by Ann Marie Bryan
Dr. Elaine Bryan has spent her life breaking barriers and creating opportunities for others. A visionary leader, mentor, and powerhouse in diplomacy, real estate, education, and financial empowerment, she has built a legacy rooted in service and impact. Whether she is advocating for U.S.-Jamaica relations, mentoring the next generation of leaders, or fostering economic opportunities, Dr. Bryan leads with purpose and commitment to excellence.
As Honorary Consul for Jamaica in Atlanta, Georgia, she has redefined diplomacy, ensuring that the Jamaican diaspora is supported, connected, and empowered. But her mission extends far beyond consular duties—it is about building bridges between nations, expanding trade partnerships, and creating lasting economic and educational opportunities. Through initiatives such as financial literacy programs and STEAM mentorship, Dr. Bryan has committed herself to uplifting communities and preparing future generations for success.
Her remarkable journey is not one of privilege, but of perseverance and vision. From her middle-class upbringing in Jamaica to becoming a globally recognized leader, Dr. Bryan exemplifies determination, faith, and self-discipline. She stands by her own guiding principle, The What What What Approach™ – What you do with what you have determines what you become. This philosophy has fueled her relentless pursuit of excellence, enabling her to shatter glass ceilings, turn obstacles into opportunities, and inspire countless others to rise above limitations.
Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Bryan draws strength and partnership from her husband, Gregory Bryan, an engineer, systems analyst, and accomplished musician. Together, they collaborate on local and international projects through The Elaine Bryan Foundation, extending their impact in education, leadership development, and philanthropy.
In her exclusive interview with VBD Magazine, Dr. Bryan was exceptional—authentic, passionate, and deeply committed to her mission. She is a transformational leader and a force for change, whose legacy will pave the way for generations to come.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Dr. Bryan attended Excelsior High and Kingston Technical High before embarking on a journey of higher education, professional growth, and service. She pursued her studies at Northwestern University, the University of West Georgia, and Leadership Sandy Springs—institutions that shaped her into the dynamic leader she is today.
“During my childhood, I have always had a desire to serve others and to help the less fortunate,” Dr. Bryan reveals. “I was head girl and president of my high school in Jamaica, and even then, I had a deep passion for leadership and serving others, always striving to make a positive impact on my peers and community.”
Her early professional career included working with Air Jamaica and the Jamaica Public Service Company before migrating to the United States in 1987. With a strong academic background in education and leadership, she became an educator, mentor, and guidance counselor, later transitioning into the real estate industry, where she built a thriving business and a strong reputation for integrity and excellence.
Appointed on October 1, 2018, Dr. Bryan became Honorary Consul for Jamaica in Atlanta after the resignation of Judge Jewel Scott. Now in her seventh year as Honorary Consul, she has served thousands of Jamaicans across the Atlanta metro area and beyond, offering support, resources, and guidance to strengthen their legal, economic, and social standing in the United States. Her role includes assisting with:
● Passport renewals and citizenship matters through the Passport, Immigration & Citizenship Agency (PICA).
● Emergency travel certificates and work permits.
● Providing aid to Jamaicans in economic or civic hardship.
● Advocating for investment and trade opportunities between Georgia and Jamaica.
A champion of economic diplomacy, Dr. Bryan has worked tirelessly to enhance business partnerships between Jamaica and Georgia. Through networking initiatives, investment discussions, and cultural exchanges, she has promoted trade, tourism, and foreign investment opportunities for both regions.
“My mission is to create lasting relationships between Jamaica and the State of Georgia. Improving trade and investment is one of my highest priorities,” Dr. Bryan states.
EXCELLENCE IS MY FOUNDATION, GUIDED BY INTEGRITY, LOYALTY, RESPECT, AND KINDNESS. OVER THE YEARS, TREATING PEOPLE WITH KINDNESS AND RESPECT HAS BECOME SECOND NATURE. WHEN WORKING IN A ‘PEOPLE BUSINESS,’ A GENUINE LOVE FOR OTHERS IS ESSENTIAL. I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT A PERSON’S WORD SHOULD HOLD VALUE— HONORING COMMITMENTS AND KEEPING PROMISES ARE KEY TO BUILDING A STRONG REPUTATION.
One of her greatest achievements was leading the first-ever Passport, Immigration & Citizenship Agency (PICA) outreach, which assisted over 2,000 Jamaicans in securing legal documentation and consular services.
Beyond consular affairs, Dr. Bryan is a fierce advocate for trade, investment, and business development. She believes that economic collaboration between Jamaica and the U.S. is key to fostering sustainable growth. Through her efforts, she has:
● Connected Jamaican entrepreneurs with investors in Georgia.
● Promoted real estate, tourism, and business development between both regions.
● Engaged in high-level discussions on U.S.-Jamaica trade agreements.
During a special guest lecture at the University of Georgia’s School of Law, she spoke on “Investment Opportunities in Jamaica,” emphasizing the role of business process outsourcing, agribusiness, and entertainment industries.
“International trade is vital to economic development. We must create pathways for investment and opportunity.”
A lifelong educator, Dr. Bryan has trans-
formed the lives of thousands of students through her mentorship and scholarship programs. She is the Founder and Chairperson of The Elaine Bryan Foundation (EBF)—a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to youth development, education, and mentorship. As a Registered Microsoft Education Partner, she created the Microsoft-EBF STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Mentorship Program, providing:
● Laptops for students in need.
● Internships at Microsoft, Google, and other tech giants.
● Scholarships and career opportunities for underprivileged youth.
Her belief in educational empowerment has also led to strategic partnerships with universities, businesses, and community organizations. Through her foundation, she has:
● Helped students secure thousands of dollars in scholarships.
● Launched career counseling programs to prepare youth for professional success.
● Created college readiness workshops and digital learning initiatives.
Her Thriving with Technology series has been instrumental in guiding students toward success. “I believe in supporting students academically, emotionally, and financially. Education is the key to empowerment. I want to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in a competitive world.”
The Elaine Bryan Foundation will celebrate its 15th Anniversary with a special Inspirational Luncheon on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at 11 AM at The Buckhead Club, 3344 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta, GA 30326. The event will bring together corporate leaders to commemorate this milestone. For more details, visit www. elainebryanfoundation.com.
In addition to her diplomatic and philanthropic work, Dr. Bryan is a highly respected real estate expert. As the owner of Elaine Bryan Realty, she has built a successful brokerage that serves a diverse clientele of over 30,000 people.
MY MISSION IS TO CREATE LASTING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN JAMAICA AND THE STATE OF GEORGIA. IMPROVING TRADE AND INVESTMENT IS ONE OF MY HIGHEST PRIORITIES.
“Excellence is my foundation, guided by integrity, loyalty, respect, and kindness. Over the years, treating people with kindness and respect has become second nature. When working in a ‘people business,’ a genuine love for others is essential. I firmly believe that a person’s word should hold value—honoring commitments and keeping promises are key to building a strong reputation. Trust takes years to establish, and I prioritize maintaining relationships built on reliability and respect. My guiding principle is, ‘What you do with what you have determines what you become.’ I not only live by this philosophy but also strive to uplift and support others whenever I can.”
Her reputation as an expert in the housing market earned her a spot as a real estate commentator on HGTV and Fine Living Channel’s “What You Get for the Money.” She has also authored several “Financial Freedom Columns,” educating readers on wealth-building strategies, homeownership, and financial literacy.
“Real estate is one of the best investments one can make. It’s about creating long-term wealth and stability. Homeownership is the foundation of financial security. My goal is to help others build wealth through smart real estate investments.”
Her philosophy is simple: Invest wisely, educate yourself, and secure financial freedom for future generations.
Dr. Bryan’s dedication, leadership, and service have earned her multiple prestigious awards. She was honored with
the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, signed by President Joe Biden, recognizing her 4,000+ hours of service to the Jamaican diaspora, the Caribbean, and the U.S. She also received the President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award, established by President George W. Bush to honor exceptional volunteers. The awards were presented at a ceremony held on May 20, 2022, in Orlando, Florida, making her the first Caribbean-born person in Georgia to receive both distinctions.

and public service have made her an influential figure both locally and globally.
“Success requires adaptation,” Dr. Bryan asserts. “The pandemic changed how we do business, but it also presented opportunities to innovate.”
Like many leaders, Dr. Bryan faced unexpected challenges during the COVID-19
SOW GOOD SEEDS. DO THE RIGHT THING. IT’S EASIER; YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE LOOKING BEHIND YOU. LIVE WELL WITH PEOPLE. INVEST IN YOURSELF.

the Atlanta Hawks for charity.

Dr. Bryan takes great pride in celebrating the achievements of the Jamaican diaspora. “I have organized and implemented the inaugural ‘Jamaican Pioneers of Georgia’ event viewed by 80,000 people to showcase Jamaicans and their U.S.born children,” she shares.
This groundbreaking initiative highlights the contributions of Jamaican-Americans in various sectors, including business, education, healthcare, arts, and public service. It serves as a platform to recognize excellence, foster cultural pride, and strengthen community connections across generations. Building on this mission, the fourth annual Jamaican Pioneers in Georgia celebration took place virtually on Saturday, March 23, 2024, continuing the tradition of honoring trailblazers who uplift and inspire their communities.
For Dr. Bryan, success is not just measured by personal achievements, it is defined by the lives she touches, the barriers she breaks, and the opportunities she creates for others. This commitment to service drives her impact across multiple arenas, including:
● Advocating for economic diplomacy as Honorary Consul for Jamaica.
● Mentoring students and professionals through The Elaine Bryan Foundation.
● Empowering families through real estate and financial literacy.
● Speaking on leadership and purpose to audiences worldwide.
Her philosophy is simple: “Sow good seeds. Do the right thing. It’s easier; you don’t have to be looking behind you. Live well with people. Invest in yourself.”
