To think of Swiss architecture is, inevitably, (as have) the simultaneous synonym of accuracy, quality, functional clarity and a strong formal identity.

An die Schweizer Architektur zu denken ist, zwangsläufig, gleichzeitig Synonym für Präzision, Qualität, funktionale Klarheit und eine starke formale Identität.

Pensar em arquitectura suíça é, inevitavelmente, o sinónimo simultâneo de rigor, qualidade, clareza funcional e uma forte identidade formal.

Characteristics which reflect themselves on the way of living and identify the country's identity and its culture beyond borders, often seen as austere, cold and of an almost impersonal rationality.

Diese Eigenschaften, spiegeln sich in der Lebensart und identifizieren die Identität des Landes und seiner Kultur über seine Grenzen, die oft als streng, kalt und einer fast unpersönlichen Rationalität gesehen wird.

In turn, the balance between the exceptional quality of the craft manufacturing techniques and the use of the latest technology result in an architecture endowed with a huge technical rigor and a pure formal and sensory awareness which, through an approach that is not confined to the image or the form, establishes a deep and conscious relationship with the living spaces, as well as the simultaneous and so common usage of such distinct materials such as concrete, wood and glass.

THE CENTRAL PERIPHERY OR THE HAUGHTY SWISS MARGINALITY

It is not the first time that we, in A.mag, highlight the analysis of Swiss architect's projects, but the truth is that, despite the country's small scale, there is a significant number of offices whose production has consistently proven itself of great quality.

A few years ago, Fernandez Galiano talked about Swiss architecture by stressing its "splendid isolation" but also the haptic matter of many of its oeuvres.

In fact, when the first projects by Jacques Herzog and by Pierre de Meuron came out, this was an architecture that astonished by the way how it expressed itself and how it was seen through the multisensory experience, which combined itself with a techniques and materials' experimentation that was truly fascinating. However, it is something that has been changing with the programs and constructions' dimension, that has lost in sensuousness what it has gained in spectacularity. ...................

What we designate here as Swiss architecture, without any scowling intentions or any defining claims, is, naturally, the one which is made in Switzerland, reflex of a society full of contradictions, profoundly cosmopolitan, but also deeply rooted in the most ancient traditions. A society whose social, political and even cultural structures keep on surprising each and every one who observes it.

A society that keeps itself on its "splendid isolation", a central periphery, sometimes autistic, of such a haughty marginality that not only builds itself against nobody, but rather on the statement of an identity which is meant to be kept and from which results the aforementioned peripheral character. ..........

As a matter of fact, when we refer to a periphery, we are almost always referring to places located on the edges, physically isolated, but all of us have coexisted with peripheries which are so, even though they are located in the center of our cities (haven't the historic centers been that way for a long time?); or gaps which are not a consequence of physical distance, but rather caused by constraints of complex topographies. As herein.

Topographies that have been, themselves, defining areas of cultural influence which reflect, for example, on the territory's linguistic complexity, but simultaneously extend them to the neighboring territories. The way in which I here refer, for the sake of these architectures' analysis, to the center and periphery concepts has nothing to do with its geographic location, but rather with the manner these concepts are used in the creation of an identity. An identity that, it seems to me, clearly exists in its multiple contradictions between pragmatism's tradition and disinterest in utopia. An identity quite strongly defined by a long and tenacious tradition of craftwork, but which holds hands with the constant use of the most advanced technologies, made possible by a quite open industrial structure.

An identity also created by the need to respect every rhythm of an omnipresent nature which constrains the organization of every multiple aspect of the everyday life rhythms. A nature

whose presence manifests itself through the most diverse manners by a fondness for the picturesque that lingers until the present day through, sometimes, surprising breakthroughs.

Any analysis of the twentieth century architecture made in Switzerland invariably highlights the same facts, with a first period of great cultural activity defined by the emergence of the first modern works from 1924 - 27.

An example of that phase is the small and discreet 54 m2 house designed by Corbusier for his parents by the Lake Geneva (lac Léman). Subject of great controversy and discussion with the authorities - who have considered it undesirable to be repeated - it is now considered a national monument. After the war, during the 50s, a great building activity returned. Several works

by Atelier 5, based in Berne, stood out with their low-height and high-density residential complexes and an extraordinary relationship with the landscape.

Sometimes reference is also made to the importance exerted

by Aldo Rossi's pedagogy, who here taught during the 70s, and the emphasis that he gave to the understanding of architecture as a cultural phenomena.

In this cultural landscape some colleges, such as ETH in the German-speaking area and the Academy of Mendrisio in the Italian-influenced area, have had, for some years, the deserved attention and several Swiss architecture offices have stood out through continuous proposals of great quality and coherence.

Reflect of such work, and while we still live in an age of trivialization of awards for all tastes, and although it is impossible to make any generalization of their value, we cannot forget the Pritzker awarded in 2001 to the work of Herzog and Meuron and again in 2006 to the projects of Peter Zunthor...........

