“Um edifício é um edifício é um edifício é um edifício”, lembrando a poetisa Gertrude Stein e seu verso mais citado: “Uma rosa é ...”.

Isabel Furini, escritora e educadora, faz uma linda análise do poema de Stein2 e, numa analogia ao seu texto, podemos afirmar que um edifício, de qualquer ângulo que o observador veja, é um edifício. Porém, as palavras têm sonoridade e costumam revelar o cerne do conceito. Ao dizê-las, nossa mente associa os dados dos sentidos – espaço, imagem – e desperta emoções, sendo uma delas o sentido de lugar.

A criação de lugares atraentes para as pessoas surgiu como conceito raiz na década de 1960, quando as ideias de Jane Jacobs e William H. Whyte enfatizaram a necessidade de um bom projeto de cidade para os cidadãos. Os processos históricos e contemporâneos de formação do lugar passaram por diferentes contextos naturais, culturais e têm um efeito significativo sobre a natureza e qualidades do espaço3. À medida que as pessoas continuam a experimentar um distanciamento emocional cada vez maior, com o caráter e a identidade em evolução dos espaços urbanos em que vivem, Carvalho Araújo intui com seriedade uma ligação emocional com o ambiente construído, derruba muros, cria espaços inclusivos, percebe o entorno e faz a conexão entre eles.

Novos empreendimentos são frequentemente acusados de não conseguirem alcançar um sentido distinto de lugar. Carvalho Araújo rompe com essa assertividade em seus projetos ao criar entidades físicas e estéticas com configurações comportamentais, respondendo com sensibilidade ao ambiente circundante. Leva em conta a natureza do ser humano, suas culturas e as características que o definem; constrói, física e conceitualmente, uma ligação entre essas singularidades, seus valores e objetivos. São espaços atraentes que nos instigam à identificação com a materialidade do objeto e nos levam a outros lugares, às forças que se acumulam animadas pelos nossos desejos e medos... personificação perfeita da própria condição de existência. Ele nos obriga a uma reelaboração da experiência estética, daquilo que constitui a aisthesis, as sensorialidades experimentadas e uma reconfiguração no âmbito da poética, entendida como a dimensão produtora dessas sensibilidades – as maneiras de fazer, a poiesis. É a percepção de um sintoma capturado por circuitos regenerativos mútuos, desejos gerando imagens e imagens gerando desejos. Desenhar desejo, lembra W. J. T. Mitchell em seu livro What do pictures want?, significa não só a descrição de uma figura ou espaço que se apresenta para tal, mas também indica a maneira como o próprio desenho é a performance dele. São posturas escolhidas pelo arquiteto, criações estéticas e políticas.

O desafio é sempre como se colocar no mundo, como se relacionar com as tendências em jogo e adotar posturas críticas para que os novos modos não se tornem o instituinte, o elemento ordenador. E é isso que Carvalho Araújo faz: uma preensão do objeto estético no espaço, nos corpos, nos gestos e nas posturas para evitar a captura por regimes escópicos constituídos, pelos sistemas de produção e legitimação que se apressam em enquadrar aquilo que tenta escapar.

Claro que é sempre um jogo, uma tentativa de fazer fugir, traçar linhas que, estando nas bordas, possam perturbar a distribuição sensível dos lugares e das funções relançadas em novas condições de experiência e modificadas por uma produção que se abre ao que não estava esquadrinhado e enquadrado como ordenação do ver e viver. Ele desenha formas de sensibilidade e percepções do espaço, propondo uma ampliação de possíveis. Possibilidades que são, frequentemente, deixadas de lado por operações consensuais que estipulam o que é apreciável e legitimado.

Daí advém a sua prática política, na medida em que faz ver o que cabe ser visto e pensado como arquitetura e espaço urbano. Nesse caminho, a política não é um socorro prestado à área, mas uma modalidade própria de criar mundos sensíveis.

Ao gerir a relação entre os dois campos – arquitetura e política –, não faria sentido enveredar pelo caminho de submeter um a outro, pois tanto arquitetura quanto política vão se ocupar dos mesmos problemas da vida em comunidade. Trata-se, em ambos os campos, de saber o que se pode fazer com o tempo, como ocupar espaços no mundo, que possibilidades de vivência comunal podem ser produzidas, que cenas podem ser criadas e que pensamento urbano pode ser considerado na constituição do comum. É com essas potências que Carvalho Araújo trabalha.

Preface Carvalho Araújo and his aesthetic Silas de Paula 1 “A building is a building is a building is a building”– remembering poet Gertrude Stein and her most quoted verse “A rose is...”.

Isabel Furini, writer and educator, makes a beautiful analysis of Stein’s poem2 and, in analogy to her text, we can claim that a building, from whichever angle one sees it, is a building. However, words resonate and often reveal the core of the concept.

By saying them, our mind combines the data of the senses – space, image – and awakes emotions, one of them being the sense of place.

The creation of appealing places for people emerged as a root concept in the 1960s, when the ideas of Jane Jacobs and William H. Whyte emphasized the need for a good city project aimed at citizens. The historic and contemporary processes responsible for shaping the place have gone through different natural, cultural contexts and have a significative effect on the nature and qualities of the space3.

As people continue experiencing an ever-growing emotional distancing, with the 7

evolving character and identity of the urban spaces in which they live, Carvalho Araújo earnestly senses an emotional connection with the built environment, breaks down walls, creates inclusive spaces, understands the surrounding area, and creates a connection between them.

New developments are often accused of not being able to achieve a distinctive sense of place. Carvalho Araújo breaks with this assertiveness in his projects by creating physical and aesthetic entities with behavioral features, reacting to the surrounding environment in a sensitive manner. He considers the nature of humanity, its cultures and defining characteristics; he builds, physically and conceptually, a connection between these singular features, its values and goals.

These appealing spaces encourage us to identify with the material nature of the object and take us to other places, to accumulating forces, motivated by our desires and fears... the perfect personification of the condition of existence itself.

He makes us rework the aesthetical experience, what makes up the aisthesis, the sensorialitites experienced and a reconfiguration at the poetical level, perceived as the dimension which produces such sensitivities – the ways of doing things, the poiesis. It’s the perception of a symptom captured by mutual, regenerative circuits, desires generating images and images generating desires. As W. J. T. Mitchell reminds us in his book What do pictures want?, drawing desire means not only the description of a figure or space which presents itself to this end, but also shows how the drawing itself is its own performance. These are stances adopted by the architect – political and aesthetic creations.

The challenge is always how to place oneself in the world, how to engage with the trends in play and adopt critical stances so that the new ways do not become

imposing, the authoritative element. This is what Carvalho Araújo does: a grip on the aesthetical object in the space, bodies, gestures and stances to avoid being captured by established scopic regimes, by production and legitimizing systems which rush to frame the elements trying to escape.

This is obviously always a gamble, an attempt to force something to escape, to draw lines on the edges which may disrupt the sensitive arrangement of the places and functions relaunched into new experience conditions and changed by a production process which opens itself up to possibilities beyond what was dictated and framed as the ordainment of the act of seeing and living. He draws sensitive shapes and space perceptions, providing an expansion of possibilities. These possibilities are often left out by consensual operations which dictate what can be appreciated and legitimized. This explains his political practice, in so far as it makes us see what needs to be seen and thought of as architecture and urban space. In this path, politics are not a rescue to the area, but a modality in itself, capable of creating sensitive worlds. When managing the relationship between the two fields – architecture and politics –, it would not make sense to embark upon a path which entails the subjugation of one field to the other, since both architecture and politics will deal with the same problems created by community life. In both fields, it is about knowing what one can do with time, how to take over spaces throughout the world, which possibilities of community life can be produced, which settings can be created, and which forms of urban thinking can be considered while building the ordinary.

It is with these capabilities that Carvalho Araújo works with.

Esta publicação retoma um trabalho editorial anterior, desenvolvido em 2009, para o qual produzi um conjunto de textos acerca do trabalho do atelier Carvalho Araújo, e reproduz, tal como na publicação anterior, um convite que se traduz simplesmente na produção de uma reflexão pessoal acerca de um repertório de obras de reconhecido mérito deste atelier. É-me confiado esse testemunho original num panorama onde já lemos tão vasta e qualificada crítica sobre o seu trabalho. É sobre esse convite-desafio que versa esta publicação, o qual agradeço reconhecidamente.

Dedicada exclusivamente à Arquitectura, esta publicação aborda alguns projectos recentes em Portugal, mas também, e de uma forma mais ampla, um significativo conjunto de trabalhos desenvolvidos no Brasil, evidenciando como esse contexto colocou novos desafios e, simultaneamente, ofereceu uma outra escala de acção e visibilidade ao atelier. Nessa edição de 2009, a dada altura, levantava-se a questão da então recente influência do Brasil como destino e como prática projectual.

Decorridos alguns anos, essa evocação brasileira deixou de ser um desejo e uma 11

provocação, tornando-se uma confirmação.

Paradoxalmente, não é apenas esse momento expansionista e de acção em contextos mais exigentes que garante o seu sucesso e o reconhecimento crescente, mas a manutenção do modelo de abordagem e a forma de projectar de sempre.

Além da convicção e da persistência, é o permanente prazer em pensar e concretizar o que mais se nota neste percurso recente do atelier.

Reservo para este final de apresentação um capítulo inicial onde tudo está ancorado e onde arrisco um testemunho pessoal sobre a pessoa que se mistura com o arquitecto, alguns mitos e considerações que são e estão na base do processo que constrói este repertório de obras e lugares, onde a imagem nunca chega para o seu próprio debate e conhecimento. É, como diz o próprio Carvalho Araújo, “tudo feito com prazer, muito empenho e amor”. É também com enorme dedicação que me debruço sobre estas obras e lugares e, acima de tudo, é com muito prazer que olho o tempo vasto que sustenta este desenho que me serviu de escola.

This publication resumes a previous editorial work, developed in 2009, for which I produced a set of texts about the work of the Carvalho Araújo studio, and reproduces, as in the previous publication, an invitation which simply results in the production of a personal reflection about a work repertoire of recognized merit by this studio. I am entrusted with this original testimony, having already read such vast and notable reviews of its work. The publication is about this invitationchallenge, which I gratefully appreciate.

