Pot Luck

Garden View This month - Tulips IF I could grow only one type of flower then it would have to be the tulip. Harbingers of warmer days the choice available is mind-blowing. There are frilly parrot tulips bearing fringed petals, sturdy fat-flowered types and graceful plants with lily-like blooms. They are also tremendously accommodating. You can plant them much later than daffodils and narcissi because they don’t need to start producing roots so early. In fact you can plant them from now until Christmas! My mother uses them as annuals and rips them up after flowering but I can’t bear to do that so I plant them deeply and leave them in the garden where they return happily year on year. If you want to use them as disposable bedding you only need to plant them about 10cm / 4 inches deep. If, like me, you treat them as old friends then plant them 23cm / 9 inches deep and they won’t disappoint you.

TULIPS are wonderful value in containers. As a guide, a 2530cm / 10-12 inch diameter pot will accommodate a dozen bulbs. For a larger 47.5cm / 19inch pot use 16 –18 bulbs. Cover the base with at least 5cm / 2inches of drainage material and 12cm / 5 inches of soil-less multi-purpose compost. Lay the bulbs in an inner and outer circle making sure that no bulb touches either another, or the outside of the pot. Fill the pot with compost to within 2.5cm / 1 inch of the rim. I finish pots off with strips of daisies or anemones planted around the edge in colours which complement the tulips. Water everything in but shelter the pot from heavy rain so it doesn’t become waterlogged and never water in frosty weather. I use water-retaining granules mixed in with the compost. These help to maintain soil moisture throughout the dormant season. Feed the daisies or anemones throughout their flowering season in the Autumn and the Spring and you should be rewarded with a beautiful display sometime in April or May. I love to plant containers of tulips by my front door. I have a red door so choose something like Tulipa ‘Apeldoorn’ in yellow and red varieties underplanted with red daisies. If you have a blue or green door you might light to try Tulipa ‘Angelique’ (pale pink) underplanted with pink anemones. Or how about Tulipa ‘Bleu Aimable’ a brilliant purple/blue variety?

A Peek into the Past

A Good Read

October 1977 - Invasion of the twins ON October 7th 1977 ninety sets of Swedish identical twins travelled to Felixstowe for a brief shopping trip.

Scientists were investigating links between the environment and human behaviour.

The twins were taking part in studies by researchers from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm.

As the twins disembarked from their ship, the Tor Scandinavia, each pair was dressed in matching outfits but the study hoped that they’d find something different to wear when they spent their money in the local shops and boutiques.

encounter with McCall Smith’s fellow Edinburgh author Ian Rankin, appearing in an intriguing cameo role. As ever, there are twists and turns along the way for all, and the ending leaves numerous possibilities. Like all good serials, this one gives the impression that the characters continue to live, love and exist even when we are not looking – and for that reason, it will undoubtedly continue to be as popular as ever.

The idea for the ‘twins cruise’ came from ship's captain, Sune Dahlström, himself a twin. He said he was inspired by an encounter a few years previously with two identical twin sisters riding identical twin horses. All the twins were aged between 11 and 80 and were recruited from all parts of Sweden. The project was the largest of its kind and was conducted through the Swedish twins registry, which remains one of the most comprehensive resources for clinical, epidemiological and genetic studies.

HOW does Alexander McCall Smith do it? To produce one bestselling series of books - The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency - is impressive enough, but to add two more – The Sunday Philosophy Club series and the 44 Scotland Street novels – is nothing short of amazing. And they just keep on coming. The Unbearable Lightness of Scones is the latest in the 44 Scotland Street series (although by the time this review is published there’s every chance that it won’t be, given the speed at which McCall Smith seems to produce his work!). As ever, it follows the various adventures of a group of Edinburgh residents, all of whom are connected with the titular address. This time, the action moves as far afield as Australia, although much of the story is set in the small world of Edinburgh: in fact, the city is probably the most important ‘character’ in the whole series. Each of the protagonists has their own concerns, from the dramatic Matthew’s bizarre near-death experience on his honeymoon - to the mundane - Angus Lordie’s liberation of a blue Spode teacup!

