AAAA TO RE-INVIGORATE PRTC

Successful meeting held to canvas industry on the ‘next steps’ for the Performance Racing Tuning Council The Performance Racing and Tuning Council (PRTC) held a Networking Event on November 16 last year at the Auto Innovation Centre to canvas industry on the ‘next steps’ for the sub council. The Performance Racing and Tuning industry has evolved significantly since the PRTC was formed and the AAAA wanted to hear from interested members about the specific current needs and issues for businesses within the sector. Former PRTC Chairman Graham ScudamoreSmith, from Fulcrum Suspension, addressed the large group of interested parties via video link to get the discussion started. Discussion was then facilitated by AAAA Director of Membership, Marketing and Events, Tiffany Conway, and AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity. The meeting was a huge success with a number of key outcomes arising from the enthusiastic and highly productive discussion. These were as follows:

Promote the Performance Racing and Tuning profession The sector is keen to promote its value in terms of public/customer service and economic value. It was suggested that the Council conduct a research study into market size, value, and key trends. It was also suggested that the PRTC could promote and protect customers, the industry, and the public good. Those in attendance agreed it was paramount to work within regulatory limitations and to be proactive in showing that member businesses respect their responsibility to upholding regulations, especially emissions testing. It was also discussed that being proactive would enable the PRTC to stay aligned to political and social influences, and to better articulate the value of the PRT industry to government and other stakeholders. Other ideas also raised included developing a suite of PRTC communications (such as flyers, a webpage, articles in Aftermarket magazine and so

on) and the creation of a PRTC showcase to bring stakeholders together at upcoming industry events.

Tuning It was agreed that creating a network of tuners, with a public education campaign and a voluntary code of conduct, would be highly desirable. Such a network could share information with other similar bodies, such as SEMA. The discussion also highlighted the following points about Tuning: • This specialised area of the industry can be undermined by ‘backyarders’ and ‘dodgy’ service providers who operate in what is largely an unregulated area; • There is opportunity for PRTC to encourage and promote quality, and showcase the skill and benefits provided by Tuners; and • The PRTC could highlight what good quality looks like in communications and potentially set up a self-certification process that can be used as a point of differentiation for good quality professionals. According to those in attendance, the PRTC should find a way to differentiate the businesses that are doing the right thing; educate consumers about what quality tuning is and how to identify quality tuners; and promote reasons why it is worth investing in quality providers instead of just going to the cheapest.

The discussion noted that emission testing is difficult and costly to undertake due to a lack of testing infrastructure and inconsistent state regulations; with state-based differences noted as being highly inefficient to work with which compromises customer satisfaction and commercial sustainability for these businesses. It was agreed that the PRTC could help to foster clarity and consistency in this area, noting that attempting to achieve consistency across States is a large and complex goal, and therefore multiple possible solutions need to be explored.

It was pointed out that highlighting examples of how PRT businesses are using AASRA could promote AASRA membership take-up and the value of access to AASRA information to PRT businesses. It was agreed Tuners should be encouraged to use AASRA and test access and capability through data.

Other outcomes The following other potential activities of a reinvigorated PRTC also included: • exploring and understanding the impacts of EVs as performance vehicles; • help align a diverse range of businesses involved in a range of track days; • involving PRTC in providing input into the upcoming review of vehicle modification code (VSB14); • lobbying for low use registration (similar to classic car club permits) for modified ‘hobby’ vehicles. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR FORMULA SAE The engineering competition was held at Calder Park in December 2023 Formula SAE bid a fond farewell to internal combustion (IC) engines and a cordial welcome to a growing number of autonomous vehicles at the December Formula SAE-A event which was held at Calder Park. Judging was held across a range of disciplines including business presentation, cost, engineering design, acceleration, skid pad, efficiency, endurance and auto cross, with points accruing to find the overall competition winners. For a full listing of these results, visit www.saea.com.au/ results-2023 Taking out the overall win for IC was Edith Cowan University, with the University of Sydney in second place; while the University of Canterbury was proclaimed as the overall EV competition winner, ahead of the University of NSW, Sydney, and the University of Queensland. Event organisers explain that Formula SAE is so much more than a competition for engineering students and related disciplines, stating it is there to assist companies as well. Among the companies attending for the first time was Caterpillar. “We had really solid conversations, really positive candidates that we identified. The talent is there, that’s for sure,” Caterpillar Senior Field Engineer Electrification and Energy Solutions, Casey Eastham, said. A long-time event partner is ADF Careers who have supported the event for years.

