THE ABBEY COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE ACADEMIC JOURNEY At Abbey College Cambridge, we offer a dynamic and well-rounded British curriculum that prepares our students for both examination success and long-term achievement in their future studies.
SENIOR SCHOOL Year 9
Our Year 9 curriculum is designed to prepare students not only for GCSEs but also for A Levels, university, and the modern global workplace. By the time they reach Year 10, students are well equipped to excel in their studies. Year 9 students enjoy their own common room and take part in the schoolwide co-curricular programme, which includes activities during weekends and holidays. They are fully integrated into the school community and belong to one of the student houses, helping them feel connected and supported.
GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) GCSE courses at Abbey College Cambridge are offered over three durations: two years, 18 months, or one year, typically for students aged 14 to 16. Assessment is primarily through public exams at the end of the course, with some subjects including coursework or controlled assessments. These programmes are designed to provide a strong academic foundation for A Level study and other post-16 qualifications. Students on the two-year course usually study up to nine subjects, while those on the one-year course take six. Academic Preparation Course Our Academic Preparation Course enhances international students’ English and subjectspecific skills to prepare them for GCSE, Foundation Programme, and A Level studies. Depending on their abilities, students attend the course for one to three terms. The course also develops skills needed for a British classroom environment, including pair work, projects, independent reading, discussions, and teamwork. British Boarding School Experience (BBSE) Spend a term boarding at Abbey College Cambridge studying the British curriculum and improving your English language skills.

SIXTH FORM A Level
Foundation Programme
A Levels at Abbey College Cambridge are two year (September start) or 18 month (January start) courses for students aged 16–19. Students study three or four subjects over the two year period. Assessment is by final exams, and students can choose from any of the available subjects.
The Foundation Programme is an intensive one year Level 3 course, studied at the same academic level as A Levels, designed to help students progress to UK universities. It is modular, with four assessed modules and 3 exam periods throughout the year. Graduates gain entry to top universities, including Russell Group institutions.

A Cambridge we offer
personalised academic support for every student. This personalised support is tailored to their individual strengths, goals and aspirations. Through regular progress monitoring, expert teaching and targeted intervention where needed, we help students achieve outstanding results and secure places at their firstchoice universities. Support may include one-to-one guidance, additional subject tuition, peer mentoring and tailored study programmes, ensuring every student has the confidence, skills and encouragement to reach their full potential. PERSONAL TUITION All students are allocated a personal tutor. Tutors are experienced members of our teaching staff who will provide support and guidance. Students meet with them daily as part of a tutor group, and then weekly and termly for in-depth personal guidance and feedback sessions.
ABBEY INSPIRES All students benefit from our Abbey Inspires programme, which offers a varied schedule of evening lectures, practical workshops, revision sessions and University of Cambridge activities. Designed to broaden knowledge and encourage intellectual curiosity, sessions are led by expert tutors and guest speakers, often exploring contemporary issues and topics beyond the traditional curriculum. PRE-DEGREE DIPLOMA The Pre-Degree Diploma is our unique university preparation programme for students in Year 12. Whether your dream is to study at Oxbridge, become a doctor, lawyer, engineer or business leader, our Pre-Degree Diploma programme is designed to maximise students’ chances of success. Students apply to UK universities via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). From the summer term of Year 12, all of our students have a dedicated UCAS advisor and will have timetabled weekly sessions to support and guide them through the university application process. These sessions continue throughout Year 13.

UNIVERSITY COURSE PREPARATION Our Oxbridge Candidate Programme (A Level) is designed to give students the best chance of Oxbridge success. It provides comprehensive support through subjectspecific training, seminars, and progress meetings, helping students master key aspects of the application process including knowledge building, admissions tests, interviews, and college selection. Our Medicine Preparation Programme (A Level and FP) provides comprehensive support for students aiming to study medicine, dentistry, or veterinary science. With 5 hours of weekly specialist sessions led by expert tutors and our Head of Medicine, the programme prepares students from diverse backgrounds for successful medicine applications through UCAS and other routes. Over the past five years it has achieved a near 100% success rate. Our Engineering Programme (A Level and FP) allows students to explore a wide range of engineering disciplines and combines weekly engineering enrichment sessions, regular guest talks and hands-on engineering experiences with tailored university admissions tests and interview preparation. Our Business & Finance Pathway (A Level and FP) provides students with a strong foundation in business, economics and enterprise through a dynamic programme of enrichment activities, guest talks from industry professionals, and hands-on projects. It develops commercial awareness, critical thinking and entrepreneurial skills, helping students build competitive university applications and prepare for future careers in business and related fields.

ACADEMIC ENGLISH SUPPORT All non-native English speaking students receive up to five taught lessons of Academic English every week. This will continue until they achieve an IELTS score of 7.5. Years 9 – 11 will follow the GCSE English syllabus. Academic English helps students to understand the terminology used in lessons, to make sure that English is not a barrier to academic success, and they meet the English language requirements of their target universities. Students can opt to continue their English studies after they have achieved an IELTS score of 7.5 at no additional cost.

