Dr. Bridget Leonard

BE POWERFUL ON PURPOSE & LIVE WITH INTENTION

Dr. Bridget Leonard’s transparency, courage, and motivation empowers people to live their best life and be powerful on purpose. An award-winning nursing leader with over 25 years of experience, Dr. Leonard currently serves as President of the American Nurses Association-Michigan and a Nursing Professor at Wayne County Community College. She was the Chief Nursing Officer of a twice designated Magnet freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital.

As CEO of Bridget Leonard Enterprises LLC, she tailors her efforts to help others reach their highest potential through mentoring, professional development, and maximizing their speaker skills. Dr. Leonard serves as life coach and advisor to many who are on a mission to walk in their purpose, authentically and unapologetically. She is committed to helping clients identify their strategic goals, tear down barriers, and develop strategies to make their dreams a reality.

“I’m a Survivor!” says Dr. Leonard. “That is the simplest way to describe how I got to be where I am today with God and my family in my corner. My journey was anything but a fairytale, I was destined to fail, and the odds were stacked against me, but I was determined to win.”

From motivating the masses to conducting team building workshops and creating professional advancement opportunities, Dr. Leonard is leaving a mark on hearts and minds as she delivers strategies to succeed and nuggets of wisdom.

MOVING FORWARD

A teen mom and high school dropout, Dr. Leonard “got sick and tired of being sick and tired” so she decided to change the trajectory of her life.

“I resolved to push myself to greatness. I always enjoyed helping others, but being a mom of four at the time, I needed to find a career that could ensure financial stability. I started out as a nursing assistant which is where my love affair with nursing began, and I continued studying until I

12 VBD Magazine HEALTH & WELLNESS

successfully advanced to my doctoral degree. My degrees helped in my career advancement rising from a Certified Nursing Assistant to Chief Nursing Officer, and I have no regrets.

Dr. Leonard is certified as an Advanced Nurse Executive and has a certification in Rehabilitation Nursing. She has received several leadership awards, including Tenet Hero and MI Chronicles Woman of Excellence.

“My fuel came from those who thought I would never succeed - every day I tried harder to be a better version of myself than the day before. I live to make my 6 kids and 13 grandkids proud of me, while encouraging them to also be the best they can be.”

BRIDGET LEONARD ENTERPRISES, LLC

Bridget Leonard Enterprises, LLC, offers life coaching, speaker coaching, leadership, and motivational workshops. In addition, the company creates activities aimed at energizing healthcare professionals, primarily nurses, to raise the bar and be a part of the solution.

“I wanted to create a company that would allow me to showcase all my skills and talents to help others be the best they could be while generating an income.”

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Dr. Leonard is a Lupus warrior and suicide survivor. Throughout the year Bridget spends time promoting Lupus Awareness. She and her teen daughter are Lupus warriors and created the first teen Lupus support group in Michigan. Bridget is passionate and dedicated to increasing Lupus Awareness not only locally, but also nationally by speaking at conferences.

“My definition of health and wellness is simple—do the things that put a smile on your face. Too many times we get caught up trying to please our employers, family, and friends, so much so that we lose focus of the most important person—ourselves.

“Dealing with all those issues will result in stress, poor diets, decreased exercise,

and fatigue all of which contribute to a variety of healthcare disparities. Placing ourselves first allows us to reconsider the bad things, focus on the good, and refill our cup so we can choose to pour into others without them draining the life out of us.

“Three rules I live by to ensure I practice a healthy lifestyle are (1) Be powerful on purpose, (2) Say no, and (3) Do what makes me happy.”

LET’S TALK

“Dr. B’s Let’s Talk Grown Folks Style Podcast was established during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period when we were on lockdown, I saw numerous pod-

casts and live streams that were focused on what I consider fluffy, cute topics. I wanted to create a safe place for adults to discuss topics everyone thinks about, but no one wants to talk about publicly.”

Some of the topics discussed on the podcast are:

• Light Skin vs Dark Skin

• H.I.G.H. Feedback About Cannabis/ CBD

• These Jobs Ain’t Loyal - What’s Plan B?

• Raising Black Sons in 2021

• Pros & Cons of Being a Strong Black Woman

• Struggling With Your Identity

WRITING FROM THE HEART

Dr. Leonard is a co-author in Dr. Cheryl Wood’s bestselling anthology, Women Crushing Mediocrity. In this book, 40 women shared their stories to show readers that they too can persevere and overcome despite life’s challenges.

“In writing this book, I learned that I am stronger than I ever realized. Putting a snippet of my life on paper made my situation real and allowed me to start healing. For years I hid behind my success, yet this experience made me realize that being transparent is not only therapeutic for me, but it allows me to help others begin their healing process.”

BLURB FOR WOMEN CRUSHING MEDIOCRITY

One thing is for sure – every woman

has a story of crushing mediocrity that deserves to be told! And Women Crushing Mediocrity is created to give you an exclusive opportunity to "hear" some of those personal stories of women who refuse to be held hostage to ordinary. I celebrate each of the co-authors who have stepped up to share their stories as a part of this transformative project because they acknowledge that their story is "about them but not for them."

There is truly unparalleled power in sharing your story to bless someone else! Women Crushing Mediocrity is by women for women. As you immerse yourself into each of the stories, I hope it serves as a potent reminder that you are destined for greatness and that you owe it to yourself to step out into the deep to explore what else is possible for you. It is my hope

that Women Crushing Mediocrity will reignite the fire within you to be AMAZING – which is your birthright – not just ordinary and to develop a commitment to crush anything that stands in your way of creating a life that you're in love with.

MESSAGE TO WOMEN

“It’s ok to not be ok! I want women to realize they are not alone in the issues they face and that the issues they face do not have to stagnate them. I want them to know that anything is possible with determination, drive, and a thirst for more. I want them to always be powerful on purpose.”

NEXT CHAPTER

“I see myself teaching nursing, giving motivational and leadership speeches, and being involved with organizations dedicated to improving the nursing profession, evaluating nursing programs as an ACEN evaluator, and increasing Lupus awareness every chance I get.

“My passion is helping others get out of their own way to reach their fullest potential in their personal and/or professional life. I believe that everyone can reach their goals, but they must believe that it is possible; and I am here to help them make their goals become reality.”

A LEADER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Jennifer Gilchrest

MAKING REAL ESTATE DREAMS COME TRUE

“The COVID-19 pandemic fueled changes and accelerated digitization across many sectors, including the real estate industry,” says Jennifer Gilchrest. “We understand the changing landscape for buyers and sellers in the real estate market. Those who interact with us know that they can count on us to provide solutions to their needs.”

Jennifer Gilchrest is the founder of Platinum RE-CO, a rapidly expanding real estate brokerage, Team Lead of Gilchrest Platinum Producers Luxury Team and GPP Development, a real estate development company based in Newcastle, Oklahoma. A Life Coach, Mother, Gigi, Friend, Influencer, and Leader, Jennifer applies the same philosophy to everyone she comes in contact with, ensuring they feel valued and accepted. Her approach to work and life is simple: YOU come first.

Jennifer does not measure success through achievements or awards but by the satisfaction of her clients, coworkers and loved

THE MOST REWARDING PART OF THE REAL ESTATE BUSINESS IS HELPING HOMEOWNERS MOVE INTO THE HOME OF THEIR DREAMS, ESTABLISH, AND BUILD GENERATIONAL WEALTH, AND HELPING THEM SELL THEIR CURRENT PROPERTIES WITH LITTLE TO NO STRESS.

ones. Constant communication through every interaction and personalized care is at the forefront of her business. Through her fearless, bold, and courageous strength to dominate anything and everything she comes across, Jennifer has transformed her dreams into reality and hopes to do the same for everyone she meets.

VBD Magazine had the opportunity to speak with the trailblazer to learn more about the inspiration behind starting her real estate brokerage company, the services offered, the steps taken to ensure she has the best real estate agents, and the most rewarding aspect of being in the business.

VBD Magazine ENTREPRENEURSHIP 16

VBD: Why did you start a real estate brokerage company?

JENNIFER: I’ve always had a passion for business and focusing on long-term goals, life challenges, and overcoming obstacles that help me develop in life. I spent the majority of my 20s and 30s working in a variety of sales departments and job roles that helped spark these entrepreneurship qualities within me. Having been in the real estate industry for about six years now, experiencing the pandemic definitely pushed me to move past barriers and pivot in the real estate business which started the foundation of Platinum RE-CO.

One mark I try my best to leave on people is my leadership quality, followed by compassion. No matter where you are, what you’re doing, or who you’re interacting with, you must always carry yourself with the same leadership traits you show your clients and that’s through your unwavering courage. Courage to believe in myself and others, courage to carry myself with confidence, courage to execute and accomplish my goals, and most importantly the courage to be sympathetic and understanding of all situations.

VBD: Why did you establish Platinum RE-CO?

JENNIFER: I established Platinum RECO because I wanted to start a legacy of well-trained and kind-hearted agents ready to become servants to those in need of their services. The client experience is something that is crucial in our industry. I believe that for clients to receive extraordinary treatment, the agents must also feel like they have a purpose in what they’re doing. My goal is for every agent and employee of Platinum RE-CO to feel like a part of a community that cares about their existence and overall growth in their business and personal lives.

VBD: What services does Platinum RE-CO offer?

JENNIFER: Platinum RE-CO caters to every level in the real estate industry, including residential, commercial, investors, relocators, and luxury. Platinum

RE-CO also has a Property Management Division, Real Estate School, Coaching Program and Transaction Coordinator Division. We are currently on our way to becoming the most equipped brokerage in Oklahoma and we’re excited to see how much we’ll continue to grow within the next couple of years.

VBD: What is the most rewarding aspect of the real estate business?

JENNIFER: The most rewarding part of the real estate business is helping homeowners move into the home of their dreams, establish, and build generational wealth, and helping them sell their current

VBD Magazine ENTREPRENEURSHIP 17
I BELIEVE THAT IN ORDER FOR CLIENTS TO RECEIVE EXTRAORDINARY TREATMENT, THE AGENTS MUST ALSO FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE A PURPOSE IN WHAT THEY’RE DOING.

properties with little to no stress. That is only achievable by truly understanding the wants and needs of each client on a personal level. Each client is more than just a transaction, it’s a relationship built from trust, and I couldn't be more grateful for the abundant amount of support and trust I’ve received thus far.

VBD: How do you ensure that you have the best real estate agents?

JENNIFER: Something we look for in Platinum RE-CO agents is their level of dedication and consistency. It’s not easy to wake up every day and feel motivated to learn something new, problem-solve issues, and balance your everyday life while giving it 100%. Platinum RE-CO is here to serve our clients by consistently pushing our agents to reach their full potential through knowledge and mentorship. As long as the agent is willing to show up and learn, Platinum RE-CO will continue to be here and guide them along the way in every way possible.

VBD: What is the most difficult part of being a real estate agent?

JENNIFER: The misconception that not using a licensed realtor would save people money. Oftentimes, I hear tragic stories where sellers and buyers end up in a court case due to not disclosing proper or required information, or even due to disclosing unnecessary information. There are so many ways to stumble or harm one

another through the process and unfortunately, most consumers have a “general understanding” of how the process works whereas we have worked to be considered experts in the field. Purchasing one of life’s largest investments should be done with a licensed real estate agent and not something to be taken lightly.

VBD: What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who just received a real estate license?

JENNIFER: Continue looking forward. Ensure that where you are investing your time and money has a great Return on Investment. Build a plan and work with the intention to achieve it through consistent watching and planning. Adjust your sails to continue overcoming obstacles and learn to master what you like to do most so you can set yourself apart from the competition.

VBD: How do you ensure your business thrives during challenging times?

JENNIFER: I feel like I have an intuition of where my business will be in 6 months, 1 year, and even 5 years from now because of the solid foundation we have been building at Platinum RE-CO. There’s always some new adaptation we must overcome, but when you focus on serving others the rest will follow and that helps me stay grounded.

VBD: What’s next for you?

JENNIFER: I’m not sure what’s to come next in my career. However, I know that I am prepared for whatever life throws at me and I have faith in the process. The amazing team I have at Platinum RE-CO has definitely allowed me to enjoy some of my personal time and focus more on my family. Becoming more focused on my role as a life mentor and real estate coach would definitely be ideal for someone in my shoes who has overcome a lot in life, but whatever my next calling is, I’m sure it will be filled with purpose and abundance.

LIVING HER DREAMS

Iris Wright

SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR & BESTSELLING AUTHOR

From an early age, Iris Wright had always been enthusiastic about helping others and knew that she would be an entrepreneur. After working as a health care professional for several years, Iris opened Caring Hearts Senior Living, a home care agency. However, faced with staff shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic, Iris closed the business, changed strategy, and established Caring Hearts Telecare, a virtual and hybrid home care service.