As she continues to inspire, lead, and elevate others, one thing is certain—Dr. Bryan is not just making history, she is shaping the future.

he moment we stepped into the cozy, sunlit office of Steve and Alicia Johnson, it was impossible to ignore the warmth radiating between them. It wasn’t just the soft, knowing glances they exchanged or the way their laughter intertwined like a well-rehearsed melody—it was something deeper, something rare. Love was in the air, and it was utterly contagious.
Married for 42 years, this powerhouse couple has dedicated their lives to helping others cultivate the kind of love that not only lasts but thrives. With over 30 years of combined experience in relationship counseling and trauma therapy, Steve and Alicia have built a reputation as some of the most sought-after couples therapists in the country. Their approach isn’t about fairy tale endings or picture-perfect partnerships; it’s about doing the work, making the decisions, and choosing love again and again.
So, what’s their secret? How do two people, after decades of marriage and a career immersed in the complexities of human relationships, continue to look at each other as if they’ve just fallen in love? As we settled in for our conversation, one thing became clear—Steve and Alicia Johnson don’t merely talk about love. They embody it.
Alicia was born and raised in the breathtaking coastal town of Carmel, California. As the eldest of five children, she was raised by a single mother who took on responsibilities far beyond her years. Her childhood was marked by resilience and determination, qualities that would later define her career and personal growth.
Steve, in contrast, grew up in Sacramento, California, as one of seven children. Raised by parents heavily involved in ministry, he experienced the power of faith and service firsthand. Being the youngest son, he learned early the values of perseverance, leadership, and the significance of strong relationships. Their paths could not have been more different, yet fate had a way of intertwining their stories.
Steve married his bride and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he pursued his calling in ministry. Meanwhile, Alicia encountered significant challenges along her journey. A high school dropout, she faced the harsh realities of teen pregnancy when she gave birth to her first daughter at just 17 years old. However, her story did not end there. With a strong commitment to personal growth, Alicia earned her GED at 36, proving that it is never too late to chase your dreams. But she didn’t stop there. At 52 years old, Alicia proudly received her bachelor’s degree in psychology, highlighting the power of resilience and perseverance. Four years later, she pushed her limits even further, completing a master’s degree in Addiction Counseling—a testament to her dedication to helping others heal.
Steve and Alicia openly admit that when they first got married, they had no mentors and little understanding of what makes a marriage thrive. Alicia’s faith journey began just six months before she started dating Steve, and their relationship moved quickly—six months after dating, they were married. While their love was strong, they were unprepared for the challenges that lay ahead.
Alicia endured a traumatic childhood, taking care of her younger siblings while her single mother battled mental illness. She had two children before marrying Steve, and after they wed, the buried trauma from her past started to resurface, placing tremendous strain on their new marriage.
Steve entered the marriage with his own set of expectations. Committed to his faith and a life of celibacy, he envisioned marriage as a picture-perfect partnership. Alicia, on the other hand, expected her “knight in shining armor” to provide the stability and love she had longed for. However, just three days into their marriage, Alicia found herself feeling the loneliest she had ever been. Triggers from her past sent her into emotional turmoil, and their relationship quickly turned upside down.
Their marriage was marked by growing pains, heated arguments, and challenging moments. Alicia, feeling trapped by her
unresolved trauma, often wanted to escape. Steve, always one to discuss issues, would try to stop her from leaving. One unforgettable night, as Alicia rushed out of the house, Steve jumped onto the hood of her car to prevent her from driving away.
Throughout it all, Steve remained patient and responded to Alicia’s anger with love and understanding. He consistently asked for forgiveness, even when he wasn’t at fault, in an effort to keep their marriage intact. But one night, when Alicia once again declared she was leaving, Steve did something different. He went to the closet, pulled out a suitcase, and began packing her clothes. With a calm and steady voice, he said:
“I cannot continue to live like this. I am in this for the long haul. If you are not, I need you to leave.”
At that moment, Alicia realized she truly didn’t want to leave. Something shifted. Steve then made a simple request: “Promise me that you will never use the words ‘divorce’ or ‘separation’ in our marriage again.”
Alicia agreed. From that day on, their arguments transformed. Instead of threats and ultimatums, they dedicated entire nights to discussing their issues. They started reading marriage books, studying the Bible, and actively working toward healing their relationship. Their marriage evolved. Friends began to notice the change and sought their advice. They started leading several small groups of hundreds of people within their church. God guided them through their faith journey and taught them the power of resilience. What began as personal growth
became their life’s work—helping other couples navigate the ups and downs of love, just as they had done. Now, decades later, Steve and Alicia Johnson are counselors and living proof that love can be restored, that trauma can be healed, and that commitment can conquer even the darkest moments.
Steve and Alicia are thrilled about their holistic approach to behavioral and mental health. They stress that their center is not solely focused on mental wellness but on embracing the entire human experience— mind, body, and spirit. Their faith has been the foundation of their marriage, and they are passionate about sharing it with others.
“We know that we can be friends and lovers, and we understand that this could not have happened for us without God,” Alicia says. “Many people possess information and expertise. We offer impartation. Once a couple begins talking with us, they will never be the same.”
Transparency is essential in their sessions. They share their own stories, fostering an environment where clients feel safe to be vulnerable, open, and honest. Unlike many therapists, who require multiple sessions to dismantle barriers, Steve and Alicia facilitate profound breakthroughs in the very first session.
They also offer unique experiences to couples at Longevity Behavioral Health Center. Their signature Date Night Experiences provide couples with an opportunity to reconnect through thoughtfully curated events. Each date night features a theme and includes activities like dancing, guided conversation topics, and shared meals, creating an environment conducive to love. These successful events will be accessible through their website and social media channels.
Their mission is straightforward: to transform relationships through faith, transparency, and immersive experiences. They are more than just counselors; they are relationship architects, constructing lasting love, one couple at a time.
In Steve and Alicia’s book, Longevity: Loving for a Lifetime, the title itself, Longevity, signifies spanning time—and that’s exactly what Steve and Alicia’s principles aim to achieve. They emphasize that love is not merely a feeling; it is a choice. The book outlines time-tested principles that have been effective in their own marriage and in marriages worldwide, including:
● Serving one another

Their book is unique in that instead of a traditional foreword, it includes stories from its clients—real-life testimonials that inspire others. The authors hope that these principles will inspire relationships to fight for their love and provide couples with faith-based, actionable tools for lasting commitment.
While working in the safe house, Alicia met women who have faced abuse since childhood. Their often horrific stories reflect parts of her own past. By being open about her journey, Alicia has forged deep, meaningful connections with these women, fostering a safe space for healing.
“When they realize that I’m open about my story and speak their language, they let their guards down,” Alicia explains. “They allow me to step in as a mother figure—someone they never felt protected by in their past.” Many of these women carry deep mother wounds, and Alicia embraces the role of nurturer, offering the love and protection they’ve never known.
As a counselor, Alicia wears many hats, adjusting her approach to meet the unique needs of each individual. Her personal experiences with trauma and healing enable

her to break down barriers more quickly and foster trust with her clients. This work has not only shaped her perspective on healing but has also enhanced her addiction counseling efforts, as she comprehends the deep-rooted pain behind substance abuse and self-destructive behaviors.
Alicia shares, “My experiences have enabled me to connect with my clients on a profoundly personal level, nurturing trust through shared pain and guiding them toward transformation, forgiveness, and self-worth.”
Reflecting on his journey to leadership, Steve considers the significance of self-identity, responsibility, and letting God heal the broken places within.
“The empowerment that comes from the presence of God is very real,” Steve says. “If I can impart that to another man, it can change his life.” Steve has a unique ability to recognize potential in others and draw it out, particularly in men who struggle with father wounds. He has become a father figure to many, mentoring them in their personal and relational growth. His experiences in marriage have taught him valuable lessons about being a partner, which inspire him to help men become better husbands and leaders in their relationships.
“One day, God spoke to me and said, ‘Alicia is a diamond in the rough. I want you to love her until she shines.’ That moment transformed my whole perspective on marriage,” Steve recalls. When Steve interacts with men, he sees and hears things that inspire him to push them toward their highest potential. Many leaders fail to recognize their own strengths, and
Steve considers it a privilege to help them uncover their abilities. “When I am invited to speak or train in corporations and churches, I see it as an honor,” he says. “Iron sharpens iron, and I believe it is my privilege to share the wisdom I’ve gained through my own experiences.”
For Steve and Alicia Johnson, marriage revolves around divine purpose. As relationship coaches, they’ve encountered a frequent challenge among dating, premarital, and married couples: a lack of alignment.
“Couples often fail to see that they are together for a purpose,” Steve explains. “Without this understanding, there is no vision to keep them aligned.”
One of the most significant mindset shifts they advocate is viewing a spouse as a gift from God, rather than as someone to fix or change. “Your spouse is a gift from God,” Alicia shares. “When you embrace that truth, gratitude and love naturally follow.”
They also challenge the traditional roles in marriage. “A husband’s role is to mirror Christ, and a wife’s role is to reflect the Holy Spirit,” Steve explains. “It’s not about chores; it’s about divine design.”
Finally, they emphasize that personal wholeness is the foundation of a strong relationship. “If you don’t love yourself,
you can’t truly love someone else,” Alicia adds. “God’s ongoing process is to bring you to wholeness, so you have something to enhance your mate.”
By aligning with purpose, embracing biblical truths, and focusing on personal growth, couples can cultivate a love that lasts a lifetime.
For couples who feel they’ve reached a dead end but are still willing to fight for their relationship, Steve and Alicia Johnson offer one vital piece of advice: choose your counselor carefully.
“If you own a Mercedes and it needs repairs, you wouldn’t take it to a Kia dealership,” Alicia explains. “The same applies to counseling. Find someone with a proven track record—someone who can genuinely guide you toward love and healing.” As a husband-and-wife team, Steve and Alicia offer a unique approach. “We counsel couples together to ensure there’s no bias,” Alicia shares. “We lead by example, sharing our own journey to demonstrate that healing is attainable.”