Many characteristics of Swiss architecture that we have been making reference to are well presented on the singularity of these approaches, on these expressions of a refined cosmopolitan isolation, on projects where the fondness for what is sensual, reconcile themselves with the most refined technological experimentation. It is in this complex of references that both offices here referred shall be framed.................

The one from Daniel Buchner and Andreas Bründler, established in 1997 and based in Basel, certainly one of the most cosmopolitan cities, and the one from Andreas Fuhriman and Gabrielle Hächler, whose headquarters are in Zurich and is more close to the German tradition. With projects of distinct dimensions, but where those that we may consider of small scale, with a large number of individual dwellings, prevail, what really is enhanced is, above all, the consistency of a continuous research within the project's approaches.

Much more interesting than the analysis of the works produced, and not forgetting the inevitable particularities that result from the entire legal framework, the constructions' industry structure, or the real estate pressure, which so many times undermines priorities and does not allow the time for reflection, is, certainly,

the understanding of its approximation process towards the project. An approximation established on the analysis of multiple complexities of the architecture's approach, without being a priori more or less formal, but rather established on a very careful search for answers for the relationship that is established between humans and spaces.

A transdisciplinary approach whose "centrality" allows for the conciliation with acquirements that combine the contributions from the most diverse areas of knowledge, with the needed time for its maturation and development, while that other peripheral vision reveals itself through the utmost care put into details, and through a cautious economy of means, and which expresses itself through the quality solutions and the materials selection that allow a huge formal clarity and conceptual accuracy.

This is, by these means, an architecture that is understood not only through what is shown on a first reading, but rather through the way it highlights every waypoint, which are many times contradictory in their pathways for new work proposals. In a world of so many globalities, it is always good to note that, well beyond the spectacularity of images that immerse us everyday, there is still room for all of these reflections and proposals.

Projects unapologetically experimental are so, not in a sense of purely formal experimentation, more or less gratuitous, but rather as exercises of a great technical accuracy, functional clarity and formal restraint, of such experimentation, which result from the need for research that comes from understanding the complexity of programs and people, their social and cultural structures, or the refined understanding of the relationship established between public and private spaces, and that will be reflected on the technical solutions to be found for each situation.

Experimentation in the search of new paths capable of answering to the many questions that the complex and continuous mutations of the existing structures pose to us daily, which have a lot to do with the ability to consider the way the buildings can operate as structuring elements of the urban contexts they are part of.

The awareness and attention given to the study of these complex contradictions is certainly one of the best reasons why we should remain attentive to the pragmatism of many of these offices and their ability to surprise us.

Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass wir, bei A.mag, die Projektanalyse von Schweizern Architekten hervorheben, aber die Wahrheit ist, dass, trotz der geringe Größe des Landes, es eine beträchtliche Anzahl von Büros gibt, deren Produktion sich von großer Qualität konsequent entpuppt. Vor ein paar Jahren, sprach Fernandez Galiano über die Schweizer Architektur und betonte ihrer "herrlicher Abgeschiedenheit", sowie die haptische Wahrnehmung von vielen seiner Werke.

Eigentlich, als die ersten Projekte von Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron entstanden, war es eine Architektur, die durch die Art wie sie sich selbst zum Ausdruck brachte, erstaunte und die durch eine multisensorische Erfahrung, die experimentell Techniken und Materialien kombinierte, wirklich faszinierend war. Allerdings hat sich etwas mit den Umfang der Programme und Konstruktionen verändert und, was es heute in Sinnlichkeit verloren hat, hat in Spektakularität gewonnen. ...................

Was wir hier als Schweizer Architektur bezeichnen, ohne finsteren Absichten oder irgendwelche Ansprüche zu definieren, ist natürlich die, die in der Schweiz hergestellt wird, Reflex einer Gesellschaft voller Widersprüche, zutiefst weltoffen, aber auch tief in den ältesten Traditionen verwurzelt. Eine Gesellschaft, deren soziale, politische und sogar kulturelle Strukturen behalten hat, überrascht weiteihin jede und jeder, die sie beobachtet.

Eine Gesellschaft, die sich auf seine "herrlicher Abgeschiedenheit" hält, eine Peripherie des Zentrums, manchmal autistisch, von einer solchen hochmütigen Marginalität, die sich nicht gegen jemand baut, sondern auf die Behauptung einer Identität, die dazu bestimmt ist, gehalten zu bleiben und aus dem der vorgenannten peripheren Charakter resultiert.

In der Tat, wenn wir uns auf einer Peripherie beziehen, nehmen wir fast immer Bezug auf Orte, die an den Rändern liegen, physisch isoliert, aber wir alle haben schon immer mit Peripheren koexistiert selbst wenn sie im Zentrum unserer Städte liegen, (waren die historischen Zentren für eine lange Zeit nicht so gewesen?); oder durch Abstände, die nicht Folge einer physische Entfernung sind, sondern vielmehr durch Zwängen der komplexen Topographien verursacht wird. Wie hier.

Topographien, die die Bereiche des kulturellen Einflusses selbst begrenzen, die, zum Beispiel, die sprachliche Komplexität des Territoriums reflektieren, aber gleichzeitig den benachbarten Gebieten erweitern.

