Dana Ness, NAAA 2013 President and Bill Lavender

Talking to the first 510G spray pilot In this month’s edition of AgAir Update, you will read about Thaggart Aviation and Rick Lott, the first operation and its pilot to spray with the newly certified H80-powered 510G Thrush. Rick literally flew off in the 510G from its FAA certification ceremony to Thaggart Aviation’s airstrip to fill the aircraft for its first load, cotton defoliate. Now, that’s really a way to breakin a new aircraft. It will never smell the same again! I have known Rick and his dad, Richard (now deceased), for more than three decades. Rick has been “around the patch” a couple of times when it comes to ag spraying. He knows his ag-aircraft, particularly the Thrush. Before Thaggart Aviation bought the 510G, Rick had been flying the 510P. He made no bones about the thrill of working the 510G. Of course, it is an unfair comparison. The 510P and the 510G are two different animals. When you take a proven fuselage, like the 510P’s, and lighten it almost 300 pounds forward of the CG and add 50+ SHP, even more on a hot day, it is no wonder the 510G is a real performer. Horsepower is great, you never have enough. However, I believe the biggest game changer with the 510G was the fuselage changes. Three hundred pounds is a significant weight when it is piled on the front of the CG limits. Any weight forward or aft of CG affects the flying characteristics of the aircraft. Removing 300 pounds is a lot and evidently affected the aircraft in a positive way. To compensate for the removal of the ballast weight, the engine mount was extended about 18 inches. All this has added up to one excellent flying machine.

I flew the first experimental H80 510 Thrush two years ago. Then, it wasn’t called the 510G and it didn’t have the four-blade propeller. Later, the Thrush factory did some “secret” tweaking to the aircraft and replaced the three-blade propeller that is used on the PT6A-34AG with the four-blade Hartzell. I flew it again last year after these modifications, this time filling the hopper with water and the fuel tanks with Jet-A. The changes were significant. I have been flying turbine Thrushes since 1980 when I bought and operated a PT6A-11AG on a 400-gallon, rag tail Thrush. It was serial #1 for the -11AG series of factory-built Thrushes. To me, it was underpowered, taking too much runway with a load. However, once in the air, it flew great. We also had a 1978 factory-built, 400-gallon, rag tail Thrush with a PT6A-34AG engine. It for sure was not underpowered; a real delight to fly with its stock, “short” wings. Flying the 510G reminds me of flying the 400-gallon, -34 Thrush; a great handling aircraft. Be sure to read the article on this month’s cover of AgAir Update. I know you’ll find it informative. keep turning…

not sure who might have some install pics of something lately. I have an M3 in a Super Cub, but need something more recent. Greg Guyette Scottsdale, AZ

Hello Greg; Missed ya in Texas. Hope to see ya in LA next week. I am familiar with this aircraft. I have even made an evaluation flight in one, maybe 15 years ago. However, I’ve never seen any type of GPS installed in one, as it would not be normal for an ag-operator to use one for spraying.

along came the turbine, which the factory used the PT6A-34AG and renamed the aircraft the Cresco. However, other operators converted their piston aircraft to use the Walter and the TPE-331 engines. The aircraft is used primarily in NZ, even still today. It is ideally suited for the short strips and fertilizer jobs on rugged terrain found in NZ. I believe it may have been assembled or imported into the U.S. for a very short time (guessing here) but did not take hold. There are some being used in Australia. You being a liquid pattern analysis professional, no wonder you have not heard of the Cresco, since it is a dry machine, often spreading fertilizer without a spreader! I have copied my contact in NZ, Mike Feeney, who has logged many hours in one of these aircraft. I am sure he’ll correct any mistakes I just made. You can also search AAU archives on the web for articles over the years about the Cresco. You can also Google either FU-24 or Cresco for more details.

The first H80powered 510G goes to work by Graham Lavender It is sometimes said when one door closes, another one opens. This timehoned cliché provided little comfort for Thaggard Aviation when the proverbial first door closed from a 2010 accident involving their -10 TPE331 Thrush. Then, Thaggard aviation’s chief pilot Rick Lott made a happenstance visit to the Thrush Aircraft factory that opened the other door, the door that allowed Thaggard Aviation to buy the first FAA certified GE H80-powered 510G Thrush. Rick Lott has flown ag his entire life in South Georgia. A second generation agpilot, Rick has close ties with the Thrush brand. Rick took delivery of the first 510G Thrush in October, 2012 at its certification ceremony (see AAU Dec 2012) in Albany, Georgia, then flew it 20 miles directly to Thaggard Aviation’s loading pad in Doerun, Georgia, where within two hours Rick was defoliating cotton.

175-gallon fuel load. Under the same flying conditions as with the 510P, he can break ground significantly sooner with the 510G than with the 510P. Evidently, the extra SHP and nearly 300 pounds less fuselage weight is working in the 510G’s favor.

cotton defoliation work. Rick feels the extra speed and the aircraft flying “on the step” allows for him to increase the swath width from 70 feet, like used on the 510P, to 75 feet for the 510G. The aircraft is flown with a boom height of 12-15 feet above the canopy of the crop.

The airstrip has an incline with trees not too far from the end, requiring a positive climb rate upon departure. Rick explains that the H80 is 15-20 MPH faster than the 510P at the same fuel burn. So, either go faster or power back to save fuel and work the a/c at the same speeds as the 510P. He prefers to work the 510G faster.

Recently, AgAir Update was invited to attend a sales demo of 510G and 510P Thrush aircraft at Souther Field Aviation in Americus, Georgia. A South Carolina operator approached Frankie Williams at the NAAA convention about possibly buying a couple of Thrush Aircraft. From that meeting, a demo was arranged.