A serial entrepreneur, Iris also founded Caring Hearts Birthing Services, Caring Hearts Foundation, Wright’s Virtual Services, Wrights Holdings, and Real Talk with Iris, a podcast.

“As an entrepreneur I take extraordinary pride in taking care of small businesses and have a great passion for the seniors and the people in our community,” says Iris. “I have worked extremely hard to find a way to make home care more affordable for our seniors and for them to receive quality care. In this journey I will continue to grow and achieve my highest level of success.”

Iris is passionate not only about advocating for our senior population, but also about writing. A bestselling author, Iris loves to share her stories about overcoming trials, women empowerment, and strategies used on her entrepreneurial journey. With those personal insights no wonder her favorite quote is “When a woman finds her strength, she finds her identity.”

In 2022, Iris was nominated for Master Coach and Women of Influence in the ACHI Awards and for the Elite Businesswomen Award in 2023. She was given the Phenomenal Woman Award from My Sisters Keepers. “My award and nominations remind me of why I continue to champion causes every day, speaking for the people who cannot, and offering needed services.”

The visionary took a break from her busy schedule to chat with VBD Magazine

20 VBD Magazine ENTREPRENEURSHIP

FAMILY LIFE

Iris has been married to Deshawn for the past 19 years, and they have a blended family of 6 children and 3 grandchildren. She and her husband moved from Delaware, their hometown, to Newport News, Virginia, some 4 years ago because they wanted change.

WRIGHT’S VIRTUAL SERVICES

In early 2019, after reading Steve Harvey’s book Jump, Iris decided to quit her job and take the leap into entrepreneurship. “I took all the skills that I had and used it to build multiple streams of income in Wright’s Virtual Services. We have a remote call center, and we offer tax services, notary and signing agent services, business funding, and legal services.”

CARING HEARTS TELECARE

In August 2022, Iris opened Caring Hearts Telecare to offer quality home care services twenty-four hours a day. “We realized that a lot of our clients were suffering from depression so when the aide leaves they would stop caring for themselves. I

wanted a way to be able to help people stay independent.”

THE GIFT TO WRITE

“I write because it is healing for me. My purpose for writing is to share my story to help others and to raise awareness of injustices. After my first anthology, Words of Wisdom for the Heart and Soul, Volume II: Lessons, Insights, and Guidance from Leaders of Influence was published, I just kept writing. This book is an Amazon Best Seller.

“I co-authored What is Fearless Living? which was launched in January 2023. Currently, I am involved in ten anthologies including my anthology Injustice. In addition, I have upcoming releasesGirl Don’t Count Yourself Out (Mothers Edition), Destiny Catalyst, Audacity To Be Empowered, Worthy Women, Joy 365, Chain Breaking Experience, and Injustice My Story. My goal is to become a leader for injustice and to be a successful author, speaker, and business owner.”

FACING CHALLENGES

“When I established Caring Hearts Senior Living, I had to learn the back office of home care, Medicaid billing, and other systems. Medicaid reimbursement in Virginia is low and sometimes it takes the insurance companies months to pay us. I noticed that I was making little to no profit by contracting with Medicaid and that became very stressful. Also, I was not able to pay my staff well. With those challenges I decided to close the business and figure out another way to provide innovative home care and stay profitable.”

WHAT’S NEXT

“I am doing everything that I enjoy. For this year, I am focusing on growing my companies, writing, and speaking on injustice. Injustice has been a big part of my life since I was eighteen. I have decided that I will not allow injustice to take over my life but to help raise awareness that will hopefully cause changes in our communities. Also, I am learning real estate investing so that will be a focus for 2023.”

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT

W. Mason Dunn

CONNECTING WITH OTHERS THROUGH CHRISTIAN FICTION

W. Mason Dunn is a bestselling author and writing consultant who is passionate about spreading the Gospel through her writing. A devout and God-fearing Christian, Author Dunn uses her mastery and art of writing to give testimony to God’s love for us. She has published 5 Christian fiction books and 2 Bible Study journals, with more books in the works.

Author Dunn is a highly trained and accomplished human resources professional. Prior to writing full time, she was employed at Florida A&M University for eight years. Before joining the staff at the university, she worked for 12 years as a higher education counselor for the military while traveling with her husband before he retired from the Marine Corps after 20 years of service. Her personal and professional experiences heavily influenced and contributed to her literary works inspiring her to document what God has done for her through the good times, the bad times, and the ugly times.

During her interview with VBD Magazine, the celebrated author talks about her love for writing, the inspiration behind her novel Positions of Compromise, her advice for aspiring authors, and what comes next. Add this author to your TBR list, you’ll be glad you did.

THE CALL TO WRITE

In her younger years, Author Dunn participated in many writing and speech competitions. She traveled to her home state of Louisiana participating in numerous contests, winning many of them. One of her most memorable competitions was the “Voice of Democracy Contest”. She was originally interested in journalism until she took her first accounting class in college, which catapulted her career in a different direction. However, inspired by her sister, award-winning playwright and screenwriter, the late Judi Ann Mason (Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, A Different World, and I'll Fly Away), Author Dunn never lost her love and passion for writing.

“Writing is what I love to do. I crave it. Writing is the way I get the stories from

my head to the paper. And when I’m not writing, I’m thinking about writing. My purpose for writing is to show my readers that God cares about every part of our lives. I find my inspiration through my own personal life experiences as well as those close to me. I believe that each one of us has a unique story to tell.

“After the death of my parents, my oldest sister and her husband took me into their home and raised me as if I was their own child. I’m grateful for the sacrifices they made for me. They picked up the mantle my parents had left behind and taught me about God’s love. They also lived a godly life in front of me.

“After graduating college, I got married and traveled the United States with my husband, who was in the Marine Corps. That’s where I first became aware that some people did not grow up in such a loving environment. It is a combination of my childhood and real-word experiences that inspire me to write about God’s love and how it can absolutely change our lives.”

WRITING PROCESS

“I make time to write every day and take classes to hone my craft. I like to write amongst the clutter at the desk in my home office. But you can also find me with my feet tucked under the covers in my bedroom late at night or at my favorite spot on the couch in the living room.

“I begin with an outline which sets the framework for the basic plot of the story. However, there is always a possibility that this will change along the way. Once the outline is complete, I create the scene and sequel of each plot point. Then it’s time to bring the story to life with setting, conflict, action, and suspense.”

INSPIRATION BEHIND POSITIONS OF COMPROMISE

Set in Bossier City, Louisiana, Positions of Compromise by W. Mason Dunn tells a gripping story of faith about three remarkable women, Loretta, Dani, and Sasha. Several themes run throughout the story—love, sexual harassment, forgiveness, restoration, and redemption.

“In 2005, while writing a thesis for my graduate program at The University of Oklahoma, I researched the effectiveness of sexual harassment training and learned then that the training is basically ineffective without accountability. I was not very surprised to learn that many companies are still passing the buck as it relates to accountability. Without accountability, perpetrators are allowed to repeat behavior again and again. Our Heavenly Father loves His children, sees their needs, and clearly states we are to ‘Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.’ Psalm 82:3 (KJV)

I BEGIN WITH AN OUTLINE WHICH SETS THE FRAMEWORK FOR THE BASIC PLOT OF THE STORY. HOWEVER, THERE IS ALWAYS A POSSIBILITY THAT THIS WILL CHANGE ALONG THE WAY.

“The bottom line for many companies is making a profit. And while I understand companies are in business to make money, I believe they also have a responsibility to take care of their staff. Positions of Compromise is taken from recent headlines and shines the light on the responsibility we have as Christians to keep the faith, not wavering in our beliefs, even in the workplace.

“I hope readers will be able to connect with the characters and their plight. I pray they will see that God cares about what they are experiencing, whether they are in an executive level, a mid-management level, or an entry level position.”

THE BLURB FOR POSITIONS OF COMPROMISE

Fifty-two-year-old Loretta Jenkins refuses to let age slow her down. She throws herself into her job as Human Resources Manager at Westcott Steel Building. Dubbed as “at-work-mom,” Loretta is drawn into two reluctant friendships: one with her assistant, Dani Ferguson; and another with Sasha McFadden, the Vice President’s receptionist.

Dani and her husband have been praying for another child for years. Her desperation for another child is wreaking havoc on her marriage and causing her to lose faith in God. Can she find a way to trust God and save her marriage?

Sasha had been living in her vehicle when she landed the job as a receptionist for the Vice President of Westcott Steel Buildings. She soon becomes the object of his sexual advances. Sasha is faced with making a wrenching decision: keep quiet or lose her job.

Even as Loretta is forced to take medical leave, she continues to work from home. When company information is leaked to the media, Loretta sets out to find the source of the leak. What she discovers is more than a breach of confidentiality, it is Positions of Compromise

ADVICE FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

“Writing is a labor of love. There will be days when you don’t want to put pen to paper. Fight it. Remember your why. Also, hone your craft. Take classes to improve your writing skills and learn from those who are doing what you want to do. You’ll get better at writing, the more you write.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

“I’m so excited to be working on my first romance novel. If all goes according to plans, it will be released in the fall of 2023.”

Writing Class

5 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE ENROLLING IN A WRITING CLASS

Being an author is about more than having a good book idea. It takes skills such as structuring a book that will target a market. Authorship requires development and training, perhaps through a writing course. But choosing the right course will take some effort. Ask yourself the following questions before signing up for your next course:

• What do I want to learn? Make sure the course you are looking at offers the information you need. Check the course contents or syllabus to determine which topics will be discussed in the class.

• What are the instructor’s qualifications? Why take a course from someone who has no insight on the subject? Take some time to see if the person teaching the course has experience in the field by researching them online. Bad writing advice can do more harm than good.

• How much time am I willing to devote? Any course is going to require time for reading and writing. Some may

require time for research and/or homework. Consider your present schedule when deciding how much time you have available, then decide how much time you are willing to devote to completing the class. If it doesn’t meet your needs, then find another class.

• How much money am I willing to spend? Classes range in price from free to thousands of dollars. Weigh the benefit of having the information against the cost of the class. Only you can determine if the course fulfills the need for a cost that is reasonable to you.

• What are the reviews for the course? What are others saying about the class? If others have found the class to be beneficial, chances are, so will you.

Remember, it takes more than a good book idea to become an author. It takes training and development. Choosing the right courses can take you to the next level in your writing career. Choose carefully.

Tabitha Bouldin

ADVENTURE WITH HEART

Tabitha Bouldin writes contemporary romance with spiritual arcs and characters who are not afraid to be real. Sometimes they’re sarcastic too. She loves a good banter between characters, whether they’re siblings arguing over who deserves the last cookie or romantic interests dancing around their feelings. She has been ghostwriting for several years across many genres.

After discovering her love of writing and deciding editing had become her second passion, she built a critique group filled with contemporary Christian romance

writers. Together, they have created some great works, and she wants to bring that excitement to new platforms. The only thing she loves more than writing is helping other authors.

Tabitha has a bachelor’s degree in creative writing/English from Southern New Hampshire University. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and has been writing since 2015. When she’s not homeschooling her kids, you’ll find her curled up with a book. Tabitha’s genre of choice is Contemporary Christian Romance which she describes as adventure with heart.

PASSION FOR WRITING

“Writing is the thing that is equal parts infuriating and liberating for me. I write for myself, for God, and for the words that refuse to stay locked away in my head. Telling stories is an innate part of who I am as a person, though telling them through writing has always been my preferred method of discovery. Stories have a way of revealing parts of me, whether it be things I need to know about myself or lessons that I might still need to learn.

“God has a way of reaching me through those moments when my fingers are on the keyboard, or I hold a pen in my hand. I love being wrapped up in the writing, the digging deep into characters and seeing what stories they’re aching to tell.”

NEW RELEASES

Tabitha has three new books set for release. The anticipated Lost in Wonderland, book 2 in the Beyond Wonderland Series was released on March 14, 2023, Love Like No Other: Year One, book 5 in the Suamalie Islands Series will be released on June 27, 2023, and Robbing the Races in the Ever After Mysteries Series is set for release on July 4, 2023.

THE LONG MARCH HOME by Marcus Brotherton and Tosca Lee

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHORS OFFER DUAL-TIME STORY COMMEMORATING THE BATAAN DEATH MARCH

AN INTERVIEW WITH MARCUS AND TOSCA

The Long March Home is set against the backdrop of the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. When did you first learn about the Bataan Death March, and why did you decide to write a novel about this era?

MARCUS: It all started about fifteen years ago when Lt. Buck Compton and I were waiting for a plane during a speaking tour. Buck—who’d been a commissioned officer with the legendary Band of Brothers—was talking to me about World War II, and I remarked about the difficulty he’d experienced during the wintry siege of Bastogne.

