CHSA members excelled in 2023

Manufacturing members achieved over 92% compliance, and 99.8% of product stocked by CHSA distributors met CHSA standards

Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) members achieved high levels of compliance to the relevant Accreditation Scheme standard in 2023. The exceptional compliance offers buyers and users of cleaning and hygiene products the guarantee they need: ‘what’s on the box is what’s in the box’. “We offer buyers of cleaning and hygiene products an important guarantee,” explained Lorcan Mekitarian, Chair of the CHSA. “They can trust our logo. It means the label accurately reflects the content and the product is as specified. “Every member has also signed our code of practice, which contains the Competition and Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code. This means if you buy from a CHSA member you can be certain there will be no greenwashing. “The integrity of our logo is attractive to the unscrupulous. We are aware some falsely claim CHSA Accreditation. We challenge this everywhere we see it but our advice to buyers who are uncertain about the legitimacy of the manufacturer’s or distributor’s claim, is to check our website. It carries a full list of members. If they are not listed on our website, they are not Accredited by the CHSA.” The CHSA operates six Accreditation Schemes. They are for manufacturers of paper-based products, plastic-based products, cotton-based products, and cleaning chemicals, for general manufacturers and for distributors of cleaning and hygiene 4

products. Across all six Accreditation Schemes the Independent Inspector conducted more than 142 individual audits in 2023. His audits of manufacturing members involved checking 1,848 labels, 559 product lines and 4,280 individual products. Members of the Accreditation Scheme for manufacturers of cotton mops achieved 98% compliance, members of the Scheme for manufacturers of plastic sacks achieved 92% and members of the soft tissue Accreditation Scheme achieved 94% compliance. All members of the Scheme for manufacturers of cleaning chemicals maintained full compliance. The audits of distributor members involved reviewing 46,325 product lines. CHSA Accredited Distributors must source products from CHSA Accredited manufacturers or, if from alternative manufacturers the product must conform to the relevant CHSA Accreditation Scheme. The product lines reviewed included the sampling of 62 non-accredited products. The Inspector established 58% of suppliers to CHSA Accredited Distributors were CHSA Accredited Manufacturers, supplying approximately 80% of all products stocked. Furthermore, 99.8% of all products stocked met CHSA standards. The Independent Inspector audits members twice a year where possible. He checks the labels contain the required information and that the product is as stated on the label. Depending on the product, this involves checking the sheet count, width, duty, weight and or performance of the product. He also assesses the

member’s quality assurance procedures. For distributors he confirms if product is from a CHSA Accredited Manufacturer and where it is not, that it conforms to the specification of the relevant scheme. Every CHSA member has signed the CHSA’s rigorous Code of Practice. It requires them to “maintain a high standard in the conduct of its business”. The CHSA has integrated the Competition & Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code into its Code of Practice. It requires environmental claims to be truthful and accurate, clear and unambiguous, consider the full life cycle of the product or service, be substantiated and must not hide important or relevant information. Also, comparisons must be fair and meaningful. The combination of the Code of Practice and Accreditation Scheme membership means every member: • Trades ethically and sustainably; • Provides quality, fit for purpose products; and • Makes sure what’s on the box is what’s in the box. Committed to the integrity of the Schemes, the CHSA’s governing Council will expel any Scheme member who, despite being offered the guidance required to correct issues, consistently fails to conform to the relevant Scheme Standard. @CHSACleaning www.CHSA.co.uk Building & Facilities Management

Installers optimistic about 2024 Professional installers have a positive outlook on the market for automation projects in the year ahead, according to the latest customer survey by BFT Automation. The survey of installers found that 81% believed the market for new installations is still growing, with 63% of responders reporting that the automation element of their business was either ‘busy’ or ‘very busy’ in 2023. BFT is a leading manufacturer of automation technology that controls access for people and vehicles in a range of

environments. The company surveyed installers who fit BFT products, including swing and sliding gate operators, automatic barriers and security bollards. “Despite the ongoing impact of the cost-of-living crisis, installers continue to experience a strong demand for their services. This latest sign of optimism is testament to the ongoing need for automation solutions – whether that’s in a commercial, public or residential setting,” said Matthew Batson, Sales Operations Director at BFT.

