More Couples Are Embracing Edgy, Adventurous Weddings Brides and grooms once felt compelled to conform to the trappings of traditional weddings. From uberromantic vows to pastel colors to the penultimate white tiered cake, various wedding components were long considered must-haves. But modern couples are increasingly expressing their individuality, and even embracing more edgy and adventurous elements, when planning their weddings. According to The Knot, a leading bridal resource and information site, today’s weddings are not what they were just a few years ago. Bold colors, exotic cakes and nontraditional foliage, are just some of the elements modern couples are embracing to set their weddings apart. Adventurous locales Vineyards and catering halls can be great places to tie the knot, but couples who like to push the envelope are looking to more adventurous locales to impart their unique spin on their weddings. Sharing vows atop a mountain crest at the end of a favorite hiking trail or on a roller coaster at a theme park that harkens back to a first date are some adventurous places to tie the knot. Outside-the-box menus Couples may want to break with tradition by offering a wide selection of foods at their receptions. These foods can include items that fit with their specific ethnic cuisines, gourmet comfort foods (think cocktail franks wellington), or foods that fit with their dietary choices, such as organic or vegan options. Work with a caterer to provide a variety of tasty choices. Bold wardrobe choices Brides can put new spins on their gowns by adding color and texture. Sequins, bold embroidery, shorter hemlines, and whatever adventurous fashion style you want to impart can be considered. If white isn’t your thing, that’s okay, too. Yellow and slate gray look great together. Gentlemen can choose to wear a black suit or any combination of color and style they want to make a dramatic impression.

Full of flavor Cakes don’t have to be white with white buttercream. In fact, couples can make things even more tasty by incorporating favorite flavor combinations into their cakes. For example, a chocolate and caramel filling reminiscent of a candy bar might be something to consider. Modern couples are embracing bold, unique and edgy components when planning their weddings. Putting an individualized spin on the ceremony and reception can make couples even more excited to tie the knot.

OPEN YOUR HOME TO A LOVING COMPANION

Tabitha I’m Tabitha, a sweet and petite girl kitty, also known around my foster home as “mama-mama”. I arrived at Carmah quite pregnant. Now that I have successfully raised my kittens, I am ready to go to my own forever home. I was a very serious and dedicated mother, so I’m hoping that in my next home I am pampered to the utmost - I have earned it! I am not shy but I need to be reminded how to play and relax. I do purr when I am picked up. I am more of a “next to you” cat than a lap cat, but I might be able to learn! But oh, please scratch my chin and my neck, and I will close my eyes in pleasure and purr away! I’m not too fond of the respectful dogs in my foster home, so I’m sorry about this, but no dogs please! I’m almost two years old, very tiny, and in fine health. Will you be the one who helps me remember the joys of being a cat?

Stock the car for roadside emergencies Disasters can happen in a flash, and having a plan in place for common emergency situations can make it easier to handle adverse conditions, particularly when away from home. According to MFASCO Health and Safety, a supplier of first aid supplies and kits, 90 percent of people do not carry first aid supplies or other emergency gear in their vehicles. Among those who may carry supplies, 30 percent never check to determine if they’re in good working order. The National Safety Council says that drivers should always keep emergency supply kits in the trunks or cargo areas of their vehicles. Kits should be inspected every six months, and worn out items should be replaced. Roadside emergency kits can make the difference between getting back on the road safely or being stranded for hours. Such kits also may help prevent or treat injuries, potentially saving lives. Weather should be considered when preparing vehicle emergency kits, which should include the following. • A properly inflated spare tire and tire-changing equipment • Jumper cables • A multipurpose utility tool and/or tool kit • Flashlight and batteries • Flares or triangle reflectors • An extra quart of motor oil • A first-aid kit containing at the least, gauze, tape, bandages, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, nonlatex gloves, scissors, hydrocortisone, thermometer, tweezers, and instant cold compress • A blanket • A tire pressure gauge • A portable tire inflator • Paper towels • Nonperishable, high-energy foods • Drinking water • A reflective vest • Duct tape • A fire extinguisher • An ice scraper • A folding shovel • Coolant and washer fluid • A phone charger • Baby/child supplies, if pertinent • Rope Keep roadside emergency kits organized at all times. Store items securely in a milk crate, box or backpack so they are always readily available. People should familiarize themselves with the items in the kit so they know how to use them correctly and quickly. With some planning and organization, drivers can have the supplies they will need to make it through roadside emergencies safely.