“It is in our best interests to look at university students who are already halfway through their degrees. We have what we call our Defence University Sponsorship where we take people who are already at university, and we pay for the remainder of their degree,” ADF Careers’ Malcolm Lewis said. It is not just the winning teams that are successful at FSAE, it is every team that enters, because every team learns from the experience and every team member gains that added real life knowledge that companies are seeking. “I have been to many events representing Tesla’s talent acquisition team, and for me personally, this was by far the best in terms of the quality of talent that we encountered,” Tesla Lead Recruiter Pacific, Stuart van Heerden, said. “To take part in this event generally means a large commitment over and above normal study, where students apply theoretical learnings into real world applications. “This means they need to overcome real challenges and problems, both during development and during the event itself. “This is identical to the pressure and challenges that they will face in the workplace. “We were super impressed by the level of engineering, innovation, commitment, and team spirit displayed this year, especially when considering the disruption to knowledge transfer caused by COVID.

“It is no surprise that Tesla’s current workforce includes a large F-SAE alumni, both in Australia and the US, and we expect that to continue to grow. Thank you for all those who spent some time connecting with us during the event, and we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2024!” Event organisers explain that one of the central pillars of the event is that FSAE aims to teach students how a business operates which is more than the engineering aspect, instead also covering the wider scope of manufacturing with lessons carrying to the real world, making FSAE students the most employable. Competition organisers state, “as we say farewell to the era of internal combustion it was encouraging to see such a large contingent of EVs filling the gap with several teams from overseas, two teams from Taiwan, two from New Zealand and one from Indonesia.” To learn more about Formula SAE, visit www.saea.com.au/formula-sae-a

NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR OPTIMA SEARCH FOR THE ULTIMATE STREET CAR The ‘toughest test for genuine street cars’ has announced a partnership with Out There Group The OPTIMA Search for the Ultimate Street Car has announced a new partnership with Out There Group and also its 2024 Australian dates. The highly anticipated event will take place on the 20th of April, 2024, at the renowned Calder Park Raceway. RACER INDUSTRIES’ CAMERON MCLEOD WINS SUPERCARS YOUNG GUN AWARD Cameron was recognised with the award at the Supercars Gala Awards night Racer Industries’ driver and Sparco Australia Ambassador, Cameron McLeod, has been presented with the prestigious Mike Kable Young Gun Award for 2023, following his inaugural season in the Dunlop Super3 Series. At the conclusion of the 2023 season, McLeod had won the most Super3 rounds of any driver in the Series with four first places, achieved nine pole positions and set 10 fastest lap times across the 12 races – remarkable accomplishments for an 18-year-old. The Mike Kable Young Gun Award is an esteemed

annual motor racing accolade dedicated to recognising the accomplishments of a rookie driver aged under 30 who competes in the Supercars Championship, the Super 2 Series, or the Super3 Series. Named after the Australian motoring journalist, motorsport publicist, and mentor, Mike Kable, the award is presented to the rookie driver deemed to have performed exceptionally throughout their inaugural season following a vote by a panel of motorsport experts. Through clinching the 2023 Award, Cameron has joined a distinguished group of past winners including motorsport luminaries such as Marcos Ambrose, James Courtney, Rick Kelly, Scott McLaughlin, and Mark Winterbottom. Cameron is a third-generation racer, continuing the legacy set by his father, longtime racer and industry veteran, Ryan McLeod, and his grandfather, the illustrious 1987 Bathurst 1000 winner, Peter McLeod.

His motor racing career began in karting, before transitioning to car racing in 2020 at aged 15, competing in state-level Formula Ford in Queensland and campaigning a Suzuki Swift in local sedan events. Cameron’s journey has been marked by notable achievements, including podium finishes in the British Formula 4 Championship and remarkable national Formula Ford Series performances. His diverse racing experience extends to sedan events, where he secured impressive finishes in events such as the Bathurst 6 Hour and Dubai 24 Hour. F1 IN SCHOOLS TO FEATURE AT THE 2024 REPCO ADELAIDE MOTORSPORT FESTIVAL Held the week prior to the Australian Grand Prix, the Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival is a museum in motion The 2024 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival will have a showcase of the globally acclaimed F1 in Schools Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program at the event on March 16 and 17, igniting passion for STEM within motorsport among students and attendees alike. F1 in Schools is the world’s leading student competition in STEM. The 2024 Australian national F1 in Schools final, featuring 207 students across 44 teams from Australia and New Zealand, will be hosted at St Peter’s College Adelaide from March 11 to 15. The competition challenges over 17,000 schools across 51 nations, including around 22,000 Australian students annually, to design and race miniature F1 cars, fostering invaluable skills in innovation and engineering. Following the national finals, F1 in Schools will have a showcase within a new STEM Zone at the 2024 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival, located on the premium playing field in Victoria Park. This immersive zone will allow festival-goers to explore and learn about the F1 in Schools STEM Challenge and witness cutting-edge STEM and technological advancements from a variety of organisations. 6