Buck agreed, then said, “Yeah, but at least I wasn’t fighting in the Pacific. Man, those guys had it really rough.” That line stayed with me for years.

I began to read up extensively on the era. In 2013, historian Adam Makos and I interviewed veterans who’d fought in the Pacific for our bestselling oral history project, Voices of the Pacific. I grasped more fully what Buck was hinting at then. But I hoped to do more.

Inspired by true stories, The Long March Home is a gripping comingof-age tale of friendship, sacrifice, and the power of unrelenting hope.

Jimmy Propfield joins the Army for two reasons: to get out of Mobile, Alabama, with his best friends Hank and Billy and to forget his high school sweetheart, Claire.

Life in the Philippines seems like paradise—until the morning of December 8, 1941, when news comes from Manila: Imperial Japan has bombed Pearl Harbor. Within hours, the teenage friends are

plunged into war as enemy warplanes attack Luzon, beginning a battle for control of the Pacific theater that will culminate with a last stand on the Bataan Peninsula and end with the largest surrender of American troops in history.

What follows will become known as one of the worst atrocities in modern warfare: the Bataan Death March. With no hope of rescue, the three friends vow to make it back home together. But the ordeal is only the beginning of their nearly fouryear fight to survive.

When it came to this era, I wanted to take readers right into the action and pathos and connect with not only nonfiction readers but fiction readers too, which ultimately led to the creation of The Long March Home.

TOSCA: Honestly—and this was one big reason I wanted to do this book—I had not heard about the Defenders of Bataan or this harrowing chapter in World War II history until Marcus approached me with the idea of working together on this project.

What a sobering education researching this story has been and what an honor it is to share it with others who, like me, may not be aware of it or its heroes.

28 LITERARY DEN VBD Magazine

The Long March Home is the story of three friends, Jimmy “Propper” Propfield, Billy Crockett, and Hank Wright. Can you provide some background information on each of these young men?

Jimmy is our main character. He’s a good kid, a pastor’s kid, a kid who always tries to do the right thing. He and Claire, Billy’s older sister, have been companions practically since birth, as their mothers are best friends.

Billy, who is a couple years younger than Jimmy, is the happy-go-lucky sidekick.

Hank, the oldest of the boys, is a natural leader, a bad boy, and the kind of kid others want to be around. The only problem is, Hank’s had a soft spot for Claire since meeting her in third grade… and Claire is the only girl Jimmy’s ever loved.

Jimmy, Billy, and Hank are determined to survive the unthinkable: “If we have to run—if we have to swim off this island—we’re gettin’ through this. The three of us—all home alive.” Can you provide examples of how the friends band together to survive the war?

One of the working titles of the book for a few months during the writing process was All Home Alive. That’s the boys’ goal from the moment they begin to understand what dire straits they’re in.

From the sharing of provisions to their familiar banter in an effort to buoy spirits during the grueling miles of the Death March, the three friends make a constant effort to stay together and protect one another.

The Long March Home is a dual-time novel. Can you expand on how these two timelines intersect?

The dual timeline is very important to this story. It provides the history of the four friends growing up and sets the stage for their circumstances at the time when the boys enlist in the Army. It also provides a much-needed respite for the reader from the horrors of war as the boys are engaged in fighting and later in their bid for survival as POWs.

What underlying themes can be found within The Long March Home?

We answer that in two ways: Overtly, it’s a story of the power of friendship set against a backdrop of sacrifice. What would you do for the friends you love the most? Then, it also points to the complex morality of life. We often think only in black and white, right or wrong. But life hands us situations in which we are pushed far beyond our comfort zones. This book asks, would you take one life to save another?

The Bataan Memorial Death March has been organized to commemorate the lives that were lost during that time. When did this memorial march first begin, what is involved in the march, and where does it take place?

The Bataan Memorial Death March takes place at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico— a state deeply affected by the loss of life in the Philippines during World War II. Of the approximately ten thousand lives lost on the Bataan Death March, nine thousand of them were Filipino.

Nearly ten thousand participants take part in the memorial march every year. Next year marks the 81st anniversary of the Bataan Death March and the 34 th annual Bataan Memorial Death March, which will take place March 19, 2023. GUIDING OTHERS TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS

Dimple Mukerjee

LITERARY DEN VBD Magazine
32

There is great power in speaking positivity into your life. What if you found one word that would help manifest a positive mindset and positive outcomes in your life?

VBD Magazine had the opportunity to interview Dimple Mukherjee, author of Word of the Year. Dimple is not only a talented author, but she is also a health coach with a mission to positively impact the lives of others.

INSPIRATION

Dimple has been a bookworm her whole life. “I’ve heard that in order to be able to write, or write well rather, you should also be a reader,” says Dimple. A resident of Ontario, Canada, Dimple was able to find a local writing group where she was inspired to be a writer. Being a member of this writing community, Dimple realized that writing alongside others is one of her favorite ways to write. She had the opportunity to collaborate with writers that inspired her to co-author two books, Inspired Living and Women Rising. This was a gentle way for Dimple to take a step in the right direction and she was empowered to write her solo offering, Word of the Year.

Along with her writing community, traveling has also been a source of great inspiration for Dimple’s writings. Throughout her travels, Dimple made it a point to journal regularly to process her emotions and connect with the divine. “Maintaining this habit allies me to channel my intuition which further inspires me to keep writing,” says Dimple. “Also, I’m a strong lover of rituals. Practicing rituals ground me and help me to tune into my creative force.”

WORD OF THE YEAR

Dimple has 20 plus years of experience as an Occupational Therapist. Her exposure to chronic physical and mental illness has taught her the importance of preventative measures. Personal experiences inspired Dimple to create a safe space for women to have access to resources that provide emotional support. Although Dimple has a great interest in reading non-fiction books, she feels it is important to sprinkle your life with fiction books. “Fiction books lead you to unknown places and far-away

lands where the power of dreaming and magic are abundant,” says Dimple. Dimple had followed an online blogger who practiced the act of calling in a Word of the Year. This inspired her to share the Word of the Year practice with a group of friends on a magical evening in her home. Dimple was blown away with the response and impact of sharing the Word of the Year in an intimate setting with her friends. This experience led her to formalizing the practice with others on a larger scale. The release of her book Word of the Year is a testament to her passion for guiding others to find the support required to be in tune with their emotions.

LIVE YOUR WORD

With the release of her book Word of the Year in 2021, Dimple decided to expand on her purpose of guiding her readers to not only find their Word of the Year, but to live their word. She began to offer online programs, workshops, and private coaching sessions. When asked how an individual can find his/her purpose, Dimple responds, “I think it’s important to sit with your body - the myriad of your emotions.”

Dimple believes that spending time in solitude and being comfortable in the wide array of emotions, their complexities and dualities without judgment or impatience, is the key to finding your purpose. Dimple created a Live Your

Word community to serve as a resource and support to keep your Word of the Year alive and practiced throughout the year. Her private coaching sessions allow her to guide her clients through the process of finding their word and truly living it.

UPCOMING PROJECTS

Dimple continues to make an impact within her community by offering private coaching sessions, access to the Live Your Word community, lunch and learn wellness workshops, and enrollment for the Call in your Word online program. She is currently working on accompaniments to the Word of the Year such as an oracle card deck and a Live Your Word Journal.

CREATING LIFE-CHANGING WORKS Norma L. Jarrett

Norma L. Jarrett, J.D. is the award-winning author of several Penguin Random House novels, including Sunday Brunch, Sweet Magnolia, and The Sunday Brunch Diaries. Her work has been featured in several media outlets such as USA Today, Essence, Ebony, Publisher’s Weekly, Southern Living, Upscale, and other media. Norma has been a featured guest on The Yolanda Adams radio show, Houston’s Majic 102, 97.9 the Box, Atlanta’s V103, and other outlets.

I’M TRYING TO REFINE THIS PROCESS. LIKE MANY WRITERS, FOCUS AND DISCIPLINE CAN BE CHALLENGING, HOWEVER I UTILIZE VARIOUS RESOURCES, AS THE INDUSTRY IS EVER EVOLVING.

A Certificate of Congressional Recognition was presented to Norma for her literary work. She has served as a panelist/speaker at the Baltimore Book Festival, Miami Book Fair, Harlem Book Fair, Essence Music Festival, Christian Book Lovers Retreat, and other events. She is a graduate of North Carolina A & T State University and Thurgood Marshall School of Law. Norma is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is married and resides in Houston, Texas.

VBD Magazine is excited to turn the spotlight on the celebrated author. During our interview, Norma shares her writing process, why she likes both self-publishing and traditional publishing, and upcoming projects.

WRITING PROCESS

Norma writes women’s fiction, inspirational fiction, and inspirational romance, but has been including a bit of suspense in her recent works. She has published 13 books and is planning to finish her next novel Savannah Girl Sisters for a 2023 launch.

34 LITERARY DEN VBD Magazine
“My purpose for writing is to entertain and encourage through positive, realistic characters that evolve.”— Norma L. Jarrett

“I write impactful, inspiring, multi-generational stories that place women of color at the center exploring life’s challenges through relatable topics—love, family, sisterhood, career, and culture—that illuminate various mediums. I want to leave a legacy of uplifting, creative work of diverse representation and timeless stories in the book, TV, and film industries.

“Typically, I begin with a clear character or story idea. I’m a “panster” and a latent plotter. Close to the middle, I start an outline. Depending on the nature or genre of the book, I research all necessary facts.

“I’m trying to refine this process. Like many writers, focus and discipline can be challenging, however I utilize various resources, as the industry is ever evolving.”

SALT AND SKY

“What an enjoyable read. Loved getting to know the characters and seeing just how their lives were so interwoven. A beautiful written story of first love, consequences, and forgiveness. This story reinforces your belief in prayer and that God places people in your life for reason or season. Salt and Sky is a must read!!”—Amazon Reviewer

Salt and Sky is Norma’s most recent novel. In this book, Maxine and Sierra Sanders, mother and daughter, are both bound to a powerful family by a genera-

tional sin. Before either can get free, they must overcome a series of life changing battles. Ultimately, Sierra discovers her own faith will be the key to their financial, mental, physical, and spiritual deliverance. However, she must first embark upon a divinely connected journey to Martha’s Vineyard. Through pain, secrets and loss of life, their hard-fought freedom is eventually won. Long after the last page is turned, readers will affirm their faith in restoration and miracles.

“I loved the idea of writing a mother and daughter story. One whose faith has evolved (Maxine Sanders) and the daughter whose mother’s trauma has delayed and hindered her faith.”

THE MESSAGE IN SALT AND SKY

“I want my readers to remember that faith is a journey and forgiveness is a process. Healing and help come in the most unique, unexpected ways. We are tempted most by the things that were the hardest to overcome; but deliverance requires vul-

nerability. Problems will seem huge at the onset, but God can give a resolution to anything. Sometimes, the answer to our issues is counterintuitive to logic.”

LEARNING & GROWING

“While writing Salt and Sky, I learned that I could stretch myself as a writer. I intertwined an element of suspense in the storyline. It was a big story with multiple storylines that required organization so multiple characters could evolve. I was able to wrap it up in a way that readers eventually understood the connections. I also learned that writing is therapeutic; you can incorporate your personal nuggets in tender and creative ways.”

SELF-PUBLISHING & TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING

The main difference between self-publishing and traditional publishing is the degree of control the author has over the entire publishing process. Norma weighs in on both avenues to publishing your manuscript.

“I like both. I love the freedom of self-publishing but on a practical side appreciate the distribution and additional publisher support of traditional publishing.”

UPCOMING PROJECTS

“I will be launching Forever Brunch at www.foreverbrunchcompany.com , an online store and brand. Also, there are other creative endeavors that I’m patiently anticipating and working on behind the scenes.”

WRITING WITH POWER & CONVICTION

“When it comes to writing, I am a bit of a hermit because I write in my office or on my couch,” says Kristin Durfee, in an interview with VBD Magazine. “My favorite time to write is early morning, preferably if it is still dark out, though sometimes I hit snooze several times and have to write after work.”

Kristin has been writing short stories and poems since childhood but is now an award-winning author who has created longer books. She is the author of MASS, The Four Corners Trilogy, and short stories appearing in several genres—thriller, speculative, fantasy, and contemporary anthologies for adults. She is a member of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association and International Thriller Writers Association.

“I am usually inspired by the world around me. I love hearing new stories and try to bring the desire to learn something new to my readers. I write a bit of everything. My tastes in reading are as eclectic as my writing.”

Kristin currently calls Central Florida her home, although she grew up outside of Philadelphia. She lives with her husband, son, and their three quirky dogs. When not writing, you can usually find her on a run, horseback riding, or wandering around a theme park.

