November was an exciting month at Abama as our newly opened Plaza Abama hosted its first large event: a press conference for tennis World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. The 19-year-old, who is recovering from an injury, spent several days holidaying in our Las Terrazas de Abama Suites. We welcomed media and numerous dignitaries from Tenerife, including President of the Cabildo of Tenerife Pedro Martín and Guía de Isora Mayor Josefa Mesa. Afterwards, Alcaraz sat down with Brendan Breen, the Director of Abama Golf & Abama Tennis, to talk about his stay and the exciting year ahead.
Noviembre fue un mes muy emocionante en Abama, ya que nuestra recién inaugurada Plaza Abama acogió su primer gran evento: una rueda de prensa del Número 1 del mundo del tenis, Carlos Alcaraz. El joven de 19 años que se recupera de una lesión, pasó varios días de vacaciones en nuestras Suites de Las Terrazas de Abama. Recibimos a los medios de comunicación y a numerosas personalidades de la isla como el presidente del Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, y la alcaldesa de Guía de Isora, Josefa Mesa. Después, Alcaraz se reunió con Brendan Breen, director de Abama Golf & Abama Tennis para hablar sobre su estancia y el emocionante año que se avecina.
You’ve been here for a few days on holidays at Abama and I hope you’re enjoying the resort and its surroundings. First of all, I’d like to congratulate you on closing out the year as the ATP World No. 1. How do you feel about being the youngest tennis player in history to have obtained that title?
Well, to me it’s amazing. Since I started playing tennis, basically, my dream was to be number one in the world, to win a Grand Slam, and to be able to achieve it so soon is, for me, as I said, incredible. Everything has come very, very quickly, but I think it’s the fruit of the day-to-day work over years of playing tennis.
The fans obviously have high expectations for the start of your ’22-’23 season. Are you looking forward to the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year?
I can’t wait to start, really. I’ll go as I go to each tournament: trying to win it, believing that I can win it. I have enough time to prepare, to get in good training sessions, have a good preseason. I’m very excited to go to Australia.
Great players like Nadal and Djokovic have praised your game and believe you still have a lot left to reveal. How does it feel to receive praise like that from some of the most world-renowned tennis players in the history of the sport?
Well, honestly, many times I still can’t believe it. When someone like Rafa or Djokovic or Federer talks about your game - not just about how good something is for tennisit’s special. It still feels unreal. But it’s incredible to be able to share dressing rooms and tournaments with the players you watched as a child and - obviously - it’s incredible that they would praise my game in that way.
What impressions of Tenerife are you taking away with you? Of its landscapes, its food and its people? Have you been here before?
No, this was my first visit, and I was very pleasantly surprised. It is a very beautiful area with amazing landscapes and super friendly people. And you eat spectacularly here, too. The truth is I was very surprised and it’s a place I would return to.
Has pasado unos días de vacaciones en Abama Resort Tenerife y espero que realmente hayas disfrutado del destino y el entorno. En primer lugar me gustaría felicitarte por haber cerrado el año como Número 1 del ATP. ¿Cómo te sientes, además, al ser el tenista más joven de la historia en haber obtenido este título?
Para mí es increíble. Desde que empecé a jugar al tenis mi sueño era ser número uno del mundo y ganar algún Grand Slam pero poder conseguirlo tan pronto en mi carrera es realmente increíble. Ha venido todo muy, muy rápido y creo que es el fruto del trabajo de cada día y de todos los años de jugar al tenis.
Los aficionados tienen grandes expectativas por el arranque de la temporada ’22-’23. ¿Cómo piensas que vas a afrontar el Open de Australia, el primer Grand Slam del año?
Tengo ya muchísimas ganas de empezar y voy a intentar ir como lo hago en cada torneo: pensando en que puedo ganarlo. Tengo bastante tiempo para prepararlo, para hacer buenos entrenamientos, una buena pretemporada. Y con muchísimas ganas ya de ir a Australia.
Grandes jugadores como Nadal o Djokovic han elogiado tu juego y creen que todavía tienes mucho por demostrar. ¿Cómo te sientes al recibir elogios de tenistas que son referentes del mundo para la historia de este deporte?
Pues, sinceramente, muchas veces no me lo creo. Que gente como Rafa, como Djokovic o Federer hablen sobre tu juego es muy especial y me parece increíble. Es súper bonito poder compartir vestuario y torneos con los jugadores que he admirado desde pequeño y -obviamente- saber que pueden elogiar mi juego de esta manera.
¿Qué impresiones te llevas de Tenerife, de sus paisajes, de la comida y de su gente? ¿Habías estado aquí antes?
La verdad que no. Era la primera vez que venía y me ha sorprendido muchísimo. Es una zona súper, súper bonita con unos paisajes increíbles y gente súper amable. Además, aquí se come espectacular también. La verdad que me ha sorprendido muchísimo. Creo que es un sitio al que volvería.
What recommendations would you give to young people with promise who want to get to the top of the game?
I always say the same thing: the first and most important thing is that they enjoy playing tennis. There are many players - many children - you see who aren’t really having a good time. It seems like they’re maybe forced to be there, and I don’t think that’s right. For me, the main thing is that they should enjoy playing tennis. If later they decide to be more professional and they want to dedicate themselves completely to the game, my advice is that they train at 100% every day, treat every practice like it’s their last one, and obviously don’t rush. Enjoy the journey.
In the last few weeks, we’ve seen you work hard to recover from your injury. Have your days at Abama helped you relax and disconnect a bit?
Yes, they definitely have. The tennis season is very, very long and you need to build in your moments of relaxation. But I have had to go to the gym from time to time while here to continue my recovery process, which is not a simple thing. Overall, though, I’ve had a lot of time to disconnect.
¿Qué recomendaciones harías a las jóvenes promesas que quieren llegar a lo más alto del tenis?
Siempre digo lo mismo: lo primero y lo fundamental es que disfruten jugando al tenis. Hay muchos jugadores, muchos niños, que los ves que no se lo pasan bien del todo. Que están ahí como obligados y eso para mí no es lo correcto. Para mí lo fundamental y lo principal es que disfruten jugando al tenis y luego si quieren ya ser más profesionales y se quieren dedicar a tiempo completo que entrenen cada día al 100% como si fuera el último y obviamente que no tengan prisa y disfruten del proceso.
En las últimas semanas te hemos visto trabajar duro en la recuperación de tu lesión. ¿Estos días en Abama te han servido para relajarte y desconectar un poco?
Sí, sí, la verdad es que la estancia aquí me ha servido para relajarme y desconectar. Al final, la temporada de un tenista es muy, muy larga y siempre tienes que tener tus momentos de relax. Y aunque aquí también he tenido que ir al gimnasio de vez en cuando para seguir con la recuperación que no es sencilla, sí que es verdad que he tenido mucho tiempo para desconectar.
As you’ve seen, Abama has a great gastronomic and leisure offer. You’re staying at Las Terrazas de Abama Suites… Did you try Martín Berasategui’s restaurant, Melvin?
Yes, I went to the restaurant the first day and it was great. I was recently arrived, went down to the restaurant, and it was spectacular. I am definitely enjoying my experience.
Right now we’re at the Abama Tennis facilities. We hope to see you playing here soon! This coming year we’ll host at least three ATP tournaments…which bells does that ring for you?
Well, it brings back great memories of when I played the ATP Challengers. It’s wonderful to be able to bring tournaments to your country and bring tournaments here, isn’t it? For all the players too. I’ve traveled a lot for tennis, and the truth is that having a tournament in a place like this helps you feel better off the court. It makes you happy. So I think the players are going to enjoy it a lot.
As you know, we also have a golf course here that is quite well known in Spain. Obviously, because of your injury, you can’t practice…but do you play golf?
When I can, yes. When I’m at home I really like to play golf.
Are you already at Rafa’s level? He’s a very good golfer, isn’t he?
No, no, I have years in front of me before I reach his level. They started way before me. I still need some time!
Como habrás visto, Abama Resort Tenerife cuenta con una potente oferta gastronómica y de ocio. Justo te alojas en Las Terrazas de Abama Suites… Espero que hayas tenido tiempo de disfrutar del restaurante de Martín Berasategui, Melvin.
Sí, fui el primer día al restaurante y me pareció una pasada. Recién llegado he ido a este restaurante y ha sido espectacular. Estoy disfrutando mucho de toda la experiencia en Abama.
Esperamos verte jugar en las pistas de Abama Tennis muy pronto. El próximo año acogeremos al menos tres torneos ATP. ¿Qué vibraciones te trae eso?
Bueno, me trae muy buenos recuerdos de cuando jugué los ATP Challengers. Es espectacular poder traer torneos a tu país y muy especialmente aquí. La verdad es que es increíble para todos los jugadores. Yo he viajado mucho y puedo decir que tener un torneo en un sitio como Abama te ayuda a estar mejor fuera de la pista. Te alegra la estancia aquí. Así que yo creo que los jugadores lo van a disfrutar mucho.
Como sabes, tenemos también un campo de golf bastante reconocido en España. Obviamente por tu lesión no puedes ni practicar. ¿Juegas al golf?
Cuando puedo, sí. Cuando estoy en casa me gusta mucho jugar al golf.
¿Ya estás al nivel de Rafa? ¿Es muy buen golfista, no?
No, no, todavía me quedan muchos años para llegar a su nivel. Ellos empezaron muchos años antes que yo. Me queda aún un tiempo.