They also challenge the stigma surrounding counseling. “Seeking help doesn’t mean you’re failing; it means you’re wise,” Steve says. “When we’re deep in a problem, we often can’t see ourselves clearly. A skilled counselor will shift the focus from blaming your spouse to personal
growth.” Their ultimate message? Your spouse is not the enemy. “The closer you grow to God, the closer you grow to each other,” Alicia adds. “Healing starts with recognizing the real battle—and choosing to fight for love together.”
When asked to describe each other, their admiration is undeniable.
Smiling, Alicia shares, “Steve loves his wife and children more than anything else in the world. He’s patient, tender, and passionate about people. But if anything threatens his family, he’s like a bulldog— loyal to a fault.”
Steve beams as he describes Alicia. “She’s completely genuine, without any pretense. She connects with people effortlessly, an incredible communicator who loves deeply. Her insights are unparalleled—she sees beyond mere words. She possesses a prophetic quality that uplifts and challenges people, and when she prays, things change.”
The couple wholeheartedly embraces their shared legacy of impact. “We’re here to conquer the world and die empty,” says Steve. “Everything God placed in us, we will accomplish. There’s no such thing as growing old—we will only improve. We’ll bear fruit in every season, fresh and full of life, until the very end.”

With a diverse background spanning the corporate world, entrepreneurship, and education, Shirley Mathew’s path has been one of continuous evolution—personally, professionally, and spiritually. But her most profound transformation came when she stepped into her true calling: helping others reclaim their power through soul coaching.
As a Certified Soul Coaching® Practitioner, Shirley blends her wealth of experience to guide individuals, especially parents and educators, toward self-awareness, authenticity, and empowerment. Through her platform, Train Every Muscle, she equips people with the tools they need to rewrite their personal narratives and create lasting change in their own lives and in the lives of those they serve.
Shirley’s personal journey has been deeply intertwined with love, faith, and self-reflection. Her bond with her husband, which began when she was just 11 years old, has been a constant source of strength and growth. Throughout their 18-year marriage, Shirley and her husband have navigated life’s challenges with friendship and faith as their foundation. Together, they are raising two teenagers—who, in many ways, have served as catalysts for Shirley’s own healing journey.
During her Zoom interview with VBD Magazine, Shirley shared her inspiring journey and the transformative power of soul coaching. With a calm, reassuring presence, she offered a glimpse into her practice—demonstrating how moments of introspection and guided self-awareness can create shifts in mindset, ultimately leading to lasting transformation.
Shirley was born in Houston, Texas, to Indian immigrant parents, but at a young age, her family relocated to New York, bringing a major cultural shift. She describes the transition as “a complete culture shock,” moving from a suburban Texas life to the fast-paced, high-energy atmosphere of New York City.
After earning her Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from Pace University in New York, Shirley felt a strong pull to return to Texas. “I always knew I wanted to go back, but I didn’t know how the door would open. I just knew New York wasn’t for me, and if I stayed, I wouldn’t make it,” she recalls.
Shirley’s faith played an integral role in her journey. “I started my spiritual journey after college. I attended church frequently, accepted Christ, and things began shifting internally. Living in New York, I just felt like I was coming out of alignment, with the fast-paced lifestyle that didn’t match where my heart was leading me.”
After returning to Texas, Shirley followed a familiar pattern—entering the corporate
world and adopting the hustle-and-grind mindset she had learned in New York. In the corporate space, she developed a strong foundation in leadership, problem-solving, and fostering meaningful connections. However, she soon realized that while professional success was fulfilling in some ways, it lacked the deeper purpose she craved.
The desire for deeper impact continued to stir within her, leading Shirley to explore paths that blended her skills, passion, and a greater sense of purpose. She transitioned into entrepreneurship, running her own business. Yet, it was her seven years as a teacher that truly ignited her passion for guiding and nurturing others.
“I was laid out on the floor journaling, asking God, ‘What is my purpose? I don’t understand. You pulled me out of teaching, out of everything that I thought was grounding me.’ And the words kept coming back to me: Soul Coach.”
At first, she hesitated. “It went against everything I had been taught. I was skeptical—it wasn’t traditional. But I could feel the Holy Spirit drawing me in. And when I finally trusted, I realized this was where I was meant to be. This is the work I was born to do.”
“I always questioned my journey. There was so much self-doubt, always looking externally for validation. My career path was unconventional—I took leaps of faith, shifting from corporate work to education, to business ownership. But every experience led me to this moment, where I realized I was being called to deeper healing work.”
Soul Coaching® is not therapy, but a deep, transformative process that helps individuals reconnect with their authentic selves and heal emotional wounds. At its core, soul coaching helps individuals:
● Release limiting beliefs and past traumas.
● Navigate life’s transitions with clarity and confidence.
● Develop mindfulness and self-awareness.
● Break free from the cycle of self-doubt and fear.
“We all carry inner stories—some serve us, some hold us back,” says Shirley. “Soul coaching allows us to unravel those stories, release what no longer serves us, and step into our full potential.”
With this discovery, Through Train Every Muscle, Shirley’s Soul Coaching® practice was established.
Whether through one-on-one coaching, group programs, or workshops, Shirley’s work is dedicated to helping individuals awaken to their true potential and create a ripple effect of positive change.
“We all carry within us the wisdom we seek,” Shirley explains. “My role is to help you quiet the noise, tune into your inner guidance, and step into the most empowered version of yourself.”
Through her coaching, Shirley helps individuals recognize that their past does not define their future. She is a firm believer that we all have the power to rewrite our stories, reclaim our purpose, and step into the life we are meant to live. “Every single one of us carries a story—some of it empowering, some of it limiting,” she says. “But the beautiful thing is that we have the power to rewrite that narrative at any moment.”
One of the key aspects of Shirley’s coaching practice is nervous system regulation.
“Most people are in a constant state of fight-or-flight without realizing it. Their bodies are in survival mode 24/7. Before we can truly heal, we have to calm the nervous system. That’s where breathwork and mindfulness come in.”
Shirley emphasizes that healing isn’t just about the mind—it’s about the body, too. “Trauma is stored in the body. If we don’t release it, it manifests as pain, tension, even illness. You can’t just pray it away. Healing requires action. Faith without works is dead. God gives us the tools—we have to use them. Through movement, breathwork, and mindfulness, we can begin to free ourselves.”
A key element of Shirley’s work is helping people break free from generational cycles.
“Many of the patterns we struggle with didn’t start with us. Studies show that DNA carries memories from up to 14 generations before us. That means the fears, doubts, and struggles we experience may not even be ours. But healing is our responsibility.”
By choosing to heal, individuals can rewrite their family’s narrative. “When I began this work, I saw the effects ripple through my family. My children, my husband, even my extended family—they all benefited. When one person heals, it shifts the entire bloodline.”
“Our children have reminded me of the importance of self-reflection and personal growth,” Shirley mentions. “Through parenting, I have learned that healing ourselves is one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children.”
This realization has fueled Shirley’s mission to help parents and educators break cycles of self-doubt, stress, and disconnection, allowing them to show up as the most empowered versions of themselves.
Through Train Every Muscle, Shirley helps parents and educators tap into their inner wisdom, break free from limiting beliefs, and embrace their full potential— not just for their own benefit, but for the children they guide.
Programs are designed to bridge the gap between intuitive connection and practical action, helping parents and educators to:
● Tap into their inner wisdom to connect with children on a deeper level.
● Identify and release emotional blocks that hinder personal growth.
● Rewrite their stories to break free from limiting beliefs and past conditioning.
● Create nurturing environments that foster emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.
“We believe that ‘How We Practice is How They Play.’ As parents, our actions and behaviors have a profound impact on our children’s development.”
Considering that, Shirley and her team help parents create a nurturing and playful environment for their families. Group parenting sessions are designed to provide valuable insights, practical strategies, and a supportive community of like-minded parents.
“We often think that parenting and teaching are about what we do, but it’s really about who we are,” Shirley states. “Children don’t just learn from our words—they absorb our energy, our beliefs, and our way of being. When we heal and empower ourselves, we naturally empower them.”
Coaching programs for educators are designed to improve student-teacher relationships, enhance classroom climate, reduce teacher burnout and turnover, and increase teacher retention. “We believe that investing in the well-being and professional development of teachers is essential in creating a supportive and enriching environment for children,” says Shirley. “By addressing the unique challenges faced by educators, our programs will have a positive ripple effect on the overall school system.”
Shirley’s work has now expanded beyond personal coaching—she is bringing her expertise to hospice care, helping families navigate grief with grace and acceptance.
“Loss is one of the hardest things we experience as humans. But if we can shift our perspective, we can find joy and miracles even in the midst of grief.”
Shirley is also working on a children’s book designed to help kids process grief in a healthy, empowering way. “This book will be for children, but also for adults. We were never taught how to navigate grief properly. I want to change that.”
As Shirley continues to expand her coaching practice, she remains committed to deepening her impact and reaching more individuals. She is currently working on developing new programs, workshops, and resources that will further support parents and educators in their personal and professional growth. Additionally, she is passionate about continuing the conversation around healing, empowerment, and soulful awareness, using her platform to inspire and educate a global audience.
For those ready to embark on their own journey of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment, Shirley Mathew is the soulful guide you’ve been looking for.

Angela Marie Johnson walked through trauma and emerged with a calling far greater than herself. As the visionary behind the bestselling book, He Sees You: The Naked Truth: Redeemed, she is on a mission to help women break free from the weight of shame, confront their deepest wounds, and step boldly into the purpose God has ordained for them. Through transformative conferences, mentorship programs, and commitment to truth, Angela is leading a movement of healing, restoration, and redemption.
