Voorwoord Beste lezer, Met een dubbel gevoel presenteer ik aan u deze najaarseditie van éKompas, één van de laatste werkzaamheden voor het bestuursjaar 2015/2016.

Als aftredende voorzitter kijk ik terug naar een geweldig bestuursjaar, een waar ik mij zowel op persoonlijke vlakken als in teamverband heb kunnen ontwikkelen, en ik ben blij om onderdeel te zijn geweest van de ABC Compas vereniging.

In december 2016 viert ABC Compas haar vijfjarige bestaan en in deze opgave willen wij daar even stil bij staan. In 2011 hebben Robert Rosa, Marvin Weverink, Nathan Correa en Sharif Abdoelrahman de vereniging opgestart met als doel om een netwerk te creëren voor technische studenten uit ABC-eilanden. Het initiatief werd enthousiast opgepakt door de volgende besturen en is ABC Compas binnen deze vijf jaren gegroeid in aantal leden, soorten activiteiten en naamsbekendheid.

Vooral de Opvangdag voor nieuwe studenten en de gezellige Anochi Krioyo avond zijn een succes!

vertellen over afstuderen, ervaringen in het buitenland en nog meer! Wij mogen trots zijn op onze leden en wij hopen dat hun verhaal ook anderen zal inspireren. Daarnaast hebben wij ook ruimte gegeven aan verhalen over inspirerende projecten op de ABC-eilanden.

Wij geloven dat ABC Compas als vereniging zal blijven groeien en dat deze een kern vormt voor allen afkomstig uit de ABC-eilanden die een technische studie doen of geïnteresseerd zijn in technische ontwikkelingen.

Deze magazine was niet mogelijk geweest zonder de inzet van de magazine commissie. Een speciale dank gaat uit naar Nadège, Rashid, Cici, Cindy en Natalien. Daarnaast willen wij ook onze sponsor Lighthouse Club Aruba bedanken voor de ondersteuning.

Magazine COmmissie De magazine commissie is verantwoordelijk voor de technische- en ontwerpafdeling van éKompas magazine. Deze commissie heeft zich dit jaar het meest beziggehouden met het ontwerpen van de nieuwe huisstijl van de éKompas magazine. De magazine commissie kan opgesplitst worden in de journalistieke afdeling en de ontwerpafdeling. Deze magazine is het resultaat van het harde werken van de volgende commissieleden: Rashid Ayoubi en Nadège Heyligar, die zich vooral hebben beziggehouden met het ontwerp. Jeandrelyse Isenia die vele artikelen heeft verzameld en geschreven. Voor de rest werd de commissie ook ondersteund door Corina Regales en Cindy Jantji.

Samen hebben zij gezorgd dat deze editie van de magazine een goede inhoud en een mooie stijl heeft!

Activiteiten COmmissie Heb jij je ooit afgevraagd wie de borrels van het ABC Compas organiseert? De excursie naar de Maeslantkering dan? En wat dacht je van de Movie night?

ABC Compas staat bekend onder andere voor haar gezellige activiteiten zoals de Nochi krioyo, Rooftop bbq, de Opvangdag voor de eerstejaars studenten en nog veel meer. Om deze activiteiten te organiseren heeft ABC Compas een commissie ingesteld om door het jaar heen leuke sociale activiteiten te organiseren.

De activiteitencommissie organiseert sociale activiteiten voor de leden, maar ook voor nietleden afkomstig van de ABC-eilanden, met als doel om de studenten bij elkaar te brengen met andere studenten van de ABC-eilanden.

Grappig genoeg bestaat de activiteitencommissie van 2015/2016 uit een hele creatieve groep studenten. Twee van de leden studeren Industrieel Ontwerpen en de andere twee leden studeren Bouwkunde.

Als eerste hebben we Nadège Heyligar die Industrieel Ontwerp studeert aan de TU Delft, zij leidt als bestuurslid de commissie. Nadege is nu bezig met de laatste loodjes van haar studie.

Nadege is het best te herkennen aan de paars/ blauwe stroken in haar haar. Daarnaast hebben we Cindy Jantji. Cindy studeert ook Industrieel Ontwerpen en is bezig met haar minor. Cindy is kalm, grappig, behulpzaam, en je kunt altijd op haar rekenen. Verder hebben we Quincy van Arneman Zimmerman. Hij studeert bouwkunde aan de hogeschool van Rotterdam en is nu bezig met zijn derde jaar. Quincy is de kok in de commissie en altijd daar om zware dingen te helpen dragen. De laatste en ook de jongste in de commissie is Lizanne Espinal. Zij is een tweedejaars bouwkunde student. Nadege, Cindy, Quincy en Lizanne zijn allen afkomstig uit dushi Curaçao.

Samen hebben ze heel veel leuke activiteiten georganiseerd voor de studenten en er volgt zeker veel meer!

Achter het grootste evenement van ABC Compas staat de grootste commissie van ABC Compas!

De jaarlijkse opvang vindt plaats in de eerste week van augustus. Het doel is om de nieuwe technische studenten te verwelkomen in Delft en om ze kennis te laten maken met elkaar en met de stad. Dit jaar verwachtten we ruim 30 studenten uit Aruba en Curaçao. Om hun een leuke dag te bezorgen werd in de zomer de opvang commissie voor dit jaar bij elkaar geroepen. Deze commissie kan worden gezien als een uitbreiding van de activiteiten commissie.

De commissie werd geleid door Nadege Heyligar, die tevens in het bestuur de commissaris is van de sociale evenementen. Vanuit het bestuur was ook Corina Regales, de voorzitter van ABC Compas actief als trekker van de groep.

De commissie bestond dit jaar verder uit: Laura Kamphuis, oud bestuurslid met veel ervaring Cindy Jantji, de actieve all-arounder Quincy van Arneman Zimmerman, die verantwoordelijk was voor het eten Rashid Ayoubi, die met zijn grafische skills de speurtocht mogelijk heeft gemaakt Ruben Cardose, die zijn budgeterings skills goed van pas liet komen Giandra Rasmijn, sharp and to the point!

Samen hebben zij ervoor gezorgd dat de opvang een onvergetelijke dag was voor de nieuwe eerstejaarsstudenten!

Finance COmmissie De finance commissie bestaat uit Marie-Louise Greijmans, oud bestuursleden Yannick Chance, George Thiel en Jerico Bakhuis als hoofd van de commissie. Dit jaar heeft de finance commissie zich bezig gehouden met het reorganiseren en herstructureren van alles wat te maken heeft met sponsorwerving.

De sponsorpakketten zijn geherformuleerd en in een overzichtelijke sponsorflyer geplaatst.

Deze sponsorflyers zijn een grote hulp geweest bij de bekendmaking van ABC Compas bij Fred Expo, waar de finance commissie, samen met bestuursleden, aanwezig was.

Dit alles, opdat het bestuursjaar 2016/2017 gelijk kan starten aan wat echt belangrijk is voor de groei van ABC Compas: sponsors benaderen zodat er geld binnengehaald kan worden voor het organiseren van educatieve en sociale activiteiten. Het doel van deze activiteiten is om onze leden in contact te brengen met elkaar en ze in staat te stellen om te netwerken. Zodoende wordt er geld binnengehaald om informatieve excursies te organiseren, waarop de focus van ABC Compas ook meer gespitst zal zijn het komende bestuursjaar.

Monumentenzorg

Aruba Het monumentenbeleid heeft als doel te komen tot een beheersing van het proces tot behoud van monumenten op Aruba.

Daarbij staat bescherming en behoud van monumenten centraal.

Monumenten worden gedefinieerd als roerende en onroerende zaken, welke tenminste vijftig jaar geleden vervaardigd zijn en die van algemeen belang worden geacht vanwege hun schoonheid, kunstwaarde, hun betekenis voor de wetenschap, de geschiedenis van het eiland of hun volkskundige waarde.