The Unbearable Lightness of Scones – Alexander McCall Smith

One of the delights of the series is the assortment of individuals who populate it. Poor Bertie, the favourite of many readers, continues to struggle against the twin oppressive regimes of his mother Irene and his ‘girlfriend’ Olive, and thinks that the Cub Scouts may offer a way out – a move which leads to a chance

Skellig – David Almond PUBLISHED in 1998, this unforgettable book achieved instant cult status and is now rightly recognised as a children’s classic. It is often taught in junior and secondary schools, but if you really want your child to live out the magic it offers, catch them early so they can read uninterrupted and absorbed. The story itself is simple. Shortly after the birth of his baby sister, and while her health hangs in the balance, Michael finds Skellig in the garage of the ramshackle old house that he and his parents have just moved into. But who – or what – is he? Slowly Michael begins to find out: with gifts of aspirin, beer, cod liver oil and Chinese takeaway, he discovers a friend. Almond’s prose is beautifully understated, and straightforward enough to capture the interest of the reader before leading into passages of lyrical and emotional intensity. Death is ever present, and dealt with sensitively enough for young readers to understand and relate to, whilst the message is all about life, and love, and hope. If you haven’t read it, buy it now.

Professor Panini By Matthew Grigg BEFORE my many years' service in a restaurant, I attended a top science university. The year was 2023 and I was finishing the project that would win me my professorship. In the end, it resulted in my becoming a kitchen employee. My forty-second birthday had made a lonely visit the week before, and I was once again by myself in the flat. Like countless other mornings, I ordered a bagel from the toaster. 'Yes, sir!' it replied with robotic relish, and I began the day's work on the project. It was a magnificent machine, the thing I was making capable of transferring the minds of any two beings into each other's bodies. As the toaster began serving my bagel on to a plate, I realised the project was in fact ready for testing. I retrieved the duck and the cat - which I had bought for this purpose ñ from their containers, and set about calibrating the machine in their direction. Once ready, I leant against the table, holding the bagel I was too excited to eat, and initiated the transfer sequence. As expected, the machine whirred and hummed into action, my nerves tingling at its synthetic sounds. The machine hushed, extraction and injection nozzles poised, scrutinizing its targets. The cat, though, was suddenly gripped by terrible alarm. The brute leapt into the air, flinging itself onto the machine. I watched in horror as the nozzles swung towards me; and, with a terrible, psychedelic whirl of colours, felt my mind wrenched from its sockets. When I awoke, moments later, I noticed first that I was two feet shorter. Then, I realised the lack of my limbs, and finally it occurred to me that I was a toaster. I saw immediately the solution to the situation - the machine could easily reverse the transfer - but was then struck by my utter inability to carry this out. After some consideration, using what I supposed must be the toaster's onboard computer; I devised a strategy for rescue. I began to familiarise myself with my new body: the grill, the bread bin, the speaker and the spring mechanism. Through the device's rudimentary eye - with which it served its creations - I could see the internal telephone on the wall. Aiming carefully, I began propelling slices of bread at it. The toaster was fed by a large stock of the stuff, yet as more and more bounced lamely off the phone, I began to fear its exhaustion. * Toasting the bread before launch proved a wiser tac-

tic. A slice of crusty wholemeal knocked the receiver off its cradle, and the immovable voice of the reception clerk answered. Resisting the urge to exclaim my unlikely predicament, I called from the table: 'I'm having a bit of trouble up here, Room 91. Could you lend a hand?' 'Certainly, sir. There's a burst water pipe on the floor above, I suppose I'll kill two birds with one stone and sort you out on the way,' The clerk arrived promptly, leaving his 'caution, wet floor' sign in the corridor. He came in, surveying the room in his usual dry, disapproving fashion. I spoke immediately, saying I was on the intercom, and requested that he simply press the large button on the machine before him. 'This one, sir?' he asked, and before I could correct him, the room was filled with a terrible, whirling light, and he fell to the ground. A minute later he stood up again, uncertainly, and began moving in a manner that can only be described as a waddle. The duck, meanwhile, was scrutinising the flat with an air of wearied distaste. I gazed at the scene with dismay. Suddenly an idea struck the clerk, and with avian glee he tottered towards the window. I spluttered a horrified warning to no avail. He leapt triumphantly from the balcony, spread his 'wings' and disappeared. I would have wept, but managed only to eject a few crumbs. * Hours of melancholy calculation and terrible guilt gave no progress, and left me with a woeful regret for the day's events. Determined not to give up hope, I began to burn clumsy messages into slices of bread, and slung these desperate distress calls through the window. I sought not only my own salvation, but also to account for the bizarre demise of the clerk, who must no doubt have been discovered on the street below. I soon found my bread bin to be empty, and sank again into a morose meditation. A large movement shocked me from my morbid contemplation. Before me, having clambered up from the floor, stood my own body. It regarded me with dim cheer. 'I have been upgraded,' it announced in monotone. The room was silent as I struggled to cope with this information. Then: 'Would you like some toast?' The truth dawned on me, and I wasted no time in

