Health tourism in Malaysia is closely monitored by the Malaysian Ministry of Health and Ministry of Tourism (Potential Stakeholders) to guarantee visiting patients first class treatment and care. In addition, many hospitals are also ISO 9001 accredited for Quality Management Systems and have Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. Penang’s leading private healthcare institutions meet the Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) standards.

Malaysia is currently ranked among the world’s top health tourism destinations thanks to its affordable, high quality medical treatment, with most health tourists making Penang their preferred destination

The huge interest in health tourism sparked the establishment of Penang Health Association in 2006, then later in 2015, The Penang Centre of Medical Tourism (PMED) was established to promote Penang’s health tourism.

The Penang government is focusing on development and improvement of tourism in the state (healthcare tourism included) as it contributes a high percentage of their gross domestic product (GDP)

Of the total, Indonesians make up the biggest group of inbound tourists seeking medical treatment at various medical facilities in Penang

According to New Strait Times (2017), medical tourism is another source to advance Malaysia’s GDP According to the 2018 statistic from Ministry of Health Malaysia, about 1 2 million people travelled to Malaysia for medical and healthcare purpose This has proven significant steps for Malaysia to be recognised as ‘Best Country in the World for Healthcare’.