Exclusively devoted to Architecture, this publication addresses some recent projects in Portugal, but also, and more broadly, a significant body of work developed in Brazil, showing how this context posed new challenges and, simultaneously, offered another scale of action and visibility to the studio. In the 2009 edition, at a certain point, the question of Brazil’s then recent influence as a destination and projectual practice was raised. A few years later, this Brazilian evocation was no longer a desire and provocation, but a confirmation.

Paradoxically, it is not only this expansion and action moment in more demanding contexts which guarantees its success and growing recognition, but also the maintenance of the approach model and the traditional way of designing. Besides conviction and persistence, the permanent pleasure of thinking and achieving is what is most noticeable in this recent journey of the studio.

For the end of this presentation, I save an initial chapter where everything is anchored and where I risk a personal testimony about the person who blends with the architect, some myths and considerations which are the basis of the process responsible for building this repertoire of works and places, where the image is never enough for its own debate and knowledge. It is, as Carvalho Araújo himself says, "all done with pleasure, great commitment and love".

It is also with enormous dedication that I look at these works and places and, above all, it is with great pleasure that I gaze upon the vast time that sustains this drawing which I learned from.

Processo Process

Para entendermos a arquitectura do atelier Carvalho Araújo, importa conhecer os bastidores do projecto, a ansiedade, o inconformismo, a confiança e a naturalidade que presidem a esse modo de operar. Estes são traços identitários do autor, que se estendem por uma equipa de trabalho mais vasta e se manifestam nas obras ao longo do tempo. Assumo a arriscada tarefa de os abordar, em modo retrospectivo e informal, para melhor enquadrar o que nos é dado a conhecer e esse mistério do que se esconde por trás da obra. Mas é apenas uma aproximação!

Personagem O autor investe num desempenho político, alguém que cria e gere as condições certas para o aparecimento do seu trabalho, pressentindo a oportunidade e, inclusivamente, arriscando um eventual confronto com o tema quando tal aparenta ser merecedor de ponderação e alteração. Este estado de maturidade crítica é credor tanto de uma diplomacia projectual exigente quanto de uma estratégia coerente e distinta. Estas características derivam de uma precisão 15

metodológica natural no complemento ao desenho e que, no seu todo, constituem

porque, se o modo de pensar o projecto é menos convencional, este carece de maior explicação e demonstração, de um discurso mais objectivo e aplicado à realidade. É aqui que esse sinal do entendimento ocorre, quando autor e cliente partilham o mesmo sentido e se esbatem os limites do papel de cada um, gerando tantas vezes novas narrativas explicativas da origem do projecto. Esse ritual de actuação do arquitecto, sendo tão natural e despretensioso, fica disponível à imaginação e ao preenchimento dessas pequenas histórias, expandindo as virtudes do acto criativo bem além do domínio do projecto.

To understand the architecture of the Carvalho Araújo studio, it is important to know the backstage of the project, the anxiety, the non-conformism, the confidence and the naturalness which preside over this way of operating.

These are the author's identifying traits, which extend over a larger work team and manifest themselves in each work over time. I take on the risky task of approaching them, in a retrospective and informal manner, to better frame what we discover and the mystery of what is hidden behind the work. But this is only an approximation!

Character The author invests in a political performance, someone who creates and manages the right conditions for the emergence of his work, sensing opportunities and even risking a possible confrontation with the theme when it seems worthy of consideration and change. This state of critical maturity is due as much to a demanding projectual diplomacy as to a coherent and distinct strategy. These characteristics derive from a natural methodological precision in the complement to the drawing and, as a whole, make up the true project, responding to a complex conduct and management of expectations, availabilities, constraints and future.

These moments are responsible for the production of a wider understanding of the project, measurable through the legitimation and evidence offered by time, for 20

the time where the idea takes place cannot be just promise and shelter, as it always includes risk as a partner.

Dissatisfaction If there is a characteristic which clearly defines the profile of the author when confronted with the challenges presented by the work, it is the permanent dissatisfaction which occurs during this project journey. Dissatisfaction in the sense of demanding more, repeatedly more, of himself and of what the work can offer and achieve. The motivation which derives from this state of enrichment is a distinctive and fundamental factor, close to a certain optimism which rules his spirit and related to a remarkable conviction in his response. Responsible for the unfolding of attention in the search for paths hidden by the project or which convention tries to suppress, this dissatisfaction takes the form of ambition when faced with the challenge of the project. If, on the one hand, it allows us to provoke the imagination, the limits, the expectations of the client and the program, on the other, it demands a complex management of the emotional swings which derive from it, supporting a certain succession of enthusiasms and the way they infect others, giving rise to an anxiety as natural as it is necessary for those who share the process.

The so-called Process The process is treated here as a way of doing – a way of being and the way this composite makes up the basis from which creation and work are faced and treated. Carvalho Araújo is, I dare say, passionate about the process, about the project across the breadth of its existence but, in particular, about the initial phase of encounter and seduction with "the thing" – the desire, the program, the place and the client. It is a very particular way of taking on and interpreting the challenges presented to him, regardless of whether they are more or less close to the conventional project, or simply the production of a critical and creative reasoning about something. And this is how the process is treated, beyond the conventionalized or typical dimension taught and practiced by the drawing. It is an act which draws on the entire emotional repertoire of stimuli, excitement, fantasy, and speculation to move reason a little beyond its usual place. This process is not smooth, nor is it without upsets, but creates a certain praxis which, 21

A deambulação crítica acerca da tipologia deste edifício é permanente desde o aparecimento da obra na paisagem pela dificuldade em “arrumar” o edifício numa qualquer categoria convencionada pelo uso e pelo tempo. Talvez parte dessa dificuldade derive do facto de este reunir um conjunto de usos-funções que, embora tradicionalmente emparelhados, assumem uma escala e hierarquia atípica que confere ao edifício esse lado esquivo na sua classificação.

E é necessária essa taxonomia? Obviamente que não, mas a necessidade de o compreender leva a que procuremos estabelecer uma matriz que o defina. Esta frase do autor do projecto é reveladora a esse respeito: “Ninguém consegue identificar ou posicionar o projecto numa determinada tipologia. É um projecto de arquitectura.

Um bom projecto de arquitectura.”1 Recuando à origem do projecto, encontramos a intenção de se construir “um percurso na paisagem”. Esta expressão, da autoria do arquitecto Carvalho Araújo, espelha bem o estímulo para esta obra, que assenta num programa claramente invulgar e arriscado por não dar ênfase à versão convencional da construção. A ideia do referido percurso deriva de uma leitura do território e de como a arquitectura poderia proporcionar novos usos ao espaço, sem um vínculo particular a uma qualquer função convencionada. Era a valorização da informalidade e da fruição sensível do lugar a tomar a primazia da abordagem projectual e em torno da qual o restante programa foi sendo desenhado e construído.

Desta conquista programática emerge uma cozinha distinta e um espaço para refeições, conjunto a que poderemos designar por restaurante. Esse seria o núcleo fundador do programa, que posteriormente se harmonizou em torno dessa função, ao qual foi acrescentado um reduzido conjunto de quartos (três, inicialmente) que pudessem albergar um público constituído unicamente por convidados do proprietário. É nesses espaços privados que podem ser testados, in loco, os produtos têxteis com marca própria, continuados pela existência de um showroom contíguo onde os produtos têxteis poderiam ser experimentados e conhecidos. Falamos então, se nos permitirmos o referido vício da categorização, de uma grande casa de hóspedes, perfeitamente autónoma e desenhada como produto de sucesso, arrumada sob um sinuoso e extenso plano que exibe a originalidade daquele duplo percurso, interior e exterior, através da cobertura.

Esta primeira incursão à radiografia programática do edifício explica parte da liberdade que encontramos na atitude e no gesto da arquitectura para lhe dar

forma, escala e significado. O território é bonito, interessante, ligeiramente elevado face às vinhas circundantes, mas também não é um lugar de extraordinária beleza! É um sítio bonito que ganhou beleza e preponderância pela presença da arquitectura daquele edifício, que interpretou as características locais de topografia, orientação visual e até de sensibilidade, naquele alheamento pacato que oferece à vinha e ao vinho sossego, tempo e delicadeza para serem algo bom e natural.

O edifício replica esse sentido de pertença, embora se afaste, naturalmente, de sistemas construtivos locais. Essa não é uma discussão levantada sequer; e bem, porque a ousadia formal do edifício e o objectivo de se “fundir” no terreno dificilmente encontrariam nos materiais tradicionais o virtuosismo técnico e plástico do betão. O programa induz uma ruptura formal, mas pressupõe a inclusão daquela tranquilidade autóctone. A forma sinuosa do edifício foge dos parâmetros de audácia formal para dar destaque e sentido a uma ideia de percurso contínuo a uma mesma cota de nível, serpenteando o monte e esquivando-se sempre do olhar para desaparecer numa nova torção ou curva, aliviando assim a real dimensão da sua presença. É um recurso projectual rico que cria divisões naturalmente, deixando a sucessão dos espaços, sem a necessidade de existência de um limite físico explícito. Essa ideia de contornarmos o terreno, nesse jogo de vazios e torções que nos impelem o olhar para pontos de vista distintos, exponencia uma certa ideia de linearidade comum e de eventual encurtamento programático que se pode ler a partir da fachada principal. Essa dimensão global é apenas sugerida no interior, através desse percurso sinuoso que respeita e obedece à presença incontornável da rocha. No entanto, a verdadeira apropriação da escala real do edifício acontece na leitura do percurso pela cobertura, podendo esta ser considerada a sua maior sala ou divisão. Aí, a extensão da plataforma sugere claramente um convite à permanência, enquanto denuncia esse percurso que contraria a discrição que encontramos no interior, onde a fluidez do espaço é fisicamente condicionada à medida que nos aproximamos das áreas mais íntimas e reservadas.

Noutro sentido, a impressionante fachada frontal denuncia como o edifício se valoriza através das torções e dos pátios que interrompem o envidraçado contínuo, mas é o alçado posterior, discreto e menos dado à vista, que denuncia de forma mais evidente e honesta a cumplicidade do edifício com o terreno. É também importante percebermos e reconhecermos como é nesse espaço de maior reserva e 29

intimidade que encontramos a luz mais expressiva, desmontando o mistério dessa

relação inseparável. A nova construção descola e prende-se à rocha, assim como dá corpo a uma noção de conforto e acolhimento nesse recuo. Os pátios interiores, sobrantes, desmontam a ideia aparente de um edifício totalmente enterrado no solo e essa feliz falsidade evidencia muito mais que o já de si audaz encosto e refúgio sob o solo para reintroduzir a presença dos pátios interiores, tão cara ao arquitecto, aqui disfarçados de brechas ocasionais no terreno. A intersecção da rocha no edifício e a forma como lhe é permitido “invadir” o espaço interior é um forte indício de desenho e do modo de encarar o desenho do espaço, numa clara intenção de respeitar o terreno e de o tornar um elemento-chave da arquitectura num formato domesticado e inclusivo.