seeing the utility of this revelation. I informed the toaster, which was now in control of my body, that I wished it to fetch help. It regarded me warily, then asked if I would like that buttered. Maintaining patience, I explained the instruction more thoroughly. I watched with surreal anticipation as my body of forty-two years jerked its way out of the flat. It rounded the corner, and there was a hope-dashing crash. It had tripped up on the 'caution: wet floor' sign. To my joyous relief, however, I heard the thing continue on its way down the corridor. Minutes passed, then hours. I entertained myself flicking wheat-based projectiles at the cat. On the dawn of the third day, I concluded that the toaster had failed in its piloting of my body, and that help was not on its way. Gripped by the despair of one who must solve the puzzle of toaster suicide, I resigned myself to my fate. Pushed on by a grim fervour, I began igniting the entire stock of bread. As the smoke poured from my casing, and the first hints of deadly flame flickered in my mechanisms, I began the solemn disclosure of my own eulogy. Suddenly the fire alarm leapt into action, hurling thick jets of water across the flat, desperate to save its occupants. A piercing wail erupted from all sides, and a squabbling mixture of annoyance, relief and curiosity filtered into my mind. * Once the firemen had visited and deactivated the alarm, I was identified as the fault, unplugged and hauled away to a repair shop. The staff there, finding nothing to remove but a faulty speech chip, apparently put me up for sale. I only know this because, on being reconnected to the mains, I found myself in a shiny, spacious kitchen. Missing my electronic voice, I could only listen to the conversation of the staff, discussing the odd conduct of their new cook. The end of their hurried discussion heralded his arrival. I gazed at the door in silent surrender, as my body stepped proudly on to the premises, displaying its newly designed menu. At the top of the list I could discern 'Buttered bagel'.

Our suggestion is a Pumpkin Party! This year Halloween falls on a Saturday which is perfect. First send out invitations. Get the children to cut pumpkin shapes out of orange card or bat shapes out of black card and write your own. Make sure everyone knows that its BYOP (bring your own pumpkins) unless you own a pumpkin farm or have recently won the lottery! Mention that there will be certificates and prizes. Pumpkin decorating is messy business. If it’s a nice day the party can be held outside but in our unpredictable British climate it might be a good idea to have an alternative available. A garage is great. Push everything against the walls (if there’s too much then it’s time for a clear out anyway!) and use dust sheets to cover up what you can’t clear out. A cheap marquee (available from garden centres and DIY stores) to extend the party area is also a good idea. Set up picnic tables or folding tables, covered in cheap table cloths or newspaper, for the artists to work on. This makes clearing up the goo much easier. Also put big rolls of kitchen paper on each table so that people can wipe their hands. Think creative. Put out lots of childfriendly pumpkin saws, ice cream scoops etc. and bowls labelled ‘goo’ and ‘seeds’ (kids love to roast the seeds).

! #$%& '( 3(8 9+& ,: 3(8 .*(-- %

Carving is fun but to encourage even more creativity put out some pre-cut veggies: broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, small gourds etc. plus some cocktail sticks to act as fasteners. Carrots make good noses and chunks of broccoli make great hair. See what people come up with. Have two or three judges. Get them each to wear a special judges hat and treat the occasion with great ceremony...it adds to the fun. Have plenty of categories (scariest, silliest, most creative etc.) and make sure everyone gets a little bag of goodies and a certificate. Have an overall prize for the best pumpkin (split it into adults and children if there are enough contestants). Finally, light all the lanterns and take a photo for posterity. Send everyone a copy and you can bet they will be clamouring for an invite to next-year’s event!

Finishing Touches Food needs to be easy to eat. Try a big pot of chilli served in paper bowls with tortilla chips. Or crank up the barbecue and serve loads of hot dogs. As the evening becomes colder hot chocolate goes down well. For decorations try polystyrene tombstones, scary veg lanterns (a row of green peppers looks very effective). Hang paper bats from the ceiling. If you’re a dab hand at face painting (or even if you’re not) set up a facepainting corner for gruesome creations.