Held the week prior to the Australian Grand Prix, the Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival is a museum in motion, displaying historic, rare and significant racing vehicles on the Victoria Park section of the Adelaide Street Circuit. Categories featuring Formula 1, V8 Supercars, Group C and A touring cars, sportscars and more will feature over the course of the Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival, in addition to on-track demonstrations, off-track displays, villas and more. Amongst the iconic vehicles on-site will be the Benetton B200 that scored podiums in the 2000 Formula 1 season, the Mazda 767B, and Yamaha YZR 500, the Benetton B190 Ford that won the 1990 Adelaide Grand Prix and the Ford Mustang raced by Dick Johnson in the first year of Group A touring cars, while Craig Lowndes will drive a 1988 Arrows A10B Megatron in the Formula 1 category. Also headed to the festival is one of MercedesBenz’s iconic DTM racers, a Mercedes-Benz 190E DTM Group A touring car; a rare Lancia sportscar from the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Lanica Beta Montecarlo Turbo Group 5; and one of the most sought after sportscars from the Ferrari stable, the Ferrari 250 LM.

Lining up as part of the PremiAir Hire Bathurst winners’ category will be the actual car that won just the third Bathurst 500 (now known as the Bathurst 1000) in 1965, the Ford Cortina Mk.I GT500, the two-time winning Holden VH SS Commodore (1982 and 1983) and Holden ZB Commodore (2020 and 2022) plus the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32s that won in 1991 and 1992, amongst others. The 2024 Repco Adelaide Motorsport Festival will also feature a demonstration of some of the most rare and unique Ferrari special, to be called the ‘Ferrari Spettacolo’. As part of Repco’s naming-rights deal, the Repco Circuit Safari will also feature, allowing lucky guests and fans to be in a bus on track alongside a selection of race cars, enabling the passengers the once in a life-time experience of seeing and hearing iconic sportscars, touring cars and more up close. DBA AND MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA FORM NEW ALLIANCE Disc Brakes Australia (DBA) has announced a new partnership with Motorsport Australia as its exclusive Brake Partner As a not-for-profit member-based organisation, Motorsport Australia is focused on the development, regulation and administration of motorsport across Australia. It is the recognised governing and sanctioning body for four-wheeled motorsport in Australia and has been a member of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) since 1958. The new partnership between Disc Brakes Australia (DBA) and Motorsport Australia acknowledges their joint commitment to motorsport in Australia from enthusiasts’ events to amateur racing categories all the way to semiprofessional and professional formats. MOTOREX RAPIDLY APPROACHING Delivering ROI for automotive brands, MotorEx will be held in May Those behind MotorEx say it has carved a niche by delivering an exceptional Return on Investment (ROI) for automotive brands. This year will mark the 22nd instalment of this iconic event, which has grown to be Australia’s largest automotive aftermarket consumer trade show. Event organisers state businesses can still join the ranks of 130 top-tier automotive companies from Australia and the USA and showcase their wares by booking an indoor trade stand or building an engaging outdoor activation. MotorEx states that it allows brands to engage with more than 800 entrants and nearly 30,000

enthusiastic attendees, of whom approximately 30 percent have indicated they work in the automotive aftermarket. More than just a showcase for Australia’s elite show cars, MotorEx is a bustling marketplace where commerce thrives. A significant 41.5 percent of attendees made purchases from exhibitors at MotorEx in 2023, underscoring the event’s commercial appeal. This figure was even more impressive among entrants, with 50.6 percent indicating they made purchases while attending the event. The products that topped the purchase list include car care, closely followed by clothing and merchandise, and automotive parts. These categories resonated with both attendees and entrants, highlighting the diverse range of offerings at the expo. When it comes to budgeting for automotive accessories and aftermarket parts, 35.8 percent of attendees had a preferred range. Among them, the majority (30.0 percent) had a budget in the $1,001 - $5,000 range. The entrants were even more decisive in their spending plans, with a whopping 81.0 percent indicating they had a preferred budget range for automotive accessories and aftermarket parts. And among them, 41.9 percent were most likely