Especular com o tempo Recupero a frase de Françoise Choay, “As ruínas têm direito inalienável à sua própria inutilidade…”2, para levantar a questão: como resistirá este edifício à lei do tempo? Fixando o edifício enquanto fazemos a aproximação até ao seu interior, percebemos que o confronto da arquitectura com o tempo ultrapassa a sua relação com as gentes que o viram nascer e o acarinham. Isto remete para o nosso papel de leitores da história, não numa perspectiva retroactiva, mas de projecção no tempo, tentando perceber como nos relacionamos com o espaço e os edifícios de forma distinta quando assumimos que “o seu tempo já passou”. Mas é nesse limbo ficcional que podemos antecipar e testar o que se nos depara, como um grande atlas da memória a que recorremos por analogia e crítica para anteciparmos o lugar do outro. Não que qualquer construção não o possa ser em potência, mas essa noção de perenidade assaltou-me de uma forma bastante evidente neste caso, o de ser em simultâneo um edifício de carácter fortíssimo, uma espécie de corpo fechado que é mais disciplinador de vontade que o contrário. O facto de se estabelecer como continuidade do monte, nessa solidez material que o betão lhe confere, situado num pequeno promontório, empresta-lhe uma atitude ambígua, mas não conflituosa: o edifício exibe-se nessa vaidade formal, com uma beleza atípica que conseguiu emergir de uma desafiante realidade, mas adopta simultaneamente um desenho, escala e apagamento como se se quisesse reclamar parte integrante daquele território desde sempre. Olhamos o edifício e desafiamos a nossa imaginação num exercício especulativo de o submeter a uma prova de resistência ao uso e às pessoas; ao abandono até. Esse destino não é desejável, 32

O percurso pedonal através da cobertura demonstra a intenção de o edifício não se constituir como obstáculo na paisagem, mas sim como potenciador de novos usos e novas formas de acesso e fruição do espaço elevado.

A cobertura acessível materializa “o percurso na paisagem”, constituindo uma enorme e sinuosa plataforma, cuja morfologia só aí se dá a perceber integralmente. A laje de betão desenha uma forma subtil e orgânica que liga todo o programa que se esconde sob a mesma.

The footpath through the roof demonstrates the building's intention not to become an obstacle in the landscape, but rather an enabler of new uses and new ways to access and enjoy the elevated space.

The accessible roof materializes "the path in the landscape", making up a huge and winding platform, whose morphology can only be fully perceived there. The concrete slab draws a subtle and organic form which connects the entire program hidden underneath it.

porque esta nova construção possui um carácter não público, mais reservado que o espaço precedente. É neste gesto de estender edifícios, mas acima de tudo acessos e percursos no jardim, que se aumenta e expande o programa da Galeria sem furtar espaço ou protagonismo ao terreno e à individualidade de cada construção.

Esta individualidade é garantida também porque, em cada uma destas fases de construção, é estabelecida uma cota de implantação distinta das demais, pelo que a cobertura do edifício situado mais abaixo se aproxima parcial ou aparentemente da cota de soleira do corpo seguinte, tal como sucedeu na implantação inicial da Galeria face ao edifício preexistente. Esta “escada” de construções não é dada a perceber em todos os momentos de leitura, mas é algo que se descobre através do percurso e de uma observação mais atenta e distante. Tal gradação de cotas e afastamento entre edifícios garante a respiração necessária entre os elementos e a manutenção de uma ideia de contenção construtiva, de certo modo ajustada ao ambiente doméstico do lugar, e, acima de tudo, uma liberdade espacial que está intimamente relacionada com a liberdade que o desenho aproveitou para conferir uma poética singular à intervenção.

Intriga internacional Além de todo o debate e análise crítica que esta obra possa suscitar, é interessante perceber como uma Galeria com reputação e reconhecimento internacional se aloja num edifício tão local e dissimuladamente doméstico. Mas esta é uma intriga humorada e inofensiva! O que é apreciável nesse dilema é a capacidade e o acerto de, provavelmente, esse ter sido um dos segredos para a peculiaridade e originalidade bucólica da Galeria. Ser local e simultaneamente internacional, piscando o olho ao passado recente da nossa arquitectura face ao Modernismo, com tão bons exemplos que o norte do país oferece por vizinhança. É essa época de sensibilidade e atenção aos momentos mais ricos da arquitectura, do seu ritual de utilização e partilha, que podemos ver aqui, nesta obra, e agora de forma reforçada.

O regresso ao desenho mais lento e local que a ampliação da Galeria demonstra é, acima de tudo, um respeito enorme por um sistema de regras implícitas e explícitas que o projecto inicial deixou para o futuro. Este salto estratégico foi dado lá atrás, no início, como sucede em quase todas as obras do Carvalho Araújo. O que esta nos mostra em particular é que, por ter mais tempo e necessidade, o regresso 59

ao projecto e ao lugar fez recuperar a matriz que estava criada desde então.

Sometimes the complicity which architecture establishes with time is surprising.

I find myself thinking that the way it reacts and manifests itself over time depends a lot on its qualities or defects, which time will try to accentuate or mitigate according to the evolution of the way in which we begin to look at and deal with space and buildings. I even risk saying that time will improve "good architecture" and will act in the opposite way before "not so good architecture"!

It is a risky assumption, but if we take a brief trip down memory lane of what we have seen, known and valued, we realize that the cases which continue to be worthy of our admiration emerge and stand out as good examples of this practice.

I go back to a text I wrote some years ago for a monograph of the Carvalho Araújo studio about the Mário Sequeira Gallery, where the boldness of the writing sought to replicate the boldness of the drawing and initiative. At that time, the Gallery stood out as a beautiful architectural project, discreetly located on the outskirts of the city of Braga and unnoticedly housed underground as a way of engaging with the existing building which marked the name and the territory. The current Gallery is simply not the same in face of the virtues and wrinkles of time. The Gallery has grown, has new associated buildings which have inherited the same discipline and drawing method defined from its inception by the author. This coherence, already strong and important, ensures the naturalness which runs through the "various times" of the building as a whole. The primary quality we see highlighted in this work is a consequence of maintaining the initial identity of the project. Today, after several years, we can read the ensemble with healthy doubt, as if these two buildings had been conceived and built at the same time. This doubt is proof of the coherence and maintenance of the qualities we admire and appreciate. Today's Gallery, after the difficult gestation process, fulfills a need for physical growth which is a result of its institutional growth and pertinence in the international art scene. The Gallery has that international, referential purpose which has found in this building a place that perfectly serves its practical operation needs, while taking advantage of the stature and project originality to give it a distinct profile, whose drawing is also based on architecture.

The successive years of exhibition, action and relationship with time and people are years of recognition which make it untouchable in the ensemble of reference works of our architecture. But to understand the Gallery in the author's particular ensemble is to discover a certain mutation in the language of the works, not in the methodology or way of studying them, but in the way they are conceived and built, possibly related to technical issues. However, what interests me is to understand the Gallery as a perfect example of an architecture very much connoted with its own way of designing, more discreet in its attributes and at the same time bold when it comes to emphasizing the key moments which mark the use of the spaces. The Gallery is a good architectural lesson in dealing with pre-existences, with the plot, with an imprecise program, with the landscape, and especially with time, ensuring that when this time of growth and expansion arrived, and if it did, the space would not be closed or limited, but rather educated and able to evolve according to a drawing matrix which ensures the coherence of the building in its various dimensions and phases over time.

The simplicity and beauty of the Gallery lives much from the drawing of the pathway and the rhythm established between movement and permanence. The alternation between ramps, stairs, and rooms which mirror new stairs and new ramps creates a continuous pathway between the outside and the inside, giving the illusion of a small and elementary program. Both are correct; the program is simple and self-evident, without mysteries. These can instead be seen in its provocation and construction from scratch through architecture by concealing pathways between planes and hiding large spaces beneath the ground after we access them through entrances which are eminently domestic in scale. This domestic profile binds the building to the place and frees the outside towards a drawing dimension which gives it a larger dimension as a project. We cannot simply appreciate the all-encompassing space, which gives the equipment a function, but the branched, tentacular drawing which grasps particular moments and places in the property. This drawing priority prevailed when it came to adding a new building to the previous one. Necessarily detached, or not intimately connected with the existing space, the new building repeats the pathway and concealment strategy beneath the ground to give continuity to the identity created at the time of 65

the first and largest intervention. This is the gesture which gives it coherence, but

the project and the place helped restore the matrix which was created since then.

Curiously, and remembering those distant times of the first phase of the Gallery, I would hardly have imagined that such a delicate ensemble, due to the pathways and the way it fitted in the plot, would be able to accommodate an expansion in such a coherent way, as if it had been conceived and designed at the same time.

This acts as a compliment towards naturalness and, today, the Gallery is even more adjusted to a profile of architectural expertise and originality but complemented with a praiseworthy predisposition and demonstration when it comes to gaining widespread acceptance and knowing how to live with time.

Reparar com a justa demora no projecto da Montaria é revisitar uma abordagem tantas vezes repetida pelo arquitecto Carvalho Araújo e, no entanto, nova no modo de se relacionar com a envolvente, nessa repetida abordagem apaixonada de se esconder e fundir com o ambiente natural e com o lugar. Saltando a parte evidente dessa lição, entre a (des)afinidade com a escala das construções vizinhas, a sua robustez e materialidade, entre as referências aos tanques comunitários da aldeia e a forma como sustentam conceptualmente este projecto, foco-me no teatro do desempenho, no uso e no lugar simbólico de algumas opções. Acredito, pelo que está construído e pelo que foi testemunhado, que a posição do cliente para a definição do programa fosse, no mínimo, apaixonada e focada na envolvente e nesse programa económico e reduzido.

A partir daqui, é uma especulação ilimitada, mas há evidências e seduções irresistíveis que nos conduzem a uma pequena reflexão.