Fact or Fib One statement is false, the others are true. Which is the false one? 1. The electric chair was invented by a dentist. 2. The word ‘Spain’ means ‘Land of the rabbits.’ 3. An octopus has three hearts. 4. An owl can rotate its head 360 degrees. 5. Only two English words end in ‘gry’ - hungry and angry. Answer 4 is false. An owl can only rotate its head 270 degrees...still impressive though!

Halloween is a great excuse to host a party for family and friends. It can be tricky though, especially if you have a wide age range to cater for. It has to be not too scary for littlies but not too tame for teens and adults.

vehicles before they see them? Are they big or small, fast or slow?

On Sunday 25th October the clocks go back and it becomes even more important that children are visible and safe.

With very small children assess how good they are at judging distance. Is the red car further or near than the blue one?

It’s up to us therefore, as parents, to do everything we can to teach them the skills they need. The best place to start is with ourselves. It’s a case of ‘Do as I do.’ Up to three quarters of parents don’t use a zebra crossing or pelican crossing even when one is available. Our children copy us so let them copy our good road sense.

Why should they walk straight across and not dawdle or wander off at an angle?

Make sure they’re visible. Reflective strips, badges and tags are cheap to buy and can be used to customise clothing and school bags. Lighter-coloured outer garments are better even though they get dirty more quickly. Better a grubby child than a dead one. Start young. It’s never too early to start discussing road safety. Whenever you’re walking with them, around town, to the shops or to school start a discussion. Ask them to point out roads, footpaths, grass verges, kerbs. Get them to point out where pedestrians and vehicles may have shared access and ask them where it’s safe to walk or stand. Ask them why they need to stop before crossing. Where should they stop and wait...and why? Get them to point out from what direction vehicles might approach. Can they hear

18

When you’re crossing a road ask them to identify the safest place to cross and to tell you why they chose it. Talk about crossings, including lollipop ladies and get them tell you why it’s important they still stop, look and listen when using them. Sometimes in the real world children have to cross in less than ideal places e.g. between parked cars on busy streets. Discuss the best way to handle this. Help them learn to plan safe routes and explain why these may not always be the shortest routes. Discuss different types of weather and the effect it can have on vehicle drivers and pedestrians. If they ride a bike, insist on a helmet and better still, enrol them on a cycling proficiency course. Keep talking. Even cool teenagers need reminding about road safety, no matter how much they protest. Just tell yourself they’ll thank you when they grow up...safely.

The most pressing question about the car of the future is ‘What fuel will it use?’ Governments across Europe are under pressure to meet new environmental targets so they want the car industry to develop greener cars. Part of the problem has been our reliance on fossil fuels, so what sort of options are available to the motorist in 2009? Petrol Still the most popular fuel with motorists across the UK. Engines tend to be quiet, responsive and cheaper to buy and repair than other types. Unfortunately petrol engines burn a non-renewable energy resource and emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Not all petrol engines are created equal though. Greener cars tend to be smaller models with better fuel consumption and lower emissions than their big brothers. Diesel Purchases of diesel cars have soared recently. More efficient than petrol, they also produce lower CO2 emissions. But they do produce other noxious compounds such as particulate matter and nitrous oxides. On the whole though they are less polluting and cheaper to run if you drive more than 10000 miles per year. LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) Made of propane and butane LPG has better green credentials than either petrol or diesel. It is also much cheaper though this has to be balanced against the fact that it is less efficient so you'll need to fill up more frequently. Even allowing for this an LPG vehicle is much cheaper to run than one which runs on petrol or diesel alone.

switch on the dashboard. Conversion needs to be carried out by a qualified professional. Failure to do this could compromise your insurance cover. Electric cars Electricity is one of the oldest green concepts around and dates back to the 1800s! Electric cars produce no emissions but of course there is the indirect environmental impact of charging. They take a long time to charge and have a limited driving range and poorer performance than any other type of car. Hybrid cars These are becoming ever more popular after a slow start. In fact Toyota have had difficulty keeping up with demand for their Prius model. Hybrids are a combination of two power sources, generally petrol or diesel and electric. The petrol/diesel engine powers the car at high speeds e.g. on motorways, while the car can be switched to battery power for slower city driving. As no emissions are produced when using electric power the hybrid is much cleaner and greener than normal petrol or diesel cars. The other beauty of this system is that the battery is recharged by the internal combustion engine or from kinetic energy absorbed when braking.

