Much more than sex, drugs and rock’n’roll By means of a documentary film, Mallorca-based journalist Amanda Ferrer-Jeffrey is fighting the infamous image of the island’s British holiday enclave, Magaluf. Andreas John finds out more.

t´s been Mallorca´s Sodom and Gomorrah for years: The British holiday enclave Magaluf. Nowhere else do party people celebrate as excessively, flirting and drinking, as in the small resort only a few kilometres southwest of Palma. For the foreign media, particularly, Magaluf consists mainly of the 600-metre party strip known as ‘Punta Ballena’. Every year tens of thousands of mostly young British package tourists turn night into day. But last summer it was simply too much. A mobile phone video clip of a serial oral sex act in a Punta Ballena night club provoked an international media outrage and a storm of protest on the island. It was the starting point for Amanda FerrerJeffrey. For many years, the daughter of an Anglo-Mallorcan couple had been studying the image of ‘sin city’ Magaluf: “On every visit to England, when I started to live on Mallorca, I was always equated with the party-tourists in Punta Ballena. This was not only embarrassing, it annoyed me,” says the 30-year-old who has been working on the island as a freelance journalist, English teacher, and event presenter. Due to the surge of lurid headlines in the media about the seemingly unbridled sex and drug excesses in Magaluf, Amanda put a longawaited project into action. Her documentary with the headline ‘Mallorca is not Magaluf – Magaluf is not Punta Ballena’ will be aired in

ace años que se conoce como el Sodoma y Gomorra de Mallorca: hablamos del enclave turístico de Magaluf. No hay ningún otro sitio en el que haya más fiesta, más alcohol y más descontrol que en Magaluf, a unos kilómetros al sudeste de Palma. La calle de ‘Punta Ballena’, de unos 600 metros de longitud, suele ser tema recurrente para la prensa internacional: miles de turistas jóvenes, sobre todo ingleses, se pasean por la zona durante los meses de temporada alta disfrutando de sus vacaciones. Sin embargo, durante el verano pasado la situación ha escapado totalmente de control. La difusión de un vídeo grabado con un móvil que mostraba cómo una joven realizaba sexo oral a varios hombres uno tras otro en un local de Punta Ballena no sólo fue un huracán mediático local y nacional, sino también internacional. Este hecho impactó profundamente a la periodista Amanda Ferrer-Jeffrey. Hace años que Amanda, criada en Mallorca e hija de una pareja anglomallorquina, intentaba aislar la imagen negativa de Magaluf. “Cada vez que iba de visita a Inglaterra y comentaba que vivía en Mallorca, se me catalogaba inmediatamente como una turista más de Magaluf. No sólo me daba vergüenza, sino que era muy molesto“, relata la periodista de treinta años de edad que trabaja en Mallorca como freelance, profesora de inglés

Nirgendwo sonst wird so ausschweifend gefeiert, geflirtet und getrunken wie in dem kleinen Ferienort, nur ein paar Kilometer südwestlich von Palma entfernt. Insbesondere für die ausländischen Medien ist Magaluf und seine etwa 600 Meter lange Party-Meile „Punta Ballena“, auf der jedes Jahr zigtausende meist junger, britischer Pauschalurlauber die Nacht zum Tage machen, ein stets gefundenes Fressen. Doch im vergangenen Sommer eskalierte die Situation dort vollends. Das Fass zum Überlaufen brachte das Handy-Video eines Serien-Blowjobs in einem Nachtlokal der Punta Ballena, das nicht nur in den internationalen Medien sondern erstmals auch auf der Insel einen Sturm der Entrüstung nach sich zog. Es war aber auch die Stunde von Amanda Ferrer-Jeffrey. Bereits seit Jahren hatte sich die auf Mallorca aufgewachsene Tochter eines englisch-mallorquinischen Ehepaares mit dem Image von Magaluf als touristischem Sündenpfuhl auseinandergesetzt. „Wenn ich bei Besuchen in England erzählte, dass ich auf Mallorca lebte, wurde ich stets mit den Party-Urlauber in der Punta Ballena gleichgesetzt. Das war mir nicht nur peinlich, das ärgerte mich mit der Zeit auch“, erzählt die 30-Jährige, die auf der Insel als freiberufliche Journalistin, Englisch-Lehrerin und Event-Moderatorin tätig ist.
