In seinem Haus in Vailima, nahe der Hauptstadt Apia, hat er die letzten vier Jahre seines Lebens verbracht. Es ist liebevoll als Museum hergerichtet. Fast könnte man meinen, Stevenson wohne noch hier: Da hängen Familienfotos an der Wand, der Autor mit strengem Scheitel im weißen Anzug oder auf seinem Lieblingspferd Jack. "Stolz und Vorurteil" von Jane Austen liegt aufgeschlagen auf einem Tisch. Ausgestellt sind Erstausgaben der "Schatzinsel" und von "Dr. Jekyll und Mr. Hyde". Im Kinderzimmer liegen Puzzle- und Dominosteine auf dem Boden, als seien seine Stiefkinder Isobel und Lloyd nur kurz hinausgelaufen.

Der lungenkranke Autor starb hier 1894 mit 44 Jahren. Er hatte in der Idylle Samoas seinen Seelenfrieden gefunden: "Hier liegt er wo zu sein er sich sehnte/zu Hause ist der Seemann, zu Hause von der See/und der Jäger zu Hause von den Bergen" dichtete er zehn Tage vor seinem Tod für seinen Grabstein. Er steht auf dem Gipfel des Vaea, eine halbe Stunde vom Haus bergauf. Zu Füßen liegt dem Betrachter dort Apia und der Rest der Insel Upolu.

Strand, P alme und Ko ko snuss Samoa besteht aus zwei großen und acht teils unbewohnten kleinen Inseln. Die Insel Savai'i ist zwar größer, aber die meisten der 177.000 Einwohner leben auf Upolu. Apia hat rund 35.000 Einwohner. Die Inselgruppe liegt auf halbem Weg zwischen Hawaii und Neuseeland. Sie ist an tropischer Üppigkeit kaum zu überbieten, eine Schatzinsel der Natur.

Upolu und Savai'i sind vulkanischen Ursprungs. Vom Gipfel erstrecken sich grüne Täler bis zu den weißen Sandstränden und blauen Lagunen.

Strand, Palme und Kokosnuss - manches Paradiesklischee ist hier Realität.

"Das Land ist so fruchtbar, dass manchmal sogar die hölzernen Lampenmasten wieder anfangen zu sprießen und zu Bäumen werden", sagt Redakteurin Marjorie Moore von der Zeitung "Samoa Observer" bei einer Rundfahrt über Upolu. Die beiden Hauptinseln sind fast immer satt grün, mit Palmen, Regenwald und Blumen in allen Farben. Obst und Gemüse wachsen fast ohne Zutun.

"Wir sind mit allem gesegnet, was für ein gesundes Leben nötig ist", sagt Tasalaotele Sapolu. Sie hat im Ausland als Pilotin Karriere gemacht, jetzt baut sie in ihrer Heimat einen Wellnesstempel mit samoanischen Naturprodukten auf. Honig-Scrub mit Kokosflocken zum Körperpeeling etwa und Massage mit Avocado-Öl.

Besucher bestaunen die tropische Vielfalt auf dem Markt Maketi fou: Jede Menge Bananensorten, Kokosnüsse, Taro, die schmackhafte Wasserbrotwurzel, sowie je nach Saison Ananas und Papaya - Gemüse und Obst gibt in allen Farben und Formen. Palusami ist ein köstlicher Snack: Taroblätter, Spinat und Kokosnuss-Saft, in Bananenblatt eingeschlagen und im Ofen gebacken, gibt es an jeder Ecke.

Ebenso Oka: roher in Zitronensaft marinierter Fisch mit Kokosnuss, Zwiebeln, Gurken und Tomaten. Festessen werden in Samoa im traditionellen Umu-Ofen gebacken: in der Erde, mit Feuer und heißen Steinen. Die Zutaten kommen in Bananenblättern auf die Steine, darüber werden Blätter gelegt. Das Garen dauert Stunden.

Zur Erfrischung gibt es Niu, gekühlte Kokosnuss. In der Schale gibt es nur eine Stelle, an der das Loch für den Halm einfach eingedrückt werden kann. Dazu gibt es eine Legende: Sina war ein wunderschönes Mädchen, und sie hatte einen kleinen Aal. Als der Aal größer wurde, verliebte er sich in sie. Sina bekam Angst, rannte fort, und ihre Mitbewohner töteten den Aal. Im Sterben flehte er Sina an, seinen Kopf in der Erde zu vergraben.

Daraus wuchs eine Kokospalme. Die Früchte haben drei kleine Dellen, die aussehen, wie Augen und Mund eines Aals. Nur die Munddelle kann leicht eingedrückt werden. Jedes Mal, wenn Sina aus einer Kokosnuss trank, küsste sie den Aal. Kava zum Frühstück

Es wird eigentlich bei wichtigen Zeremonien kredenzt, aber auf dem Markt von Apia trinken Männer auch schon morgens Kava.

Die ersten Europäer kamen im 18. Jahrhundert, die deutsche Kolonialzeit dauerte ab 1900 nur 19 Jahre. Trotzdem erinnert immer noch einiges daran, zum Beispiel Nachnamen wie Tetzlaff und von Reiche. Oder die Währung, die Tala heißt. Die Samoaner hegen keinen Groll. "Wenn ich mein Leben noch einmal leben könnte, würde ich Deutsch lernen", sagt das Staatsoberhaupt Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese. Mehrere seiner Großtanten heirateten Deutsche, er hat Verwandte in Düsseldorf. "Wir betrachten die Kolonialzeit mit Nostalgie. Unter den Deutschen ging es manchmal etwas rau zu, aber sie haben unsere Kultur respektiert."

Samoa ist seit rund 3000 Jahren besiedelt. Die ersten Europäer kamen im 18. Jahrhundert. Louis Antoine de Bougainville nannte die Inseln 1768 Navigator Islands. 1828 kamen die ersten Missionare. Danach richteten mehrere Länder Handelsstationen ein, darunter Deutschland, mit besonderem Interesse an Kokosnussplantagen. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg landeten die Neuseeländer in Samoa und vertrieben die Deutschen. Samoa wurde Mandatsgebiet Neuseelands.