Reconocido como uno de los eventos de golf más prestigiosos de Europa, el Omega European Masters atrae a más de 50.000 visitantes cada año a Crans-sur-Sierre (Suiza). En agosto acudimos a nuestra cita anual con este torneo, instalando allí nuestro Espacio Abama y disfrutando de la compañía de jugadores y aficionados al golf de talla mundial a los que esperamos ver de nuevo en Abama.
Abama was honoured to participate in a media event in London at the beginning of October. Our Marketing and Communications Director, Elodie Casolà, travelled to the UK and was at The Orange to discuss challenges and trends in European luxury real estate, tips for investing overseas, and the topics set to trend in 2023. It was an insightful conversation and we enjoyed sharing the stage with some of our most illustrious peers in the sector, including Wyndham Grand Algarve, Andermatt Swiss Alps, Sphere Estates, and Latitude Residency & Citizenship.
Abama tuvo el honor de participar en un evento dirigido a medios de comunicación en la ciudad de Londres a principios de octubre. Nuestra Directora de Marketing y Comunicación, Elodie Casolà, viajó al Reino Unido y estuvo en The Orange para hablar sobre los retos y tendencias del sector inmobiliario de lujo en Europa, consejos para invertir en el extranjero y temas que serán tendencia en 2023. Fue una charla muy agradable y esclarecedora en la que disfrutamos compartiendo el escenario con algunos de nuestros compañeros más ilustres del sector como Wyndham Grand Algarve, Andermatt Swiss Alps, Sphere Estates y Latitude Residency & Citizenship.
This November Abama hosted the Gran Debate Hotelero Tenerife, an exclusive event bringing together the top names in the hotel industry on Tenerife. The gathering was organised by Grupo Vía, and is one in a series of similar events held in important tourism destinations throughout Spain. Our own Adrián Almirante, the General Manager of Abama Hotels, participated, as did Elodie Casolà, Marketing and Communications Director, alongside reps from Turismo de Tenerife, Grupo Fedola, Canarian Hospitality, Les Roches Global Hospitality Education, CEHAT, and Ashotel.
En noviembre Abama acogió el Gran Debate Hotelero Tenerife, un evento exclusivo para los principales nombres del sector hotelero de la isla. El encuentro fue organizado por el Grupo Vía, y forma parte de una serie de eventos similares que se celebran en importantes destinos turísticos de toda España. We are delighted to welcome Félix Ortiz to our team as the new Real Estate Director for Abama. Félix brings with him 20 years of experience in large-scale projects and he will be responsible for shepherding the resort through the multi-phase construction of Plaza Abama and future Branded Residences.

MyWay Meaningful Hotels, which operates Abama Hotels, has welcomed a new Operations Director, Jorge Monje. He has ample experience in the hospitality sector in the Caribbean, Asia, and Spain in international chains including Barceló, Meliá, Mandarin Oriental, AM Resorts, and others. He began his career in the financial department, rising to VP of Finance for Asia in one of his posts, and since 2008 has held jobs as General Manager of various hotels.

Monje cuenta con una amplia experiencia en el sector hotelero en el Caribe, Asia y España en cadenas internacionales como Barceló, Meliá, Mandarin Oriental y AM Resorts, entre otras. Comenzó su carrera en el departamento financiero hasta llegar a ser Vicepresidente de Finanzas para Asia en uno de sus cargos, y desde 2008 ha ocupado puestos de gran responsabilidad como Director General de varios hoteles.
In the 2022 edition of the World Travel Awards, Las Terrazas de Abama Suites won Europe‘s Leading Luxury All Suite Resort 2022, and Spain‘s Leading Hotel Suite 2022 for Las Terrazas‘ 4-bedroom suites facing the Atlantic Ocean. Once again, Abama Hotels have also been named a Tripadvisor Traveler’s Choice for 2022, and nominated in the Beyond Luxury Awards for 2022. Kayak named them one of their Best Luxury Hotels 2021. Our accommodations also received a 9.2/10 both in booking.com’s Traveller Review Awards 2022 and in British Airways’ Customer Excellence Award 2021. It was named a Spain Prestige Awards Winner for Luxury Suites of the Year 2021/2022.
Internally, we were proud to name Abama’s José Miguel Mesa Rumbos and Javier Jiménez Rodríguez as the recipients of the “MyWay Sustainable Star 2021” award for their outstanding efforts to support sustainability within the resort and on Tenerife through the Abama Green Team.

With 48% of its territory designated as protected land, Tenerife is an island whose biodiversity and nature tourism provide experiences that go far beyond the sun and beach. These experiences, together with the island gastronomy, architecture, culture and traditions, are the assets that Tenerife Tourism CEO David Pérez is leveraging internationally to heighten the destination’s visibility. We spoke with him about his objectives.
Tenerife’s positioning as a destination has skyrocketed in recent years, while simultaneously facing the global demand for sustainability and environmental responsibility. At the institutional level, where does your work lie right now? Which projects or initiatives would you highlight?
Con un 48% de su territorio protegido, Tenerife puede presumir de biodiversidad y desarrollar un turismo verde para consolidarse como un destino rico en experiencias vitales que van mucho más allá de la temporada de sol y playa. Estas características, unidas a su gastronomía, su arquitectura, su cultura y sus tradiciones son las fortalezas que el Consejero Delegado de Turismo de Tenerife, David Pérez, se propone potenciar a nivel internacional y que nos explica en esta entrevista.
Tenerife lleva experimentando un gran cambio de posicionamiento en los últimos años y también recoge nuevas demandas del mercado global como la sostenibilidad o la responsabilidad ambiental, ¿en qué punto está ahora el trabajo desde las instituciones en este sentido? ¿Qué proyectos o iniciativas destacaría?
Our main objective is to rejuvenate our guest target and guarantee generational continuity so visitors keep coming. We think the traditional offer of beach and climate is sufficiently recognized abroad. Therefore, we try to focus on our more premium offers, and in this we maintain a fairly intense public-private collaboration. In this new stage, we want to emphasize other attributes of the destination, like gastronomy, wine, architecture, culture, sports, and heritage, which are perhaps the least known, but that contribute the most to a greater experiential offer. Banking on authenticity allows us to stand out as the most diverse destination in the Canary Islands and one of the most diverse in Spain.
What is the relationship between sustainability and the new tourism profiles?
There is a very marked generational divergence. Young people entering the tourism market ask for authentic experiences and a guarantee that the destination is meeting all sustainability criteria. We also demand this as a destination. With our Biosphere Certification and being committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, conservation is important, inclusion and accessibility are important. They all add up as indicators of sustainability.
How would you like to see the island positioned over the next decade?
We are not aiming to grow in visitor numbers, because the accommodation offer is what it is and the municipalities’ growth plans all propose to minimize the number of new room offers. In addition, some offers are more residential. To maintain our balance, we are not interested in increasing the number of tourists, but in diversifying. We want the traveler looking for culture, sport, or nature to find us, and that’s why we want to strengthen the quality of our offers. Within ten years, Tenerife will have a much more exclusive and selective visitor pool that will understand the diversity of the destination. That means greater spending and tourists with greater purchasing power: a respectful, kind traveler, who also expects a sustainable tourism destination.
What are the strengths of the destination that will help you achieve that goal?
The diversity of experiences is the great strength of Tenerife. We have a very strong personality as a destination. Tour operators will continue to be very important partners for the