We sat down to talk with Kristin about her creative process, the inspiration behind her award-winning novel, writer’s block, and more.

WRITING PROCESS

Every writer approaches storytelling differently and the writing process may be different for each project. The writing process usually involves pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing. When it comes to plot structure, most writers fall into one of three categories: plotter, pantser, or planster. In simple terms, plotters outline their stories, pantsers do not, but, as the name suggests, fly by the seat of their pants, and plansters are a combination of plotter and pantser.

“I am what’s called in the writing community as a ‘plotter’, which means I plan out my stories before I write them. This usually includes a detailed chapter-by-chapter outline as well as extensive research before I start writing. I can usually get a first draft done in 1-2 months and then spend the next several months editing, sending out for early-reader feedback,

36 LITERARY DEN VBD Magazine

and finally querying. I’m committed to writing one book a year.”

HARDEST PART OF WRITING

“For me, the hardest part of writing is being disciplined, especially to tackle the less fun tasks. I love drafting and brainstorming new ideas, so that is usually pretty easy for me, but the editing process always feels insurmountable to me. Forcing myself not only to set aside time to do it, but also keeping myself on a schedule is something I struggle with.

“I remind aspiring authors that you can’t edit a blank page! Just get it down, you can always fix it later with edits.”

DEALING WITH WRITER’S BLOCK

The reasons for writer’s block vary— timing, fear, self-doubt, self-criticism, perfectionism, and more. The thing is to find creative solutions that work for you. Kristin recommends, “Keep writing! Even if it isn’t any good. Writing can also be both humbling and overwhelming at times. I think self-doubt goes with the territory.

“You read a book that is so good and forget that the author had to probably edit and rewrite it a bunch of times before it goes to press. I try to calm my fears and remind myself that no book is perfect in the first draft. Plus, you can't edit a blank page, so it’s best just to get something out, then sift through it later to see if there is anything good, chances are there is.”

THE INSPIRATION BEHIND MASS

On March 23, 2021, Kristin released MASS, a compelling page turner in the Young Adults (YA) genre. That year, she won the Florida Writers Association YA book of the year with MASS. “I was thrilled to win the award with MASS, which was such a labor of love project. I hope my writing legacy is one of motivation for others to follow their dreams, even when they seem impossible.

“I was listening to a story on NPR about parents who have been taken to court for refusing medical treatment for their children based on religious beliefs. I thought how interesting it could be if the role was reversed and it was the child who didn’t want the treatment. Sixteen-year-old Stevie Albie came as a fully formed character in my head pretty quickly after that.

“I had to do a lot of research not only on the types of tumors that may cause certain types of visions, but also the legal side of medical emancipation of a minor. I am grateful to have a friend who is a lawyer so I could ask relevant questions. I used online resources as well. It is also the first book I’ve written with one point of view. My other novels have all had multiple points of view, so that was a challenge to me to make sure I didn’t head-hop throughout the manuscript.”

TAKEAWAY AFTER READING MASS

“I hope readers come away with a deeper reflection of their own faith and bias and an understanding that so much of life lives in the gray. I also hope people come away with a little less judgment and more empathy that in difficult situations, it can be near impossible to know what is right.”

ON THE HORIZON

“ SHOT , my first full-length novel for adults comes out later this year. I’m really excited about it. It was a long process to publish for this one including a major rewrite, but I’m really proud of it. It’s a historical fiction thriller based in 1930 New York City and was a blast to write and research.”

WRITING BOOKS THAT ENTERTAIN, ENCOURAGE, AND EDUCATE

PROMISE OF PURITY

Marguerite’s latest book Promise of Purity, book 2 in the Gardens in Time Series was released on February 14, 2023.

THE BLURB

Is true purity found in the laws of religion or in the hearts of the faithful?

East Molesey, England, 1661—

With the return of the exiled king to his rightful throne, Kate Sinclair’s world of black and white now offers the hope of color. But where does color-loving Kate fit? In the bakery as the daughter of a Puritan or in the palace garden among God’s myriad hues? Certainly not within the palace walls of an immoral court with new friends.

Exiled with King Charles II on the continent, Peter Reresby claims unwavering support of his friend’s regained crown. While fighting for the monarchy against his family’s wishes, his sister disappears, and Peter is determined to find her.

Marguerite Gray enjoys the study of history, especially when combined with fiction.

An avid traveler and reader, she teaches French and Spanish and has degrees in French, Spanish, and Journalism from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and a MA in English from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. She has two grown children and currently lives with her husband in northern Louisiana. She writes historical fiction.

“I am an avid reader of historical fiction going back to when I was a child living in England. History fascinates me still. Since I read mostly historical, I enjoy the research, travel, and journey while creating a fictional story alongside the historical background. I include historical characters giving them words they might have spoken. My fictional characters

interact with the historical people and events. History then comes alive for me, more than in the non-fiction books. Promise of Purity is set in 1661, Hampton Court Palace, England amid a very confusing time between the Civil War and the return of the king from exile. My characters must chart an unknown path in the mixed-up society.

“Now that I have shared about my passion and love of the historical genre, I need to add that I read most genres. Contemporary and mystery are lovely alternatives. I’ve written contemporary and enjoyed the challenge of creating characters in a modern age with all the conveniences not available in the past. I love to travel and have ideas about how to write contemporary fiction set in those places. Give me a book, whether contemporary or historical, and I am beyond content.”

When their opposing beliefs collide, Kate and Peter witness a true test of faith in the ability of mankind to shed the past in order to preserve the future… and perhaps learn that the “greatest of these” truly is love.

Minister, International Certified Christian Life Coach, Inspirational Speaker, Award-winning Author, Brand Strategist, Publishing Expert, Podcaster, mother, and an all-around Jesus girl, Crystal Daye is walking in purpose and guiding others to achieve success.

“After experiencing the redeeming power of Christ in my life, there was no way I could shut up about that—it’s the core of who I am,” Crystal reveals.

In January 2017, Crystal took a leap of faith and quit her 9-5 to answer God’s calling on her life to become a kingdom entrepreneur. Since then, she has helped women around the world through her books, coaching, speaking engagements, online courses, podcasts, newsletters, and various media features.

“Christian women and kingdom solopreneurs turn to me when they are ready to write and publish their bestselling book and monetize their brand without compromising their faith. My mission is to help more emerging authors and entrepreneurial women of faith turn their experiences into an empowerment-based business by becoming authors and building a profitable and purpose-driven brand God’s way.”

VBD Magazine is delighted to feature the dynamic entrepreneur, who is forging ahead and making waves with her engaging nuggets, personal insights, and results-driven approach. In our interview, Crystal shares the inspiration behind establishing DayeLight Publishers, services offered, and tips for building a strong publisher-author relationship.

AT A VERY YOUNG AGE, MY PARENTS INSTILLED IN ME THAT THE ONLY LIMITS THAT EXIST ARE THE ONES WE PLACE ON OURSELVES.

FAMILY BACKGROUND

“As far as I can remember, I have always been passionate, ambitious, and driven—a real goal-getter—who always aimed for excellence.”

Crystal grew up in poverty while living in some of the toughest communities in Kingston, Jamaica, but she was resolute that she would not be a victim of her circumstances. With determination, she participated in activities such as cheerleading and pageants, and volunteered in projects that would help in her self-development and success.

“At a very young age, my parents instilled in me that the only limits that exist are the ones we place on ourselves. Life may have taken me down some less-thanideal paths, but I am proof that you can always get back on track, and God can do exceedingly abundantly more than you can imagine.”

Crystal enjoys traveling, reading, cooking, and spending time with her beautiful daughter Christelle.

THE LEAP TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Crystal is the COO of DayeLight Publishers, a faith-based publishing and marketing consultancy company dedicated to helping established and emerging authors write, publish, market, and monetize their books.

“DayeLight Publishers was a God-inspired company. It started out of obedience in 2016 to fulfill a mission He gave me to assist kingdom authors to birth their books so they can impact lives with their message.

DAYELIGHT PUBLISHERS IS DEDICATED TO THE SUCCESS OF AUTHORS. WE OFFER EXCELLENT PUBLISHING SERVICES TO ENSURE OUR CLIENTS’ BOOKS LOOK PROFESSIONAL FOR GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION.

“When I published my first book in 2016, I started studying the publishing and marketing industry to increase my book sales and grow my brand. As a lover of books since I was a child, my passion for the publishing business grew even more when I started working with other authors, helping them to bring their book dream to life.”

Services offered by DayeLight Publishers include book coaching, content development, book marketing consultation, author branding, editing, graphic design, publishing services, book launch, e-publications, and business coaching.

“We work with clients worldwide and in the last 6 years have helped over 500 authors to bring their books to life.”

THE PUBLISHER OF CHOICE

“DayeLight Publishers is dedicated to the success of authors. We offer excellent

publishing services to ensure our clients’ books look professional for global distribution. We are not here for ownership, so our clients keep 100% of their royalties. We equip impact-driven authors with tools and resources so they can launch their books to readers, grow their global brand, and sell more books while they build their author business.

“When clients publish with DayeLight, they become family. Even after they publish their books, we keep clients abreast of publishing and marketing trends, so they can continue marketing their books and achieve success.”

OVERCOMING HURDLES

“The biggest hurdle was my own limited mindset and insecurity. I studied business up to the master’s level, but I didn’t feel qualified to open a publishing business because I didn’t have a degree in that area.

“I had to grow my faith to believe that God has called me for such a time as this, so I studied the industry, hired the best editors, graphic designers, and contractors, with years of publishing experience. Hiring a team, learning to believe in myself, studying and investing in coaches and courses have helped me to be an extraordinary publisher. My life has changed since I left my 9-5 to run my business full time.”

PUBLISHER-AUTHOR RELATIONSHIP

To build a stronger relationship between a publisher and an author, Crystal offers the following tips to publishers:

1. Operate professionally and transparently.

2. Find your unique value proposition as a publisher. What value can you add to your authors? Don’t try to be like anyone else in the industry.

3. Always be investing and growing your knowledge in the field. Things are changing daily, keep abreast of these changes.

“When I published my first book, I felt like a fish out of water. My publisher offered no support during or after. This is one of the main reasons I provide resources for authors, especially about book marketing. I believe this is beneficial to Indie authors.”

AUTHOR LIFE

Crystal is an award-winning author of 10 books. One of her favorite books is Sell More Books, Impact More Lives: A Simple Book Marketing Handbook For New And Aspiring Christian Authors. “Books don’t sell themselves”—this is something I stress to my clients. I created this handbook as a resource to help authors to effectively market their books so they can increase their impact and income. One of the biggest struggles for authors is marketing. This book helps them create a simple book marketing plan to boost their book sales.”

After reading Sell More Books, Impact More Lives, Crystal hopes “authors will realize the importance of marketing their books. It doesn’t make sense to write a great book, and nobody reads it. So, the

marketing tactics shared in this book will help authors grow their platform, promote their book on a budget, and learn new book promotion strategies to get their books into the hands of their ideal readers.”

PASSION & LEADERSHIP COLLIDES

Taylor Kilpatrick

Defining Beauty Inside and Out
44

Pageantry has long been a part of our culture and to date it still manages to hold its position. Many pageants for women have evolved from their original purpose that focused on beauty to place more emphasis on the winner having a global influence while fulfilling worthwhile endeavors and philanthropic goals.

From economically developed countries to less developed ones, many contestants, while representing their countries, use competitions as steppingstones to achieve their personal and professional goals; some contestants even take on the role of advocate to tackle issues.

Taylor Kilpatrick’s dream to wear a crown came true not once, but twice. She was crowned Miss Frisco 2022 and Miss Arlington 2023 in Texas. Taylor is now preparing to be a contestant in the Miss Texas Scholarship Competition, which is the preliminary to the Miss America Scholarship Competition. “I am fortunate to have this wonderful opportunity to spend time with an amazing group of women and compete for my dream job,” says Taylor.

In her exclusive interview with VBD Magazine , Taylor reveals her purpose for competing in pageants, the steps involved as she prepares for the Miss Texas Scholarship Competition, rules she lives by to ensure continued success, and her reasons for entering the entrepreneurial space. Savvy, sophisticated, and resilient, Taylor is making a difference as she pursues her goals.

WALKING IN PURPOSE

Taylor is a 2020 graduate of Texas Christian University where she majored in strategic communications with an emphasis on dance. To cover her tuition, she applied for and earned several scholarships through the Miss America Organization. After leaving college, she worked at the American Heart Association (AHA) as a Project Coordinator. At the AHA, she worked in the Youth Market Division where she coordinated programs to improve heart health for youth, parents, and

school administrators across the United States. Through the Miss Texas Organization, she continues that work via her social impact initiative, Heart of Gold.