With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication, Angela has built a thriv ing career as a Territory Manager in pharmaceutical sales. But her passion extends far beyond the corporate world. As a certified Life Coach with over a decade of experience in business devel opment, specializing in mental health and addiction, Angela has dedicated her life to guiding others toward wholeness. Her leadership is marked by authenticity, com passion, and an unshakable commitment to empowering those she serves, even in the most challenging circumstances.
In an exclusive interview with Magazine, Angela shares her journey— from childhood rejection and trauma to divine healing. Her journey reminds us that no past is too broken for God to redeem, and no wound is beyond His power to heal.
Angela’s journey be gan in Sacramento, California, as the youngest of four children. At just a year old, her family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where her parents devoted themselves to ministry.
“My father’s brother has a church in Atlanta, so we packed up and
drove across the country to do ministry together,” she recalled. “It was a miserable trip for me as a toddler—I just remember kicking and screaming the whole way.”
Growing up in a large family surrounded by talented cousins, Angela often felt like she didn’t quite fit in. “I was just this chocolate girl with an underbite, feeling like I wasn’t pretty enough, not talented enough. I tried to sing, but my voice wasn’t good enough to get a lead role. The enemy sowed seeds of rejection in me at a very young age.”
Then, at the age of six, her world shattered. “I was molested by someone from the church—someone my parents trusted. He was under their leadership, and his wife ran a daycare. Because my parents were so busy in ministry, I was often left in the care of others. That’s when it happened.”
When Angela finally found the courage to speak up, her parents pursued justice, but the courts ruled against her. “The judge didn’t believe me. They said I was coerced. That rejection planted even deeper roots of feeling like I wasn’t
Despite the trauma she endured, Angela pushed forward. She attended Stevenson High School and later graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a degree in Mass Communications.
But unresolved pain has a way of
“I carried that trauma into my adulthood, making choices from a place of brokenness,” she admitted. “I struggled with rejection, anxiety, and depression. I wanted to be seen, to be loved, to be validated, and that led me into toxic relationships.”
In 2017, Angela faced another heartbreaking moment—she had an abortion. “I made that decision out of fear. I was already a single mom, and I thought, ‘Who’s going to want me with two kids?’ I thought I was making the right choice, but the moment it was done, I felt overwhelming shame and regret.”
It wasn’t until she went to church that she encountered the grace of God in a new way. “A pastor came up to me and said, ‘God has already forgiven you, but you need to forgive yourself.’ I broke down. That was the
moment I realized my past didn’t have to define me.”
Through counseling, prayer, self-reflection, and therapy, Angela began to heal. But she knew she wasn’t the only woman carrying silent battles. That’s when He Sees You: The Naked Truth: Redeemed was born.
Angela founded The Naked Truth Redeemed as a movement to help women heal from past wounds through radical honesty and faith. Born from her own journey of brokenness, The Naked Truth Redeemed is evidence to the power of confronting deep wounds and allowing God to rewrite the narrative.
“I didn’t realize how broken I was,” Angela admits. “I was tired of repeating the same cycles and expecting different results. Finally, I made the decision to start therapy, surrender my life to Christ, and allow Him to redeem me from the labels I had tattooed on myself over the years.”
For Angela, being “naked” is about exposure—telling the truth and revealing the scars. But redemption? That’s where God steps in. “He applies His grace and rewrites your story.”
She challenges women to move beyond appearances and get real about the hidden struggles that often go unspoken. “We get so caught up in looking put together that we never deal with the root issues. But true healing comes when we confront the hard stuff—the things we don’t talk about in church, the things we think no one else will understand.”
At the heart of her mission is a truth that once felt out of reach but now fuels everything she does: “I spent so much of my life wanting to be seen. But all along, God was saying, ‘I see you. You are loved. You are enough.’ That’s what I want every woman to understand.”
Angela’s upcoming conference, Soul Restoration: Repairing the Fragmented
Soul, is set for July 18-19, 2025 and will address the deep wounds that hold women back.
“Our soul—our mind, will, and emotions—gets fragmented when we go through trauma. Abuse, rejection, heartbreak… all of it affects how we see ourselves and interact with the world. This conference is about getting to the root and finding healing.”
What sets her conferences apart is the inclusion of licensed professional counselors who provide both spiritual guidance and practical tools. “We don’t just talk about healing. We equip women with the tools to walk it out.”
One of the biggest struggles Angela sees in women is the cycle of shame and guilt. “We have to take responsibility for our healing. It’s easy to blame others, but healing starts when we stop playing the victim. We have to ask ourselves, ‘Am I really tired of settling? Am I ready for change?’”
Angela also understands the challenge of unsupportive circles—family and friends who try to keep women bound to their past. “Some people will never see you beyond who you used to be. That’s why it’s important to surround yourself with those who see where you’re going, not just where you’ve been.”
Her nonprofit, One Mom at a Time, focuses on empowering single mothers, believing that when a mother heals, she creates a better future for her children. “If we can help a mom, we help a child. If we support her mental health, help her get on her feet, then her children will have a better life.”
Alongside her conference and nonprofit work, Angela is preparing to launch her podcast, Naked Truth Conversations, where she will feature raw, unfiltered discussions with women who have overcome adversity.
“Our voices have been silenced for too long. This podcast is about giving women a platform to share their truth, no matter how messy it is. There is nothing too messy, too shameful, or too broken for God to redeem. The very thing you thought would destroy you—that’s the thing God will use to empower you. Your story isn’t over yet.”
Angela Marie Johnson is leading women into bold, unapologetic healing. The truth may be raw, but redemption is beautiful.
by Ann Marie Bryan CHAMPIONING JUSTICE AND EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES
As an immigrant child witnessing her father’s struggles with legal complexities, Honorable Juli Mathew was determined to help shape the future of justice. Today, she serves as the Presiding Judge of County Court at Law 3 in Fort Bend County, Texas, making history—not once, but twice—as the first Indian American woman elected to the bench in the United States and the first Asian American woman elected in Fort Bend County. But her path to the bench was far from conventional.
“I never wanted to be a judge, never thought about being a judge, had no interest in being a judge,” she admitted. Yet, life had other plans. With a heart for justice and a calling that wouldn’t be ignored, she took a leap of faith—one that required sacrifice, perseverance, and a commitment to serving her community.
Defying expectations, Judge Mathew stepped into the unknown, proving that leadership is not about titles but about service. In this exclusive VBD Magazine feature, she shares her journey from Kerala, India, to the Texas courtroom, the challenges she overcame, and the faith that keeps her anchored in the face of adversity. She also discusses her passion for justice, the programs she has pioneered, and her mission to create lasting change.
Born in Kerala, India, Judge Mathew spent her early childhood immersed in the rich traditions of her homeland before immigrating to the United States at age ten. Her family settled in Chicago, but the harsh winters prompted a move to Philadelphia, where her father ran a gas station. It was there that she witnessed firsthand the power—and danger—of legal knowledge.
Her father’s business partner, a man with legal training, manipulated contracts and finances, leaving our family struggling to stay afloat. “He had gone to law school, so he knew a lot of the laws and things
of that nature,” Judge Mathew recalled. “My dad didn’t know what to do. I saw a lot of confusion and chaos in my home, and I thought to myself, if I know the law, there’s no way somebody can take advantage of me.”
That conviction led her to pursue a career in law, earning her undergraduate degree from Penn State University and her Juris Doctorate from Delaware Law School.
Even with years of legal experience under her belt, Judge Mathew never envisioned herself as a judge, until others started encouraging her to run. In Texas, county judgeships are elected positions, and community leaders saw her as a strong candidate.
“I almost considered it in 2012,” she admitted. “I expressed my interest, but I was told that the judge in that seat was well-liked, and my chances of winning were slim. On top of that, I was told it would take about US$85,000 to run a campaign, and that scared me off.”
She backed out, only to later learn that the judge had passed away unexpectedly during the race. “If I had been in the race, my name would have been out there, and I could have won,” she reflected.
When 2016 arrived and national conversations turned to immigration policies and naturalized citizenship, Judge Mathew felt a sense of urgency. As a naturalized U.S. citizen herself, she understood what was at stake. “The judiciary is the last line of defense for the rights of citizens,” she said. “I felt qualified, and I felt called.”
So, she ran—and in 2018, she made history as the first Indian American woman elected to the bench in the United States and the first Asian American judge in Fort Bend County, Texas.
As the Presiding Judge of County Court at Law 3, Judge Mathew oversees a diverse docket of cases, including criminal, civil, juvenile, probate, and mental health matters. But her role extends far beyond the courtroom.
She spearheaded the creation of Fort Bend County’s first Juvenile Intervention and Mental Health (JIMH) Court, a specialty court designed to address the needs of young people struggling with mental health challenges. “We only have a small window to help these kids before they go down a path that leads to prison,” she explained. “We need to intervene early.”
With an 85% success rate, JIMH provides counseling, probation support, and critical resources for at-risk youth. Judge Mathew’s team ensures these juveniles have access to food, clothing, and stable environments. “One of the boys in our program wasn’t going to school because he only had one dirty shirt. That’s something we can fix,” she said. “We’re not just handing out punishments, we’re changing lives.”
She also launched Kitchen to the Courthouse, an initiative that brings female trailblazers together to share their journeys of breaking barriers. The name is symbolic: “Women cook in homes across the world but look at Michelin-starred restaurants—they’re still dominated by
men. This is about taking women from behind the scenes and putting them in leadership positions.”
Another of her programs, Chai & Chat, creates opportunities for the community to meet local leaders and understand how government works.
As a woman of color in the legal field, Judge Mathew has faced racism, sexism, and skepticism—sometimes all at once.
“There were times when I walked into a courtroom, and people assumed I wasn’t an attorney,” she recalled. “I’ve been dismissed, spoken down to, and even treated like a child.”