En esta nueva etapa queremos poner en valor otros atributos del destino como la gastronomía, los vinos, la arquitectura, la cultura, el deporte, el patrimonio… que quizás por estereotipos sea lo que menos se conoce y lo que más podría contribuir a una mayor oferta experiencial. Gracias a nuestra autenticidad podemos destacar como el destino más diverso de Canarias y uno de los más diversos de España.
¿Qué relación tienen la sostenibilidad y los nuevos perfiles turísticos?
Hay un cambio generacional muy marcado. Los jóvenes que se incorporan al mercado turístico solicitan experiencias auténticas y una garantía de que el destino está cumpliendo con todos los criterios de sostenibilidad. Esto lo demandamos también nosotros como destino. Con la certificación Biosphere y comprometidos con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, la conservación es importante, la inclusión y la accesibilidad son importantes… Todo suma como indicador de sostenibilidad.
¿Cómo les gustaría ver posicionada la isla en la próxima década?
No estamos planteando un crecimiento de turistas, porque la oferta de alojamiento es la que es y los planes de crecimiento de cada municipio plantean un mínimo de nuevas camas. Además, alguna oferta tiende a ser más residencial. Con este equilibrio no estamos interesados en aumentar cantidad de turistas, sino en diversificar. Queremos que el viajero que busca cultura la encuentre, el que busca deporte y naturaleza también lo encuentre, etc. Ahí radica la calidad de la oferta que queremos potenciar. Dentro de diez años Tenerife contará con un perfil mucho más selecto y selectivo que conocerá la diversidad del destino. Eso plantea un mayor gasto, es decir, un turista con un mayor poder adquisitivo. Un viajero respetuoso, amable, que también espera un destino turístico sostenible.
¿Cuáles cree que son las fortalezas del destino para alcanzar ese objetivo?
La diversidad de experiencias es la gran fortaleza de Tenerife. Tenemos una personalidad propia muy fuerte. Los turoperadores
marketing and promotion of the destination, no doubt, but it is also true that for decades Tenerife has been stereotyped and we now have work to do to demonstrate our diversity. For example, why can’t architecture be a theme for tourism routes, or wine, or gastronomy? Artisanal products, culture, international events?
What international events will the island host in 2023?
For 2023 we have confirmed a Sting concert, the World Corporate Golf Challenge, Bluetrail, Spartan Trail, the Giro d’Italia Ride like a Pro and Culture & Business Pride, among many others. There is promotion for the island that comes through the events’ marketing, of course, but we also believe the destination itself has a notable impact on the tourism value chain and we must continue to promote it.
So Tenerife is more than just Carnival?
Exactly. Other destinations may have a limited offer, but the strength of Tenerife lies in its diversity. With a North and South that are also completely different, each one provides its own offer. Tenerife tourism, as a sector, is becoming more and more professional. The President of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, has increased the island’s marketing budget by 35%, and this has made it easier for us to manage a greater number of large-scale actions in comparison with the past. This budget has allowed us to do more promotion, more communication and, therefore, increase familiarity with Tenerife in line with our objectives.
How do you promote, at a strategic level, the fact that 48% of the island is protected territory? Will this be a strength of the island in the future?
In terms of sustainability and the commitments we have taken on, like the Biosphere Certification or our designation as a Starlight Tourism Destination, our management meets all the requirements of these certifications and we can enjoy being a responsible destination. Tenerife Tourism has launched two quite significant initiatives: the first was the Charter for Whale Watching Sustainability, which many companies voluntarily adhere to and which we audit ourselves. The companies that organize these trips have maximum interest in complying with the regulations so the sector can continue doing business. The second was the Charter for the Sustainability of Nature Activities, signed by the principal companies offering active tourism, and representing a commitment to work hand-in-hand with Tenerife Tourism. The environmental departments

¿Quiere decir que Tenerife es mucho más que Carnaval?
Efectivamente. Otros destinos tienen una oferta mucho más limitada pero yo creo que la fortaleza de Tenerife radica en esa diversidad y además, con un Norte completamente diferente al Sur, cada uno con su propia oferta. El turismo en Tenerife es un sector que se profesionaliza cada vez más. El presidente del Cabildo, Pedro Martín, ha incrementado un 35% el presupuesto para la promoción del destino y esto ha facilitado que estemos gestionando un mayor número de acciones de gran envergadura en comparación con las que se realizaban antes. Este presupuesto nos ha permitido hacer mayor promoción, mayor comunicación y por tanto, conseguir mayor conocimiento sobre Tenerife para cumplir nuestros objetivos
¿Cómo se potencia a nivel estratégico el hecho de que el 48% de la Isla sea territorio protegido? ¿Puede convertirse esto en una fortaleza de cara al futuro?
Cuando hablamos de sostenibilidad y de los compromisos adoptados con la certificación Biosphere o el título de Destino Turístico Starlight, hablamos de una gestión en la que todas estas premisas se cumplan y podamos disfrutar de un destino responsable. Turismo de Tenerife ha puesto en marcha dos acciones bastante significativas: la primera fue la Carta por la Sostenibilidad para el Avistamiento de Cetáceos a la que se adhirieron muchas empresas y que nosotros mismos hemos auditado. Las empresas que organizan avistamientos son las primeras interesadas en cumplir con todas las reglas que marcan este sector para que pueda seguir funcionando. La segunda fue la puesta en

We are not a seasonal destination like other islands. We enjoy good temperatures every month, and that allows us to maintain sustainability more easily.
What role can private actors like property developers, hotel operators or resort managers play in attaining these goals?
They are a fundamental part of the destination. Private companies promote their products directly and we support them and facilitate their marketing through Fam Trips, Road Shows, Press Trips and the events we hold throughout the year. We continue developing publicprivate collaboration strategies because it’s how we’ll continue growing, but we begin with the premise that everything can be improved.
Abama Resort was one of the first projects to bet on premium tourism in this part of the island and now many other projects have followed suit. What do you think private initiatives have to offer to the changes Tenerife Tourism wants to bring about?
Abama is synonymous with prestige, quality, and good work, and certainly contributes a lot to the good name of the destination. That is unquestionable, and along with other actors on the island, they have developed a premium offer with a lot of added value. Public-private collaboration in this sense is very valuable, not only for the events that we carry out throughout the year, but for our common ground. We will surely find more ways to collaborate in the future because it is what the destination needs to be competitive.

Aquí gozamos de buena temperatura todo el año y eso nos permite mantener la sostenibilidad.
¿Qué papel pueden tener los agentes privados -promotores inmobiliarios, operadores hoteleros o gestores de resorten este camino?
Ellos son la esencia del destino. Son las empresas privadas las que directamente ofertan su producto y nosotros los respaldamos y les facilitamos esa actividad a través de Fam Trips, Road Shows, Press Trips y todos los eventos que vamos teniendo a lo largo del año. Seguimos trabajando en estrategias de colaboración pública privada porque es la única manera de seguir creciendo, pero partimos de la base de que todo es mejorable.
Con la perspectiva de los años, Abama Resort fue uno de los primeros proyectos en apostar por un turismo premium en una parte muy específica de la isla y hoy por hoy otros muchos proyectos siguen esta senda. ¿Cómo analiza el papel de la iniciativa privada en este cambio?
Abama es sinónimo de prestigio, de calidad, de buen hacer y desde luego aporta mucho al buen nombre del destino. Eso es incuestionable y junto a otros actores en el destino, conforman una oferta Premium de mucho valor añadido. La colaboración publico privada en este sentido es muy valiosa. No solo a través de los eventos que llevamos a cabo a lo largo del año sino de muchos puntos de encuentro en común. Seguro que encontraremos más formas de colaboración porque es lo que la competitividad del destino necesita.
Abama Solidaria was founded in 2020 as a vehicle to support local government and vulnerable groups on the island during the pandemic, but we’re proud to say that its scope has expanded greatly since its early days. It has become the fundraising and external-action arm of Abama’s larger sustainability strategy, and we continue to plan drives for important organisations on the island and to participate in worthy community initiatives.
Like all parts of our sustainability strategy, Abama Solidaria works under the guidance of the United Nations Development Agenda 2030, choosing projects that align with its specific development goals.
Fundada en 2020, Abama Solidaria se concibió como un vehículo para apoyar al gobierno local y a los colectivos más vulnerables de la isla durante la pandemia. Hoy en día nos enorgullece decir que su alcance ha crecido tanto, que se ha convertido en el brazo de recaudación de fondos y acción externa de la estrategia de sostenibilidad más amplia de Abama Resort. Un trabajo continuo con el que seguimos planificando campañas para importantes organizaciones de Tenerife y participando en diversas iniciativas comunitarias.