1962 kam die Unabhängigkeit.

An der Uferpromenade ist deutsche Kolonialgeschichte zu besichtigen, etwa in Form des alten Gerichtsgebäudes. Das Holzhaus wurde zu Kaiser Wilhelms Zeiten gebaut und war Amtssitz des ersten Gouverneurs Wilhelm Heinrich Solf. Später wurde es Gericht. Nach dem Ende des deutschen Kolonialabenteuers war dort Verwaltung untergebracht. Ein Verein versucht das nötige Geld aufzutreiben, um jetzt daraus ein Kulturzentrum zu machen. Ein bisschen weiter steht ein Denkmal, dass an Dutzende deutsche Seeleute erinnert, die am 13. März 1889 in einem Taifun umkamen, der die Schiffe SMS „Adler” und SMS „Eber” im Hafen zerstörte.

An der Promenade liegt auch ein kleines Fale, eine traditionelle überdachte Plattform, die als Treffpunkt für Freunde und Familie praktisch zu jedem Haus gehört. Hier liegt Sonny Natanielu nur scheinbar entspannt auf einer Bastmatte. Tätowiermeister Petelo Suluape treibt die scharfen in Tinte getunkten Zinken mit einem Hammer in seinen Oberschenkel. In Samoa ist Tätowierung eine uralte Tradition, früher trugen alle Männer die rituellen Muster, vom Knie bis zum Bauchnabel. Heute ist die Praxis wieder im Kommen. „Es ist meine Identität”, sagt Natanielu.

Reisezeit: Samoa hat das ganze Jahr ein tropisches Klima, mit zwei Jahreszeiten: nass und trocken.

Von November bis April regnet es oft, die Region erlebt öfter Taifune. Die Monate von Mai bis Oktober sind weitgehend trocken. Die Durchschnittstemperatur liegt bei 29 Grad. Das Wasser ist rund 20 Grad warm.

Unterkunft: Hotels und Gästehäuser nach internationalem Standard. Man kann mit Kreditkarte bezahlen.

Visum: Europäer mit Weiterflugticket bekommen ein 60-Tage-Visum bei der Einreise.

Geld: Die Währung ist Tala (100 Euro entsprechen etwa 300 Tala - Stand: Mai 2013). Banken tauschen Geld. Am Flughafen, in Apia und größeren Ortschaften gibt es ATM-Maschinen, an denen mit der Kreditkarte Bargeld gezogen werden kann.

Sprache: Englisch ist zweite Verkehrssprache.

Internet: Viele Hotels und Gästehäuser bieten WLAN, ebenso Cafés. Es gibt in den größeren Orten Internetcafés mit Computern.

Gesundheit: Impfungen sind nicht nötig. Malaria ist unbekannt. Gegen das Stechen von DengueMücken hilft guter Mückenschutz. Es gibt Krankenhäuser. Bei komplizierten Problemen ist die Ausreise nach Neuseeland empfohlen.

SPTO runs pre-WTM training roadshow THE SOUTH Pacific Tourism Organisation supported by Tourism Fiji, Papa New Guinea, Samoa and Tahiti will be hosting a three date pre-WTM training roadshow.

MTPA develops new strategic tourism direction DURING THIS year's WTM, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) will be promoting the launch of Emirates' A380 from Dubai to Mauritius.

The tourism authority is also developing a new strategic direction for next year which plays on the island’s active and wellbeing product, with the aim of attracting visitors during the low and shoulder winter season, which is traditionally a better value time to visit.

Many hoteliers are also backing the MTPA’s new focus Quad biking in Mauritius with their own individual initiatives. As examples, St Regis has launched its own kite-surfing school, LUX is providing a comprehensive sports calendar and, at One&Only Le Saint Géran, water-ski champion Francis Koot is now a resident coach.

Christliches Inselparadies: Samoa - alte Welt trifft neue Welt gemeinsam mit dem Pulenuu, einer Art Ortsvorsteher über Gesetze und Richtlinien in der Gemeinde. So hat der Ältestenrat teilweise sogar mehr Macht als die Polizei. In einigen Gegenden gibt es deshalb keine Hunde, in anderen dürfen Männer beispielsweise keine langen Haare tragen und oft werden sogar Geldstrafen verhängt für alle, die am Sonntag nicht die Messe in der Kirche besuchen.

Für interessierte Touristen lohnt es sich in jedem Fall, einen Sonntagsgottesdienst zu besuchen und mit eigenen Augen die lebendige Religion und Kultur der Samoaner zu beobachten. Mit der richtigen Kleidung und entsprechendem Verhalten stehen auch jedem Fremden die Kirchentüren der Dörfer offen. Die Gesänge sind zudem wunderschön und gehören schon fast zu einer Samoa-Erfahrung dazu. Jeder Urlauber sollte sich jedoch auch bewusst machen, dass es aufgrund dieser Kultur und Religion im Alltag gewisse Regeln zu beachten gibt:

- Während des Abendgebetes (meist 18-19 Uhr) sollte man nicht durch das Dorf laufen.

- Der Sonntag muss als Ruhetag akzeptiert werden. Obwohl viele touristische Einrichtungen wie Restaurants und Tourenveranstalter offen haben, wünscht man ein ruhiges respektvolles Verhalten.

- Heruntergekommene Kleidung im Dorf wird nicht geduldet und kann in Geldstrafen für die Gastgeber enden.

Samoa is shaping up to become the Action Capital of the Pacific during the Southern Hemisphere winter months where sport-lovers can push themselves to the limit with a variety of sporting competitions, namely the inaugural ‘Samoa Half Iron Man’ Competition, on 10 August 2013 Samoa’s first long distance triathlon. Visitors are encouraged to get involved in all events and put their fitness levels to the test against the might of the Polynesians.

