Creak-free flooring from West Fraser

West Fraser’s CaberFloor P5 is a high-performance particleboard which is widely specified by developers, architects and self-builders due to its stability, durability and ease of installation. The high-density panels come in thicknesses of 18 or 22mm, in both square-edged or tongue and grooved profiles; the latter features profiles on all four sides to offer maximum flexibility. The precision-engineered edges ensure smooth and speedy installation while the tight-fitting joints eliminate creaking.

Choosing T&G CaberFloor P5 removes the need for intermediate noggins,

while ‘secret’ or hidden nailing or screws can be employed within the joints. Alternatively, CaberFix Joint&Joist adhesive can be applied to the edges, further countering the risk of squeaks and creaks that blight traditional floorboards and many ply or particleboard decks. CaberFix D4 is also ideal for bonding flooring boards to both joists and tongue and groove joints and for sealing the board edges.

Available in lengths of 2400mm and 600mm wide, the floor panels, which are net carbon negative, are both FSC® (C012533) and CE-certified and are ideal

for humid environments, in residential as well as newbuild or retrofit applications.

Samples of all West Fraser construction panels, which are manufactured in Scotland, can be ordered on the website Uk. westfraser.com. Head to the housebuilder page on the website to download a selection of tools including a fully-interactive guide to all West Fraser products and a checklist to make sure you have everything you need for your build.

THUNDER: Clivet PRESENTS the full inverter REVERSIBLE heat pump from 40 to 85 kW with natural refrigerant R-290

Thunder, the new energyefficient air-cooled reversible heat pump with natural refrigerant R-290

Thunder is an innovative solution since it is designed with full-inverter technology on latest-generation scroll compressors and axial fans. It offers maximum energy efficiency and thanks to the use of R-290, a natural and ecological refrigerant (GWP = 3) that can be used in the long term as it is fully compliant with the European regulation on fluorinated F-Gas (517/2014), it contributes to the reduction of the direct and indirect greenhouse effect.

Thunder is available in the 40 to 85 kW capacity range and is characterised by high performances, application versatility and extended operating limits.

Top performance

The unit achieves outstanding performances for medium temperature applications: with a seasonal efficiency in heating SCOP (W55) up to 3,63 the unit far exceeds the minimum requirements of the Ecodesign (ErP) directive.

Application versatility

The Thunder guarantees heating, cooling and domestic hot water production up to 75°C and an operating range in heating from -20°C to +42°C ambient air.

Thunder is perfect both for meeting the minimum requirements for new buildings and for use in refurbishment due to its ability to produce hot water at high temperatures, making it suitable for use as an alternative and replacement for boilers, in combination with classic radiator systems. Thanks to the careful design, the unit delivers a heat capacity very close to the nominal data, even at very

News 14 News Building & Facilities Management

cold outside air temperatures. Maximum silence Thunder offers 3 acoustic levels, without varying the size of the unit:

⁃ Acoustic configuration with compressor soundproofing (SC): basic version; Silenced acoustic configuration (LN): from -2 to -4 dB (A) less compared to SC version; Super-silenced acoustic configuration (EN): from -6 to -10 dB (A) less compared to SC version

Safety

Thunder is designed in full compliance with European safety standards, and additional safety measures such as the ATEX gas leak detector sensor and extraction

fan are installed as standard. All components are suitable for the use of R-290 refrigerant.

Modularity

Thunder is designed for modularity and dedicated hydraulic connections simplify and speed up the installation phase. Up to 6 units can be hydraulically connected in parallel and up to 16 units can be managed in a local network. Thunder has the highest power/ footprint ratio on the market for this type of product due to the possibility of close installation between several modules.

Combinations can also take place between units of different power ratings, and the system obtained by combining several modules retains the strengths of the single module but multiplies

its advantages: greater reliability, simplified handling and installation, quick and easy maintenance, scalability, and redundant operation.

Product manager Giuseppe Barreca comments:

“Thunder is the optimal solution for pursuing the European decarbonisation goals of the coming years. Thanks to the use of an ultra-low GWP refrigerant such as propane (R-290), and the very high levels of efficiency obtained by adopting full-inverter technology, the unit contributes to the reduction of both direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, while guaranteeing maximum comfort and application flexibility.”

Liftroller has partnered with 4 Cladding Services & Industar

They will bring Liftroller’s innovative material-loading products to the UK market. Making them available to hire as well as buy.

The Bergen-based Liftroller has a suite of products. They make loading and unloading building materials into city projects easier. They also make it much safer.

