First Aid

A few minutes to save someone’s life Your daughter has a nosebleed. Your father chokes on a piece of meat. Your toddler swallows some floor cleaner. Would you know what to do? First aid is the care given before the emergency services arrive. A blocked airway can kill someone in three to four minutes but it can take eight to 12 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. Knowing how to open someone’s airway could mean the difference between life and death. Almost 4000 people per year die because of accidents in their homes and statistically you are far more likely to be called upon to administer first aid to someone you know than to a stranger.

dressing is the best way to staunch the flow. Make someone sick if they’ve swallowed poison NO, this can block their airway or, if the substance is corrosive, damage it further. Most first aid is common sense and there are many organisations which provide short courses, most last just half a day. Your employer might provide training but if not you could enrol the whole family on a course and make an event of it. Even young children will feel empowered to learn new skills and you never know when they might come in useful!

The top ten injuries or accidents in the home are: Falls Strikes and collisions Cuts and abrasions Foreign bodies Over exertion e.g. moving heavy furniture Burns and scalds Crush injuries Bites and stings Puncture wounds e.g. stepping on a child’s toy Suspected poisoning There are many myths and misconceptions about injuries. Here are the most common: Butter or cream is good for a burn NO, immerse the injured limb in cool water. If you can move a limb it’s not broken NO, the only sure way to tell if a limb is broken is to x-ray it. Put a bleeding wound under a tap NO, by all means clean the wound if required but water will wash away the body’s own clotting agents so compression with a clean

GREAT CHRISTMAS MARKETS ACROSS EUROPE Top ten Christmas markets Not got into the festive spirit yet? Why not head to a traditional Christmas market to get ahead with your festive shopping, and enjoy mulled wine, carol singing and a host of other seasonal treats says Cora Lydon

Helsinki Christmas markets

As you might expect from the home of Santa Claus, Helsinki in Finland sure knows how to celebrate the festive season. The festivities kick off at the end of November as the main shopping street in the city centre – Aleksanterinkatu – is elaborately decorated and the beautifully illuminated Joulukatu (Christmas Street) is opened by Santa Claus himself. During December there are two Christmas markets. The first is the indoor Ladies Market at Vanha Satama, open from December 2-6. Four rooms display handicrafts, decorations, gifts and foods created by the Finnish women – keep an eye out for Christmas Elf napkin rings, traditional Finnish spicy mustard with Clavados, fur ear muffs and hand-knitted shawls which all make excellent gifts. Then at Esplanade Park from 7-20 December more than 120 stalls make up the St Thomas Christmas Market which features gifts, and handmade decorations make from Birch wood (though also look out for iron works, cups, knits and furs too). And though the crisp winter days may be a bit on the chilly side warm glogi (mulled wine), special brewed dark beers, hot chocolates, spiced gingerbreads and sweet plum pastries will soon warm you up. Info: Black Tomato offers three night’s B&B at Hotel Klaus K and return flights from £499 per person. www.blacktomato.co.uk. Visit www.visitfinland.com/uk for more on Helsinki.

Bath Christmas Market

The World Heritage city of Bath adds a touch of Hollywood glamour to festive proceedings as A-list actor Nicholas Cage is lined up to switch on the Christmas lights on November 26 – the first day of the popular Christmas market. The 11-day market is bordered by the famous Bath Abbey and Roman Baths and features over 120 traditional wooden chalet

stalls showcasing a raft of seasonal shopping and locally sourced gift ideas. There’s plenty of stocking filler gems to be had here including hand-crafted gifts, toys, cards and of course festive food. You can keep the chills at bay thanks to the food stands serving up pancakes, soups, sausages and more. Plus to add to the seasonal celebrations entertainment will be laid on from singers and musicians – making this one of the UK’s most popular Christmas destinations. Info: Solos Holidays are organising a two-night group holiday for singles including a full-day visit to Bath and its market, a guided walking tour of the city and accommodation, at a cost of £229. www.solosholidays.co.uk. Visit www.bathchristmasmarket.co.uk for more on the market.

cheeses, while other stalls will be selling silversmith jewellery, textiles, art and clothing. If you’re after an unusual and ethical choice the Ethical Christmas Market will hit the spot (12-20 December, Princes Street) with everything from eco-gadgets to fair trade wine. Info: For more details on the Christmas offerings in Edinburgh visit www.edinburghschristmas.com.

