Halu ymmärtää Poikani rakastui ekaluokkalaisena. Rakkauden kohde ei ollut naapurintyttö, vaan itse avaruus. Lapsen vihreän huoneen seinät peittyivät Linnunradan ja kotigalaksimme planeettojen kuvilla, iltasaduksi luettiin Avaruuden tähtitarhaa. Seitsenvuotias pohti päivittäin mustien aukkojen mysteeriä. Pluton menetetty asema planeettana mietitytti. Lapsen tiedonjanon takana tuntui olevan kiihkeä halu ymmärtää, miten kaikki on syntynyt ja mihin se on menossa. Metsähovin radiotutkimusasemalla on haettu vastauksia avaruuden arvoituksiin jo vuodesta 1974. Siellä havainnoidaan ja analysoidaan maailmankaikkeuden radiosäteilyä Suomen ainoalla tarkoitukseen suunnatulla radioteleskoopilla. Sähkötekniikan korkeakouluun kuuluva asema on mukana Euroopan avaruusjärjestö ESAn Planck-satelliittihankkeessa, jonka toivotaan tuovan vastauksia valtaviin kysymyksiin. Poikani rakkaus on ajan myötä vaihtanut kohdetta jo monta kertaa. Mustien aukkojen ja kvasaarien paikan ovat ottaneet jalkapallo, Goosebumpskauhuromaanit ja viimeisimpänä villityksenä Minecraft, tietokonepeli, jossa rakennetaan – ja tuhotaan – kokonaisia maailmoja.

A desire to understand My son fell in love when he was in first grade. The object of his desire was not the girl next door, but space itself. Images of the Milky Way and the planets of our galaxy covered the green walls of his room. His bedtime stories were read from an informational non-fiction work about astronomy and science. Every day, my little seven-year-old would think about the mystery of black holes. Pluto’s lost planetary status was another cause for concern. This thirst for knowledge seemed to be fuelled by a child’s burning desire to understand the origin of everything and where it all was headed. The Metsähovi Radio Observatory has been searching for answers to the riddles of space since 1974. It observes and analyses cosmic radio waves using Finland’s only purposebuilt radio telescope. The Observatory is attached to the School of Electrical Engineering and participates in the European Space Agency’s Planck satellite project. The hope is that Planck will provide answers to a host of enormous questions. The object of my son’s passion has changed many times over since then. Black holes and quasars have been replaced by football, Goosebumps horror novels and his latest craze Minecraft, a computer game that involves the building – and destruction – of entire worlds.