Wedding Flowers Becoming Larger Than Life Couples are moving away from traditional centerpieces to floral chandeliers and curtains made of blooms for their weddings. Move over bouquets and centerpieces. Flowers are taking over weddings in a big way. While wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place at the wedding table. The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say much about the couple’s style. Many modern couples are opting for statement pieces with their flowers to rival the big and bold ideas they’re incorporating elsewhere into their occasions, such as in cakes and clothing. In fact, floral designer Tom Uberuaga says traditional hurricane vase centerpieces are outdated and only focus the eye on the middle of the table. He prefers guests enter the wedding and have their senses stimulated by flowers from all angles. Large flower installations, as well as blooms popping up in unexpected places, are some of the hot trends for couples to keep their eyes on. Floral chandeliers There’s no need to worry about seeing over table centerpieces or flowers getting in the way of photo moments. Thanks to hanging flowers and floral chandeliers, flowers are quite literally moving up in the world. Hanging floral pieces can add instant drama and make a large visual impact. Florists can hang flowers from beams over tabletops to increase visual impact, whether as individual baskets, single stems or floral swags. Hanging floral chandeliers are dramatic but naturally expensive. Think about a large installation that forces guests to look up into a sea of greenery and flowers. The smell and the sight can be breathtaking. Welcome wreaths Why should wreaths only be reserved for front doors and holiday decor? A welcome floral wreath can be placed by the entryway to a chapel or reception hall with a heartfelt sentiment that shows guests how much they’re appreciated.

Fairy-tale flowers A floral curtain of hanging flowers can line a chuppah or drape the altar in beautiful blooms. Couples who would like a fairy-tale entrance also can make their debut as a couple by coming through a flower curtain at the reception. Martha Stewart Weddings says a cascade of flowers and greens can be romantic and elegant. Dance floor blooms Who says flowers have to be overhead or on a table? With a plexiglass dance floor, or one made from some other transparent material, flowers can be underfoot, creating a magical floral carpet. Floral necklaces Brides needn’t carry their bouquets, they can wear ethereal and whimsical floral pieces around their necks or on their waists instead. Couples are urged to speak with their florists about the innovative ways they can make flowers an even more awe-inspiring component of their weddings.

Keeping It Real In The Kitchen (NAPSI)-Here’s food for thought: more than 80 percent of moms believe ‘real’ ingredients are an important consideration when making food purchases, according to a national survey by MARC Research. The survey also revealed the top three deciding factors for moms when purchasing foods are taste, nutrition and inclusion of real ingredients. “Foods made with real ingredients just taste better,” said Gale Gand, nationally recognized restaurateur, cookbook author and pastry chef. “As a pastry chef, I prefer fresh ingredients that are either homemade or taste like it but, like many busy moms, I don’t always have the time to make meals and treats from scratch. “A whipped topping, like Reddi-wip, is my first choice when I can’t make whipped cream from scratch because it contains real dairy cream, unlike some other leading brands that contain a mix of hydrogenated oil and water. Also, it’s fun for kids and pleasing to parents because it’s made from real ingredients and has only 15 calories per serving.” The kitchen can be a great place to whip up some family togetherness, yet some moms are faced with serving picky eaters. In fact, one in four moms have a hard time getting their kids to eat whole grains, such as oatmeal, and more than 10 percent of moms face a similar challenge in getting their children to eat dairy foods and fresh fruits. A dollop of Reddi-wip can help moms by turning a simple bowl of fruit, oatmeal, pancakes, pud-