“After 4½ years, a worldwide pandemic, and a massive winter storm, I took my last walk as a Texas Christian University undergrad,” Taylor reveals. “The Miss Texas organization helped me to do it. This organization gave me the confidence and communication skills that got me through it all. Oh yeah, and the scholarships.”

To ensure continued success, Taylor lives by three rules:

• Lead by example not by exception.

• You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take…. so, take the shot.

• Mistakes are inevitable, but quite often, there is a simple solution nearby.

“Growing up, if I ever spilled juice on my clothes, or got makeup on my collar, my mom would always say ‘No worries, that is what they make washing machines for.’ This is the mentality that drives my success.”

45
VBD Magazine COVER STORY

Taylor takes great pride in sharing that her mother, Kelli Kilpatrick, serves as a role model and motivator in her life. “My mother is an entrepreneur who has built the foundation of her company on passion, service, and shared knowledge. I learned a lot from my mom.”

CATALYST FOR SUCCESS

Wearing the crown comes with glamor and responsibility but it also helps to develop invaluable life skills such as self-confidence, self-discipline, motivation, determination, poise, character, good sportsmanship, healthy eating habits, and communication skills. Pageants bring people together who are passionate about

the same things, so participants can learn about one another, and lifelong friendships can be formed.

When we asked Taylor why she entered the pageantry space, she responded, “The pageant world fell into my lap like a bowl of fresh lemons. I wanted to get more involved in my community and I found this was one avenue I could use.”

Taylor enjoys spending time with those who are active in her community. She purposefully participates in various women-led organizations such as the eWomen’s Network, Miss Texas Organization, and the servant leaders of the LIT Bible

Study. These organizations gave great importance to service opportunities, public speaking, and powerful networking with other like-minded women.

The Miss Texas Scholarship Competition will be held in June 2023. “My long-term goal is to advance within each pageant so that I can compete with women both on a national and international level,” says Taylor.

According to the official Miss Texas website, “… the Miss Texas Scholarship Organization, Inc. has a rich history of empowering young women to achieve their dreams and goals. Participation in this program provides young women with the opportunity to promote initiatives regarding community service, share their talents, intelligence, and positive values while serving as role models in their communities, all with the support of dedicated volunteers assisting them in their pursuit of academic excellence, service, and lifelong success.”

As Miss Frisco one of Taylor’s most important responsibilities is to help raise funds for scholarships for amazing women. “Making a tax-deductible donation to scholarships is a great way to support my journey to becoming Miss Texas and contribute to the attainment of educational goals for candidates in the Miss Texas Organization,” Taylor tells us. “The women of Miss Texas are some of the brightest women across our great state and they are each doing remarkable things in their universities, careers, and communities.”

EMBRACING EXCELLENCE

Taylor had the opportunity to represent seven cities in Texas for the Miss America organization. “Each and every time the crown is placed on my head, I am filled with honor and pride,” Taylor admits.

Preparing for a pageant is often a year-long process. For the Miss Texas Scholarship Competition, there are 5 different areas requiring specific in-depth training to determine which candidate is best fit to wear the crown.

46 COVER STORY
VBD Magazine

As Taylor prepares for the Miss Texas pageant, she focuses on the following areas:

1. Private Interview : Study relevant current events, formulate opinions, and develop an efficient delivery that exhibits eloquence, poise, and well thought out perspectives.

2. Talent : As a trained dancer, spend time practicing dance techniques to deliver a good performance.

3. Fitness: Work with a personal trainer to create an effective fitness plan. The plan includes a consistent exercise schedule for a minimum of 5 days a week, a meal plan that complements the exercises, and practicing a confident walk and pose.

4. On Stage Question: In addition to preparing for a private interview, it is imperative that contestants prepare to answer questions on stage and deliver the answer within a specific timeframe. Taylor practices mental management which allows her to enter this phase of the competition with confidence in her words and stage presence.

5. Gown: The process of finding the perfect gown can be challenging. When selecting a gown, there are several requirements that need to be considered. For example, it is wise to select breathable fabric that has a tailored fit on the body. The gown should not be a hindrance when contestants walk the stage and pose.

HEART HEALTH ADVOCATE

In May 2022, Taylor’s father suffered a heart attack while riding his motorcycle on the highway, resulting in a shattered femur and pelvis and a broken wrist and ribs. Fortunately, her father is on the road to a full recovery.

“I am thankful that my dad survived the heart attack and is recovering from his extensive wounds,” says Taylor. “He underwent 5 surgeries in 10 days after his accident. Now, my mission as a heart health advocate is to ensure that others

COVER STORY

do not experience the challenges we as a family faced because of heart disease.”

ENTREPRENEURIALLY DRIVEN

As a professional dancer, Taylor has been teaching dance to young children for several years. Her passion lies in positively influencing the lives of children through the gift of dance. Taylor is preparing to start Step Up Dance Academy (SUDA), a dance studio for children within the Dallas area.

“We will practice our routines, perfect our skills, and go to competitions, but it is what is behind the ballet slipper that I am truly proud of,” Taylor states. “I strive to continuously create an environment for my students where they can fall and get back up stronger.

“My goal is to teach children at a young age valuable lessons such as persistence, dedication, and grit. From the stage to the boardroom, each student will be

provided the tools and the support as they take lessons that will serve them for a lifetime. Dance is my passion, and mentorship is my calling.”

As the students attend dance classes, Taylor hopes to pave the way and lay the foundation for children to enter the working world with the skills necessary to succeed. “If I have done my job well, students will enter this space with confidence in their abilities, the work ethic to make it happen, and the tenacity to push through the hard days.

“My experience with pageantry allows me to serve as a role model for children. I have learned that this unique career path is what will allow me to take the best parts of my own experience to create an innovative and powerful learning experience for the youths who enter through the doors of the studio.”

With the help of a business coach and the ongoing support of her family, Taylor is focused on transitioning to entrepreneurship.

GOING THE DISTANCE

“I am preparing to be a contestant in the Miss Texas Scholarship Competition, and I will continue my work as a heart health advocate. In the summer of 2023, I will open Step Up Dance Academy, my first dance studio for children.

“I genuinely love what I do every day. I want to be a connector of people within my community and business. Also, I want to achieve consistent mental and physical health. As a leader of youth, it is important to model what I teach. Having good mental and physical health will allow me to provide the best work possible for my students while serving as an example for them. I want to become a trendsetter in the performing arts industry and to be the driving force behind the empowerment of children through music and dance.”

ELYSIUM TIDE

THERE’S

PARADISE

SUSPENSE NOVEL FROM James Hannibal

Award-winning author James R. Hannibal is no stranger to secrets and adventure. This former stealth pilot from Houston, Texas, has been shot at, locked up with surface-to-air missiles, and chased down a winding German road by an armed terrorist. He is a two-time Silver Falchion Award winner for his children’s mysteries, a former Thriller Award nominee, and a 2020 Selah and Carol Award finalist for The Gryphon Heist—the opener for the CIA series that now includes Chasing the White Lion.

James is a rare multisense synesthete, meaning all of his senses intersect. He sees and feels sounds and smells, and hears flashes of light. If he tells you the chocolate cake you offered smells blue and sticky, take it as a compliment.

AN INTERVIEW WITH JAMES

Give us a summary of your novel, Elysium Tide.

When neurosurgeon Dr. Peter Chesterfield explodes on a colleague in the middle of a life-or-death operation, the Royal London Hospital administrator decides enough is enough. He sends workaholic Peter on a forced vacation to Maui. As he is walking the beach after midnight while coming to grips with his stress addiction, a young woman washes up at his feet. Despite all his medical knowledge and skill, she dies in his arms. Peter becomes obsessed with finding out why. He must bring her killer to justice.

Detective Lisa Kealoha has returned to Maui after a few years of putting in her dues in the LAPD. The department brings her in to run Maui’s new gang task force. The local cop who wanted the job is not happy about it and not ashamed to say so out loud. With her future in the Maui PD on the line, the last thing Lisa needs is a British know-it-all shoving his nose into her investigation. But Peter has an eye for things that are out of place. It’s what he does. He finds that which is out of place and sets it right. The reluctant pair join forces to catch a killer, diving deep into Maui’s evolving gang culture, and uncover a conspiracy with far-reaching

IN LATEST

consequences. Knowing too much is deadly, and the two must catch the killer before the killer catches them.

What sparked the idea for this novel?

My family took a vacation to Maui, and a resort representative gave us a tour of the place. She wanted to show us the shops, the pools, etc., but I took an interest in a series of conference rooms where presenters were speaking to mostly empty seats. When I asked about it, our guide described resort medical conferences. These boondoggle conferences benefit the resorts with wealthy doctor clientele while serving as a write-off for hospitals and medical associations. It’s a great deal for the docs, and I thought, “What if there was one stuffy British surgeon who just plain hates the idea of a hospital-sponsored vacation—or any vacation at all?” The character of Peter Chesterfield grew from there.

As a former tactical deception officer and stealth pilot, have you experienced firsthand the highstakes action that takes place in your novels?

I’ve had bullets fly past my cockpit. I’ve been chased on the ground by a gun-toting killer. I’ve compiled tons of evidence to hunt down drug dealers and terrorists. I did bring some of that energy into the story. But I’ve never operated on a child’s brain. And I’ve never worn a badge. When I did detective-style work, I operated under a different set of rules. So, this story took a great deal more research than my spy thrillers.

Can you explain how those real-life experiences have influenced the plotlines and characters that you write?

Once I dove into Peter’s character, I realized a stress junky is a stress junky whether he’s hunting terrorists, flying fighters, or digging a tumor out of a kid’s brain. I also realized at times, in some of the darker parts of Peter’s workaholism, I was writing about myself. That alone created a major shift in my relationship with my family. Did my life influence the plotlines? Sure. But the plotlines

(and really the character development) influenced my life far more.

When did you decide to write your first novel?

I decided to write my first novel when I was four. It took a while, but I got there thirtysome-odd years later.

What do you love most about writing suspense novels?

I love building new worlds and meeting new characters. I love what they tell me about myself.

What do you hope readers will gain from reading your book?

I hope a few stress junkies like me read this book. I hope they see themselves in Peter and find a way to make a change. Their lives and relationships depend on it. Don’t believe me? As I write this, I’m sitting in a wheelchair because I pounded my feet to pieces working too hard last summer. It’s temporary (I hope), but it’s a great wake-up call. I also infused Peter with a god-complex atheism that meets its match when he can’t save the murder victim. He’s not in control. Not at all. I

hope the way Peter comes to grips with God’s sovereignty helps a reader—or helps a reader reach someone like him.

What are you working on next?

The Realm of the Lightraiders is exploding. God is moving so fast I’m fighting to keep up. Stories, games, and Bible study adventures occupy all my working hours. But let’s be clear—I’ve throttled those working hours back because of what I learned while writing this book.

URBAN CHRISTIAN FICTION AT ITS FINEST

BESTSELLING AUTHOR & YOUTH PASTOR H. H. Fowler

Conceived in the chills of Switzerland, Heath Fowler’s parents journeyed back home to the Bahamas where he was born and reared a Caribbean product. A cosmopolitan at heart, Heath’s interest in the power of writing was ignited at the impressionable age of thirteen. Heath is an ardent reader and a prolific writer of over thirty-five novels.

“I am, by God’s grace, a storyteller,” says Heath. “I write predominantly in the genre Urban Christian Fiction. Stories have a way of driving home a message or they can give food for thought in ways that produce a lasting impression on the reader. This, along with having a platform that allows me to interweave the message of Jesus Christ, have been the purpose behind my writing.”

MY GOAL IS TO WRITE BOOKS THAT WILL CONTINUE TO INSPIRE, ENTERTAIN, EDUCATE, BUT MOST OF ALL, SHARE THE LOVING MESSAGE OF THE GOSPEL.

Multitalented, Heath also operates in the positions of playwright, musician, and producer. He has written several plays, including Papa John Dun Dead and The Papa John Family Pilot . Further, he is the 2006 recipient of the Cacique Award, songwriter of the year, for one of the most requested songs at that time, “More Wind, More Fire.” The song also won the People’s Choice Award.

Currently, Heath serves as VP of G.O. Fowler Apostolic Academy and Head of the Youth Department of the Final Hour Global Ministries, where he strives to enhance the lives of those connected to him. Heath has successfully obtained a bachelor’s degree in Operational Management from Remington College, Tampa, Florida, and an Associate Degree in Biblical Studies from North Carolina College of Theology. He is married to Andrea Natasha and together they are the proud parents of one son and three daughters.

52 VBD Magazine STAR POWER LIST

You’ll love getting to know Heath, who writes as H. H. Fowler. In our interview, he shares the inspiration behind his novel, Married to the Devil, the message he hopes readers will take away after reading this book, and tips for writers who are juggling family life and their dream of publishing.