Most petrol engines can be converted easily to run on LPG and this then allows the car to run on either fuel simply by flicking a

Look to the Future The car industry is becoming excited about Hydrogen fuel cells. These act like a mini power station within the car and generate electricity. They give high performance with zero emissions. The limiting factors at present are the cost of production and lack of refuelling stations. But last year Honda went into production with their first commercial model and fully expect the technology to take off so watch this space.

Moussaka A Traditional Greek Dish Ingredients: 3 eggplants, cut into slices 1/2 kilo minced meat, fried with diced onions, and cooked with 2 tablespoons tomato paste until done. home-made gratin: 11/2 cups milk 1 tablespoon flour 1 tablespoon mayonnaise 1 tablespoon vinegar salt, pepper, dry basil grated cheese

Heat the oven to 180 C. In a casserole, put some oil in the bottom, and put the eggplant slices evenly. On top of the eggplant spread the minced meat evenly. Put into the oven for 30 minutes. Make the gratin, by mixing the ingredients together well, then putting them on the fire and continuously stirring until consistency becomes like pudding. Let cool, and after the eggplant is done in the oven, pour the gratin over it, and return to the oven for another 30 minutes. When bubbly, take out of the oven and sprinkle with cheese, and put back in the oven until cheese is grilled and melted. Serve with rice, potatoes or bread.

Sumptuous Surroundings & Royal Residence The Ritz - London THE Ritz was opened on May 24th 1906, on the site of the Walsingham House Hotel, formerly the Bath Hotel. Conceived by renowned hotelier Cesar Ritz, The Ritz owes its architectural design to an extremely successful partnership formed in 1900 between Frenchman Charles Mewes, and Englishman Arthur Davis.

the hotel; Pavlova, the Russian Prima Ballerina, danced at The Ritz; the Aga Khan and Paul Getty had suites ; the Prince of Wales and Mrs. Simpson dined and danced in the Palm Court; and Churchill, de Gaulle and Eisenhower met for Summit Meetings in the Marie-Antoinette Suite during the Second World War.

Together they had originally designed the Hotel Ritz in Paris and the Carlton Hotel in London’s Haymarket (now replaced by New Zealand House) and between 1904 and 1905 they designed The Ritz in London. Cesar Ritz’s innovations for the hotel were, at that time, quite unique with bathrooms for every bedroom, double glazing, a sophisticated ventilation system, walk-in wardrobes, and brass, rather than wooden beds. With its French chateau-style architecture and all its interior decorations and furnishings in the style of Louis XV1, the hotel was, according to Cesar Ritz “a small house to which I am proud to see my name attached”.

The Ritz also became the favourite of Hollywood stars; Charlie Chaplin required 40 policemen to escort him through the fans into the hotel in 1921; Noel Coward wrote songs at The Ritz and Tallulah Bankhead sipped Champagne from a slipper during a press conference in the 1950’s. The Palm Court was as popular as “the place for tea” as it remains today.

The exterior of the hotel represents the influence of various Parisian architectural traditions with the famous Piccadilly Arcade famously described as “the shortest Rue de Rivoli in the world”. It was Mewes’ idea to carry out all the internal decorations and furnishings in one style and on entering the hotel the ground floor is dominated by the single Louis XVI theme in the vaulted gallery which runs the length of the building. The Palm Court epitomized the elegantly frivolous comfort of Edwardian high life while The Restaurant – often described as the most beautiful dining room in London – appeared to be permanently ‘en fete’ with its sumptuous chandeliers linked by gilt bronze garlands around the room. The bedrooms and suites on the upper floors, the gold leaf and plaster mouldings, marble fireplaces and comfortable furnishings gave the rooms the cosiness of an English stately home.

In 1995 The Ritz was returned to private British ownership when it was bought by Sir David Barclay and Sir Frederick Barclay’s private company Ellerman Investments. Almost immediately, a meticulous and complete refurbishment began on the Grade II* listed building. Fourteen years later The Ritz has been fully restored with no detail, either in the public areas or behind the scenes, left untouched. In January 2002 The Ritz London received a Royal Warrant for Banqueting and Catering services. Awarded by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, The Ritz is the first, and only, hotel to have been honoured with this most prestigious of awards.