“While the need for home security solutions such as automated gates was particularly strong during the pandemic, there remains a demand for solutions that provide added security for the home, while the upcoming Protect Duty legislation is likely to drive further requirement for options such as security bollards in publicly accessible venues.” BFT Automation is part of the Somfy group. P-Wave extends NHS cancer warnings for men campaign to stadiums and large venues “To support this important NHS initiative, we need to deliver this potentially lifesaving message to as many men as possible, so we have rebranded our popular fragranced Trough urinal screens, which are commonly used in high-traffic areas such as sports stadiums and other large venues.” As part of a major drive to catch cancers earlier when they are easier to treat, P-Wave has partnered with the NHS on a cancer awareness campaign to encourage men to consult their GPs if they saw blood in their urine. Thousands of P-Wave urinal mats now feature the message “Blood in your pee? Contact your GP practice” putting this important message in front of people using public urinals in pubs, restaurants, shops, and hotels across the country. Now the campaign is expanding to feature NHS messaging on urinal trough screens in stadiums and large venues, meaning even more people could benefit from the campaign. “To support this important NHS initiative, we need to deliver this potentially life-saving message to as many men as possible, so we have rebranded our popular fragranced Trough urinal screens, which are commonly used in high-traffic areas such as sports stadiums and other large venues,” says P-Wave Managing Director Dave Carson. “We are proud to be working with NHS England on this firstof-its-kind partnership, which offers a creative yet simple way to convey this important cancer awareness message. We hope that seeing the message in urinals in major venues will prompt a serious conversation, encouraging men to be body aware and check for blood in their pee and to contact their GP practice if they spot it.” 8

News

Passing blood in pee – even just once – is a common symptom for bladder, kidney or prostate cancers, which are all among the ten most prevalent cancers in the country, and generally affect men more than women. A recent survey for the NHS found that nearly half of men (46%) thought blood in pee was not a symptom of cancer. And two-fifths (39%) of men surveyed said they would wait until they’ve noticed blood in their pee multiple times before seeing a GP. The new findings also show that just over half of men in England use a public urinal at least once a week and the majority of men (71%) said they would be more likely to contact their GP practice if they saw messaging on a urinal mat and were experiencing blood in their pee. “It is interesting that the survey also showed that more than 3 out of 5 men (64%) would think a venue is concerned about cleanliness, health and/or wellness if they saw a urinal screen in a public washroom,” says Dave Carson. Data shows that more people than ever before are being seen and treated by the NHS for cancer. In the last year the number of people receiving lifesaving checks for cancer hit nearly three million (2.92m) – more than any other year on record. Diagnosing cancer early means it is easier to treat and can save lives, which is why the NHS is urging people to be aware of changes in their bodies and contact their GP practice if they notice symptoms that could be a sign of cancer.     Professor Peter Johnson, NHS England National Clinical Director for Cancer, said: “Having blood in your pee – even just once – shouldn’t be ignored because it can be a sign of cancer, so it needs to be

checked out by your GP team. “Cancer survival is at an alltime high, and we’re seeing more cancers than ever before being picked up at an early stage – and this partnership with P-Wave is just one of the many ways we are helping people to be aware of possible cancer symptoms. “While this initiative is about helping men to spot the signs of cancer, everyone needs to be more aware – please look for any changes that may be unusual for you – and get checked out early, it could save your life.” According to new analysis from NHS England, almost three million people were seen for an urgent cancer check over the last 12 months, and the number being tested has increased by more than a quarter compared with the same period before the pandemic. Odour control and splash reduction in trough urinals P-Wave® Trough Urinal Screens represent a game changer in trough urinal maintenance, delivering an unprecedented level of odour control and splash reduction, while helping to eradicate persistent blockages, channel blocks, and unwanted odours. 100% recyclable, the easy to install screens can be linked to span the urinal’s entire length and are the perfect solution for high-traffic areas such as stadiums and concert venues, ensuring a pleasant and hygienic environment regardless of the crowd size.   For more information about cancer symptoms, visit nhs.uk/cancersymptoms, www.p-wave.co.uk/nhs Building & Facilities Management