Het monumentenbeleid mag niet alleen gericht zijn op conservering, waarbij alles wat afwijkt van het oorspronkelijke niet wordt toegelaten.

Hieruit volgt dan een tweede doelstelling. De monumenten met hun directe omgeving op een zoveel mogelijk cultureel- historisch verantwoorde wijze tot nieuw leven brengen, zodat het weer een omgeving wordt waar gewoond, gewinkeld en gewerkt kan worden en waar de toerist een aangenaam verblijfsklimaat ondervindt.

De Monumentenzorg op Aruba bestaat uit drie organisaties die actief zijn en ressorteren onder de Minister van Cultuur en zijn: • De Monumentenraad, een adviesorgaan aan de Minister van Cultuur; • De Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba, een

•

zelfstandig rechtspersoon en belast met het financiele gedeelte; Monumentenbureau, de ambtelijke dienst belast met het beleid, naleving van de wet, voorbereiden en leiden van restauraties en het is kenniscentrum.

Inhoud van het monumentenbeleid De rol die de overheid vervult bij het monumentenbeleid is met name voorwaardenscheppend van aard. De overheid zal stimulerend, normstellend en controlerend actief zijn. Bij gebouwde monumenten ligt de nadruk meer op actief ingrijpen, herstel. Bij niet gebouwde monumenten meer op conservering en preserveren. Archeologische en historische vindplaatsen zullen eveneens beschermd worden. Het Monumentenbureau heeft geen

bemoeienis met natuurlijke monumenten.

Om bovengenoemde doelstellingen te bereiken is het overheidsbeleid op het gebied van monumenten in eerste instantie gebaseerd op de volgende uitgangspunten: • het naleven van het juridisch instrumentarium.

• uitbreiden en versterken van het monumentenbureau middels invulling met meer personeel van de organisatiestructuur, alsook vergroting van de middelen (regeerprogramma 20132017).

• het ontwikkelen van een financieel instrumentarium.

• het toegankelijker maken van het monumentenbeleid • het vergroten van de bewustwording

Juridisch instrumentarium Ter bescherming van de monumenten is de monumentenverordening gemaakt welke in de afzonderlijke afdeling van het Afkondigingsblad van Aruba 1991 no GT 46 is opgenomen.

Volgens de verordening moet elk monument dat beschermd wordt eerst aangewezen worden, waarna dit vervolgens ingeschreven moet worden in het Monumentenregister. Het Monumentenbureau draagt de monumenten voor ter bescherming aan de Minister van Cultuur.

Momenteel heeft het Monumentenbureau de Minister van Cultuur voorgedragen: • dat monumenteigenaren belastingaftrek kunnen gaan krijgen voor hun onderhoud aan monumenten; • dat bij aankoop van een monument er geen overdrachtsbelasting wordt betaald.

Dit voorstel is reeds goedgekeurd in de Ministerraad en wordt nu voorbereid om wettelijk vastgelegd te worden.

Het vergunningstelsel is reeds in werking getreden. Voor elke wijziging dient een vergunning verzocht te worden. Hiervoor doet men een kleine betaling van Afl. 200,=.

De voorwaarden voor afgeven van de vergunningen zijn vastgelegd en worden bij de aanwijzing tot bescherming meegestuurd. De procedure tot ontvankelijk verklaring alsmede het proces is omschreven in het legesbesluit Monumentenbureau. De normen om te toetsen liggen vast in de wetgeving. Inmiddels zijn meerdere monumentenvergunningen afgegeven.

Momenteel is een concept opgesteld om de boetes van overtredingen op de monumentenwet te verhogen.

Technisch beleid Als leidraad voor restauraties aan de Arubaanse monumenten volgt Aruba eveneens de regels, zoals vastgelegd in het verdrag van VenetiĂŤ van ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments).

Dit verdrag bestaat uit 22 artikelen. O.a. wordt hierin gesteld dat uitbreidingen (alleen indien noodzakelijk) aan monumenten in hedendaagse architectuur moeten wordt uitgevoerd. Als uitgangspunt van beleid worden alle sierlijsten geverfd in witte verf en houtwerk binnen en buiten dienen geverfd te worden, beitsen is dus niet toegestaan. Qua kleurstelling worden de gevels van het pand teruggebracht naar zijn originele kleur. Het exterieur van het pand mag niet gewijzigd worden. Indien wijzigingen hebben plaatsgevonden worden elementen alleen teruggebracht zoals vastgelegd op oude foto’s. (b.v. dakpannen terug brengen, louvre-

ramen terug plaatsen, etc.) Daken mogen niet verhoogd worden, raamopeningen mogen niet gewijzigd worden. Originele raam en deurinvullingen, alsook dakbedekkingen, moeten teruggebracht (hersteld) worden. , Het uitgebreider restauratiebeleid is nu een hoofdstuk in het Monumentenhandboek Aruba, dat recent is opgesteld. In het Handboek zijn alle wetten opgenomen, de selectiecriteria voor de aanwijzing tot beschermd monument op Aruba en categorisering in A- en B- monumenten, de lijst van de reeds beschermde monumenten, het monumentenvergunning stelsel. Zodra deze juridisch is vastgelegd kan eenieder dit handboek gebruiken en deze vergunning biedt alle regels bij elkaar.

Graduation Spotlight Daniël Harmsen has recently graduated and is also an ABC Compas member. He has a BSc degree in Electrical Engineering and a MSc degree in Electrical Power Engineering. Daniël gives a short explanation of his master thesis.

During my thesis I got the opportunity to design and build a Partial Discharge Test Platform, which is a workbench for education, training and research purposes and can be used to study pattern recognition under AC conditions.

Partial discharge is an electrical discharge (a phenomena that causes the release of stored energy) that occurs without completely bridging the gap or insulation between two conducting materials/electrodes.

A Partial Discharge (here after ‘PD’) activity can occur at any point in the insulation system, where the electric field strength exceeds the breakdown strength of that portion of the insulating material. These high electric field strength places occur at imperfections or defects of the HV apparatus.

There are many types of PD’s, each with their own cause for occurrence. During this research project I designed 6 samples with different PD sources.

Contributions The initial question you should ask yourself is why we do research in these PD’s, what does it contribute to our society?

We can understand this part by looking in our daily life, where it is nearly impossible to function without electricity. We need it for everything, from a simple burning light in your house to operating huge skyscrapers, and not to forget our day to day activities like cooking and using your smartphone.

Nearly all consumers want, and expect, an uninterrupted electricity supply. The cost associated with the failure to deliver continuous power can be great, not only for the consumer, but also for the distributor. Therefore, it is even more important to do periodic and proper maintenance, and efficiently operate the electricity grid. With preventive maintenance, for

instance with partial discharge measurements, maintenance costs and time can be reduced. PD detection is one of the most promising methods for determining the condition of power systems and for monitoring and detecting possible insulation defects in components of power systems before a fault occurs.

The current on-line partial discharge monitoring systems are too expensive and complex.

Because of this, they cannot be implemented on a large scale for online monitoring of MV cables.

Partial discharge measurements are an effective tool for insulation diagnostics and assessment. Therefore, a good understanding of these PD measurements is an essential part of an electrical engineers background knowledge.

Achievements during the project The artificially created defects are placed in a coaxial set-up such that they could easily be connected and disconnected, to measure a single - or multiple defect combinations. (see Figure 1) All these defects are equally divided and have the same path length, so the PD’s from each defect are equally attenuated and distorted by their propagation through the equal loop.

results compared to the PRPD analysis.

All the findings and their consistency were confirmed with more data, by combining different artificially created defects and sometimes with extra artificially created defects.

With these findings it is possible to make the Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring system cheaper and less complicated.

Aside from these findings the designed PD test platform is compact and ideal for educational purposes and to train people and test equipment, and for further research purposes.