Even at faster airspeeds, the standard boom and nozzle arrangement proves to provide an even spray pattern for

The demo included a flight of the 510P and the 510G. The customer was real pleased with the flight characteristics

Thaggard Aviation uses the same boom set up on the H80 as they did with a PT6A-34AG 510P they had been using; 32 CP11Ts, 16 per boom with none under the belly on the T-boom and none within the first two inboard holes of the booms. This put the CPs about 18” out from the fuselage before starting with the nozzles that are evenly spaced to 3/4s of the wingspan of the aircraft. Rick reports the aircraft has no problem departing from his 2000-foot airstrip loaded with 450 gallons and about

of the 510G. The customer commented on the speed of the aircraft and the lightness of the controls. During the demo, a discussion took place over the excitement for the next generation of the 510G; the dual cockpit version which is scheduled to be certified in spring of 2013. Rick, who is also a sales representative for Souther Field Aviation, the Southeast Thrush dealer, explained to client and his pilot how a Thrush flew differently than any other aircraft. “You have to let the aircraft do the work for you. Look at those ailerons. You can’t fight them all day. You can fly this aircraft without ever moving the stick more than the radius of a sausage plate Just let the airplane take the lead,” explained Rick. “You simply cannot manhandle a Thrush.” Souther Field Aviation was recently appointed by Thrush Aircraft as a dealer for the southeastern United States. In conjunction with that, Frankie hired Rick to help him sell the Thrush product line, including particularly the 510G, considering Rick’s hands-on experience

Rick Lott explains advantages of the Thrush 510G to an attentive group of onlookers. as being the first ag-pilot to put the 510G to work. Souther Field Aviation has delivered multiple new Thrush Aircraft including two 510Gs to farmers in South Georgia. The base retail list price for a new 510G

Thrush is $898,975 USD. The engine has a 3,600-hour TBO with takeoff engine rating of 800 SHP above 100° F. At the turn of 2013, Thrush has delivered all 510Gs manufactured and with further deliveries scheduled for the United States, Canada and Brazil.

Radial engine, this is your life! by Everett Sneed Safety Committee Chairman Circa July 1975 That mass of metal out on the front of your airplane, lovingly (I hope) referred to at times as “Hunk of Iron”, “Bucket of Bolts”, “Clunk”, and what not, is a delicate piece of machinery and deserves the best possible care and attention. Since it is so necessary for flight, and has been accursed of a large percentage of ag aircraft accidents, I have been moved to take its part and try to explain how an engine would like to be treated. Radial installations on ag aircraft have always been less than satisfactory, especially the larger, more powerful ones. Designed to run in cowling, with baffling to insure even and adequate cooling, they are hung out in the open to cool as they can, and we know this is bound to cause hot spots and uneven expansion and contraction of certain parts of the heads, barrels and pistons. Operating from dirt strips a large part of the time, flying in

the dirtiest part of the atmosphere a few feet off the ground, through dust or chemical spray just dispersed, an engine ingests more foreign matter in a day or two than in many, many days of designed life. So we have just got to treat an engine with a little more respect since we are demanding so much more from it under conditions that were never in the design, installation, and use concept. Where do we start? Well, first just go out and look at your engine. If it’s clean, keep it that way; if it’s dirty, clean it up. I like to use just plain solvent sprayed from a pressure sprayer, like you do your yard work around the house with, let it soak a while and wash down with a hot water pressure washer. This will help remove crud from between the cooling fins and any residual oil or grease the solvent didn’t quite cut loose. There are several good degreasers on the market; if you use one, be sure you know for sure that is will not damage the various metals used in engine construction. Magnesium is susceptible to some cleaners, so watch it.

Now, in this engine washing process, keep it confined to the engine. Don’t go soaking your variable pitch propeller hubs. A piece of plastic tied tightly around the prop blades and behind the hub will keep cleaners and water out of the prop mechanism. Wash the propeller one blade at a time, with the blade down that you’re washing. The hub can be cleaned with WD-40 and clean rag. Now back to the engine—watch it for oil leaks, and stop them. Push rod housings, rocker covers and drain tubes, mag drive seals, sump gaskets, plumbing in general, and a number of things, sooner or later leak a little, but there is no reason to let it keep leaking. A clean engine is going to run better simply because a clean engine cools better. Let’s go inside and clean that up too. Most reputable engine and overhaul and repair shops insist that a majored engine be run on non-detergent oil for at least the first 100 hours, or they won’t warranty that engine. So before you hand that engine, flush out the oil tank, lines, cooler and change the filter cartridge, (if you’re running one) and if you’re not, you should be. Just be sure it’s a legal one. Don’t run a new engine too long on the ground—just enough to check all the systems for leaks and proper function, then button it up and get it in the air for some slow time, but just long enough to make sure all pressures and temperatures are correct, prop governor is right, idle RPM is okay, and everything stays green. Land and recheck for fuel and oil leaks. I like to put at least two

hours on a fresh engine before working it, more if everything isn’t just right; then light loads for a couple more hours. I let the exhaust stack tell me when to put a normal load in the airplane. As long as it runs dark and sooty, the rings haven’t set yet. When it turns a nice shade of grey, the rings have come in and the engine is ready to pull some power. Good oil, changed regularly is a small investment, compared to the cost of replacing an engine, so use it freely and often. Two more elements go through your engine—fuel and air; both should be as clean as possible. Fuel, being more available for quality control, is easier to keep clean. Water and foreign matter is a simple process to remove from gasoline. Draining the sumps and cleaning the finger screens and fuel strainer on the airplane assures clean fuel to the carburetor. Air is the big problem. If you will just multiply the piston displacement by one half the RPM, divide by 1,728, and the volume of air that passes through that old clunk per minute is beyond belief. Then just think of where your engine is getting its air from, and then it isn’t too difficult to understand why the tightest induction system, plus the best filtering available is a must. At best it’s still somewhat deficient. It may also cause you to be more careful where you park while your partner loads, runs up his engine, and takes off; or how quickly you follow him down a dusty runway—not to mention plunging into a dust or spray filled swath run. Oh, you don’t have

Center Boom

time to pay attention to all that? Well, then you can just suffer the consequences. The valve guides will go first and when you see this little puffs of blue smoke coming out the exhaust stack as old Betsy is there idling away, it may be too late to repent of your wrongdoing!! For the sake of keeping the mathematics simple, let’s say and engine has a 6” stroke and is running at 2000 RPM. Each piston is sliding 2000 feet each minute inside a cylinder that may be 200º+C. Now 200 feet per minute is not a blazing speed by any way shape or form, but considering it does it 6” at a time with a sudden stop and start at the top and bottom of each stroke, and since that piston weighs a few pounds, and every two trips, its gets kicked with from 50 to 66 2/3 horses, (depending on the engine) that have pretty hot breath. Then throw in 8 more doing the same thing and you’ve got 18,000 feet of sliding friction to keep under control every minute, not to mention all the twisting, turning, compression, tension and shear forces going on in there. It seems a miracle that it hangs together long enough to get around the pattern. I personally believe that a lot of engine failures are pilot induced. The pilot has to do an awful lot of instrument monitoring, listening and seat of the pants feeling to keep up with what’s going on up front. But to begin with he should know what he’s doing. Throttle benders are more trouble than they are worth. Pilots conscientiously taking care of an engine are a real asset. To be continued, part 2 in March AgAir Update. in my opinion