Union Industries improves efficiency with double Eiger Door installation at Taj Foods Union Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer of bespoke industrial doors, has helped food importer and distributer, Taj Foods, improve efficiency through the installation of high-speed freezer doors – the Eiger Door. Taj Foods, specialists in frozen exotic food and prepared meals, was established in 1980 and recently expanded its cold storage at its Sheffield warehouse to meet growing demand. The project undertaken by EJM refrigeration, involved improving its energy efficiency and carbon footprint with the installation of a new CO2 refrigeration system. The two Eiger Doors will enhance operational efficiency in the high-demand environment and will maintain consistent freezer temperatures, while ensuring unimpeded access to cold stores. Since its launch in 2002, the Eiger Door has been installed as a fast-access traffic door at major food retailers, 3PL cold storage and distribution, and frozen food manufacturers across the UK. The Eiger Door ensures that consistent temperatures can be maintained and features an innovative dehumidification system, which prevents snow

14

and ice build-up on the door blade and frame. This feature tackles a consistent issue plaguing other door types, as the freezer encounters humid ambient air entering the cold store. Minimising downtime is also supported by the Eiger Door’s robust construction and its tried and tested crash-out and reset system. Due to the modest difference in size between Forklift Trucks and the door opening, as well as the busy nature of this freezer, this is of particular benefit at this depot when considering the longterm reliability of the Eiger Door. Rob Howe, Union Industries’ Technical Sales Engineer, said: “The installation of the Eiger Doors at Taj Foods showcases our commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions that prioritise efficiency and reliability. “Over the past 20 years, the Eiger Door has consistently proven to be a superior

and effective innovation for cold storage access, overcoming challenges such as ice build-up and excessive energy use to maintain consistent temperatures. “We are confident that the Eiger Door will significantly contribute to Taj Foods’ operational success.” Anil Solanki, managing director at Taj Foods, said: “We were looking for a reliable door solution to fit in with the redevelopment of our Sheffield warehouse, and after reading about the success of the Eiger Door we approached Union Industries to assist us to improve operational efficiency as we doubled our capacity. “We believe that the advanced features of the Eiger Door will not only enhance the efficiency of our cold storage but also contribute to long-term reliability, minimising disruptions in our day-to-day operations.” Building & Facilities Management

New JELD-WEN whitepaper highlights social housing security concerns The UK’s leading door manufacturer, JELD-WEN, has published a new whitepaper that calls for dual certification of doorsets to become a legal requirement within all multioccupancy developments. The whitepaper, titled “Turning the Key Towards Better Security” has been published in partnership with Secured by Design (SBD), the official UK police initiative that helps to deter and reduce crime, to explore the critical role that secure front entrance doorset design can play in helping to keep multi-occupancy properties secure and prevent burglars from breaking in. It sets out the purpose and effectiveness of secure doorset design, assesses current regulations and accreditation within the industry, and considers the wider factors impacting levels of crime, such as costof-living, neighbourhood deprivation and technology. Contents of the whitepaper also address research1 conducted by JELD-WEN, which explored how secure those living within social housing felt within their homes. It found that tenants believe the level of security offered by their landlord falls short, with a quarter (23%) of those living in multi-occupancy properties having experienced a security breach over the last 12 months (rising to 35% in London). Almost half of all respondents believed that crime was increasing in their area, and a quarter (24%) felt that their front door wasn’t secure. This has led to many residents taking matters into their own hands, as 47% have purchased additional home security devices, such as CCTV, recording doorbells and security lights. Despite the government’s commitment to ensuring landlords engage with their tenants and help to make sure they feel safe and secure in their home, two thirds (66%) of social housing tenants reported that they had never received communications Building & Facilities Management

from their landlord about ways they can achieve better security in their building. Unsurprisingly then, almost a third (32%) of respondents admitted to leaving their front door unlocked overnight, and 57% said they would leave it unlocked during the day – even though this is the most common timeframe of opportunity for thieves. Commenting on the whitepaper, Glyn Hauser, R&D Senior Group Manager at JELD-WEN, said: “It is worrying that a third of social housing tenants (33%) do not feel adequately protected from the risk of a break-in, particularly as the ongoing cost of living crisis presents a potential surge in crime over winter. “We’re also concerned that many break-ins can be attributed to entrance doors that have been left open, which is a clear indication that there is a huge awareness task in terms of educating residents about how they can improve the security of their home.” The research found that an overwhelming majority of residents asserted that security from break-ins (80%) and fire protection (48%) are the most important functions of a front door, which JELD-WEN believes supports the growing case for dual-certification as standard practice. Glyn continues: “Ultimately, a secure entrance doorset is one of the most effective ways of deterring and preventing a burglar breaking in, but only when it is installed and maintained correctly. However, there is still no legal requirement for this critical security product to be installed by a person with any professional qualification, or reviewed and maintained in the same way that Fire Safety (England) Regulations require. “As such, and in response to our research findings, we believe the opportunity to apply dual-certification, which is already a SBD stipulation, could