The Half Iron Man course runs across the main island of Upolu, a diverse landscape dotted with a lush green mountainous interior. Visitors are encouraged to come and find their inner warrior for the inaugural Samoa Half Iron triathlon. The 2km swim course will take place in Apia Harbour with the 90km ride passing through the villages to the east on the north coast of Upolu taking in some of the island’s most magnificent scenery. The 21km run is the final leg and takes in two circuits of the historic Apia Harbour. www.samoahalfironman.com The event is the pinnacle of Samoa’s sporting summer calendar of ocean swims and multisport races.

The Triathlon series is already well underway in Samoa with its fourth race taking place on 22 June 2013 providing a perfect warm up to the upcoming Samoa Half Iron Man. The Triathlon features both a long and sprint course, with the fifth race taking place on 20 July 2013 featuring an Olympic distance event with a 1km swim, 30km bike ride and a 4km run. In addition to the adult events, there is also the Tamatoa Kids Triathlon for budding athletes.

The Samoa Swim series 2013 is another perfect way to limber up muscles with some last minute training. The event runs from 31 July until 02 August 2013 and features three great swims in three days.

Over this time, swimmers will cross the clear deep waters of the South Coast Tafatafa Lagoon, through the fish and coral at Falefa Falls with the final leg across the Mulivai Lagoon ending at Maninoa Beach.

Every village on Upolu seems to have a little whitewashed chapel, which springs to life on Sunday with rousing song and passionate sermon. I sat in the back with four other palagi (foreigners) as the service got

The congregation was strictly divided: young girls on the left side, young boys on the right side, adults in the middle comprising the heart of the choir. The electric keyboard did no justice to their lofty voices, and they could have easily done without and sung the whole thing a cappella, their hymns floating out the open windows and mixing with the birdsong outside.

Samoa is shaping up to become the Action Capital of the Pacific during the Southern Hemisphere winter months where sport-lovers can push themselves to the limit with a variety of sporting competitions, namely the inaugural ‘Samoa Half Iron Man’ Competition, on 10 August 2013 Samoa’s first long distance triathlon. Visitors are encouraged to get involved in all events and put their fitness levels to the test against the might of the Polynesians.

The Half Iron Man course runs across the main island of Upolu, a diverse landscape dotted with a lush green mountainous interior. Visitors are encouraged to come and find their inner warrior for the inaugural Samoa Half Iron triathlon. The 2km swim course will take place in Apia Harbour with the 90km ride passing through the villages to the east on the north coast of Upolu taking in some of the island’s most magnificent scenery. “The team’s nickname is Toa which means warrior and we are fighters with The Rock (former wrestler Dwayne Johnson) our ideal Samoan male.

“Warrington is crazy about rugby league and if we make it to the quarter final it will feel like a home game for us as this is our home too now.”

And chairman of Rugby League Samoa and New Zealand Tafilelea Fa’avae Gagamoe believes the players will settle in quickly in the area as they share the same sense of humour as residents in the town.

The former Air New Zealand sales manager, who has been working as a volunteer alongside Warrington Borough Council, said: “When I first stepped off the plane it felt like I was on a movie set seeing double decker buses and the English mail boxes.

“There was something really familiar about the place and I realised it was from the Hugh Grant movies Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral!

“I don’t think it’s going to be much of a cultural shocker for the Samoan team as people in Warrington have the same great personality and great sense of humour.

“They love life and their   families as we do.”   The executive member of   RugbyLeague Samoa hopes to have a stall on Warrington Market ahead of the tournament promoting the South Sea island and teaching shoppers about the language and culture as well as arts and crafts and World Cup merchandise on sale.  He  is also in talks with the University of Chester regarding  a scholarship programme for youngsters as well as looking at

UP to 150,000 partygoers gasped in awe at the great fireworks of London as the capital saw in the New Year last night.

They flocked to the Thames to “taste” the fun-packed atmosphere — with apple and cherry-flavoured mist, banana confetti and peach “snow” showering the crowds.

Despite rain, it turned out to be a brolly good show as the sky lit up against the iconic backdrops of the London Eye and Big Ben. Mayor Boris Johnson hailing it the “world’s most dazzling display”.

Crowds also gazed in wonder at huge events in other UK cities and those across Earth as the world celebrated the start of

2014. NEWCASTLE’s civic centre lit up and at EDINBURGH’s Hogmanay street party 80,000 flocked to see pop’s Pet Shop Boys.

Earlier, the Pacific island of SAMOA was the first nation to see in the New Year — at 10am UK time.

Then it was over to New Zealand with the highlight a pyrotechnic display at AUCKLAND’s Sky Tower. Two hours later in Australia, SYDNEY hosted three monster shows across four miles of the harbour.

The Philippines put on a brave face after Typhoon Haiyan. In TACLOBAN, which bore the brunt of the November 8 storm, crowds enjoyed a concert while aid agencies dished up free dinners. Also in the Far East, spectacular displays lit up HONG KONG, SINGAPORE, JAKARTA, Indonesia, and the Petronas Towers in KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia. In TAIWAN the 1,670ft Taipei tower was rigged with fireworks.

APIA. Touristische Infrastruktur gibt es auf Samoa kaum – genau das macht den Reiz der Inseln im Südpazifik aus.

Samoa zählt zu den Ländern, die als erste das neue Jahr begrüssen. Der kleine Inselstaat im Südpazifik liess den 30. Dezember 2011 ausfallen und hüpfte über die Datumsgrenze.

Rund um den Globus war Samoa für einmal in den

Schlagzeilen – davor und danach hörte man nicht viel vom anderen Ende der Welt, wo die Zeit sowieso anders läuft. «Leg deine Uhr ab, von jetzt an gilt Inselzeit», sagt Guide Anthony zur Begrüssung.

Lange behielten die stolzen, traditionsbewussten Samoaner ihre Strände für sich.