Edinburgh Christmas Market Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, London

The Scottish city of Edinburgh positively sparkles during December with a host of festive events for visitors and locals. Beneath the dramatic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle visitors will be greeted by a spectacular display of fairy lights and a range of seasonal markets. From 26 November the iconic big wheel springs to life, the Winter Wonderland ice rink welcomes skaters and the markets open. From this date through to Christmas Eve the German market can be found at Mound Precinct, offering beautiful hand made gifts and decorations, warming Gluhwein and German staple dishes such as potato cakes and sausages. At East Princes Street Gardens from 26 Nov – 4 January the Highland Village markets will be tempting shoppers with quality Highlands produce – such as venison, haggis, oatcakes and Scottish

Soaking up the Christmas spirit needn’t mean leaving the country, as the capital puts on a great bash from 21 November through to 3 January. There’s plenty to keep everyone amused with a temporary ice rink – London’s largest outdoor rink; a Winter Wonderland giant observation wheel offering great views across Hyde Park; Zippos Christmas Circus and a German Christmas market. Here you can find more than 50 decorated chalets offering continental food and drink and a range of gifts – with a cheery atmosphere it sure beats the crowds on Oxford Street. Entry is free, but costs are involved for the various activities. With so much going on this is the perfect family day out and Southeastern has now extended its high speed service to include weekends. An hourly return service runs from St Pancras International to Ashford International, an a half hourly return shuttle service from Ebbsfleet International to St Pancras International. It’s also home to an extensive traditional Christmas market from 1-23 December in the heart of one of Europe’s largest Medieval squares – Rynek Glowny. Wooden stands are laden with a range of unique decorations, sweets, gifts and other goodies which would make perfect gifts for friends and family – look out for local jewellery, woollen knits, honey cake, Bohemian glass and Polish amber. If you want to try some typical Belgian goodies sample croustillons (doughnuts), caricoles (winkles in a spicy sauce) and of course no visit to Belgium would be complete without chocolate! For children there’s a small ice skating rink next to the main rink, old fashioned merry-go-rounds, a big wheel, street theatre and festive music while the Grand’Place is a must-see during the Christmas season – as it’s beautifully lit up for the occasion. The perfect accompaniment to all that shopping is the Danish gløgg – a hot, spicy drink made from red wine. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the village of nikkekobing – a large tent which features a winter wonderland and mechanical pixies, while the Royal Danish Ballet will be presenting The Nutcracker at Tivoli’s Concert Hall rounding off the perfect Christmas holiday. One of the most popular Christmas markets with Brits – thanks to the ease of getting there via Eurostar. For six weeks (18 November-30 December) this Christmas market is held in the Place Rihour at the heart of the town. Eight chalets are packed to the brim with festive delights – regional specialities vie with arts and crafts from Russia, Poland and Quebec, and the scent of mulled wine and gingerbread is in the air. Nativity figurines are popular purchases and can be found in abundance. On the Main Square a big wheel is the focus, sitting some 50 metres above the city and offering stunning views, while the gentle sounds of Christmas carols fill the air. Garden View This issue - Evergreens AS the days become shorter and darker it’s tempting to stay indoors. Often our gardens look a bit depressing at this time of year but they really don’t have to. True most of the leaves have fallen, branches are bare and the majority of flowering species are dormant but with a little planning you can still produce a plot which is a pleasure to look at. It’s this time of year that the evergreens hold centre stage. These bastions of winter are overshadowed by their showier counterparts all year. Now they provide colour and structure. Because it’s winter evergreens are most important next to the house. That way, even when we’re trapped indoors, we can still look out at something beautiful. Don’t just think conifers, there are a host of other evergreens to provide variety. Garrya elliptica is festooned with catkins at this time year and the glossy leaves of a camellia look very pretty against a house, though you need to remember to enrich the soil with humus.