help build better traceability, accountability and trust throughout a door’s lifecycle. “It is our hope that this whitepaper, along with its recommendations, proves a valuable resource and helps to inspire some of the progressive action needed to raise security standards.” Jon Cole, Chief Operating Officer at Police CPI, who own and administer the Secured by Design (SBD) initiative, commented: “Turning the Key Towards Better Security is an important whitepaper, which investigates how to elevate standards for door security across the board. “Naturally, this aligns with the work that SBD has done and continues to deliver to improve the security of buildings and their immediate surroundings to provide safe places to live, work, shop and visit. “The consistently high reductions in burglary rates and anti-social behaviour which SBD developments and properties have seen over the years is based on the use of certificated products, rather than those that are just tested to the relevant standard. This highlights the importance of doorset manufacturers like JELDWEN, who are investing in the future to ensure safe and secure buildings that promote cohesive and sustainable communities for generations to come.” ‘Turning the Key Towards Better Security’ is now available for free to download at https:// www.jeld-wen.co.uk/contact/ security-white-paper. 15

PODCAST: How to control static by contolling humidity

Condair has released a new podcast about how manufacturers and commercial businesses can avoid static issues impacting their productivity by proactively managing their indoor humidity. In this short interview with Business Net Explorer, Dave Marshall-George, Sales Director at Condair, explains why static build-up occurs at low humidity, the issues it can cause in industrial and commercial situations, and how best to control it through humidification of the indoor environment. Dave comments, “Electrostatic build-up is much more prevalent as indoor relative humidity drops. This means it can be seasonal issue for manufacturers.

16

HVAC

Indoor humidity is lowest in the winter, so manufacturers can experience increased problems of materials sticking together, being repelled by each other, or even sparks resulting from electrostatic discharge, during the colder months. A very effective way of dealing with this is to raise the indoor humidity to around 45%RH. “Studies have shown that at higher levels of indoor humidity, the static charge caused by activities, such as walking across synthetic carpets, can be reduced by as much as 95-98%. This short podcast explains why and how manufacturers and facility managers can use humidity control as an effective anti-static measure.” The podcast is available

all major podcast channels, including Soundcloud, Spotify and Google Podcast by searching for “Condair” and also on the Condair website at www.condair.co.uk/podcast. The Condair Group is the world’s leading specialist in humidity control and evaporative cooling, with energy efficient, hygienic and innovative technologies for commercial, industrial and heritage applications. Creating an efficient Heat Network with POD HIUs and Imax Xtra 2

Hatcham Road is a new development located in London’s Bermondsey, SE15, incorporating 86 apartments for affordable rent, with commercial space on the ground floor together with cycle and disabled car parking. SJD Mechanical Services Contractors Limited, which has over 30 years’ experience in the commercial and residential mechanical services sector across the South East, has installed two Ideal Heating Imax Xtra 2 floor standing commercial condensing boilers running in

cascade in the centralised plant room of this new development, along with a POD Indirect Heat Interface Unit (HIU) in each of the 86 apartments, creating a highly efficient heat network.

What is a heat network?

A heat network (also referred to as a district heating system) delivers thermal energy in the form of hot water from a central source - in this installation, Imax Xtra 2 condensing boilers - to each apartment using a network of insulated pipes. Every apartment has

been fitted with a POD HIU which transfers heat from the distribution network to the apartments’ heating system. The HIU looks just like a domestic boiler from the outside and has similar controls, but instead of burning gas it uses heat exchangers to transfer thermal energy from the hot water in the distribution network to the water in the property’s heating and hot water systems, providing instantaneous hot water and heating. The POD units are compact and designed to easily fit within a standard kitchen cupboard.

Why have a heat network?

The benefits of a centralised boiler plant are that each property will have independent heating and hot water with no need for gas in the property, which means that only one annual inspection will be required and individual properties are not affected. Energy usage within the property is fully controlled through the heat meter, and can be measured so the customer knows exactly what they have used. For the residents in the apartments, the controls are very much like a domestic boiler making it familiar and easy to use.