: T H IG L T O P S IC M E D A C A E IN IC D E M O T Y A W PATH dedicated preparation O ur programme is designed to
give students hoping to study Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science the best chance of success. Aspiring doctors in Years 9-11 can attend our Young Medics Club where they will start to build key medical knowledge and explore the varying career paths on offer within the field of medicine. The two-year Medicine Preparation Programme starts in Year 12 and ensures that our students are prepared in every aspect required for a successful medicine application. We are experienced in preparing students from a wide range of backgrounds to progress to a medicine degree via UCAS and other application routes. The programme involves five hours of specialist medicine application preparation sessions each week, led by our Head of Medicine and delivered by expert Abbey College Cambridge tutors. Students joining us in Year 13 are also able to benefit from the programme and will join the second year.
THE RESULT Abbey College Cambridge has had a near 100% success rate over the last five years for students applying for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary degrees at university. Students receive weekly additional timetabled lessons; with our guidance they will: Æ Learn about the NHS Æ Engage in scientific research projects (essay writing, book review, disease presentation) Æ Learn about university course options Æ Read articles in scientific journals Æ Learn scientific topics e.g. anatomy, antibiotic resistance, pandemics, biochemistry Æ Practice medical university interviews Æ Write medicine personal statements Æ Prepare for the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) Æ Complete online medicine courses It is expected that medicine students will take a maximum of 3 A Level subjects in order to facilitate the extra medicine preparation work. In recent years students have progressed to medicine at King's College London, University of Liverpool, Brunel, University of Lancashire, University of Dundee, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University of St Andrews and Aston University to name a few.

I am immensely honoured to be part of the Medical Society at Abbey College Cambridge which I first joined as an 18-month A Level student. Reaching this stage of my journey would not have been possible without the incredible support from my teachers throughout my medical school application process. One of the most valuable experiences was the preparation I received after getting medical school interview invitations. It was a golden opportunity to have one-to-one mock interviews with school leaders and teachers, who helped me build confidence and feel more comfortable discussing complex medical topics. Thanks to this support, I was fortunate to receive offers from all the medical schools where I interviewed; this major milestone brings me one step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a doctor. Clubs and Activities At Abbey College Cambridge we run more than 40 exciting staff and student led clubs. It is all part of our amazing enrichment and clubs programme. Designed to provide students with amazing opportunities to achieve outside the classroom, enrichment is divided into six categories (with an example of clubs available): Æ Active; Rowing, Football, Running Club, Boxing Æ Community; Debating, Student Leadership, Yoga Æ Thinking; Virtual Trading, TED Talks, Chess Æ Science & Technology; Biology Club, Chemistry Practicals & Engineering Æ Music; Music for all & Music for Musicians Æ Creative Arts; Animation, Presentation Skills, Marketing and Media Each enrichment activity has outcomes that are specifically tailored to give students experiences that they will treasure for the rest of their lives, but also, very importantly, experiences they can talk about in university applications or job interviews in the future. Wednesday afternoon enrichment is compulsory for all students.
We also offer weekly clubs and sports outside of enrichment. These include competitive football, basketball, badminton, tennis, English support, photography, cooking and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. There is truly a club to suit everyone and if we don’t offer a club, we can help students find one locally. EVENTS
Our Student Council and Student Leadership Team work with the school to provide a number of events and celebrations throughout the school year. Highlights always include New Year celebrations, Christmas Ball and the Spring Ball. We hold a Graduation Ceremony in May each year to say farewell and celebrate the achievements of our Year 13 leavers.

TRIPS
We offer subject-related trips alongside optional social trips that take place at weekends and during holidays to various destinations around the UK and overseas. Future trips are planned to Rome and Athens. Younger students (under the age of 16) also benefit from our Young Explorers Saturday morning activity programme designed to encourage a love of the outdoors, local history and the natural environment. Through exploring Cambridgeshire and its surroundings, students develop social skills, environmental awareness and a strong sense of wellbeing while enjoying the many benefits of outdoor learning. One of my favourite things about studying at Abbey College Cambridge is the range of opportunities available outside the classroom. STUDENT EXPERIENCE CHARLES FROM UK YEAR 9
I have noticed how different this school is from other schools. Instead of our learning being confined to the classroom, Abbey uses its position in Cambridge to extend learning into the real world. Through the weekly University of Cambridge lectures, we can engage directly with world-class teaching, researchers and politicians discussing current global issues and innovative research. Being given access to university-level ideas as one of the youngest students has improved my academic maturity. Topics like politics, AI, science and social justice are easier to understand now because they have been explained using real examples from experts. This has also helped me understand difficult ideas in lessons and use real examples in discussions instead of just relying on me memorising information.
RAIN A highlight here is the pastoral support. Whether it's your tutor, the SEND team or your subject teachers, everyone genuinely cares about how you are doing. They check in on you, support you with your homework and help you through stressful times like mock exams and GCSEs. Year 11 can be challenging, and I really appreciated having that level of care and encouragement.

FROM CHINA FOUNDATION PROGRAMME I decided to switch to the Foundation programme during my first week of A Levels, and it turned out to be a really positive decision for me. The FP content and exam style suited me much better. At first, I was worried that I might struggle, especially with Maths and Economics, but my teachers provided excellent support. They gave extra help whenever I needed it, which really helped me build my confidence and understand the material.

While studying here, Abbey College Cambridge taught me how to stay flexible and self-reliant. I've learned a lot in the school, and it has prepared me for adult life. I've learned skills such as taking responsibility for my own personal learning and staying resilient when the environment is rapidly changing and things don't go the way you wish they would.
I joined Abbey College Cambridge at the start of Year 13, and because I was moving from a different school, there were some differences between the exam boards. When I arrived, the school arranged academic support lessons for me to identify those gaps and cover any missing topics outside of my normal class time. This meant I could catch up quickly and stay on track with the rest of my class.