Há algo que prevalece e domina a leitura desta casa neste lugar perante um cenário e uma geografia um tanto ou quanto severa – a evidente desproporção entre a escala da casa e a Serra d’Arga, que se ergue como uma enorme parede, reduzindo tudo o que nos envolve a uma dimensão humilde, não frágil, mas muito contida. A austeridade e autoridade da Serra, tão próxima e invulgar, precipitada verticalmente sobre nós, gera uma noção distinta do que, por norma, associamos à noção de bela paisagem, onde a fuga visual se expande no horizonte e nos é permitida uma amplitude infinita face ao constrangimento visual a que nos habituamos nos cenários quotidianos. Aqui, essa profundidade esbarra numa espécie de abraço apertado, tão próximo que nos obriga a olhar na vertical, antecipando a relação de intimidade que a casa reproduz nesse recolhimento programático e funcional através do projecto. Se o lugar é determinante e esmagador, é a “casa-mínima” que lhe empresta a hipérbole na perfeição. Importa proteger o espaço, a privacidade, o domínio face ao exterior, onde esse desafio da intimidade ocorre por via da diferença de cotas de alguns arruamentos e propriedades confrontantes. Mas o verdadeiro desafio é o de enfrentar a Serra, para nos darmos à contemplação, quase absurda de tão forte e bela. Poderse-á até afirmar que a piscina procura uma posição superior mais exposta para assim contrariar esse esmagamento visual, bem com para permitir a melhor fruição da paisagem. Essa pequena liberdade contraria a ideia de recolhimento,

To take a fairly long look at the Montaria project is to revisit an approach so often repeated by architect Carvalho Araújo and yet new in the way it engages with its surrounding area, in this repeated passionate approach of hiding and merging with the natural environment and the place. Skipping the obvious part of this lesson, between the (dis)affinity with the scale of the nearby constructions, their robustness and materiality, between the references to the community tanks of the village and the way they conceptually sustain this project, I focus on the performance theater, the use and the symbolic place of some options. I believe, from what is built and what has been witnessed, that the client's position when it came to defining the program was, at the very least, passionate and focused on the surrounding area and this economic and reduced program. From here, speculation is unlimited, but there is irresistible evidence and seduction which leads us to a brief reflection.

There is something that prevails and rules the reading of this house in this place before a somewhat severe setting and geography – the obvious disproportion between the scale of the house and Serra d'Arga, which rises like an enormous wall, reducing everything that surrounds us to a humble dimension, not fragile, but very contained. The austerity and authority of the mountains, so close and unusual, leaning vertically above us, generates a distinct notion of what we usually associate with the concept of a beautiful landscape, where the visual escape expands on the horizon and we are allowed an infinite amplitude in face of the visual constraint we are used to in our daily scenarios. Here, this depth runs into a sort of tight embrace, so close that it forces us to look vertically, anticipating the intimate relationship the house reproduces in this programmatic and functional retreat through the project.

If the place is instrumental and overwhelming, the "minimal house" is the perfect hyperbole. It is important to protect the space, the privacy, and the domain from the outside, where this intimacy challenge occurs due the level difference of some opposite properties and streets. But the real challenge is to face the mountains, to give in to contemplation, almost absurd due to their great strength and beauty.

One could even say that the pool seeks a more exposed and elevated position to counteract this visual crushing, as well as to allow a better enjoyment of the landscape. This little freedom contradicts the idea of seclusion but represents the desirable exchange and balance in face of the limit imposed on us by nature. As we

walk across the plot, around the house, we become fond of the apparent miniature which can be perceived by the peculiar but correct volumetric proportion, where a certain history of the author's own architecture is revisited as some sort of model, in a village where most of the buildings reproduce the local construction identity and where some examples, though few, deviate from what time and tradition have taught us. However, this house, admittedly different from that matrix, respects the local discretion and silence, integrates itself and hides under the appearance of a new community tank like so many others which have responded and given memory to that place.

The idea of retreat takes us to a sort of gap in time, an interruption or something temporary and out of routine, an escape from something or towards something better, which compensates and aligns us with that very same time. In this way of inhabiting and understanding this architecture, we find a subtle approximation to Heidegger's hut, where existential conflicts with time emerge1, just like the return to one's roots, a sort of simplification against utilitarianism and the rhythm of the present time.

It was under this place-home-refuge perspective that this project was conceived and built to take on the character of house-therapy. Essentially as a result of its temporary purpose, this work places the subject in the center of the dialogue with the outside, and it is obvious how it is oriented and organized in order to emphasize the users' well-being, whether in the form of landscape, silence, intimacy, or reduction, in balance with the appreciation of moments which are conquered in the experiences linked to the use of this house.

The house-retreat implies a predisposition to reflection, to the idea of peace and quiet. If we can amusingly call it a house-remedy, we also see that we are in the presence of an excellent home appliance in stark opposition to the gadget: it has the essential and nonessential without giving in to uselessness! From the bed and the introspective patio to the pool and the extrovert and expansionist terrace, the space – contained at the area and program levels – expands in face of the relationship and fusion it offers with the surrounding area. Exquisite and refined in its furnishings and space organization, the house proves to be healthily exhibitionist and vain on 93

the roof, where an envious swimming pool dominates the space. This roof program,

with its pool and terrace, inverts logic, turning the house upside down! But this inversion takes us to a norm associated with a distinct, permanent, and spartan residential use, where this convention conditions our reading because, in this particular circumstance, the order in which we can engage with the outside prevails and is hierarchically dominant. This apparent inversion and retreat of the domestic program beneath the ground is as peaceful as it is original. However, despite this break with the norm, it becomes discreetly local, identified and affectionate, although it bears a temporary purpose. This predisposition to a discontinuous use is obvious, and it is perhaps this tendency which makes it, in a way, whimsical by respecting the measure, the scale, and the silence of the neighborhood and the place. Must of all because, by giving itself in to time and climate through the program, it exercises no preference between warm and cold weather, behaving in this intimate retreat, so referenced at the organic and biological levels, as a living being which shrinks and hibernates in the intimacy of winter and then exposes, displays, and unfolds itself with the arrival of warm weather. This vocational otherness, from barely anything, makes the house a very strong entity, seemingly disconnected in the farewell, but perennial and solid as stone; firm in that very same place, waiting, caring for the place, the people, and the memory.

This house-refuge maintains the founding role of housing: it is where we sleep, eat, and keep our belongings, so that we can enjoy a place which is more than the landscape surrounding us. There are houses like this, where the greatest wealth, no matter how good the object is, comes from the outside and from its consumption and fruition, even if we have to hide or confine ourselves. It is largely in this revelation balance or tension that the character of this work is defined.

In a previous visit to LP house2 by architect Carvalho Araújo, I discovered how, by accessing the house through an indoor patio excavated in the ground, the comfort and intimacy of the fantasy of living below the ground became evident, and yet, how this formally discreet house could be multiplied at the formal richness level from that very same patio. In Montaria, we find a patio, smaller and only accessible from the inside, whose functional relevance, besides providing light and ventilation, is to organize around it a limited program. Therefore, when we are inside the house, it functions as a disciplining and polarizing use element, 95

offering intimacy to the inhabitant. If the outside has this magnetic charge which

best place to admire the best scenery: the pool-lookout and the vertical protection plane which is comprised of the chimney.

Despite the topography of the plot and the dazzle which the outside offers us, the recollection and intimacy of the cave is achieved in this certainty, in this invitation to ascend to the top, a seduction which we naturally succumb to.

In this eminently private house, the public and social place remains and is enhanced outside. The terrace, the pool, and the small, covered corners, in their relationship with the garden, remain as the drawing room of the house, transitory and non-permanent, deliberately excluded from the inhabitants' relationship with the place and the landscape.

And where does this healthy contradiction occur? In this morphological and programmatic inversion, in a house which is fulfilled in the intimacy and correctness of its interior space, but which has in the roof this extraordinary object that defines it so much. I think that the partial exercise of comparing the inside and the outside, the high and low levels, does not help in understanding this work, although there is a clear tendency to read them individually, perhaps due to the richness which surprises us in such a small space, where we find tranquility and mystery in that inner secret; where this higher level gives us height and field of vision but, above all, freedom and horizon. These are some of the small luxuries offered by architecture.

o pátio reforça a noção de intimidade, permitindo que a iluminação natural e ventilação das áreas interiores da habitação não dependam da exposição e abertura frontal, oferecendo um grau de privacidade que contrasta com o exterior e uma continuidade entre o conjunto dos espaços. À superfície, o desenho do pátio eleva os muros de suporte que remetem para os tradicionais tanques da aldeia, uma das referências conceptuais do projecto.

The patio reinforces the notion of intimacy, allowing natural lighting and the indoor areas of the house not to depend on the frontal opening and exposition, offering an amount of privacy which contrasts with the outside and a continuity between the spaces as a whole. On the surface, the patio drawing raises the support walls which take us back to the traditional tanks of the village, one of the conceptual references of the project.

Quando visito as obras do Carvalho Araújo, fico com a sensação de regressar sempre a uma mesma obra, híbrida, porventura apenas existente na minha imaginação, mas carregada de uma identidade que resguarda o parentesco entre elas. Poder-se-á discutir se essa identidade deve mais ao desenho na sua vertente aparente e formal ou se deve mais ao modo de se instalar nos lugares e nas pessoas. Necessariamente, defenderei que ambas não se separam, como a arquitectura requer e demonstra. Este arquitecto nunca as separou; diria até que se torna difícil discutir uma linguagem ou atitude formal em sentido estrito quando o modo como se dá a génese do projecto é uma consequência tão natural das condicionantes do mesmo, que produz a aparente ideia de que o projecto nasce sozinho, como uma transpiração desse debate crítico que o projecto reserva em todas as suas particularidades.

Curiosamente, há uma explicação do autor para este projecto que partilha parcialmente esta noção, o facto de o cliente resumir a concepção do projecto às imagens e elementos gráficos que nunca foram consumados fielmente (tal qual essas suas memórias), resultantes de um conjunto de conversas tidas entre ambos numas viagens de avião, criando uma espécie de nostalgia imaginária, como se essa fidelidade original fosse mais rica que uma ideia entretanto construída.

Este exercício de especulação, imaginação e memória faz parte do enredo que compreende o processo de gestação da obra e presta-se a apropriações mais ou menos apaixonadas – neste caso, do cliente – que, face à magia de ver nascer o projecto em directo, julgou possivelmente ter aí o desenho a sua faceta mais original e, portanto, memorável. Mas era apenas mais uma reflexão do arquitecto no hipnótico percurso da arquitectura.

