If you have ever taken an art class at Pomona Catholic, you would know that Instructor, Ms. Cassandra Jones, Class of 2009 introduces you to every form of art possible. One of the newest and most popular forms of art that Ms. Jones has introduced to the program is Digital Art. Every spring semester, both the middle school and high school art students explore the different aspects of digital technology from learning how to draw on an iPad, to different types of animation skills, to creating stop motion videos and manipulating photography.

Digital Art increases students’ creativity and enhances skills such as critical thinking skills and entrepreneurial skills. It also increases student engagement and excitement for learning.

This past week Ms. Jones passed out school iPads and supplies to her art class in preparation for their 8-week Digital Art journey. Student, Jimmy Villavalzo is excited to learn a new skill and embraces the challenges ahead.

Greetings Pomona Catholic Community!

As we enter the second semester of the school year, optimism is growing in re-opening our campus for students. Pomona Catholic’s teachers and students have met the challenge of on-line learning with tenacity and strength! Our community continues to support one another as we all navigate this uncharted territory. Learning has not stopped! In this edition, you will see how our teachers continue to make learning dynamic even with distance learning.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the mental toll this has taken on our students, families, and faculty. Mrs. Kelly Guerrero, Class of 2004 school counselor has done an incredible job with outreach to families. Please contact her if you need help!

Procedures are well underway for next school year. Please re-enroll using our FACTS Family Portal by the end of the month. This guarantees your place for next year.

We could not be prouder of our Pacers earning Honor Roll for this first semester of the 2020-2021 school year! This first semester was challenging in ways we never imagined. What an incredible achievement during a semester entirely online.

Students have been challenged with added responsibilities and independence while working from home. Staying focused and motivated while feeling isolated and remote is a difficult balance, yet these students managed to persevere and achieve. This shows the resilience and dedication of our PC Pacers, well done!

HONOR ROLL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for Honor Roll is a 3.5 Semester GPA. A candidate for Honor Roll may have no D, F, or Incomplete Semester Grades. Students with an Incomplete grade during the time Honor Roll is calculated may be reconsidered once the Semester grade is cleared.

Eligibility for Principal’s Honor Roll is a Semester 4.0 GPA and all requirements for Honor Roll.

Please note that the GPA is used to calculate Honor Roll (not the UGPA).

Pomona Catholic School Freshmen Rose Mass On August 24, Pomona Catholic School opened the 2020-2021 school year by participating in the livestreamed parish Mass at Our Pomona Catholic School Class of 2024 prayed that a looming shutdown of the Los Angeles region would not impact their Freshmen Rose Mass. The prayers of the 39 freshmen were answered! On December 4, 2020, Fr. Chris Santangelo, SS.CC., pastor of Holy Name of Mary Parish in Laverne, CA, celebrated this Mass for this special class, their parents and teachers As Principal Rebecca Arteaga said to the students, “Dear Freshmen, today you will receive a rose pin, symbol of your budding young Christian womanhood. It is fitting that you receive this rose during the Advent season as we remember another young woman about your same age, Mary, who said “yes” to God and became the mother of Jesus.”

Pomona Catholic alumnae S Julianna Francis Marie Vagnozzi and Principal Rebecca Arteaga distributed rose pins to each Freshman. Mass was celebrated al fresco on the basketball court with the freshmen colors of lilac, pink and blue.

The stay at home order was given on Saturday, December 5. Thank you, Jesus and Your Blessed Mother Mary, for allowing this Mass to go forward!

Office Hours + Student Supports Student supports are always an important school structure, but this school year due to online learning and remote access, building student supports into the school day for every learner was essential. When planning this summer for the fall semester, with the hope of being back on campus sometime in October, Student Supports were structured as teacher “Office Hours” on Fridays.

As the months progressed and online learning continued, we realized we needed to pivot to meet the needs of our students struggling the most with the online learning platform. Returning from Christmas Break, the new bell schedule moved Student Supports from all day Friday to every afternoon Monday thru Thursday. This allows more access to teachers, more opportunities to make connections, and simply more unstructured time.

