyone into the kitchen and make mealtime a family time by assigning each person a key job. For example, kids love dessert, so let them create their own with the Easy and Delicious Sumptuous Pepperidge Farm(r) Puff Pastry Fruit Tart-a dessert even the tiniest chefs can make! Or have someone make homemade breadsticks and place them in the middle of the table so everyone has something to share throughout the meal. Flexible Spending Accounts Help Consumers Manage Money (NewsUSA) - For many, getting their financial house in order is top of mind in the initial months of the new year. And, when doing so, experts say people should consider including a flexible spending account as part of their overall financial strategy.

There are two types of flexible spending accounts: unreimbursed medical and dependent day care. At the beginning of each plan year, a flexible spending account allows an elected portion of a person’s salary to be redirected to provide reimbursement for certain types of medical and day care expenses not reimbursed by other sources. For example, those who know that they will incur annual expenses for over-the-counter medicines can elect a specific yearly dollar amount that they spend on these bills to be put aside. According to Michael Flock, Aflac second vice president of Benefits Services, flexible spending accounts save consumers money by reducing their taxable income. Taxes are calculated after the elected amount is deducted from a salary, meaning that a person simply won’t be taxed for the income that’s spent on eligible medical or day care expenses. Flock suggests the following tips for managing your flexible spending account: • Double-check your receipts. Many over-the-counter medicines are eligible for reimburse-

ment, so review all receipts before discarding them. • Monitor your reimbursements. Be certain that your reimbursements have been paid in full or are scheduled to be processed when your next deduction is received. • Prepare for the Social Security impact. While almost all employees benefit from the tax savings of a flexible spending account, your pre-tax contributions to the account may slightly reduce your future Social Security benefits. The value of your tax savings will likely offset this slight reduction, but still consider your tax savings carefully. • Be careful when estimating your elected amount. Accurately estimating your elected amount is important. Due to an IRS requirement, money that remains in a flexible spending account after the run-off period will be forfeited. Legislation allows for a one-time, tax-free rollover of the unused funds before they are forfeited. “Before making an election, you should consult with your tax advisor to determine which of the available dependent care tax exemption programs will be

pg. 25

the most beneficial to you,” says Flock. In addition to accessing their flexible spending accounts through filing claims, consumers can also use the Aflac Now Card, a debit card made specifically for flexible spending accounts. According to Aflac, the advantages of having this card include immediate access to funds, the ability to reload the card for future plan years and easy online access to account information. For more information about flexible spending accounts, see IRS Publication 503 on the IRS’ Web site at www.irs.gov or visit www.aflac.com.

How Marriage And Divorce Can Impact Your Taxes (NAPSI)—When it comes to your taxes, marriage changes everything. From choosing the correct filing status to determining what is and is not taxable, tax time can bring some unwanted stress if you’ve been recently married or divorced. To help, here are some tips: • Choose the right filing status. Your filing status determines most of the amounts on your tax return, including tax bracket, exemptions and eligibility for credits and deductions. Your choice of status ultimately depends on whether you are married or unmarried on the last day of the tax year—generally, December 31. If you are still in the process of going through a divorce, then you are still considered married. The IRS only considers you unmarried if you have a final decree of divorce or separate maintenance at the end of the year. Unmarried persons generally use the single filing status. However, you can file as head of household if a qualified dependent lives with you. Married persons can file either jointly or separately. When filing