VBD: What inspires you to write?

HEATH: Real life. Peoples’ lives can be dramatic and many of them are bursting with incredibly stirring, and at times, sensational accounts. My first six-book series, Church Boyz, was born out of a single thought after hearing about the indiscretions of a married, middle-aged pastor. ‘One stupid mistake could reap a lifetime of hell.’ The series went on to become one of my bestselling series to date. My goal is to write books that will continue to inspire, entertain, educate, but most of all, share the loving message of the gospel.

VBD: What’s your ideal writing environment?

HEATH: I usually write whenever I can, preferably in the mornings. My ideal writing environment, however, would be late at night when everyone is asleep and the house is quiet. I can sit at a desk, stretch out on the floor or on my bed, with my laptop on my lap. It doesn’t matter. As long as it is quiet and the ambience of the night is in place, the words flow effortlessly.

VBD: Briefly tell us about your novel, Married to the Devil.

HEATH: Married to the Devil is a two-part series. In this novel, First Lady Erica Winthrop wants out of her abusive marriage, but she is trapped and derailed at every turn by her manipulative husband, Apostle Magnus Winthrop. This series explores the devastating effects of marital abuse, abandonment, and spousal infidelity. Also, it brings awareness to the effects of spiritual apathy and the lack of pastoral vision, which can cripple a church and ultimately, a nation. The plot interweaves some of humanity’s most intrinsic desires that can spin out of control and create a lifetime of regrets.

VBD: What inspired this book?

HEATH: There are a lot of married women in the church who are suffering in silence. My goal was to give voice to these women through the character of Erica Winthrop.

VBD: What message do you hope readers will take away after reading this book?

HEATH: I want my readers to know that God is willing and is able to fight their battles. And that when we look outside of our relationship with God—the One who knows us best—for answers to our pain, failures, and disappointments, we do ourselves a disservice. God can provide or connect you to the help and resources you need, as well as grant you the courage to overcome any challenge you face.

VBD: You’re a father of four. What tips do you have for writers who are juggling family life and their dream of publishing?

HEATH: I am a huge supporter of putting together a detailed outline of your book before attempting to write your story, especially if you’re new at this. And, if possible, write the ending of your story and write with that ending in mind. This will save you some time. Also, it helps to keep a focused path. For me, this helps to eliminate writer’s block.

Maximize every minute of your time. I’ve often written almost an entire chapter on my electronic notepad while either waiting between errands or during traffic jams. You can use Microsoft Word or a writing app. The key is to maximize your time.

Notepads, including the electronic ones, are very useful. When I am unable to sit in front of my laptop because I’m tending to other responsibilities, I use my notepad to quickly jot down plot twists, character details, and any data that can help my story along. It usually takes me less than two minutes, but it could be a jumpstart to begin a new chapter or help you finish a chapter whenever you are able to return to your writing environment.

VBD: What’s next for you?

HEATH: Currently, I am working on a new series titled Blink of an Eye. It is a supernatural Christian Thriller that centers around the apocalyptic literature of the Bible.

STORIES HAVE A WAY OF DRIVING HOME A MESSAGE OR THEY CAN GIVE FOOD FOR THOUGHT IN WAYS THAT PRODUCE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON THE READER.

Randy Judd

AUTHOR OF UPLIFTING AND WHOLESOME NOVELS

54 VBD Magazine STAR POWER LIST
“Write because you can’t contain the story living within you. Write with the purpose of lifting others and improving the world. Your words don’t have to be perfect to make a difference in someone else’s life.”—Randy Judd
Icylin Morgan

Randy Judd is an American author specializing in wholesome and uplifting character-driven novels. He came to writing later in his life. Over the last thirty years, his career took him on the road frequently. During this windshield time, he spent the hours developing stories based on people and places he experienced. Recent retirement gives Randy the time and motivation to put these stories on paper. He intends to continue writing books which inspire and uplift.

“When I started writing my novels, my goal was not to become a well-known author or even to make substantial money from their sales. Honestly, my main goal was to share my books with as many people as I possibly could. The idea that people around the world are reading my books is quite humbling.”

FAMILY LIFE

Randy grew up in the Ozarks of Arkansas. His family’s intense poverty only strengthened the importance of spirituality in their lives. He now lives in the Salt Lake City area with his wife, Connie, near their five children and their families.

“My favorite activity, besides hanging out with Connie, is working in our yard. I'm out mowing or digging every day possible--except winter.”

Through the encouragement of loving parents, Randy was able to work his way through college and earn a B.S. from Arkansas Tech University and later an MBA from Brigham Young University.

THE ART OF STRAIGHTENING NAILS

The Art of Straightening Nails is a story of hope, conquering self, and regaining lost love. This novel should appeal to anyone who has struggled to reclaim their lives from the pains of the past.

“I was surprised at the response to my first book, The Art of Straightening Nails Readers told me how much courage it gave them to overcome adversity in their own life and make a new beginning. I even received an email from a therapist who recommends the book to her patients who

are struggling with issues of their past. This feedback energized me to do more. The reviews and Facebook comments had similar themes. I had no idea my stories could have that much impact.”

COMING SPRING 2023 Forging Nails

In the aftermath of the American Civil War, two southern families take totally different journeys in the manner they address post-war reality. The Chisms--owners of a successful cotton plantation--want their lives to stay rooted in the past. The Stones--owners of a sawmill--find a way to move away from their former ways. The families' differences cause a generational feud which leads to continual conflict, including death.

The enmity between the families continues through generations until two of the families' descendants in modern times deal with the feud they had nothing to do with from over a hundred years before.

THE LISTENING BENCH

What would you tell a stranger in confidence? What secret have you held within yourself that needs to be released?

Randy’s second work, The Listening Bench, leaves the reader with a desire to listen more intimately to the people in their own lives and to seek out ways to make a difference in the world.

“I absolutely loved this book. I bought it in ebook, but now would also like to order a physical copy just so I can have it to revisit when I want to. Brought me to tears a couple of times. This is what everybody wants and needs is just someone to listen.”—Goodreads Reviewer

This family saga deals with the emotions which accompany long-held revenge and the damage it does to the individual carrying it.

One of the descendants is Larry Rhodes-the father in The Art of Straightening Nails. Even though Forging Nails is a sequel/prequel to The Art of Straightening Nails, one book doesn't depend on the other and they can be read in either order.

COMING FALL 2023

Onycha Baker

WALKING IN THE OVERFLOW & LIVING WELL

Christianity has always played a central role in Onycha Baker’s life, and she has used her faith to expertly chart her path. Her testimonies provide evidence that God is loving, faithful, and forgiving. At a time when it’s so easy to hide behind a mask, Onycha doesn’t pretend to have it all together. As she climbs the ladder of success and paves the way for others to succeed, she is facing her fears, insecurities, and the challenges that life throws her way.

Onycha is a graduate of Florida A&M University, where she earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. In 2008, she began her career in financial services, and in 2014, she earned the highly coveted Certified Financial Planner™ designation.

Onycha brought her professionalism, delightful energy, and valuable life lessons to her interview with VBD Magazine. She discussed her many interests and the

challenges she faced in her journey. Her transparency and willingness to share her story serve as a reminder to trust in the Lord. Dive in to see what we learned.

VBD: Why did you choose financial management as a career?

ONYCHA: This journey started when I took an investment class while attending Florida A&M University’s School of Business and Industry. The class sparked my interest. After I graduated, I cultivated that interest while working for one of the largest wealth management firms in the United States.

I am a teacher at heart, and I thrive on seeing others succeed because of what I have been graced to impart to them. Wealth management gives me an avenue to do just that. I recently completed 15 years in my financial services career.

SEEKING GOD FIRST IS KEY. TWO SCRIPTURES COME TO MIND, MATTHEW 6:33 AND PHILIPPIANS 4:6. I FIND THAT WHEN I LIVE OUT THOSE VERSES, BALANCING WORK AND LIFE IS SO MUCH EASIER.

VBD: What sparked your interest to play the piano and how are you using this gift to serve?

ONYCHA: My parents enrolled me in piano lessons when I was a little girl. They were pastoring a growing church and, like many pastors’ children, I was being groomed to support the ministry. I served as lead musician at my parents’ church for 9 years. I have served as a musician for a few other ministries including my current local church. Additionally, I have a couple of young women learning piano under my tutelage.

I’ve always loved music. I believe that music can be a powerful and healing outlet in this human experience. By participating in the music ministry, I am privileged to lead others into the presence of God. That is a priceless and humbling opportunity that I do not take for granted.

58 VBD Magazine PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HAVEN

VBD: What challenges have you had to overcome to attain a level of success?

ONYCHA: I’ve had to overcome fear in several instances, bit by bit. When I first started playing for my church as a teenager, I felt uncomfortable. I had to overcome craving to just be comfortable.

If you have a calling, you get qualified as you walk in it or towards it. You won’t be perfect when you start anything. Once that myth of needing to be perfect before embarking on a new endeavor was out of my head, I realized that I could accomplish whatever I need to, I just have to be willing to override the emotion of fear and the feelings of discomfort.

VBD: How do you successfully practice work-life balance?

ONYCHA: Good question! This is an ongoing learning process. As a single professional woman involved in music ministry and faced with all of the normal adulting tasks, this can be tricky.

Seeking God first is key. Two scriptures come to mind, Matthew 6:33 and Philippians 4:6. I find that when I live out those verses, balancing work and life is so much easier. I’m learning that I have to plan more intentionally for quality time with family and friends in a way that those who are married or live with close family and friends may not have to.

I’m learning to ask for help when I’m not strong enough to lift something—that’s both literally and metaphorically. Or I might be strong enough to lift it, but why risk dropping it or injuring myself when I have friends? I’m continuously building friendships and relationships

with mentors who will speak the truth to me in love, not just tell me what I want to hear. I also have family and friends that I connect with to get a bite to eat, go for a walk, or vent my frustrations for the day. One of the ways I replenish my energy is by finding solitude as well as quality time with family and close friends.

VBD: How do you ensure that you thrive during challenging times?

ONYCHA: I can’t say that I always thrive

during my challenges, but I will not quit. In music, if you miss a beat, you just pick up and jump back in there. These are some of the things that I do:

• Pray.

• Get a good workout to where I’m almost out of breath.

• Listen to praise and worship music.

• Work and serve in areas that I know are my God-given calling or purpose.

• Don’t let my emotions paralyze me to the point of isolating myself or quitting things that I know are good for me and for my community.

• Reach out to family and friends and communicate how I feel or what I need.

• Rest. My mind and body will function best with proper rest.

VBD: What’s next for you?

ONYCHA: I see myself speaking, writing, and continuing to be a lifelong learner.

59 VBD Magazine PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HAVEN
I’M LEARNING TO ASK FOR HELP WHEN I’M NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO LIFT SOMETHING—THAT’S BOTH LITERALLY AND METAPHORICALLY.
BY PARTICIPATING IN THE MUSIC MINISTRY, I AM PRIVILEGED TO LEAD OTHERS INTO THE PRESENCE OF GOD. THAT IS A PRICELESS AND HUMBLING OPPORTUNITY THAT I DO NOT TAKE FOR GRANTED.

LOVE ZONE

When couples serve together in ministry, they not only experience a deeper bond that strengthens their marriage, but they also demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ to others around them. That is why we are honored to feature Robert and Shantae Charles, who gave themselves first to God and then to each other.

During our interview, the dynamic couple shares their ministry endeavors, tips to strengthen a marriage, and the best way to deal with conflict in a relationship.

ABOUT THE COUPLE

Apostle Robert has been professionally trained as an architect and mentored in professional photography by his father. He inspires clients through architectural and creative arts which include innovative design, visual arts, and professional photography. Robert ministers prophetically in the marketplace and inspires leaders around the globe. One of Robert’s keynote works is his ongoing Word Illustration Series® artwork. He serves as Apostle and Senior Pastor of Life Nation Kingdom Community.

Shantae is an education entrepreneur, author, editor, publisher, singer-songwriter, “artivist,” and thought leader on the issues of equity, social justice, and racial reconciliation. Shantae operates in the office of prophet, teacher, and pastor. She is the co-founder of Life Nation Kingdom Community where she serves as an Executive & Teaching Pastor. Her most profound work is the book trilogy Church Love . Shantae inspires clients through book publishing, blogging, and podcasting. She empowers students and educators through academic teaching/ tutoring via her company God Ideas, LLC.

Together, Robert and Shantae use their gifts, talents, skills, and abilities to impact society and advance the causes of justice through creative means.

BETTER TOGETHER

In July of this year, Robert and Shantae will celebrate 23 years of marriage.