Trust Many years ago (probably in the early 70s) I was flying in the hills of Mississippi and was approached by a new-to-the-area farmer about spraying his cotton. I helped him off-load his chemicals. Some of it was a very expensive worm ovicide, Galecron. If I recall correctly, Galecron has since been taken off the market because it was found to be a carcinogen. Although I

was busy, I took time to have superfluous chit-chat with him for a few minutes in my small office. I kept waiting for him to leave, but he just sat there. Eventually, I told him I had to get back to work, yet he still he sat there. After loading and fueling my Cessna AgTruck, I asked him if there was anything else I could help him with. His response was something like, “I’m gonna stay right here until I see you put my chemicals in your airplane.” Obviously, this farmer did not trust me. As it turned out, he had only 100 acres of cotton. My airplane was calibrated as close as possible, but I always carried a little extra mix for “clean-up,”

passes and to cover my own swath width misjudgments. On this occasion, I ran out of chemicals a little short of covering his “100 acres”. The same problem occurred a second time the next week. The following week, I mentioned to one of my regular customers who was this new farmer’s neighbor that I had come up short after spraying the cotton. The neighbor asked me how many acres I was trying to spray, to which my reply was “100 acres”. Ironically, the new farmer routinely brought me “a little extra” chemical, just to make it “hotter” than his entomologist had recommended. I have always been (and still am) rather naïve and prone to trust everyone. In reality, this new farmer had about 115 acres. From that point forward, whenever I sprayed his cotton, if I ran out of material 10-15 acres short, I returned to the strip. This new farmer did not trust me. I had given him no reason not to trust me. In My Opinion, during our first meeting when he was observing the loading of the aircraft, he was actually indicating to me he was the untrustworthy one. The moral of the story: “In order to be trusting, you must be trustworthy.” A good reputation is invaluable and is so easy to lose. Whereas, a bad reputation is easy to obtain and very hard to lose.

Aussie aviation industry unites on policy future by Phil Hurst Aviation peak bodies have joined together through the Australian Aviation Associations Forum to release new policies aimed at fostering and promoting aviation in Australia. Chairman of the Forum, Mr. Chris Manning, said that this is a new level of cooperation amongst aviation peak bodies that have identified a range of practical policy initiatives for government and industry. “It has been decades since a single government agency has taken on the role of fostering and promoting aviation in Australia and governance and regulatory arrangements remain at the heart of restraints on aviation jobs and growth,” Mr. Manning said. “At a time when aviation is suffering from pilot and particularly engineer shortages, there is a vacuum of policy aimed at addressing the medium and long term potential of the industry to make an even larger contribution to the economy and to sustaining satisfying careers.

“The Forum policies provide a comprehensive framework covering industry regulation, education and training, manufacturing, technology and taxation that will significantly boost the productivity of the sector. “One of the Forum participants’ greatest concerns is the lack of an equitable government policy aimed at supporting pilot and engineer education and training. HECS is not available to CASA approved flying training schools that provide a critical feeder service to the industry. “Another concern is the current structure of government bodies, where the policy responsibility for developing aviation and removing productivity impediments has been lost. It appears that aviation is not treated as vital national infrastructure with commensurate policy support. “Forum participants recommend the policies to all political parties and look forward to working with government to make

Micron Group has rebranded As part of its strategy to enhance the product offering and strengthen its brand perception, Micron Group has recently undergone a complete rebrand. The rebrand involved a change in trading name, standardizing on product colorways and revising the individual product names. As of January 2013 Micron’s three companies - Micron Sprayers Ltd, Micronair Ltd and Enviromist Industries Pty - will be trading as Micron Group. The decision was made following the Group’s recent restructuring which enabled the companies to capitalise on their combined strengths and consequently strengthen its key Sales, Marketing, R&D and Finance functions. During the restructuring, eight new positions have been created to enable the company to better serve the market. The common name will help Micron Group to enhance its image as a strong player

in the spraying industry and reinforce its global positioning.

Micronair ground products will be marketed under the Micron brand.

In the effort to further consolidate the brand image, the Group’s product colorways and labelling are being standardised. Micron will use one color (green) for its vehiclemounted equipment and hand-held sprayer parts. All atomiser shields including CDA and high flow nozzle models will also be produced in one standard yellow. Micronair atomiser moulded parts will remain red to differentiate between the aerial and ground equipment.

Individual product names have also been revised to reduce the number of brand names for similar type products which will consequently allow Micron Group to better protect its intellectual property. More information on individual product names is available in the News section of Micron’s website www.micron.co.uk.

Additionally, the product family branding is being simplified to make the product offering clearer to the customer. It has been decided that the aerial atomizers and accessories will bear the Micronair family name whereas the remaining product portfolio including hand-held sprayers and applicators, Enviromist vehicle-mounted equipment and former

Commenting on the rebrand, Ausra Landey, Group Marketing Manager at Micron said: “Since Micron’s inception in 1954, the company has grown from a small local company to one of the world’s leading manufacturers servicing a wide range of industries and their varying requirements. We believe that by implementing these branding changes and simplifying our branding structure, we will be able to further strengthen our global brand and make our products clearer to the end user.”