Phase Resolved Partial Discharge analysis is normally used for partial discharge origin recognition under AC voltage. In this research project, the initial step towards PD defect origin recognition for AC voltage without any phase dependency was conducted with the use of Time-Resolved Partial Discharge analysis (hereafter ‘TRPD’). The TRPD graphs were characterized, analyzed, and checked for possibilities for defect origin recognition.

During my research I proved that it is possible to conduct the time analysis and recognition for AC voltage for the artificially created defects.

From the analysis done in the thesis, it can be concluded that the TRPD analysis for PD recognition under AC voltage is as good as, or even better than, phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) analysis. For most of the data analyzed, the TRPD analysis provides the same

Reflections Looking back at the time and energy spent in achieving this master thesis/degree, I learned and improved a lot. The main improvements are not only knowledge related but also the acquired skills, tools, discipline and professionalism are unique gains

During your master thesis or other moments of your “scholar career” there are always setbacks. Do not see these setbacks as failures, but as an opportunity to learn, improve and start over again to become more intelligent and achieve your set goal.

And remember, the only place where success literally comes before work is in the dictionary!!

On the 10 th of October 2016 I will move (back) to Curaçao, where I will work in my family’s company, called “Gewi Technical Services”. Next to this I’ve been asked to give lectures at the University of Curacao, so hopefully in the next quarter I will get this opportunity as a part-time job. Aside from this I will keep improving my knowledge with related courses and part-time studies (e.g. verlichtingsdeskundige).

Entrepreneurship on Curaçao

Skempi is a digital music service that gives users around the world access to the best music from independent Caribbean artists. Skempi’s collection of music manages to cater to almost everyone’s musical tastes as the service provides over a 100 types of different musical genres. The platform has become a daily habit for thousands of people, and every day gains more massive popularity in the region. ABC Compas interviewed one of the Skempi founders; Gino Jacobs. This is his story.

My personal background I attended Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in International Business Management (2011) and immediately thereafter my master’s degree in Strategic Management (2012).

During my studies I worked at a Dutch asset management where I had several positions in a span of four years. I was also the manager of a student building and the president of Kiva, a non-profit organization aimed at reconnecting Curaçaoan young professionals living abroad with their native Curaçao.

In 2012 I returned to my native island where I worked as a senior consultant at Bearingpoint Caribbean and later as the commercial director of Extura (2016). But the proudest achievement of my return was the co-founding, along with Boudino de Jong, of Skempi, the first and only Caribbean online music streaming platform which specifically targets the music coming from independent artists in the Caribbean region.

It’s as simple as going on www.skempi.com and clicking away to discover these artists, either through our top 40, explore, new or trending tabs. Users from all over the world have easy access to what is offered on the site and we get traffic from destinations as far as Romania, Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

The Skempi story How did we get started? Skempi’s inception story is actually a winter story. Boudino and I went to study abroad in the Netherlands where the winters were very unpleasant, inclement weather was the order of the day.

These conditions drove us back to Curaçao every December where we would go to the beach, hang out at friends’ houses, go to parties and our favorite bars and restaurants. But above all we enjoyed the music we heard being played everywhere.

When it would be time to head back across the Atlantic in January it was always a heartwrenching experience for us. But one thing that kept us warm in the bitter cold was the music

However, we noticed that music from these artists was very scattered. More often than not, to get our hands on music from Curaçaoan or Aruban legends as well as considerably current artists we would need to know someone who knew someone else who just happened to have a discarded CD stashed somewhere in their study room. Hence, these artists had virtually no online presence.

We decided it was time to bring a change to this, to begin the process of carving out an online space for these musicians. Partly to ensure they not be forgotten by the next generation of Dutch Caribbeans but mostly because we saw the potential for the capture of the international

market by musicians from not only Curaçao, but the other counterparts of the ABC-islands as well. The same way musicians from other islands in the Caribbean have accomplished this.

Much like Reggae played a pivotal role in entering Jamaica into the global lexicon, the Dominican Bachata and Merengue reached worldwide acclaim and the Cuban and Puerto Rican creations of Salsa and Reggaeton reached all corners of the world, we believe music from the ABC islands has the same potential to penetrate global markets.

And the language (Papiamentu) is not a barrier, just look at how in 2012 people in many countries around the world went crazy over “Gangnam Style” and “Se Eu Te Pego” without knowing a word of Korean or Portuguese. We believe in the potential of the music from these islands and we have expanded this belief to encompass those from independent artists from the entire Caribbean. This includes not only the islands, but also the Caribbean coastal regions of Colombia, Venezuela and the countries of Central America.

We have since grown into a very driven and diverse team including a Dutch member, an Aruban member, a Romanian-Canadian member living in Germany, she worked for a tech company Skempi interacted with last year and has been part of the Skempi movement ever since, a Tunisian member, the founders found him online when they were looking for programmers, and a Colombian-Curaçaoan member living in Colombia, a childhood friend of several team members. The rest are all Curaçaoan members.

Enterpreneurship on Curaçao I have also been a partner at Profound Projects since 2016, a web-development company specializing in online solutions for Caribbean based SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises), where I am laser focused on out-of-the-box designs and non-waste project management.

Both Skempi and Profound Projects have their headquarters located in the Startup Curaçao co-working space in Scharloo, an office space which caters to entrepreneurs who are at the helm of tech and creative startups. I would say that Curaçao is an auspicious island for this kind of community due to the fact that the island is basically a stepping stone between three continents: North America, South America and Europe.

Because of this we receive information about innovations in the field of startups and the tech industry from all three, in particular Europe and North America, and are able to cross-reference that with models we know already exist or which have yet to pop up on the market here.

Plans for the future With Skempi I plan to continue to do my part to expand our database to encompass music from a grand majority of the independent artists in the Caribbean region and we are already well on track to making that happen with almost 2000 artists already on the site.

And with Profound Projects the ambition is similar: to expand our clientele to include SMEs from across the Caribbean. Why the Caribbean?

Because we understand that businesses in the Caribbean require specialized solutions when it comes to operating online.

Snap on!

It has been 5 years since ABC Compas was founded. Anyone who has started a business or is around children knows that the first five years are quite crucial. In those five years there is a lot of building going on, a lot of growth and especially a lot of investing in your product and business. You are starting something from the ground up, which is probably why the first years are labeled as a start-up. It is not often that you see startups that are pretty much settled and ready to go, but as usual there are exceptions to the norm.

One of the major exceptions is Snapchat. There is no millennial around who does not know what Snapchat is, unless you live under a rock that is.

But to those of you under a huge rock, Snapchat is an image messaging and multimedia mobile application, which is just a fancy way to say that it’s an app on your smartphone that can send video as well as photo messages. What probably made Snapchat stand out compared to other apps is the famous disappearing story.

You can pretty much post anything you like on your Snapchat story, because it will disappear in 24 hours anyways. Not only that, but you could also send friends a photo or video of you doing something totally embarrassing knowing that it will disappear as soon as they have seen it. These were initially what drew millennials to the app.

About five years ago, before we ever even heard about a so called Snapchat there was “Picaboo”.

This was the prototype for Snapchat started by Evan Spiegel and Reggie Brown (who allegedly first pitched the idea of temporary photos).

Spiegel, who was a product design major, made the prototype as a project for one of his classes at Stanford. The idea was that users could communicate using messages that were shortlived. Bobby Murphy was later on brought in by Spiegel and Brown to write the source code for the application. Picaboo was first launched in July 2011, but it was then re-launched 2 months later in September 2011 as Snapchat. The three worked together for a few months, straight through the initial product release, until Spiegel and Murphy decided to deny Brown further access a few weeks before relaunching the app as Snapchat.

This app that was launched in 2011 now hits 10 billion views per day and it is valued at around 20 billion dollars. It has been long discussed

why Snapchat has been such a success.