6

Heathers are extremely versatile. Create a patchwork effect with greens, yellows and orange-reds. I love ivy too. The range of leaf shapes and sizes is enormous and colours vary from yellow-greens through dark, to variegated and even tinged with pink. You can’t beat conifers for structure though and the colours are amazing. I particularly like golden Chamaecyparis lawsoniana and Thujas, which start off green then turn to rust as soon as the first frost hits. And don’t forget holly. For small gardens try Blue Angel, which is self-fertile and looks fabulous grown as a standard. When it’s smothered in glossy berries it’s a real WOW plant. Just what’s needed in as the year is coming towards an end!

Evergreen Planting Tips The perfect time to plant your evergreens is now! Dig a hole several times larger than either the container the shrub was purchased in, or the dimensions of the roots for a bare-rooted specimen. Dig over the base of the hole and incorporate plenty of humus. If the soil is dense and claggy dig in some grit.

Tease out a few of the stronger roots to encourage them to branch out into their new surroundings. Enrich the soil you’ve removed from the hole with a little compost and some slow release fertiliser. Return the soil around the shrub and firm sown until the correct level is reached. Water thoroughly, stake if required and remember to use special ties which will not restrict growth.

Turn out the plant and check that it will be at the same level after planting as it was in the pot.

SHOW APARTMENT NOW OPEN AT AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT One-third of apartments already allocated on the successful scheme A development of affordable new homes in Tonbridge is proving so popular that less than three weeks after it was officially opened, 13 of the 41 two-bedroom apartments at Cannons Wharf on Medway Wharf Road have already been allocated. The launch of a show apartment at the development this weekend (27th November) is expected to further boost interest, and will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm. The homes are available to anyone with a connection to the Tonbridge and Malling district who is seeking an affordable home in the area and they are being offered with a range of low-cost home ownership options. Depending upon your individual circumstances, the apartments are available under the New Build HomeBuy and Rent to Homebuy schemes as well as on an Intermediate Rent basis. Built by Redrow Homes, the apartments feature a fitted kitchen that includes an oven, hob and canopy, along with a Zanussi integrated fridge freezer and integrated washer dryer. Some properties also include a balcony. Sales and Marketing Manager, Diane Webster said: “We were delighted at the success of our launch event and really happy that we have been able to offer the first of these homes to some of those who attended. Some of our new clients will be moving into their brand new home in time for Christmas so it’s a really exciting time for them.”

She added: “Most of the apartments we have so far allocated have been purchased under the New Build HomeBuy scheme and it is great to see these purchasers taking their first step on the property ladder. However, for those who are unable to purchase straight away, our rent to HomeBuy and Intermediate Rent schemes are offering a really welcome alternative for them. “The opening of our show apartment is great news; anyone interested in securing one of the remaining properties is invited to come along and see for themselves the quality of the homes on offer and the great value for money they represent. Our staff will be more than happy to explain the available schemes in more detail and carry out an eligibility assessment for those who are keen to take the next step.” The New Build HomeBuy scheme enables buyers to purchase a share of the property with a minimum 25 per cent currently available from just £37,500. Most purchasers will need to raise a mortgage to purchase their share and then pay a subsidised rent on the remaining share. They can also ‘staircase’ - purchasing additional shares in the future, if they wish, until they own the property outright. Alternatively, if you are unable to buy straight away, the apartments are available on the innovative Rent to HomeBuy scheme that provides a stepping stone between renting and purchasing. Under this option, people can move into the property they want to purchase as a tenant and pay a discounted rent – saving 20 per cent against the current market rental rate. While they are renting, they are encouraged to save for a deposit. The monthly rents currently start at an incredibly competitive £520. If you prefer not to purchase, Orbit First Step can offer some of these apartments through the Intermediate Rent scheme, at the same discounted monthly rent of £520 per month. It is estimated that you would need a household income of at least £20,964 for these properties to be affordable. For further information on the two developments, please call a member of the sales team on

CREDIT CRUNCH - Rent back or Buy back? IS the credit crunch eating away at your savings? Are you struggling to keep up your mortgage repayments? Are companies offering easy loan and mortgage repayments not quite fitting the bill? Do you really not want to move but feel you have no other option? Many of Britain’s home owners are struggling to pay off their mortgages, but there may now be hope with the latest craze to hit Britain. The sell-your-home-to-rent-it-back scheme is the newest revelation in selling your home without actually having to move. This revelation gives you the chance to sell your home enabling you to rent it back, and with a 5 year tenancy agreement there is even the opportunity to eventually buy back your home. It offers the no hassle of moving and settling into a new house, or adjusting to new surroundings and with so many of us jumping onto the bandwagon it’s set to be a revolution. This generation is set to struggle financially, with first time buyers finding it harder than ever to get even one step on the property ladder and at this rate there is little hope for the next generation with house prices ever rising. Professor David Blanchflower, former Bank of England policy maker describes the situation as “The biggest economic war we have faced in 100 years”.