A legacy of leadership NAAA/Syngenta Leadership Training Program Molds Ag Pilots into Leaders One of NAAA’s most valuable and rewarding initiatives is its Leadership Training Program. The program, which Syngenta Crop Protection has generously sponsored since its inception in 1995, has greatly benefitted the association, NAAA members and the agricultural aviation industry by helping individual members strengthen their professionalism, increase their confidence and augment their leadership skills. The NAAA/Syngenta Leadership Training Program—also known by Syngenta as Leadership at Its Best—teaches participants how to effectively communicate with the public, media and government, and use those tools to improve the image of aerial application and serve as strong industry leaders. The training also involves teaching techniques to more effectively run and manage an aerial application business, and to more effectively serve as a leader while serving industry organizations, such as NAAA and state agricultural aviation associations. The 2012-2013 leadership class will complete its training in mid-February during the second half of the Leadership Training Program, held in conjunction with NAAA’s Spring Board Meeting, and when they do it will mean more than 250 participants have benefited from this training in the 18 years it has been offered. Historically, Syngenta has sponsored 14 state/regional association participants, covering their airfare, room and dining expenses, and participants have primarily consisted of ag pilots and operators. Beginning with the 2011– 2012 class, however, Syngenta widened the program by adding two additional spots for representatives of the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association and the WNAAA. All told, 253 agricultural aviation representatives will have participated in the Leadership Training Program by the end of the 2012-2013 program. At a minimum of $3,000 per candidate, Syngenta has contributed approximately $759,000 over the years—almost three-quarters of a million dollars—to help NAAA members become strong representatives and advocates for the industry in their communities, states and in Washington. This incredible investment in the future of the aerial application industry has paid major dividends in the form of positive public relations and advocacy, and by cultivating past, present and future leaders of NAAA.

agairupdate.com

That’s evident by the number of Leadership Training Program graduates currently serving on NAAA’s Board of Directors: 32, including AgAir Update’s Graham Lavender who serves as the Georgia AAA’s state representative (Bill Lavender graduated from the program in 1996). The other 31 LTP grads are either NAAA operator or pilot members and represent two-thirds of the operators and pilots serving on this year’s board. NAAA President Dana Ness and his predecessors, 2012 President Mark Hartz and 2011 President Rick Richter, are among the distinguished alumni who went on to serve as NAAA’s highest elected official. In fact, each of the operators serving on this year’s officer team went through the leadership program. Ness did it in 2003, and Rick Boardman and Brenda Watts, NAAA’s Vice President and Treasurer, respectively, were part of the 2008–2009 LTP class. “There’s no question that the leadership perspective our participants gain in this program has aided our ability to guide NAAA with vision and purpose,” Richter told Thrive magazine for an article in the 4th Quarter 2012 issue of the Syngenta publication. “The Leadership Training Program was a great experience,” Watts added. “It gave me confidence and strengthened my communications skills to serve on the Arkansas AAA Executive Board and to serve as the president for a two-year term. I was able to form lasting friendships from the program, and I continue to use the principles in learned in the program in my new position as treasurer of NAAA.” In addition to serving on NAAA’s board, several LTP graduates are active PAASS presenters and serve on various NAAREF committees. And numerous participants have served as officers of their state/regional agricultural aviation associations. Going through the Leadership Training Program isn’t a prerequisite for association service, but for those who do, there is an implicit understanding that by virtue of NAAA’s and Syngenta’s investment, participants have an obligation to put the knowledge and skills they acquire into action by giving back to the aerial application industry. NAAA would like to extend special thanks to Rex Martin, Syngenta’s head of industry relations, and Steve Powell of Bouvier Kelly who continue to make the Leadership Training

Program a successful experience for all involved. To make it even more valuable, Syngenta looks for ways to enhance the program each year. For example, Martin and Powell added social media training to the curriculum in 2010. With any continuing education and leadership training program, attending class is the easy part, Martin says. “Putting this knowledge into action takes motivation and dedication.” That’s why Syngenta provides ongoing support to LTP graduates, including access to Leadership at Its Best trainers who can help answer their questions if they need to participate in a media interview, for example, or contact a lawmaker. “Leadership at Its Best is an important asset for Syngenta, and we remain committed to partnering with organizations throughout agriculture to support leadership development,” Martin said.

How to Apply The Leadership Training Program is an exciting and a worthwhile opportunity, and being accepted into the program is a prestigious honor. Attendees have ranged from college-age participants to people near retirement age—proof you are never too young or too old to start the journey to becoming a better leader! If you are interested in participating in a future Leadership Training Program, contact your state or regional executive director to request an application. Each state/regional organization can submit one candidate each year. The selection committee, appointed by the NAAA President, chooses the candidates for the coming year. Participants meet in conjunction with the Fall and Spring NAAA Board Meetings. Applications are due in May 10 for the 2013–2014 class and must be submitted on the candidate’s behalf by the association nominating him or her. Flying under the influence Your ability to process information is divided into three stages: stimulus identification (seeing a hazard), response selection (deciding to avoid the hazard), and response execution (veering to avoid the hazard). Driving a car involves a complicated mix of all three. Flying, while exhilarating, is an even more precise, demanding, and unforgiving endeavor. Any factor that impairs your ability to perform the required tasks during the operation of an aircraft is an invitation for disaster. Alcohol, recreational drugs, and even some prescription drugs, are perfect examples of just such a factor. While this problem has been highlighted in commercial aviation, it is not as well documented in the world of general aviation, where a pilot can step into a plane and fly with little to no interaction with other people. There are

There are three things you need to know to help determine your level of alcohol consumption

“But I don’t feel drunk” Fitness to fly goes far beyond making sure you have enough gas in the tank or favorable weather. It means thoroughly assessing your capability to negotiate a safe flight. This includes recognizing the Bloody Mary you had at breakfast, or even the few martinis you had with dinner the night before, could legally and physically impair you from flying, even if you don’t “feel” drunk. The real problem is that quite often people just don’t realize that they have a problem.

There are three things you need to know to help determine your level of alcohol consumption: how to count a standard drink, how alcohol affects your body, and the effects alcohol has on your behavior. For a reference, a standard drink is equal to one 12-ounce beer, 1.5 ounces of liquor, or 5 ounces of standard wine. Be warned: Many mixed drinks (e.g., Long Island Iced Tea) give you far more than just one “drink” in your glass. To factor your BAC, use Figure 1. Keep in mind that the legal limit for intoxication is .08, and that the use of alcohol and drugs by pilots is regulated by 14 CFR section 91.17, which states that no person may operate an aircraft within eight hours of having consumed alcohol, while under the influence of alcohol, or with a BAC of .04 or greater. As for illicit recreational drugs, there is no agreed-upon limit for which impairment has been reliably demonstrated. Some drugs linger in the body for a period of days or weeks, so just don’t do it! When considering how alcohol affects you, at

Self-assessment time Don’t know if you have a problem? You owe it to yourself and to the flying community to find out. Many websites offer quizzes to try and determine your level of consumption, but one good one is www.alcoholscreening.org . This website lets you anonymously click through straightforward questions and then offers guidance based on your honest answers. Dr. Nicholas Lomangino, Deputy Manager for FAA’s Medical Services Division, recommends taking the self-assessment, even if you don’t think you have a problem. You just might be surprised with the results and regardless, the site provides good data to consider for the future. Sabrina Woods is an assistant editor for the FAA Safety Briefing. She spent 12 years in the active duty Air Force where she served as an aircraft maintenance officer and an aviation mishap investigator.