to allocate between $1,001 and $5,000 for their purchases. Event organisers say this shows attendees at MotorEx are serious about their automotive passion, with an average annual spend of $8,661 on aftermarket modifications and upgrades. Entrants, on the other hand, showcased a diverse spending pattern. On average, they spend $6,734 annually on vehicle repairs and maintenance. When it comes to aftermarket modifications and upgrades, their average annual expenditure skyrockets to $14,448. MotorEx says its worth noting that nearly 60 percent of these respondents are willing to spend more than $4,000 per annum on these upgrades. Easy to Install and Setup Say goodbye to tangled wires and tedious setups. Bluetooth functionality means no wires through the firewall for a quick, and easy installation. The plug-and-play harness accepts Garrett flange and threaded style speed sensors. Kits are available without a speed sensor for users who already have a speed sensor, and with for those who don’t have one. A 12V switched power and sufficient ground connection are all you need to get started.

The Sensor Setup menu is loaded with existing Garrett Turbocharger part numbers, models, compressor wheel blade counts and max-rated turbo speed. Custom configurations can also be created for Garrett models without speed sensor ports or for non-Garrett manufactured turbochargers that utilise the same style speed sensors.

Analyse Turbo Speed and Boost Pressure With the device paired and the car running, the mobile device screen will light up with live turbo speed and boost pressure (if connected) in a dynamic gauge and graphical format. The gauge display features a constant live data feed and has a marker that freezes on peak turbo speed. The graph plot length can display up to 120 seconds of live data.

The Garrett name ties back to turbo origins in the 1950s. At that time, entrepreneur and engineer Cliff Garrett led a project team to develop a turbocharger for a Caterpillar D9 crawler tractor, marking the beginning of the turbocharged era for the automotive industry. PERFORMANCE ENGINE COOLING SOLUTIONS From Davies, Craig

A critical factor with a performance engine is the heat it generates and maintaining it at a desired operating temperature. Increased horsepower generates increased heat which must be removed as quickly and efficiently as possible to ensure the engine does not overheat. Three areas of an engine that should be examined when tackling engine heat are the radiator and appropriate cooling fan, the water pump, and the engine and transmission oil. “Firstly, let’s discuss the radiator. Brass, Copper, or Aluminium – most car enthusiasts and weekend mechanics have heard this debate,” Davies, Craig Sales and Marketing Manager, John Benson, said. “Arguments on either side range from heat transfer properties to price. In short, the OEM radiator should be sufficient as long as it is in good condition. Make sure it has been pressure-tested, is clean internally and externally. “The coolant that goes into a radiator and subsequently the engine is also vital. Walk into any automotive aftermarket store and there will be rows of engine coolants staring you in the face, including even waterless varieties. “These products have anti-boil/anti-freeze, rust inhibitor qualities and are designed to perform in very cold and extremely hot climatic conditions. Ratios can vary and a 50/50 mix with distilled water is considered an acceptable mixture. “Select a coolant that meets the OEMs recommendations. It is not recommended that coolants be mixed. Flush out the cooling system at regular intervals. “Secondly, let’s talk about engine cooling fans. It is commonly accepted practice that an electric Thermatic Fan be installed to carry out the very important function of driving an acceptable volume of air through the radiator. “All IC engines have an optimum operating temperature and controlled air flow through the radiator during idling and slow travel speeds is one of the major factors to keeping an engine operating at a desired temperature.