«Eigentlichen Tourismus gibt es erst seit circa 15 Jahren», erklärt Anthony. Auch heute noch gibt es in Samoa kaum touristische Infrastruktur –

und genau das ist es, was den Reiz der Inseln ausmacht. Am besten entdeckt man sie mit dem Mietauto. Die Dörfer, die man dabei passiert, sind nach dem Häuptlingssystem organisiert. Ihre Sitzungen halten die Bewohner in grossen, offenen Pavillons ab, die gleichzeitig als gut gelüftetes Wohnzimmer dienen. Bunte Schilder und Wegweiser machen auf die Attraktionen aufmerksam. Wer anhält, wird mit einem herzlichen «Talofa!» begrüsst. Einem

schotten sich hier die Honeymooner nicht in 5-Sterne-Komplexen ab. Internationale Hotelketten gibt es keine, das Luxusangebot ist verschwindend klein. Touristen übernachten in so genannten Beach Fales.

«Leg deine Uhr ab, von jetzt an gilt Insel-Zeit» Touristische Infrastruktur gibt es auf Samoa kaum. Genau das macht den Reiz der Inseln im Südpazifik aus.

Seit zwei Jahren gehört Samoa zu den Ländern, die als erste das neue Jahr begrüssen. Der kleine Inselstaat im Südpazifik liess den 30. Dezember 2011 ausfallen und hüpfte über die Datumsgrenze, um sich mit seinen wichtigsten Handelspartnern Australien und Neuseeland in der gleichen Zeitzone zu befinden. Rund um den Globus war Samoa für einmal in den Schlagzeilen. Davor und danach hörte man nicht viel vom anderen Ende der Welt, wo die Zeit sowieso anders läuft.

Hier z a h lt m a n d irekt beim Hä u p tling «Leg deine Uhr ab, ab jetzt gilt Insel-Zeit», sagt Guide Anthony zur Begrüssung. Von Pünktlichkeit halten die Samoaner nicht viel. Ausser es spielt die Polizeiband, die jeden Morgen um 8.45 Uhr ihren grossen Auftritt hat, eines der wenigen Überbleibsel aus der deutschen Kolonialzeit. 1962 wurde Samoa von den Neuseeländern in die Unabhängigkeit entlassen, wobei es sich nur um Westsamoa mit den beiden Inseln Savai'i und Upolu handelte. Die weiter östlich gelegenen Inseln stehen bis heute unter der Hoheit der USA. West-Samoa war das erste politisch selbstständige Land im Pazifik.

Lange behielten die stolzen, traditionsbewussten Samoaner ihre Strände für sich.

«Eigentlichen Tourismus gibt es erst seit circa 15 Jahren», sagt Anthony. Auch heute noch gibt es in Samoa kaum touristische Infrastruktur. Und genau das ist es, was den Reiz dieser Inseln ausmacht. Am besten entdeckt man sie mit dem Mietauto. Die Dörfer, die man dabei passiert, sind nach dem Häuptlingssystem organisiert. Ihre Sitzungen halten die Bewohner in grossen offenen Pavillons ab, die gleichzeitig als gut gelüftetes Wohnzimmer dienen.

W a sserfä lle u nd end lose Strä nd e Bunte Schilder und Wegweiser machen auf die verschiedenen Attraktionen aufmerksam. Wer anhält, wird mit einem herzlichen «Talofa!» begrüsst. Die wenigen Tala Eintritt drückt man direkt einem der Dorfältesten in die Hand, die im schattigen Bungalow auf Besucher warten. So vertreibt man sich den Tag zwischen Wasserfällen, Natur-Rutschbahnen, Wasserfontänen, Lavafeldern und mit Wasserschildkrötenfüttern und erfrischt sich zwischendurch mit einer Kokosnuss, die auf dem Markt oder am Strassenrand angeboten wird.

Im Gegensatz zu anderen Südseeparadiesen schotten sich hier die Honeymooner nicht in Fünfsterne-Komplexen ab. Internationale Hotelketten gibt es keine, das Luxusangebot ist verschwindend klein. Touristen übernachten in so genannten Beach Fales. Die Strandbungalows variieren in der Ausstattung und sind schon ab circa 50 Franken pro Nacht erhältlich. Dafür gibt es ein Bett, ein Moskitonetz, direkten Blick auf das Meer, eine angenehme Brise - und das Gefühl, im Paradies angekommen zu sein. (sei)

ajatalon takapihalla heilahtaa pitkä ­vii­dak­koveitsi. Palmun latvassa kypsynyt kookos­ pähkinä halkeaa kauniisti keskeltä.

Istun nurmikolla seuraa­ massa umu-lounaan valmistusta. Savun tuok­ suun sekoittuvat kookoskerman, mustekalan ja banaaninlehtien aromit. Perinteistä maauunissa kypsennettävää umu-ateriaa nautitaan Samoalla joka sunnuntai ­kirkonmenojen ­jälkeen. Monissa paikallisten omistamissa maja­taloissa myös ­matkailijat saavat samat tarjoilut. ”Tähän keittiöön ei naisilla ole asiaa. Samoal­la miehet valmistavat perinneruuan”, tokaisee ­isäntämme Taoipu Opetaia ja antaa seuraavalle kookospähkinälle kyytiä.

Samoalaisäijät eivät käytä juhla-aterian valmis­ tuksessa maustemittoja tai vispilöitä. Työkaluina toimivat viidakkoveitset ja puoliympyrän muotoi­ nen metallinpala, jolla kookoksen liha kaiverre­ taan irti pähkinän sisuksesta. Raasteesta miehet puristavat käsivoimillaan kookoskerman ulos.

Kermaa käytetään herkullisten palusami-kasvis­ nyyttien täytteenä.

Palusamit ja juurekset asetellaan hellana toimi­ vien kuumennettujen laavakivien päälle. Kuuluu mahtava sihahdus, kun kiville heitetään kokonai­ nen mustekala. Sitten koko aterian komeus pei­ tellään banaaninlehdillä ja jätetään kypsymään. ”Parin tunnin päästä syödään”, Opetaia sanoo ja käy pitkäkseen nurmikolle.