Christians are not perfect in their earthly body “We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do” (Romans 7:14-15).

After Paul became a believer in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior he realized that he fell far short of keeping God’s Ten Commandments perfectly because they judge his attitudes, motives, thoughts and actions. As a Christian Paul wants to

live a perfect life for God and Jesus Christ, but Paul finds out that he cannot live up to the requirements of the Ten Commandments. Paul knows that he is spiritually born again and a new creation in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17), with God’s Holy Spirit dwelling in him (Ephesians 1:13-14). But Paul also recognizes that he still has his old sinful nature that wants its way with his life. Paul realized that there is a battle going on within every Christian between our sinful nature and God’s Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:19). “If I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good (Romans 7:16). It is a glorious experience for a person to believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and have all their sins, past, present and future totally forgiven by God. After becoming a Christian we want to live like Jesus Christ lived, we want to be kind, gentle, loving and forgiving, and love God and love our neighbor like we love our self. But we soon realize that we still have that tendency to get upset and angry, to want things that doesn’t belong to us and we don’t forgive other people like we should. We fail in many of our endeavors to do what is right and good. We can see the right kind of life we should be living, but we realize that we cannot live up to that ideal life

that Jesus Christ lived on this earth. We know that God’s Laws are good, but we cannot live up to their demands. Allowing the Holy Spirit to control our life is the only way we can keep our sinful nature under control (Galatians 5:16). “As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me” (Romans 7:17). Every Christian lives in an unredeemed body with its sinful nature that still has its desires and drives. All Christians will find themselves yielding to the desires of the sinful nature we inherited from Adam—doing those things that we shouldn’t be doing. Someone says a hateful word to us and almost automatically, we come back with a cutting word or comment. We didn’t want to answer that way—it just came out. The second we made our cutting comment we wished we hadn’t said it—the sin nature within us has just had its way with us! The sin nature has to have the last word! David said, “I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue (Psalm 39:1). James wrote, “No person can totally control their own tongue. It is unruly, evil, and full of deadly poison” (James 3:1-11). “For I know that in me (that is, in my sinful nature) nothing good dwells” (Romans 7:18a). Christians need to realize and confess that within our natural self, within your human nature, there is nothing that will meet God’s perfect and holy demands! Christians need to face the facts that we are sinful human beings, and we have absolutely nothing within our self that is holy enough to offer to God! We might look good when we compare our self with other people. But other people are

not the standard—Jesus Christ is the standard. You say, “I know that I am not perfect, but surely there is something good within me”! But the Bible says, “There is no one righteous, not even one...For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:10, 3:23). Christians must depend on God’s Spirit to direct their lives, or we will get into serious spiritual trouble! “For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out” (Romans 7:18b). Christians who believe there is little or no sin within their life are like the self-righteous Pharisee who prayed, “Lord I am glad I am not like the other sinners” (Luke 18:11). Keeping religious rules and traditions only creates selfrighteousness—not God’s righteousness. Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, Standard Ad Junior Page 7.08”w x 9.14”h and mind. And love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 19:36-40). Paul said God’s laws are summed up in the command, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Roman 13:9-10, Galatians 5:14). James said if you want to keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (James 2:7-9). The Ten Commandments are impossible to keep, and so is Jesus’ commandment, “Love your neighbor as yourself!” By faith, allowing the Holy Spirit to rule our life is the only way to please God in our earthly body!

on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12-14). Christians are in a spiritual battle with his/her sinful nature, this sinful world, and satanic powers. The only way we can win this battle is by using God’s spiritual weapons (Ephesians 6:10-18). We study God’s Word, the Bible, and apply it to our everyday life to keep our sinful nature under control (Psalm 119:9-11). Temptations will come into our life, but God will always give us a way out of these temptations (1 Corinthians 10:13). At the end of his life, Paul said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7). Every Christian should live to hear Jesus Christ say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

Arizona PAASS January 14, 2013. The Arizona Agricultural Aircraft Association held its annual meeting and PAASS presentation. Twenty pilots and operators descended on the offices of Custom Farm Services in Stanfield Arizona to take part in the classes and enjoy a few hours of camaraderie with their fellow southwestern ag pilots. John Pew, owner of Custom Farm Services, has graciously hosted the program for the past several years.

Rick Richter of Richter’s Flying Service in northern California and Leif Isaacson of Desert Air in Idaho presented this year’s PAASS program. PAASS is an important tool in our industry. Highly experienced pilots presenting information and techniques that help all of us do a better and safer job. I was particularly glad to see Wayne Handley’s ‘Turn Smart’ video readdressed, as well as the interview with Mr. Handley and Dusty Dowd. Their discussion on aerodynamics and aeronautical phenomenon was particularly enlightening. I believe many of us, while working our aircraft, have experienced situations where we thought something odd was going on with the way the aircraft handled. Being aware of the situations they discussed might help keep a pilot from fighting

the airplane and aggravating the problem. They covered control inputs that might be counter intuitive to most pilots, but were able to demonstrate how those techniques were needed in order to improve flying characteristics and avoid a possible catastrophe. I learned a lot from their discussion and feel my flying will benefit. One thing I noted about the course was the increase in computer technology that was covered. I never thought I would see a “Smart Phone App” for nozzle selection, spray pattern and droplet spectrum. It seems there are software programs and computer models for just about everything related to spraying. Now if only they could devise a gadget that would turn the wind or improve the attitude of a customer. However... that might stretching things a bit. There was also a notable increase in legal matters discussion and what you might call “CYA” standards and practices. Our industry has taken some bruises from the legal system and media. We know in our business we are guilty until proven innocent and the later is usually hard to come by. In the past, we have relied on our own practices to keep us out of trouble. The theory was as long as we are doing the right thing, then we’ll be okay and justice will see us through. That’s a nice thought, but a naive one. Time has shown no matter how hard we try there is always someone waiting to make a claim or sensationalize some sort of incident, whether it be fact or not.