Savoring A Simple Yet Classic Taste Of France (NAPSI)-Enjoying the savory charms of French cooking can be easier than you might imagine, if you remember to stock the right ingredients. One example is Pernod, a versatile, anise-flavored spirit that can add distinctive French flavor to many dishes. Poussin Pernodine is a classic French recipe that’s bright with flavor and well suited for simple dinner parties or a quick and delicious meal at home. This dish can be a great way to celebrate Bastille Day or any day. Classic herbs enhance the flavors of fish and poultry, and a bit of Pernod works like a bouquet garni. Poussin Pernodine 1 teaspoon fennel seeds 2 tablespoons (1 oz.) butter, cut into small pieces 1 teaspoon mixed dried herbs 2 tablespoons grated lemon rind 1 tablespoon chopped parsley Salt and freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons oil 4 poussin (you can substitute 2 Cornish game hens or 4 whole chicken breasts, skin on and bone in) 1/2 pint chicken stock 1 tablespoon Pernod 2 egg yolks 1/2 cup (4 ozs.) light cream or half and half Directions: 1. Mix together the fennel seeds, mixed herbs, parsley,

salt and pepper. Sprinkle the mixture over the inside and outside of the poussin. 2. Heat the oil in a large casserole, add the poussin and fry on all sides until golden brown. Add the stock and Pernod and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover and cook gently for 40-45 minutes until the poussin are tender. 3. Remove the poussin from the stock and keep warm while preparing the sauce. Blend together the egg yolks and cream, add to the stock and cook gently, stirring, until the sauce is thickened. Do not allow to boil. Add the butter, one piece at a time, stirring constantly. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. 4. Mix the parsley and lemon rind. Place each poussin on a plate, pour the sauce around it and sprinkle with parsley and lemon. The Various Types Of IRAs Discussions about retirement planning typically include mention of individual retirement accounts, or IRAs. IRAs are retirement investment vehicles that can be used in place of or in conjunction with 401(k) plans. Many investors like IRAs because they give them a certain measure of choice in regard to their investments while allowing investors to postpone paying taxes on gains until money is withdrawn during retirement. One common misconception about IRAs is that there are only two types, when there actually are many more. Depending on which definitions and resources you go by, there are as many as 11 types of IRAs. Financial advisors can help people choose the appropriate IRA based on their needs and goals. Here’s a look at just a few of the more popular IRAs. Traditional IRA Traditional IRAs are very popular, according to data from the Investment Company Institute. Classic features include a tax break of up to $6,000 initially, and investment earnings are not taxed as long as the money remains in the account. Money Management International says one advantage of a traditional IRA is that contributions can be taken as tax deductions in the tax year they are made. This type of IRA might be good for someone who anticipates being in a lower tax bracket upon retiring, since taxes are paid when funds are withdrawn. Roth IRA A Roth IRA is different than a traditional IRA in various ways. Contributions to a Roth IRA are not taxdeductible, but funds will grow tax-free. Also, with a Roth IRA, the taxes are paid upfront, so account holders will not pay taxes when the money is withdrawn. This is beneficial for those who expect their income tax bracket to rise after retirement. SEP IRA This type of IRA is a traditional IRA, but one set up and funded for employees by an employer. SEP stands for simplified employee pension. Employers must contribute equally to all employee accounts, and personal contribution limits are much higher for these accounts than on other tax-favored accounts. Spousal IRA

The financial resource The Motley Fool notes that spousal IRAs are either traditional or Roth IRAs funded by a married taxpayer in the name of his or her spouse who has less than $2,000 in annual compensation. The couple must file a joint tax return in the year of the contribution. Education IRA (EIRA) Not all IRAs are strictly for retirement funds. EIRAs help pay for higher education. No tax deductions are allowed, but deposits and earnings may be withdrawn tax-free so long as they are used to pay for higher education. IRAs are tax-advantaged tools for setting aside funds for retirement and other needs.