“Adequate engine cooling removes heat energy fast enough to keep temperatures manageable to preserve engine life. “The simple mantra is ‘one can never have too much air being drawn or pushed through a radiator,’ so fill the core of the radiator with the largest fan or fans as is physically possible. “Davies, Craig has been manufacturing Thermatic Electric Cooling Fans for over 50 years and one can quickly access the range by clicking onto the Fan Selection Guide on the Davies, Craig website. “Thirdly, another vital component to the engine cooling process is the water pump. Most modern engines have a mechanical coolant pump. “Today’s basic mechanical water pump is not very sophisticated. A light metal impellor swirls around inside the chamber of a belt-driven water pump cavity while its speed and subsequent coolant flow is determined by engine revs. “Some spend buckets of money investing in development to increase engine horsepower and pay little if any attention to the water pump. “Further, supercharging, or turbocharging engines is becoming a very desirable method of increasing engine horsepower. “Intercoolers are a usual requirement in these circumstances and an auxiliary electric water pump or booster pump is usually installed. “The Davies, Craig patented LCD EWP/Fan Digital Controller will manage coolant flow commensurate with engine temperature and control the Thermatic Electric Cooling Fan/s.” As a proud Australian manufacturer, Davies, Craig says it has dedicated significant resources over the past 50 years in the development of an extensive range of Thermatic Electric Cooling Fans and a number of remote-mount, lightweight Electric Water Pumps to suit a variety of engine applications. TURBO PROS TALKS TURBOCHARGER FITTING The experts at Turbo Pros recommend you follow these steps when fitting a turbocharger When fitting a replacement turbo, you should always follow these steps. Before you start, Turbo Pros says it is important to make sure you understand why the old unit failed – you don’t want the same problem to recur and damage the new unit again. Before fitting a new unit, you should figure out the reasons of turbo failure and fix the problems accordingly. Then, ensure you are replacing the correct unit – the part number should be shown on the old turbo’s nameplate. If you have difficulty reading the part number, Turbo Pros says it can help with the latest VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) checker and can identify the correct turbo for you.

Once you know why the original failed, and you have the correct unit ready to fit, Turbo Pros says you should follow these steps: • Check for cleanliness – the smallest particles of dirt can do irrevocable damage to a turbocharger so check the engine intake/ exhaust and aftercooler systems for cleanliness and obstructions, carefully removing oil, pieces of gasket, dust, dirt and other debris. Replace the air filter. • Check oil feed pipe and oil drain pipe – ensure that the oil inlet and oil drain flanges are clean and free from obstruction, internal carbon and sludge, removing them to clean if necessary. If in doubt, replace with new. • Replace the oil and filter, including the prime filter, ensuring that only OEM recommended parts and specified oil are used. • Check the exhaust mounting flange – make sure it is flat and free from cracks and carbon debris, and the studs are in good condition. • Check that the manifold casting is not cracked on the outside or breaking up internally. If in doubt, replace with new. • Mount the turbocharger on the exhaust flange, checking that the turbine inlet gasket fits correctly to give a gas tight seal.

• Align the end housings with all other connections and ensure that all fastenings are tightened to the specified torque. Check that any ‘O’ rings are not trapped when orientating the compressor cover as this may lead to a leakage. • Connect the oil drain pipe, using the gaskets supplied. Do not use any liquid gasket product on turbocharger connections. • Fill the turbocharger oil feed hole with clean engine oil and rotate the wheel by hand. • Connect all external fittings to the turbocharger. On older engines, pull out the fuel stop and crank on the starter to develop oil pressure. On modern engines, start and idle for two minutes, checking that the oil warning light has gone out and that all air, gas, and oil connections are tight and free from leakage, using soapy water to help detect gas leaks. Aeroflow Performance has introduced a range of Boosted steampipe turbo manifolds, a series of pipes that collect exiting exhaust gases which can be channelled into Aeroflow’s merge collector and are perfectly matched to its Boosted range of turbochargers. Aeroflow says its Boosted turbo manifolds are finished to the highest of standards, constructed from thick wall 3mm mandrel bent steam pipe with CNC Machined header and turbo flanges. Each flange is machined after welding to ensure precise surface finish. BENDIX EXPLAINS BRAKE-BY-WIRE

For the majority of vehicles on Australian and New Zealand roads, braking is managed via a hydraulic system Bendix explains that applying the brake pedal activates a power booster that forces brake fluid through the master cylinder and combination valve, via brake lines to all four wheels. More recent automotive developments though have seen the introduction of ‘brake-by-wire’ technology. Brake-by-wire is more commonly found in hybrid and electric cars, although some internal combustion engine vehicles have also transitioned. Several brands that have adopted brake-by-wire include EV and hybrid models by Toyota, Audi and Lexus as well as conventional powertrain models like Alfa Romeo’s Giulia and Stelvio, along with the Chevrolet C8 Corvette.