One particular incident stands out. She had entered a courtroom and opened her laptop to get some work done while waiting for her case to be called. She was unaware that there was a rule against electronic devices in that court. “The bailiff yelled at me, made me leave the courtroom, and forced me to read the sign on the door out loud,” she said. “Looking back, I realize how absurd it was. But it was a moment that reminded me how far we still have to go.”
Even after her election, challenges persisted. “People weren’t necessarily happy to see someone like me in this position. There were attacks, there was resistance,” she admitted. “But I kept reminding myself: ‘No weapon formed against me shall prosper.’”
The verse from Isaiah is embroidered inside her judicial robe, a reminder of the faith that sustains her.
Despite the demands of her career, Judge Mathew remains deeply committed to her family. She and her husband, now fully supportive of her role, work together to raise their three daughters. “It’s all about balance,” she said. “I try to schedule events so that I can still be present for my kids. Sometimes, I take them with me to events so I’m not just leaving them behind.”
Judge Mathew also prioritizes family vacations, using them as an opportunity to educate her children about the world. “It’s not just about making memories— it’s about giving them experiences that shape their perspectives,” she said. The family’s next big adventure? A trip to South Africa, complete with a safari and historical site visits.
Judge Mathew is now in her second term and is already preparing for re-election in 2026. “Campaigning never really stops,” she said. “The hardest part is the fundraising. It takes about $150,000 to $200,000 just to run this race.”
Beyond the election, her focus remains on expanding community programs, advocating for mental health reform, and
mentoring young women and minorities in the legal field.
As for what the future holds? “I love being a judge,” she said. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had. But if I ever feel led to serve in another way, I’ll be open to that.”
For now, Judge Juli Mathew remains steadfast in her mission—to uphold justice, empower communities, and create opportunities for those who come after her. Her story is proof that one person can make a difference, one decision can change a life, and one act of courage can open doors for generations to come.
And she’s just getting started.

Sheryl H. Boldt’s journey is one of raw struggles and extraordinary redemption. She has battled depression, eating disorders, and personal loss— yet today, she stands as a voice of hope and proof that God’s healing power can transform even the darkest moments. As a Sales Executive for Wave 94, author of the faith-based blog Today Can Be Different, and faith guest columnist, she uses her platform to uplift, encourage, and inspire.
But Sheryl’s impact goes far beyond the written word. She lives out her faith daily—mentoring women, leading accountability groups, and walking in the truth of God’s transforming grace. “I know what it’s like to feel hopeless, to wonder if life (or I) will ever change,” she shares. “But I also know the freedom of being lifted from that darkness and experiencing God’s incredible love and mercy.”
In this compelling interview with VBD Magazine, Sheryl shares her journey from brokenness to restoration, the inspiration behind her writing, and how faith fuels everything she does.
Sheryl’s story begins in Sharonville, Ohio, near Cincinnati, where she and her four siblings were born. Her family later moved to Slidell, Louisiana, after her father was offered a promotion with General Electric. She attended Slidell High School, graduating in 1974, and later studied at Louisiana State University for two and a half years before stepping away from formal education to start a family.
However, life took unexpected turns. Her first marriage ended when she faced a period of struggle, battling anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and major depression— challenges that eventually led to a painful separation from her young children.
“I suffered many setbacks, but God’s mercy and grace sustained me,” she says. “I can now testify that I’ve been free from all of that for more than 20 years!”
Sheryl’s story is not just about overcoming personal struggles; it’s about using those experiences to minister to others.
“I’m a strong believer in the power of God to redeem me—and my life!” she affirms. “Because of my past battles, I love to tell others about God’s ability to transform and restore lives.”
Today, Sheryl works from home for a Tallahassee Christian radio station, WAKU/Wave 94.1, where she serves as a sales representative, writer and producer of radio ads, including voiceovers. She also leads Women of the Word, a ladies accountability group – and is honored to teach Children’s Church at Lanark Community Church with her husband, Bert.
And when she’s not mentoring, writing, or speaking? You’ll find her enjoying laughing with her husband – and spending time with their (combined) eight perfectly brilliant children and eight grandchildren.
Sheryl’s passion for writing was ignited at an early age as she watched her mother, an aspiring author, pecking away at a Royal manual typewriter. Inspired by her mother’s love for storytelling, she began crafting fiction and non-fiction works, many of which have since been published in respected magazines such as Focus on the Family, CBN, War Cry, Upper Room, Purpose, and Christian Living in the Mature Years.
Her award-winning short story, My Husband Gave Me 30 Days, was featured in the anthology Personal Titanic Moments.
But her most well-known work is her faith-based blog, Today Can Be Different—a space where she shares transparent, hope-filled devotionals that touch the hearts of many.
“I chose the title Today Can Be Different when I was wrestling with procrastination,” she explains. “Day after day, I’d go to bed frustrated that I’d ‘wasted’ another day. As I spent time in God’s Word, He reminded me of His resurrection power that lives in me and that He had given me the power of self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7 NIV). I chose to believe it and act as one who had a disciplined nature. When I did, I began to experience victory and better days.”
Her Today Can Be Different devotionals have been featured in 35+ newspapers across the South—and they’re now expanding into the North.
“It is my continued prayer that God will guide me as I write for His purpose,” she says. “Often when I read my column in one of the newspapers, I become aware that the Holy Spirit, Himself, inspired my writing and yet allows me to put my name on it.”
Sheryl writes about topics that are deeply personal—forgiving others, respecting your husband, trusting God’s sovereignty, and overcoming depression.
“For almost 30 years, I struggled with clinical depression and suicidal thoughts,” she shares. “For 26 of those years, I was a born-again, Bible-believing Christian. This means that, off and on for 26 years, I was what many would consider a spiritual oxymoron—a suicidal Christian.”
Her struggles as a mother were especially painful. “As much as I loved my kids, I didn’t know how to live with the chronic anxiety that pervaded my being,” she recalls. “The lies that kept me awake night after night convinced me that my children were better off without me.”
Now, Sheryl seeks to encourage others who wrestle with depression and suicidal thoughts. “I want those who struggle to know that God can reach into their darkness and bring them into His glorious light,” she says.
She also speaks to those who have lost loved ones to suicide. “I lost a dear friend to suicide, and it still affects me today. I want to assure those who have been affected that God’s compassion and grace is available to them for as long as they need Him.”
For aspiring writers who feel hesitant to step out in faith, Sheryl offers this advice: “Journal. Whether with pen and notebook or on a laptop, write down what’s in your heart. Journal about the areas you’re struggling with. Be candid about your sense of failure and how much you need God’s intervention. Although you won’t share everything from your journal when you write for others, you’ll benefit from being honest with yourself and God. Then, write a rough draft for publication, praying as you write. Later, perhaps the next day, read what you wrote and shape it into an article or book chapter. Most
of all, be as real and transparent as you can. Your transparency will give your writing authenticity.”
She also shares a powerful lesson about perseverance: “I wrestle with disappointment for not obtaining a book contract yet. But God reminds me to trust His sovereignty and timing.”
Sheryl is stepping into an exciting new season with several impactful projects in the works:
● Children’s Book Series – She is actively seeking a publisher for her collection of children’s books, hoping to inspire young minds with faith-filled stories.
● 40-Day Devotional – Today Can Be Different is her latest work-in-progress, a devotional designed to help readers break free from bad habits, overcome depression, and embrace God’s best for their lives.
● Mentorship and Ministry – She remains committed to leading Women of the Word and teaching Children’s Church, ensuring that both women and young hearts find deeper meaning in Scripture.
Through every endeavor, Sheryl’s mission is to guide others toward the same life-changing transformation she has experienced. “I hope people will discover with confidence that God is aware of their situation and their struggles,” she says. “He is listening and is actively involved, even in their simplest circumstances.”
As she reflects on her journey, Sheryl leaves us with this powerful question:
“What sin, addiction, or bad habit controls you? If you haven’t totally surrendered it (or your heart) to Christ, what better time to do so than now?
Sheryl H. Boldt’s writing, ministry, and personal testimony continue to impact lives, proving that when we place our brokenness in God’s hands, He makes all things new. “If you struggle with life choices and want to experience God’s transforming power, know that today can be different,” says Sheryl. “Experience His love and redemption for you today.”

Few individuals exemplify the relentless spirit of advocacy and service quite like Gauthami Vemula-Queijo. She is a consultant, educator, social entrepreneur, philanthropist, advocate, activist, and the force behind Color me SAFE, a lifeline for families navigating child welfare crises. But Gauthami’s journey was not paved with ease—it was shaped by survival, resilience, and an unyielding determination to turn pain into purpose. From her early roots in India to overcoming near-fatal trauma in college and witnessing the harsh realities of child protective services, Gauthami has emerged as a fearless warrior for the voiceless. Her story is a timely reminder that one person’s courage can light the way for countless others.
“When I reflect on my journey, five major influences have shaped who I am today— my early childhood in India, growing up in a small town in New Mexico, surviving dating violence in college, working at Child Protective Services, and finding my true passion through Color me SAFE and my marriage,” Gauthami shares.
Born in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India, Gauthami formed deep bonds with her extended family, carrying the warmth of her cultural roots into every aspect of her life. After a brief stay in New York, her family settled in Hobbs, New Mexico—an oil town where they were among the few South Asian families. “We built a close-knit community, celebrating every milestone together,” she recalls.
However, Gauthami college years were shadowed by a traumatic experience of dating violence—an ordeal that almost cost her life. “I entered a relationship that turned violent, lasting nearly a year and a half—long enough that my ex-boyfriend nearly took my life. That experience, as painful as it was, ignited my passion for wanting to help others going through trauma,” she says. Determined to reclaim her life, she pursued a bachelor’s degree in science, followed by a master’s in clinical psychology and counseling.