Conheci esta casa num primeiro momento através de imagens, entre vídeos e fotografias, e, naturalmente, elaborei um juízo de valor e criei expectativas recorrendo a esses testemunhos e ao acervo da memória de outros trabalhos do autor. Mas a experiência de conhecer a obra no lugar é, obviamente, irreprodutível!

A obra carrega um novo desafio, o de se emancipar desse significado intermediado que de si é gerado. Obviamente que nós, a partir do local e da experiência do real,

produzimos imagens que não são simples relatos visuais, mas somatórios sensíveis de tudo quanto apreendemos in situ. E essa é uma riqueza incomparável.

Ao pensarmos naquele território e naquela paisagem, esperamos desde logo um espaço silenciado pela vegetação e pela tranquilidade que aquela natureza particular faz questão de dominar. O sítio é um feliz e belo enclave verde que desce em direcção à água da barragem. A casa situa-se na cota alta do terreno, bem no cimo e centrada nesse vale, usufruindo do melhor enfiamento visual possível.

A sua face mais mediática não é a que oferece à chegada e não é traduzível num único ponto de vista. Contudo, a escolha da leitura a partir da cota baixa do terreno permite entender um alçado que se estende horizontalmente, imponente, onde se percebe a sucessão de materiais por camadas, desde uma plataforma em betão, onde assenta a construção propriamente dita, a transparência do vidro e um maciço em madeira. Mas esta leitura é corrigida pela nossa chegada à propriedade que, ao ser efectuada pela cota alta, nos deixa perante a cobertura da casa ao nível da nossa cintura, numa discrição até intrigante, sem obstáculo visual, refugiandose nesse aproveitamento do declive do terreno para resolver um programa simples, mas espacialmente ousado. A implantação da construção afasta-se do limite da propriedade e da localização da casa preexistente, entretanto demolida, evitando os problemas de estabilidade que existiam em face do deslocamento de terras e do curso de água. Assim, ao salvaguardar essas prioridades, aproveita o declive e a sua diferença de cotas para dissimular a construção. Essa “ocultação” acontece por via da presença de um muro de contenção em betão, onde se faz a ancoragem da casa, ao mesmo tempo que uma plataforma de betão que constitui o pavimento do piso térreo funciona em harmonia com esse muro e oferece a sustentação horizontal da construção.

O momento paradigmático deste “arranjo técnico-formal” evidencia-se no momento da chegada, após termos deitado o olhar sobre o horizonte por cima da cobertura e onde o acesso principal ao interior está adossado ao muro de suporte e ao terreno. Esse movimento de chegada é relativamente reservado, vai mergulhando no solo e isso cria uma sensação de recolhimento que se relaciona na perfeição com o enquadramento natural da propriedade. Este percurso, 113

piso inferior, que surge numa fase tardia da obra, resgatando o lugar da plataforma elevatória no exterior, posicionando-se fora do circuito interno da casa, como se pudéssemos isolar e subdividir a unidade maior, e que, não só pela localização como pelas proporções, assume um tom cerimonial – uma espécie de capela, pelo modo como se abre, pela cortina e pela proporção do espaço.

Sensatamente, esta arquitectura mais complexa é respeitadora do que a natureza sugere. Veja-se o ritual da água, que nos remete para um certo desenho oriental, pausado, desenhando o seu caminho, construindo tanques e atravessamentos, conferindo tempo ao espaço, ao uso do espaço. Esse é um préstimo subliminar desta obra, que é o de fazer a apologia de um tempo pausado, lento, capaz de nos deixar absorver os detalhes daquele lugar. Esse caminho peculiar da água desenha um lago-piscina natural que predomina visualmente no centro do terreno. Há algo fundamental ali, não pela presença dominante da água, mas no diálogo que estabelece com a construção, uma espécie de prolongamento funcional e visual, amplo e central na percepção do conjunto. Sucede que esse caminho, que se tornou mais lento e interessante através do desenho, reproduz a intenção do referido percurso exterior e de acesso à habitação. Tudo muda de ritmo naquele lugar e esse cerimonial não é indissociável de uma predisposição iconográfica da obra, ora nessa modulação e atravessamento, ora nesses momentos de pausa fundamentais que constituem os terraços, como extensão do interior e fusão com o espaço natural exterior. A casa tem essa vocação cinematográfica, sem anular a sua genética tranquila, ao adoptar um desenho que convida a uma fruição colectiva, de convívio, numa obra que garante sempre ter espaço para cada individualidade. A riqueza do seu desenho vive da adopção de uma linguagem prática, compreensível e flexível. É nesta equação complexa que encontramos a tradição e o respeito pela natureza, o sentido prático que resiste ao uso mais radical e a garantia da intimidade e recolhimento, que a tornam algo distinta e simultaneamente fácil de apropriar. Recupero, no entanto, aquela estranha ansiedade que me acompanhou na obra, estranha no sentido de admiração e desejo, e simultaneamente na incapacidade de dominar esse espaço sem tal corresponder a qualquer desconforto; esse lado peculiar de estarmos na presença de algo quase delirante e estranhamente pequeno. Esta redução é imposta pela natureza, que domina e

repõe a hierarquia das coisas. A casa agradece, libertando-se desse ónus de predominância visual, e aproveita-se dessa distração para ocupar um lugar forte e ser um vínculo àquele lugar, o motivo maior do regresso e da permanência, em que o “à vontade” da vegetação demonstra como a natureza fica melhor acompanhada com a arquitectura.

A casa pousa numa bandeja de betão que cria um atravessamento responsável por repor a liberdade espacial, definindo uma das características fundamentais desta obra. Esta opção é assimilada pela arquitectura a partir das condições exteriores, encostando-se ao terreno, sustentando-o e aliviando a aparência da sua volumetria. A escala percebida da obra vai diminuindo face à experiência do estar e apropriar, através desses recursos projectuais que não se conseguem isolar como parcelas do desenho, senão vistos como elementos de um raciocínio maior que é o projecto, onde estas opções radicam em problemas que estimulam soluções. A volumetria, que assume um impacto significativo no interior, é uma armadilha visual, pois torna-se absolutamente necessária para sentirmos a liberdade de quem está no exterior a partir do interior. A criação de um tecto alto na zona social presta essa informação ao utilizador, essa vocação natural, através da liberdade visual e atmosférica. A própria circulação ao nível do piso superior recorre a uma espécie de galeria suspensa, um passadiço transparente que liga os quartos, contíguo às aberturas exteriores e que nos deixa sentir que caminhamos por entre a vegetação, sempre com uma enorme cumplicidade com o que acontece na cota baixa.

A materialidade que compõe estruturalmente esta casa reforça esse desejo de perenidade, o betão enquanto rocha, não apenas na plataforma que serve de estabilidade e estatuto da construção, mas assumidamente de forma visível nas paredes, escadas e pavimentos, onde o desempenho técnico é visível e exibido como parte desse desafio e simplificação. A ideia de beleza está latente através da transparência e das aberturas criadas nesse invólucro generoso, estabelecendo uma fusão entre o

When I visit Carvalho Araújo's works, I get the feeling of always returning to the same work, a hybrid one, perhaps only existing in my imagination, but loaded with an identity which safeguards the relation between them. One could argue whether this identity is due more to the drawing in its apparent and formal aspect, or whether it is due more to the way it is installed in places and people.

Necessarily, I will defend that both are not separated, as architecture requires and demonstrates. This architect has never separated them; I would even say that it becomes difficult to discuss a formal language or attitude in a strict sense when the way the genesis of the project happens is such a natural consequence of the constraints of the project that it produces the apparent idea that the project is born alone, like a transpiration of this critical debate which the project holds in store in all its particularities.

Curiously, there is an explanation from the author for this project which partially shares this notion, the fact that the client reduces the project conception to images and graphic elements which were never faithfully consummated (just like their memories), resulting from a set of conversations held between them on a few flights, creating a sort of imaginary nostalgia, as if that original faithfulness were richer than an idea which had been built in the meantime.

This speculation, imagination, and memory exercise is part of the plot which comprises the gestation process of the work and lends itself to more or less passionate appropriations – in this case, by the client – which, faced with the magic of seeing the birth of the project live, possibly thought that this was the most original and, therefore, memorable facet of the drawing. But this was just another reflection of the architect in the hypnotic journey of architecture.

I initially discovered this house through images, among videos and photographs, and, naturally, created my value judgment and expectations through these testimonies and the memory collection of other works by the author. But the experience of discovering the work on site is, of course, impossible to reproduce!

The work carries a new challenge, that of emancipating itself from this mediated meaning which is generated by itself. From the place and experience of the real

word, we obviously produce images which are not mere visual reports, but sensitive sums of everything we apprehend in situ. And this is an incomparable richness.

When we think of that territory and landscape, we immediately expect a space silenced by vegetation and the tranquility that particular nature makes a point of dominating. The place is a happy and beautiful green enclave which descends towards the water of the dam. The house is situated at the upper level of the plot, right on top and centered on this valley, enjoying the best possible visual alignment. Its most famous side is not the one it offers upon arrival and is not translatable into a single point of view. However, the choice of reading it from the lower level of the plot allows us to notice a horizontal, imposing elevation, where the succession of layered materials can be perceived, from a concrete platform, where the building itself rests, to the transparency of the glass and a massive wood structure. But this reading is corrected by our arrival at the property.

By arriving from a high level, the roof of the house is brought to our waist level, in an even intriguing discretion, without any visual obstacle, taking refuge in this use of the slope of the plot to solve a simple but spatially daring program. The building implantation moves away from the edge of the property and the location of the pre-existing house, which has since been demolished, avoiding the stability problems which existed due to land and water displacement. Thus, by safeguarding these priorities, it takes advantage of the slope and its level difference to conceal the building. This "concealment" takes place through the presence of a concrete retaining wall, where the house is anchored, while a concrete platform which makes up the ground floor pavement works in harmony with this wall and provides horizontal support for the construction.

The paradigmatic moment of this "technical-formal arrangement" is obvious in the moment of arrival, after we have looked over the horizon above the roof and where the main access to the inside is attached to the supporting wall and the ground.