Choosing the correct brake setup for a successful day at the track can often be confusing and expensive, if you use a product not fit for purpose. The aftermarket industry is very competitive and full of sales hype to attract buyers. However, aesthetics or ‘bling’ are no substitute for product performance when attending a track day and partaking in any form of motorsport competition, warns DBA. DBA has been manufacturing brake rotors for more than 45 years in Sydney, Australia. Throughout that time, it has held strong connections with Motorsport both at grassroots and professional levels. This commitment has resulted in countless hours of product testing through situations of extreme demand, including rally, endurance, and various other racing codes. Temperature management The two most important factors when it comes to brake rotors used in extreme applications are heat capacity and thermal stress management. Heat capacity design is a compromise between having sufficient metal mass in the friction ring to accept and process the kinetic energy transferred into the brake system to decelerate the vehicle, and trying to minimise the rotating mass of the wheel assembly (unsprung weight). DBA explains that its 4000 and 5000 Series upgrade performance rotors address both these issues. The formula of XG-150 cast iron in combination with the patented ‘Kangaroo Paw’ internal pillar and post vent design offers optimal temperature properties, whilst the 5000 Series two-piece rotors minimise the unsprung weight by using ultra lightweight aluminium hats. Thermal stress management is about minimising fatigue to prolong the life of the rotor. Regardless of the manufacturer or rotor design, grey cast iron will fatigue in motorsport applications. The thermal expansion from heating and contraction when cooling initiates a stress and strain cycle, which is essentially metal fatigue. It is therefore recommended and best practice by professional race teams to regularly inspect rotors after every session and discard them after a known period depending on conditions and application to avoid any unpredicted failures due to metal fatigue. Again, DBA upgrade performance rotors prolong the rotor’s safe use period by using one of the most advanced metallurgic compositions available.

Surface design DBA says that without question, when it comes to track and racing applications, it is slotted rotors wherever possible. There are drivers that like to maintain the factory setup with plain face rotors, and this is okay. Certainly the rotor pictured above was a plain type due to the racing class requirements it was entered in. The purpose of slots in the brake rotor is to

evacuate the waste material (dust) from the friction surfaces. The slots will ensure consistent friction performance throughout the life of the brake rotor and pad, whereas more scrutiny is required in friction material selection with plain surfaces to avoid surface glazing and declining friction performance. This leaves us with drilled or drilled and slotted. Drilled brake rotors are not recommended for track use of any kind, as the drill holes are focus points where stress and fatigue will accelerate and eventually result in crack formation. Drilled rotors have proven to improve braking performance on the street where normal driving conditions rarely exceed 250oC and stress is not a concern, however in motorsport applications drilled rotors are to be avoided. DBA says this is where its 4000 and 5000 Series rotors come in, stating that with their patented T3 slots, they offer the perfect design for race and track applications.

Thermal stability There are several treatments or processes applied to brake rotors marketed in the industry to achieve thermal stability, but not all of them lead to the same outcome. DBA explains that its 4000 and 5000 Series rotors undergo prolonged heat cycles under strictly controlled conditions, known as Thermal Stability Profiling (TSP), to relieve any internal stresses sustained from the manufacturing processes. The suspension in a vehicle separates the vehicle occupants from the ground and is paramount for safety. FROM WARRNAMBOOL TO THE WORLD

Kees Weel saw an opportunity to supply radiators to a market in need, and it would take him all the way to Formula One PWR’s Kees Weel was born in the Netherlands but came to Australia at a young age. His parents settled in the small dairy town of Timboon in country Victoria where Kees went to school. “I was basically not a very good school person,” Kees says. “I think the polite way of saying it was that I was asked not to come back.” Coming from a family of 11 children, Kees knew he couldn’t rely on the bank of Mum and Dad, and he had to learn to stand on his own two feet. He soon landed a job at Henderson Motors in the nearby town of Colac, where he completed his apprenticeship. “It was great, because back then they did everything. You would be pulling automatic transmissions apart; you would be reconditioning the engines, and everything was done inside those walls,” Kees says. “My first job, every day, was to sweep the floor and I am proud to say that in that period of time I wore out two brooms.” Recalling that his paycheck as a first-year apprentice was $17.25, of which he spent $10 on board, Kees’ plan was to take on the world when he eventually completed his apprenticeship. “I actually thought I knew everything. I was the biggest smart-arse there was. But I was starting to notice that you start learning after you finish your apprenticeship,” he reflects. After a short stint at Kraft Foods in Simpson working as their maintenance mechanic looking after milk tankers, Kees applied for a job on Bougainville Island, just near Papua New Guinea in a copper mine, at a town called Panguna. And he was lucky enough to get it. “I didn’t know a lot, as a country boy back in the ‘70s. You think, ‘Holy hell, what’s out there, what’s not?’ Not like the social media you have today,” Kees said. “You can Google anything, and get a pretty good answer, a pretty good idea of what’s where, but there was none of that information back then, and I had no real idea of where I was going. “I went over there as a diesel mechanic. I had never worked on a diesel before, and I thought I was so smart that I could bullsh*t my way through. And I did to some degree, but I learned very quickly.” Kees spent two years on Bougainville Island before Papua New Guinea declared its independence. 32

