Does Midas Business Solutions Have The Midas Touch? Midas Business Solutions is a fledgling company based in Ashford serving the whole of Kent. It’s the creation of two men with suitable business experience and the know how to develop a business and maintain and in most cases increase profitability.

Midas will slash your company’s costs without compromising on the quality of service and will give you the best advice to help grow you business. Midas is a one stop shop for businesses providing innovative cost reduction solutions and uses expertise in all areas of range of administration.

“The thinking behind the company is simple” says Ian Sleeper, Midas’s co founder. “We recognised there are companies whose owners may not have the time or inclination to deal with the general day to day business administration”.

“Now is not the time to bury your head in the sand but to face facts because now are tricky times and all around us are businesses either in administration or are facing a winding up order.

He continued “company owners generally want to do what they are best at and what they set up to do from day 1 and that is to talk about their own business and promote their own goods and services and are reluctant to get themselves involved in those non sexy areas of the business but find themselves having to or they employ staff to do some of that for them but are themselves not experienced or qualified to do so” “As a consequence we find too many businesses overpaying for contracts and services and we find they are not employing their staff as efficiently as they can be” “All this is totally understandable but totally unnecessary. Many company owners often find themselves chasing their tale and spinning round and round in circles wondering which way to turn whilst taking their eye o ff the ball and losing a sense of direction for their business. While this is going on they are not allowing time to manage and control their administrative overheads.” So what is the answer? Midas Business Solutions aim is to cure all administrative headaches and stop Managing Directors from going in circles. They are able to take over all administrative duties including business finance, payroll, bookkeeping, accountancy, accreditations, telecoms, office equipment, IT, marketing, web design, health and safety, energy efficiency and banking. “If I said we can provide all this AND guarantee to reduce you overheads, cut costs and increase your profits.....would you be impressed?” he said.

7

You’re not superman and you cannot do it all yourself and the more you try, the more you’ll fail. It is no disgrace to fail and it is certainly no disgrace to ask for help. Midas has the capacity to take on those tasks that are keeping you from doing those things you really want to be doing and that is talking about your company.” “And if I said we can carry out a FREE company health check that will involve a free consultation consisting of combing through your company accounts and giving advice on where cost savings can be made........wouldn’t that be worth giving a go?” Austerity needn’t mean severity Austerity, it’s all you ever hear about these days.......Downturn, Recession, Credit Crunch, call it what you will, it can wear you down? Business wise this could be the worst of times but Midas Business Solutions aim to make it the best of times. Poor sales needn’t be the end or even the last chance saloon. If your business, like most businesses, are on a rocky road or facing sticky times now is a good time to take stock of what you presently have, look around you and start to cut costs. Cost cutting needn’t mean expensive redundancy payments and an attack on your overheads is not an attack on your resources. Does Midas Business Solutions have the Midas touch? BOX OFFICE REVIEWS ZOOKEEPER Starring: Kevin James, Rosario Dawson, Lesley Bibb, Cher, Nick Nolte, Adam Sandler, Sylvester Stallone Director: Frank Coraci Rating: PG

Griffin Keyes (James) works at a Boston zoo taking care of the animals, but while he's great with relating to the lions, he's not so hot with the ladies. Eventually, he decides that the only way to find love is to leave and get a more glamorous job to impress potential love matches. In a desperate effort to stop their kind-hearted caretaker from deserting them, the animals decide to break their silence and reveal to him their big secret - they can talk. Hapless but dedicated Griffin has never got over being dumped by his girlfriend Stephanie (Bibb) and when she comes back into his life after five years, he falls over himself trying to impress her. But while he's busy doing that, he's completely oblivious to the fact that his soul mate - vet Kate (Dawson)- is working right alongside him at the zoo. To stop Griffin from leaving and to help him see the obvious, the zoo animals band together to help his romantic pursuit by teaching him about the rules of love, as seen from their point of view. It's all a bit formulaic, but the humour, while basic, works somehow. Adults will be entertained by the zoo animals being voiced by some very recognisable folks - Cher as a lioness and Adam Sandler as a monkey, to name but a couple, while the kids will be impressed with the sheer novelty of, well, talking animals. The answer to whether Zookeeper succeeds or fails, though, will fall firmly on the shoulders of James and his ability to make us sympathise with his character and root for him despite the glaringly obvious solutions in front of him. Thankfully, due in large part to the niche James has carved out for himself as a bit of an underdog, we do. It's never going to win any awards, but it's an entertaining and likeable summer family movie that will appeal to adults and kids alike.