The Power of the POD

The Ideal Heating POD HIU is designed to meet all the requirements of the heat network installer, operator and end user. It comes in two models, POD Indirect and POD Direct, with the former being installed at Hatcham Road. POD Indirect is a twin plate appliance to provide complete separation from the heat network for both heating and hot water. It is available in 18

HVAC outputs of 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70kW, all of which are BESA registered, having met the requirements of the BESA UK HIU Test Regime for both high and low temperature operating conditions. At Hatcham Road, 40, 50 and 70kW POD HIUs have been installed, dependent on the size of the apartment. Designed for easy installation, the POD first fix kit, which incorporates the service valves, appliance support and hanging bracket, enabled SJD Ltd to do all the pre-piping and testing of the system before the actual HIU units were brought to site.

and service has been second to none. SJD Ltd would definitely recommend these HIUs and Imax Xtra 2 boilers to anyone else, and we would be happy to use again on any of our sites.” https://idealcommercialboilers. com/

Kooltherm Pipe Insulation on Target at Wembley Park

The E01, E02 development at Quintain’s 85-acre Wembley Park, named Madison, reached completion in 2020. The mixed-use scheme includes 633 apartments all connected to a district heating network with secondary pipework insulated using Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation. Work on E01 and E02 Wembley Park was overseen by Wates Construction. The 633 homes at Madison, neighbour the national stadium and a new threeacre park with neighbouring facilities across Wembley Park including a range of retail, residential, office, community, and leisure facilities.

20

HVAC

The M&E specification has been overseen by LJJ Ltd in collaboration with consultants HDR. As part of Quintain’s long-term plan to decarbonise the large district heating network at Wembley Park, it was essential that the building services specification helped to limit energy demand for the new blocks. To help achieve this, Thermal Coverings installed Kooltherm Pipe Insulation on secondary LTHW pipework across the development. With a thermal conductivity as low as 0.025 W/mK, Kooltherm Pipe Insulation offers one of the thinnest and most thermally efficient

commonly available solutions for insulating pipework, supporting a simple installation by Thermal Coverings. This excellent performance can allow specifiers and contractors to limit heat losses when insulating secondary pipework to the minimum insulation thicknesses in table 8 of Objective 3.9 of CIBSE CP1 Heat Networks Code of Practice or to easily meet the new enhanced targets within BS 5422:2023. In addition to helping the project team to achieve excellent system efficiency, Kooltherm Pipe Insulation will also help to limit heat gains from the secondary

pipework within the building. This should help to reduce the risk of summer overheating within the buildings, a key concern within the Greater London region. Kooltherm Pipe Insulation has also been awarded Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold certification, recognising it has best-in-class low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, supporting improved air quality within the completed blocks to safeguard the health and wellbeing of building occupants. The new Kooltherm Pipe Insulation Carbon Calculator Tool is designed to help understand the impact of pipe insulation on operating costs and carbon emissions. Cleaning & Hygiene

How facilities managers can choose the right industrial laundry equipment

There are many factors involved when sourcing new commercial laundry equipment so facilities managers may be struggling to decide what best meets the needs of the organisation. This is particularly the case if you need to meet infection control guidelines. To help you work out which machine types and capacities you require, we’ve put together this commercial laundry equipment guide. How to choose commercial laundry equipment: Hospitals In hospitals and healthcare settings, OTEX laundry systems are vital

22

Cleaning & Hygiene

for preventing outbreaks and keeping linen fresh. Plus, they are also ideal for hospital staff who want to be sure that their staff uniforms, towels and microfibre mops are thoroughly disinfected. As a result, these machines also greatly reduce the transmission risk of healthcareacquired infections (HCAIs). For your hospital laundry room, you should select a barrier washer. These machines prevent clean and contaminated linens from coming into contact. They also help you meet national healthcare standards. As with care

homes, industrial dryers are also important pieces of equipment. Due to the volume of washing and drying you’ll need to complete in the setting, we recommend choosing the largest commercial washing machines and dryers available. The dryers you choose should be fitted with SAFE technology and should feature a tilt function, so it’s easier for staff members to load or unload bulky items. Again, you should also consider the role macerators could play in preventing contamination. Football Clubs We recommend that football clubs use our SMART

