My First Atlas of Animals

NORTH AMERICA

WOOF!

LET ME SAY...HELLO!

What’s your name? My name is Paco, I’m a little dog...but I don’t feel little! Inside me I carry the heart of a passionate explorer and my dream is to travel all over the world to visit my wild cousins.

I will cross all continents: Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania, America, from the tip of the extreme North to the farthest point in the South, to finally reach Antarctica - a whole frozen continent surrounded by the ocean. Then I will visit the Arctic, at the opposite pole of the Earth, where a frozen ocean is surrounded by continents.

I can’t wait to complete my atlas, by positioning each animal on the land where they live.

Hey, I’ve got an idea: let’s do this journey together! Travel with me in this wonderful wild adventure across the globe!

WAIT. WHERE ARE YOU GOING? THERE ARE TWO SURPRISES FOR YOU, BEFORE WE TAKE OFF!

The first one is about this strange square: when you find it inside the book, ask an adult to frame it with the cell phone or the tablet: you will like what happens! The second one is on the last page of the book: have a look at it before we start!

AFRICA

Africa is mostly covered with savannah, where the largest animals in the world live. To the North, there is a vast hot desert, the Sahara, whereas in the central part are the thick rainforests. There are also really tall mountains, like Kilimanjaro, and many lakes. Africa also hosts the longest river in the world: the Nile.

RHINOCEROS

The tip of its nose features two horns of different sizes, that grow throughout its life and are made of the same components as hair and nails.

LION

It is a large feline that lives in the savannah. It sleeps for many hours a day because hunting is a job left to the lionesses, which captures enough prey to feed the entire pack.

CHEETAH

It is the fastest animal on Earth. It runs as fast as a car, using its claws to get purchase on the ground and its long tail to maintain balance.

EUROPE

Europe boasts a wide variety of environments: there are important mountain ranges, such as the Alps and the Caucasus, then vast flat lands that were once covered with woods, and plenty of coasts. Many species of animals live in this continent to which we need to add many birds who come over here from remote parts of the world during the hot season to lay their eggs.

FOX

It’s smart and fast when hunting mice, thanks to its ability to detect sounds and scents from a long distance.

DEER

It lives in flat lands and mountains covered by woods. The males have long antlers similar to tree branches, which fall every winter and grow back each summer.

It is an impressive hunter. The black hairs on its ears enhance its hearing. Thanks to its exceptional sight, it can spot a small rodent from a long distance.

ASIA

Asia is the biggest continent and for this reason, it features many different types of environment: the frozen woods in the North, the impenetrable rainforests in the South, an immense desert in the center and many, many islands. In Asia we can also find the Himalayas, a range of incredible mountains, amongst which is Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.

PANDA

It is a black and white bear that eats bamboo leaves. It grasps them from the plant using a thumb-like bone, which means that it actually has six toes on each paw. It is a very lazy animal.

TIGER

RED-CROWNED CRANE

It has long legs that allow it to walk through the shallow waters of ponds, where it captures small aquatic animals. It is famous for its graceful dancing.

It is the largest feline in the world. It lives in the jungle, where it camouflages behind trees, thanks to its striped coat. It normally hunts at night.

OCEANIA

Oceania includes most of the islands in the Pacific Ocean. The biggest of them all is Australia where there are many dry and deserted areas. For this reason its inhabitants are mainly located along the coast line. Not too far from its coasts, the ocean waters host the Great Coral Reef, where we can find many species of colorful fish.

KANGAROO

It moves swiftly by making long leaps with its long legs. The babies spend a long time inside the mom’s marsupial pouch, where they are breastfed until they can eat.

KOALA

It climbs eucalyptus trees and eats its leaves. The babies spend six months inside the mom’s marsupial pouch and another six months hanging on her back.

WHITE SHARK

It has a white belly and a grey back, with a large fin on top. It is a fearsome predator, with its mouth counting 300 sharp triangular teeth positioned on seven rows.

NORTH AMERICA

North America is rich with lakes, forests, prairies and swamps. There are deserts and one of the hottest places on Earth, called the Death Valley. The Rocky Mountains range and the beautiful Hawaii islands are also part of this continent.

PUMA

It’s a solitary predator that normally hunts at the break of dawn or at sunset, and catches its prey by surprise by leaping on it. Its habitat is both up in the mountains and in the forests.

GRIZZLY BEAR

BEAVER

It’s a big bear that lives in the forest and eats roots and fruits. It is also a hunter and skilled salmon fisher. It spends winter hibernating in a protected place.

It loves living near rivers and it often blocks their flow by building dams with tree branches. This way, it forms a small lake, at the center of which it builds a partially underwater shelter.

SOUTH AMERICA

The largest part of South America is occupied by the Amazon forest, a habitat flourishing with many species of plants and rare animals. Running along the western side, the Andes is the longest mountain range in the world. South America also hosts the Angel Falls, the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall above ground.

TOUCAN

It lives in the forest and features a big colorful beak that it uses to pick fruit. It is not very good at flying, because its wings are quite small.

JAGUAR

It lives a solitary life, hiding amongst the trees in the jungle. It attacks any animal in its way, often by jumping on it from a rock or a tree branch above.

SLOTH

It is a slow, lazy animal that spends its day hanging from a tree branch in the rainforest. It mainly eats leaves, which it takes a month to digest.

ANTARCTICA

Also called South Pole, Antarctica is a vast continent surrounded by the ocean and almost completely covered in ice. As it never rains there, it is considered a cold desert. It is constantly swept by strong icy winds and the temperature remains low; that’s why there are no plants and not many animals can live there.

LEOPARD SEAL

It has dark spots all over its body that recall a leopard’s fur and, like a leopard, it is a great predator. It attacks penguins both out at sea and on the ice.

EMPEROR PENGUIN

It is the biggest species of penguin. Although it’s a bird, it can’t fly. The female lays just one egg that is hatched by the father by keeping it warm under its belly for 2 months.

OUR TRAVEL BUDDIES

Here they are! These are some of the wonderful animals that inhabit our planet: big and small mammals, fish and birds. Tear them off the page here along with the pedestals and assemble them so that they can stand upright and you can place them on the continent where they live. Check the background color of the single animal that helps you match it with the right location.