BOX OFFICE REVIEWS CARS 2 Starring: Owen Wilson, Michael Caine, Larry The Cable Guy, Eddie Izzard, Emily Mortimer Director: John Lasseter Rating: U

While undoubtedly popular with the younger generation of film-goers, the 2006 original Cars was never one of Pixar's most highly-rated offerings, but now the sequel might have surpassed it in terms of 'must try harder'. Adventurer Axelrod (Izzard) issues a challenge to the fastest cars in the world to compete in a World Grand Prix in Tokyo, and Lightning McQueen (Wilson) and his sidekick Mater the tow-truck driver (Larry The Cable Guy) show up to take part. But it all falls apart when Mater is taken for a spy by British secret agent cars Finn McMissile (Caine) and Holly Shiftwell (Mortimer). Soon, Mater is embroiled in a conspiracy to destroy the cars competing in the Grand Prix, causing McQueen to lose the race and fall out with his friend. Along the way, there's some racing, and a few explosions, and some jokes. If it all sounds a bit cookie-cutter, that's because it is. However, it's not all bad. Pixar's animation is always breathtakingly good and Cars 2 is no exception - it's beautifully rendered and full of incredibly accurate detail, with the London and Tokyo back grounds being particularly worthy of a mention. Some good casting is evident - Caine is brilliantly cast as McMissile, for example, and there are strong performances from Wilson and Mortimer, but sadly, the plus points are overshadowed by a crushingly dull plot, badly-written jokes that consistently fall flat, and the unfortunate fact that Mater is without a doubt one of the most irritating lead characters ever to venture from the confines of the Pixar stable. That said, the kids will probably enjoy it, even if the plot is a bit too complicated for younger attention spans, but for adults, it's probably a bit too much like hard work. And there isn't even any Jeremy Clarkson this time around to provide the ranty comic relief.

Commercial Property Owners Owed Billions ££££££ An estimated 96% of all commercial property owners are paying too much tax by not claiming your capital allowances. So what exactly are Capital Allowances? Capital Allowances are retrospective claims based on the purchase price of a commercial property. This is not a contentious tax avoidance scheme or loophole, but is based on established UK Statutory law dating back to 1878. Every building has claimable allowances inherent within the purchase price and these are a valuable form of non-conflicting relief. The legislation was rewritten

11

in 2000 and is incorporated in the Capital Allowance Act 2001. Claims can be made retrospectively: there is no time limit on how far back you can go in your ownership of the property. You can even go back four tax years for a tax refund. Many of you will be aware that your accountants claim capital allowances for “movable” fixtures and fittings, plant and machinery. You will also be aware that you can’t claim such allowances for the “immovable” fabric of the building which is viewed as a non-depreciating asset. The grey and normally overlooked opportunity exists with the class of assets in the area between “movable” and “immovable”. Clearly office furniture is movable and the roof is immovable. But what about fixtures such as air-conditioning, emergency lighting and alarm systems? These are normally considered by accountants as “freehold improvements” and therefore not eligible, but HMRC will agree otherwise provided you approach them in the correct way, with the correct information presented in the approved manner.

Property owners often ask us why their accountants haven’t advised them about capital allowances and the answer is quite simple. Capital Allowances are a highly specialised area of the tax system, shrouded in complex legislation, and require many specific skill sets to identify and claim. So it is no reflection on the professionalism and diligence of accountants that many allowances go unclaimed.

Tax Claims have appointed Jeanette Edmiston, probably the UK’s top Capital Allowance Adviser, to head up its report team.

Typically we find Capital Allowances equivalent to 25% of the property’s purchase price and our fee is 6% plus VAT of the identified Capital Allowance. However, if we don’t secure you at least £25,000 in unclaimed allowances you won’t owe anyone a penny.

Richard Alexander has worked in financial services for 36 years and provides specialist financial planning services to expat and UK clients with accumulated capital who prefer the personal touch of a dedicated and trusted financial adviser. Richard aims to build long term client relationships by understanding their aspirations, to appreciate their concerns, sensitivities and risk tolerances and to provide a bespoke solution designed to achieve their goals. At the core of financial planning is recognition of the main objectives, which can often be expressed as a need for growth or income. Even when the objective is simply wealth preservation, a focus on growth will be needed to offset the effects of inflation. For people moving or retiring abroad, currency risk is a further consideration. Pension income may arise in the currency of the country of origin and fluctuations in exchange rates will affect the level of income. However, some private pensions can be transferred into a new plan held in the appropriate currency which will remove future currency risk.