With the credit crunch still as bad as ever, there seems there is little hope for many of us, but even though Britain is still in recession we are all still spending our money like there’s no tomorrow and with high street shop windows flirting with our eyes promoting sales it’s no surprise that we are. With some shops such as lingerie store Ann Summers noticing as much as a 30% rise in sales, we ask ourselves why are we spending so much and not doing anything about our homes. It’s a very worrying prospect and time to live in, but with America reporting that they are no longer in recession there is still hope for us. Professor David Blanchflower still worries however “There is very little sign employment improving at all, and to prepare for the worst and hope for the best”. All we can do is hope. Paul and Chris Beaufoy from Devon are just one of the many couples who are out of ideas. With a beautiful home in the seaside town of Torquay with breathtaking views across the English Riviera, it’s understandable why they wouldn’t want to move. With Paul just being made redundant and Chris registered disabled they feel that they have no other option but to sell. “We can’t afford to make the mortgage repayments, we struggle enough as it is but we really don’t want to move. We have created this haven for our children to live in and to think that we have to lose it all to move somewhere that we can no longer call home is unbearable,” Describes Chris. But after a long time spent researching into the sell-your-home-to-rent-it-back phenomenon, Paul and Chris now feel that what was once a limited number of options available to them has now

become numerous options. “I feel as if a new set of cards have been dealt out on the table, I can’t believe this is such a simple option and an easy way out of our misery. A huge weight has been lifted off of our shoulders,” Says a delighted and relieved Paul. Paul and Chris now share their experience with other mortgage owners who are in similar situations, urging them to reconsider and re-evaluate their options as there may just be hope around the corner. If you are no longer in a position of affording to pay back your mortgage fear not, as the easiest option of them all may just be a simple phone call or a click away. It’s simple! Fill in the grid so that each row, column and 3x3 box, contains the numbers 1 through to 9 with no repetition. You don’t need to be a genius. These puzzles use logic alone.

When was the last time you picked up a poem? Go on, admit it. For a wedding? Skimming it in the newspaper? Or (shame on you) at school? You’re not alone – hardly anyone seems to read poetry for pleasure these days. And yet, when you consider, it’s perfect – short, sharp nuggets of storytelling which can fit anywhere into your day. As a starting point, then ‘The World’s Wife’ is perfect. Duffy, recently appointed Poet Laureate, has a knack for creating convincing voices. (So convincing in fact that one of her earlier poems, ‘Education for Leisure’, was removed from the GCSE English Literature exam in case impressionable teenagers were unable to distinguish the irony and saw the speaker as a role model!) Here, she tells the unheard stories of women, wives and lovers throughout history – from Queen Herod to The Kray Sisters. The tone of the collection varies from the humorous to the poignant. Mrs Icarus, for example, is scathing: I’m not the first or the last to stand on a hillock watching the man she married prove to the world he’s a total, utter, absolute, Grade A pillock. whereas Anne Hathaway recalls in lyrical detail the ‘spinning world’ of the bed she shared with Shakespeare. Often the poems reflect on the more famous male partners, husbands and brothers, but elsewhere they explore the world of the women who speak them: Elvis’s Twin Sister, you may be surprised to learn, is a nun. In particular, Duffy draws on