Samoalla meri kohisee ja palmut heiluvat kaikkialla.

Kookoshedelmät haetaan tuoreina.

Niistä tehdään muun muassa kookoskermaa ja palusami-nyyttien täytettä. Kivillä kypsennetään tonnikalaa.

SAMOA ON YKSI NIISTÄ Tyynenmeren saari­ ryhmistä, joille monet haaveilevat pääsevänsä kerran elämässään. Havaijin ja Uuden-Seelan­ nin puolivälissä sijaitsevalla Samoalla nauti­ taan ­luontoretkistä, hiekkarannoista, uneliaista ­pikkukylistä ja loikoilusta palmun alla.

Vajaan parinsadantuhannen asukkaan valtiolla on kaksi pääsaarta, Upolu ja Savai’i. Upolulla sijaitsee leppoisa pääkaupunki Apia, pieni kan­ sainvälinen lentokenttä ja pisimmät hiekkaran­ nat. Kooltaan suuremman ja harvempaan asutun Savai’in maisemia hallitsevat tulivuoret, mustien laavamuodostelmien välistä taivaisiin nousevat kookospalmut sekä kapeat tiet, joilla väkeä liik­ kuu vain vähän.

Lähes joka kylästä löytyy matkailijoille ranta­ majoja eli faleja, jotka ovat paras tapa päästä sisään polynesialaiseen tunnelmaan. Sellaisessa minäkin nyt asun perheineni. Savai’in saaren luoteisnurkassa sijaitseva Va-i-Moanan maja­ paikka on rakennettu aivan meren rannalle.

Naapurifalessa asuvat maailmanympäri­matkaa tekevät reppureissaajakaverukset. Seuraavassa mökissä lomailee australialainen eläkeläisparis­ kunta, joka on tullut hakemaan Samoalta hiljai­ suutta ja aurinkoa.

Matkailu on Samoan kolmanneksi tärkein tulonlähde, kehitysavun ja ulkomailla asuvien samoalaisten kotiin lähettämien rahojen jälkeen.

Matkailu on silti pienimuotoista. Suuria hotelli­ alueita ei ole, missään ei pärise vesiskootteri. ”Me olemme kiitollisia jokaisesta tänne ­tulevasta matkailijasta”, sanoo Va-i-Moanan ravintolassa tarjoilijana työskentelevä pari­ kymppinen Faalilo Meksala.

Falemajat ovat budjettimatkailijan onni: muutamalla kympillä merinäköala, tehokas ilmanvaihto ja usein myös maukkaat ateriat.

Naapurimajassa asuvat kaverukset,

jotka ovat reppureissulla maailman ympäri.

Seuraavassa mökissä lomailee aurinkoa ja hiljaisuutta etsivä australialaispari.

”Opiskelin opettajaksi pääkaupunki Api­ assa, mutta palasin työskentelemään tänne koti­ kylääni turismin pariin. Tässä työssä kuulee tari­ noita ulkomailta ja oppii puhumaan paremmin ­englantia”, Meksala kertoo.

Hedelmiä nautitaan saarilla monin tavoin.

Kalastajat hakevat saalista myös öisin, ja surffaajatkin viihtyvät vesillä hämärään asti.

MATKUSTAMINEN SAMOALLA ON kalliimpaa kuin esimerkiksi Aasiassa mutta selkeästi edulli­ sempaa kuin vaikka Fidžin suosituissa turisti­ kohteissa. Falemajoitus maksaa varustelutasosta riippuen 20–50 euroa yöltä, ja siihen sisäl­ tyy yleensä täysihoito. Ateriat ovat paikalliseen tapaan yksinkertaisia ja todella suuria.

Illalliseksi on riisiä, juureksia ja joko kalaa tai kanaa. Aamiaisella nautitaan vaikkapa pannu­ kakkuja, munkkeja sekä kookosmaidossa ja kaa­ kaossa kypsäksi keitettyä riisiä.

Ruoka-annosten kokoa ei täällä pidä kauhis­ tella, sillä Samoalla arvostetaan ennen kaikkea isoa vatsaa. Siksi aamiaisellakin on ihan luonnol­ lista syödä vaikka kolme uppopaistettua banaani­ munkkia. Lihavuus kertoo samoalaisille hyvin­ voinnista. ”Mitä pulleampi, sitä parempi”, vahvistaa annoksia pöytään kantava Meksala.

Laiheliinit olisivat tuskin näitä saaria edes ­löytäneet. Ensimmäiset asukkaat saapui­ vat Samoalle Kaakkois-Aasiasta noin kolme tuhatta vuotta sitten. Raskaan purjehdusmat­ kan ­tehneiltä tulokkailta vaadittiin kovaa fyysistä kuntoa ja riskiä olemusta.

Vuonna 1899 Samoa joutui Saksan vallan alle.

Ensimmäisen maailmansodan myllerryksessä saksalaisten hallitsijoiden tilalle tulivat uusi­ seelantilaiset. Samoa itsenäistyi 1960-luvulla.

Maa on hyvin uskonnollinen, mikä johtuu ­paljolti 1800-luvun lopulla alkaneesta lähetys­ saarnaajien virrasta. Samoalla onkin nykyään useita kristillisiä kirkkoja. Monia poliittisia lin­ jauksia – kuten homoseksuaalisuuden kieltävää lakia – perustellaan täällä uskonnollisista lähtö­ kohdista. Lähetyssaarnaajien saapuminen on vai­ kuttanut alkuperäiskulttuuriin, esimerkiksi niin, että joitakin perinnetapoja on hylätty. Yhdessä asiassa paikalliset eivät ole taipuneet saarnamies­ ten ohjeisiin: samoalaismiesten keskivartaloon tehdyt tatuoinnit, joita kutsutaan sanalla pe’a. ”Pe’a on hyvin tärkeä osa identiteettiämme.

Emme suostuneet luopumaan siitä, vaikka ­lähetyssaarnaajat pitivät tapaa pakanallisena”, kertoo pääkaupunki Apiassa tapaamamme ­Toleakoa Chris Solomona.