On his return he purchased his first business, a service station in Camperdown, and after a few years he bought a wreckers in Warrnambool, called McLean’s Auto Wreckers. Kees was one of the first wreckers to open on Sundays, and one thing he soon noticed was that there was a huge demand for radiators following weekend crashes. The business was doing extremely well fitting reconditioned radiators, but radiators were becoming harder to source. “I had a bit of a disagreement with a radiator supplier and I picked the radiator up and thought, ‘this cannot be that hard to make.’ So off I went and learned how to make radiator cores,” Kees explains. Kees knew Max Dumesny, who would become a legend of the local Warrnambool Speedway, and he also knew that Max’s father-in-law, Sid Moore, owned a small radiator factory in Sydney. “Sid supplied me some fin and some tube and some machines so I could make my own radiator core. So that’s how that started. And then I ventured further and went to America and bought more equipment, and later I was buying tube from America,” Kees says. He was soon selling radiators to customers in Melbourne and Sydney and Kees decided it was time to move on from the wreckers and set up shop making radiators full time.

After some research uncovered that the place where the most radiators in Australia were sold was between Coffs Harbour in New South Wales and the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Kees discovered 10 radiator shops between Southport and Tweed Heads. “I thought, ‘you know what, I could move here and I could have my own little show. Employ a couple of people and supply these 10 shops and have a pretty comfortable life.’ And so I moved up here in 1987, and it just went nuts. “People in Melbourne and people in Sydney were just all over me, wanting product. So we built a fairly substantial business here in the Gold Coast. We started off with one person. I employed a guy, just a kid, to help me in ‘87, and that guy – Tony Chowan – still works for me today on the factory floor.

“I think we have that longevity of looking after people. We have a lot of people here now. We have nearly 400 people of staff here today in Australia and 150 overseas.”

should set up a company together to start selling aluminium radiators to the V8 Supercars category and local people in Australia – and so, Paul Weel Radiators (PWR) was born.

While the business in Australia was going well, it was when Kees started visiting the US that things really took off.

They soon approached racing legend and team owner Larry Perkins and produced an aluminium radiator for him, which Larry declared as “rubbish.” But then in 1997, Paul competed at his first Bathurst 1000 in a Ford Falcon with a PWR aluminium radiator fitted. Network Ten commentator Leigh Diffey compiled a two-minute story on the team and its own radiators before the start of that race.

“We were getting a lot of raw material from America and I enjoyed going over there and meeting a lot of people in the radiator industry, globally and learning. And people would just tell me, ‘Oh, you’ve got to get to the aluminium.’ So I thought about it and there were hardly any aluminium radiators in Australia,” Kees says. In 1996 Kees installed an aluminium furnace, which turned out to be a very good business decision. Kees’ only son, Paul, was an apprentice machinist at the time, and his only real interest was racing motorbikes and cars. At 16 he had a big motorbike accident and broke both wrists, so Kees, trying to give him a future in business, suggested they

“After that it was nuts; it was just going through the roof. The following year we supplied HRT (the Holden Racing Team) and Stone Brothers with product for Bathurst, and HRT won the race and then that was it,” Kees says. Again, with the help of Leigh Diffey, Kees and Paul made contact with famous NASCAR team owner, Jack Roush, in the US and started supplying radiators.