Building & Facilities Management

Cleaning & Hygiene washers to produce matchwinning results. Not only do these machines produce the best possible finish time after time, but they also use less energy. Alongside your washer, you should also select a commercial dryer that matches your usual load size (our capacities range from 5kg to 310kg). In an environment such as this, we know just how important results can be. For this reason, as well as selecting the right washers and dryers, it’s also vital that you purchase the right finishing equipment, including irons, rotary irons and ironing tables. Housing Coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers are also the ideal solutions if you’re providing university accommodation or running a holiday park. Not only can these machines help your guests meet their laundry needs, but they can also provide you with an extra revenue stream. In these circumstances, if you only have a small laundry room available, then we recommend that you look at our stackable washing machines and dryers. This way, you can maximise throughput without taking up extra space. You can stack our washing machines in washer-dryer and dryer-dryer combinations. Care homes Using our decades of experience, we’ve developed our OTEX laundry disinfection solutions, which are perfect for care homes. These machines remove all traces of coronavirus, as well as 99.999% of other harmful micro-organisms. They also provide disinfection receipts to prove disinfection has taken place. You could consider a barrier washing machine, which are www.twitter.com/BFM_Magazine

designed for bulky loads and contain separate loading and unloading areas to ensure clean and contaminated linens never come into contact. These washing machines should be combined with our class-leading industrial tumble dryers, which have been designed to cope with even the largest and bulkiest items (such as duvets and sheets). For a care home laundry room, you should also consider whether our automatic medical macerators are appropriate for your needs. These machines provide you with a fast, costeffective and hassle-free alternative to manual sluicing. They also eliminate the risk of wide-area contamination. Hotels and Spas Hotel managers and spa owners will also benefit from our OTEX laundry disinfection solutions. This is because not only will hotel managers enjoy improved hygiene standards, but spa managers will enjoy cheaper utility costs and will be able to provide clean, soft and fluffy towels and bathrobes to guests. Here at JLA, we work with over 3,000 hotels and spas across the UK. As a result, we can help you find the perfect solutions for your laundry room. In these scenarios, we believe our OTEX laundry systems are perfect because they can make your linens last longer, reduce your carbon footprint and kill 99.999% of viruses and bacteria. However, if you believe these systems aren’t right for your needs, then take a look at our SMART washing machines, which are available in a range of drum capacities. You should also choose a commercial tumble dryer that suits the size of your premises. Here at JLA, we cater for all usage levels and our capacities range from 5kg to 310kg.

While large hotels will benefit from a machine with a vast capacity, smaller spas may prefer a more compact option. Schools In an education setting, children will regularly bring in mucky clothes and dirty items. Others may have accidents and some may even be ill. Due to these circumstances, schools must have adequate laundry facilities in place. While schools will likely only require a domesticsized commercial dryer with a 7kg-8kg capacity, they will benefit from an OTEX laundry system. These machines can stop outbreaks occurring and can help schools save money on utility bills. Prisons Prisons require commercial laundry equipment to ensure everything runs like clockwork. Our wing laundry facilities have been designed with compliance and capacity in mind. So, regardless of whether you have a small prison population or you’re running a large facility that requires roundthe-clock washing and drying facilities, we can supply everything you need. In these settings, we recommend our OTEX laundry systems, which can also prevent outbreaks in the prison population and can keep both prisoners and wardens alike safe. We hope this commercial laundry guide has provided you with all the information you need to make an informed buying decision. However, if you’d like to learn even more or have a specific question about any of our pieces of laundry equipment, talk to our laundry experts today. Whatever your business needs, we have a solution. www.jla.com Cleaning & Hygiene

Four Years In The Making Stonehealth Launches The Doff

Conservation and restoration pioneers Stonehealth are expecting a new era of growth following the launch of an upgraded version of their iconic superheated water cleaning system. The Gloucestershire company has launched the Doff III – a new and improved, even safer and more sustainable version model of the machine favoured by architects, specifiers and cleaning industry professionals in the UK and worldwide. Four years and a six figure sum have been invested in the development of the new machine, which is based on customer feedback from the previous (and continuing) incarnation, the Doff Integra. The Doff III has an improved, lighter, fully integrated pump requiring 50 per cent less power usage, a remote power control, an electronic temperature control system to reduce water consumption, and increased maximum hose length of 45 metres, while still achieving a steam heat of 150 degrees C at the end of the nozzle. Stonehealth, which is based in Cam, near Dursley, is now targeting overall sales growth of more than 30 per cent in 2024. At the same time the company has appointed Angela Southern as business development director, as the company seeks to enhance its reputation and explore new markets. “We’re delighted with the new machine,” said Brian Crowe, Executive Chairman and founder of Stonehealth, “and we’re looking forward to introducing it to the market. “Over the past 30 years we’ve earned a status as leaders in our field and we’ve got a catalogue of projects, from cathedrals to historic landmarks, to make us proud of what we’ve achieved. “However we are always looking to improve what we do, to make our machines even easier 24