Hän esittelee meille polvista keskivartaloon asti ulottuvaa tatuointiaan. ”Olen aina ihaillut vaikutusvaltaista isoisääni.

Kun ilmoitin hänelle 13-vuotiaana, että haluai­ sin samanlaisen tatuoinnin kuin hänellä, isoisäni miltei raivostui. Hän teki selväksi, että tatuointia ei oteta, vaan se ansaitaan.”

Tatuoinnin saa mies, jonka katsotaan pysty­ vän elättämään perheensä, tukemaan sukuaan ja tekemään hyvää yhteiskunnalle. Samoalla on kaksi perhettä, jotka ovat tatuointien mestareita.

Sua- ja Tolouena-perheiden päälliköt päättävät, millainen tatuointi kenellekin tehdään. Muste hakataan ihoon kivillä. Tatuoinnin tekeminen kestää viikkoja, eikä puudutusaineita käytetä. ”Kesken jäänyt tatuointi on suurin häpeä, mitä samoalaiselle perheelle voi tapahtua. Osa

To Sua Trenchin meriveden täyttämä luola on Samoan suosituin luonnonnähtävyys.

Päivien lämpö ja luonnon kauneus houkuttelevat rauhoittumaan. Mitään erikoista ei tapahdu, ja se onkin tarkoitus: tätä oleilua voisi jatkaa vaikka kuinka kauan.

SEURAAVAN TUNNIN SISÄÄN bussin pitäisi tulla.

Seisomme tienvarressa Savai’in saarella. Aika­ taulut ovat Samoalla suuntaa antavia, joten kyy­ tiä voi joutua vartomaan pidemmänkin aikaa.

Kun Bob Marleyn kasvokuvalla koristeltu bussi vihdoin kaartaa paikalle, huokaamme vähän pet­ tyneinä: se onkin jo täynnä. Kuski on kuitenkin eri mieltä asiasta ja viittoo meidät sisään. Seuraa sekasorto, joka paikallisten silmissä on kuiten­ kin aivan arkista bussielämää. Lapsia nostellaan penkkirivien ylitse. Pari tyttöä tekee pahvilaati­ koista penkit käytävälle, yksi isokokoinen nainen siirtyy bussin etuosaan.

Meille osoitetaan istumapaikat, kuski avaa ­stereot ja heittää rinkkamme viereensä. Bussi nytkähtää liikkeelle – ja pysähtyy parin sadan metrin päässä ottamaan lisää matkustajia. Taas järjestellään. Samoalaisbussissa on aina tilaa.

Kuljettajan apupoika kaivaa penkin alta laa­ tikollisen donitseja ja ryhtyy myyntihommiin.

Otan mallia edessä istuvilta ja ostan itselleni neljä. Mutustelen kermatäytteistä munkkia ja ­katselen avoimista bussinikkunoista vehreitä maisemia. Kaiuttimissa pauhaa Beyoncé.

Kiertelemme bussikyydillä Savai’in ranta­ kylästä toiseen yli viikon. Satamakylä Sale­lo­ logasta saamme lauttakyydin Upolun puolelle.

Siellä kierrämme vielä toiset kymmenen ­päivää.

Värikkäät bussit kulkevat saarten pääteitä maa­ nantaista lauantaihin, varhaisaamusta ilta­ päivään. Osa Upolun rantakylistä tuhoutui vuo­ den 2009 suuressa tsunamissa, mutta paikalliset ovat saaneet rakennettua talojaan takaisin ja niin arki kuin matkailu on palannut raiteilleen.

Näiden saarten rannoilla on usein hyvä snork­ lata tai surffata. Sukeltajille nämä vedet eivät ole huippukohde, eikä sukelluspalvelujakaan ole paljon. Mutta päivien lämpö ja luonnon kauneus houkuttelevatkin rauhoittumaan paikoilleen.

Mitään kovin ­erikoista ei tapahdu, ja se on tarkoi­ tus: tätä oleilua voisi jatkaa vaikka kuinka kauan.

Vuokraamme falemajan, jonka mukavuuksiin kuuluu lähinnä patja lattialla. Illalla laskemme

palmunlehdistä punotut verhot tuulensuojaksi yösijamme ympärille.

UPOLULLA KESKEINEN määränpäämme on saaren eteläosassa, Samoan kehutuin ranta Lalomanua.

Perillä henkäisen ihastuksesta.

Yli kilometrin mittaisella vaalealla rannalla on rivissä värikkäitä falemajoja. Siellä täällä kor­ keat kookospalmut kaartuvat rantaviivan yli ­turkoosinsiniselle merelle. Rannan tuntumassa pari koiraa venyttelee auringossa.

Vuokraamme jälleen kerran falen, jonka muka­ vuuksiin kuuluu vain patja lattialla. Majat raken­ netaan noin puolen metrin korkeuteen maasta, eli niihin harvemmin eksyy tropiikin ötököitä.

Avaan kirjan. Lapsi alkaa järjestellä mukana kantamaansa simpukankuorikokoelmaa. Nousu­ veden aikaan meri tulee niin lähelle, että patjalta voisi halutessaan kierähtää mereen uimaan.

Illalla laskemme palmunlehdistä punotut ­verhot tuulensuojaksi majamme ympärille ja asettelemme moskiittoverkon suojaksemme.

Ennen nukahtamista kuulen, kuinka ranta­ palmusta putoaa kookospähkinä loiskahtaen mereen. Ajattelen, että juuri tänne tulen vielä ­joskus uudestaan. m

VINKIT & HINNAT

RAUHALLINEN JA RENTO SAMOA

MATKA JA BUDJETTI

Suomesta pääsee Samoalle lentämällä ensin Australiaan tai Uuteen-Seelantiin. Moni tekee Samoasta etapin maailmanympärimatkalleen, sillä muuten menopaluu Suomesta Samoalle maksaa noin 2 300 e. Liikkumiseen, fale­majoi­tuksiin ja ruokiin kuluu viikossa 350–400 e/hlö, ja todella säästeliäs voi päästä sen allekin.