ATELSAM, the Tenerife Association for the Fight for Mental Health, is one of the activity centers connected with the Guía de Isora CRPS Social Integration Program. We’re happy to say that we have been able to participate with them in some of their programs this year. We hosted a group of their members at Abama Golf, where they received training from our professionals and were introduced to the game.
La Asociación tinerfeña de lucha por la salud mental, ATELSAM es una de las entidades incluidas en el Programa de Integración Social del Centro de Rehabilitación Psicosocial, CRPS de Guía de Isora. Nos alegra decir que este año hemos podido participar con ellos en algunos de sus programas. Abama’s location on one of the most incredible islands in the world has put marine conservation at the centre of our environmental sustainability goals. We actively seek out opportunities to safeguard the underwater flora and fauna for which Tenerife is an important habitat.
In June, we partnered on a beach and ocean cleanup in Playa San Juan with Terramare Medioambiente. This open volunteer organisation plans activities all over the island, working with local firefighters and divers, as well as the National Network of Marine Guards to dive and clean sea beds. We’re happy to say we had a fun and rewarding day, removing several dozen bags of detritus from the area and meeting like-minded people from all over the island.
La ubicación de Abama en una de las islas más increíbles del mundo ha situado la conservación marina en el centro de nuestros objetivos de sostenibilidad. Buscamos activamente oportunidades para salvaguardar la flora y la fauna subacuáticas para las que Tenerife es un importante hábitat.
Como parte de esa estrategia, en junio colaboramos con la asociación Terramare Medioambiente en la limpieza de playas y océanos en Playa San Juan. Esta organización de voluntariado abierto planifica actividades por toda la isla en colaboración con los bomberos y buceadores locales, así como con la Red Nacional de Guardias Marinos para explorar y limpiar el fondo marino. Nos alegra decir que pasamos un día divertido y gratificante, retirando varias docenas de bolsas de detritus de la zona y conociendo a personas afines de toda la isla.
Throughout the months of July, August, and September, Abama Solidaria held a fundraising drive in concert with the Spanish Red Cross to provide eye and dental care for children from vulnerable families on the island who cannot afford to pay for treatment on their own. The Canary Islands has the highest rates of severe poverty in Spain, a situation exacerbated by the pandemic, and organisations like the Red Cross are providing fundamental support in the drive to improve quality of life and health care and mitigate the effects of poverty on the population.
Durante los meses de julio, agosto y septiembre Abama Solidaria realizó una campaña de recaudación de fondos en colaboración con la Cruz Roja Española para brindar atención oftalmológica y dental a los niños de familias vulnerables de la isla que no pueden costearse el tratamiento por sí mismos. Las Islas Canarias tienen los mayores índices de pobreza severa de España, una situación que se ha visto agravada por la pandemia. De modo que organizaciones como la Cruz Roja están prestando un apoyo fundamental en el esfuerzo por mejorar la calidad de vida y la atención sanitaria a la población y mitigar los efectos de la pobreza en la región.
In November we began our annual Christmas drive in concert with local charity organizations. All funds collected will go to buy holiday presents for children from vulnerable families, and the Hogar Sagrada Familia de Tenerife will distribute these for Three Kings’ Day at the beginning of January. This action worked very well last year thanks to the generous contributions of our owners, and we hope this year will be equally successful.
En noviembre comenzamos nuestra campaña anual de Navidad en colaboración con organizaciones benéficas locales. Todos los fondos recaudados se destinarán a la compra de regalos para niños de familias vulnerables, y el Hogar Sagrada Familia de Tenerife se encargará de su distribución para Reyes a principios de enero. Gracias a las generosas aportaciones de nuestros propietarios, esta acción fue un éxito en 2021 y esperamos que este año tenga la misma acogida.
Merkarte is a wonderful artistic, educational and social program developed by the Government of Tenerife to support and promote young artists on the island as they make their way into the workforce. In addition to training and art fairs, the program also organizes a number of exhibitions all over the island to make the work of these creators more visible.
Abama signed a partnership with Merkarte in September, and we’re proud to be able to exhibit the work of several of these artists on the grounds of the resort over the coming months. The beginning of each of the next four seasons will bring a new artist‘s work into Abama Hotels.

Abama firmó un convenio de colaboración con Merkarte en septiembre, y estamos orgullosos de poder exponer la obra de varios de estos artistas en los terrenos del resort en los próximos meses. It was with great fanfare and delight that the doors of Plaza Abama opened to our residents and guests on the 14th of October of this year. This highly anticipated €14 million project, which has been under construction since 2020, signifies a great shift in the center of our residential community, creating a space where Abama’s owners and visitors can dine, gather, relax, and exercise, all in the same spectacular setting.
Like much of the finest prizewinning architecture at Abama, Plaza Abama is the work of Virgilio Gutiérrez and Eustaquio Martínez. This team was behind our Bellevue villas and Las Villas del Tenis, as well as the new Tenerife North airport and various other public works on the island. To their genius we have added the interior design of the equally lauded Alejandro Escudero, a renowned Mexican interior designer who creates a sense of natural luxury in every space he designs. His whole, textured materials like stone and wood pair with natural fibres that lend comfort and timelessness to his projects. Escudero was the designer of the beautiful Nizuc Resort & Spa in Cancún.
Our October opening marked the end of the first development phase of Plaza Abama. The reception and lounge areas for the adjacent Los Jardines de Abama and Las Villas del Tenis are now open, as is the first swimming pool of what will eventually be several within the social complex and spa.
Future phases of Plaza Abama, several of which will be in operation by the end of 2023, will include more dining options, a full fitness center, a gourmet grocery shop, and a complete spa featuring massage rooms, a water circuit, a salon, and more.
Con una inmensa alegría, el 14 de octubre de este año abrimos las puertas de Plaza Abama a nuestros residentes e invitados. Este esperadísimo proyecto de 14 millones de euros ha estado en construcción desde 2020 y supone un gran cambio en el centro de nuestra comunidad residencial porque ofrece un espacio para que los propietarios y visitantes de Abama puedan cenar, reunirse, relajarse y hacer ejercicio, todo en un mismo entorno espectacular.
Plaza Abama entra a formar parte de la premiada arquitectura de Abama Resort. Se trata de una obra gestada por Virgilio Gutiérrez y Eustaquio Martínez, artífices de nuestras villas Bellevue y de Las Villas del Tenis, así como del nuevo aeropuerto de Tenerife Norte y de varias obras públicas en la isla. A su genialidad se suma el interiorismo de Alejandro Escudero, un reconocido diseñador mexicano responsable de obras tan hermosas como el Nizuc Resort & Spa de Cancún. Especialista en crear una sensación de lujo natural en cada espacio que diseña, Escudero combina materiales texturizados como la piedra y la madera con fibras naturales que aportan confort y atemporalidad a cada ambiente.
La inauguración de octubre marcó el final de la primera fase de desarrollo de Plaza Abama. Ya están abiertas las zonas de recepción y salones de los adyacentes Los Jardines de Abama y Las Villas del Tenis, así como la primera de varias piscinas que fomarán parte del complejo social y del spa.
Las futuras fases de Plaza Abama, varias de las cuales estarán en funcionamiento a finales de 2023, incluirán más opciones gastronómicas, un completo centro de fitness, una tienda de alimentación gourmet y un spa con salas de masaje, circuito acuático, salón de belleza y mucho más.
No strangers to large-scale projects, architects Virgilio Gutiérrez and Eustaquio Martínez were the natural choice to bring Plaza Abama to life. Martínez worked together with one of Abama’s other architectural firms, Corona-Amaral Arquitectos, on the design of the Tenerife Norte Airport, which was selected by the Museum of Modern Art to represent new architecture in Spain. The architects have brought much of the same language to the architecture of Plaza Abama.
Gutiérrez and Martínez have used natural materials like stone and wood, together with concrete, to create an aesthetic that feels very modern, and very Tenerife. Large volumes and broad horizontal strokes echo the lines of the island itself. The floor-to-ceiling windows and the four stories of terraced construction integrate Plaza Abama with the terrain upon which it sits and the phenomenal views that surround it. The Atlantic Ocean, the island of La Gomera, and the greens of Abama’s golf course create a panorama matched only by the sunsets they accompany.
The architects are on a roll at Abama. One of their custom-designed villas was awarded Second Place in the 2018-2020 Architecture Awards given out by the Tenerife College of Architects last year, and their Bellevue Villas, also located within the resort, were awarded “Best New-Build Homes of the Decade” in 2018 by the same organization.
In addition, they have been awarded numerous prizes, both together and individually. In the 2002-2003 edition of the Manuel de Oraá y Arcocha Regional Architecture Prize, Eustaquio Martínez received an honorable mention. In several other editions of this same award, Virgilio Gutiérrez was recognized with multiple honorable mentions, and won First Place in the 10th edition of the Canary Islands Architecture Prize for his Casa Barrera. In fact, this work was presented as one of the seven buildings proposed by Spain for the EU Mies van der Rohe Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 2003.
Expertos en proyectos de gran envergadura, los arquitectos Virgilio Gutiérrez y Eustaquio Martínez fueron los responsables de Plaza Abama. Junto a Corona-Amaral Arquitectos, otro estudio que ha dejado su huella en Abama, Martínez trabajó en el diseño del aeropuerto Tenerife Norte, obra seleccionada por el Museo de Arte Moderno para representar la nueva arquitectura en España. Conservando parte del mismo lenguaje de esa propuesta, los arquitectos han dotado de vida a Plaza Abama.
Gutiérrez y Martínez han hecho uso de materiales naturales como la piedra y la madera en combinación con el hormigón para crear una estética muy moderna sin perder su esencia tinerfeña. Los grandes volúmenes y los amplios trazos horizontales se hacen eco de las líneas de la propia isla. Los ventanales de suelo a techo y las cuatro plantas de construcción adosada integran Plaza Abama con el terreno sobre el que se asienta y las fenomenales vistas que la rodean. El océano Atlántico, la isla de La Gomera y los greens del campo de golf de Abama crean un panorama que solo compite con las impresionantes puestas de sol que le acompañan.
Los arquitectos pasan por su mejor momento en Abama. Una de sus Custom Villas fue galardonada con el segundo puesto en los Premios de Arquitectura 2018-2020 otorgado por el Colegio de Arquitectos de Tenerife el año pasado, y sus Villas Bellevue, también dentro del resort, fueron premiadas como “Mejores Viviendas de Nueva Construcción de la Década” en 2018 por la misma organización.
Además, han recibido numerosos premios tanto en equipo como individualmente. En la edición 2002-2003 del Premio Regional de Arquitectura Manuel de Oraá y Arcocha, Eustaquio Martínez recibió una mención de honor. En otras ediciones de este mismo premio, Virgilio Gutiérrez fue reconocido con múltiples menciones honoríficas y obtuvo el primer premio en la X edición del Premio de Arquitectura de Canarias por su Casa Barrera. De hecho, esta obra fue presentada como uno de los siete edificios propuestos por España para el Premio Mies van der Rohe de Arquitectura Contemporánea de la UE en 2003.