Cleaning & Hygiene

to use and more economical. The original Doff went to market over 20 years ago and the principles have remained the same since then. But like the Integra was, the Doff III is a significant upgrade on its predecessor, and we’ll continue to innovate and create new features as time progresses. “We’re proud of our status as a UK manufacturer of industryleading equipment which is used around the world. Now that we have the Doff III to offer, we’re excited to see where we go next.” The Doff III is based on the knowledge that steam at 150C will not only remove most dirt and contaminants from various types of stone, but will also kill off biological spores without the need for harsh biocides. At the same time the control of pressure, water temperature and volume deployed by the Doff III creates an extremely gentle cleaning operation which preserves the integrity of antique stonework. Mr Crowe said: “We care about the preservation of

historic buildings and so it is important that contractors using our systems are properly trained in the right techniques and maintenance. “So we have revised our Rosette accreditation system, which ensures that a community of approved contractors are available to architects and specifiers looking for best in class operators. “With Angela newly appointed to lead on business development, we believe the launch of the Doff III heralds an exciting landmark in the journey of our business. “We know that there are many other applications for this technology, in a variety of scenarios outside the preservation and cleaning of masonry. That may be agriculture, healthcare, marine systems, food production or any other situation where cleaning without chemicals is required. “The possibilities for this company are endless, so we’re ready to get moving.” Building & Facilities Management

Lighting

Architectural vs public realm lighting: 5 key differences

At DFL, we often get asked about the difference between architectural and public realm lighting. For us, the answer’s simple… Architectural lighting involves illuminating a building, structure or property to accentuate its features. On the other hand, public realm lighting is about using light to improve the accessibility and ambience of built environments — covering more ground (literally and figuratively) than the former lighting type. As a lighting consultancy that believes lighting designs should work in harmony to emphasise the visual appeal of buildings and elevate the areas that surround them, we’ve got a pretty good understanding of the factors that set these two approaches apart — and which way to go for the best results. Want to know more? Your wish is our command…

1. Scope and scale vary between the two

The most obvious difference between architectural and public realm lighting is how much is being lit. Usually, architectural lighting designs will focus on lighting up the key features on the building at hand. For example, a few spotlights might be used to highlight accents like stain glass windows and alcoves on places like churches, museums and heritage sites. In contrast, the sky’s the limit when it comes to the scope and scale of public realm lighting projects, which are concerned 26

Lighting

with various aspects of outdoor spaces. For example, these schemes might use cluster lights or strips to brighten up anything that’s used or seen by pedestrians, cyclists, drivers and residents, like forecourts, pathways and plants.

2. They don’t seek to serve the same purpose

To say the point of architectural and public realm lighting designs are different would be an understatement. As architectural lighting designs are concerned with how buildings look, these schemes might use creative assets like floodlights to send a wash of illumination over a building’s façade and ensure it has as much (if not more) of a visual impact at night as it does in the day. Unsurprisingly, that’s not the case for public realm projects. Whilst aesthetics play an important part in these types of lighting schemes, they do only play apart. Public realm

lighting also involves ensuring pedestrians have visibility over key access routes for wayfinding and safety purposes, meaning ultra-bright assets that could cause light spill, glare and visual discomfort are a no-go.

3. Their functionality requirements aren’t the same

It’s not just where and why the lights architectural and public realm lighting use that differ, it’s also how these lights function. With architectural lighting schemes, assets boasting artistic or decorative functions are key to creating dramatic visual effects that suit the time of year or event. For instance, colour-changing LEDs can be set to vivid reds and greens to show a building’s festive spirit at Christmas. These same colour-changing lights can also feature public realm lighting designs, such as in fountains, but not if they interfere with accessibility. On areas like pathways and steps, lights with an adjustable output Building & Facilities Management – Jan/Feb 2022

Lighting function may be used instead — their brightness can be increased to ensure pedestrians can see where they’re going from dusk ‘til dawn.