Snapchat has been seen as a new innovative direction in social media, where millennials, its main users, crave a more spontaneous way of sharing and communication via technology. The emphasis was less on collecting likes and status’ and more on living in the moment. Snapchat's therefor very appropriately chosen logo, named Ghostface Chillah based on Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan, is there to represent the "There, then gone" nature of the app. Although it has been long speculated that Snapchat is mostly used for sexting or sharing sexual content because of its fleeting and private nature, it will probably come to no surprise that it is mostly used for comedic purposes. Most users just simply enjoy the creativity that comes with being able to draw on their photo’s or the ability to add geofilters. But what Snapchat is mostly used for is the silly face. Next time you snap or fill your story with silly faces just remember that you are helping write a very rare success story. Snap on millennials, Snap on!

BRENCHI’S

LAB

Aruba importeert 5000 ton plastic per jaar, maar produceert zelf veel minder. Er zijn veel redenen hiervoor; de productieschaal, de cultuur, de regering etc. Na inkoop en gebruik stapelt het plastic afval zich op langs de kust. Er is geen sprake van recycling of het apart inzamelen van chemisch afval. Christie Mettes en Tony Sevold dachten dat juist daarom een kleinschalige digitale fabricatie een goede mogelijkheid zou zijn voor Aruba. Het idee was om klein te beginnen, en hopelijk snel te groeien. Brenchie’s Lab is daarom bezig met de digitale fabricatie en recycling van plastic.

In 2014 zijn ze begonnen met een project om digitale fabricatiemachines te bouwen op Aruba. Na meer dan 20 sponsorbrieven te schrijven en constant een negatief antwoord terug te krijgen, besloten ze het op een andere manier aan te pakken en de machines te bouwen uit e-waste. Deeltjes werden uit oude printers en computers gehaald, er werd restmateriaal van aluminium deur fabrikanten gebruikt en ook donaties in de vorm van oude computers van scholen werd goed gebruikt. Met een groep geïnteresseerden hebben ze in Ateliers ’89 twee maanden lang machines gebouwd. Men ging resourceful aan de slag; ze hebben een zaag van een neef geleend en andere materialen brachten mensen gewoon mee. Op deze manier was het mogelijk om een 3D printer, een CNC router en plotter te bouwen op Aruba.

Na het bouwen was nog niet helemaal duidelijk wat er met de machines ging gebeuren.

Na de machines op verschillende locaties te plaatsen waar ze steeds niet werden gebruikt zijn deze uiteindelijk terecht gekomen bij Glen Goddijn en de Academy of Fine Arts and Design of Aruba.

Doordat Glen zelf al 3D ontwerp gebruikte, werden de machines toen veel beter gebruikt. Kort hierna kreeg Christie een telefoontje van UNOCA: ze wilden hun fablab concept uitbreiden.

Zo ging in 2016 Brenchie’s uiteindelijk open, met verschillende open source machines gefinancierd door UNOCA en de ruimte van de Academy of Fine Arts and Design. De naam Brenchie’s lab staat natuurlijk voor Brenchie’s Hardware die vroeger in datzelfde gebouw was gehuisvest.

De achterliggende gedachte is dat toegang tot dit soort gereedschappen kan leiden tot de ontwikkeling van ontwerpen en oplossingen die toepasbaar zijn op de Arubaanse en bredere Caribische context. Brenchie’s Lab ziet dit als de toekomst; een ‘Hack’ en ‘Maak’ cultuur waar consumeren minder passief wordt en waar dingen constant worden aangepast, gerepareerd, uit elkaar gehaald en ‘ge-upgraded’.

Dat zijnde is het Lab ook actief hiermee bezig.

Brenchie’s Lab ging in januari open in een event met ATECH roadtrip. Tijdens de opening maakte Christie al meteen de belofte dat, wanneer het lab goed gebruikt wordt, Brenchie’s over zal gaan tot het zelf produceren van plastic filament door plastic afval te recyclen. Brencie’s Lab was dan ook al op zoek naar projecten zoals de protocycler en fillabot in de VS of de perpetual plastic en wasted labs in Nederland. Toen het project van Dave Hakkens precious plastic populair werd, besloten ze om het een stap verder te nemen. Precious Plastic is een open source ontwerp voor 4 machines, een plastic shredder, injection mold, compression mold en een plastic extruder. De Plastic Beach Party wil deze machines bouwen samen met wat simpelere modellen zoals plastic ovens of wasted labs. Om dit op te bouwen zijn ze bezig met een crowdfund campagne voor $5000 om dit helemaal op te zetten.

Wat gaat dan gemaakt worden van al dit plastic afval? Eigelijk wil Brenchie’s Lab daar beginnen. Het doel is uiteindelijk om dingen te maken. Met de hulp van ontwerper Lewis Just zijn ze in juli begonnen met 6 weken van design thinking sessions. Gedurende deze 6 weken ontwerpen verschillende geïnteresseerden, producten, specifiek voor de Arubaanse markt. Als het goed gaat, zal dus de lokale bevolking zelf investeren in het recyclen en in de ontwikkeling van de producten. Zij zullen zelf het business model daarvoor ontwikkelen, en meedoen aan het bouwen van de machines.

Digitial Fabrication is natuurlijk ook deel van de opleiding die de Academy of Fine Arts and Design biedt en faciliteert, daardoor heeft een nieuwe generatie in de kunst toegang tot veel van dezelfde gereedschappen als studenten in Nederland. Daarnaast krijgt Brenchie’s Lab ook steun van het Stimulerings fonds uit Nederland om de “maak”-cultuur te inspireren . Er zijn verschillende korte workshops georganiseerd met andere makers in het gebied.

Hieronder vielen workshops over onder andere 3D printing met FabLab Puerto Rico (ontwerp en architectuur school van Turabo), bio-hacking met Interspecifics uit Mexico, partnerschappen en business models voor de creative industry met Olabi uit Brazilie, en Circular Economy met Chris van Metabolic in Amsterdam.

Brenchie’s werkt hiermee ook samen met Arubaanse organisaties zoals BEAM, Co.labs, ATECH, Setar, het Archeologisch Museum, Mltpl choice.

Brenchie’s Lab is elke maandag van 13:00 -20:00 open voor het publiek waar zij de mogelijkheid bieden om te 3D printen, CNC snijden, plotten en 3D scanners en het programmeren met microcontrollers.

Changing the unchangeable As young innovators, creators and dreamers we are all full of ideas on how to make our world a better place. With our academic background and our youthful ambition we go out into a world that is in need of change.

Sadly we quickly realize that the change which organizations, systems and people need, tends to be difficult to come to. Change is hard, and to create external lasting change is even harder.

To understand how we can be more effective in bringing change we must first understand the underlying mechanisms of change and why things are the way they are.

Things are the way they are because that’s the way they always were, except when they weren’t.

Every organization starts as an innovative and flexible system with certain dynamic goals.

These organizations start out with bright minds and good ideas to better society (or make profit) in a unique way. Gradually along the way this becomes less and less. Organizational theory gives us a plethora of reasons for it. Max Weber created the concept of the Iron cage bureaucracy.

Most of the time we relate the term bureaucracy with government organizations. A bureaucracy is any organization which has a strong division of labor, a hierarchical chain of command which rules based on regulations and a specialized and educated workforce which perform specifically assigned tasks. Most corporations and governmental organizations function as a bureaucracy.

The iron cage is phenomenon where humans seem to get trapped in a decision-making process based solely on regulations and not really looking at the external factors. Goalshifting comes into play, in which the existence and rules of the organization itself become a goal, instead of the values that the organization was founded on.

Organizations consist out of individuals.

Individuals also, get accustomed to doing what they normally do and have the tendency to

fight against people that bring up things that are different than what they have done. No, it’s not because they are bitter old people that want to hold you back. Rather they do not see new ideas as something worthwhile because they are not always aware of the problem, above and beyond the fact that people do not like to turn their back on their values.