mythology, giving a voice to Penelope and Eurydice, and re-interpreting the accepted versions of their stories. Every page has something new to offer, and each poem can become a favourite. Mrs Aesop may laugh last and longest here and you may well join her: once the laughter has stopped, then you may find yourself recalling other voices too. The Diary of a Killer Cat – Anne Fine One of the most difficult groups to buy books for is the newly confident reader. Too grown up for picture books, and yet not quite ready for the favourite childhood novels you’ve been saving for them, they are a tricky audience. This mini-novel by Anne Fine is a perfect transition. Written in short chapters – between two and seven pages long – and with plenty of line drawings and some full page illustrations, it allows the young independent reader to go at their own pace. As the title suggests, this is the story of a ‘killer cat’. Told by Tuffy, the murderous feline in question, it details his life of crime, beginning with an attack on a bird ‘Okay, okay. So maybe I shouldn’t have dragged it in and left it on the carpet.’ Ellie, his owner is understandably upset, as are her parents. So when Tuffy drags in the remains of next door’s rabbit, they feel they have to intervene... Of course, all is not as it seems, and there are plenty of hilarious twists to keep children reading and giggling. And, if they can’t quite muster the stamina, then parents will certainly enjoy reading this aloud – and the cat might like to listen, too!

Film (Review)

As promised, Michael Jackson was to perform the songs his fans loved best and this film features him practicing all of his greats. It’s made clear that he is saving his voice in particular, for his live shows but he still sings The Earth Song, Billy Jean and Man in the Mirror to a good standard. The film shows Michael very much involved with his tour, from hand-picking his dancers to perfecting tempos; he may not have performed for some time before but he certainly knew his own music inside out. The footage showed the amazing schedule for the tour, not only because of Michael himself but also because of some of the most talented dancers in the world, new recordings and special effects. The tour was set to push scientific boundaries.

This is it, the last time Michael Jackson was filmed in length before he passed away. There’s no denying that whilst every type of MJ merchandise has been sold for the profit of others, this is yet another way for the exploiters to cash in on the legendary King of Pop. But if you are a true fan of Michael Jackson then you won’t want to miss out on seeing this last footage for, what would have been an amazing concert. Apart from MJ’s very skinny frame, there is no inclination that the star was ill in health. If anything, he still moves exceptionally well for a man of 50.

16

Of course This Is It is no substitute for the concert but it is still entertaining and worth seeing MJ doing what he does best, which is never going to be dull. There are sad moments when the dancers give an emotional display of what it meant for them to be on stage with MJ but also funny ones when Michael manages to put a smile on your face with his witty comments. This Is It shows Michael Jackson as he was weeks before he died; hardworking and determined to make this the best tour ever and amongst everything else, this pays a fair tribute to the King of Pop.

Loony Limerick There once was a young girl named Mary, Who wanted to train as a fairy, She tried out a spell Which didn’t go well, Now her face and her hands are all hairy!

The charity was founded in 1993 and was originally set up to take sick and disabled children on holidays, however it was soon decided that a permanent home should be built and in 1999 ‘Footprints’ our first home for children aged 3 – 17 years opened its doors. In the year 2000 our facilities were taken a step further and we welcomed our first permanent resident. Today we have two homes next door to each other as ‘Footprints’ is only able to take children upto 17 years old and some of our children were rapidly approaching eighteen, when the building next door came up For Sale it was purchased and with much fundraising ‘Redwalls’ opened its doors in 2007 to the 18 – 30’s, just in time for two of our children to move across. Both homes have been built, designed and furnished with the needs, comfort, and enjoyment of the children and young people in mind. Many of the rooms in 'Footprints' are themed to include such fairytale stories as ‘Cinderella’, ‘Aladdin’, and ‘Peter Pan’. Among the other facilities is a Sensory Room which provides a tranquil place to relax and enjoy the different textures, sounds and watch the fishes swim in the bubble tubes as well as The Spa with its lovely warm therapeutic bubbling water. ‘Redwalls’ is furnished and designed to more grown up tastes and requirements. The Kitchen is fitted with an electric work top with hob inset that can be raised and lowered accordingly so that all the residents that wish to participate in Kitchen activities are able to. The young people living at

Redwalls are encouraged to make their own choices and develop their independent skills with access to local colleges, day centres and community clubs etc. We are always in need of Volunteers at Kent Kids and there are a variety of opportunities available for anybody to get involved with from gardening, kitchen duties, administration to helping the fundraising team at events or putting on a fundraising event yourself, we are always on hand to advise or support whatever you decide to do. Why don't you help us to spread some sunshine into the lives of our sick and disabled children and young adults. During the build-up to Christmas on various dates during December we will be at Canterbury Market where the Market Traders Association have arranged for us to have our Christmas Grotto complete with Father Christmas and a giant Tombola so come along and visit us or if you have a few hours to spare, give the fundraising office a call as we would welcome some assistance to help man the stall. If you are interested in learning more about Kent Kids Miles of Smiles, or to donate or find out about fundraising visit our web-site www.miles-of-smiles.org.uk, or call the fundraising office on 01227 780796 Kent Kids Miles of Smiles, Footprints, Stodmarsh Road, Canterbury, Kent. Mercedes E-class Estate