Mexican interior designer Alejandro Escudero is a creative force who likes to get involved in the design of every aspect of his spaces. He’s responsible for the interiors of the newly opened Plaza Abama, and we sat with him in our gorgeous new reception area to talk about his work.

What does Plaza Abama bring to Abama?
Plaza Abama will be the social center of Abama Resort Tenerife. This is an area where we’ll have restaurants, a Wellness center, swimming pools, and a commercial center.
Today we’re in the reception area, where we’ve sought to align the interiors with the architecture - especially the organic part of the architecture - and make a minimal number of changes to its textures and colors. We have natural wood; the floors are made of granite. The grey and black pieces are like part of the stones, like the lava and everything that makes up the island of Tenerife.
What inspired the design for this project?
We’ve tried to use the language of the island. The colors and materials we are using represent that. There are very few colors, few materials. We have maintained the organic part of the building in this area where we are. We have a golf course, and the golf course runs down organically toward the ocean, and we have tried to make sure this integration is maintained here by using these types of colors and materials. They are materials whose presence you feel. They help integrate the space into the landscape and give it a sense of timelessness.
How have projects like this evolved architecturally over the past few years?
We’ve sought to integrate ourselves not only through the materials but also by centering this incredible view of the island of La Gomera. The majority of the spaces have a relationship with the exterior. They all lead onto terraces or gardens, and the exterior and interior parts of the architecture also relate in the same way, as do the exterior and interior materials.
I think these days a lot of the work done by architecture for resorts of this level is seeking this communication between the exterior and interior spaces and their integration into the natural landscape that surrounds them.
When we finish all the restaurants and commercial areas, we’ll seek this same balance, the same materials, with the same kind of color palette and this natural feel inside and out for the rest of the spaces. We are trying to eliminate the barriers between the interiors and exteriors.
¿Qué aporta Plaza Abama a Abama?
Como centro social de Abama Resort Tenerife, Plaza Abama acogerá restaurantes, un centro de bienestar, piscinas y un centro comercial.
Hoy estamos en la zona de recepción, donde hemos buscado alinear los interiores con la arquitectura -sobre todo en su componente orgánico- y hacer un número mínimo de cambios en texturas y colores. Para conseguirlo mantenemos estructuras en madera natural y suelos en granito. Además, las piezas grises y negras son como parte de las piedras, como la lava y la naturaleza volcánica de la isla de Tenerife.
¿En qué se ha inspirado el diseño de este proyecto?
Hemos intentado utilizar el lenguaje de la isla, es decir, hacer uso de pocos materiales y colores pero que son representativos del paisaje. Hemos mantenido la parte orgánica del edificio en esta zona en la que estamos. Así, el campo de golf desciende orgánicamente hacia el océano y nosotros hemos intentado que esta integración se mantenga aquí utilizando las mismas tonalidades y materiales. Son materiales cuya presencia se siente. Ayudan a integrar el espacio en el paisaje y le dan una sensación de atemporalidad.
¿Cómo han evolucionado arquitectónicamente este tipo de proyectos en los últimos años?
Hemos buscado integrarnos no sólo a través de los materiales sino también dando protagonismo a esta increíble vista de la isla de La Gomera. La mayoría de los espacios tienen relación con el exterior. Todos se comunican con terrazas o jardines y las configuraciones y materiales exteriores e interiores también se relacionan entre sí.
Creo que hoy en día gran parte del trabajo realizado por la arquitectura para complejos de este nivel busca esta comunicación entre exterior e interior y su integración en el paisaje natural que los rodea.
Cuando terminemos todos los restaurantes y las zonas comerciales, buscaremos este mismo equilibrio, los mismos materiales, con el mismo tipo de paleta de colores y esta sensación de naturalidad en el interior y en el exterior para el resto de los espacios. Intentaremos eliminar las barreras entre ambientes.
How would you describe the reception area?
I think this part we’re in right now, as well as the social gathering areas, will be a reference point for where we’ll head in future phases of Abama’s development. The architecture of the social area, which is modern but still very organic, is an architecture of concrete and stones, very characteristic of the island’s current movement. I think the intention is to continue with this image and with this movement as we move ahead. When you arrive here, the environment you’re in is undeniable. You understand the quality that will attend everything you’re going to experience. You’re going to sit in this reception area and have this view of La Gomera, the golf course, the ocean… All that is a hugely important part of this space.
Any design elements you’d particularly like to highlight?
Things like the desks mounted in these massive solid stones refer back, again, to the language of the island. Tenerife’s orography and nature have a tremendous amount to say, and I think that’s what we’re focusing on now. Everything we do here, all the development, communicates in a language rooted in the nature that surrounds us.
I opted for furniture that is lighter, whiter, to let the views and the environment take center stage. The granite floors and the solid Iroco wood hearken back to this same idea of keeping everything as neutral as possible so that what surrounds us is elevated.
What’s important is that these spaces are integrated into the landscape and into Abama. When you walk in the door, you are unmistakably on an island. You have the golf course, you have the ocean. They’re the first things that envelop you and give you a feeling of arrival. They’re already telling you what you’re going to experience.
¿Cómo describiría la recepción?
Creo que esta parte en la que nos encontramos ahora, así como las zonas de reunión social, serán un punto de referencia de hacia dónde nos dirigiremos en futuras fases del desarrollo de Abama. La arquitectura del área social, que es moderna pero muy orgánica, es una propuesta de hormigón y piedras, muy característica del movimiento actual de la isla. Creo que la intención es continuar con esta imagen y con este movimiento a medida que avancemos. Cuando llegas aquí, el ambiente de tranquilidad en el que te encuentras es innegable. Comprendes la calidad que acompañará todo lo que vas a vivir. Te vas a sentar en esta zona de recepción y vas a tener esta vista de La Gomera, del campo de golf, del océano... Todo eso es una parte enormemente importante de este espacio.
¿Algún elemento de diseño que le gustaría destacar en particular?
Cosas como los escritorios montados en las piedras macizas hacen referencia, de nuevo, al lenguaje de la isla. La orografía y la naturaleza de Tenerife tienen mucho que decir, y creo que en eso nos centramos ahora. Todo lo que hacemos aquí, todo el desarrollo, se comunica en un lenguaje enraizado en la naturaleza que nos rodea.
He optado por un mobiliario más ligero, más blanco, para dejar que las vistas y el entorno sean los protagonistas. Los suelos de granito y la madera maciza de Iroko responden a esta misma idea de mantener todo lo más neutro posible para dar valor a todo lo que nos rodea.
Lo importante es que estos espacios se integren en el paisaje y en Abama. Cuando entras por la puerta, estás inequívocamente en una isla. Tienes el campo de golf, tienes el océano. Son las primeras imágenes que te envuelven y te dan una agradable sensación de bienvenida. Ya te dicen lo que vas a vivir.

But the community’s architects, Coderch Urbanismo y Arquitectura, have also woven Tenerife into their designs. The island’s volcanic nature is represented physically by retaining walls made of native rock, and a terraced design that harmonises with the landscape. And the outdoor illumination is an example of how Tenerife’s long-term strategy has put sustainability at the core of development.
The island is a Starlight Tourism Destination, with privileged atmospheric conditions that make it one of the best places in the world for astronomical observation. Since 1988, the southwest portion of Tenerife has been protected by the “Law of the Skies” and its specific building requirements that minimise light pollution, which can have negative effects on the ecosystem as well as the atmosphere. At Los Jardines de Abama, all the outdoor lighting is in full compliance with the Law of the Skies, and we will continue to prioritise the conservation of this unique corner of the world in every way we can.

Por este motivo desde 1988 la zona suroeste de Tenerife está protegida por la “Ley de Cielos” y sus requisitos específicos de construcción minimizan la contaminación lumínica que puede tener efectos negativos tanto en el ecosistema como en la atmósfera. Para cumplir con la Ley de Cielos y siguiendo nuestro Plan de Sostenibilidad, en Los Jardines de Abama toda la iluminación es de mínimo impacto ambiental. The names of modern architects Virgilio Gutiérrez Herreros and Eustaquio Martínez will always be inextricably linked to the history of Abama Resort. Their emblematic Bellevue villas received the Manuel de Oraá y Arcocha Architecture Prize in 2018 and were named “Best new-build homes of the decade” by the College of Architects of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro. They returned to our resort for the development of Las Villas del Tenis, luxury independent villas with private pools and multiple bedrooms.

