The Healing Power of Positive Thinking and Gratitude Thinking In these days of distressing news and information about COVID-19; in this time of altering the way we live, limitations on the way we gather to pray, to dine, to be present to one another, it is so easy to fall into a sad, less positive mode of thinking. We encourage you that another way of keeping yourself well and also of helping yourself heal if you are ill in some way, is to think positively and to think with thankfulness and gratitude. + Compliment others as much as you can. + Find ways to say thanks to others, to affirm them, to recognize their gifts. + Make phone calls, send emails, text message, send cards/notes to others with words of praise, positive thoughts, promises of prayer for people on comfort, palliative or hospice care. + Call shut ins you know to let them know of your prayer, your positive thoughts. + Research the internet for words/ phrases/written materials that support positive thinking and self-affirmation. + Before you go to bed, write or reflect on a list of three to ten things you have to be thankful for in that day. + Find humor in your day; find ways to laugh; connect with others to share humorous events. + Reminisce electronically with family and long time friends, via phone, via Zoom, about your childhood days, how you got into trouble together and survived together + Think positive, thank positive, act positive, pray positive. + Know and remember that you are embraced, are loved, are surrounded inside and out, by a loving God who just cherishes you in each and every moment. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Pomona Catholic Families, Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! We ended the last school year with online learning and drive through graduations. Our high school graduates accomplished an impressive list of college acceptances, including all University of California schools, elite private liberal arts colleges, and a variety of out of state schools. For our middle school students, we welcome a number of our 8th grade girls to PC’s freshman class. We also sent a number of students to other competitive high schools, such as The Webb Schools, Damien High School and Bishop Amat. Although the school year did not end as we had planned, there was much to celebrate—and we found socially distant ways of doing so! The theme for our year is “Here I am, Lord!” For me, this song brings back comforting memories from my childhood and years singing in the PC choir. “Here I Am, Lord” recalls immediately Isaiah 6:8: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’” Given the challenges and improbability of what we are all experiencing, I am proud to stand with each of you in answering God’s call to fulfill the mission of Pomona Catholic for our families. This year will look like no other I have experienced since I began working at PC in 1999. I shared with administrators that I feel we are creating an entirely new school program! Much of what we will do in the first semester will look different, with some opportunities and even some experimentation. Our goal is to keep our students learning, whether they are on campus or online—keeping the same rigor and professionalism Pomona Catholic is known for.
‘“And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ Given the challenges and improbability of what we are all experiencing, I am proud to stand with each of you in answering God’s call to fulfill the mission of Pomona Catholic for our families.”
Welcome to Pomona Catholic Vice Principal Allison Essman (1) completed her first month on our campus. She has tremendous experience as an administrator in the Los Angeles Archdiocese, having served has principal at Our Lady of Good Council in Los Feliz. Ms. Essman is working with Department Chairs and faculty on curriculum and instruction, serves as the Dean of Students in the HS and is a member of the administrative team. Athletic Director Daniel Threadgill (2) jumped right in and began work on our athletic program. Mr. Threadgill joins us from our brother school, Damien High School, where he served as a member of the Advancement Team. He is no stranger to our PC community. Last year he volunteered as our middle school boys’ basketball coach, where he led them to the playoffs for the first time. In addition to athletics, Mr. Threadgill will also teach math and serve as the Dean of students in the middle school.
Welcome to PC

Faith Edaburn, (3) who began as a front office aid and assistant in admissions, has joined the newly formed marketing and admissions department. Mrs. Edaburn will continue working with our prospective families as the Marketing and Admissions Coordinator. Joseph Eggers (4) joins us as a permanent member of the faculty. He will continue teaching in the science department, serve as a member of the marketing and admissions team, and take over the technology needs of the school. Mr. Eggers has been instrumental in helping prepare our campus for concurrent teaching. Alex Rivera (5) began as our new Facilities Manager just as we were all being sent home mid-March. He spent the last 5 months working on improvements to the campus. He is a critical piece in making it possible for all of us to be present on campus as we navigate the guidelines needed for a safe return.