“We say God orchestrated a ‘divine comedy’ because neither of us were interested in

each other,” Shantae reveals. “We were friends and co-laborers in ministry and God showed us through prayer that he wanted a union of love. Our friendship and partnership continue, and love brings it all together.”

LIFE NATION KINGDOM COMMUNITY

Apostle Robert and Prophet Shantae embrace God’s call to serve others. Together they established Life Nation Kingdom Community, a mobile and global ministry. “At Life Nation Kingdom Community, we are Christ Believers who speak life and declare Christ Jesus as the true and living way,” says Robert. “We operate through three main tenets: walking in love with God and mankind, living out our faith in the public square, and serving ministry needs in the marketplace. We have

an Apostolic and Prophetic mandate to impart to artists and marketplace leaders. As professional artists and leaders in our multi-vocational calling we understand the complexities of being gifted and graced to traverse sacred and secular realms.

“Our services and teachings are designed to equip artists, businesspersons, and leaders for the manifestation of God’s kingdom mandate and to apply godly principles to their lives. Many of our teachings emphasize justice, racial reconciliation, and restoration. Our partners span from coast to coast and abroad. Now in our eleventh year, our focus remains on building God’s people to be living epistles of the Word of God.”

GOD IDEAS, LLC

God Ideas, LLC, is Shantae’s creative consulting and publishing firm.

“I established God Ideas in response to finding pushback in the literary and music industries to indie artists and authors,” Shantae shares. “I self-published Church Love novels, along with God Ideas music, literature, and visual art. Subsequently, I have gone on to train artists and writers. I help writers through the process of book publishing, editing, and ghostwriting to starting their own publishing companies among other things.

in thinking, and creating new traditions, especially if you are blending families or culture.”

TIPS TO STRENGTHEN A MARRIAGE

PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

While there is no perfect guide on how to prepare for marriage, we asked Robert and Shantae what practical things couples should be prepared for in marriage.

“Couples should be prepared for the process of oneness, ‘the two shall become one’ and this is not an overnight thing,” Prophet Shantae remarks. “As a married couple, you have your individuality, but you also have the new person you are becoming together. Be prepared to be patient, loving, kind, and most of all communicative. Be prepared for lifestyle adjustments, shifts

When it comes to tips to strengthen a marital relationship, the couple tells us, “The important factors to strengthen a marriage are presence, priority, and proclamation. Be present with your spouse, providing them with your undivided attention. It is okay to put notifications on mute and take that paid time off. Proclaim your love through their love language—acts of service, gifts, quality time, and physical touch—and consistently proclaim them. Some people are not publicly affectionate and that is okay. Your spouse needs to be secure in your love and commitment.”

DEALING WITH CONFLICT IN A RELATIONSHIP

Disagreements in a relationship are inevitable. The important thing is to deal with conflicts in a healthy manner.

“Address the conflict, recognizing that you are partners in solving the issue, not enemies on either side of the issue,” says

ADDRESS THE CONFLICT, RECOGNIZING THAT YOU ARE PARTNERS IN SOLVING THE ISSUE, NOT ENEMIES ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ISSUE.

Robert. “You fight together, not against each other. Be open to a counselor for mediating difficult issues.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

“Currently, we are expanding our mobile and global ministry through Daring Dialogues, a podcast, and livestreaming and art exhibitions,” Prophet Shantae discloses. “We are also in production with an art tour/exhibition of Apostle Robert’s prophetic artwork, the Word Illustration Series®. In addition, I am releasing my sixth book this year, an e-book guide for vision planning, to simplify the goal-setting process.”

A TRIBUTE TO MOTHERS

Several years ago, my daughter, Shauna-Kay Harrison, wanted to show me how much she loved and appreciated me. In under an hour, my beautifully creative and innovative child crafted this much-loved poem for me. It is a treasure that now lives in a very comfortable frame in my home office. I read it almost daily. It always warms my heart and turns my frowns upside down. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

L’amour De Ma Vie

(The love of my life)

I always say my favorite number was two. The most symbolic number there is, I think… ‘Cause, well so many things come in pairs. Like your arms wrapped around me in darkest moments, Or those beautiful walnut eyes so stern, and yet so caring.

Those feet that always run to my rescue no matter the price. Those ears, ah yes; they are the best therapist around. Too bad your heart did not come in pairs too, For it is a priceless jewel – so rare and so hard to find.

I treasure you, Mommy, from the inside out, and round n’ about, And this day, I would like to let you know, your love is divine, And I appreciate you so. My own love could not repay all you’ve done for me, And neither can this letter, but all the same, I’d like to let you know that I love you so.

Spring

Our Reminder of Love

Ireceived an invitation from one of my hubby’s and my favorite places to stay, inviting us to visit. We go to this place because we can expect to enjoy a remarkable couple’s massage in a tranquil atmosphere at a spa located inside a cave, which is carved out of the hill next to the hotel. The venue’s captivating scenery is calming and provides the ambiance we enjoy. In the spring and summer, the landscape is full of breathtaking hillsides, exquisite arrays of flowers, and lavish greenery for miles. This level of elegance presents a glimpse of God’s love through the beauty of his creation given us to enjoy.

The company’s words boasting about this venue got my attention. Their details provided a beautiful visual of spring when it arrives, but only after making the point that California is no longer dealing with one of the worst rainy seasons in its history. These details propose that spring arrives after the rains, because in the months before receipt of this invite, the beauty they depicted did not exist. We recognize the journey of plant life starts as a seed and remains out of sight until it is time

to show itself, which tells us none of the beautiful images about spring could happen without those torrential rains.

The company announced that spring is here. This is when the sun’s rays send an alarm to every living plant to emerge and reveal itself. It is a picture of the sun indicating to all plant life it is time to reveal your beauty. Earlier thought to be unfruitful or void of life, those seeds give in to the sun’s rays and I’m sure every plant replies with gratitude.

In love and life, we have seasons as well. We are taught they will come and go, and like plants, we wait for the sun to appear. In our spring, the sun returns and declares that our seasons of difficulties and challenges are over. This is a visual of how love can live anew, even when earlier it appeared as if it wouldn’t. Similarly, love blossoms when we plant, nurture, and believe a harvest will come. Our faith says the seed will multiply. Whether it is our love in service to God, the love of a spouse, a future spouse, family member, friend, or the less fortunate we’ve helped, all required cultivation to get through the

storms. What a beautiful picture of God’s love for us too—his grace and forgiveness will never fail those who love him.

When you pray for the husband God has for you, even though you have not met—cover his life, faith, health, and safety. This shows you believe he exists and you’re planting seeds to grow. Pray that God continues to cover and strengthen the love in your marriage. This shows you believe it will happen and you’re planting seeds to grow. Our prayers plant seeds, and our faith gives God permission to bring our spring at the right time.

May you know with surety, spring will come, love will grow, seasons of waiting for a mate will birth a new love, and God will answer the prayers of the righteous. When what we believe gets revealed, it is because God, the giver of all love, shines on what he approves. His light radiates and announces that what was hidden (spiritual), he now commands to live (natural). As we feel the rays of his light, let us also respond with gratitude.

LEARNING IS LIVING

“When you decide you are no longer willing to learn, that’s the point where you’ve also decided that you no longer desire to live.”—Pastor

This quote is one that I share with my children and congregation often. It has been a staple in my life and keeps me constant in seeking means and methods to procure learning. Learning must not ever become a doormat desire for it is by learning we channel, restrain, and protect our lives. It is also how we invent and transmit.

LEARNING PURPOSEFULLY

Learning builds character. It molds our thought process, giving men means to think critically, subjectively, and intensively. Learning is a lifetime reoccurrence

that never stops because each day offers new or fresh revelation on matters that increase or enhance our ability to live purposeful lives.

The writer of Proverbs 9:9 (ESV) says, “Give instructions to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.” In twofold, this scripture shares the purpose of education.

• It is a vehicle to produce, promote, and propose a higher wisdom, wisdom beyond our innate ability, and

• It is a way to indoctrinate knowledge.

Even the Apostle Paul in his letter to Timothy (see 2 Timothy 3:16) reveals that all Scripture is breathed out by God. Sharing that scripture is purposeful for teaching, reproofing, correction, and training in righteousness. With this, we find that God solidifies, justifies, and institutes man’s need to learn. Yet, He warns us in Colossians 2:8 that our learning can become infiltrated if not guarded. We are not to allow anyone to take us captive by philosophy-intellectual big words or double talk.

Danyelle Scroggins
70 LOVE ZONE

We must also:

• Be aware of empty deceit according to human traditions.

• Have discernment against elemental spirits of the world; and

• Stay clear from wisdom that is not according to Christ.

All these things can lead to quarrels, lack of wisdom, and conformation to a world we are not birthed from but born into.

A RENEWING OF THE MIND

Learning is the renewal that transforms our minds. It gives us access to things unknown by man, but revealed by God, when we understand them. Proverbs 4:5-7 (KJV) tells us, “Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her

not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting, get understanding.” The scripture in layman’s terms is saying, whatever you do learn. Don’t merely learn to be able to say you know or have it. But understand the why’s and how of the matter. Because when you understand the principal things, no one can sway or take them from you.

In today’s society, we must tell our children that woven into man’s opinion is what he has learned or embraced. If his engagement with learning is obsolete, then his opinion is futile. So, beware of the opinions of man but rather seek God’s wisdom on everything. For when we know what we know, no one can take it from you. Neither

man’s opinions or worthless wisdom can shatter or take away what you know. Nor can anything intrude upon our spiritual intellect, character, or intelligence.

In closing, learning is what helps us to rightly handle the words of truth, be approved by God, and keep us from shame. You must continue in your efforts to learn, because it enhances your quality of life and is a lifelong process. When you seek to learn, God positions the seeker to find.

AN ACT OF FAITH

In case you do not know, learning is your act of faith. God gives it generously, without reproach and shares with you the master plan for your life. That plan promotes welfare, not evil, a future, and hope. Keep learning because learning is living.

Lakeshia Poole

Creating Stories with Hope, Humor, and Happy Endings

“I let my light shine and encourage others to do the same, one word at a time.”

74 VBD Magazine INSPIRATION OASIS
—Lakeshia Poole
Paula Hamilton

Lakeshia Poole has always loved a good story. Whether telling her own thrilling tales through her publishing company Luemarie or empowering businesses and aspiring authors to craft their best stories, she believes that words have the power to change the world.

An alumna of the University of Georgia, Lakeshia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism-Public Relations. When she’s not busy creating new stories or helping aspiring authors with their stories, Lakeshia spends time with family or relaxing on her porch reading while sipping coffee.

You’ll love getting to know this down-toearth author as she discusses her writing process, latest release, and the services she offers to aspiring authors.

VBD: How many books have you published?

LAKESHIA: I always joke that I self-published my first book in fourth grade. I was introduced to creative writing and fell in love with it. I wrote and illustrated several stories, stapled them together and sold them to my classmates. Since then, I have indie-published 7 books including a mix of new adult fiction, inspirational non-fiction, guided journals, Christian fiction, and women’s fiction.

VBD: What inspires you to write?

LAKESHIA: I am easily inspired, whether it is a headline, or I hear a name, or I see an interesting exchange. I consider everything in life potential material and in many ways, I process some of my most challenging moments through writing. I find that having that quiet time in nature allows me to think through ideas.

I write because I believe words change the world. I am passionate about helping people realize the value of words and stories. God’s creation began with words; Jesus taught through parables. It’s important to me as a writer to create worlds that inspire and give people a sense of hope. There is something special about reading a story where you

can see yourself in the experiences and the characters feel familiar.

VBD: Has your writing process changed over the years?

LAKESHIA: My writing environment has remained consistent. I tend to approach each project the same way, but each book has been its own unique experience. Some took years to develop and others only a couple months. I like going for a walk before writing and I am most productive sitting at my writing desk with a word count goal in mind, listening to a playlist of jazz, instrumental music, or film scores. I find that this writing ritual helps me to be a disciplined and diligent writer.

At the beginning of every project, I am very strategic and structured, but it is not boring because I don’t limit myself. I give myself the space to spend time getting to know my characters and setting through research, brainstorming, and outlining.

That’s what makes it exciting for me, plus I discover new things about myself each time.

VBD: Which authors have substantially influenced your writing?

LAKESHIA: I have been most influenced by Southern writers or authors who have stories that explore a cross section of faith and Southern culture such as Alice Walker and Flannery O’ Connor. Toni Morrison and Bernice McFadden have also inspired me to experiment as a writer. None of these writers shy away from questions or the complicated gray areas of life. I want to have that boldness.

VBD: What inspired your latest book?

LAKESHIA: My latest book is Renew: 40 Prayers and Prompts to Power Up Your Life (Prayer & Pages). A few years ago, God gave me an idea to host a 3-day prayer challenge, where I invited people

75 VBD Magazine INSPIRATION OASIS

across the world to join me for three days of journaling and prayer. Too often, prayer is presented as a way to “get something” from God. I wanted to show people that prayer is also a way to get to know God, and the you God created you to be.