4. One’s got to be inclusive, one doesn’t

Whilst architectural lighting illuminates building exteriors that people see, public realm lighting brightens up the spaces people use. Thus, they have very different approaches to inclusivity. Architectural lighting schemes might avoid design features known to cause problems for those with a sensitivity to light, such as flashing lights or assets with strobe effects that can trigger seizures in epileptic onlookers and distress autistic passers-by. But that’s typically about it. However, needing to be as practical as they are decorative, public realm lighting schemes treat catering peoples’ diverse needs as a top priority. So, these designs will follow guidance from the likes of BS8300-1:2018 to ensure inclusivity — avoiding glare, which can worsen visual impairments, by adopting solutions like louvers and clearly lighting steps, stairs and wheelchair ramps.

5. The environment isn’t equally important to both

Every new lighting installation must consider sustainability nowadays. Still, some treat eco-friendliness as a secondary concern, whilst others hold it as highly as aesthetics and practicality. Because architectural lighting schemes only have one box to tick — visual appeal — they don’t need to factor in things like energy consumption. In turn, the assets that achieve the most aesthetically pleasing results are bound to be chosen over ones that are www.twitter.com/BFM_Magazine

less damaging to the planet. Meanwhile, as public realm lighting is all about improving outside spaces both aesthetically and practically, eco-friendly solutions that help towns and cities reach their sustainability targets and support a more sustainable future are often the default, whether that’s super-efficient LEDs or even solar-powered assets. And with the right lighting design, they can still look the part, too.

So, which one’s better?

There’s no denying that architectural lighting can be an effective way to shine a light

on impressive buildings and structures (pardon the pun). We just think that you can do this and more with public realm lighting, which can improve an entire built environment across the board — resulting in safe, inviting and user-friendly spaces that local communities will love. So, if you want our advice, go big or go home! Invest in a comprehensive public realm lighting design that tackles a range of important factors all together. We know it might sound daunting, but you could have your dream scheme in no time with the help of our experts… www.dfl-uk.com Lighting

Sonify By Zentia Used On Refurbishment Project At Edinburgh University CHALLENGE

St Leonard’s Land at the University of Edinburgh is a campus building that has a tradition in housing the university’s physical education department, with extensive facilities such as a sixlane research and teaching swimming pool, multiple gymnasiums, squash courts and a large Games Hall. The university recently embarked upon a refurbishment project to rejuvenate the Level Three Male and Female changing rooms, seeking a comprehensive refurb that would provide a fresh and modern space that would appeal to students. Zentia, the UK’s leading ceiling solutions provider, has an existing, historical relationship with the university, and the project team were eager to leverage Zentia’s latest innovation, the Sonify system as an all-around solution that would meet their aesthetic vision but also deliver on functionality.

SOLUTION

The university specified a series of Sonify canopies and baffles in orange and grey in February 2023, and by the summer of 2023, Zentia’s Sonify system had been successfully installed by Howe Ceilings and Interiors, meeting the university’s timeline requirements. Zentia’s Sonify system responded to the client’s desire for a vibrant and distinctive space, with colourful elements not only adding a zonal effect to the area but also empowering architects to enhance the creativity and individuality of the project. The entire 28

Building & Refurbishment

scheme unfolded through Zentia’s Sonify approach, starting from the initial brief and colour hand samples to the Sonify 3D studio playing a pivotal role in designing solutions before materials were delivered to site in a kit format. Senior Architectural Technologist for the project, Adrian Cavaye, said: “The canopy colour, profile, shape and orientation options Zentia offer with its Sonify range are an excellent alternative to the standard white baffle canopy, and allow any number of different design solutions to the ceiling space. The lack of minimum order quantity for colours makes then a very appealing product.” The process was swift and efficient, and offered the university a visually appealing design, whilst also providing a secure grid system ensuring stability for years to come. Design support was provided throughout the project,

with Zentia staff playing a crucial role in fine-tuning the design requirements. Commenting, Ross Howe, Managing Director at Howe Ceilings said: “As a Pinnacle partner collaborating with Zentia, our team, freshly trained on this new product at Zentia’s Academy, were highly impressed by the efficiency and striking aesthetics of this innovative product during this project. We eagerly anticipate its widespread adoption in our ongoing initiatives, confident in its transformative impact on the project landscape.” With the successful completion of the refurbishment project at the University of Edinburgh, students can continue their educational journey in a vibrant space that is aesthetically pleasing and has enhanced acoustic qualities, allowing the optimal environment for successful learning. www.zentia.com/en-gb/sonify/ Building & Facilities Management