LIIKKUMINEN

Vuokra-auto on hyvä tapa kiertää saaria itsenäisesti. Auton voi kuljettaa Upolun ja Savai’in välillä lautalla. Vuokraamoja löytyy Apian keskustasta (esimerkiksi Samoana Rental Cars) tai isoista hotelleista.

Hinta alkaen 25 e/vrk.

RUOKA

Majoituspaikkojen ulkopuolella ei juuri ole ravintoloita. Hienoimmissa hotelleissa tarjoillaan länsimaista ruokaa, mutta kannattaa ehdottomasti tutustua paikallisiin herkkuihin, joita saa majataloissa.

Kookoskermatäytteisiä palusamikasvisnyyttejä, samoalaisten ”perunaa” eli taarajuuresta sekä leipäpuun hedelmää saa ainakin sunnuntaisin umu-lounaalla. Suosituimmat hedelmät ovat papaija, ananas ja kookos.

YÖVY NÄISSÄ

Korkeatasoisimmissa hotelleissa on uima-altaat, hyvä hiekkaranta ja länsimaiset ravintolat. Upolun saarella tarjolla ovat vaikkapa nämä kolme: tyylikäs ja häämatkalaisten suosima Aggie Grey’s Lagoon Beach sijaitsee ­lentokentän lähellä, liikematkailijoiden ja vanhempien pariskuntien Tanoa Tusitala aivan Apian keskustassa sekä surffaajien unelma, luksusrantamökkikohde Coconut Beach Club saaren

Bussit ovat hidas mutta mukava elämys.

rauhallisella etelärannikolla. 2 hh alkaen 200 e.

Falemajoista hyväksi koettuja paikkoja Savai’in saarella ovat Joelan Beach Fale (20 e/hlö, sisältää ateriat) ja Va-i-Moanan syrjäinen mutta kaunis bungalow-kylä Asaun kupeessa (2 hh 70 e, sisältää aamiaisen ja illallisen). Upolun paras fale löytyy Lalomanun rannalta: Taufua Beach Falen hinta aterioineen on noin 30 e/hlö.

Eksotiikan etsijä voi yöpyä puussa: Lupe Sina Treesortilla on vierashuoneet kahdessa vahvarunkoisessa puussa (2 hh alkaen 200 e, sisältää aamiaisen).

NÄE JA KOE

Meriveden täyttämä avoin luola To Sua Trench Upolun etelärannalla on listattu usein maailman hienoimpien uimapaikkojen joukkoon.

Pulahdus vaatii ensin aimo laskeutumisen kapeilla tikapuilla.

Keuhkosairas skotlantilainen kirjailija Robert Louis Stevenson muutti Samoalle kostean ilmaston perässä. Edesmenneen kirjailijan huvila on Samoan suosituin (ja ainoa varteenotettava) museo.

Apian ja Salelologan markkinat ovat mainioita paikkoja ostaa samoalaisia käsitöitä, kuten perinteisiä kankaita tai mulperipuun oksista valmistettuun kankaaseen painettuja maalauksia.

Matkailijoille suunnattu Samoa Cultural Village Apiassa on hyvä keskus tutustua kulttuuriin, kuten kankaanpainantaan, tansseihin, umu-ruokiin ja tatuointeihin.

Familie spielt in den traditionellen Südsee-Ländern immer noch eine große Rolle. Das gilt vor allem für Inseln, die noch nicht vom Massentourismus überrollt wurden (und das sind ja noch ziemlich viele). Wer die Südsee bereist, sollte versuchen, auf die Menschen dort zuzugehen. Das ist das größte und schönste Erlebnis überhaupt. Dieses kleine Bildchen ,das ich mit Hilfe meiner samoanischen ‘Schwester’ machen konnte, wäre ohne ihre wertvolle Mithilfe nicht möglich gewesen, denn es ist unhöflich, wenn man einfach – ohne eingeladen zu sein – den Garten von Fremden besucht. Wir sind zu diesem alten Mann gefahren, der gerade mit seinem Enkel ein Mittagsschläfchen in dem nach allen Seiten offenen Haus gehalten hat, und sie hat ihn für ihren Artikel befragt. Ich durfte Bilder machen. Dabei enstand eine FotoSerie, die ich bis dato noch nie publiziert habe. Es gibt sehr intime Einblicke in den ‘Fa’a Samoa’ – den samoanischen Lebensstil. Ein Grund, warum ich die 4 Wochen in Samoa so liebte war, dass die Menschen einem das Leben so leicht machen, weil ihre Grundhaltung einfach positiver ist, als in vielen anderen Ländern dieser Welt. Genau das, macht auch diese Bilder so interessant. Vieelicht gibt es ja doch noch Mal ein Buch darüber…..mal schauen.

Neben den liebenswürdigen Menschen in Samoa, ist dieses Land aber auch landschaftlich sehr reizvoll. Es gibt also keinen einzigen Grund, nicht nach Samoa zu fliegen………

This natural swimming pool on a volcanic Samoan island offers visitors the ultimate experience in relaxation.

To Sua Ocean Trench, which literally translates as 'big hole,' is located in Lotofaga village, on the south coast of Upolu island in Samoa. When the volcanoes erupted on the island, much of the ground fell away, and this 98-foot deep hole was the result.

Steps lead down to a ladder, which tourists can use to descend into the grotto, or use as an impromptu diving board (providing the water levels are high enough).

For those less brave, a tumble in from a board a matter of inches above the water may be the safer option.

The green landscape is matched by crystal clear waters, an abundance of tropical fish and a sandy bed. A series of canals leading from the pool to the

South Pacific Ocean ensure the hole is never dried out.

In order to protect the serene spot, as well as maintain the safety of the visitor routes into the water, there is a charge to swim. It will cost adults £10 ($15), children £3.85 ($6.00), but is free to those under the age of seven.