With exteriors that face the golf course and an open-plan interior, Las Villas del Tenis’s ultimate objective is to exalt the landscape. The first quarter of 2022 saw the arrival of our newly published Abama Architecture & Lifestyle book, a collaborative homage to the brilliant Canary Islands architects who have made Abama’s residences some of the greatest jewels on Tenerife. With over 200 images by London photographer Marc Goodwin, editing by Christina Johansson and design by Raúl García, the book is as much a work of art as the properties and places it contains. In addition to our Custom Villas, it captures some of our favorite places on the island, from ancient forests to the architecture of La Orotava to the heights of the Teide and the fauna of the Atlantic.

Abama is a project that has grown hand-in-hand with the island’s commitment to sustainable, highquality tourism and development, and the resort would not exist if it weren’t for the invaluable contributions of countless people, including the government, the investors, the architects, the staff, the owners, the visitors, and so many more.
The celebration of our book at Abama was therefore a collective one. We were happy to welcome 81 guests to our launch party at Melvin, including representatives from the government of Guia de Isora, our architects, our owners, media, the Tourism departments of Tenerife and the Canary Islands, the government of Tenerife, associations of architects, hotels, and tourism professionals, and other professional organizations.
Nuestro complejo turístico y residencial ha crecido gracias a la inestimable contribución de instituciones como el Gobierno local e innumerables personas como inversores, arquitectos, trabajadores, propietarios, visitantes y tantos otros que apuestan por un turismo de calidad y un desarrollo sostenible.

We travelled with the book and our architects to the Tenerife Art Space (TEA) on the 22nd of September for a presentation that was attended by local professionals, government representatives, businesspeople, and architects with their eyes on sustainable architecture and its future on Tenerife.
The speakers were three of our top architects: Juan Lima of Coderch Urbanismo y Arquitectura (architects of Las Terrazas de Abama and Los Jardines de Abama); Arsenio Pérez Amaral of Corona-Amaral Arquitectos (Las Atalayas de Abama); and Leonardo Omar of Leonardo Omar Arquitectos (many of Abama’s Custom Villas). The event was covered by Televisión Canaria in a piece highlighting our architects’ and the island Administration’s focus on sustainable construction and tourism on Tenerife.
The panelists discussed the ongoing work of recovering from some of the errors of the past and moving into a future of sustainable architecture on the island. They noted that this will require going back to the island’s roots, to sustainability practices employed in construction hundreds of years ago, when dwellings were made to fit the landscape rather than the landscape to the dwellings. The philosophy also includes the selection of materials and the social sustainability of hiring locally and building in a way that positively affects the community.
El 22 de septiembre viajamos con nuestro libro al Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) para una presentación sobre arquitectura sostenible y su futuro en Tenerife. Al evento asistieron profesionales locales, representantes de la administración, empresarios y estudios de arquitectura.
Los ponentes fueron tres de nuestros principales arquitectos: Juan Lima, de Coderch Urbanismo y Arquitectura (creadores de Las Terrazas de Abama y Los Jardines de Abama); Arsenio Pérez Amaral, de Corona-Amaral Arquitectos (responsable de Las Atalayas de Abama); y Leonardo Omar, de Leonardo Omar Arquitectos (al frente de muchas de las Custom Villas de Abama). The 9th of September we hosted Abama Evolution at Melvin by Martín Berasategui, launching the new gastronomic season. Guests were the first to try Melvin’s autumn menu and meet new Head Chef Sergio Fuentes. We were delighted to welcome local figures, press, and several of our owners to this celebration of Melvin’s constant quest to innovate.
Bajo el nombre Abama Evolution, el restaurante Melvin by Martín Berasategui inauguró su nueva temporada gastronómica el 9 de septiembre. Los invitados fueron los primeros en probar su menú de otoño y en conocer al nuevo jefe de cocina, Sergio Fuentes. Estuvimos encantados de recibir a personalidades locales, a la prensa y a varios de nuestros propietarios en esta celebración de la constante búsqueda de innovación de Melvin.
Fuentes is no stranger to forward thinking in fine dining, having worked under Martín Berasategui at his twoMichelin-star M.B and under Eneko Atxa at Azurmendi, which holds three Michelin stars. But for the past five years, Fuentes has been the sous chef at Melvin, uniquely positioning him to adapt the menu without breaking the continuity of the luxury restaurant’s style and service. He is particularly interested in the rapport between staff and clients, seeking out ways for the servers and sommelier to enter into a personalised dialogue with guests and create a sublimely enjoyable dining experience.

Like many beautiful islands around the world, Tenerife’s economy is buttressed by the tourism industry. It is by far the largest economic sector and employs, directly and indirectly, the largest number of people. Supporting tourism is an uncontested necessity. Tenerife’s forward-thinking government has, however, made many careful assessments of international best practices, and has opted to pursue sustainable tourism development with quality and environmental conservation at its core.
Those charged with putting this development into practice aren’t only public-sector employees. Privatesector tourism businesses must commit themselves as well. There is plenty that can be done to support social sustainability by providing steady employment while also putting environmental sustainability practices in place.
The leader of this charge at Abama is Mariana Zúñiga, our HR and Corporate Social Responsibility Director. She is the author of our annual Abama Sustainability Plan, which has taken a hard look at every division of the resort and set sustainability objectives and tasks for each. She also organized staff training with the Foundation Rumbo Ziday, an organization specialized in ecotourism and sustainability, to further Abama’s understanding of how to make positive contributions to the island’s ecosystem. Zúñiga’s plans are as ambitious as they are innovative; some of them have included using natural fertilizers and water-conserving vapor transmission systems on the golf course, going paperless in our all-suite five-star hotels, emphasizing local hiring practices, incorporating compostable amenities, and using as many local suppliers as possible. All the elements of the Sustainability Plan are designed to be in line with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda goals.
Al igual que sucede en muchas islas del mundo, la economía de Tenerife se sustenta en la industria del turismo. Es, con diferencia, el mayor sector económico y el que emplea, directa e indirectamente, al mayor número de personas. El apoyo al turismo es una necesidad indiscutible. Sin embargo, el gobierno tinerfeño, con visión de futuro, ha evaluado cuidadosamente las mejores prácticas internacionales y ha optado por un desarrollo turístico sostenible, con la calidad y la conservación del medioambiente en su centro.
Los encargados de poner en práctica este desarrollo no son sólo las instituciones públicas. Las empresas turísticas del sector privado también deben comprometerse. Es mucho lo que se puede hacer para apoyar el desarrollo social proporcionando un empleo estable, al tiempo que se ponen en marcha prácticas de sostenibilidad medioambiental.

We are extremely proud to announce that for her tremendous efforts in this area, Zúñiga has been named the Tenerife Ambassador to the Island Innovation organization. This global network of island representatives exists to promote creative approaches to stalling climate change and supporting environmental sustainability and island prosperity all over the world.
Las Terrazas de Abama Suites has been granted Biosphere Certified status by the Responsible Tourism Institute, and it is our intention to continue applying for environmental certifications that demand ever higher standards of sustainability. We already hold environmental ISO:14001 and EMAS certifications for the hotel as well as the ISO:9001 for Quality Management.
The installation of a water ionizer system is the latest in a series of choices at the hotel designed to keep us moving forward. Our ongoing Sustainable Suites Project is another of our initiatives. One by one, we are making every aspect of our guests’ quarters more sustainable, from installing flowmeters, smart and energy-efficient appliances, low-consumption lightbulbs and motion sensors to establishing improved linen and towel reuse policies.
The amenities our guests enjoy are locally produced, we have gone completely paperless, both within our suites and for the checkout process, and our coffee capsules are compostable. We promote recycling and reuse by having our providers pick up empty containers and demand that these be recyclable, as well as providing separated recycling deposits for glass, plastics, and paper. Drip irrigation in our gardens and solar panels were installed during the initial construction. We have also recently begun using an electronic lock system, eliminating the need for plastic keys and allowing guests to open their rooms from their mobiles.

Uno a uno, estamos haciendo más sostenibles todos los aspectos de las habitaciones: desde la instalación de caudalímetros, electrodomésticos inteligentes y energéticamente eficientes, bombillas de bajo consumo y sensores de movimiento, hasta el establecimiento de políticas de reutilización de ropa de cama y toallas.
Los servicios de los que disfrutan nuestros huéspedes son de producción local, hemos eliminado completamente el papel, tanto en nuestras suites como en el proceso de pago, y nuestras cápsulas de café son compostables. Fomentamos el reciclaje y la reutilización haciendo que nuestros proveedores recojan los envases vacíos y exigiendo que sean reciclables, además de ofrecer depósitos de reciclaje separados para el vidrio, los plásticos y el papel. A esta política se suma el riego por goteo de nuestros jardines y los paneles solares que ya se habían instalado durante la construcción inicial. También hemos empezado a utilizar recientemente un sistema de cerraduras electrónicas que elimina la necesidad de llaves de plástico y permite a los huéspedes abrir sus habitaciones desde el móvil.