Rules, regulations and systems are created as a response to a specific problem. After a certain amount of time these rules become tradition, even after the problem has disappeared. This is the reason why organizations and individuals can be resistant to change. They feel that changing a certain characteristic is equal to changing the values of an organization. This can be felt as a personal attack on what they believe in and as an erosion of all that they’ve worked on.

Understanding all of this, the question how to make change happen, still arises. To change anything we need to start with ourselves. What is it I want to change? Why do I want to change it? In what way can I start the change?

We need to pay attention to the message!

These two words encompass change: empathy and humility. Start by recognizing the underlying value of what already is. Show gratitude for the things that are working right.

Do not start by bashing it and calling it horrible.

Framing is everything. The way you make people feel about themselves will work wonders in allowing change to happen. Give suggestions based on the values of the people that surround you. Remind them of the commitment they have towards their goals and what they want to accomplish. And foremost remember, you cannot force change. All we can do is help create the conditions that allow others to be open for change. Let our words be the catalyst for change and let our actions be the substance on which it rests on.

Be the change you want to see.

5 tips for keeping it together

Let’s be honest university and college in general can be very overwhelming. The sheer number of deadlines and work alone can send someone over the edge. That is why we thought of 5 easy and practical tips that can help you keep it together and still manage to have somewhat of a social life.

Prioritize We might all know it, but don’t always do it! Keep a list of the most important things that need to be done first or that take up the most time, that way you give yourself a bit more wiggle room.

Plan ahead Keeping a planner will help you determine how much time you spend on your activities and school work. When planning keep in mind that you are realistic about how much time you will actually need for your tasks and activities.

Find a dedicated study space and time Humans are creatures of habit! So make it a habit to have a specific time and space where you do your schoolwork. Create or find a place that is free of distractions where you can study and complete your assignments.

Don’t forget about YOU Don’t get too caught up in your school work. As much as it is important to meet your deadlines and keep up with classes, it is just as important to stay sane. Take breaks in between to do the things you enjoy doing and just relax.

5.

It’s okay to say no Let me rephrase: You don’t have to say yes to everything!

Sometimes you have to decline and invitation and that’s okay. Just decline politely and be clear for your reason. The same goes for your school curriculum. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Be aware of what you can handle and what works best for you!

MARCO’S EXCHANGE Ik ben Marco van der Woude, geboren op Curaçao. Ik studeer Industrieel Ontwerpen in Delft en ben in de eerste helft van mijn derde jaar voor mijn minor naar het buitenland gegaan.

Na 2 jaar in Delft te hebben gewoond, had ik behoefte aan wat nieuws en dat was de voornaamste reden om in het buitenland te gaan studeren. Ik had al van veel mensen gehoord hoe leuk het is om in het buitenland te studeren.

De tweede reden is, dat het natuurlijk heel goed staat op je CV, omdat je hiermee kan aantonen dat je verder dan je neus durft te kijken en uit het comfort van ‘thuis’ durft te stappen. Natuurlijk hebben we dat allemaal al een keer gedaan toen we van de ABC eilanden naar Nederland verhuisden, maar velen van ons hebben al familie en vrienden in Nederland. Voor mij was studeren in het buitenland iets dat je volledig zelf regelt en waar je dus ook heel trots op kunt zijn, als je na 6 maanden terugkomt.

Ik had ervoor gekozen om naar Stockholm te gaan, vooral ook omdat de andere steden waar ik uit kon kiezen geen aanbod hadden van hetgeen ik wilde leren. In het IO bachelor programma word je best breed opgeleid en moet je vooral zelf ontdekken wat je leuk vindt en waarin je je verder zou willen ontwikkelen.

Ik wist dat toen nog niet heel zeker, maar wat ik wel wist, was dat ik de business kant van de productontwikkeling leuk vond. Uit de lijst van universiteiten, bood de KTH in Stockholm de beste vakken die overeen kwamen met wat ik wilde. Bovendien wist ik dat het een hele mooie stad is en ik was zelf nog nooit naar Scandinavië geweest, dus het zou een leuk avontuur zijn.

Beleving Mijn standaard dag in Stockholm begon zoals elke andere dag, alleen dan een half uur eerder, omdat ik iets buiten de stad woonde in een hele mooie buurt: Lidingö. Ik moest vanaf hier met de bus en vervolgens overstappen op de metro die voor mijn universiteit stopte. Je hebt dan wat colleges en werkgroepen (veel minder contacturen dan in Delft) en als het mooi weer

was, ging ik daarna de stad in om wat te drinken met vrienden en vooral om plannen voor het weekend te maken. De weken in Stockholm waren gezellig, maar de weekenden, die waren bijzonder. Stockholm heeft een enorm leuk nachtleven waar het vooral draait om wie je kent en hoe je eruit ziet, dus iedereen ziet er dan ook enorm goed uit!

Ik heb enorm veel geleerd van de Zweedse cultuur, het is een cultuur die veel waarde hecht aan tradities maar minder warm is dan waaraan wij gewend zijn. Iedereen is veel aardiger dan wat ik had verwacht, maar de familieband die ik ken van Curaçao is heel belangrijk en in de Zweedse cultuur zie je dat minder.

Zoals ik eerder zei: de Zweden zien er allemaal goed uit en dat komt een beetje door de sociale druk waarbij het veel om geld draait. Zij zullen eerder sparen voor een dure Gucci tas dan voor een skateboard. Het is ook meteen een beetje vervelend dat alles daar ook wat duurder is, maar gelukkig kun je er heel slim mee omgaan.

Je hebt bijvoorbeeld veel studenten kortingen en wat wij deden, was wat shots nemen, net voordat we een club binnen gingen. Zo zag je er niet dronken uit bij de deur en hoefde je later niet heel veel geld uit te geven aan alcohol binnen de club. Veel mensen denken ook dat de winter daar heel vervelend is, maar ik vond juist dat het een charme heeft die je niet op veel andere plekken hebt. Het kerstsfeertje is daar enorm aanwezig en dat brengt ook wat leuke dingen met zich mee.

Al met al heb ik een enorm goede tijd gehad en ik zou iedereen zeker aanraden om naar het buitenland te gaan. Maak wel een goede afweging tussen wat je wilt leren en in welke stad je wilt verblijven. In het buitenland is datgene wat je leert buiten de colleges minstens zo belangrijk als datgene wat je in de colleges leert. Een andere tip is, probeer zoveel mogelijk met de lokale bevolking om te gaan. Er zijn heel wat activiteiten voor internationale studenten die leuk zijn, maar probeer zelf verder te zoeken.

BRAM’S INTERNSHIP Mijn naam is Bram Rooijakkers, geboren in Eindhoven in het mooie Brabant. Tot mijn 14e in Gemert gewoond, waarna mijn ouders besloten om naar Curaçao te verhuizen. Dat was natuurlijk super spannend en ik had zelf geen idee wat ik kon verwachten. Uiteindelijk netjes mijn VWO afgerond zonder onnodig tijdverlies.

Zoals je dat van jongs af aan al te horen krijgt, is het na het afronden van je middelbare school de bedoeling om een vervolgopleiding te kiezen. Na een iets te lange zoektocht (vlieger bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht, Marinier en Luchtvaart- & Ruimtevaarttechniek) ben ik uitgekomen bij de studie bouwkunde. Dit sprak me aan, omdat het de perfecte mix is tussen creatief en technisch werk.

Op het moment ben ik bezig met het afronden van mijn bachelor (nog een aantal tentamens voor het einde bewaard) en ik heb besloten om er een half jaartje tussenuit te gaan om wat werkervaring op te doen in het echte bedrijfsleven. Normaal gesproken doe je je stage tijdens je minor, maar die zat er voor mij al op.

Dus dit stond in principe compleet los van mijn studie. Ik hoef dan ook geen stageverslag te schrijven of iets dergelijks.

