Reflecting on accomplishments this year: This year, our focus was on the long-term development and success of our students. All students were challenged academically and were prepared for success in college, employment and participation in the global economy. We partnered with the business community and the Donelson Coalition to provide one-on-one interviews and feedback to 650 of our freshman students at our professional skills fair. A whole-child approach allowed us to work individually with each student, encouraging academic achievement. We championed those that were excelling and met with students who were failing classes to set goals. What others are saying: Students heard from guest speakers on a variety of topics such as relationship building, acquiring soft skills and fine-tuning leadership qualities.

Reflecting on accomplishments this year: The freshman academy music cohort, better known as Caldwell’s Crew, is comprised of 14 freshman who fought to have their music heard. They are known for their incredible voices, which drew them to select Pearl-Cohn as their first-choice school. The students wrote, recorded and produced “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, a song in honor of Black History month and performed it in a #NoWeapons campaign addressing gun youth violence in the Nashville area. What others are saying: It was exciting to see the freshman academy students rise to their potential. As a result, we now have a freshman choir cohort and a freshman leadership team that has successfully hosted several activities and has pushed our faculty curriculum planning to new heights.

WHITES CREEK HIGH SCHOOL Favorite quote / motto: A bridge to success – guiding students on their journey to college and career. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: The freshman academy has been intentional in its efforts to provide students early exposure to college and career opportunities. Ninety-seven percent of the freshman class attended a tour of a four-year university, local community college or military base. Students utilized their YouScience results to make informed decisions on which trips to attend. The academy also formed a partnership with Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee to host an experiential STEM day where 100 percent of freshmen were exposed to different career options within the STEM field. What others are saying: Development of a student-focused freshman advocacy system has helped shape the culture of the academy. This structure has enabled the academy to systematically reduce student academic failure and build the necessary relationships between students and staff to ensure a seamless transition for students from middle school to high school. We have increased support and interventions for freshman by 150 percent over the previous school year and have decreased behavior referrals by more than 50 percent.

Reflecting on accomplishments this year: My main duty as an academy coach is to ensure experiential learning for all students. This year, two students were allowed to job shadow a partner at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center. Prior to dropping them off, one student was a bit skeptical of the opportunity but when I returned, they shared many stories about their wonderful experience. One student said, “Thank you for thinking of me, this was an opportunity of a lifetime.” At that moment, I realized it wasn’t just a job, but a platform to help shape futures. I see how daily affirmations and constant encouragement can change a student’s life. Last year, I had two students decide to quit school, so I made it a priority to pick them up every day and ensure they graduated. ACADEMY TEAM LEADER OF THE YEAR THERESA DIAZ, ACADEMY OF MEDICAL SCIENCE AND RESEARCH AT GLENCLIFF HIGH SCHOOL Favorite quote / motto: Never beaten, never tied. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: One of my proudest leadership-centered accomplishments has been to work with academy members and partners to build curriculum through project-based learning (PBL) and teacher mentoring throughout the year. This year, our academy celebrated the completion of an 11 week PBL with more than 200 students and seven theater performances based on the play, Inherit the Wind. I was excited to begin planning with a small group of academy teachers, which then grew to all faculty participating in co-teaching lessons and mini-professional development days in order to enable teacher-student relationship growth. Participation of all academies enabled student collaboration and the ability to learn from one another during student-run sessions. MATTHEW TRUWIT, ACADEMY OF ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT AT PEARL-COHN ENTERTAINMENT MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL Favorite quote / motto: History, by apprizing them of the past, will enable them to judge of the future. It will avail them of the experience of other times and other nations; it will qualify them as judges of the actions and designs of men; it will enable them to know ambition under every disguise it may assume; and knowing it to defeat its views. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: I am most proud of leading a complete structure and culture redesign of our academy. As both a teacher and academy lead, I recognize the value of time and the issues which may arise from lack of it during the school day. With this in mind, we strive to ensure all academy meetings have a clear, concise purpose and run efficiently. We intentionally designate more time to student interventions and professional development. The time recovered from these adjustments has allowed our academy to focus on strengthening the culture among teachers and the social-emotional practices emphasized with students. Our academy has the most exceptional education teachers of any academy, so we spend a significant amount of time designing ways to support our lowest-performing students’ academic needs. On the other hand, our academy also has the most advanced placement teachers schoolwide who are dedicated to pushing the limits of our most successful students. This prioritization has totally revitalized our academy and I am extremely proud to deem the academy a place where teachers feel valued and supported. What others are saying: Mr. Truwit and our team have created a more cohesive and connected culture among academy students. By creating more opportunities to recognize students for academic excellence, we have strengthened the bonds between students and teachers in our academy so that students are proud to be a part of the Academy of Entertainment Management. This pride has translated into what our students wear. Students wear signature apparel exclaiming their excitement to belong to the Academy of Entertainment Management. The apparel is yet another example of student culture revitalization so students are proud of the academy to which they belong.