Writing on TripAdvisor, Georgie P from Brisbane, Australia says: 'To Sua is one of the most unique, relaxing places I have been to. When I went there was only one other couple there so it was very peaceful.

Craig02128 adds: 'A magical experience, swimming at the bottom of the grotto. If you are a strong swimmer, you can even swim underneath the rock tunnel and out to the ocean.

'We visited the trench in May and absolutely loved it, the place is so beautiful and the water is warm and clear. Recommend visiting this paradise on earth,' writes Andrea R.

Visitors to the trench are warned to take care when walking down the ladder, as expectedly, it can become slippery.

The review website has scored To Sua Ocean Trench a four-and-a-half rating out of five based on visitors' reviews. Of the 401 people to have commented on the tourist attraction, 319 have rated it as 'excellent.'

s soon as I step off the plane my senses fly into overdrive. The warm air is heavy with the sweet scent of tropical flowers and coconuts and thick, lush greenery seems to be bursting from every corner and crevice. My weary body begins to relax in the warmth and I can hear the faint sound of rhythmic drum beats and singing.

It soon becomes clear where the music is coming from. There's a band in the small baggage collection area, belting out traditional Samoan choruses with gusto. Dawn has only just broken but every single member is grinning from ear to ear and bursting with energy.

Their energy seems infectious as almost instantly the memory of the long flights and sleepless nights begins to fade. It's the perfect welcome after travelling halfway around the world, and they've even managed to make arriving in an airport fun. I can't wait to uncover more of the treasures of this tropical paradise.

TRADITIONAL LIFESTYLE

Asmall cluster of islands in the heart of the South Pacific, Samoa is one of the few places where you can still have an authentic Polynesian experience.

Fa'a Samoa (The Samoan Way) is a 3,000 year old way of life celebrating and embracing traditional values, Samoan culture and the environment.

Even today, it is still at the heart of the island's communities, and is something that the Samoans, with their warm, welcoming nature, are eager to share with visitors.

According to Fa'a Samoa, a marriage is a sacred union to be honoured and expected, so you can be assured that everyone involved in your wedding will be taking your vows as seriously as you. Due to this dedication, a truly special and memorable experience is ensured.

COCONUTS BEACH RESORT

If you are hoping for a truly unique experience then head to Coconuts Beach Resort. They offer a range of wedding packages including 'The Samoan Experience' which allows the couple to immerse themselves in Samoan culture.

The bride and groom are each 'adopted' by two separate Samoan families, and treated as if they are one of their own relatives. The bride will be fully dressed in a traditional style while the groom will have his own lava-lava (sarong) sewn for him, accompanied by a shell ula (lei).

singing of traditional songs. After brief speeches by the Tulafale (talking chiefs representing each family), the Coconuts String Band plays softly in the background, while the village reverend performs the ceremony, on the golden sands under an archway of tropical flowers.

After the ceremony, a Samoan-style reception follows, with the presentation of traditional gifts between the families for the bride and groom, a fiafia (performance of Samoan song and dance), dinner, a cake and a bottle of champagne.

There's no doubt that the palm-fringed beaches are some of Samoa's biggest draws but there's more to discover if you can tear you rsel f away. The lush, colourful landscapes are just as beautiful, and if you get too hot there's an abundance of pools and waterfalls where you can take a refreshing dip. The most dramatic of these, and my personal favourite, is the To Sua Trench.

Literally translated as a giant swimming hole, there's a ladder installed for visitors to access the 30-metre-deep cave pool. While the descent might be slightly heart-stopping at times, the plunge into the cool, crystal clear water is more than worth it.

After the ceremony you can celebrate in the waterfront restaurant enjoying the freshest of seafood prepared by Seabreeze's award-winning chef. Later you can retreat to the Honeymoon Point House. RETURN TO PARADISE One of Samoa's newest resorts is Return to Paradise. Stretching across more than a kilometre of dramatic coastline, including private beaches and platforms which reach overthe ocean, it offers a range of possibilities while still maintaining a more boutique feel. And while Return to Paradise might have opened less than 12 months ago, the story begins back in the 1950s. The Return to Paradise Beach takes its name from the movie made there starring Gary Cooper and Roberta Haynes back in 1954. This was a ground breaking film because, apart from the four major parts, all the other speaking parts went to local Samoans, all of whom had no movie acting experience.

The success of the film made the beach an icon of Samoa and it was deemed to be so valuable, that the traditional landowning families divided the beach in such a way to ensure that it could be preserved forever. Over the years many businesses and hotel chains tried to buy the beach to turn it into a resort but the village chiefs believed it was their responsibility to ensure the beach would be protected and used only in ways that supported their values.

CULTURAL IMMERSION Samoa is a country that is rich in history and heritage, something that the locals are keen to share. The cultural village in Apia (the capital) offers an insight into the country's traditions including arts and crafts, food and drink and the fascinating art of tattooing.

While in Apia, make like a local and visit some of the markets. A meander through the fresh produce market is a feast for the senses. For around 80 pence you can buy a cool fresh coconut and drink the juice as you wander between the tables laden with brightly coloured fruits and vegetables - some familiar, other less so. There's no hard sell from the stall holders and those that speak Engl ish are happy to talk to you about their wares, while those that don't will smile and pose for pictures.

Religion is an important part of life in Samoa, and on Sundays almost everywhere outside the hotels and resorts will be closed as most people will attend at least one church service a day.

Many of the resorts can arrange for guests to attend a service at a nearby church, which is a wonderful experience, even if you're not religious. The term 'Sunday best' is taken very seriously, with everyone dressing in pristine white outfits and the women sporting elaborate hats. It's a beautiful sight and coupled with the enthusiastic singing it's very uplifting, even if you don't understand the words.

And that sense of joy is the thing I remember most about Samoa. Whether it was the sound of the hymns filling the church or the sight of the children happily waving as we drove past.

Whether it was the feeling of freedom as I floated in the sea at sunset, there was always something to bring a smile to my face. And as I remember it, I'm smiling again now. â&#x20AC;˘