After graduate school, Gauthami briefly practiced as a therapist before relocating with her family to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex in 2001. There, she joined Child Protective Services (CPS) as a Sex Abuse Investigator. “One of my very first cases involved a threeyear-old girl who was raped by three men—a case I will never forget,” she says. Over nearly a decade at CPS, Gauthami witnessed the devastating impact of systemic inequalities, particularly on marginalized families with limited resources.
When her CPS training unit was disbanded in 2011, she knew it was time to step outside the system and create real change. In 2012, alongside a former CPS colleague, Gauthami co-founded Color me SAFE, a small consulting firm dedicated to helping families navigate child welfare crises, by providing guidance and solutions - particularly CPS involvement.
OVER THE YEARS, WE HAVE WORKED WITH FAMILIES, NONPROFITS, AND FAMILY LAW ATTORNEYS, ADVOCATING FOR THOSE CAUGHT IN AN OVERWHELMING SYSTEM. HOWEVER, MANY FAMILIES DESPERATELY NEEDED OUR HELP BUT COULDN’T AFFORD IT—SO WE OFTEN PROVIDED PRO-BONO SUPPORT.
“The idea of starting my own consulting firm was not surprising,” she explains. “During my years at CPS, families—particularly in the South Asian community— frequently reached out for guidance on navigating their cases. That experience became one of the driving forces behind launching my own firm.” She continues, “Over the years, we have worked with families, nonprofits, and family law attorneys, advocating for those caught in an overwhelming system. However,
ADVOCACY
ISN’T ABOUT COMPETITION— IT’S ABOUT COLLABORATION.
THE MOST EFFECTIVE ADVOCATES LISTEN, UNDERSTAND, AND AMPLIFY THE VOICES OF THOSE THEY SERVE. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, LEAD WITH EMPATHY.
many families desperately needed our help but couldn’t afford it—so we often provided pro-bono support.”
In 2023, Gauthami took her mission even further by launching Color me SAFE Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that no family faces the system alone simply because they lack financial resources. “Our goal is to educate and empower our clients, providing guidance and solutions in child welfare issues.”
Gauthami’s passion for advocacy extends beyond child welfare. She is a fierce advocate for survivors of domestic vi olence, child abuse, and mental health awareness, particularly in immigrant and South Asian communities. “I wasn’t put in this world to stay silent. When I see injustice, I feel a deep responsibility to speak out and take action,” she affirms.
She recalls the words of Mahatma Gandhi: ‘Be the change you want to see. never be a bystander when I have the ability to make a difference. Change doesn’t happen in silence,” she states.
Given the emotionally demanding na ture of her work, Gauthami emphasizes the importance of self-care. “I strive to maintain balance by intentionally switching off from work once the day is done. That’s why I don’t call myself a CEO—I am the Chief Em pathy Officer,” she says. “Music remains a major source of healing for me. I teach classical piano as a side passion, and sharing the love of music with children brings me joy and relaxation.”
Her support system, including her husband and family, has been instrumental in keeping her grounded. “Even when I step away, my mind is always working, always seeking ways to make this world a better place. But my family, my team, and my faith keep me resilient.”
One of the biggest challenges Gauthami sees today is the lack of cultural sensitivity in child welfare. “Parenting styles, family dynamics, and even disciplinary methods can be misinterpreted, leading to unnecessary interventions that further traumatize families,” she explains. “Many immigrant families fear seeking help due to language barriers, cultural stigma, or mistrust in the system. Our role is to educate and empower families, so they understand their rights and navigate the system with confidence.”
Beyond policy work, Gauthami actively engages with communities by serving on panels, speaking at colleges, and
providing resources to help survivors reclaim their voices. Her speaking engagements often include her personal story, as well as speaking on topics like domestic violence, child abuse, and the work being done at Color Me SAFE. “True change happens when we educate and support communities, giving them the knowledge and strength to challenge stigma and stand up for themselves and others.”
For those looking to step into advocacy, Gauthami’s advice is simple: “If there is something you feel strongly about—something that moves you, keeps you up at night, or makes you want to create change—do it. Don’t wait for permission. The world will always have opinions, but you don’t need validation to do what’s right.”
She urges individuals to start small but stay consistent. “Advocacy isn’t about competition—it’s about collaboration. The most effective advocates listen, understand, and amplify the voices of those they serve. And most importantly, lead with empathy.”
Gauthami’s vision for Color me SAFE is ever evolving. “There are always new ideas brewing, always ways to create impact. I want to expand Color me SAFE Foundation, deepen its reach, and eventually introduce some of its work on a global level,” she shares. She also hopes to continue exploring her creative passions through writing, photography, and music.
Most importantly, Gauthami is embracing the present while looking toward a future grounded in love, purpose, and service.
“We don’t know how much time we have on this earth, but if I can make even a small difference in the lives of others, if I can leave the world a little better than I found it, that’s the legacy I hope to leave behind.”

At VBD Magazine, we are delighted to showcase individuals who are breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and forging new paths. That’s why we are excited to feature Dr. Henritta Stewart—a dynamic educator, mentor, researcher, and leader. A trailblazer, she has not only dared to dream big but has also turned those dreams into reality, empowering others to do the same.
From her early days in the classroom to becoming a distinguished voice in education, Dr. Stewart has remained unwavering in her pursuit of excellence. She refuses to settle for mediocrity, embracing growth, resilience, and lifelong learning. But beyond the accolades and achievements, she is a woman of wisdom—one who is passionate about sharing her knowledge with those seeking success in life, career, and faith.
Recently, we caught up with Dr. Stewart to discuss her beginnings, triumphs, and the lessons that have shaped her journey. As a woman of deep faith, she made one thing abundantly clear: “There were no shortcuts in my journey.” She credits God’s guidance for the manifestation of her dreams and remains dedicated to helping others rise, lead, and leave their mark on the world.
Dr. Stewart hails from the lush, mountainous region of North Clarendon, Jamaica, nestled under the picturesque Bull Head Mountain. Growing up in a close-knit community, she initially dreamed of becoming a medical doctor. However, her life took a different path when she fell in love with teaching while working as a mathematics instructor at just 17 years old.
Determined to master her craft, she pursued her Diploma in Teaching at Church Teachers’ College in Mandeville, Jamaica. She later went on to earn a Bachelor of Education from The University of the West Indies (UWI) in Kingston. Her passion for learning didn’t stop there—she relocated to the United States and pursued a Master’s Degree in Education at Florida
A&M University (FAMU). By 2003, she had achieved one of her greatest academic milestones: a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the same university.
During her five years at FAMU, Dr. Stewart not only excelled in her studies but also made a mark in academia through administration, research, and
international presentations. She published several scholarly papers and received numerous awards and scholarships. “It was a blessing to have had those opportunities,” she reflects.
In 2007, she decided to make the U.S. her permanent home, settling down with her family. Today, she is a proud wife,
mother of three grown children, and grandmother of five.
For Dr. Stewart, success is not just about personal achievements but about making a meaningful impact. “Success is accomplishing an aim or purpose, making a difference, and giving back to the world. But my journey was not without challenges.”
Like many high-achieving professionals, she had to juggle multiple responsibilities—pursuing her academic and career goals while managing family commitments and personal well-being. “Life will throw the unexpected at you, but you must remain resolute. The same God who kept you yesterday will keep you today. I trust Him completely until the issue is resolved.”
Dr. Stewart recalls moments of selfdoubt and exhaustion, but through prayer, determination, and discipline, she was able to overcome obstacles and emerge stronger. She acknowledges the importance of mental, emotional, and physical well-being, emphasizing that professionals must create worklife balance to sustain success without burnout.
As someone who has mastered the art of balancing work, faith, and family, Dr. Stewart shares practical strategies to help others do the same:
● Prioritize relationships. Nurture family bonds and make time for loved ones.
● Make family time enjoyable. Turn routine meetings into fun, engaging experiences.
● Maintain a positive attitude. Look for silver linings even in difficult situations.
● Play to your strengths. Focus on what you do best rather than trying to do everything.
● Set realistic goals. Use the S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) framework.
● Establish boundaries. Avoid over-
committing and learn to say “no” when necessary.
● Prioritize self-care. Include outdoor activities, exercise, and dedicated prayer time in your routine.
● Stay organized. Effective time management and planning are key to success.
But above all, Dr. Stewart emphasizes: “Pray for God’s guidance in all things.”
With decades of experience in leadership, Dr. Stewart knows that fostering trust and commitment is essential in any work environment. She believes that genuine leadership is about serving others and creating a culture of integrity and respect.
“A successful workplace is built on trust, transparency, and teamwork.”
Her advice for building trust in the workplace includes:
● Practice active listening. People need to feel heard and valued.
● Be genuine. Share your challenges and successes to create deeper connections.
● Find common ground. Talk about hobbies and interests beyond work.
● Recognize achievements. Celebrate milestones and acknowledge contributions.
● Ask meaningful questions. Show curiosity and invest in others’ success.
● Appreciate diversity. Recognize the unique value that every individual brings.
When she’s not traveling or spending time with family, Dr. Stewart remains deeply involved in education, community service, and mentorship. Her passions include:
LIFE WILL THROW THE UNEXPECTED AT YOU, BUT YOU MUST REMAIN RESOLUTE. THE SAME GOD WHO KEPT YOU YESTERDAY WILL KEEP YOU TODAY. I TRUST HIM COMPLETELY UNTIL THE ISSUE IS RESOLVED.
● Educational consulting – Supporting educators, school administrators, and policymakers.
● Mathematics research – Advancing innovative teaching methods and curriculum development.
● Event planning – Organizing impactful academic and faith-based gatherings.
● Writing – Contributing research papers, inspirational pieces, and educational resources.
● Youth empowerment – Working with young people to nurture their leadership potential.
Despite her many accomplishments, Dr. Stewart remains humble and grounded in faith. Looking ahead, she sees retirement as an opportunity to serve even more in God’s vineyard. “At the end of the day, only what we do for God will count,” she states. “True success is not measured in titles or accolades—it is found in helping others rise.”