We asked Udi Radomsky, Senior Creative Lead, and Damon Martin, Head of Music at Music Concierge, to answer a couple of questions about the principles that have guided the project:

How do you go about shaping the sound for a destination?
Every destination is different, with its own unique character, and we use our consultation process to dig into the elements of that special character. Inspiration for shaping a property’s sound can come from many sources: audience demographics, interior design, location, and the overall brand, among others.
What were some of the main points of inspiration when you visited Abama for the first time?
The incredible views had a big impact on me. I remember sitting having breakfast, looking out over the ocean, and thinking how it was vital that the music complemented that experience. The island itself is a major inspiration too. We want to ensure that the music allows guests to feel like they’re somewhere unique and intriguing and not back in Europe.
What does sound contribute to your memories and experience?
Hearing is the sense that affects your experience more than any other. Sound can trigger memories, increase or decrease your heart rate and influence your behaviour. The music curated for Abama is designed to enhance the scene, the mood, and the ambience, contributing to an unforgettable experience. We take the time to create soundtracks that will be memorable and weave in seamlessly with the guest journey, full of surprises and moments of delight.
¿Cómo se configura el sonido de un destino?
Cada destino es diferente, con su propio carácter, y mediante nuestro propio proceso de consulta profundizamos en los elementos de ese carácter especial. La inspiración para dar forma al sonido de un establecimiento puede provenir de muchas fuentes: el perfil del público, el diseño interior, la ubicación y la marca en general, entre otras.
¿Qué aspectos de Abama te sirvieron de inspiración cuando visitaste el resort por primera vez?
Las increíbles vistas me impactaron mucho. Recuerdo que me senté a desayunar mirando al océano y pensé que era vital que la música complementara esa experiencia. La propia isla también es una gran inspiración. Queremos asegurarnos de que la música permita a los huéspedes sentir que están en un lugar único e intrigante y no en Europa.
¿Qué aporta el sonido a tus recuerdos y experiencia?
El oído es el sentido que más afecta a la experiencia. El sonido puede desencadenar recuerdos, aumentar o disminuir el ritmo cardíaco e influir en el comportamiento. Abeautiful day greeted us for our golf tournament, for which we were delighted to host 75 owners and friends on our Dave Thomas golf course. Decked in Abama Owners Cup polos made especially for the occasion, players competed in two categories of Stableford individual: the first for handicaps between 0 and 18 and the second between 18.5 and 36. The winners of the categories were, respectively, Thomas Maurovich and Alexandra Wagner. Hole 10 provided a brief respite from play, with tapas from Montesano, a selection of wines from the Bodegas of Perelada & Chivite, and design and furniture by Garden Design.

Those who preferred a more gentle start to the day joined us in the Abama Event Garden for a beginners wellness practice and family yoga session with Mili Gentile. Gentile is one of our favourite yoga and breathwork experts who has worked with us on a number of our Wellness Weekends. She owns Moksha Yoga Tenerife and runs numerous training programs for yoga teachers on the island.

Given the environment surrounding Abama, marine conservation is one of our top sustainability priorities at the resort. The corridor between Tenerife and La Gomera was named Europe’s first Whale Heritage Site in January 2021, and the cetacean population’s presence is dependent upon their continuing to find a peaceful environment and plentiful food in the area.
Government action to support this natural resource is being buttressed by private businesses and individuals that are raising citizen awareness and a sense of personal responsibility and agency in the protection and preservation of our environment.
One such group is Oris watches, who has worked for years with Tenerife-born Francis Pérez, an award-winning marine photographer. They offered a presentation to our owners that was informative and filled with practical suggestions for how to help.

Aforerunner in agricultural techniques for the production of organic fruit in Tenerife, La Calabacera counts Michelin restaurants, 5-star hotels, local markets and individuals looking for the best natural ingredients among its many customers. This organic farm has worked closely with Abama to promote healthy habits among our guests and owners, preparing recipes and participating in activities during our Abama Wellness Weekends.
La Calabacera hosted 84 of our owners for the Back to the Roots gastronomic experience on the first night of the Owners Cup, where guests enjoyed a show cooking demonstration with fresh products from the farm, then dined on the results while watching a presentation by Canary Islands folk instrumental and dance troupe Samara.

Saturday morning we moved over to Abama Tennis, where our professional-grade courts hosted a great friendly match between former World Singles No.5 Henri Leconte and former World Doubles No.3 and Olympic medalist Marc López, battling it out against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. After the Expo, our owners had a chance to come down from the stands and take the court themselves to spar with the former pros.

The Brazilian music and ‘60s vibe were the perfect complement to the label’s swimwear and accessories for men and women, plus cocktails provided by Melvin.

Danny G. Martinez accompanied him on guitar. Mr. Izquierdo has performed in multiple international cities and has published three solo discs comprising more than one hundred titles scored and edited specifically for his instrument.
Dinner was catered by El Draco, one of the most renowned traditional restaurants on the island. The Canary Islands dishes made with local products included fish stew and roast suckling pig.

Some of these instruments have been described as far back as the Shang Dynasty of ancient China.

This year we introduced a new set of activities, Abama Wellness Weekends, a complimentary service for our residents and hotel guests. Held over 5 long weekends throughout the year, these multiple-session events were themed around the five Ayurvedic elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether, with each weekend centered around a different yoga or breathing practice.
We were fortunate to welcome some of Tenerife’s best wellness and meditation experts as guides for our participants, including Mili Gentile, Danah Blanco, Raquel González, and Devi Pereyra.
En Abama nos tomamos muy en serio el bienestar porque sabemos que va mucho más allá de tomarse un descanso consciente. Pasa por dejarse guiar por un ritmo natural, saborear comidas saludables, renovar la energía y, lo que es más importante, recoger lecciones de vida de prácticas ancestrales que te acompañan incluso después de la estancia en el resort.

Opened in 2018, the Kids Camp was designed to give children the holidays of their dreams at one of the best resorts in Spain, filled with activities, new friends, excursions, and the wonders of Tenerife.
This inviting space, protected from the sun by our tented cabins, is located in the Abama Stadium, its lush green grass the setting for outdoor creative play. A zip line, garden planters, a sandy area for water games, picnic and ping pong tables, and porches complete the facilities, while large tables provide room for any indoor activities the children choose.
“The concept of the Abama Kids Camp,” says Director Susana Budé, “goes beyond what other resorts offer. This is a program in which education and entertainment come together in a program that explores the culture and nature of the island. Free play is good, but children are hungry for knowledge when it’s presented to them in an engaging way.”
Some of the most popular activities have included dinosaur discovery, cooking workshops, learning Canary Islands legends, making volcanoes that erupt, experiments with magnets and electricity, using microscopes, karaoke, learning about Canary Islands animals, and detective games.
The Kids Camp always has a special program around the holidays, so if you‘re planning on being at Abama at the end of the year, keep a look out!
Inaugurado en 2018, el Kids Camp fue diseñado para que los niños pasen las vacaciones de sus sueños en uno de los mejores resorts de España, lleno de actividades, nuevos amigos, excursiones y las maravillas de Tenerife.
Este acogedor espacio, protegido del sol por nuestras cabañas en forma de carpa, está situado en el Estadio Abama, y su exuberante césped es el escenario para el juego creativo al aire libre. Una tirolina, jardineras, una zona de arena para juegos de agua, mesas de picnic y ping pong, y porches completan las instalaciones, mientras que grandes mesas dan cabida a diversas actividades interiores.
Su directora, Susana Budé, explica que “el concepto de Abama Kids Camp va más allá de lo que ofrecen otros complejos. Es un programa en el que la educación y el entretenimiento se unen en un programa que explora la cultura y la naturaleza de la isla. El juego libre es bueno, pero los niños están ávidos de conocimientos cuando se les presentan de forma atractiva”.

This October, Abama Golf hosted the WCGC Sports Legends Cup. This invitation-only tournament brought together numerous celebrities from different sports, including football players Steve Staunton, Nuno Valiente, and Carlos Santillana, golfer and four-time European Tour champion Eddie Pollard, and volleyball star Giovane Gávio.
We held a kickoff reception at Las Terrazas de Abama, welcoming the participants to this week of lively competition on Tenerife.