jointly, the income and deductions of both spouses are combined on one return. Filing a joint return means both of you are liable for any tax liability, even if only one of you earned the income. While filing separate returns relieves you from liability of your spouse’s tax, your tax rate is generally higher and you won’t be allowed to claim certain credits, including the Earned Income Credit and education credits. DIY tax preparation solutions can help you weigh the benefits and costs for each married filing status. A popular and affordable product, TaxACT Deluxe, prepares a joint vs. separate report that breaks down your return by both statuses to help you choose the most advantageous. • Not all costs of marriage or divorce are deductible. You cannot deduct the costs of getting married or divorced. You can, however, deduct any legal fees you paid for tax advice related to divorce and any legal fees you paid to receive alimony. • Know the rules about alimony and child support. Alimony is payment written into the divorce papers for the purpose of supporting the recipient spouse. Child support, on the other hand, is a payment from the noncustodial parent to the custodial parent, intended to give the child a lifestyle similar to what it was before the divorce. Alimony you receive is taxable income and must be included as income on your tax return. Remember to give your Social Security number to your former spouse to avoid a $50 penalty. Alimony you pay is deductible, even if you don’t itemize deductions. You must include your former spouse’s Social Security number on your tax return in order to claim the deduction. • Save time and money now and next year. If your name has changed, remember the names

This season, combine two luxurious flavors— pomegranate and chocolate— which complement each other for a memorable treat. Pom Chocolate Cupcakes Makes 24 cupcakes Cupcakes: Juice from 2-3 large POM Wonderful Pomegranates,* or 1 cup POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups granulated sugar 1⁄2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt 1 cup water, heated to boiling 3⁄4 cup vegetable oil 2 tablespoons vinegar (not wine vinegar) 1 tablespoon vanilla Pomegranate Chocolate Frosting: Juice from 1 large POM Wonderful Pomegranate,* or 1⁄4 cup POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice 6 tablespoons butter 1 6-oz. package chocolate chips 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups powdered sugar 1-2 tablespoons whole milk Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting: 1 8-oz. package cream cheese 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon vanilla 21⁄2 cups powdered sugar 1 tablespoon whole milk Garnish: 1 cup arils from 1-2 large POM Wonderful Pomegranates Cupcakes: Prepare garnish— Score 1-2 fresh pomegranates and place in a bowl of water. Break open the pomegranates under water to free the arils (seed sacs). The arils will sink to the bottom of the bowl and the membrane will float to the top. Sieve and put the arils in a separate bowl. Reserve 1 cup of the arils from fruit and set aside. (Refrigerate or freeze remaining arils for another use.) Prepare fresh pomegranate juice* and preheat oven to 350° F with rack in the center. Place a paper baking cup in each of 24 regular-sized muffin cups. Whisk together the dry ingre-

Add to the flour mixture all at once and whisk to combine (batter will be lumpy). Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups—about half full. Bake 25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean and free of crumbs. Let cool. Frost with pomegranate chocolate or vanilla cream cheese frosting and decorate with arils. Pomegranate Chocolate Frosting: Prepare fresh pomegranate juice.* In a saucepan, bring pomegranate juice and butter to a boil. Remove from heat;

blend in chocolate chips. Stir in vanilla and powdered sugar. Beat until frosting is of spreading consistency. If frosting is too stiff, add 1-2 tablespoons of milk to thin. Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting: With an electric mixer, beat together cream cheese and butter. Add vanilla, powdered sugar and milk, and beat until frosting is of spreading consistency. * For 1 cup of juice, cut 2-3 large POM Wonderful Pomegranates in half and juice them with a citrus reamer or juicer. Pour the mixture through a cheesecloth-lined strainer or sieve. Set the juice aside.

Tips To Help Safeguard Seniors Against Financial Crimes (NAPSA)-The holidays are often synonymous with shoppingon Main Street, in malls and online. Unfortunately, not everyone is looking for the best deal,