PC students have been amazing in keeping up with the academic demands this school year requires; in balancing academic, physical and mental health, our new bell schedule allows more time to take breaks, step away from the screen, enjoy some physical activity and rejuvenate.

While teachers will invite students identified as needing additional support to afternoon Office Hours, note that Office Hours are available and designed for ALL students and parents. These hours are so teachers are available during this time apart. We encourage students and parents to use these available Office Hours to continue to build relationships with teachers in support of meeting the needs of our students.

After a few years of dreaming, the courtyard project has begun. On January 20, the sound of jackhammers, front loaders and other large machines were heard in the Pomona Catholic courtyard.

Many layers of asphalt were broken up, scooped up, and hauled away. From the orange tree-framed east stairs into the building across to the small gate on the west side of the basketball courts south to the porch near the principal’s office, layers of blacktop are gone. Gone is the surface where the senior tables once stood. Gone is the blacktop upon which many a student ate lunch in the sunshine (or in my time where we played whiffle ball!) Gone is the area where the classes from the fifties and the class of 2020 graduated. The dirt that hasn’t seen the light of day since probably 1929 is experiencing a moment of freedom before construction begins.

Soon this area will sport artificial turf and decomposed granite, thanks to the generosity of Mission Green (Moises Barragan), Martinez Concrete (Art Martinez) , Purchase Green and the donations of many families, alumni and PC friends. Soon the courtyard will be lush and green, a peaceful place for a break between classes, and even a place for prayer before a big test, This is a gift to our present students and a legacy for the Pomona Catholic students of tomorrow.

The next phase of our courtyard will be a small amphitheater and shade trees.

Donations are always welcome!

CELEBRATE TRADITION

Junior Ring Day Mass

Traditions Continue During Pandemic at Pomona Catholic School. The pandemic has forced everyone to be flexible and creative.

That included Junior Ring Day and the annual Thanksgiving food drive.

Junior Ring Day Mass was held on the basketball court at Pomona Catholic School. Fr. Chris Santangelo, SS.CC., pastor of Holy Name of Mary Parish in LaVerne, CA, was the celebrant.

Students were allowed only one guest due to social distancing guidelines. The class officers brought up symbols of their class, named the Pathfinders, before the entrance procession to add to the ambience, including the mosaic the girls made during their Sophomore retreat as a sign of building the unity and sister hood that will carry them through for years.

Casino Night 2020, Casino Night 2020, the school’s annual and largest fundraiser of the year, was successfully held virtually.

KABC-7 morning meteorologist, Alumna Leslie Lopez ’01, served as mistress of ceremonies.

The three-hour event was packed with excitement, including S Julianna Francis Marie Vagnozzi pulling the winning tickets of the Fall Raffle, Bingo, silent auction and live auction. The evening’s Fund a Need raised $10,000.00 for the refurbishing of the courtyard. This will include removal of asphalt, installation of artificial turf and building of two prayer corners, one dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe and the second to St. Francis of Assisi, where students can pause and leave prayer petitions.

The green, inviting courtyard will be a more tranquil and inviting area for the students.

The Senior Thanksgiving prayer service The Senior Thanksgiving prayer service was held virtually on November 24, 2020. Class officers chose classmates to lead prayers, compose petitions and write reflections on scripture. Every class had a chance to participate by submitting those things for which they were thankful. These lists were read by a senior.

It was obvious that the Senior took great pride in their work and truly opened their hearts in composing their prayers. Seeds of Hope participants from 2018 and 2019 gave beautiful reflections on giving.

Getting ready for Advent Getting ready for Advent is always the last task before going home for the short break.

Senior Lilianna helped Sr. Julianna hang the Advent ribbons under the arms of the Risen Christ which welcomes everyone to Pomona Catholic.