15

Spain

Inheritance Tax may be a major consideration; Inheritance Tax in the UK is calculated by reference to the Estate of the deceased person whereas in Spain, it is calculated by reference to the beneficiaries, with the rates of tax varying, depending on who the beneficiaries are and their relationship to the deceased. Tax may also be due in both countries but there is a dual tax treaty which should ensure that double taxation can normally be avoided. Earlier UK planning may have involved the use of Trusts in the UK or offshore. If this is the case, you need to be aware that Spain does not recognise the status of Trusts and if you are the Settler of a Trust who has become Spanish tax resident, the local tax authorities are likely to ignore the Trust and treat the assets and income or gains arising as your personal income or gains and seek to tax you accordingly. Clients of RAFP benefit from our relationship with local tax specialists in each country and can be confident that their investments will be appropriate to their individual tax position and future plans.

BOTTOMS UP FOR LATEST SURGERY FAD

J-Lo's large but pert derriere has a lot to answer for. It used to be that a few toning exercises at the gym was enough to achieve a cute bum, but now the rich and famous are virtually being forced to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure called a Brazilian buttock lift to get an A-list bottom. Celebrities all over the world are keen to get their pert little, or big, bottoms photographed in buttock-skimming dresses on the red carpet. Winners of various best bum awards include the small and pert bottoms of Kate Hudson, Uma Thurman, Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, Cameron Diaz and Denise Van Outen and the larger rears of Charlotte Church, Mariah Carey, Beyonce Knowles and, of course, J-Lo herself. Whether you have a small or big butt, a Brazilian buttock lift adds definition and creates a pert look, says cosmetic surgeon, Dr Luiz S Toledo, who is a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. (BAAPS). During the procedure, surgeons use a mixture of liposuction and fat grafting to sculpt a shapelier bottom. Toledo explains, "There are two main body types: gynoid, with a concentration of fat below the waistline, and android, which concentrates fat above the waistline. Both types can benefit from this type of surgery. "The gynoid type usually needs liposuction of the hips, thighs, legs, tummy and fat injection in the buttocks. The android type will usually need liposuction of the arms, back, hips, tummy and breasts. Fat is injected into the buttocks and often the inner thighs as well. "To lift the buttock, the surgeon makes an incision in the hip area and the buttock and the fat removed from liposuction is then reinjected, increasing the volume of the buttock. "In many cases, simply the removal of the excess fat will bring about a major improvement in the area, says Toledo. The operation takes from one to three hours and is usually carried out under local anaesthetic together with a sedative. Patients are normally discharged the same day. An elastic girdle is worn for a couple of weeks after the operation to help stabilise the new shape and minimise swelling. Mobility is essential, so walking is encouraged from day two following the surgery, increasing the distance each day. This assists with swelling, water retention and circulation.

17

Major complications from liposculpture and fat injection are rare, says Toledo. However, potential risks include asymmetry, rippling and pigmentation of the skin, bleeding, infection and problems with the anaesthetic. Temporary numbness of the skin and haematomas - blood accumulations under the skin - are possible mild complications. The results may take a few months to fully show due to fluid retention and surgery swelling. Once the shape has fully stabilised after six months, Toledo says results should be Permanent without further weight gain, especially when combined with diet and exercise.

A Brazilian buttock lift costs between â‚Ź5,000 and â‚Ź10,000.

THE MANY FACES OF SHORT HAIR For all the women out there who chopped off their long locks for a short bob or pixie cut, the good news is that they're still hotter than a pair of hair strengtheners. Thanks to our very own international style export Victoria Beckham and Hollywood stars such as Elisha Cuthbert, these cute hairstyles are here to stay for the foreseeable future - or at least until they decide to add hair extensions. Short hair has so many benefits for women. Not only are short styles wonderfully low maintenance, they are an excellent way to frame your face and make the most of your best features. Short hair also forces you to style your hair every day instead of lazily tying it back in a pony tail. The problem is that many women are frightened by any hairstyle that lops off hair above the shoulder. They worry that short hair won't be feminine enough or won't suit their face shape. The truth is that you can wear your hair short if you choose the right style and it can be super sexy and girlie.