This arrival movement is relatively discreet; it plunges progressively into the ground and this creates a sense of seclusion which engages perfectly with the natural setting of the property. This path, which chooses to be hidden and deep, creates its own staging and prepares us for a surprise when we find ourselves at the entrance 129

of the work, retrieving the place of the lift platform on the outside, positioning itself outside the internal circuit of the house, as if we could isolate and subdivide the larger unit, which, not only due to its location but also its proportions, takes on a ceremonial tone – a sort of chapel due the way it opens itself up, due to the curtain and the proportion of the space. Sensibly, this more complex architecture is respectful of what nature suggests. Look at the water ritual, which takes us back to a certain oriental design, paused, drawing its way, building tanks and crossings, giving time to space, to the use of space. This is a subliminal benefit of this work, which is to promote a slow, paused time, capable of letting us absorb the details of that place. This peculiar water path draws a natural pool-pond which enjoys visual predominance in the center of the plot. There is something fundamental there, not because of the dominant presence of water, but in the dialogue it establishes with the construction, a sort of functional and visual extension, wide and central when it comes to the perception of the ensemble. It turns out that this path, which has become slower and more interesting through the drawing, reproduces the intention of the previously mentioned outside access path leading to the house.

Everything changes rhythm in that place and this ceremonial is inseparable from an iconographic predisposition of the work, either in this modulation and crossing or in these fundamental moments of pause which make up the terraces, functioning as an extension of the inside and a fusion with the natural outside space. The house gains this cinematographic purpose, without annulling its tranquil genetics, by adopting a drawing which offers collective and convivial fruition, in a work which always guarantees space for each individuality. The richness of its drawing comes from the adoption of a practical, understandable and flexible language.

It is in this complex equation that we find tradition and respect for nature, the practical sense which resists the most radical use, and the guarantee of intimacy and seclusion, which make it somewhat distinctive and simultaneously easy to appropriate. I recollect, however, that strange anxiety which accompanied me in the work, strange in the sense of wonder and desire, and simultaneously in the inability to dominate that space without any discomfort; this peculiar side of being in the presence of something almost delirious and strangely small. This reduction is imposed by nature, which dominates and restores the hierarchy of things. The

house appreciates it, freeing itself from this burden of visual predominance, and takes advantage of this distraction to occupy a strong place and to be a link to that place, the main reason for returning and staying there, where the "at ease" feeling of the vegetation demonstrates how nature is better accompanied by architecture.

The house rests on a concrete tray which creates a crossing responsible for restoring spatial freedom, defining one of the fundamental characteristics of this work. This option is assimilated by architecture through the external conditions, leaning against the plot, supporting it and lightening the appearance of its volumetry. The perceived scale of the work progressively diminishes in the face of the experience of being and appropriating through these project resources which cannot be isolated as parcels of the drawing, but rather seen as elements of a greater reasoning, which is the project, where these options are rooted in problems which stimulate solutions. Volumetry, which takes on a significant impact on the inside, is a visual trap, as it becomes absolutely necessary for us to feel the freedom of who is outside from the inside. The creation of a high ceiling in the social area provides this information to the user, this natural purpose, through visual and atmospheric freedom. The circulation itself at the upper floor level uses a sort of suspended gallery, a transparent walkway which connects the rooms, adjacent to the outside openings, which lets us feel that we are walking through the vegetation, always with an enormous complicity with what happens at the lower level.

The materiality which structurally makes up this house reinforces this desire for continuity, concrete as a rock, not only in the platform which offers stability and status to the building, but assumedly in a visible way in the walls, stairs and floors, where the technical performance is visible and displayed as part of this challenge and simplification. The idea of beauty is latent through the transparency and openings created in this generous enclosure, establishing a fusion between the inside and outside and allowing for maximum enjoyment of nature in a healthy borrowing of light, freedom, and lightness. The proportion of the spaces, perhaps unexpected, is a critical challenge, but not a practical one! This alternation of scales, which oscillates between generous areas that suddenly retreat towards a utilitarian

dimension, discreetly operates a mechanism which adjusts us to the place, through the use and rhythm presented to us, letting architecture reduce the details and whims of drawing to the essential, shifting the real detail to the fine-tuning of space use in its organization, cadence, and the way we build identity and comfort. The notion of comfort, which is permanent, despite the sensitive challenges posed by space, has in wood a primordial link in this desire and relationship of affection between man and matter, establishing an immediate relationship with the natural surrounding area in a sort of temporal solidarity, allowing itself to age in order to reflect this time and space, making it obvious how much the work intends to be seen as a lived, integrated organism which grew there to only belong there; like a tree.

Living the place is now a distinct experience in face of the time of the pre-existing house which gave way to this new building. Architecture is not just about adding a new use and accommodation option to that place. Architecture goes beyond that, operating an enrichment of what is seen and used, the way we feel a greater harmony and comfort with the natural surrounding area, how it repositions our gaze and reading, besides the permanent pedagogy it makes about the way to occupy and engage with nature, making the best of its inherent quality and the obvious comfort those spaces offer to their users. This was the reason for my suggestion in view of the emergence of a positive anxiety from those who are confronted with so many exceptional ways to take advantage of this work.

That nature wich we appreciate becomes special because of the planning the house imposes and draws in the landscape, either honoring and taking advantage of the natural conditions or coexisting with and overcoming the technical constraints the place itself raised, making it necessary to "tame" the place and create that center of interest.

O desenho do exterior, que está mais além do jardim, funde terraços e plataformas com o espaço natural por forma que o limite da habitação se torne desejavelmente fluido e até indefinido. O percurso da água é corrigido e pensado para criar uma cadência ao ritmo da arquitectura, alternando nesse trajecto o recurso aos materiais naturais e artificiais sem distinção.

Este é o elemento primeiro do projecto, que recebe particular atenção tal qual a nova construção que o acompanha.

The drawing of the outside space, which is beyond the garden, merges terraces and platforms with the natural space so that the limit of the house becomes desirably fluid and even undefined. The water course is fixed and conceived to create a cadence to the rhythm of architecture, alternating the use of natural and artificial materials without distinction in this pathway. This is the first element of the project, which receives particular attention just like the new construction accompanying it.

A lagoa, que assume o papel de piscina natural, tem uma intenção de contenção de água no seu percurso natural, criando um polo de interesse no centro do terreno que compensa a importância da habitação.

The pond, which takes on the role of a natural pool, is intended to contain water in its natural course, creating a source of interest in the center of the plot which offsets the importance of the house..

A questão cromática é alvo de particular atenção na forma como envelhece a construção, como se consegue prever esse “acompanhamento do tempo” e como se pretende tirar partido dele para reforçar a integração da obra naquele lugar. A madeira e a sua reacção ao tempo mostram como a obra não está terminada.

The chromatic issue receives particular attention in the way the building ages, how this act of "keeping up with time" can be foreseen and how one intends to take advantage of it to reinforce the integration of the work in that place. The wood and its reaction to time show how the work is not finished.

Do Brasil From Brazil

O Brasil surge na história do atelier como um contexto propício à rentabilização do modo particular de pensar e projectar do Carvalho Araújo.

Apercebemo-nos de como o seu modo mais abrangente de pensar o projecto, não limitado às afinidades imediatas da arquitectura e suas correlações, se ajusta na perfeição ao modo de estar tão natural daquele país onde a predisposição para a informalidade, a espontaneidade e uma identidade próxima de um certo improviso na resposta se sintonizam bem com a identidade flexível do autor. Esse contágio é envolvente, inclusivo, agregador e pedagógico, deixando espaço para o imprevisto e para a permanente necessidade de ponderar a surpresa. Resumidamente, há um optimismo implícito nesta forma de estar e abordar os problemas e, como referi anteriormente, percebe-se o quanto este modo disponível e flexível é importante nesse contexto de permanente imprevisibilidade.

Os anos recentes, nomeadamente em termos económicos, levaram muitas empresas portuguesas a olhar o exterior e, em particular, o Brasil como um 153

território e um mercado com um enorme potencial de expansão. A língua convida

In harmony, of course!

I would venture a curious relationship of conceptual proximity between this large scale – the urban planning, the process of making cities and the design which is conceived and projected for a collective and undetermined user. Perhaps Carvalho Araújo's project genesis, through product design, finds in Brazil this methodological revisiting which the industrial product naturally assumes. This time of industry perhaps contributed to a way of conceiving the project which finds in these collective architecture programs, without a pre-established, anonymous and eventually standardized user, a more elastic idea for architecture, how to manage the expectations of those who do not commission or participate in the project, but who will be responsible for validating and exponentiating the quality which the drawing should offer to the space.

Another important fact which shows how reversible this question of scale is, is the importance the project of these buildings devotes to the unit, to the drawing of the house beyond the valorization which is requested and given to the objectbuilding in its urban relationship. The housing units bring the project closer to the previously mentioned human scale, to detail, and reveal a way of inhabiting and using space which translates the richness of the drawing, and the way architecture is so valued as a distinctive factor, both in practice and symbolically. If we look at the work portfolio of real estate developer Idea!Zarvos, we notice how the choice of architects and the level of demand for architecture is judicious and valued, functioning as a promotional mechanism for each work, as well as a way of building a certain drawing identity which it defends and defines for its own benefit.

This simplified portrait hides a broader timeframe with other latitudes. It is important to mention that, during this time period, a real takeover of the Brazilian headquarters of the office takes place, where the recognition of the work done in São Paulo, together with an endeavor of diplomacy and prospecting, opens up another work panorama in the city of Fortaleza, but more broadly and pertinently in the state of Ceará. Curiously, while in São Paul projects are of a private nature, in Ceará they are mostly public. And it is not only a distinction in the relationship with the property and the market, but in the predisposition for less formatted experiences and proposals which allow this less business-like aspect to offer another time, flexibility and recognition in view of a project attitude which redefines the program in its own course. In Ceará, particularly the Government

O edifício Árbol está localizado na Vila Ipojuca, muito próximo de Vila Madalena, o bairro onde a incorporadora Idea!Zarvos, promotora deste projecto, mais tem desenvolvido a sua actividade. A Vila Ipojuca é, à imagem de outros bairros vizinhos, um bairro muito característico onde, não obstante o facto de se encontrar em transformação, predomina de forma evidente a tipologia da vivenda e, por consequência, uma cércea relativamente baixa. Este perfil baixo e a referida tipologia dominante conferem uma identidade própria que interessou respeitar, independentemente do facto de o programa estabelecido para o projecto e a escala proposta para o novo edifício traduzirem essa transformação em curso. Outra preocupação evidente no projecto prendeu-se com o espaço público, com o seu cuidado e tratamento, por via de um contágio pedagógico e qualificador operado pelo projecto, estendendo o seu arranjo exterior nas imediações do edifício.