PWR was soon supplying most of the NASCAR and IndyCar fields and eventually would go on to make aluminium radiators for Formula One, initially for Renault and eventually for Red Bull Racing. PWR went on to float on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2015 with the initial share price $1.50 – today it is a little over $10. PWR has recently set up a manufacturing factory in the town of Rugby in England to accompany its local facilities in Queensland and its Indianapolis factory in the States. Today at the age of 70 Kees continues to run PWR as Paul has stepped away to focus on his growing commercial real estate business. And he is still an advocate of employing the best people. “We have got (renowned Supercars team owner) Roland Dane now, as our chairman of our board, he is very motorsport orientated and has great industry knowledge, particularly in Europe – which is important as we now export over 90 percent of our product from here, and Europe’s a big taker of that,” Kees says. Away from the business, Kees’ biggest hobby is attending to his rather large car collection. “I have got an array of cars that I’ve collected. Mainly muscle cars in the ‘70s, as in XY GT Falcons and Monaros, and Bathurst Monaros, and XU1s and things like that,” Kees says. He also has other business interests outside of PWR. “We run a couple of regional large cattle properties and I’ve got a fairly large orange farm down at Mildura where we have 260,000 orange trees that certainly keep me busy,” he explains. It is Kees’ down to earth attitude that has always served him well, and continues to do so today. “I still enjoy the challenge; I love the challenge. As someone once told me, ‘You like getting sh*t done.’ And that’s what we do. We don’t stand back and think it is going to happen by itself. LubeWise recommended Red Line Motor Oil 10W60 due to its Full Synthetic Polyol Ester and Poly Alpha Olefin base oils with extra zinc (ZDDP) and very High Temperature High Shear Stability.

“The oil has a very high ‘natural’ Viscosity Index, ensuring it stays ‘in-grade’ in extreme loads and temperatures – therein providing the film thickness and pressure consistency needed in a F1 Judd engine.” LubeWise reports that subsequent dyno and racetrack testing offered very compelling and quite conclusive results. “Engine Management data was downloaded and emailed to Judd Engines in the UK. Judd responded enthusiastically saying they had never seen such strong oil pressures over a complete range of conditions, from idle to full power and extreme temperatures, in other Judd engines. They agreed that the Red Line Oil was instrumental in producing these outstanding results,” Troy said. “Based on such great performance and protection in his Formula One Judd engine, Dean decided to apply a similar Polyol Ester/PAO synthetic oil/High Zinc (2200 ppm ZDDP) formulation with Red Line Oils’ 10W-40 from their Powersport oil range in his Hyabusa supercharged engine Empire Wraith chassis Hill Climb open wheeler. “This engine oil has performed extremely well at what are eye-watering RPMs and in the extreme loads and oil surge issues that only Hill climb circuits can deliver.”

Dean went on to win the Australian Supersprint Championship in 2022 and Australian Hill Climb Championships in 2022, with both cars running Red Line Oils. “There is no doubting Dean Tighe’s immense talent as a racing driver and the quality of his racing cars. Lanotec Ambassador Jay Robotham and Cameron Hill put in a strong showing at the Repco Bathurst 1000 The number 35 Truck Assist-supported Chevrolet Camaro battled through the crown jewel event on the motorsport calendar to claim a solid points finish. With Lanotec emblazoned on the front bumper of the car, the Matt Stone Racing prepared machine looked quick throughout race week. The event started off with solid times in the six onehour-long practice sessions, including sixth overall for the pair in Friday’s practice three, and sixth for Jay Robotham in the final co-driver-only session on Saturday morning, mixing it with the major players of the sport.

In Friday afternoon’s 40-minute qualifying session, Cameron Hill placed the car 14th on the grid, one place ahead of teammate Jack Le Brocq. The race saw the combination start well behind the eight ball, with a clutch issue on the formation lap seeing the car head to the pits prior to lights out, with a speedy bleed of the system seeing the Camaro hit the circuit 30 seconds behind the field. From there, battling with a clutch that was only 30 percent effective, Jay and Cameron fought valiantly throughout the day, also battling double stacking in the pits during the early safety car appearances. Somewhat off sequence with the field at times, the pair were able to elevate themselves into the top ten regularly throughout the 161-lap classic. On lap 24, the car stopped from 13th position, then 11th on lap 39, position nine on lap 62, while with Jay behind the wheel, the crew found themselves in third place on lap 74, battling with the ultimate podium trio of Brodie Kostecki/David Russell, Anton De Pasquale/Tony D’Alberto, and the race-winning car of Shane van Gisbergen/Richie Stanaway. In the remaining three stops of the race, the number

35 machine pitted from seventh, seventh and sixth, although the lack of safety cars in the second half of the race conspired against the team, as they claimed 15th position after 1000km, remaining on the lead lap throughout. The result for Jay was three positions better than his debut Bathurst 1000 start in 2022. “I’m happy to finish 15th in the Bathurst 1000,” Jay said. “We didn’t make the grid due to a clutch issue, which was something we had to manage throughout the whole race, but we fought back. “A big thank you to the Matt Stone Racing crew and Cameron Hill for having me this enduro season.” For more from Lanotec, visit www.lanotec.com.au