Opening the 2020-2021 School Year Together with teachers and parents, we created a bell schedule modified to accommodate instruction plans for PC SMART online learning and on-campus students (when allowed). Direct instruction is taking place Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Fridays are utilized for office hours, small group tutoring, department meetings, grade-level meetings, student-teacher conferences, parent-teacher conferences, and connecting with at-home learners.
“We are grateful for the additional funding gifted to our school. We remain committed to keeping a Pomona Catholic education attainable for all who seek it.”
With the start of school underway, we have been able to welcome students to campus on Fridays. Middle School students were welcomed by their teachers for STAR testing and for some precious time bonding and working on a creative project. We plan on hosting prayer services, picture day, small group activities and so much more! Pomona Catholic’s commitment to educating the whole student goes beyond academics. Creating opportunities for our students to nourish their spiritual journeys and connect with classmates remain a top priority for all of us. We continue to strive to reinvent and redesign student life so all of our students can remain united, even from their homes. With the plans to return to campus soon, Pomona Catholic has completed a great number of upgrades to our facility. All classrooms are set up ready to receive students. We have purchased protective shields, sanitization supplies and PC green signage that will help students navigate campus safely. In addition to health and safety plans, our science labs have been remodeled thanks to a generous gift from the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation. The biology and chemistry labs have been completely rebuilt with the latest equipment and technology. We are also proud to announce we have added a Maker’s lab on the STEM wing of campus. Plans for Robotics and opportunities for students to create, build and design are all aspects of this new lab. (See page __ for more)
Our Families—Our PC Community Pomona Catholic families have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 shutdown. Many small business owners have been forced to close or lay off employees, some of our parents have lost jobs and continue to struggle with finding stable employment. With generous gifts from alumni and the Dan Murphy foundation, we have been able to keep these families in the PC community. For many, the cost of a private Catholic education is simply not affordable as they must prioritize costs of health care, shelter and food for their families. We are grateful for the additional funding gifted to our school. We remain committed to keeping a Pomona Catholic education attainable for all who seek it. Thank you to all who continue to help provide us with the resources needed to continue to serve families and live out the mission of our school.
“Here I am, Lord...I will go, if you lead me.”

PACE SETTER NEWS + EVENTS Pomona Catholic Alumnae Sisters Donate to School in Honor of Their Grandfathers Two new scholarships have been established by the Tomkins family. Sisters Kaelyn and Erin Tomkins are alumnae of Pomona Catholic (class 2014 and 2017), and the award honors their grandfathers. The scholarships were established to acknowledge academic excellence and will be distributed annually to graduating seniors.
Jaylynn Velhagen-Dizon received the James Tomkins Memorial Award. Jaylynn will be attending UC Davis and majoring in clinical nutrition.
The James Tomkins Memorial Award for Academic Excellence is given to the student with the highest grade point average. This award honors James Tomkins, a first generation Irish Catholic immigrant and father of four. Although Jim didn’t go beyond high school, he placed great value on education and instilled in his children both the love for learning and the importance of getting a college education. Jim’s early passing didn’t allow him to see his children graduate from college or how his high standard for excellence in education has passed from his children to theirs. The Wayne Hager, Professor Emeritus, Award for Excellence goes to the student with the second highest grade point average. This award honors Wayne Hager, the father of three daughters and a retired professor of engineering at Penn State. Wayne left a promising career at DuPont as a chemical engineer to move his family across the country to get his doctorate in engineering at the University of Idaho, where he later became a professor. In the 1970s, Wayne led the group of women engineers at the University of Idaho, recognizing the importance of women in STEM. He instilled the love of learning in each of his daughters and the importance of academic excellence. A gifted teacher, Wayne could take the complex and make it easily understandable.
Amanda Aguirre received the Wayne Hager, Professor Emeritus, Award for Excellence. Amanda will attend Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, CA She will be majoring in theology.
Thank you, Kaelyn and Erin Tomkins!

Pomona Catholic School Holds Two Graduations During Quarantine Like the rest of the 4th quarter, everyone had to be creative during both graduations for the Class of 2020. A total of 44 eighth graders and 58 Seniors received diplomas during unique graduation ceremonies. The Baccalaureate Mass for the high school was broadcast from St. Joseph Church, Pomona, on May 20. Fr. Steven Guitron, pastor, was celebrant at the Mass. The five candidates for Valedictorian and Salutatorian served as readers, cantor and petitioners. Jaylynn Velhagen-Dizon gave the Salutatorian address at the beginning of Mass. Graduates were restricted to two vehicles carrying their parents, siblings and a few family members due to quarantine and social distancing guidelines. Only the graduate and two adults were permitted to exit the car while the others watched from their vehicles. Faculty and staff lined the courtyard and celebrated each graduate. On May 29, eighth graders came to the courtyard at PC with their families at their assigned time. The graduate walked to the middle of the covered walkway which had been decorated with dark green hangings and giant CLASS OF 2020 letters They stayed there as their name and accomplishments were read before proceeding down the ramp to receive their diploma from Principal Rebecca Arteaga , class of 1992. God bless the class of 2020! After taking pictures with parents and administration members, the student and family returned to their cars and drove away to make room for the next graduate. The same procedure was followed by the Seniors on June 5. Families prepared large posters to hang on the fence in the parking lot. These offered another opportunity to take photographs. Both ceremonies were photographed and videotaped so that the students could share their special day with their loved ones who were not able to attended due to social distancing and quarantine. Some of the usual parts of Commencement exercises were pre-recorded and included on video and online. Honors convocation for the high school was held on May 16. Many, many recognitions, awards and scholarships were distributed and the valedictorian and salutatorian were announced. The Valedictorian speech was given by Amanda Aguirre. Amanda also addressed the honors awards on-line assembly to the middle school and high school students on June 4. The graduation speaker was Lieutenant Colonel Sharon Tweedy Cortney. Sharon graduated as the salutatorian from Pomona Catholic in 1998. She then attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she studied Business Management and was commissioned into the United States Air Force via the Reserve Officer Training Corps Program. Throughout her career as an Air Force Pilot, Sharon has logged over 3,400 total hours, with 940 instructor hours and 600 combat hours. Since graduation was not held in church, the seniors were allowed to decorate their graduation caps which they did very tastefully.
We are PC Strong! In the spring newsletter, we announced #PCStrong, an online fundraising campaign to give and unite for the sake of our vulnerable students as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Thank you for your amazing generosity, especially during the May Giving Tuesday event! We are also grateful to the Daniel Murphy Foundation. Their first donation helped struggling families finish the year with a clean slate. Their second donation will help us to purchase PPE supplies and other things PC needs to open the new school year strong. Together, we continue to educate and nurture those impacted by the global pandemic. Our hope is that this continued mobilization will demonstrate the power of generosity to heal a frightened world. Donations are always welcome. To join us, go to: https://pomonacatholicschool.factsmgtadmin.com/give/