Con un evento de bienvenida en Las Terrazas de Abama se dio inicio a esta semana de animada competición en Tenerife.
Abama Golf, a Golf Digest Editors’ Choice Award winner now for four years running, was also the first golf course in Spain to receive the IAGTO quality certification from the World Organization of Golf Tour Operators. In 2017, it was the first course on Tenerife to be EMAS certified by the European Union, and it holds an ISO:14001 environmental certificate. Most recently, it has been named Biosphere Committed by the Responsible Tourism Institute. Abama Golf uses paper that comes from certified sustainable forests, and is one of the only golf courses in Spain whose Maintenance Team is developing an innovative fertilization system based on natural products.

More than 6,000 meters in length and with a high point at 315 meters above sea level, its jaw-dropping views are as compelling an attraction as the course itself. With an elevation grade of 14-15%, playing with a buggy is obligatory, but there is a fleet of GPS-equipped electric vehicles at the ready that come with their own water coolers and detailed information about each hole.

How many people work on the Abama Golf maintenance team?
There are 16 people that work on the team. I’m the one that’s been here the longest. I started in January of 2002.
What are your principal tasks?
We work from 6:30 am to 2:30 in the afternoon. We water the course and rake the bunkers before the first tee time at 8 am. Then we do whatever grass or other maintenance is required so the players find the courses in perfect condition. After we mow the course, we have a look at the work and make sure there aren’t any irregularities in terms of missed spots or uneven grass length. If there are, we do maintenance on that machine to fix the problem and prepare it to go out the next day. We also do regular maintenance checks on the irrigation system, fertilization,

¿Cuántas personas trabajan en el equipo de mantenimiento de Abama Golf?
Hay 16 personas que trabajan en el equipo y yo soy el que más tiempo lleva porque empecé en enero de 2002.
¿Cuáles son sus principales tareas?
Trabajamos desde las 6:30 hasta las 2:30 de la tarde. Regamos el campo y rastrillamos los búnkeres antes de la primera salida a las 8 de la mañana. Luego hacemos el mantenimiento de la hierba o de otro tipo que sea necesario para que los jugadores encuentren los campos en perfecto estado. Después de cada corte del campo, echamos un vistazo al trabajo y nos aseguramos de que no haya irregularidades en cuanto a puntos perdidos o longitudes de césped desiguales. What maintenance investments have been made this year?
The main investment this year was new equipment for the upkeep of the course. On the one hand we needed to replace machines that were old and no longer functioned optimally, or were very slow, and we also needed certain machines for tasks that we haven’t been able to do up until now. For example, we now have a tractor designed specifically for decompacting and aerating the rough and the fairway. We purchased John Deere tractors that meet all the EU environmental sustainability standards and are known for their engines’ low fuel consumption and minimal noise. This is part of a four-stage improvement program we began in 2021.
Can you tell us a bit about Abama Golf’s innovative fertilization system?
It’s an organic system. I did a training course at the University of La Laguna that was for people working in agriculture. So I’ve tried to extrapolate all this knowledge from agriculture and apply it to golf. I believe we’re the only course in Spain that does it. We use all our plant refuse - grass, palm fronds, plant leaves - plus algae and other natural materials and oxygenate it so good bacteria grow within the mix. Then we enrich it with other fermented plant extracts that we also produce here ourselves. Aloe vera is one of the ingredients, and it helps to heal wounds. It works on plants too: we cut this grass every day, and the aloe prevents the grass from turning yellow. Fern is a natural insecticide, and that’s in there. So is nettle, which has lots of potassium. So those are just a few examples of the natural elements available to us that do our job better than chemical pesticides can, and without harming the environment.

¿Qué inversiones de mantenimiento se han hecho este año?
La principal inversión de este año ha sido la adquisición de nuevos equipos para el mantenimiento del campo. Por un lado necesitábamos sustituir máquinas que eran viejas y ya no funcionaban de forma óptima, o eran muy lentas, y también necesitábamos ciertas máquinas para tareas que hasta ahora no podíamos hacer. Por ejemplo, ahora tenemos un tractor diseñado específicamente para descompactar y airear el rough y la calle. Hemos comprado tractores John Deere que cumplen todas las normas de sostenibilidad medioambiental de la UE y son conocidos por su bajo consumo de combustible y el mínimo ruido de sus motores. Esto forma parte de un programa de mejora en cuatro fases que iniciamos en 2021.
¿Puede hablarnos un poco del innovador sistema de fertilización de Abama Golf?
Es un sistema orgánico. Gracias a un curso de formación en la Universidad de La Laguna dirigido a trabajadores de la agricultura he podido extrapolar estos conocimientos para aplicarlos al golf. Creo que somos el único campo en España que lo hace. Utilizamos todos nuestros residuos vegetales -hierba, hojas de palmeras, hojas de plantas- así como algas y otros materiales naturales y los oxigenamos para que crezcan bacterias buenas dentro de la mezcla. Luego la enriquecemos con otros extractos vegetales fermentados que también producimos aquí. Por ejemplo, es bien sabido que el aloe vera ayuda a curar las heridas. Pues bien, también funciona en las plantas: cortamos este césped todos los días y el aloe evita que la hierba se vuelva amarilla. Otros ejemplos pueden ser el helecho como insecticida natural o la ortiga que tiene mucho potasio. Así que estos elementos naturales, entre muchos otros, los tenemos a nuestra disposición y hacen su trabajo mejor que los pesticidas químicos, y sin dañar el medio ambiente.
Named Biosphere Committed this year by the Responsible Tourism Institute, Abama Tennis is following in the footsteps of our golf department by offering professional facilities and new improvements every year.
We’re proud to say these results are paying off. The Tennis Centre hosted two professional tournaments last year, a WTA 250 and an ATP Challenger, and the success of those events created demand for more. At the Carlos Alcaraz press conference held at Abama in November, we were happy to announce our own good news: Abama will host three ATP Challengers in 2023.
Brendan Breen, the Director of the Abama Tennis Academy, noted, “Abama Resort Tenerife has invested in our facilities with the aim of having their excellence increasingly recognized. As a result, the ATP and MEF Tennis Events have chosen to trust us with three ATP Challenger tournaments. We plan to continue organizing great events in the future and improving them every time.”
The co-founder of MEF Tennis Events, Marcello Marchesini, added, “Last season a number of players asked us if we could organize more tournaments on Tenerife. It’s proof of the great work that was carried out and the spectacular location.”
The first tournament will be an ATP Challenger 100 between the 15th and the 22nd of January, and the other two tournaments will be ATP Challenger 75s, between the 29th and the 5th of February and the 5th and the 12th of February.

Estamos orgullosos de decir que estos resultados están dando sus frutos. El Centro de Tenis acogió dos torneos profesionales el año pasado, un WTA 250 y un ATP Challenger, y el éxito de esos eventos creó la demanda de más. En la conferencia de prensa de Carlos Alcaraz celebrada en Abama en noviembre, nos sentimos muy complacidos de anunciar nuestras propias buenas noticias: Abama acogerá tres ATP Challengers en 2023.

Abama’s first foray into the Tenerife nautical world proved a success in the months of September and October 2022 as our boat, the Abama Resort Tenerife, came away with wins in its class in the top three Canary Islands regattas of the season. It began in September with a win at the XXVIII Infantas de España Canary Islands regatta.
La primera incursión de Abama en el mundo náutico tinerfeño resultó ser todo un éxito. Durante los meses de septiembre y octubre de 2022 nuestro barco, el Abama Resort Tenerife, se alzó con victorias en su categoría en las tres primeras regatas canarias de la temporada. Las buenas noticias comenzaron en septiembre con el primer lugar en la XXVIII Regata Infantas de España Islas Canarias.
This event, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Tenerife, by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, was a qualifier for the Princesa de Asturias and Canary Islands regattas the weekend of the 28th of October. We participated in those races and were rewarded with the triple titles for the season. Congratulations to our team! Our class ORC 3 boat was skippered by veteran Lucio Pérez, a renowned innovator in his field, and his 10-person crew.
We had a wonderful time in the Abama Spaces at the races, whose incredible interiors were designed by BD Canarias, and where we welcomed event attendees with exclusive refreshments from Perelada. They were the site of much celebration with our winning team after the awards ceremonies, accompanied by a live string quartet.
Este evento, organizado por el Real Club Náutico de Tenerife, delegación de la Real Federación Española de Vela, era clasificatorio para las regatas Princesa de Asturias y Canarias del fin de semana del 28 de octubre. Participamos en dichas regatas y nos alzamos con el triplete de la temporada. ¡Enhorabuena a nuestro equipo! Nuestro barco de la clase ORC 3 estaba capitaneado por el veterano patrón, Lucio Pérez -reconocido por su espíritu innovador- y guiado por una tripulación de 10 personas.
Nos lo pasamos muy bien en los Espacios Abama de las regatas cuyos increíbles interiores fueron diseñados por BD Canarias, y en los que recibimos a los asistentes al evento con bebidas refrescantes exclusivas de Perelada. Pudimos celebrar con nuestro equipo ganador después de la entrega de premios, acompañados de un cuarteto de cuerda en directo.