Het lopen van een stage is een goede manier om geïntroduceerd te worden in het werk dat je de rest van je leven zult gaan doen en in het geval van de bouwkunst en architectuur is het een grote bonus om werkervaring te hebben.

Vandaar de keuze om een extra stage in mijn bachelor te doen. Verder denk ik dat het in je studietijd belangrijk is om veel aspecten van het vak mee te maken nu je er nog tijd voor hebt.

Ik heb mezelf altijd al voorgenomen om werk te zoeken in het buitenland, vooral omdat Nederland me niet zozeer aanspreekt en het altijd leuk is om nieuwe ervaringen op te doen in een ander deel van de wereld. Het was dan natuurlijk ook goed nieuws toen ik hoorde dat ik in Sydney aangenomen was als stagiair.

Het is niet zo dat ik specifiek voor Australië heb gekozen (aangezien de stage meer op mijn pad was gekomen), maar het land heeft me wel altijd aangesproken.

Deze stage was mijn eerste echte werkervaring; dus ik was behoorlijk zenuwachtig om te beginnen. Wat me daarbij heeft geholpen, is om er open in te stappen en niet veel te verwachten.

Dat geeft wat minder druk op je schouders.

De zenuwen waren uiteindelijk nergens voor nodig, want vanaf het moment dat het werk begon, is de tijd voorbij gevlogen. Het verbaasde me hoe snel de routine van een 40-urige werkweek went. Elke dag vroeg op om dezelfde tijd. Met het openbaar vervoer (ov) naar het werk. Bij dezelfde koffietent waar ze mijn naam na 2 maanden nog steeds verkeerd wisten te spellen (Barn was de leukste) een cappuccino halen. En dan begint het werk om 9 uur. Tijdens lunchtijd (meestal met collega`s) wat eten halen en een uur later weer aan het werk tot 6 uur.

Met het ov naar huis, eten koken en dan naar bed.

Aan het begin van mijn stage heb ik veel moeten leren over het werk, maar dit was geen probleem en iedereen was zeer geduldig en bereid om bepaalde dingen uit te leggen. Daarbij is het belangrijk om meteen vragen te stellen en het niet zelf proberen op te lossen, want dat is verspilling van tijd en vooral geld.

De beste ervaring van mijn stage was het afronden van een project waar ik vanaf het begin tot het eind aan heb gewerkt. Hierbij ben ik naar veel meetings geweest met de cliënt, wat zeer leerzaam was. Ik heb daarbij vooral meegekregen dat de cliënt de belangrijkste rol speelt in het hele proces.

De slechtste ervaring was het samenwerken met iemand die moeite had met communiceren.

Daarom was er een aantal misverstanden, die makkelijk voorkomen hadden kunnen worden waardoor het overwerken die avond niet nodig was geweest.

En een tip die ik kan meegeven is dat je uiteraard moet genieten van je stage en veel (werk-) relaties vast moet leggen. Die komen altijd nog van pas.

How CuraÇao contributes to the connected world Curaçao has undergone a lot of change over the course of its recorded history.Originally inhabited by the Arawak people, discovered by the Spanish and eventually settled by the Dutch West India Company. The island’s name is believed to have been derived from ‘Isla de Curação’, meaning ‘island of healing or curing’ in Portuguese. Sailors used to leave their sick stranded on the island, and return to find them healed.

Curaçaoans occupy high ranks at several global enterprises, international organisations and big name tech companies. Their success is of course thanks to personal investment, opportunities and efforts, but the advantages of being raised in the environment like that on the island isn’t negligible. Having been exposed to such diverse and dominant cultures, islanders are more likely to understand differences and subtleties that others might struggle with. Combined with exposure to world languages like Spanish and English, Curaçaoans thrive in environments like those of diversely staffed tech companies and global institutions.

Over the 500 or so years since, Curaçao went from a remote island in the caribbean to a international trade and shipping hub, tourist destination and cultural melting pot. The island now enjoys a High Income Economy thanks to its convenient location, diverse income sectors and international relations. Curaçaoans enjoy practically all the benefits of being a Dutch citizen, including possession of a Dutch passport.

This means that Curaçaoans can move about freely through the European Union and even take up residence following certain procedures.

I’ve come to know many Curaçaoans working at key positions at companies like Unilever, Royal Dutch Shell and Uber here in the Netherlands.

All proficient in communicating with and managing relations with people from all over the world. Some are engineers, some surgeons, others creatives, developers and even some major league athletes. Curaçaoans don’t even need to leave the island to make an impression on a scale much larger than one might expect from a place with a population of just 150,000.

The world also comes to Curaçao, for better and for worse.

Curaçaoans on average speak at least 3 languages in varying degrees of proficiency, usually a combination of English, Dutch, Spanish and Papiamentu. The local language itself being the result of a fusion between these and other languages. This rooted affinity for being multilingual provides many raised on the island a big advantage in today’s increasingly connected world. This resulting in Curaçaoans taking up positions and titles of great influence, including at companies and organisations that operate at a global scale.

In the end, Curaçao remains a very important and relatively prosperous little rock near South America. As time goes by, people seem more aware of its beauty, its unique culture and ambitious citizens. While we may not exactly be quite world renowned, we - more often than not - show that we are capable of doing things on a larger scale. In a way, the island has in recent times become even more diverse in the ways it influences the world and many people who inhabit it. The world is our oyster and Curaçao is its pearl.

An interview with Tristan Every on the 2016 ATECH conference On the 28th and 29th of August, the international technology conference “ATECH” was organised on Aruba. The conference focused on offering networking opportunities to tech startups and entrepreneurs as well as key global players in the technology and startup scene.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little more about yourself?

Your field of study, your background, where have you lived, why are you interested in technology?

My name is Tristan Every, from Aruba, and I’m the co-founder and President of ATECH Foundation, the organizer of ATECH Conference, which will kick off its second edition in September on Aruba. I’ve studied accounting, auditing and control at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam. I’ve lived and worked in the Netherlands for eleven years before returning to Aruba. I’m also the co-founder of Co.lab Community Aruba, a community for startups, entrepreneurs, and creative, and I’m a business partner in Create, a creative technologies solutions provider.

Nowadays it’s hard to go by anything without technology. It plays such an important role and it’s therefore important to educate and stimulate professionals and entrepreneurs alike to stay informed of the latest tech trends and innovations, and to apply these in their businesses.

Besides the description on the website, could you tell us more about ATECH conference?

ATECH Conference is ATECH Foundation’s first step into creating a tech ecosystem for startups on Aruba. It’s part of a 3-step plan. ATECH Conference is a 3-day conference where more than 25 international speakers will share their experiences and insights on traveltech, fintech, and internet of things by means of keynotes, panel discussions, one-on-one interviews, and breakout sessions.

There will be speakers from Google, Burning Man, The Next Web, Rockstart, Startup Chile, Guidrr, Luma Capital, Roam, Verge, Clarifai, Visit. org, and much more.

Aside from international speakers there will

be local speakers as well from local institutions such as the Aruba Tourism Authority, Caribbean Mercantile Bank, Aruba Investment Bank, to name a few.

During the conference there will also be a Demo Pitch Competition where 12 startups from around the world (Aruba, Trinidad, Venezuela, Mexico, the Netherlands, Israel, Ukraine, USA) will compete to win $20.000. These startups were selected out of more than 150 applications by a committee of experts.

I read ATECH serves as a platform for startups around the world, how did you start it all up? Who came up with this idea to start a ‘tech’ platform on Aruba, and when?

Do you also support local tech startups? When do they qualify to participate in the conference?

ATECH started when the eventual co-founders, Tristan Every, Varelie Croes, Rudy Croes, and Kris Croes, were talking and sharing their vision for their startups and Aruba in general. It was right then and there that we realized that Aruba has so much to offer and the potential to become a player in the tech and startup scene. Aruba has the right infrastructure, we speak at least 4 languages, we have a good judicial system, great connections to USA, Latin America, and Europe, and we belong to the Dutch Kingdom. It simply made sense and after talking to partners and stakeholders it all seemed logical to do. And by combining our network, we are creating magic!