There are too many people who are uneducated and in many instances are simply looking for a big paycheck compliments of the court system and their local ag aviation operator. Having the PAASS information presented and cultivated within our ranks is as important to our industry as safe flying practices. I’m glad to see we are coming together and taking the initiative in protecting ourselves from the coyotes. Perhaps in the future we will be able to have some sort of mainstream media message to counter the misinformation that too often gets published.

Having the PAASS information presented and cultivated within our ranks is as important to our industry as safe flying practices. Another item discussed was the decision making process. We make hundreds of decisions every second most of which we are completely unaware of. The “Go, No-Go” decisions are not usually as cut and dried as presented in a classroom. This discussion is one that I believe should instill awareness of our thought processes as much as toward particular circumstances. I had a conversation afterwards with a friend who pointed out bad decisions we have all made. The truth is we are human and make mistakes. The key is to minimize them. If doing something

stupid in an airplane would preclude someone from being an ag pilot, there would certainly be fewer ag pilots. The FAA attended the event and explained the new online medical form. The benefit of the WINGS program and what to do should you get a violation discussed. Good information. A big collective “Thanks from the ranks” is due to all the sponsors who give generously to our association and the PAASS program. This

is also true for the pilots who take time from their businesses and families to travel around the country to disseminate the information and offer their own expertise. We benefit greatly from their efforts. I strongly recommend all ag pilots attend and support the PAASS program. You’ll learn things you may not have known and could be re-introduced to things you have forgotten.

We factored your neighbor’s crop value into the chemistry. Right-sized droplets resist wind sheer for less risk of drift. Unlike ordinary drift retardants that were designed for ground application, Volare DC™ eliminates super-sized droplets that rupture from wind shear and micro particles that hang in the air. Instead, Volare DC creates “right-sized” droplets that drop to the crop and stay there. It’s an added dose of confidence and one less thing for you, and your neighbors, to worry about.

Frederick E. Tilton, M.D., M.P.H.,

aeromedical advisory

We’re here to help I know that many (maybe most) pilots harbor fears, and possibly serious misperceptions about the operation and mission of the FAA’s Office of Aerospace Medicine (OAM). Some of that fear may be due to a lack of understanding of our job, our process, and our philosophy. Our primary responsibility is to protect the safety of the National Airspace System, and our desire is to issue a medical certificate to every airman applicant as long as it is safe to do so. Work with us, and we will most certainly work with you to accomplish our shared goal of getting you safely into the sky.

I’d like to take this opportunity to share a little more information about the what, the why, and the who of how the OAM operates.

What and why We are all bound by the Code of Federal Regulations, and the ones specific to medical certification are laid out in 14 CFR part 67. This lists all of the medical standards that an airman must meet for a given class of medical certificate. You might think of part 67 as the rules of the game. Another helpful resource is the FAA’s Guide for Aviation Medical Examiners. For your reference it can be found at http:// go.usa.gov/YzrC . You can consider this document as the AME’s playbook. It delineates, in much greater detail, how the FAA

expects an AME to conduct the aviation medical examination, and offers guidance on applying the medical standards. As you might expect, this document contains quite a bit of technical and medical information, but it also provides plenty of useful information for pilots.

Who makes the decisions? For most pilots, interaction with the FAA’s OAM occurs through an AME; a physician whom the FAA has designated to act on its behalf. I’m happy to say that typically this interaction is a simple and straightforward process that results in on-the-spot issuance of an FAA medical certificate. That’s exactly how we want it to work. However, if an AME finds that you do not meet the medical standards, it will likely result in a delay in getting your certificate — but most importantly, not necessarily in a denial. Several things can happen when an AME determines that you might not meet the medical standards. When an AME is unsure of how to handle a specific case, he or she may simply defer the decision to the FAA, and transmit the application and examination. In this case, you will not receive a medical certificate or a denial until the file is reviewed either by the Regional Medical Office or the Aerospace Medical Certification Division (AMCD). The AME may also call either their Regional Flight Surgeon or the AMCD to discuss the case. Depending on the specific situation, the AME may be able to issue your medical certificate.

Washington, DC, and it is carried out by the Regional Medical Offices and AMCD. If the RFS or Manager of AMCD denies your medical certificate, you have the option of appealing to me via the Medical Appeals Branch of the Medical Specialties Division in Washington, DC. This division conducts a thorough review before making its recommendation to me. Let me assure you that I take the responsibility for evaluation and consideration very seriously — being a pilot myself, I understand how important it is to leave no stone unturned when evaluating a case. If you receive a denial at my level, you may appeal your case to the National

Transportation Safety Board for a hearing in front of an Administrative Law Judge.

You have the option of appealing to the Medical Appeals Branch of the Medical Specialties Division in Washington, DC. Understand that you play a major part in our review of your case. Please remember that we need your help when we request additional medical information or testing. While I understand that some requests involve cost and inconvenience, keep in mind that we are looking for any pieces of information that will allow us to issue you a medical certificate. One of the greatest frustrations I have is to see airmen grounded simply because we did not receive information that could have made a difference in our decision. Please don’t let that happen! Work with us, and we will work with you to achieve our mutual goal of happy, safe, and healthy flying. Frederick Tilton, M.D., M.P.H., received both an M.S. and an M.D. degree from the University of New Mexico and an M.P.H. from the University of Texas. During a 26-year career with the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Tilton logged more than 4,000 hours as a command pilot and senior flight surgeon flying a variety of aircraft. He currently flies the Cessna Citation 560 XL.

ntsb reports NTSB Identification: *ERA12CA216* Date: March 07, 2012 Location: Hollandale, MS Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502B Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot reported that he was taxiing the tailwheel-equipped agricultural application airplane for takeoff when the airplane encountered a left quartering tailwind gust, and the pilot was unable to maintain directional control. The airplane veered left and departed the left side of the runway. The tailwheel block attaching bolts failed and the tailwheel spring impacted the ground, stopping the airplane's lateral rotation, which resulted in substantial damage to the fuselage just forward of the vertical stabilizer. The pilot reported no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation.