“...it ticks all the boxes you would expect it to...” LIKE many other manufacturers, Mercedes has vastly expanded its model range over the years. You can now find two-seater sports cars, diesel-powered and high-performance saloons and vast and very capable off-roaders that all bear the German company’s three-pointed star. But the one major market area that the company is almost completely absent from is the MPV, or people carrier, segment. One very good reason for this is the Mercedes E-class estate. The big selling-point offered by many people carriers is size – they boast more interior boot-space, leg room and cubby holes than their hatchback cousins. Pop open the boot on the E-class estate, and it is easy to see why Mercedes feels that perhaps it is not entirely necessary to expand its range when it already boasts a car with such an immense carrying capacity.

“ The Boot in the E-class is huge”

But if you are looking to buy a top-end estate car, then sheer size is not the only box you’ll be looking to tick in terms of practicality. Mercedes makes sure it ticks all the boxes you would expect it to, and then adds a few more that you might not have thought of. A favourite touch in the rear is a little valance-style strip of canvas that folds out from underneath the boot floor. It flips down over the shiny strip of metal that sits at the boot entrance and prevents it from getting scratched by any dog paws that may be jumping over it. As well as little touches such as this, the boot also offers a series of add-ins that the premium estate buyer is getting more and more used to. One is the slick method of folding the rear seats – pulling a lever in the boot will drop the seats flat, meaning you don’t have to walk from back to side and back again when trying to fit a long load in the boot.

The practicality doesn’t just cover the transportation of dogs and inanimate objects though. Mercedes reckons that 40 percent of all E-class estates will sell with the optional two rear-facing seats in the boot. These are designed for children up to 140cm tall, and fold away into the back of the rear seat and into the boot. They are really only occasional seats, and also compromise the amount of under-floor storage, but they are a great addition for those occasions when the kids’ friends turn up for the day. The £1500 option cost is a hefty chunk, but it should add to the used value of the car and will pay for itself if you have a large extended family.

The boot in the E-class is huge. Not only that, it is huge compared to its rivals as well. To put it into figures, if you were to drop the seats you get 1950 litres of space in the rear. To put this into context the Merc’s two main rivals, the Audi A6 and the BMW 5-series, manage capacities of 1660 and 1650 litres respectively.

All worked well in the day-long test we had with the car, but it would be interesting to see whether a driver will remain as receptive to the warnings after several years of living with the car. The range of engines with the E-class covers almost every requirement. The diesels will make up the bulk of sales in the UK, and they make by far the most sense. The 250CDI is the pick of the bunch, as it offers exactly the same economy and emissions figures as the lower-powered 220CDI. Both are capable of a highly credible 48.7mpg and emit just 150g/km CO2 when coupled with the manual gearbox. This helps to keep road tax down and means that it will be looked upon favourably by company car bosses looking to save a few pounds. They are powerful enough to cope with the demands of both motorway cruising and A-road overtaking and are well suited to the car. The higher powered 250CDI is certainly the one to choose if you can stretch to the £1500 increase over the lesser 220. Although we were only able to test the E-class on European roads, it offered a smooth and forgiving ride.

The overall prices of the car hadn’t been confirmed by the time we went to print but the E-class estate is expected to carry a £2000 premium over the standard saloon.

door, it shuts the boot with one press. It may seem an unnecessary luxury most of the time, but will come into its own when you are struggling with heaps of shopping.

This means you’ll pay around £30,000 for the entry-level model, but Mercedes has done its best to make sure that entry-level doesn’t mean basic. Several features are included in this basic price that you would normally expect to pay extra for.