We support local startups 100%. After the first edition in 2015, numerous local attendees have come forth and have developed their own startup. And we’re happy to be able to share these results in this year’s edition.

Part of ATECH Foundation’s 3-step plan, step 2, is kicking off an accelerator program for local and international startups called ATECH XL. Prior to the conference 5 startups will start their participation as a pilot program.

All startups who would like to take part in the Demo Pitch Competition were required to apply with our sister platform F6S, which is a platform for startup and entrepreneurs with over 1.5 million members. This year’s deadline was June 30. Other startups who wish to showcase their startup at ATECH Conference can apply to man a startup booth in the Startup Expo during the conference.

Does ATECH consist of a team; do you have a board? If so, could you mention the names of the board members? Do you have a president? Do you have any members? Tell me more about the organizational part of ATECH.

Is ATECH active throughout the whole year? As in, when does the conference take place? Have you set apart a few months in which you will be having a conference, or do you simply fit the conferences in the agenda of your guest speakers?

ATECH is a foundation consisting of: Tristan Every (President), Varelie Croes (Treasurer), Kris Croes (Secretary), and Rudy Croes (Board Member).

ATECH Foundation is a non-profit organization that consists mainly of the co-founders.

Supporting the foundation are a number of partners, mentors, and volunteers.

ATECH is active throughout the year. ATECH Conference takes place from September 15 to 17.

Aside from the conference ATECH hosts local and international Hacakthons, gives presentations, organizes brainstorming sessions, organizes local and international meetups, and runs the accelerator. You can also find ATECH co-founders as speakers at conferences and seminars in the region, and also taking part of a number of committees and think tanks.

Have you thought about the idea of collaborating with more islands in the Caribbean or starting an ATECH conference somewhere else? Do you have any connection, like-minded people on the other islands that are willing to make it happen?

(Especially with the Dutch Caribbean islands)

I’ve seen a list of all the past speakers of this year, and all I could think was “how did these guys pull this off?”

Okay, this is my real question: Who selects the guest speakers, how do you get in contact with them, and how do you persuade them to participate in the conference?

This is something we continuously discuss within the team and there has been talks with potential partners in the region. And we definitely consider expanding ATECH to neighboring islands. Right now our main goal is setting up a solid foundation on Aruba, having key elements set in place, before doing so.

One thing ATECH keeps reminding us about as a team is to simply be bold and just do it. On the one hand we have built a solid network locally and internationally of very interesting startup founders, investors, mentors, and ambassadors.

Reaching out to them and brainstorming with them leads to attracting great speakers.

On the other hand it’s simply ‘who do we want’ and just get in touch. You never know what they might say. One thing is for sure, not reaching out will definitely lead to not landing some of these amazing speakers.

And of course, inviting them to Aruba does make it easier ;)

éKompas | issue no.3 | What would you like to achieve with this tech conference platform on Aruba? What does ATECH mean for Aruba, and how is it influencing the economy, the culture, the tourism, can you tell us more about the positive impact of such platform on a small island as Aruba?

First of all, we would like to inspire everyone with an idea to pursue this. Using technology nowadays can work wonders. Secondly, we would like to stimulate a different approach of doing business with ATECH, a message of sharing and collaborating. Lastly, as I’ve mentioned, ATECH is creating a tech ecosystem for startups on Aruba. The potential this has is endless. From creating a different economic pillar, one that is knowledge-based, to pushing for a curriculum that meets today’s requirements of technology and innovation. From creating new jobs to creating an economic spin-off effect. From attracting startups and investors, to attracting a different type of tourist.

Where do you see ATECH conference in 10 years from now? Are you currently working towards this goal? Or making any changes to get there?

As I said, ATECH Foundation has a 3-step plan.

In 10 years, the conference will not only be one of the hottest conference regionally, but one of the best tech conferences globally. One that can be compared to SXSW. ATECH XL will become the premier travel accelerator in the world with many successful graduates making their names on the global scene.

And to top it of Aruba (and the region) will become a top tier tech ecosystem where startups, investors, institutions, and universities will go to establish and connect.

life after college Phillip Van Alstede is een TUDelft en een ABC Compas Alumni. Na het afronden van zijn studie aan de TuDelft is hij een post graduate opleiding gaan volgen aan de Harvard University in de V.S. In dit interview vertelt hij hoe hij deze stap heeft gemaakt en over welke stappen nog volgen.

Waar kom je vandaan?

Ik ben geboren in Nederland en heb daar 4 jaar gewoond. Mijn moeder is Curaçaose en mijn vader is Nederlander. Rond mijn vierde besloten mijn ouders (terug) te gaan naar Curaçao waar ik tot en met mijn 18e heb geleefd totdat ik naar Nederland vertrok om te studeren.

Wat heb je gestudeerd aan de TU Delft?

Ik begon als bachelor-student Bouwkunde aan de TU Delft. Daarna ben ik de master Real Estate & Housing gaan doen wat tegenwoordig Management in the Built Environment heet.

Wat waren je plannen na het afstuderen?

Ik probeerde altijd hier en daar wat klusjes te doen tijdens het studeren om toch in aanraking te blijven met de praktijk. Tijdens mijn afstuderen, ging ik voor het eerst werken bij een wat groter bedrijf, Syntrus Achmea Real Estate & Finance wat een beleggingsbedrijf is in de vastgoed-sector. Na mijn afstuderen heb ik voor een periode van 6 maanden gewerkt bij de INREV. Deze organisatie houdt zich bezig met het analyseren van investeringen in vastgoedfondsen. Ik hield me bezig met “professional standards” wat eigenlijk “best practices” ontwikkelt over hoe je investeert in deze fondsen.

Beviel het werken of miste je het studeren?

Het werken beviel me goed. Echter, ik heb bepaalde aspecten van studeren altijd heel fijn gevonden. Met name het gevoel dat ik nog keuzevrijheid had en mezelf als asset kon ontwikkelen in specialistische vakgebieden waar ik mogelijk nog wat mee zou willen doen.

Je moet maar net een bedrijf vinden waar ze de mogelijkheid bieden tot specialistische

opleidingen of waar het werk op zichzelf voldoende ruimte biedt om kennis op te doen.

Het gevoel dat je specifieke dingen moet leren om een taak te vervullen binnen een bedrijf, is vaak anders dan het gevoel dat je vrij bent om jezelf te ontwikkelen in whatever you want.

Had je gedacht dat je ooit weer zou gaan studeren?

Ja, ik was tijdens mijn masterfase begonnen aan een module van een post graduate degree aan de Amsterdam School of Real Estate die ik van plan was af te ronden na mijn master fase.

Wat voegt een extra studie/post graduate degree voor jou en je carrière toe?

Vanuit een persoonlijk perspectief voel ik dat wonen, werken en studeren in de Verenigde Staten en in Nederland in verschillende aspecten van je vakgebied je duidelijk maakt waar je voorkeur ligt en waar met zekerheid bepaalde toekomstscenario’s je kan helpen kiezen of juist kan helpen uitsluiten.

Vanuit een carrière perspectief ben ik van mening dat een verbreding van je skill-set en kennisniveau altijd ten goede komt aan je loopbaan. Er is veel werkloosheid binnen de bouwsector; met name binnen de architectuur.

Door de focus te leggen op Vastgoedkunde en Finance hoop ik altijd nuttig te kunnen zijn. Bouwkunde is op zichzelf nog niet een heel bruikbare bachelor in tegenstelling tot Luchtvaart- en Ruimtevaarttechniek of Werktuigbouwkunde. De sector ontwikkelt ook snel, technologische mediums dagen met name architecten en makelaars uit om de sector bij te houden.