A Holy Opening to the School Year On August 24, Pomona Catholic School opened the 2020-2021 school year by participating in the livestreamed parish Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Claremont. Madison Kelly, the Apostolic Commissioner at Pomona Catholic School, served as lector and petitioner. Madison said in her greeting, “Principal Rebecca Arteaga and I are very grateful to Father Charles Ramirez for allowing us to participate in this Mass as we ask blessings of the Holy Spirit on our new school year. Sr. Julianna Francis Marie Vagnozzi, CSSF received the Blessed Sacrament, which had been removed from the school chapel during the shutdown, and returned our Eucharistic Lord to the tabernacle which had been beautifully refurbished during the summer by an anonymous donor.
Pomona Catholic School Responds to Novel COVID-19 with Distance Learning and Virtural Prayer Services The announcement from the Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles came during lunch time on March 13, 2020. Already warned in January that school closures was a strong possibility, Pomona Catholic faculty implemented their distance learning plans. All students were ininformed during an assembly of what was expected of them until the school was re-opened. They were sent home with all of their textbooks for the duration of distance learning. Students who did not have a laptop, tablet, iPad or smart phone were issued devices so that they could keep up with their studies. Students were told that their classes online would follow the typical school schedule. Discussion groups were help on Google Classroom and Zoom. Teachers kept their regular office hours to answer questions from their students and parents. But something was missing. There was a hunger for a time to pray together. Campus Ministry held its first prayer service via Zoom on the evening of March 25. All students, faculty, staff, family, alumni and friends were invited to participate. The high school Campus Ministry leaders held a beautiful prayer service which included Scripture, the Rosary, a litany and other prayers. People were invited to send in their prayer intentions and these were announced between the decades. Participants texted their appreciation for the time to pray together and commended the lovely job the young ladies did.

Others services were held, including Stations of the Cross led by Middle School, May Crowning held by 8th Grade, and Baccalaureate Mass from St. Joseph Church led by the seniors. The new school year was blessed by the Call to Tradition Mass streamed from Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Claremont, thanks to the generosity of Pastor Fr. Charles Ramirez.
BEYOND SCHOLARSHIP
Starting the School Year SMART
Safe, Motivated, Adaptive, Remote, Tenacious No one could have imagined what learning could look like when we went into quarantine last March. Our teachers and students have embraced remote learning gracefully! Teachers have had to re-work their lessons so that they can reach each student from a distance. Pomona Catholic is here to support you in your journey. Please reach out if there is any support needed.

Finally! A New STEM Wing for Pomona Catholic School
>
When students return to campus, they will be amazed to find that all of the SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING and MATHEMATICS classrooms are now grouped together on the first floor. This was accomplished through a generous donation by the Carrie Estelle Doheny Foundation as well as other donations from families and alumni that were restricted for use on this project. The biology lab was moved from upstairs to the old computer lab last March and the Speech room next door was changed to the Maker’s Lab. Both rooms were stripped down to the bare walls and were rewired to accommodate these room’s needs. New Smart boards, cabinets, sinks, emergency eyewash station and counters were installed. Construction was completed by Mr. Miguel Guardian’s company, MCSM Inc. Mr. Guardian is the father of Samantha ’20 and Melissa ’23. Work began on the chemistry classroom and lab during the summer. The classroom retained its stadium seating, while the lab was also stripped to the walls. The old pass through chalkboards were replaced with a solid wall so that new cabinetry could be installed in the lab. We’re patiently waiting for the delivery of 8 octagonal lab tables which are outfitted with a sink, gas access, and storage for lab equipment. The six rooms which comprise the STEM wing have all been painted bright green to show represent cross innovation and cross curricular connections.