Other standard features focus on safety. But the E-class goes beyond what might be expected and offers an impressive nine airbags and a claimed 12 new or improved driver assistance systems. This includes warning systems that keep you from drifting out of your lane on the motorway, alert you when you are too close to the car in front and highlight when there is something in the car’s blind spot.

One which could seem indulgent is the button that closes the boot lid. Located on the underside of the

For those for whom money is no object, the ultimate, performance version, E63 AMG estate could be the only car you could ever need when it joins the range next year. It carries an awesome 6.2 -litre engine under its bonnet and gets to 62mph in just 4.6 seconds, combining performance with practicality. Thankfully it doesn’t come with the trappings of style normally associated with a supremely fast car, and remains subtly elegant. Only those in the know will be able to mark it out from the standard car at first glance, which only adds to its appeal. The expected £75,000 price tag is the one thing that mars its otherwise excellent offering.

Watch This! Will you buy a wristwatch for your significant other this Christmas? Have you ever wondered who invented the watch and why we’ve ended up wearing timepieces on our wrists?

Until clocks which were small enough to be carried were invented, sundials were the only portable timepieces! Clocks were heavy because they were driven by weights. But in the 15th century the mainspring was invented in Germany. This is a spiral spring of metal ribbon that is the power source in mechanical timepieces. Originally mainsprings were invented as a lock mechanism but as many locksmiths also made clocks it was only a matter of time before they saw the potential. Peter Henlein, a German locksmith, is often cited as the inventor of the pocket watch in 1511 but many historians dispute this. Lots of clockmakers in Germany were producing miniature timepieces during that period and there is very little evidence that Henlein was the first. Originally pocket watches were worn around the neck like a pendant, had no glass face and only an hour hand. Glass faces came in around 1610 when men began wearing these timepieces in their top pockets. For women, clock-pendants remained popular until

the beginning of the 20th century. The first clocks were not very accurate. They were affected by everything from motion to the weather and could be as much as several hours out! Not much good if you had an appointment to keep. When Robert Hooke and Christiaan Huygens invented the balance spring in 1657 accuracy increased to within ten minutes a day; a huge improvement which led to the addition of the minute hand in 1700. The balance spring was still sensitive to temperature but in 1765 Pierre Le Roy produced a bi-metallic one which compensated for fluctuations. This was followed in 1785 by lever escapement which helped to keep the motion of the timepiece constant even if jarred. By 1850 watches were being mass produced but only ladies wore them as they were considered somewhat unmanly. This changed with World War I when soldiers began to wear them so they could check the time even when their hands were full.

Nowadays most people own and wear a wristwatch Choose the perfect watch and, like the clocks and Is the recipient formal or casual or pocket might they need two watches, one watches of old, for work and one for relaxing? they have What size are they? Wheel Deals In the run up to Christmas dealer showrooms are empty because people have other priorities so this is a great time of year to grab yourself a car bargain. IF you’ve read our previous articles you probably know what type of car you want and whether you’d prefer petrol, diesel, LPG, a hybrid or even electric!

manoeuvre. If they won’t budge then be prepared to walk away. If you’re not being unreasonable the chances are you’ll get a phone call later agreeing to look at the sums again.

Whether you’re buying new or second -hand, now is the time to do your homework. The internet is a great place to do research. Check to see if there are similar vehicles available elsewhere and compare prices so you’ll be in a stronger position to haggle.

Buying online is cheaper as there are fewer overheads for an online vendor but many people prefer to buy from a real person. It does no harm to print off online quotes though and ask the dealer to get as close to them as possible.

Test drive. Make sure that the car you’ve chosen on paper lives up to expectations. I once set my heart on a particular super- mini only to discover I couldn’t stand the noise of the engine. A rethink meant I ended up paying a little extra for a sound I could live with! If you’re buying second hand and you’re not terribly knowledgeable take a car-savvy friend with you who can point out potential problems and ask the dealer pertinent questions. In the current economic climate there will be room for price negotiation. It’s important to be realistic but have a top price in mind and don’t go above it. Make sure you talk to the manager. They have more authority to