subsequently lost power at an altitude of 75 to 100 feet above the ground, and the pilot made a forced landing. He pulled the airplane off the ground again briefly to clear an obstruction; however, when the airplane touched down again, the left main landing gear sank into soft ground and sheared off. The airplane rotated to the right onto its nose, and the left wing sustained structural damage. Post accident examination revealed that the left and right main fuel caps had a tight seal and there was no evidence of streaking or venting of fuel on the airplane or on the ground. The left, right, header, and purge fuel tanks were drained and yielded about 34 total ounces of fuel—two ounces from the right fuel tank and 32 ounces from the header tank. The left and purge tanks contained no fuel. No preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures were found that would have precluded normal operation. The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot's inadequate preflight planning and in-flight fuel management, which resulted in a total loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion. NTSB Identification: *ERA12CA304* Date: April 27, 2012 Location: Hershey, PA Aircraft: BELL 206B Injuries: 1 Serious. The pilot reported that before the accident flight, there was a trainee pilot in the agricultural application helicopter who

preferred no friction on the controls. Once the trainee pilot left, the accident pilot forgot to adjust the control friction. During the accident flight, the helicopter was spraying a wheat field at 55 mph and about 10 feet above the ground. The pilot let go of the collective to adjust the helicopter's computer. The collective subsequently lowered and the helicopter impacted terrain, coming to rest on its side, with the tail boom separated. The pilot stated that there were no preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have prevented normal operation. The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot's diverted attention while performing aerial application at low altitude, which resulted in controlled flight into terrain. Contributing to the accident was the pilot’s failure to adjust the control friction to the position he was accustomed. NTSB Identification: *CEN12CA274* Date: May 03, 2012 Location: Cedar Bluffs, NE Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-301 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. While conducting an aerial application flight, the pilot noticed that the fuel gauge displayed a low quantity. While attempting to return to an airstrip, the engine stopped producing power. The pilot performed a forced landing in a cornfield. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the wings and fuselage. In a statement provided by the pilot to the Federal Aviation

Administration inspector, the pilot said that he ran out of fuel. In addition, a certified airframe and powerplant mechanic examined the airplane after the accident and confirmed fuel exhaustion. NTSB Identification: *WPR12CA271* Date: June 20, 2012 Location: Okanogan, WA Aircraft: GRUMMAN ACFT ENG COR-SCHWEIZER G-164B, Injuries: 1 Serious. The pilot reported that, while establishing the second boundary along the eastern edge of a field where he was conducting an aerial application, the airplane struck power lines. Following the collision with the power lines, the airplane turned to the left and impacted the ground in a flat attitude, which resulted in structural damage to all four wings and fuselage. The pilot stated that there were four sets of power lines near the field; however, the upper right wing blocked his view of the power lines that the airplane struck. No preimpact mechanical malfunctions were reported that would have precluded normal operation of the airplane. The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The pilot's failure to maintain clearance from power lines while maneuvering.

NTSB Identification: *ERA12CA517* Date: August 17, 2012 Location: Gum Neck, NC Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-402B Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot reported that he was conducting an aerial application flight and taking off from an 80-foot-wide, rough grass private airstrip. During the takeoff roll, the airplane began to bounce and drift to the right. The airplane’s right wing contacted corn and it subsequently veered further to the right and nosed over. The airplane sustained substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage. The pilot stated that he did not experience any preimpact mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation. NTSB Identification: *CEN12CA568* Date: August 17, 2012 Location: Bogata, TX Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502B Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot reported that he completed two successful aerial application flights from the same 2,000-foot turf runway before the accident flight. The pilot reported that the airplane was not on level terrain when the chemical was added to the load prior to the accident flight, and it might have caused the airplane to be loaded over the maximum gross weight of the airplane by 500 pounds. The pilot was distracted during the loading of the chemical and refueling, and he did not recheck the level of the

chemical in the hopper. The temperature was about 95 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind was from 270 degrees at 5 knots. He departed from runway 18 with 10 degrees of flaps. The airplane became airborne, but it did not get out of ground effect. He stated that a dust devil might have affected the airplane. According to the pilot, the airplane “sagged” (lost lift) and the left main landing gear hit an embankment. The airplane landed in the adjacent cornfield, and sustained substantial damage to the wings and fuselage. The pilot reported that there was no mechanical malfunction or failure of the airplane prior to the impact with the terrain. NTSB Identification: *ERA13CA033* Date: October 20, 2012 Location: Newton, GA Aircraft: AIR TRACTOR INC AT-502B Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The pilot stated that he was performing an agricultural application over a cotton field bordered by a set of power lines. After making a pass over the field, the pilot ascended to fly over the power lines. While turning back towards the field, he “misjudged” the location of a static cable. The airplane’s main landing gear contacted the cable, and the airplane entered a rapid decent. The pilot initiated a forced landing in the cotton field, resulting in a hard landing and substantial damage to the wings and empennage. The pilot report no mechanical failures or malfunctions that would have precluded normal flight.

executed in 2008-2013 and the aircraft qualifies as “certain aircraft” or “long production period” as defined in the Internal Revenue Code, then the aircraft can be placed in service during 2014 and still qualify for 50-percent bonus depreciation. For commercial aircraft used in the business of transporting persons or property for hire; the aircraft must cost more than one million dollars and have a production period greater than one year. For non-commercial aircraft used for business; the aircraft must cost more than $200,000, have a production period greater than four months, and the purchase agreement must have a non-refundable deposit of ten percent of the aircraft cost or $100,000 whichever is less. Agricultural and firefighting aircraft operators should check IRS bulletins for other special rules that may apply. The product improvement cost subject to bonus depreciation can include both new and used equipment provided that at least 80% of the product improvement equipment cost is new.

What is the dollar difference between bonus depreciation and normal depreciation? To calculate a dollar difference for a specific example we must start with fixed assumptions for one case. We are attempting to show only the dollar difference of the "depreciation method", therefore the only variable is the "depreciation method". This allows you to see the dollar difference for this one case. The assumptions are: • The purchase price of both example aircraft is $1,000,000. • The operating costs and resale values of the sample aircraft are the same. • The tax bracket of the purchaser is 38%.

New equipment purchases will allow a bonus depreciation of 50% of the new equipment cost to be taken in the year the equipment is placed in service. The 50% bonus depreciation claimed in the first year is in addition to the normal depreciation calculated on the balance (Purchase price plus sales tax less the bonus depreciation). The total depreciation claimed can never exceed the purchase price of the equipment plus the sales tax.