BRITTANY EDMONDSON, ACADEMY OF NATIONAL SAFETY AND SECURITY TECHNOLOGIES AT STRATFORD STEM MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL Favorite quote / motto: There is power in saying yes to our students. Say yes to the student that has an interest in a specific area of law by contacting a former colleague or business partner to secure a job shadow opportunity or internship. Say yes to affirm the young female student that wants to reclaim her place as a leader. Say yes to the student that has an innovative approach to your classroom instruction. You should say yes because every student deserves a person that will champion them to their greatest potential. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: This year, I strived to increase access to early post- secondary opportunities for my students through industry certifications and dual credit. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: Being a Future Farmers of America (FFA) advisor is an accomplishment that fills me with pride. When I arrived in 2013, students looked at the FFA emblem painted on the wall and didn’t know what it meant. At the time, the chapter had been inactive for more than 20 years. By focusing on relationship building through an inclusive family atmosphere, we were aggressive in our efforts to reactivate our chapter. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: Understanding the academy model has helped me to lead. I whole-heartedly believe in this model, especially regarding student interventions. The smaller learning communities within the school allow staff to focus on students in need. Quarterly check-ins with students help our students strive for excellence. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: For the past two years, scores in AP Spanish language and culture have been top-ranked amongst all AP classes at McGavock. In addition, students passed the exam at a higher rate than any other AP subject in our school. What others are saying: Mr. Fisher wears his titles of department chair of world languages and bowling team coach proudly. Your problem may be modest, but if it challenges your curiosity and brings into play your inventive faculties, and if you solve it by your own means, you may experience the tension and enjoy the triumph of discovery. Such experiences at a susceptible age may create a taste for mental work and leave their imprint on mind and character for a lifetime. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: I am most proud of my professional development – our academy team and amazing opportunities have refined my teaching skillset beyond the knowledge acquired from daily interactions with students. I have created a culture where students feel comfortable seeking direction; fostering these relationships early in a student’s life is what school counseling is all about. What others are saying: Ms. Littlejohn is dedicated to the success of our students. She uses a whole-child approach to ensure students are on track for graduation and are comfortable in asking the uncomfortable and hard questions. She is a valued asset.

DEBORAH OSBORNE, ACADEMY OF ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT AT PEARL-COHN ENTERTAINMENT MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL Favorite quote / motto: Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: It has been my mission to help students identify skills needed to be successful and show how these skills transfer beyond life after high school. To help students overcome barriers, I use problem-solving exercises that allow them to examine issues and discuss feasible solutions. I also work with our academy coach to identify experiential learning opportunities for student success. What others are saying: Ms. Osborne listens with an attentive ear to both academic and personal challenges. When I was going through my transgender transformation, she offered unbiased advice and helped connect me to a therapist who was instrumental throughout the process. # AO N 2 0 1 8

This externship project model focused on Deloitte’s best practices of auditing, risk management and interviewing. Guest speakers taught students effective interviewing techniques and how to discover fraudulent activity. Students experienced simulations centered on real world conflict resolutions, risk management and employee fraud. Deloitte made this project successful by providing resources that helped students discover their passions.

THE PARTHENON AND THE ACADEMY OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION AT MAPLEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Reflecting on accomplishments this year: Through this partnership, students explored ways to connect museum exhibit offerings with student interests. The project inspired new levels of discovery, learning and personal connections between students and museums.

AEGIS SCIENCE CORPORATION AND THE AEGIS SCIENCES CORPORATION ACADEMY OF LIFE SCIENCES AND LAW AT MCGAVOCK HIGH SCHOOL Reflecting on accomplishments this year: This year, Aegis Sciences Corporation provided job shadowing opportunities and also expanded their engagement by hosting an externship that focused on an animal science pathway. This project required seniors to create a real-life animal health challenge for life science and law sophomores. Seniors worked in teams to design eight animal crime scenes with expertise from Aegis, where mock animals were fashioned to show subtle illness symptoms staged in areas with other clues. Sophomores cited evidence by using testing supplies provided by Aegis, and presented their findings to classmates and the community.

EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR SUSAN KESSLER, HUNTERS LANE HIGH SCHOOL Favorite quote / motto: I would rather regret that I did something, than regret that I didn’t. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: Nearly 80 percent of the 2017 graduating class was accepted into the college of their choice. Our dual credit enrollment has increased 115 percent from the previous year, and we increased our industry certification enrollment during the same period by 17 percent. These accomplishments give students an advantage over other job seeking candidates and college students because it shows they are maximizing their opportunities in high school before they take the next step after graduation. Established partnerships with our business partners are incredibly fulfilling for both the students and the partners. What others are saying: Dr. Kessler is committed to the work of the academies and empowers academy coaches and teachers to make things happen for students.

ROBBIN WALL, MCGAVOCK HIGH SCHOOL Favorite quote / motto: Happiness is the key to life. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: I am proud to have led McGavock from a level 1 school to a level 5 school, recognized for its academic achievements. We are the only school in the district to acquire two consecutive national academy model rankings, and we received national recognition at the National Career Academy Coalition conference as the best academy high school in the country. What others are saying: Mr. Wall is an excellent academy model at McGavock. He welcomes many tour groups who are exploring the academy model, and is always willing to answer questions.

JILL PITTMAN, OVERTON HIGH SCHOOL Favorite quote / motto: The road to success is always under construction. Reflecting on accomplishments this year: I am proud that the academies provide growth opportunities for students and school leaders. My team has seen an exponential increase in the number and percentage of students earning industry certifications. Our Health Science Academy has experienced a three-fold increase in pass rates on a variety of exams. Over the past few years, Overton has earned rave reviews from school visitors because of student testimonials told with conviction and pride. The comments and ratings we have earned reflect the kind of positive culture that the academies fuel at our school. What others are saying: Dr. Pittman creates a culture of collaboration among students and teachers. She listens to and values the opinions of stakeholders and supports the academy model at the school. # AO N 2 0 1 8

CHAMBER’S CHOICE AWARD In 2010, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce began conversations with stakeholders about creating an awards program recognizing outstanding educators and business partnerships in the Academies of Nashville. While there were many recognition programs in the schools for students, there was a need to recognize the hard work and contributions of adults, too, including academy educators and business partners across the district who were bringing the academy model alive for young people. From that idea, the Academies of Nashville Awards program was created. To create such an awards program, the Nashville Chamber approached a number of potential sponsors to help underwrite the event. Altria, which a year earlier acquired one of Nashville’s major employers, U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co., agreed to support the new awards program. Altria and its family of companies have a long history of supporting organizations and programs that help students succeed academically, make good decisions and prepare for future careers. By supporting the Academies of Nashville Awards, Altria wanted to join others in recognizing the success of the Academies and the invaluable contributions that teachers, administrators, local universities, businesses and other community partners have made to prepare young people for careers in high-demand fields. Altria and Deloitte’s title sponsorship that first year meant hundreds of educators and business partners were able to join Nashville Mayor Karl Dean in celebrating the inaugural Academies of Nashville Awards on May 12, 2011. That year, and since that time, many of Nashville’s leading companies have stepped up to help sponsor the event. In the AON Awards’ eighth and final year in its current form, Altria is a deserving recipient of the 2018 Chamber’s Choice Award — for making the AON Awards possible from the very beginning.

ACADEMY OF THE YEAR THE FORD ACADEMY OF BUSINESS AND INNOVATION AT GLENCLIFF HIGH SCHOOL Our academy’s recent entrepreneur event inspired students to create business ideas for a competition at the start of the school year. The winning group has been in operation since, selling healthy fruit and yogurt alternatives to students, staff and business partners. In addition, the academy has partnered with the school’s Best Buddies program for a project-based learning event that explores how different relationships impact understanding. This academy is committed to providing high-quality project-based learning experiences for students.

THE ACADEMY OF AVIATION AND TRANSPORTATION AT MCGAVOCK HIGH SCHOOL This academy pathway offers dual credit courses with Middle Tennessee State University’s Business and Aerospace program, which allows students to attain up to six college credit hours. Through our hands-on mentorship program, we were able to decrease the number of at risk students by 60 percent. In addition, the Cummins Environmental Challenge encouraged students to develop sustainable solutions for real-world environmental problems.

THE ACADEMY OF ENTERTAINMENT MANAGEMENT AT PEARL-COHN ENTERTAINMENT MAGNET HIGH SCHOOL Our greatest accomplishment is the development of a low-turnover, highly cohesive group of experienced, committed and supportive professionals who model the social and emotional learning skills emphasized to our students. Over the last two years, we have dramatically increased student interventions. Our academy is committed to identifying and monitoring academic progress of academically-challenged students to improve success outcomes. As a result, we have witnessed firsthand the effects of compassionate, supportive and goaloriented conversations with students. Our efforts have created a positive academic culture around student achievement.