Long or oval faces If your face is long or oval, stylists recommend an angular bob that's closely cropped to the nape of the neck and traces the jaw line in the front, which helps to square-up the face. Kym Ryder and Victoria Beckham's hair styles are perfect examples of an angular bob, although you need poker straight hair to pull off a super sharp cut as Kym has. For long and narrow faces, extra volume at the sides, like Victoria's, helps to widen the face. To style angular bobs, apply a light hold gel to towel dried hair and blow dry using a round brush so hair falls just under the chin. Short styles that must be avoided are pixies that add layers to the top of the hair, which will further elongate the face.

19

Please Mention Across Kent When You Call Our Advertisers

0844 588 7611

Square faces If your face is square, you can soften the shape with a short and choppy pixie cut. The pixie is perfect for making the most of your eyes and cheekbones, which draws attention away from an overly square jaw line. To style, blow dry hair and use a quality styling cream or wax to sculpt and tease each section. Short styles to avoid are angular chin-length bobs, which will accentuate the jaw line.

Round or heart-shaped faces If your face is round or heart shaped, you can skim away volume by adding framing long layers and a side-swept fringe. A fringe also helps to highlight the eye area rather than the cheeks, where round faces are at their fullest. To style, try flicking the ends out rather than blowing them under, which can slim the face by changing the direction of the hair. Apply a maximum-hold mousse to damp hair and use fingers and a blow dryer to achieve a younger edgier style. Short styles to avoid are sleek Betty Boo bobs that tuck under the chin, which will add further volume to the cheeks and round out the face and a blow dryer to achieve a younger edgier style.

SWEET CHILLI CRAB NOODLES Delicious, delicate and ready in less than 20 minutes, this is ideal for a light midweek supper. Don't over-soak the noodles though, or they might go soggy. If you don't fancy crab, this would work with thinly-sliced stir fried chicken, too. Serves 2.

INGREDIENTS 150g vermicelli noodles Sunflower oil for frying 1 red pepper, de-seeded and sliced into thin strips 100g baby sweetcorn, cut in half lengthways 6 spring onions, trimmed and sliced 1 x 200g can white crab meat, drained 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup 1 tablespoon soy sauce fresh coriander, chopped, to garnish

METHOD 1. Put the noodles into a bowl of boiling water and soak for 5 minutes. Pour into a colander and leave to drain. 2. In a non-stick pan, heat the oil. Add the peppers and sweetcorn and stir-fry for 3 minutes. 3. Add the drained noodles, onions, crab, chilli sauce, ketchup and soy sauce. Stir fry the mixture for a further 3 minutes. 3. Spoon into serving bowls and scatter the fresh coriander over the top to garnish. Eat with chopsticks if you're feeling adventurous!

OVER 50s WIN THE DATING GAME When Cupid draws back his bow he doesn't just aim for the 18-30s. In fact if you want to know which age group has great success in love look a little further up the scale. Being over 50 used to mean being over the hill, but these days the baby boom generation are teaching their offspring a thing or two about romance. Fittingly, the generation that brought us the first summer of love in the 60s are now showing the younger generation how to find romance according to a report by Facts International on behalf of dating service Parship.co.uk. It revealed that 73 per cent of over-50 singles fully intend to find a fulfilling sexual relationship in the next 12 months, while 84 per cent want a full sexual relationship with the next person they meet. Generally four out of 10 of over 50s are looking for commitment, but one in five only wants casual fun and 19 per cent are game for anything. What's more, over half of the over-50s singles don't look to their family for approval, with 60 per cent saying they don't care what their children think of their dates. There could be a few raised eyebrows from the younger generations of the family as 18 per cent of the senior group said they would happily date someone at least 10 years younger, while they are three times more likely than 20-something's to flirt with complete strangers. Carol Dix, author of the Ultimate Guide to 21st Century Dating , is in the 50+ generation and recently met a younger man when on holiday after flirting with him in a bar. She is happy to report that their relationship is still going strong. "Many of the 50+ generation believe strongly in finding sexual passion and romance, rather than just looking for a stable (possibly rather dull) relationship," she says. "We've had marriages, raised our children and know what's important to look for in the opposite sex. There's not much point in us settling for companionship when we could be finding great sex, fun, love and laughter out there." Not only are the older generations better at dating than their younger counterparts but they are also keeping up with the times by dating online. To fulfil their lust for life, over-50 singles are turning to the internet in increasing numbers. Of those surveyed, 43 per cent are logging on to find dates compared with just 26 per cent six months ago.