The orange Liftroller platforms allow cranes & telehandlers to place loads onto them. You can then roll the loads into the building using the E Wagon.

What is the Liftroller system?

The Liftroller system is modular in its approach to safety and includes:

• Liftroller Wall – a landing platform to get material in and out of high-rise windows

• Liftroller Table – a limitless extension to the Liftroller Wall to create storage & unloading bays within the building

• Liftroller E Wagon – a remote control-operated trolley for moving goods around the site

As well as the above, Liftroller have developed the Liftroller Floor.

This is a landing platform for use on new build sites where

you are not restricted to window and aperture openings.

How can Liftroller benefit me?

The Liftroller is the most effective way of getting large volumes of materials into buildings with multiple storeys.

Special Feature 18 Special Feature Building & Facilities Management

The materials usually arrive by crane lorry in any case, so instead of temporarily storing them on the ground or hoisting them onto a goods trolley, it is much quicker to move the materials directly from the back of the lorry straight through a window on the destination floor.

With the Liftroller you simply use existing openings in the façade. On renovation projects, you do not have to cut large openings or expand window apertures to get materials on site.

Don’t forget, when using an outside construction lift you often have to wait your turn until the lift is free. That takes up unnecessary time.

How long does Liftroller take to install?

The Liftroller is made from aluminium and is therefore both sturdy and light.

It is made up of 10 components which on their own are easy to carry to the floor where they will be used.

Assembly takes less than half an hour. It is so simple that you do not have to hire an external installer.

Bet it costs a fortune?

Taking a real-life example…

Before a contractor started using Liftroller, they were using a construction lift which could carry 32 plasterboard sheets and 2 people.

In addition, the contractor had 4 operatives on the ground floor, plus 4 workers on the upper floor where the plasterboard was destined to be.

32 plasterboard sheets were shifted every 10 minutes by 10 workers.

With Liftroller: 80 sheets are shifted in 10 minutes by 2 workers.

This is resulted in saving 192 hours that could be spent fitting the sheets rather than carrying them.

But what about larger refurbishment projects?

Imagine having to load 2,800 packs of building material up 3 stories for a building conversion project.

Before using Liftroller, it took around 20 minutes for each pack of materials to reach their required destination.

Why 20 minutes?

Three workers per pack of materials were needed due to steep ramps to and from the lift. They often had to wait for the lift to be freed up before they could move their materials.

With Liftroller, the contractors saved 2,520 hours.

So, who are 4 Cladding Services & Industar?

For over 20 years, 4 Cladding Services found

success representing VIAVAC Vacuum Lifting BV by hiring and selling vacuum lifters. These include composite sandwich panel vacuum lifters and glass vacuum lifters.

The business now operates a hire fleet of over 200 vacuum lifters. This experience provides a great foundation. The Liftroller rental fleet can grow in the UK on the back of this platform.

Industar on the other hand represents Verhagen Leiden BV electric tow tugs here in the UK. These products are designed to increase safety and make it easier to move heavy & bulky loads around workplaces & construction sites.

In contrast to commercially available electric infrared heaters with quartz or halogen heating element, the electric infrared heater from Schwank has robust, efficient heating elements named infraGlow, which operate at high surface temperatures of approx. 800 degrees Celsius. According to the manufacturer, their service life is around ten times longer than that of the quartz elements that are often used. At the same time, the eSchwank S-18000 does not generate any potentially harmful light source for the eyes, which could occur with quartz or halogen

heating elements. This is a significant product advantage, especially in spots where employees work stationary, for long periods of time.

Proof that the eSchwank S-18000 is designed for a long service life is its ease of maintenance. For instance, the heating elements can be replaced in just a few minutes if necessary. The water spray protected device can also be complemented with other useful features. For example, a protective grille is available for applications in sports facilities, a ModBuscompatible control system can be used for integration into a Building Management System (BMS) and Schwank offers special mounting brackets for the installation on walls. The 3-step version of the eSchwank S-18000 is controlled via the SchwankControl or via a higher-level Building Management System (BMS). On the electrical side, each device has its own relay box

including electrical contactors. Overall, the decades of experience in the field of infrared heating are reflected in the design. The fire-aluminised and therefore corrosionresistant and sturdy housing of the new eSchwank S-18000 has a double-shell design extending far over the heating elements. In this way, Schwank achieves to produce a heat cushion on the underside of the appliance that is important for a high infrared yield. The three-step modulating control can realise 6, 12 and, at full power, 18 kW. This means that the eSchwank S-18000 can also economically cover the heat demand that is actually required during transitional periods. The device’s dimensions and low weight take into account typical building features such as sprinkler spacing or ceiling loads. This means that the eSchwank S-18000 can usually replace existing gas-fired appliances on a one-for-one refurbishment. www.schwankgroup.com

Arco takes sustainability to new heights with huge rooftop solar installation

Arco, the UK’s leading safety company, has further demonstrated its responsible approach to sustainability by installing more than 2,300 solar panels on the rooftop of its National Distribution Centre in Hull.