28

If you’re a slick internet researcher see if you can uncover the invoice price of the car you have in mind i.e. the price the dealer would have paid for it. You can then try to get as close to that as possible though bear in mind dealers do have to eat and pay their mortgage too! Make it clear you’re there to make a deal and that you’re not just a browser. Dealers won’t want to let a serious potential customer go. If you already have a car the easiest option is to trade it in but make sure you get the best price possible. You will almost certainly get more for it if you sell it privately but the hassle

factor of this approach has to be taken into account. Get some freebies thrown in. Will the dealer insure the car? What about a free service or free car mats, or locking wheel nuts etc. This is your last chance to get the best deal possible. Finally talk finance. Car dealers will often offer you what appears to be an attractive finance option. Don’t dismiss

it as some finance deals are very good. But find out what the bottom line is. How much are you really going to pay for the car and how would this compare with an ordinary bank loan? Also check what happens if you want to trade the car in before the repayments finish. Then drive away happy in the knowledge that you got a wheel deal!

Food for Thought Can diet affect behaviour? Many of us know artificial additives can trigger hyperactivity and mood swings in some children but did you know there are other culprits, sometimes even staple foods such as wheat, milk and cheese. A child in a school for dyslexic children was put on a wheat-free diet for his digestive problems. Not only did his health improve he also made sudden progress in reading, writing and spelling. There were equal benefits for others in the school when a wheat-free diet was adopted for all its pupils. There is also growing evidence of improvements in the behaviour of some autistic children on a wheat-free and dairy-free diet. Parents and teachers are often surprised and relieved when overemotional, hyperactive or dreamy, disorganised children become calmer,

more controlled and able to listen and learn when they avoid cow’s milk, cheese, beef and gelatine. Some find that goat, sheep or buffalo alternatives do not have the same negative effect. More research is needed to help understand why this might happen. It could be due to an emotional reaction to certain foods, a leaky gut, a genetic factor or early weaning. However there definitely exists an inability to completely digest the wheat protein, gluten, and the milk protein, casein, due to insufficient amounts of the appropriate digestive enzymes. A deficiency in the lactase enzyme that digests the milk sugar, lactose, can cause digestive and mucus-forming problems. A variety of dairy-free milks, fortified with calcium, are healthy alternatives.

If you think your child’s health and behaviour are being affected by certain food groups, it is not an easy task to eliminate them but it can be achieved with effort and planning. It is worthwhile to note that wheat, casein, lactose and eggs are used widely in the food industry so it is wise to consult a professional before making any drastic changes. A dietician or nutritionist will offer advice if needed and a homeopath will prescribe appropriate remedies to relieve emotionally related food sensitivities, sleep and behavioural problems and many chronic illnesses such as eczema and asthma. Once you start sampling alternative foods you’ll be surprised at how many tasty ones there are, although your children may not at first agree with you! They may naturally resent avoiding what could be a favourite food but once they begin to feel better and get used to the new variety of foods, they’re usually too happy and healthy to care!

Discovering the true Tunisia

Ksar

For some warmth and sunshine to relieve the inevitably cold and wet British winter and early spring, why not try somewhere different, outside the relatively expensive Eurozone and not too far away? Tunisia has a lot to offer. From the delightfully secluded beaches of the ruggedly picturesque northern coast, like Raf Raf and Sidi Ali El Mekki, to stunning palm-fringed sands that slope gently into the warm waters of the Mediterranean around the idyllic Isle of Djerba, Tunisia’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. They are perfectly safe and ideally suited for a variety of exciting water sports, or simply stretching out and soaking up the splendid year-round sun. Then you have the Sahara, which isn't all shifting sands and endless dunes. Feel the exhilaration of sand-yachting, 4x4 adventures, camel treks or horse riding. Climb aboard the Red Lizard train passing through the canyons and over brooks before watching the seductive sunset in the mystifying backdrop. If you love to haggle, you'll adore the souks in the medinas or old towns. These are real living places where craftsmen can still be found practising their trade on the streets, and where each street represents a different craft. The best way to shop in this

entertaining maze is to wander aimlessly and stumble across whatever takes your fancy. With a choice ranging from top quality European-style restaurants to street-side stalls offering traditional Tunisian cuisine, the food in Tunisia is excellent. And there are many ‘3 Fourchette’ (five star quality) restaurants in and around each resort. Tunisia has a variety of hotels ranging from Dars and boutique hotel properties, to five star hotels, nearly 40 of which offer Thalassotherapy centres.