Yet traditional standards still prevail. While the majority (76 per cent) of single people over 50 don't believe in one partner for life, and 68 per cent regret not having had sex with a person from their past, the majority, 77 per cent still believe it is better to be sexually faithful to one partner. Dr Victoria Lukats points out that an increasing number of people in their 50s and 60s are finding themselves single, often for the first time in decades. "The idea that this age group is no longer interested in a sexual relationship is simply a misconception. These figures show that experience probably counts for a lot when it comes to approaching a potential love interest. If you've made mistakes or had regrets in life then you're not going to lose any more time on missed opportunities but maybe try and live life to the full and be more proactive in looking for love."

WARNING NOT READING THIS MAY SERIOUSLY HARM YOUR POCKET

NOT ADVERTISING IS SUICIDAL FOR ANY COMPANY Every company needs to advertise if it is to remain in business, especially in these tough economic times. Even the dominant worldwide companies like McDonalds & Coca-Cola advertise on a regular basis. When customers think of a product they want – whom do you want them to think of? If they don’t know who you are or what you have to offer they will be turning to your competitors. Every day you are not advertising is another day your competitors win your potential customers. Those customers might not need your product immediately but the more often they see your Company Name the more chances they will remember it when they do need your product. During the busy hot summer months when holidaymakers are making your tills ring, it is all too easy to forget that come September you will need to actively encourage new customers to use your business. Advertising in our Online Publication ACROSS KENT offers realistically priced advert costs, helping to save your overall budget plus giving your company great exposure to the general public. A large survey was conducted in 2009, which centred on the changing reading habits of the general public. The over-whelming opinion, when it came to reading was that people prefer to read a newspaper or magazine ON-LINE because it was FREE, it was easy to access & it is more environmentally friendly, so no wastage of paper. Each monthly issue of ACROSS KENT is electronically delivered to almost 12,500 recipients with that figure growing on a virtual daily basis, which not only offers genuinely low advertising rates for businesses but also offers the readers a publication that they look forward to receiving because it is full of interesting articles and features. We also offer businesses the opportunity to offer Special Discounts to our customers using our Discount Coupon Section at the rear of the ACROSS KENT on-line Magazine. Here you can encourage potential customers to visit you at perhaps a quieter time of the week and keep those tills ringing. For details of how to advertise in our next issue please email: info@findacoupon.co.uk or telephone us on: 0844 588 7611.

Writing Your Will ………. it couldn’t be any easier A will is probably the most important legal document you’ll ever own, and yet more than 60% of adults in the UK die without one. If a will is drafted correctly, it could save a great deal of tax for your beneficiaries; it could protect the family home against long-term care fees; it could protect the inheritance of the children of a former marriage; it could avoid loss of state benefits for a disabled person. So why do so many people keep putting it off? The reasons commonly given are cost, the inconvenience of having to visit the solicitor’s office, and the problems of understanding all the legal jargon. Here at Sterling Wills Ltd., we publish our fees on our website (www.sterlingwills.co.uk) so there are no nasty surprises; we include a home visit as part of the service, at no extra cost, and we explain everything in plain English, all of which adds up to a very good reason for not putting it off any longer. Anything you tell us will be in the strictest confidence; no information will be passed to any third party. We are members of the Society of Will Writers and we adhere to the Society’s Code of Practice.

Managing Director Ronald Bateman makes this pledge: ‘We have a number of priorities in the way we do business, such as observing the highest ethical and professional standards, fair dealing, protecting all personal data – the list is a long one. But top of the list is customer satisfaction, closely followed by value-for-money, and we’ll never be complacent about those two goals, because all the others then fall into place. After all, there’s no better form of advertising than a satisfied customer.’ However simple or complex you requirements may be, our Consultant will ask all the relevant questions and present you with the appropriate options. For example, you may wish to protect 50% of the family home against long-term care fees; this would require trusts to be included in the wills. Or let’s say you need discretionary trusts in your wills; these can serve a number of purposes, such as protecting a disabled person from losing state benefits because he or she inherits a large sum. If the inheritance is held by the trustees so that they can release funds as and when they’re needed, the state benefits will not be lost. And, most importantly, we don’t sell; we simply offer a solution to your own individual needs and we let you choose. PLEASE CALL US ON 0845 4900324 or email info@sterlingwills.co.uk to arrange an appointment or for further information.