Brownie’s Baskets The annual Thanksgiving Food Drive was renamed Brownie’s Baskets in honor of Miss Linda Brown who served as school receptionist for the past 28 years. Miss Brown retired on October 1, 2020. She always had food and water available for anyone who was without. The annual food drive was her special project, so it was appropriate to rename it in her honor. Campus Ministry members packed twenty bags from food donated by school families and alumni, with another 13 bags donated by our local State Senator. These bags were shared between St. Joseph and St. Madeleine parishes.

The remaining canned and boxed foods were given to the food pantry at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Claremont, CA.

Serving Beyond Education & Child Care Sister Julianna keeps the Felician spirit alive at the school where she found her voice and her vocation.

Sr. Julianna Francis Marie Vagnozzi is both a product of and an asset to Pomona Catholic School in Pomona, CA. As a 1974 graduate of Pomona Catholic, she knows first-hand the quality of the education students receive there, a valuable perspective that fuels her ministry in the development office as the coordinator of alumni outreach.

In 1948, when Rev. Thomas P. English decided to open a Catholic high school in Pomona, CA, he called on the Felician Sisters in Chicago, IL, to staff it. By 1957, the school was bursting at the seams with 750 students. The archdiocese opened a boys’ school to alleviate the overcrowding, and the last co-ed class graduated in 1962. In 2011, they brought boys back to campus with the opening of a co-ed middle school, and in 2019, the two schools merged as Pomona Catholic School.

Pomona Catholic serves a large geographic range and includes students from three counties, including Los Angeles, making it, in the words of Sr. Julianna, “a wonderful oasis. Word on the street is that Pomona Catholic is the safe place to be, especially for junior high boys.”

With 75% of students in need of financial assistance, Sr. Julianna is in tune with the needs of the students. She recalls discovering that two brothers who were frequently receiving demerits for being out of uniform were sharing a pair of dress shoes which are required for Mass.

The school reached out to their mother and found out that she had just moved her family off the streets and into transitional housing, but they were still struggling. Sr. Julianna connected the family with the Angela Spirituality Center, another Felician ministry in Pomona, as well as faculty, alumni, family members, friends and other donors, and provided them with shoes, food, clothing and Christmas gifts. The school’s efforts were recognized by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles-San Gabriel Region, which honored them with the 2019 Spirit of Caring Award. More importantly, the two boys are now attending the local Catholic boy’s high school and are thriving.

Pomona Catholic boasts a 100% graduation rate and a 100% college acceptance rate: 98% of those students attend college while recently a few graduates have joined the US Navy. One reason for this could be the supportive “family” environment, which Sr. Julianna credits with helping her find her own voice.

“I began my freshman year afraid to speak because of a stutter,” said Sr. Julianna. “The love and acceptance of the sisters helped me overcome that.” In finding her voice, she also found her vocation: “While rehearsing backstage in the auditorium in front of the window for the glee club’s spring showcase, I heard God’s call to be a Felician Sister That window is now my favorite place in the whole school!”

The obvious love Sr. Julianna has for Pomona Catholic is a true asset to her work in the development office. According to Navy Phay, director of development and institutional advancement, “Sr. Julianna has brought an infectious spirit. She revived our alumni program.

The outreach and events that she hosts remind alumni of the great impact of their investments in our school and our students.”

Funds are necessary to help support the nearly 75% of students who receive financial assistance. revived our alumni program. “We want to give a Pomona Catholic education to anyone who wants one.” said Sr. Julianna. “If they can’t afford tuition, we find a way.”

With a sincere belief in the transformative potential of a Pomona Catholic education, Sr. Julianna works tirelessly to ensure the legacy of her alma mater. “We want to give our students every chance to earn their diploma and move on to the next step,” said Sr. Julianna.

“We give our students the tools they need to go on to college, to become tomorrow’s leaders.

In some cases, they will be the first in their family to ever graduate from high school, to ever go to college. We help them to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness that they have known.”

Sr. Julianna certainly shines in her role at Pomona, saying, “Pomona Catholic is a beacon of light on the corner of Holt and White. We charge our students to bear the Light of Christ to all they meet. I am so very proud to be part of the legacy which is Pomona Catholic.”

