GRADUATE SYLLABUS Level: Master 1; Semester: 8th; Module: Computing & Translation (UY: 2016-2017) Instructor: Mr. Abdelkader NADIR
1. Course Objectives: The course of Computing & Translation aims at:
Introducing students to the field of translation technology in general and computer-aided translation in particular. Introducing students to translation processes and workflows. Helping students acquire new translation-related technology skills. Enabling student to develop personal projects related to translation technology.
2. Course Skills & Sub-skills: Students are supposed to master at least Computer’s Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Package, Internet and e-mail. Attend classes, focus and take notes. 1. Taking part in classroom discussion and showing good grasp of the different approaches, theories and models of natural language processing, machine translation, CAT and terminology management. 2. Synthesising and thinking critically about the different approaches, theories and models of machine translation and terminology management. 3. Speaking publicly by presenting using ICT. 4. Demonstrating ability to work individually and in a team. 5. 6. 7. 8.
For the personal project, students will have to: Use technological devices and software applications; Edit and proofread machine translation; Use CAT, Terminology and Localization tools; Attain a sound understanding of key concepts and functions in CAT tools. 1