With the actual dollar tax benefit known in each year for each method of depreciation using both bonus and normal (Top portion of Table C), the Dollar Net Present Value (NPV) (Bottom portion of Table C) of these four cash flows is calculated for each year using a discount rate of 7%. After the NPV is calculated for each year on each of the four cash flows, the NPV difference between the bonus and normal cash flows are shown in Table D. What do these numbers mean? The $19,576 in year 6 of the 5-Year MACRS column means: If you use bonus depreciation for a $1,000,000 aircraft and hold it for six years, you have received the equivalent of a $19,576 check deposited in your bank account today versus $0 by using normal depreciation. Remember, this compares the dollar NPV difference between bonus and normal depreciation methods, not the total dollar tax benefits of either aircraft. $2,000,000, the maximum amount expensed ($500,000) is reduced dollar-for-dollar by the amount of purchases in excess of $2,000,000 until the expense deduction reaches zero when the total of all asset purchases reach $2,500,000. The expense deduction is limited to the amount of the taxpayer’s taxable income. When both bonus depreciation and Section 179 expensing are available and desired, the deductions are calculated by applying Section 179 first, followed by bonus depreciation, and last the normal depreciation allowance.

Table E and Table F show examples of combining the Section 179 deduction with the bonus depreciation using 5-Year MACRS and 7-Year MACRS depreciation methods. Please consult your tax advisor before making a decision on what type depreciation is best for your situation. www.AircraftCostAnalysis.com has details on performing aircraft cost analysis.

Schweiss Doors’ introduction of spherical bearings is unique to the hydraulic door industry Schweiss Doors has once again proven to be a worldwide leader in production of hydraulic and bifold doors, and is proud to announce it has made another unique design improvement to its hydraulic one-piece doors with the addition of “spherical” bearings. All Schweiss “Red Power” Hydraulic Doors are now built with spherical bearings. These bearings are critical to the safe and smooth operation of the door. The design team at Schweiss Doors, during an extensive testing phase, found them to be the perfect answer to a stronger, longer lasting door for its customers.

No one else in the industry has adopted this unique feature. Others seem to be content with the use of conventional bearings, but Schweiss Doors engineering team has proven that spherical bearings are far superior. It’s simple, just plain common sense — when you use superior components, you get a superior product.

All Schweiss “Red Power” Hydraulic Doors are now built with spherical bearings.

Spherical bearings are not something new, but they are “new” to the door industry. They are being used and have been used in tractor 3-point hitches, planters, drawbars, car suspensions, engines, driveshafts, heavy machinery and many other applications throughout the years. Schweiss Doors was “light years” ahead of the curve in engineering genius by realizing they would be perfect for its “Red Power” hydraulic lift doors, which in many cases are large and heavy doors. Schweiss Hydraulic Door spherical bearings are strategically located between the teardrop area and cylinder

plate at each end of the doors large lifting and closing cylinders. Each door frame has a certain amount of deflection when in operation. Spherical bearings allow for less friction, eliminate binding, wear and damage to a door cylinder and take up any flexing of the door frame. Mystery photo revealed Flat wing-tip Stearman Submitted by Lawrence O’ Roth My first real contact with ag aviation was at meetings at the Wiley Post Airport in Oklahoma City in 1952. There, a plan was developed to outfit a WWII Stearman biplane primary trainer with new wings, bigger engine, prop and a spraying system to be used in a USDA experimental brush control program. My part in this was to make detailed drawings of the new NACA wings before covering and being installed on the plane. Plans were also made of the spraying system installed. This work was done at the Cimarron Field Airport, near Yukon, Oklahoma using the facilities of the Clarence Page Aviation Co. The NACA wings featured flat (not rounded) ends, with a profile supposedly to enhance the lift somehow and the flat plates, perhaps,

to reduce wingtip vortex entrainment. Why this particular NACA airfoil shape was selected, is unknown to me. Many years later, I took the plans and photos of the plane to the new Air & Space Museum in Oklahoma City. There was a lot of activity at the Clarence Page Company in 1952. They were involved in WWII surplus aircraft and dealt mainly in engines. One of the engines, along with a new prop was mounted on the Stearman. Also, this airport was the base of operations for a USDA grasshopper bait spreading program, an operation that employed a DC-3 to spread the bait. I was not involved in the brush spraying program using the plane, but did observe the field operations several times as

Cimmaron Field Yukon, Oklahoma, 1952 brush plots were sprayed near Alex, Oklahoma. I suppose they were using the new (then) weed control chemicals, 2-4,D and 2,45T. These field operations were managed and directed by the USDA. For some reason, I was in Oklahoma City in 1952 or 1953 when the OAAA (Oklahoma Aerial Applicators Association) was created at the Skirvin Hotel. Thus, I began attending the OAAA meetings that, for the first few years were held in Stillwater. Some years later I started work on the spray booms and nozzles that ultimately led to our NASA Project and our work with ag planes throughout the U.S.

AT-504: Learn and earn. With sideby-side cockpit seating and 485-gallon capacity, the AT-504 is a great way to train new ag pilots and earn while they learn. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34AG turbine engine, you’ll get working speeds and performance like the tried and true AT-502B. And when the training day is done, you’ll see that it was productive workday, too. Wells Fargo financing for qualified buyers is available; just visit with your Air Tractor dealer. TFN

AT-502B: More performance; more profit potential. With Air Tractor’s AT-502B there’s plenty of power and a big, 500gallon payload to please both pilot and operator. The Pratt & Whitney PT6A34AG turbine engine delivers efficient and effective performance that shortens ferry times and reduces takeoffs and landings. Since 1987 the AT-502 series has set the standard as the industry’s most popular ag plane. You can own one with attractive financing options from Wells Fargo. Talk to your Air Tractor dealer. TFN

AT-802: Capacity that creates profits. An 800-gallon hopper, zippy 190 mph ferry speeds, and greater working capacity than any other ag aircraft on the market - the AT-802 is simply a hoss. With the AT-802 you’ll ferry faster, spray more fields and do bigger jobs all in one load. That’s production that only Air Tractor can offer you. Visit with your Air Tractor dealer about the AT-802. And ask about special Air Tractor financing now available from Wells Fargo for qualified buyers. T F N

AT-602: Trim your overhead. You’ll reduce costs and increase profit margins when you scale a multi-plane operation down to a single-plane operation. Air Tractor’s AT-602 makes it an easy choice. The big 630-gallon payload moves you up to high volume production, reduces loads, saves time and helps trim operating expenses compared with two smaller planes. The AT-602 is the ideal solution for 5-gallon work on center-pivot circles. Step it up with an AT-602. Visit your Air Tractor dealer. TFN