Dr. Stewart continues to lead by example, inspiring future generations to walk boldly in their purpose and trust God’s plan. Her final words of advice? “Never stop learning, growing, or believing. Stay unshakeable in your faith, and success will follow.”
ME RA KOH’S PIONEERING APPROACH TO HEALING THROUGH IMAGERY
by Ann Marie Bryan
od still does the impossible. No matter how deep the pain goes, God restores joy even deeper.” Me Ra Koh
Me Ra Koh’s photography is more than capturing images—it’s about revealing the unbreakable spirit of those who have fought to reclaim their lives. From surviving trauma—living out of her car and seeking refuge in a psychiatric ward—to becoming a world-renowned photographer, bestselling author, and global inspiration, her journey is marked by faith and perseverance. Yet Me Ra’s story is not only about overcoming hardship; it’s about using her lens to help others rediscover their stories.
“I know what it’s like to feel invisible, unheard, like no one believes in you,” Me Ra shared in an exclusive interview with VBD Magazine. “But I also know what it’s like to fight for yourself, to reclaim your story, and to step into healing.”
Today, through the Rising Phoenix Experience at her FIORIA studio in Dallas, Me Ra and her team help women in their 40s-60s break free from shame and step into confidence. Using photography and neuroscience, she offers a transformative day of healing. Her work has been featured on Oprah, Live with Kelly & Ryan, Capture the Story with Me Ra Koh on Disney, and Adventure Family. Me Ra’s stunning portraits have been exhibited in London, New York, and Los Angeles galleries and museums, as well as published in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Martha Stewart, Parenting, Women’s World, and more.
Breaking barriers in the industry, Me Ra was invited by Sony in 2007 to become one of the first women photographers ever sponsored by a camera manufacturer. A sought-after keynote speaker and the author of six books, she continues to inspire both creatively and spiritually. Alongside her husband, Brian Tausend, Me Ra has spent over 15 years empowering thousands of women through their CONFIDENCE photography and travel workshops in destinations like Italy, Greece, and Thailand.
Me Ra’s story begins in Eugene, Oregon, where she spent the early years of her childhood before her family relocated to Washington. Her name, Korean in origin, holds a powerful meaning—“a metaphor for silk, the softest yet strongest fabric.”
Growing up, she faced immense challenges, particularly in her relationship with her father, who carried the scars of the Korean War. “He was very old generation, and there was just a lot of trauma and pain in his own life that he never really healed from,” she shared. “That pain shaped our relationship, and I went through years of abuse that were very hard.”
When Me Ra left home for college, it was the first time she experienced freedom—but it was also when she encountered another devastating chapter in her life. What began as a charming and warm connection soon spiraled into a cycle of control, manipulation, and ultimately, a devastating assault.
“He seemed like a leader, someone everybody trusted. So when he asked me out, I thought, ‘Wow, this is exciting.’ But over time, he became more aggressive, more controlling. And when I was at my lowest, when my self-worth was at its weakest, he took advantage of that.”
That night, on Valentine’s Day, he took her to an abandoned parking lot and raped her. The weight of the violation and confusion was crushing, leaving her in a state of shock and disbelief. “I remember getting in the shower with all my clothes on and just crying. I felt like I was going crazy.”
For months, Me Ra suffered in silence, believing the lie that it was her fault. Trapped in the weight of shame and isolation, she longed for support, hoping
IT STARTED AS A PERSONAL PASSION. THEN MOMS ASKED ME TO PHOTOGRAPH THEIR KIDS. SOON, SOMEONE BOOKED ME FOR A WEDDING. BEFORE I KNEW IT, WE WERE CHARGING OVER $20,000 PER WEDDING.
that someone, especially her own family, would stand by her.
“When I reported it, I thought my dad would finally be there for me. But instead, he said I had brought ultimate shame to our family.”
With nowhere to turn, Me Ra ended up living out of her car in Seattle parking lots and surfing friends’ couches. She reported the rape but was denied a restraining order. It was during this rock-bottom season that she found herself at a college chapel service where the speaker looked into the audience and said, “There’s someone here who is about to give up on life. I don’t know where you are sitting, but I see your future, and it’s bigger than you can imagine. But you need to get help for yourself, to fight for your healing.”
That moment became a turning point. The speaker’s words ignited the courage to get professional help. Determined to reclaim her life, Me Ra checked herself into a locked psychiatric ward, and embarked on the long, painful journey of healing.
A decade later, Me Ra had found stability, love, and a renewed faith. But grief knocked on her door once again when she lost her second child, Aidan. “I woke up from the surgery with a C-section scar and no baby. And I fell into a deep, deep grief.”
During her period of grief, a moment of inspiration struck as she observed her daughter, Pascaline, playing in the light near the French doors. “I remember looking at her and thinking, ‘I want to capture this moment. I want to learn how to take a photo of this.’”
Despite struggling with learning disabilities that made technical skills feel intimidating, Me Ra bought a camera, several rolls of film, and started teaching herself photography.
EMPOWERING THROUGH THE LENS
“It started as a personal passion. Then moms asked me to photograph their kids. Soon, someone booked me for a wedding. Before I knew it, we were charging over $20,000 per wedding.”
Recognizing the transformative power of photography, Me Ra dedicated herself to empowering women, especially mothers, to harness this art form. She hosted a show on Disney Junior, inspiring moms and children to capture the things they love most. Me Ra and her husband developed workshops tailored to demystify camera technology, foster confidence and encourage creativity among participants. Her approach emphasizes that true beauty lies in authenticity, encouraging women to embrace their stories, complete with imperfections and triumphs.
Me Ra’s philosophy, encapsulated in the mantra “Shoot like a Woman,” advocates for photographers to infuse their work with empathy, research and active listening. By doing so, they can capture genuine emotions and narratives, transforming photography into a tool for healing and connection.
Me Ra wasn’t just interested in taking beautiful pictures—she wanted to help people see their own beauty and strength. Each woman has a different story of rising from the ashes—whether it’s overcoming cancer, healing from sexual abuse or domestic violence, breaking free from shame, rediscovering the warrior within, or simply stepping out of hiding into all God has for them.
Through the Rising Phoenix Experience, Me Ra and her team combine photography and neuroscience to help rewire the brain for healing and confidence. Before each session, they listen to clients’ narratives through guided questions, highlighting moments of triumph over adversity to create meaningful, transformative art.
“For the Rising Phoenix Experience, we interview their closest family and friends beforehand and weave their words throughout the day using our FIORIA Method—reinforcing their strength and rewiring the brain for confidence.”
Further, Me Ra and her team provide a white-glove wall art installation service, ensuring that each client’s custom portrait
is displayed with care and precision in their home. By displaying the final portrait in their homes, clients experience a subconscious rewiring of their brains, reinforcing their new identity and overcoming past wounds. “When you see yourself in that light every single day, it changes everything.”
Storytelling has always been Me Ra’s passion. The devastating assault she had endured during college led her to a period of deep introspection and healing, during which she authored Beauty Restored: Finding Life and Hope After Date Rape. Through this book, she sought to offer solace and understanding to others who have faced similar pain. Writing became a therapeutic journey, allowing her to process her experiences and extend a lifeline to those in need.
Following Beauty Restored, Me Ra has authored several bestselling books, including Your Baby in Pictures, Your Child in
Pictures, and Your Family in Pictures accessible guides that empower parents to document their family live with beauty and meaning. She also penned Work Happily Ever After, inspiring professionals to cultivate joy in their careers, and 4 Minutes to Hear God’s Voice, a powerful guide to tuning into divine wisdom amid the hustle and bustle of life.
Through her writing, Me Ra continues to uplift and equip others, proving that storytelling—whether through words or photography—has the power to heal, inspire, and transform.

Some people walk in their calling, while others blaze a path so bright that it illuminates the way for others. Dr. Angela Butts Chester is one of those trailblazers. A woman of wisdom, faith, and purpose, she has dedicated her life to uplifting others. Wearing many hats—Pastoral Counselor, Empowerment Coach, Mediapreneur, Bestselling Author, and Speaker—she continues to inspire, challenge, and equip individuals to step into their divine potential.
From a young age, Dr. Angela knew she was called to serve, but it wasn’t until a pivotal conversation with her pastor, Dr. Brian Blount—now President Emeritus of Union Presbyterian Seminary—that her purpose was fully clarified. “He suggested I follow the path of Pastoral Counseling. He explained I would be able to help people, deliver the Word, and still have a connection to the community,” she recalls. That conversation was the catalyst that set her on a journey to become one of the most influential voices in faith-based empowerment today.
Growing up in Virginia, Dr. Angela was raised in a home where faith, education, and service were deeply ingrained values. Her family, especially her father and grandparents, encouraged her to think beyond limitations and embrace purpose. Those early lessons laid the foundation for a life dedicated to helping others discover their divine calling.
“My calling has always been to uplift, encourage, and equip others to step fully into their divine potential,” Dr. Angela says. “Faith provides the foundation, and empowerment is the action step. I help individuals align with God’s purpose while equipping them with practical tools to thrive.”
Her academic journey in Pastoral Counseling, with a focus on Christian Leadership and Women’s Ministry, equipped her with the knowledge and expertise to merge faith with personal development. Through years of study, she deepened her understanding
of how spirituality and psychology intersect—a powerful combination that would later define her career.
Dr. Angela is known for seamlessly blending spiritual wisdom with practical strategies to help women reclaim their confidence, step into leadership, and redefine success. She understands the struggles many women face, from self-doubt to imposter syndrome and the pressure to balance multiple roles.
“Many women believe they are ‘too late’ to step into their calling,” she explains. “I help women shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset. Every season of life has value and purpose.”
Her coaching methods include faith-based exercises, mindset shifts, and tangible action steps. “Faith without works is incomplete,” she says. “I encourage prayer and reflection but also provide actionable strategies for career development, mindset shifts, and personal growth.”