Ik ben altijd van mening geweest dat meerdere kennisinstituten en manieren van leren (colleges, casussen, projects etc.) een aanvulling en verbreding kunnen zijn op je skill-set.

Waarom ben je weer gaan studeren?

Met name om de kwaliteit van het onderwijs elders te bekijken en toch even die tijd in het buitenland te hebben om het allemaal uit te testen. Ook voelde ik dat ik iets extra’s naast de TU op papier nodig had om uit te blinken in de internationale sfeer.

Waarom per se deze school/opleiding?

Het programma Real Estate & the Built Environment is in feite een open programma waar je vakken op alle “Grad Schools” van zowel Harvard of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) kunt kiezen die buren van elkaar zijn. Dit was voor mij zeer aantrekkelijk, omdat ik een programma naar mijn eigen wensen in elkaar kon zetten. Dit hield ook in de professoren en de omgeving waar ik erg veel verwachtingen van had. Het afstuderen behelst ook een wetenschappelijk onderbouwd Business Plan. Dit in tegenstelling tot een scriptie die me behoorlijk de keel uit begon te hangen. De reputatie van de instelling zelf heeft me ook overtuigd om toch nog een laatste keer te gaan studeren. Ik kreeg ook financiële steun vanuit een Nederlands fonds om deze studie te bekostigen.

Wat hoop je met deze opleiding te bereiken?

Mijn ambities liggen vooral bij het internationaal ontwikkelen van grote projecten, zoals een “Working of Living Tower” in een Metropoolstad als New York of de ontwikkeling van een heel gebied, zoals Brickell in Miami. De opleiding draagt door haar netwerk en het kennisniveau bij aan het waarmaken van deze ambities. De projecten waarmee ik in aanraking kom, lijken groter te worden.

Wat zijn je toekomstvisies op korte termijn?

Ergens waar het werk leuk is, het weer lekker is en de mensen vriendelijk zijn. Ik zou dan graag een dergelijk groot project aan het bouwen zijn.

Denk je dat je ooit weer gaat studeren?

Het vreemde is dat ik meer een ondernemend dan een academisch type ben, maar toch ben ik verder gaan studeren. Na deze opleiding denk ik wel dat het voorlopig mooi is geweest, al klinkt Professor Phillip wel -bad ass-. Misschien na deze studies omgezet te hebben in dat grote mooie project.

Raad je anderen aan om ook een post-graduate opleiding te volgen?

Post-graduate studies zijn studies ingericht voor mensen die een beetje (minimaal 2 jaar) werkervaring hebben naast hun reguliere bachelor- of masterstudie die zich willen verdiepen en specialiseren in een vakgebied.

Ik raad het dus aan als het daadwerkelijk wat toevoegt aan je skills en kennis op een dusdanige manier dat het ook de investering waard is.

Houd er rekening mee dat naast de prijs; je ook veel extra tijd en werkervaring investeert of een jaar reizen na je studie inlevert: soms is dat wel afzien. Echt HOUDEN van studeren hoeft niet een eis te zijn. De voldoening dat je jezelf als specifieke asset ontwikkelt, je kunt innoveren binnen je sector en je jezelf in de gelegenheid stelt om op projecten te werken die je leuk vindt, lijken mij het meest belangrijk. Je zou een tweede master kunnen doen als je een toevoeging, zoals Rechten of General Finance wilt. Maar mocht je echt van je studie/werkrichting houden en binnen dat kader iets specifieks of wat meer wilt leren dan is het “Right For You”.

De ervaring van Karla Echeverry Caro Na een droevig afscheid, begon dit grote avontuur, namelijk ons studentenleven.

Persoonlijk vind ik dat er geen betere manier was om dit te beginnen dan door nieuwe vriendschappen te sluiten. Vriendschappen die voor altijd zullen bestaan.

Hoewel de woensdagochtend voor mij wat aan de late kant begon, werd ik verliefd op Delft. Haar oude centrum, mooie kanalen, iconische kerken, vriendelijke bewoners en niet te vergeten de rijke historie glimlachte ons toe. Een tour door het kanaal, een broodje Leo en een speurtocht waren de hoogtepunten van de dag. Het regende en waaide, maar zelfs dat kon de dag niet meer verpesten en zo is onze speurtocht begonnen.

De speurtocht was de show van ons leven, door zingen, dansen en acteren hebben wij het Delftse volk geamuseerd. Aan het einde van de dag hebben we een rondleiding gekregen op de fantastische campus TU Delft. En met bier en pizza, (ons dynamische duo) hebben we deze dag afgesloten. Zoals iedereen weet blijft Delft de stad van het eeuwige bier‌.

Opvang 2016 ABC Compas organiseert al vijf jaar de opvang voor de nieuwe eerstejaars Caribisch Nederlandse studenten in Delft. Dit jaarlijks evenement vindt plaats in de zomer als de nieuwe studenten net in Nederland zijn aangekomen en voordat het schooljaar officieel begint. Het doel hiervan is om de studenten kennis te laten maken met de stad Delft, met ABC Compas en vooral met elkaar.

De opvang bestaat uit een dag vol met avontuur.

Na de traditionele boottocht, het beklimmen van de kerktoren en het eten van een lekker broodje bij Leo van Vliet, hebben de studenten dit jaar meegedaan aan een speurtocht. In gemixte groepen van Curacaosche en Arubaanse studenten werden er verschillende opdrachten uitgevoerd om punten te verzamelen met als doel een route af te leggen van de stad naar de campus. Onderweg werd er kennis gemaakt met kenmerkelijke bezienswaardigheden in Delft en op de campus.

Na de speurtocht kregen de studenten een rondleiding op de campus van de TU, waarbij de studenten beter kennis kunnen maken met de campus en met de zogenoemde ‘secret places’ zoals de dream hall en de high voltage lab. Ook hebben de studenten de kans gekregen om hun eerste kijkje te nemen op hun faculteit. In tegenstelling tot de voorgaande jaren werd de lange dag afgesloten met pizza in plaats van de gebruikelijke barbeque. Het weer kon de pret niet drukken, want onder het genot van een pizza en een frisdrank werd het winnende team van de speurtocht bekend gemaakt. Het was een gezellige afsluiting van de dag voor alle aanwezigen; de nieuwe en oude leden van ABC Compas.

Johnny Cake

De Johnny Cakes komen oorspronkelijk uit Trinidad & Tobago, maar worden door heel het Caribisch gebied en zelfs Noord-Amerika gegeten. Ze zijn tegenwoordig ook niet meer weg te denken uit onze Antilliaanse keuken.

Jurino van antilliaans-eten.nl deelt met ons zijn recept voor de lekkerste Johnny cakes!

Aantal: 15 Johnny cakes Kosten: 10 – 15 euro max Tijd: 50 minuten

1. Meng de droge ingrediënten (de meel en het bakpoeder) goed door elkaar met een lepel. Voeg hierna in een uiltje de boter toe.

2. Meng het water met de melk, een theelepel zout en eetlepel suiker en voeg ook dit toe aan het meelmengsel.

Ingrediënten 500gr tarwebloem 1 eetlepel bakpoeder 1 theelepel zout 1 eetlepel suiker 2 eetlepels boter (gesmolten) 100ml water 100ml melk Olie om in te frituren

3. Kneed het geheel met een keukenmachine of met de handen tot een soepel deeg. Laat het deeg 15 minuten rusten.

4. Verdeel het deeg in kleine balletjes (ongeveer zo groot als een walnoot) en druk deze plat, zodat een schijfje ontstaat.

5. Verhit de olie tot ongeveer 75 graden en frituur de Johnny cakes totdat ze goudkleurig zijn, ongeveer 2 minuten per stuk.

6. Laat ze even afkoelen, snijd ze open en vul ze met b.v. kaas, vleeswaren of groenten.
