¿Por qué un reloj de submarinismo está inspirado en el desierto?

El tono del reloj evoca al desierto, y más precisamente el Valle de la Muerte, en los Estados Unidos, donde Ernest H. Brooks II, pionero de la fotografí a submarina y colaborador del proyecto Editi on Fift y Fathoms, vivió una experiencia de buceo espectacular en 1962. “Es increíble cómo brilla el sol a las 7 de la mañana en el Valle de la Muerte. Mientras nos preparábamos para zambullirnos, ya podíamos senti r la arena caliente bajo los pies”, cuenta Ernest H. Brooks II, famoso por sus fotografí as en blanco y negro. El lugar al que se refi ere es Devils Hole, o el Hoyo del Diablo, un abismo subacuáti co que penetra en las entrañas de la ti erra a más de 120 metros de profundidad, antes de desembocar en un gigantesco río submarino. El Hoyo del Diablo también ti ene la parti cularidad de ser el refugio exclusivo de una especie de peces muy amenazada, el Cyprinodon diabolis, que fue fotografi ado por primera vez por el propio fotógrafo. Brooks tomó las primeras fotografí as de un sistema de cuevas en medio del desierto, unas imágenes que han viajado por todo el mundo.

El nuevo Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date con los colores del desierto, está destinado a los aventureros, los apasionados y los espíritus creativos. Este espíritu es el que condujo a Blancpain, en los años 1970, a romper con los códigos estéticos tradicionales de los modelos Bathyscaphe realizando una serie de piezas caracterizadas por una caja en forma de cojín, un aro giratorio interior, en lugar del bisel giratorio exterior convencional, una esfera gris en degradé, así como la indicación del día de la semana y de la fecha. La esfera del Bathyscaphe Day Date Desert Edition, adopta este estilo, que por primera vez asocia un beige arena en degradé, un tono inédito en la colección. Sus matices y su acabado soleado le brindan una claridad extraordinaria, mientras que sus índices rectangulares, de grandes proporciones, garantizan una lectura instantánea de las informaciones. Una minutería dotada de números arábigos marca los intervalos de cinco minutos, evocando el aro giratorio interior del reloj de 1970. Al igual que en la pieza original, las ventanillas del calendario y del día de la semana están situadas a las 3 horas. Las agujas, recubiertas de SuperLumiNova®, retoman la forma de bastón de los antiguos modelos Bathyscaphe. La esfera está realzada por un bisel giratorio unidireccional con un inserto de cerámica marrón e índices de Liquidmetal. De movimiento automático, y una reserva de marcha de 5 días, particularmente apreciable durante la vida diaria. El fondo de cristal zafi ro del reloj permite admirar los acabados de este movimiento de alta gama. Editado en 500 ejemplares, el modelo Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date Desert Edition posee una correa de tela de vela color arena que combina con los tonos cálidos de la esfera.

THIS PIECE INSPIRED BY A BLANCPAIN DIVING WATCH FROM THE 1970S IS DISTINGUISHED BY ITS GRADIENT SANDY-BEIGE DIAL WITH A SUNBURST FINISH

Why is a diving watch inspired by the desert? The shades of the watch recall the desert, and more precisely Death Valley, in the United States, where Ernest H. Brooks II, a pioneer of underwater photography and collaborator on the Editi on Fift y Fathoms project, undertook a spectacular dive in 1962. “It is unbelievable how hot the sun blazes at seven o’clock in the morning in infamous Death Valley. We could already feel the hot sand under our feet as we set off …”, said Ernest H. Brooks II, famous for his black and white photos. The place he is referring to is Devils Hole, an underwater chasm that penetrates the bowels of the earth at a depth of more than 120 metres before fl owing into a giganti c underwater river. Devils Hole also has the unique feature of being the exclusive home of a highly endangered species of fi sh, Cyprinodon diabolis, which was photographed for the fi rst ti me by Brooks. The photographer also took the fi rst pictures of a cave system in the middle of the desert, images that have been seen all over the world. Th e new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date with the colours of the desert is designed for adventurers, enthusiasts and creative spirits. Th is spirit is what led Blancpain in the 1970s to break with the traditional design codes of its Bathyscaphe models by making a series of pieces characterised by their cushion-shaped case, an inner rotating ring instead of the conventional outer rotating bezel, a grey gradient dial and a week and date indication. Th e dial of the Bathyscaphe Day Date Desert Edition mimics this style and for the fi rst time comes in a gradient sandy-beige dial, a shade that is being used for the fi rst time in the collection. Its nuances and sunburst fi nish give it exceptional clarity, while its large rectangular hour marks ensure that information can be read at a glance. A chapter ring with Arabic numerals at 5-minute intervals evokes the inner rotating ring on the 1970s watch. As on the original piece, the day and date windows are located at 3 o’clock. Th e hands, which are coated in Super-LumiNova, once again feature the baton shape of vintage Bathyscaphe models. Th e dial is topped by a unidirectional rotating bezel with a brown ceramic insert and Liquidmetal markers. It has an automatic movement that builds up a 5-day power reserve, perfect for everyday life. Th e timepiece’s sapphire crystal case back makes it possible to admire the fi nishes on this high-end movement. Th e Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date Desert Edition comes in a limited edition of 500 units and is set on a sandy-coloured sail canvas strap to match the dial.