For Dr. Angela, empowerment is more than a concept, it’s daily practice. “Every day, do something that is reflective of your faith,” she advises. “Wear the color of the day to inspire faith-filled action. Take a walking meditation. Do something intentional.”
In addition to her work in media, Dr. Angela is also the Editor-in-Chief of PASSIONEER Magazine, a publication dedicated to celebrating women in leadership. Inspired by the influential women in her own life—such as Dr. Katherine Johnson, Dr. Christine Darden, and Mayor Jessie Rattley—she created a platform to amplify the voices of women leading with passion, purpose, and faith.
“Women are multifaceted,” she explains. “As we mature in time, talent, and treasure, we become the multidimensional people we knew ourselves to be. PASSIONEER Magazine was birthed from a desire to amplify the voices of women who are leading with passion, purpose, and faith. Far too often Women are passed over, or not acknowledged for their work and I want
to help remedy that. Habakkuk 2:2 is the inspiration for the magazine; it’s even on the website! I hope it serves as both inspiration and a resource, empowering women to lead boldly in their respective fields.”
As the host of Daily Spark with Dr. Angela and the award-winning Daily Spark TV, Dr. Angela has created platforms that extend far beyond the traditional pulpit. What started as a prayerful request to be on the radio evolved into a global movement of faith and inspiration.
“I love books and sharing my faith,” she says. “So, I prayed a simple prayer—‘Lord, I’d like to be on the radio.’ I wanted to create a space where faith and inspiration could reach people where they are.”
With her tagline “Enlighten, Inspire, and Empower,” Dr. Angela continues to bring uplifting content to listeners and viewers worldwide.
Among her many published works, Living in Divine Incandescence and The Power of She: Encouraging Women to Embrace Their Strengths stand out for their messages of faith, empowerment, and self-discovery.
“Living in Divine Incandescence reminds us that God is always with us. It teaches us how to better understand, appreciate, and utilize this breath we’ve been given,” she explains.
The Power of She focuses on career, social impact, and community engagement, inspiring women to step boldly into leadership. “I want readers to walk away knowing they are enough, they are capable, and their journey has significance.”
As a breast cancer survivor, Dr. Angela has faced adversity head-on, emerging stronger, more focused, and more intentional about her purpose.
“Facing cancer deepened my understanding of faith and resilience,” she shares. “It reinforced that life is precious and should be purposeful. What are you doing with your dash? How will you make a positive impact between the sunrise and sunset of your life?”
Her life verse, Jeremiah 29:11, has been a guiding force throughout her journey. “Every day is an opportunity to live intentionally, love fiercely, and serve wholeheartedly.”
Beyond her individual achievements, Dr. Angela is deeply committed to mentorship and community engagement. She is a member of prestigious organizations like the International Society for Mental Health, the Global Society of Empowered Women, and the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.
“Being surrounded by like-minded leaders strengthens my mission and broadens the impact of my work globally,” she says. Continuing the legacy of her grandfather, William Davis Butts—a civil rights attorney mentioned in Hidden Figures—she remains steadfast in helping others thrive.
As she looks ahead, Dr. Angela plans to expand her coaching programs, elevate her media platforms, and launch new projects that continue to empower women globally.
“Every day, I pray that others are placed on my path, but also that I am placed on the path of others,” she says. “When we wake up and walk in our calling, we help others get where they are going as well.”
With an unstoppable faith and an unwavering commitment to purpose, Dr. Angela Butts Chester is not just changing lives, she’s changing the world.
DR. TAVIS TAYLOR ON PURPOSE, FAITH & ENTREPRENEURSHIP
by Ann Marie Bryan
When life presents obstacles, some falter— but Dr. Tavis Taylor rises, transforming every challenge into a steppingstone for greater purpose. Her journey is living proof that setbacks are not the end but a setup for something greater when you trust God’s plan.
Today, Dr. Tavis is a Business Strategist Coach, Resilience Mindset Coach, Author, and widely known as The Ultimate Purpose Pusher. With unwavering faith, bold transparency, and an unapologetic drive, she empowers individuals to step boldly into their God-given calling. Her story is about bouncing back and pushing forward with faith, wisdom, and strategy.
In the first part of this exclusive VBD Magazine feature, published in our February issue, we explored Dr. Tavis’s impact, influence, and insights on business and purpose-driven success. But her story runs far deeper. In this concluding installment, she opens up about the raw and unfiltered moments that defined her path—the struggles, the turning points, and the faith-fueled transformation that shaped her into The Ultimate Purpose Pusher.
Dr. Tavis grew up in Monroe, Georgia, in what seemed to be a picture-perfect family—two parents, siblings, and a small-town upbringing. “From the outside looking in, my family looked ideal,” she shares. “My parents were in love—truly in love. People used to joke about it.” But beneath the surface, life was far from simple.
Monroe, like many Southern towns, still had racial and economic divides that shaped her early experiences. “It wasn’t officially segregated, but there was still division—racially and economically. My siblings and I were fortunate to be raised in a two-parent home, but that didn’t shield us from challenges,” she recalls.
Her academic journey began at Monroe Primary School. It later led her to Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Science and a
Master of Public Administration. She further expanded her expertise earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Positive Neuropsychology from The Graduate University of America—The New School of Positive Psychology in California. Yet, no degree or classroom could have fully prepared her for the trials that life had ahead.
Dr. Tavis candidly shares her brushes with the law, struggles with financial missteps, and personal battles that tested her faith. At one point, she found herself sitting in a jail cell, confronted with the weight of her past decisions.
“The cream-colored, dilapidated walls of the jail cell were caving in like quick-
sand,” she reads from her book, The Scenic Route to Purpose: A Story of Tests, Trials, and Triumph. “The stench of the jail triggered a part of my life that I was all too familiar with.”
Her crime? Signing off on fraudulent payroll entries at a major university. What started as a small misstep—allowing unauthorized postage usage—quickly escalated. “At first, I didn’t know. Then I did, and I kept doing it. The enemy never shows you his hand, but he will make you think your mistakes won’t come back to haunt you.”
Serving time away from her then five-yearold son, she faced a level of brokenness that only God could mend. “I sat in that
cell, wondering, God, where are you?” But instead of giving up, she surrendered. “I muttered a desperate prayer—Lord, if you get me out of this, I will tell my story. I will minister in prisons. I will walk in my calling.”
Dr. Tavis served her time and was eventually released. But last year, she found herself back in the same jail. This time, she turned to the one thing that had become second nature—prayer. And once again, God intervened. A friend’s sister, working within the Fulton County Jail system, intercepted her paperwork. Within minutes, she was set free.
“When those doors opened, I ran,” she says, laughing. “I ran straight into purpose.”
Dr. Tavis does not sugarcoat her past, nor does she allow it to define her. Instead, she uses it as a lesson in resilience. “One of the key things I ask when I teach is this: Have you counted the cost?” she says.
“People want to quit jobs, leave marriages, start businesses, walk away from churches—without counting the cost. I ask them, have you considered what’s on the other side of your decision? Because every choice comes with a consequence.”
Her coaching and ministry are rooted in this principle. She empowers people to take ownership of their actions, learn from their mistakes, and move forward with wisdom. “Too often, we only see what we want in the moment, never thinking about the end result. But resilience is about making intentional, wise choices.”
Dr. Tavis is a sought-after business strategist, mentor, and speaker, leading countless individuals to success. She helps entrepreneurs, educators, ministry leaders, and professionals monetize their skills, build sustainable businesses, and unlock their full potential.
Her coaching school, Tailored Connection Staffing & Training Company, is a hub for business owners and professionals
seeking transformation. She also runs Behind the Walls, a prison ministry that brings hope to incarcerated individuals. “I promised God I would go back and serve those behind bars,” she says. “And I have.”
Her 90-day accountability program, She Leads, has empowered women from all walks of life. “These women are government officials, HR executives, doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs. But they all need one thing—clarity. I teach them how to take what they’ve been doing for companies for minimal dollars and do it for themselves for maximum dollars.”
Dr. Tavis merges ministry and marketplace, demonstrating that profitability and purpose can coexist. “People struggle with charging for their gifts,” she says.
“But here’s the truth: The wealth of the wicked is stored up for the righteous (Proverbs 13:22). Why shouldn’t believers be wealthy? Why shouldn’t we build businesses that fund the kingdom?”
Her business model leverages digital products, coaching programs, and online courses. “Everything is digital,” she says. “If you buy car insurance, they ask if you want an e-receipt. That’s where the world is going, and if you’re not in that space, you’re behind.”
She also teaches faceless Instagram branding, a method of earning income without personal exposure. “There’s so much money in it,” she says. “If the worldly system can use these tools to build wealth, why can’t believers? This is the wealth transfer that the Bible talks about.”
For those struggling with shame and guilt, Dr. Tavis offers a powerful reminder: God is a Redeemer. “We tell ourselves stories—stories that keep us bound,” she explains. “But we have to replace those stories with God’s truth. You cannot heal from a lie you refuse to confront.”
Her upcoming guided journal, Hush and Heal, is designed to guide people through self-reflection and deliverance from limiting beliefs. “Sometimes, you just need to hush and heal. Face your truth, let go of shame, and walk in freedom.”
With an expanding platform that includes business coaching, prison ministry, personal development programs, and digital marketing training, Dr. Tavis shows no signs of slowing down. She is also launching Emerge U, an online school dedicated to teaching foundational biblical principles in a simple, digestible way.
And yes—more books are coming. “I have about 20 books, but I’m always writing. My next series will focus on Holy Communion, the Holy Spirit, identity in Christ, and other foundational topics. The basics matter.”
Her message is undeniable: You can fail, fall, and still rise. You can be broken and still be chosen. You can be a prisoner and still be called. Because in God’s plan, nothing is wasted.
