Retail Store Car Park LED Upgrade - Case Study

About Our Client

Abacus Lighting supplied main contractor Vinci Construction, with the Orion Pro LEDs for Curry’s. The featured Curry’s retail store is located in Mansfield. The brand is a prominent electrical retailer in the UK market that specialises in consumer electronics and household appliances.

Over the years, Curry’s has built a reputation for providing quality products and exceptional customer service, making it a trusted name in the retail sector.

The Challenge

Curry’s Mansfield had their car park lighting supplied by Abacus several years ago. They wanted to upgrade to energy-efficient LED lights to increase brightness, improve safety, and reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs.

The goal was to enhance the customer experience with a well-lit car park for safe daytime and night-time shopping.

The existing lighting system, although sufficient, did not meet the desired lighting levels for optimal safety and visibility. Curry’s aimed to improve the lighting quality in their car park to create a brighter and more secure environment for both customers and staff.

The Solution

Abacus Lighting provided the perfect solution by replacing the old Orion 2 luminaires with the Orion Pro LED through a direct retrofit. The Orion Pro LED achieves a new standard of lighting levels while being significantly more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Compared to the older luminaires, the Orion Pro LED offers substantially lower power consumption, resulting in reduced energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint. Additionally, the Orion Pro LED requires less maintenance due to its longer lifespan and greater durability, leading to further cost savings over time. The improved efficiency and reliability of the Orion Pro LED ensures that the car park remains well-lit and secure for customers and staff, thereby enhancing overall safety and convenience.

The Orion Pro LED luminaires provide superior light quality, which improves visibility and enhances the aesthetic appeal of the car park. This upgrade aligns with Curry’s’ broader sustainability goals and their strategy to implement greener technologies across their operations. The shift to LED lighting also supports Curry’s’ environmental commitments by significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with their energy use.

Conclusion

Rail Freight Safety Improvement Programme Case Study

FSIP Rail Project - Quartz Evo LED Bollard

Abacus Lighting has successfully secured a contract for a ten-site rail scheme as part of the Freight Safety Improvement Programme (FSIP).

The project involved lighting design by CBG Rail, supply of the Quartz Evo Bollards by Abacus Lighting, and installation by KH Electrical for Dyer & Butler. Approximately 350 Quartz Evo Glassfibre Reinforced Polyester (GRP) LED bollards were installed across the 10 sites.

In addition, Abacus Lighting supplied and installed 8 raise and lower (RL) lighting columns alongside the Quartz Evo bollards to minimise line closure time when access was available during possession.

Non-Conductive GRP

The Greatest Bollard Spacing in the industry that still achieves Lighting Safety Standards

Quartz Evo LED Bollards: Saving Time, Money and Energy

KH Electrical installed 350 Quartz Evo LED bollards to ensure compliance with current lighting safety standards for workers using the GRP walkways near live rails.

The majority of the Quartz Evo GRP bollards were asymmetrical, with a few symmetrical versions as per CBG Rail’s lighting design specifications.

The Quartz Evo bollards were chosen for their superior performance, achieving an average 10LUX at a spacing of 12.5m between bollards. In comparison, competitor products could only achieve 8m spacings.

The unmatched spacing between Quartz Evo bollards results in significant time, money, and energy savings. This is not only evident during installation but continues throughout the product’s lifespan, as it reduces energy consumption.

Greater spacings between bollards mean fewer units to install, resulting in quicker installation and reduced energy consumption. Additionally, the bollards were fixed directly to the GRP walkways, eliminating the need for additional ground works.

Why Specify The Quartz Evo GRP Bollard?

The Abacus Quartz Evo GRP bollard was chosen for its capability to achieve greater spacings between bollards, between 12 - 15m, while still meeting safety standards due to its unmatched light distribution.

The Quartz Evo bollard is available in either non-conductive GRP or a combination of an alloy head with a steel body, with the alloy heads being suitable for retrofitting onto existing steel bodies. Retrofitting the head is quick and easy with just four fixings securing the head to the body.

The Quartz Evo can be specified in symmetrical or asymmetrical lighting options with root or flange plate mounting. The robust IP66 Quartz Evo is relatively lightweight at 15.2kg, vandal-resistant, and has a quarter-turn closing mechanism on the wide access door for ease of installation and maintenance.

Three Lantern Body Sizes

Optic 01

The 01 optic is for street lighting and is particularly suitable for situations where the installation height and the width of the carriageway ratio is less than 1

Optic 04

The 04 optic is typically used to provide light for yards, car parks, and urban areas. It is also used on the street when a significant amount of light is needed and the ratio between the depth of the area to be illuminated and the installation height of the light is considerably higher than 1. However, very high levels of lighting are not necessary

EOS LED Lantern - Optic Selection

Optic 02

The 02 optic is suitable for street lighting situations where the installation height and the width of the carriageway ratio is less than 1. It is also appropriate for roads with very high inter-distances and an inter-distance/installation height ratio greater than 5

Optic 05

The 05 optic is for street lighting that can illuminate areas with varying distances and road widths equal to or less than the installation height

The

is

Optic 03

height-to-width ratio is over 0.85. It has a back-flow feature that helps with installations involving outreaches

Optic 06

The 06 optic street lighting system is suitable for illuminating large areas with a ratio of installation height to track width equal to or greater than 1