A implantação do edifício, na forma de um “L”, acompanha a dimensão dos edifícios mais altos mas, simultaneamente, recupera a escala da vivenda, tão presente na envolvente, através do corpo horizontal do edifício e da permeabilidade visual do seu piso térreo para estabelecer essa dupla relação entre necessidade e identidade. A intenção do projecto foi um certo “voltar as costas” aos edifícios altos, abrindo o ângulo interior do edifício para uma área visualmente mais desafogada, qualificando a vivência das unidades habitacionais que o compõem. Este exercício de projecto, embora possa parecer evidente após a construção, nasce de um programa que pressupunha o aproveitamento até ao limite da cintura legal aplicável e desse escrupuloso cumprimento de regras, índices e limitações que configuram um desenho que, embora aparente uma assinalável descontração, é, no fundo, o resultado do equilíbrio que deixa para a arquitectura o desafio maior de encontrar vínculos ao contexto e à cultura local enquanto se enriquece o uso e o discurso do objecto perante os seus habitantes.

Isso verifica-se na intenção de constituir um pátio interior ajardinado, oferecendo uma riqueza adicional ao edifício, dotando-o de um certo charme que, por vezes, escasseia nesta escala urbana. No entanto, é a utilização da vegetação, tão exuberante no Brasil e indissociável da construção, que confere a plenitude arquitectónica à obra, reforçada pela permeabilidade visual à cota do piso térreo, estabelecendo o diálogo entre a rua e este jardim interior, como se lhe fosse, de certo modo, oferecido.

The Árbol building is located in Vila Ipojuca, in close proximity to Vila Madalena, the neighborhood where developer Idea!Zarvos, this project’s promotor, has been undertaking the majority of its activity. Similarly to other nearby neighborhoods, Vila Ipojuca is a highly traditional district which, despite the transformation surrounding it, is patently dominated by the villa typology and, as a result, by a fairly low gauge. This low profile and the predominant typology previously mentioned offers an identity of its own which was willfully respected, even though the program established for the project and the proposed scale for the new building translate this ongoing transformation. Another patent concern surrounding the project was the public space, its maintenance and handling, through a qualifying and pedagogical contagion operated by the project, expanding its outdoor arrangement in the surrounding area of the building.

The implantation of the building, in the shape of an "L", follows the size of the tallest buildings but, at the same time, restores the villa scale, which has such a strong presence in the surrounding area, through the horizontal body of the building and the visual permeability of its ground floor to establish a double relation between necessity and identity. The intention of the project was to somewhat "turn its back" on high-rise buildings, opening the inner angle of the building towards an area which is visually more ample, dignifying the existence of the residential units which comprise the building. Although it might seem obvious after the construction, this project exercise stems from a program which entailed the utilization of space up to the limit of the applicable legal belt and from the observance of rules, indicators and limitations that shape a drawing which, although it seemingly bears a certain amount of relaxation, is, deep down, the result of the balance that presents architecture the major challenge of finding links to the context and local culture, while enriching the use and statement of the object before its residents. This can be seen in the intention to construct an indoor garden patio, adding extra value to the building and giving it a certain amount of charm, which is sometimes lacking at this urban scale. However, it is the use of greenery, which is so lush in Brazil and inseparable from the construction, that gives the work its architectural completeness, reinforced by the visual permeability at the ground floor level, establishing a dialogue between the street and this indoor garden as if it were, in a way, offered to it.

In its vertical body, the building is arranged by two sets of vertical accesses and four apartments in each floor, making a total of eight residential floors and an additional one on the roof with two apartments. This body follows a modular composition logic and its intention stems from the desire to customize and differentiate, which can be seen in the surrounding villas, where the balconies allow for an adjustment to individual tastes and needs, together with a strong material dynamic, color, volumes and established pace among such material options. This option would be even more obvious in a preliminary phase of the project where the glass facades would take up more surface and which, due to budget constraints, would see a substantial part of themselves make way for stonework as a response and feasible solution for the work. However, the drawing of the facades devotes special attention to detail in order to house the air conditioning equipment, shutters, flower boxes, and framework in order to integrate these variables in the drawing of the ensemble.

Even though it might not be visible separately, it is the horizontal body of the building which carries the link to the street, the public space and the nearby singlefamily detached houses. It offers a visual continuity, the enrichment of the public space and, particularly, the enhancement of the common areas of the building.

Therefore, this body, where the elevated garages over the street are located, has a path above such gallery which divides the public and private spheres and establishes the union and distribution between the two apartment blocks.

If the interpretative and constructive logic of these unis is the vertical answer to the multiple need of house supply, this project takes on a bigger distinction in the way it solves the common areas and how, through a smaller enclosure, it seeks to start a dialogue and offer continuity to the surrounding area.

O edifício marca o regresso e continuidade da parceria do Carvalho Araújo com a incorporadora Idea!Zarvos e deve o nome ao facto de se situar na Rua Harmonia, numa cota alta da Vila Madalena, um bairro predominantemente constituído por habitações de escala pequena, embora veja cada vez mais o seu perfil ser alterado, fruto das várias intervenções existentes que lhe vão acrescentando edifícios de estatura elevada.

O facto de este edifício se situar numa cota alta do bairro, no cimo e numa suave curva da rua, permite que este se implante de forma a abrir-se e orientar-se para um grande vale, com maior liberdade visual, e que, simultaneamente, se assuma como um elemento marcante na paisagem, destacado nesses enfiamentos visuais de quem percorre a Rua Harmonia e percebe como o edifício obedece a esse desenho viário e desenha uma torção que acompanha a curva da via.

O edifício não tem vedação para o exterior, o que, não sendo um exclusivo, constitui uma raridade face à cada vez maior preocupação em garantir a segurança da propriedade. Esta característica de não encerramento deriva do facto de o edifício mais baixo que compõe o projecto ter uma dupla função e um forte carácter público, onde se destacam os serviços, sendo, no entanto, desenvolvida por forma que essa opção não comprometa a privacidade e encerramento da área habitacional privativa que ocupa a torre e confere o protagonismo funcional do conjunto.

O edifício assume uma certa ousadia programática e formal ao constituir-se por dois corpos que, por vezes, aparentam ser dois edifícios autónomos. O desenho resolve essa necessidade funcional mista, mas oferece a resposta à mesma através da criação de uma falsa, mas evidente, fractura na volumetria do edifício, aproveitando a curva da rua para se justificar e organizar. Sendo um edifício misto, compõe-se por um corpo de cota mais baixa, com seis pisos, destinado a serviços e onde alberga uma oferta habitacional de tipologia distinta: um conjunto de lofts e estúdios com uma lógica comercial distinta da do corpo vertical, dedicado exclusivamente a habitação, com a particularidade de possuir apenas um generoso apartamento por piso. Esta particularidade configura um edifício com uma vocação para a classe alta, oferecendo um conjunto de privilégios que são raros à maior parte dos edifícios habitacionais, nomeadamente o facto de

to develop and explore an extremely manicured indoor arrangement with the freedom that the available area and the full interpretation of the outside space have to offer.

Its astonishing verticality rivals the other large-sized buildings in the surrounding area, not once forgetting the profile and character of the neighborhood which it is part of. The presence and statement of the building are reinforced by two access lobbies, with one of them taking center stage, cutting out the entrance, which pierces the building vertically through several elevated floors, from the mass of the building. The drawing of the lobby demonstrates the direction of the building and its concern to provide the building with expressiveness and comfort through a vast, manicured vegetable presence and the use of ceramics, a traditional Portuguese material, compensating the visible mass of concrete which embodies the building through the outside with the smoothness and brightness of ceramics. This material offers the visitor a certain ceremonial and is, at the same time, an expressive, sophisticated and vernacular material in its respectful proximity to the scale of the surrounding villas. While the lobbies aim to give continuity to the street and the way the building interacts with the public space, the torsion established by the two bodies, softened by the Harmonia Street bend, creates a subtle divide and separates the building into two bodies, taking apart the impact of the mass built at the lower levels. This noticeable separation of the building means that the roof of the lower body penetrates the larger one, separating the private area of the latter at the higher levels and offering an exceptional programmatic response on that roof.

Pools, a gym, a half basketball court; common areas mixed with garden areas which filter and guarantee the desired privacy, while simultaneously offering the most enjoyable natural setting given the urban context which they are part of. Similarly to the Árbol building design, the drawing of the common areas in an ingenious horizontality ensures the richness and distinctiveness of this building, regardless of the fact that the tower, due to the strong impact created by its height, has that material elegance and discretion, as well as the capacity to preserve an important harmonic dialogue in the ensemble.

O Museu da Imagem e do Som em Fortaleza, embora não sendo o primeiro projecto, é a primeira obra do atelier no Estado do Ceará. Após tomar conhecimento do MIS de São Paulo, o Carvalho Araújo incorporou algumas referências para este projecto, não tanto na vertente arquitectónica, mas ao nível dos conteúdos e na vocação cívica e inclusiva do espaço.

O Museu situa-se numa zona importante da cidade, próximo do Palácio da Abolição – o Palácio do Governo –, num local onde existia um armazém desqualificado, entretanto demolido para dar lugar ao novo equipamento, e na proximidade do edifício onde então funcionava o MIS, preservado e que reserva agora as funções administrativas do Museu. O “novo” Museu é então um complemento ao edifício existente e alberga as funções expositivas e formativas do equipamento. O seu desenho pressupõe uma atitude de projecto que se estende além do desenho do edifício, partindo do desenho de uma praça frontal ao novo edifício e recuando a nova construção por forma a libertar esse espaço para o domínio público sem comprometer a presença e simbolismo do edifício existente do Museu e a não menos importante vizinhança do Palácio da Abolição, que confronta a praça desde o outro lado da rua.

A ideia de desenhar uma praça em conjunto com o novo edifício define o projecto como um grande elemento de mobiliário urbano, dedicado e ajustado ao uso colectivo, convidando o público ao uso e à apropriação com as evidentes vantagens de ser inclusivo e participante na segurança e equilíbrio social ao invés de fomentar segregação e limitação espacial. A intenção será então a de procurar resolver a tensão social e a violência através da participação da arquitectura como elemento plural e construtor de equilíbrio.