With prayer journaling, we are asking ourselves questions or just writing out prayer requests. With Renew: 40 Prayers and Prompts to Power Up Your Life (Prayer & Pages) , we ask God very specific questions. It was always interesting how people reacted to hearing from God. The most amazing and somewhat concerning part is that people were shocked at how much God loved them. God prompted me to turn that experience into a journal. Renew has questions that you can ask God, scriptures, and prayers I have written, all aimed at getting readers into the practice of building an intimate spiritual relationship with God.

VBD: What was the hardest part about writing this book?

LAKESHIA: The hardest part was the timeline. I really took a leap of faith in creating the guided journal and finished it in a couple of months.

VBD: What message do you hope readers will take away after reading this book?

LAKESHIA: I want them to realize the power of God’s personal love. God loves you so much and God knows you better than anyone. If you’re feeling uncertain or confused about where you are in life, it’s time to get quiet and commune with your Creator.

to light up the world with encouraging, enlightening, and entertaining books and content.

As a writing coach, I help aspiring and emerging authors who feel like God has placed a story or book idea on their hearts, but they feel like they’re all over the place. They’re tired of Googling, YouTubing, and struggling to find a place for their story. They don’t know where to start, so I give them step-by-step support, the comfort of an organized process, and peace as a creative partner. Through one-on-one, group coaching, classes, and a writing community, I don’t just encourage writers to finally finish, but I equip and empower them to write books in a way that aligns with their vision, values, and voice.

VBD: What’s next for you?

LAKESHIA: I’m planning to release A Side of Faith at Rosa Mae’s Cafe, which continues the storytelling in my book Faith Beats Fear. It features my fiercely faithful and funny character Mrs. Rosa Mae. Everyone knows a ‘Mrs. Rosa Mae.’ She may be your mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, mentor, coworker, church elder, or a complete stranger. Whatever title you assign her, she will pull you to the side and help you get it together. Mrs. Rosa Mae doesn’t mince words, but you know she’s coming from a place of love and truth. When people show up at her cafe, they fill up on food and faith.

VBD: What services do you offer aspiring authors?

LAKESHIA: I created my publishing imprint Luemarie, named after my mother and maternal and paternal grandmothers, lakeshiapoole.com

Don’t Stop LEARNING

Don’t ever think that you can’t learn It’s a decision that you need to make It’s all up to you to put forth the effort It’s okay if you make mistakes

Decide what you want, and write out a plan To guide you along the way Put action with desire, take the first step And get started, come what may

As long as you are willing to give it a try, The sky has no limits for you Invest in yourself, give it all you’ve got I promise, you’ll make it through

It may not be easy and that’s okay Most good things in life are not So just stay true to the task at hand, Your hard work won’t be for naught

If you should stumble as most of us do Don’t wallow in self-defeat Ask for help, try it again and again your goals, you soon will meet

When we stop learning, we stop living Life is short enough on its own Keep a willing mind and in no time You’ll see how much you’ve grown.

10 Habits

TO MANIFEST YOUR DREAMS

VBD Magazine INSPIRATION OASIS
78

The Cambridge Dictionary defines manifestation as “a sign of something existing or happening.” The manifestation trend is not a new topic. Simply put, manifesting your dreams means setting your intentions and taking action toward those intentions. I often advise my coaching clients that “in order for change to happen, change must happen in their lives.” For change to happen in anyone’s life, a mindset change is needed. Let’s discuss 10 habits to manifest your dreams.

1. TRUST IN YOURSELF

Your biggest cheerleader is you. When manifesting your dreams, it is important to know this and not make the mistake of depending on reassurance from others to move forward.

Trust that you have the power to make your dreams a reality. Trust in your own ability to achieve your goals. As a leader, if you have a high performing employee, your confidence level is high that all assigned tasks will be completed in its entirety. Apply that level of confidence to yourself.

2. VISUALIZE THE END RESULT

Spend time visualizing your dreams and the end results. The more you visualize your dream, the closer you will be to achieving it. Imagine how it will make you feel, how it would change your life, and who you would share this accomplishment with.

3. BE LASER FOCUS ON YOUR GOALS

When you are writing down your goals, be very detailed. For example, if your goal is to open a bakery by the fourth quarter of 2023, be specific on the exact month. When you do not set specific goals, you run the risk of missing important timelines which will set you back on achieving your goal.

4. CREATE A VISION BOARD

Gather images, words and items that represent your dream. This allows you to further visualize how your dreams will come true. Hang your vision board where you can see it on a daily basis. This will

serve as a reminder to be focused and stay the course.

5. MAKE DAILY DEPOSITS

Manifesting your goals is no easy task. Make a list of the steps with clear timelines. Take the time to work on daily tasks. Be consistent. Regardless of how small the tasks, it takes you closer to accomplishing your goals.

6. LEAD WITH A POSITIVE MINDSET

When you are in the process of manifesting your dreams, it is important to surround yourself with positivity. When you allow negativity to fill your mindset it causes temporary setbacks, self-doubt, and self-sabotage. Surrounding yourself with positivity includes identifying friends

and family members who help support your vision and goals and reading self-help books that focus on a positive mindset.

7. USE WORDS OF AFFIRMATION

Repeat and believe words of affirmation to yourself on a daily basis, including “I am worthy of success” and “I am capable of achieving my goals.” If you practice journaling, write down your words of affirmation and let it guide you through your journey. Your words and thoughts play a crucial role within having a positive mindset. Be intentional with the words you use. For example, if you start to tell yourself “this is not going to work” or “what if I am not successful,” you are placing doubts in your mind. Replace the doubts with words of affirmation.

8.

LET GO OF FEAR

If you start to manifest from a place of fear, your actions will struggle to support a positive outcome. Self-doubt and self-sabotage can cause unnecessary fear. Let go of your fear. Replace it with a positive mindset. If you experience any fear or feel discouraged, speak to an accountability partner that will help you get back on track. Invest in a life or business coach that can assist you with any doubts that you may have.

9.

DON'T GIVE UP

Manifesting your dreams requires hard work and persistence. Stay focused and work toward your goal without any distractions. As it is said “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.” It is important to understand that if you truly focus on achieving your goal, nothing can stop you.

10.

PRACTICE GRATITUDE

When you are manifesting your dreams, be grateful for the journey. Understand you have the opportunity to achieve your goals and dreams. Thank those who helped you achieve your dreams. This could be a coach, mentor, or friend. When you practice gratitude, it gives you the confidence to continue to manifest new goals. manifestwithBindu.com

BREAKING CHAINS AND WINNING

Raittia Rogers

80 VBD Magazine INSPIRATION OASIS

Raittia Rogers wears many hats—wife, mother, entrepreneur, author, storyteller, voice over artist, actress, freelance writer, editor, speaker, community activist, and ordained minister. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Raittia serves as the CEO and Founder of Raittia Rogers Evangelism Ministries, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers several outreach programs to the community.

“I am here by God’s plan and grace,” Raittia tells us during her interview with VBD Magazine. Raittia has turned her knowledge into unmatched insights and is providing a stimulating environment to spur personal growth in others. We are delighted to share her story.

A NEW PATH

“My three siblings and I were raised in a toxic environment,” says Raittia. “Our mother was addicted to drugs and alcohol, and she showed us more about fighting and shoplifting rather than giving us the love that we needed, because of how she was raised. I had hardcore relationships with my family and friends which caused me to have an unhealthy relationship with everyone.”

While serving an eight-year sentence for a robbery with a dangerous weapon, Raittia managed to overcome her addictions as her faith blossomed. “I remember being filled with peace. I felt loved and that gave me permission to love others, to pour the love of God that was on the inside of me into others.”

After serving 3 years in the penitentiary, Raittia was released in 2006. During her childhood, she was close to her father, but that was short-lived as he went to prison to serve a 40-year sentence for robbery. That kept her father away from the family for nearly 20 years. Eventually, Raittia was reunited with her father after his release from prison. She also reconciled with her mother. “I just love my mom. It’s crazy. It’s something God put in me, regardless of our past.”

Raittia has created a healthier environment for herself and is showing others that they

can do the same in their communities and around the world. She is relentlessly pursuing her goals and achieving success along the way. The proud mom remains thankful for the opportunity to see her amazing 25-year-old son thriving as he walks in purpose.

“I got to where I am today by facing hard prison time and finding God who helped me to order my steps so that my life could shift in the right direction. I’m a beneficiary of God’s love, faithfulness, mercy, and forgiveness, and that’s why I encourage others to surrender to Him to find freedom by breaking out of prison.”

WRITING HER STORY

Raittia shared her life story in her book, I Broke Out Of Prison, an Amazon best seller. “I broke free at 21 years old after being in and out of juvenile detention centers and jail because I was living a life of crime—selling drugs and being involved in gang violence, domestic abuse, rape, and robbery. I got my breakthrough by

stepping out of fear and into faith, and in doing so I was able to write and publish my first book.”

After publishing her book, Raittia created a documentary called I Broke Out Of Prison (The Raittia Rogers Story) which is now streaming on YouTube. It has over 60K views.

“I am proud of myself for doing good and influencing lives. I was inspired by The Most High God to write my book so that I could eradicate the shame I felt and be a blessing to others who have walked a similar road. I broke out of the prison that was holding me back from sharing my story with the world.

“I feel blessed to be involved with different communities because I get the opportunity to speak, share, and sell my books to inspire others. A portion of my books and T-shirt sales goes back to the communities and that’s mainly how my organization keeps growing.

81 VBD Magazine INSPIRATION OASIS

"I travel to share my story. At one stage of my life, I felt fearful, but now there’s no more fear here. My biggest event was the Tulsa State Fair where I sold around 150 books as a vendor and my story was advertised on the news as well.”

EMPOWERING OTHERS

Raittia established Raittia Rogers Evangelism Ministries with a mission to share the transforming Gospel of Jesus Christ to prisoners, seniors, and the homeless by ministering outside the four walls of the church and showing God’s love. The nonprofit organization gives back to the community through outreach programs.

Raittia Rogers Evangelism Ministries also conducts workshops for youths in juvenile detention centers and schools, where they discuss crime prevention curriculum as detailed in Raittia’s book.

GROWING IN GRACE

“It feels wonderful to encourage others with my life story. My readers love when I have book signings at Barnes & Nobles and do book tours. I hope the readers remember me and the miraculous change that took place in my life and understand that their lives can be changed, too.

“My story made it to CBN 700 Club, an international platform that has millions of viewers. My dream is to leave a great legacy to not only my family but the entire world. My documentary film I Broke Out Of Prison (The Raittia Rogers Story) has been selected to be a part of the Greenwood Film Festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in August 2023. I’m excited about the role I played in a short scene on the grounds of Tyler Perry Studios, after being a guest on 106 Live Radio in Atlanta, Georgia. As the executive producer of the documentary, there’s definitely more great stuff coming soon.”

DRIVEN BY PURPOSE

“We have a prison ministry and a community outreach program that assists needy children and their families in different low-income apartments. Also, we have a seniors’ outreach program that is all about ministry to our elderly, a disaster relief program, an annual back to school event, and an Angel Christmas program that provides Christmas presents to children whose parents or guardians are incarcerated, and to kids whose parents cannot afford Christmas gifts for them.

“We do street evangelism to the homeless and anyone who needs a positive word, and pass out Angel Bags, from our “Angel Bag Project Campaign.” These are Ziplock bags filled with different snacks such as sandwiches, sodas, and bottles of water.”

“It took courage to write my story, but it was worth it when I see the countless people it has helped. Now I’m being asked for help by others to write their stories. I’m writing an anthology with 10 women who want to share their miraculous stories to help others break out of prison, out of whatever situation is holding them in bondage. All the hard work is finished, and I’m excited to announce that I Broke Out Of Prison 2, an inspirational anthology, will be released in 2023.

“I’m a midwife helping others around the world, not just in my city, to write their miraculous stories, to elevate men and women to break free, speak the truth, and not be silent. Their stories should be told regardless of what others think, because they provide healing for us.”

GOING THE DISTANCE

“Next up is traveling even more and interviewing others to give them an opportunity

to share their stories on my I Broke Out of Prison podcast. Also, I will be doing more filming and book collaborations. Men are invited to the table; after all, they too have miraculous stories to tell. I even inspired my mother to allow me to write her miraculous story.”

A screening for the I Broke Out of Prison documentary will be held at The Roxy Theater in Muskogee, OK, Sunday, June 4, 2023, 3:00 PM. Following the screening of the documentary, there will be a comprehensive Q & A session with Raittia. This event is for all ages but is a must-see film for youths.