More recently, in November 2006, The Ritz opened William Kent House, also Grade II * listed, which is situated at No. 22 Arlington Street overlooking the Green Park and adjoining the hotel. Designed in the 1940’s by the 18th century architect William Kent, from whom the house now takes its name, the historic mansion was known as Wimborne House when The Ritz opened in 1906. Acquired by the hotel owners in 2005, almost a hundred years after Cesar Ritz first tried to purchase the house and was rebuffed by Lord Wimborne, William Kent House underwent an The Ritz was an immediate success and, during its extensive period of restoration and refurbishment prior early years, enjoyed the patronage of the Prince of to the re-opening of its magnificent new reception Wales – later to become King Edward V111 – and the rooms. In keeping with the guidelines set down by English aristocracy. It was the first hotel to which English Heritage, the exquisite collection of lavishly young, unmarried women were allowed to go without decorated private dining rooms and residential suites chaperones ! Throughout its 100 year history The Ritz have been retained in their original Italian Renaissance has attracted the famous and the fashionable. King style décor and the majesty of William Kent House is Alfonso of Spain and Queen Amelie of Portugal met in now resplendently reborn.

Cesar Ritz always considered the well-being of his guests a major priority and the management and staff at The Ritz today continue that belief, working tirelessly to maintain its atmosphere of warmth, friendliness and timeless elegance.

Life in Balance Get in Shape with Karen Burr WHEN it came to diets Karen had tried them all. At her worst, she weighed more than 15 stone and her quality of life was being affected. She was well aware of the health risks of being overweight; diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, being the most common ailments associated with obesity. Then Karen discovered LighterLife and lost an amazing 5 stone. ‘I can honestly say it has changed my life. I am thrilled . The LighterLife Programme was set up more than a decade ago for people who are three stone or more overweight BMI >30 and are therefore considered to be clinically obese. I had been told so many times that I should eat less and exercise more. It was a relief to find an organisation that really understood I needed support to help me through the battle to lose weight – and keep it off afterwards too. I found the counselling kept me motivated and on track to reach my target’. I decided to train as LighterLife counsellor and offer others in the community, with a similar problem, the chance to lose weight and change their lives. My premises are in Sittingbourne High Street and I will be starting new groups shortly , therefore you realistically could be 3 stone lighter by CHRISTMAS !!!! There is now also a programme for people with a stone or more to lose, BMI 25 – 29.9 For more information and to book a free appointment call 07986 050914 or email me at Karen.burr@lighterlifecounsellor.com or visit www.lighterlife.com."

Are You Pregnant or Planning to Have a Child? Naturopath Sue Blain hands out dietary advice MUMS-to-be know they need to eat for baby’s optimum health. This means a variety of foods containing essential fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals, especially iron, folic acid, calcium, vitamins C & D and the Essential Fatty Acids, Omega-6 & 3. Folic acid and vitamin C help iron absorption, so a small drink of orange juice with lemon slices and a side salad with a meal, followed by strawberries, increases your iron uptake. Avoid tea and coffee, not only for their caffeine content, but because they actually inhibit the up-take of iron. Omega-6 & 3 fats are essential for your baby. Use sunflower or safflower oil in cooking, but never to high temperatures. Flax seeds, an excellent source of omega-3, need to be soaked first and then drunk with fruit juice or added to cereals. They also help to prevent constipation. Vitamin D, found in eggs and oily fish, is also naturally obtained from safe sun exposure, without burning or the use of chemical-laden sunscreens. Seek professional advice about a supplement if needed. If you receive Income Support you're entitled to free vitamins from maternity clinics. Choose lots of foods from the list below. cottage cheese live yogurt green vegetables peppers lemons flaxseeds eggs blackstrap molasses

beans lentils chickpeas almonds walnuts sun-dried apricots organic lean meat millet, quinoa.

Not only will you be eating but also drinking for two! Increase your usual amount and variety of fluids, using filtered or still mineral water that contains bicarbonates, vegetable juices and herb teas such as camomile or redbush. Check the small print when buying personal and household cleaning products to reduce your chemical load. Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite found in meat, cat faeces and soil that can be harmful to unborn babies. Always wear gloves when gardening or changing cat litter, and wash your hands afterwards..

The Health in Pregnancy Grant This £190 payment was devised to help mums have a healthy run up to their baby's birth. To qualify you need to be at least 25 weeks pregnant and a UK resident. To apply you need a claims form from your midwife or your doctor and it must be sent to the Grant Office within 31 days of your midwife or doctor signing it. For more information, contact the Grant Helpline on 0845 366 7885.