A Word from our ASB President As we continue to settle into this school year, I would like to introduce myself to the new families and students in our Pomona Catholic community.
PRESIDENT GRACIE HONORÉ
VICE PRESIDENT TIFFANY ALVARE
My name is Gracie Honoré and I am the ASB Executive President. Throughout my time at Pomona Catholic, I have met some of the most kind-hearted people and formed meaningful relationships with the students, teachers, and staff. I am grateful for the friendships I have made. I will truly cherish my PC memories even after I graduate. Many of my fondest memories are those that I made while on ASB. The best time I’ve had so far was planning and working our first dance each school year, which is the Stop Light Social. This year, the ASB officers are working hard to improve student life during these times. We collaborate and come up with creative ways to keep our classmates engaged and excited throughout this year. Our first ASB sponsored-event is our Virtual Spirit Week scheduled for the week of September 28th- October 1st. We are challenging the student body to embrace each day’s theme by coordinating their Zoom backgrounds and attire to match the theme of each day. Whether it’s their favorite movie, pajamas, vacation, or Disney theme, we can hardly wait to see their PC pride. I enjoy seeing the smiles on Zoom, the photos and Instagram, the dances on TikTok and the conversations on twitter. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone in person. Until then, be safe!

National Merit Scholarship commends Abigail Carrillo in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program Abigail Carrillo has been named a Commended Student in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to Abby acknowledging her scholastic achievement as a talented senior. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2021 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). “Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.
“Leave the saving of the world to the men? I don’t think so” —Elastigirl in the Incredibles
Abigail is one of three Carrillo sisters who attended Pomona Catholic. She has a bright future ahead of her. My favorite subjects are math and science, since they are closely related and I’ve always had great teachers for both. Mr. Wallace (1) has always made math a fun and interesting subject, especially with his random outbursts of 70s and 80s songs, and Mr. Tomkins (2) and Mr. Bell (3) keep science entertaining with jokes and lively discussions. My most challenging subject is probably English. Most subjects are based in facts and have definite answers, while English is a more creative and subjective area of learning. I do enjoy writing and reading, though, especially all the classics Ms. Stith (4) has us read. My favorite PC memory was getting to hang with my sister and friends everyday. Relaxing in the ELC after school with them was always the best way to end the school day. This year I want to make as many memories with my friends and family as possible. I’ll probably be leaving next year for college, and despite the social constraints the pandemic has caused for all of us, I want to spend as much time with them as possible.

As for my collge plans, I will be applying to some east and west coast schools, hoping to major in mechanical engineering or architecture. No one knows what the future holds, especially right now, but I hope by fall next year I will be able to attend one of my dream colleges on-campus. My favorite quote is “Leave the saving of the world to the men? I don’t think so.” from Elastigirl in The Incredibles

Congratulations to Mr. McKay! Pomona Catholic Alumni Coming Home 2020.
ALUMNI OUTREACH
Attendees had a fabulous time at Alumni Coming Home 2020. Alumni took time to catch up with classmates, plan for upcoming reunions, take tours, share a meal and win a prize. They saw the new benches and plants in the courtyard purchased with funds donated during Giving Tuesday 2019. Most importantly, we saluted an amazing man from the class of 1955. Mike McKay was honored for his many years of volunteering in the Finance Department. Many of Mike’s family, friends and classmates came to celebrate him. Principal Rebecca Arteaga (Class of 1992) announced the establishment of the Michael Brian McKay Scholarship in honor of this generous and gifted man. Attendees were invited to play the Wall o’ Cash envelope game in order to fund this new scholarship as well as the annual Legacy Scholarship. The Legacy Scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming freshman who had a parent or grandparent graduate from Pomona Catholic. Envelopes served as raffle tickets for great door prizes. The game raised the goal of $1,000 for the Legacy Scholarship and (as of 2/4/2020) $8,652.58 for the Michael B. McKay Scholarship! Donations are still being accepted. Send them to the Development office and mark them “McKay Scholarship.” Pomona Catholic School would not be where it is at, 121 years into its history, without the people who have come before to give their time, talent, treasure and prayerful support. MICHAEL BRIAN MCKAY PCHS CLASS OF 1955
Legacy Families at Graduation For both graduations this year, the ramp from the portico at the south end of the courtyard served as the perfect place for Legacy moms to meet their graduate and walk them down to receive their diplomas.

We have a long and rich history dating back to 1898! Our students go onto colleges locally and across the country. Whatever your goals, we can help you get there! This year, our mission remains the same. We are here to guide you every step of the way throughout the admissions process. We will host virtual and in person school tours for parents and students. Virtual preview days are offered to students. All events have been planned with safety being our first priority.