The National Distribution Centre (NDC) is the first of several Arco sites across the UK that will benefit from rooftop solar energy, as the company moves away from a dependency on fossil fuels.

Similar installations are planned for Arco Safety Centres at Bracknell in Berkshire, Eccleshall in Staffordshire, and Linlithgow in West Lothian, as well as the Arco Clothing Centre in Preston, Lancashire.

Guy Bruce, Arco’s chief executive, said: “At Arco, we’re looking at every aspect of our business to see how we can reduce our impact on the planet.

“As part of our responsible

approach to sustainability, we are constantly finding ways to improve the energy and carbon efficiency of our operations, including the use

of renewable energy sources, intelligent LED lighting systems and low-emission vehicles.

“Renewable energy is an important part of our goal of

achieving net zero emissions by 2045, and just one way in which we are taking action to secure a safer tomorrow for businesses, people and the planet.”

The 425,000 sq ft NDC is Arco’s main storage and distribution centre, holding up to 40,000 pallets and servicing up to 10,000 orders a day, maintaining the company’s excellent service to customers.

The 2,352 solar panels have been installed by renewable energy specialist Heatsource

Direct over the past few weeks, and from next month (May) they will provide about 50 per cent of the NDC’s power demand.

The panels will generate around 780,922 kWh of energy a year, roughly the same as the annual power consumption of 289 houses.

This will mean an annual CO2 reduction of around 182,276kg, equivalent to planting 7,291 trees each year. i

said: “It’s fantastic to see a nationally recognised company putting renewable energy at the forefront of their agenda.

“By moving away from traditional sources of energy, Arco will save money on their electricity bills, while also significantly reducing their carbon footprint, something that’s becoming ever more important for large companies.”

Trident Building Consultancy teams up with UKGBC to deliver bespoke sustainability training

AN environmentally conscious surveying practice is putting sustainability at the heart of its service provision with the creation of a new, bespoke internal training course.

Trident Building Consultancy has joined forces with the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) to create a unique course which is aimed at upskilling every building surveyor and project manager working in the business.

The move bucks the industry trend of having a specialist sustainability individual or small team within a practice that provide advice and input into specific projects.

By providing the training across the whole of the business, Trident is ensuring sustainability and reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions is at the forefront of every survey and project it undertakes, helping clients to minimise their impact on the environment.

Managing director Dan Roe said the initiative came about because sustainability is the highest topic on everyone’s agenda, particularly clients.

The first cohort, comprising of Trident’s senior leaders, has already got started on the programme, with the business aiming to roll out further training to the remainder of Trident’s surveyors over the next year.

Mr Roe said: “Many surveying practices and building consultancies have gone down the route of recruiting a small number of in-house staff or small teams that specialise in sustainability.

“Whereas we would never rule that out, we want to go beyond that and upskill all of our existing client-facing workforce. We already have a good knowledge

and experience of sustainability such as energy performance and how to make buildings more efficient, but we want to turn that into a much wider knowledge so we can advise our clients more comprehensively.

“We’re trying to embed sustainability in everything thing we do. A building surveyor’s mindset was traditionally always to fix buildings, but we now want our surveyors not just to be looking at how we repair buildings but how we make them more energy efficient, too. It is a bit of a mindset change and the training programme we’ve developed is designed to facilitate that.”

The training course has been developed in partnership with UKGBC, a membership organisation established to transform the sustainability of the built environment.

It comprises of online and classroom-based training delivered by experts from the UKGBC, covering topics

such as ESG and the built environment, decarbonising buildings, and how net zero strategies can be integrated into commercial retrofits.

Mr Roe said it was fantastic to be working with the UKGBC which he described as ‘a leading authority on making buildings more sustainable’.

“They have more than 700 members who are all extremely passionate about the subject,” he said.

“They lobby government on policy and are at the coalface of developing sustainable solutions that enable people and nature to thrive side-by-side.

“Partnering with them for this training means we’re in great hands.”

Trident Building Consultancy has nine offices across the UK and Ireland, including Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, and Manchester.
