Director Letter

A LETTER FROM THE

DIRECTOR The 2019-2020 school year has been an unprecedented year across the world, and the city of Nashville has been no exception. In March of 2020 our city was hit by a devastating tornado and our schools were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While we have suffered some setbacks as a city, we could not be prouder of the efforts made by our Academies of Nashville and MNPS family. As you will see in this report, food boxes, technology, personal protective equipment, and so much more have been deployed out to support the families and students of metro schools. We also have many successes to celebrate. The Career Exploration Fair reached its 11th year of existence and welcomed over 5,500 ninth grade students from across MNPS through the door of the Music City Center on November 15th, 2019. I am also pleased to announce that we piloted our new pre-apprenticeship program, Career Launch, in partnership with the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. 9th grade students from three schools, Pearl Cohn Entertainment Magnet, Maplewood High School, and McGavock High School were invited to participate in the program that matched career professionals with their aptitudes in Healthcare, Electrical Sciences, and Culinary Arts. We expect great things from this program as it progresses into the future. We, like many others, pivoted to the virtual space and held our first ever Academies of Nashville Awards via Zoom. Additionally, we are so pleased to say that Metro Nashville Public Schools officially welcomed a new Director of Schools, Dr. Adrienne Battle, a lifelong member of the MNPS family. Lastly, I have announced my retirement as of December 31st, 2020, and therefore this is my final Letter from the Director. I want to express my sincerest joy as serving as the Director of the Academies of Nashville for the past 5 years. I have watched this program grow from the tiny seed of an idea we had at Glencliff High School in the 1990s to the fourteenyear success that it is now. The road was not always easy, but it was always worth the work. We have built a program that will continue to prepare our students for college and career well into the future. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be a part of this program. Thank you to all our amazing founding partners, business partners, teachers, administrators, and students that continue the work. I know that the future of the Academies of Nashville is bright thanks to every one of you.

2019-2020

ACADEMIES OF NASHVILLE AT A GLANCE The 2019-2020 school year was a year unlike any other in the history of the Academies of Nashville. In March, our city suffered a devastating tornado, followed shortly by the closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Our schools and the city of Nashville rallied around our students, staff, and families to assist in recovery efforts wherever possible. Thousands of food boxes, hundreds of units of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and other necessary items were deployed to support our students and our city. We are thankful to every single person that made these relief efforts possible, and proud of our school’s efforts to assist our students and families. These events fundamentally altered what a “typical” year would look like for the Academies of Nashville, so as you go through this report you may see a different focus for our schools than in year’s past. The purpose of this annual report is to tell our story, and this year’s story is unique. We thank you for reading and supporting the Academies of Nashville in this unprecedented year.