Mount San Antonio College Dual Enrollment Partnership Over 20 high school students completed their first college course through our Dual Enrollment Partnership Program. In addition to receiving college credit for Introduction to American Politics and American Sign Language, students also received a full year of high school credit for successful completion of the course. Courses are UC and CSU approved.

Social and Emotional Learning:

Principle of Flight

The Counseling Department partnered with the House of Ruth to facilitate guidance for the freshmen class. In November, all 9th graders participated in a 6-week guidance workshop designed to educate, empower, and encourage students. The curriculum included activities covering self-care, communication skills. coping with anger and anxiety, depression, self-esteem and body image, healthy relationships, and stress management.

All 8th grade science students made an air glider to test Bernoulli’s Principle. Bernoulli’s principle is an idea of fluid dynamics. As speed of the fluid increases, pressure decreases.... A higher pressure pushes (accelerates) fluid toward lower pressure. So any change in a fluid’s speed must be matched by a change in pressure (force).

Sophomores will have the opportunity to participate in the program next month.

Students had to use at least two materials readily available in their home. Some materials used are tooth picks, wood, card board, tape, and hot glue.

Mr. Eggers will launch the gliders from the roof of Pomona Catholic. Prizes will be given to the first 3 students whose glider gains the most distance.

Chemical Models of Molecules Students in Human Physiology/Anatomy are making are making chemical models of different biologically relevant molecules. Mr. Edward Tomkins, science teacher and ASB moderator sent home science models to students. The concept of Structure/Function or Form/Function is integral to the biological sciences and the models allow them to explore the three-dimensionality of molecules.

The lesson calls for making: glucose (both linear and cyclic forms) and fructose, disaccharides by combining two monosaccharides, and amino acids.

Ms. Myrna Gomzalez The accomplishment of Semester 1 is our school had students attending class everyday, ready to learn in these new circumstances, always following and adapting to directions, sorting out challenges with smiles, sometimes working in difficult situations sharing the space at home with the rest of the family, and with tech problems. They were heroes!

Music

Mr. Miguel Martinez Since creating music together has been more difficult this year we have been learning how to produce our own unique sounds and music! Using Garage Band, our music class at PC has been learning new techniques to create music and learn some new skills. Stay tuned for this semester-long project where they will produce their own song and music video.

Speech + Debate Mr. Tom Vavra

The Pomona Catholic Speech and Debate Team has performed well during the 2020-2021 forensic season capturing many medals at the various speech and debate tournaments, which are virtual this academic year. Under the coaching of Head Coach Tom Vavra (1) and Assistant Coach Jaden Wood, Class of 2019 (2), the Pacers dominated the La Reina High School Speech Invitational in December.

The big sisters have inspired the little sisters of the Class of 2024 to strive for excellence bringing energy and enthusiasm to the speech program. Co-captains Brooklyn Rosa ‘22 (3) and Kailyn Wood ‘21(4) now prepare the speech team for the state qualifiers.

Those engaging in athletics will develop valuable skills to grow first as people, then as students, and finally as student athletes.

VISION STATEMENT: CREATE THE CULTURE The PC Athletic Department seeks to create a culture that inspires, motivates, and challenges all participants to leave their environment in a better place than how they found it.

MISSION STATEMENT: CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT The PC Athletic Department will work daily to create a professionally run performance environment that readies our student athletes to excel with their God given abilities. The lessons learned through athletics will supplement the areas Pomona Catholic values.

Parents and Student-Athletes, Since the outset of the pandemic, under the leadership of Archbishop Gomez, all Catholic institutions in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles have abided by local public health orders to ensure the health and safety of our constituents and to collectively contribute to reducing the spread of infection within the counties we serve. Sadly, this virus has lasted much longer than any of us could have anticipated. Recent announcements from CDPH and CIF regarding youth sports have been disappointing for our students, families, and staff. I know many have seen and heard a variety of stories on what is and is not allowed. I wanted to reach out to you personally to let you know that we are fighting for you to return in some capacity. It is important to remember that the Archdiocese expects all Catholic schools and employees to abide by local public health orders, which carry the weight of law, and to abide by the CDPH Youth Sports Guidelines.