saturday, february 27, 2016

but instead, the easiest opportunity to steal from unsuspecting Americans. Identity theft, robbery and check fraud are increasingly prevalent during the holidays-and seniors are often the targets of such crimes. To safeguard against financial crimes this holiday season, the National Sheriffs’ Association offers these timely tips for seniors and those who care for them: • Don’t carry important personal information in your purse or wallet. With the holiday shopping season under way, purse snatchers and pickpockets are on the prowl, looking for distracted shoppers from whom they can steal cash and personal information. Be sure your purse or wallet does not include sensitive information such as your Social Security number, personal identification numbers (PINs) and passwords. A thief can use these details to order checks or credit cards, apply for loans or otherwise commit fraud using your name. • Use direct deposit. Your mailboth incoming and outgoing-can be vulnerable, especially during the holidays when criminal activity is heightened. If your Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) check or other payments are delivered by mail to an unlocked box, you may be at risk for theft. Direct deposit eliminates the risk of lost or stolen checks, reduces fraud and gives people faster access to their money on payment day. Direct deposit also protects against identity theft. To sign up for direct deposit of your Social Security or SSI payment, call the Go Direct helpline at (800) 333-1795 or sign up online at www.GoDirect.org. It’s free and takes less than five minutes. • Know who you’re dealing with when you shop online. If you shop online, be certain the

business is legitimate. If you have not heard of the company before, it is always a good idea to check with your local Better Business Bureau before making any purchase or providing personal financial information. • Don’t let your holiday trash become a thief’s treasure. Identity thieves have become experts at picking through your trash. What’s worse, during the holidays, there may be a delay in garbage pickup, meaning your trash could be sitting outside, unprotected, for an even longer period of time. Make sure you shred every document headed for the trash that may have personal information, including check stubs, credit card applications, monthly bank statements, receipts and other documents that thieves can use to commit fraud. • Pay careful attention to your holiday credit card bills and bank statements. Whether or not you are a person who relies heavily on your credit card during the holiday season, make sure you are the only one who gets to make this decision. Carefully check your credit card and bank statements to ensure no one else is using your card and illegally making purchases in your name. If you notice anything suspicious, or if you suddenly stop receiving credit card or bank statements, contact your financial institution immediately. For more information from the National Sheriffs’ Association, visit www.sheriffs.org.

Any Time Can Be The Right Time For Cherries (NAPSA)-Canned, frozen and dried tart cherries are a welcome ingredient in just about any pantry. This versatile, nutritious fruit can play a tasty role in a wide variety of meals.

For example, when the weather turns crisp, here is a fun variation on traditional cherry pie. It can be a great addition to family gettogethers, school gatherings, even for a fall picnic. It’s quick and easy to prepare, and the ingredients are easy to have on hand. Cherry Crisp Pie 1⁄4 cup (1⁄2 stick) butter or margarine 3⁄4 cup quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats, uncooked 1⁄2 cup all-purpose flour 1⁄2 cup firmly packed light- brown sugar 1⁄2 cup chopped pecans, if desired 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 (21-ounce) cans cherry pie filling 1 (9-ounce) prepared graham cracker crust (10-inch) Melt butter in medium saucepan. Remove from heat and stir in oats, flour, brown sugar, pecans, if desired, and cinnamon. Spoon pie filling into crust. Sprinkle oats mixture over top. Place pie on a baking sheet. Bake in a preheated 375-degree oven 40 to 45 minutes, or until topping is golden brown. Cool on wire rack, then refrigerate at least 4 hours before serving. Makes 8 to 10 servings. Cherry Crisp Pie is one of seven new cherry recipes developed by the Cherry Marketing Institute. All recipes are on easy-to-read recipe cards, so you can store them away to use again and again. To order the free recipe cards, write to CMI: The Cherry People, P.O. Box 30285, Dept. New, Lansing, MI 48909 or send an e-mail to assistant@usa cher ries.com and request new recipe cards.

Female, 1 year old, black & white I came to the shelter with my 3 kittens and not a single one looked like me. Since they were so adorable, they got adopted very, very quickly. When you meet me, you might think I’m only 7 or 8 months old but I’m a year old, just very petite. I absolutely love being petted and will let you know with my kitty cries when I want more attention. Also, I just love having my chin and the top of my head scratched. Don’t stop, Ill make a very contented face and you might even chuckle a little. All cats are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. Please visit our website at www. catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents, fill out an adoption form or purchase our handmade crafts made by our volunteers.