O desenho da praça proporciona um considerável incremento de conforto exterior, de sombra, desenhando bancadas que denotam o convite à assistência ou ao repouso, mas que surgem também para ocultar iluminação natural para o piso inferior, rematar a praça no contacto com os limites da área de intervenção e proteger dois conjuntos de árvores classificadas que aí existiam e se pretendiam salvaguardar.

O edifício assume então uma fachada para a praça que se assemelha a uma grande tela, um plano contínuo e fechado que se dobra e oculta o programa do Museu nas suas costas e sob a praça. Uma tela de projecção que permite transportar o

programa do Museu para o exterior, não apenas para um público de permanência, na praça, mas também para um público transitório que circula entre a avenida e o passeio. A forma do Museu fica então intimamente ligada a essa metáfora do uso.

Contudo, esse plano também surge para diminuir o impacto de uma grande torre situada por trás do edifício e, embora consciente da impossibilidade de o fazer completamente, permite garantir a tranquilidade pretendida para a nova praça e convocar a atenção apenas para esse novo uso e para o quanto o novo edifício ajuda a resolver e equilibrar todo aquele quarteirão.

O acesso ao Museu é feito a partir do piso térreo, protegido pela pala – o plano dobrado –, e contempla na cota superior uma biblioteca e uma sala de exposição.

No piso inferior, sob a praça, o projecto estrutura-se em torno de uma grande sala de exposição com pé-direito duplo escavada sob o solo, albergando ainda no seu perímetro um programa complementar a esse uso principal. As dobragens e torções do plano que constituem o pavimento da praça oferecem iluminação natural e fuga visual para esses espaços escondidos, sendo constante no edifício a presença de detalhes qualificadores do seu uso, não obstante a enorme simplicidade formal e material do conjunto, como uma “árvore metálica” que ocupa o lugar de uma árvore preexistente e que funciona como elemento de iluminação artificial.

Percebe-se assim uma particular atenção prestada ao equilíbrio e coerência urbana que o edifício deveria proporcionar e o custo desse equilíbrio para o projecto na cedência, porventura, de uma maior exuberância que a própria função do Museu poderia legitimar, mas que, em respeito a uma vizinhança simbolicamente forte e uma necessidade de dar prioridade ao equilíbrio social, conduziram o desenho para uma solução-obra que verá o tempo validar com naturalidade nesse realismo e parcimónia.

The building is thus characterized by a façade towards the square which resembles a big screen, a continuous and closed plane which folds itself and hides the program of the Museum behind its back and below the square. A projection screen which allows to move the program of the Museum to the outside, not just for a permanent audience, on the square, but also for a passing audience which flows freely between the avenue and the sidewalk. The shape of the Museum becomes closely connected with this use metaphor. However, the presence of this plane also allows to reduce the impact of a big tower standing behind the building and, while being aware of the inability of doing it through and through, it helps guarantee the desired tranquility for the new square and focus the attention solely on this new use and on how much the new building helps balance the entire block.

The Museum is accessed via the ground floor, which is protected by the gusset – the folded plane –, and features a library and an exhibition hall at the top level. On the ground floor, below the square, the project is structured around a big double-height exhibition hall excavated below the ground, while also housing in its perimeter a program complementary to this main use. The folds and twists of the plane which comprise the pavement of the square offer natural lighting and a visual escape towards such hidden spaces. In the building, there is a constant presence of details which qualify its use despite the tremendous formal and material simplicity of the ensemble, like a “metallic tree” which stands in the place of a pre-exiting tree and functions as an artificial lighting element.

A particular attention to the balance and urban coherence which should be offered by the building can thus be perceived, as well as the cost of that balance for the project when it comes to perhaps compromising a greater exuberance that the function of the Museum itself could legitimize but which, as a show of respect for a symbolically strong neighborhood and a need to prioritize social balance, led the drawing towards a solution-work which time will validate with naturalness among this realism and frugality.

Posfácio

Brasil, o Gigante dos Trópicos Ângela Ferreira

Olhar a obra de Carvalho Araújo a partir de dois pontos geográficos é um convite a um movimento de rotação que requer fôlego, em especial quando estes dois elementos são atravessados por um mundo ao avesso. E olhar a obra ao revés implica um movimento mais livre, mais ousado, mais embaralhado e delirante.

No gigante dos trópicos, o arquiteto lança-se à construção de uma nova cartografia pessoal, fitando as vibrações da travessia com coragem e transgressão. A sua poética desconcertante está em conduzir o dentro e o fora da sua obra ao testar limites e transgredir fronteiras. Nela entram em cena disciplinas como a antropologia, filosofia, política, história, música, literatura, além de todo um conjunto de questões da história da arte. Há neste processo não só um intenso movimento mas, acima de tudo, uma aspiração a uma estética transformadora que o torna imediatamente aberto e, paradoxalmente, muito vincado e pessoal.

Acredito que terá sido esta inquietação e compulsão artística que gerou o seu encontro com o Brasil, ou seja, a atitude provocadora na sua terra de origem do hemisfério Norte é a mesma a causar tremores abaixo da linha do Equador. Há apenas uma diferença: “não existe pecado ao sul do Equador”1 e é no Brasil que o arquiteto procura o fogo, sem perder a forma.

Sabemos que faz parte do jeito brasileiro a alegria de viver, a afirmação das afinidades emotivas nas relações pessoais, o doce e inconsequente desarranjo dos sentidos na

(e que ganhou vida própria na voz insinuante e melindrosa de Ney Matogrosso).

When looking at Carvalho Araújo’s work from two geographical points, one is engaged in a rotation movement which requires stamina, particularly when these two elements are crossed by a world which has been turned upside down. Looking at his work from the inside out involves a freer and bolder movement, which is also more frantic and scrambled.

In the giant of the tropics, the architect sets out to build a new personal cartography, gazing at the vibrations from the crossing with courage and transgression. His disconcerting poetics comes down to leading the inside and outside of his work by testing limits and transgressing boundaries. Through it, subjects such as anthropology, philosophy, politics, history, music and literature come into play, as well as a whole set of art history questions. This process shows not only an intense movement, but above all an aspiration to a transforming aesthetic, making it immediately open and, paradoxically, very sharp and personal.

I believe this artistic compulsion and restlessness may have been at the origin of his encounter with Brazil, i.e. the provocative attitude from his homeland in the Northern Hemisphere is also the one shaking things below the equatorial line. There is only one difference: “there is no sin to the south of equator”1 and it is in Brazil where the architect looks for fire, without losing shape.

We know that the joy of living, the assertion of emotional affinities in personal relationships, the sweet and inconsequential derangement of the senses in the spontaneity of affections, such as in the “torn sin” from Chico Buarque’s song – African vitality filtered by Portuguese tenderness. This is where the dilemma lies: how can we reach the comforts and powers of reason without relinquishing the pleasures and delights of impulses? I dare to believe that it is precisely in the intersection of these two provisions where the heart of the secret Brazilian utopia of greatness and realization lies: to refine the shape without losing the fire. It remains to be seen how we can find the balance in this variable and magical equation which marks the architect’s travels between the two hemispheres. But let’s dig into the story. Still on this side and in the dawn of the millennium, I actively monitored the radical cut of the nuclear façade of the former barracks of Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) in Braga. The act was symbolic, and the power of the abrupt cut was directly linked with the generational transformation of a former military building into a creative powerhouse. The city watched the dawn of a new era, with the birth of gnration, a cultural space-symbol which housed the fever of creative industries. Since the first sketch, Carvalho Araújo’s work was celebrated as some sort of show where the desires of creation took shape. The power of the narrative seemed to expand the political potential of the work and the architect’s rebelliousness by strengthening the freedom of creation. This was the strength that moved the social, political and cultural tissue in the city, and, at the beginning, everything was already there: the architect’s risk to transcend architecture.

It’s in the risk threshold that lies the quintessential place of Carvalho Araújo’s work. It’s risk that signals disharmony, danger, the gap which marks its transforming strength, nowadays “expanded”2 to the other side of the Atlantic, with all its desires, dramas and contradictions. It’s in “Entranced Earth”3 that Carvalho Araújo’s work intertwines itself all the way from São Paulo, the vertigo city of the Southeast, to the land inflamed with 341

Nuno Filipe Vieira Guimarães, 1975 Arquitecto, Escola Superior Artística do Porto, 2006 Designer de Produto, Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, 1999 Assistente no Curso de Design de Produto, ESTG - Instituto Politécnico Viana do Castelo, entre 2000 e 2006 Colabora com o Arquitecto Carvalho Araújo, por vezes em tempo integral, outras parcial, mas sempre de forma especial, desde Setembro de 1995 José Manuel Castro Carvalho Araújo Nasceu em Braga, em 1961, cidade onde vive e trabalha.

Desde 1986, ano em que assume a direcção do Centro de Estudos Carvalho Araújo, que procura, através do desenho industrial, uma abordagem ao projecto fortemente experimental e inovadora.

Em 1990, conclui a Licenciatura em Arquitectura, pela Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.

Em 1996, cria a empresa J. M. Carvalho Araújo, Arquitectura e Design, S.A., onde desenvolve projectos de arquitectura e de design industrial, para o mercado nacional e internacional.

Entre 2005 e 2013 conciliou a actividade docente com a prática, leccionando a cadeira de Projecto na Licenciatura em Arquitectura da Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Católica de Viseu.

Em 2013 funda o atelier em São Paulo, em resultado da crescente actividade projectual no Brasil.

Actualmente, alia ao projecto o trabalho de consultor e director criativo em diversas empresas e participa assiduamente em exposições, conferências e congressos, vendo a sua actividade distinguida nacional e internacionalmente com os mais relevantes prémios na área do projecto.

José Manuel Castro Carvalho Araújo Born in Braga, in 1961, city where he lives and works.

Since 1986, year in which he takes over the direction of the Carvalho Araújo Study Center, he seeks, through the industrial drawing, a strongly experimental and innovative project approach.

In 1990, he completes the Bachelor in Architecture of the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon.

In 1996, he creates the J. M. Carvalho Araújo, Arquitectura e Design, S.A. company, where he develops architecture and industrial design projects for the national and international market.

Between 2005 and 2013, he combines teaching with practice, lecturing the Project course unit of the Bachelor in Architecture of the School of Architecture of the Catholic University of Viseu.

In 2013, he founds the São Paulo studio as a result of the growing project activity in Brazil.

Nowadays, he combines the project with the role of creative director and advisor in various companies, and regularly attends exhibitions, conferences, and congresses, seeing his activity awarded with the most relevant prizes in the project field, both nationally and internationally.