So where does this leave PC? First, it has us positioned to come out of this like a cannon. With the enthusiasm and commitment of our coaches and student-athletes I am excited. Your dedication and persistence has given me strength to keep fighting for you. Our league administrators as well as athletic directors have been revising and strategically planning nonstop this year. I believe we have redone our schedules approximately 5 times to this point.

Even though CIF and State have cancelled all post season for season 1 sports we are trying to get a league schedule together in some capacity for volleyball and cross country. Season 2 sports are all in the red, orange or yellow category so we have to continue to be patient and ready.

I believe and am hopeful that the time will come during this year when you will have the opportunity to shine a bright light on that competitive spirit which is so much a part of your personality, skill and talent in your sport and in life. Let us continue to move forward in Christ and be hopeful that a healthier future awaits us in the near future. Thank you all for your kind words over the past few months and please know I am always here for the student-athletes in any capacity needed.

Physical conditioning, practice, skill building, and training that can be conducted outdoors, with 6-feet of physical distancing, and within stable team cohorts are currently authorized for all sports regardless of county tier status. Such activities may be conducted indoors consistent with the Gym & Fitness Center Guidance Capacity. In counties under the Regional Stay at Home Order, only activities consistent with the sentence above are permitted, regardless of the county’s tier status.

Competition between two teams will not be allowed in California until January 25, 2021, at the earliest. Once return to competition is allowed every participating school’s county must also be in the authorized tier status for the respective sport in order to compete.

On the lighter note, PC Volleyball team. Both Varsity and JV received their spirit packs including two new jerseys, spandex, kneepads, socks workout shirts and a few little extras for Varsity.

Inter-team competitions, meets, races, or similar events are authorized only if (a) both teams are located in the same county and the sport is authorized in the Table [at the bottom of the CDPH Youth Sports Guidelines]; or (b) teams are located in immediately bordering counties and the sport is authorized in both counties in the Table below.

+ Any tournaments or events that involve more than two teams are not currently permitted in California. +

State public health guidance on youth sports states that “Athletes and coaches should cohort by team, and refrain from participating with more than one team over the same season or time period.” As a result of this guidance, CIF has reinstated CIF By-Laws 600-605, which were temporarily suspended for the 2020-2021 school year only.

In fact, our budget is favorable by 1.47% as of December 31st 2020. Meeting a budget is not easy, it requires sacrifices, creative thinking and versatile staff members committed with one goal in mind: education. It also requires us to trust in the Lord as the mission we have at hand is honorable. Our PC family is faithful.

As we continue with our financial stewardship, you can see from the pie charts that we strive for excellence with all the energy we have in us even when our staff has been reduced. The current pandemic demonstrates we have to look for ways to put money aside for the difficult years and proves we have to strive to provide the best education by jumping every obstacle that comes our way. Our PC family provides support.

Although the current business environment is tough, we want to thank you for trusting the life of your children to us. Thank you for paying your tuition on time. Mr. Huerta served the St. Mary’s in Fullerton community for the past 11 years as the Business Manager.

He has experience in endowments and capital campaigns. Mr. Huerta received his BA in Business Administration from Cal State Fullerton and will complete the Professional in Human Resources certification next spring.

This program is open to all parents or legal guardians enrolled at Pomona Catholic School Tuition credit will be given for referring new students to the school. To qualify for the incentive, referred students cannot have a sibling currently or previously enrolled at Pomona Catholic, and the student cannot already be included in the Pomona Catholic School Prospective Student Database.

The referring family must initiate the referral by filling out the information below.

New student must be enrolled and in good standing for two months to be considered aa successful referral.

A 1 month tuition credit will be added to the tuition account of the referring family on the third month of enrollment for the new student. Account must be current.

Families who paid their tuition in full will receive an incentive check equal to the amount of the New Student Referral credit.

*The New Student Referral Program is subject to review and modification. Interpretation of program parameters will be at the discretion of the Principal.