Die Art und Weise, in der ich hier mich an die Begriffe von Zentrum und Peripherie beziehe, für diese Analyse der Architekturen, hat nichts mit der geographischen Lage zu tun, sondern mit der Art und Weise wie diese Konzepte in der Schaffung einer Identität verwendet werden. Eine Identität, die mir eindeutig in seine vielfältigen Widersprüche zwischen pragmatische Tradition und Desinteresse an Utopie zu bestehen scheint. Eine Identität durch eine lange und zähe Tradition des Kunsthandwerks sehr stark definiert ist, aber die auf dem Laufenden mit dem ständigen Einsatz vom fortgeschrittene

Technologien ist, möglich durch eine sehr offene Industriestruktur. Eine Identität hergestellt auch wegen der Notwendigkeit alle Rhythmen einer allgegenwärtigen Natur zu respektieren, und die verschiedene Aspekte vom täglichen Lebensrhythmus einschränkt. . Eine Natur, deren Gegenwart durch die verschiedensten Weisen mit einer Vorliebe für das malerische sich manifestiert, die bis zum heutigen Tag anhält, manchmal durch überraschende Durchbrüche verweilt.

Jede Analyse der Architektur des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, die in der Schweiz hergestellt wurde, unterstreicht unveränderlich die gleichen Fakten, mit einer ersten Phase von großen kulturellen Aktivitäten durch das Aufkommen der ersten modernen Werke aus dem Jahr 1924 - 27 gekennzeichnet ist.

Ein Beispiel für diese Phase ist das kleine und diskrete 54 m2 Haus, dass Corbusier für seine Eltern am Genfersee (Lac Léman) entworfen hat. Thema einer große Kontroverse und Diskussion mit den Behörden -die das Objekt als unerwünscht betrachten um wiederholt zu werden-gilt heute als ein nationales Denkmal.

Nach dem Krieg, in den 50er Jahren, kehrte eine große Bautätigkeit zurück. Mehrere Werke von Atelier 5, mit Sitz in Bern, stechen mit ihrer Wohnanlagen von geringer Höhe und hohe Dichte, und einer außergewöhnlichen Beziehung mit der Landschaft hervor. Manchmal wird auch Bezug auf die Wichtigkeit von Aldo Rossis Pädagogik, der hier in den 70er Jahren unterrichtete, genommen und auf das Verständnis, dass er der Architektur gab als kulturelles Phänomen. In dieser Kulturlandschaft sind einige Hochschulen, wie der ETH im deutschsprachigen Gebiet und die Akademie Mendrisio in der italienischen geprägten Gebiet, erwähnenswert , und auch mehrere Schweizer Architekturbüros erregen kontinuierliche Aufmerksamkeit durch Angebote von große Qualität und Kohärenz. Reflex dieser Arbeit sind mit Pritzker gekrönte Werke von Herzog und Meuron in 2001, und erneut in 2006 die Projekte von Peter Zunthor, auch wenn wir in einem Zeitalter der Verharmlosung der Auszeichnungen für jedermann leben und die Verallgemeinerung seines Wertes unmöglich ist. Viele Merkmale der Schweizer Architektur auf dir wir hingewiesen haben, sind in der Singularität dieser Ansätze, in den Ausdrücken einer raffinierten kosmopolitischen Isolation, und in Projekten, die die Vorliebe für das sinnliche mit der Genauigkeit technologischen Erprobungen vereinheitlicht, vorhanden.

Es ist in dieser Anlage von Referenzen, wo die beide hier genannten Büros im Rahmen fallen. Der eine von Daniel Buchner und Andreas Bründler, in 1997 gegründet und mit Sitz in Basel, sicherlich eine der kosmopolitischsten Städte, und der von Andreas Fuhriman und Gabrielle Hächler, mit Sitz in Zürich und am nahesten der deutschen Tradition. Mit Projekten von verschiedenen Dimensionen, aber in denen, die wir als Kleinmittelgroß mit einer großen Anzahl von Einzelhäusern betrachten, was in denen hervorhebt ist vor allem die Konsistenz

einer kontinuierlichen Forschung innerhalb der Ansätze des Projekts.

Noch interessanter als die Analyse der produzierten Werke, und nicht zu vergessen die unvermeidlichen Besonderheiten, die aus dem gesamten rechtlichen Rahmen fallen, die Struktur in der Bauindustrie oder der Immobilien-Druck, der so oft Prioritäten untergräbt und nicht Zeit zum überlegen erlaubt, ist sicherlich , das Verständnis seiner Annäherungsprozess gegenüber dem Projekt. Eine Annäherung auf der Analyse von mehreren komplexen Architekturansätze abgesetzt, ohne von vornherein mehr oder weniger formalen, sondern auf einer sehr sorgfältigen Suche nach der Antwort für die Beziehung, die zwischen den Menschen und Räume entsteht. ...................

Ein transdisziplinäre Ansatz, dessen "Zentralität" mit Wissen, wo die Interessen der verschiedensten Wissensgebieten kombiniert werden, in Einklag bringt, mit der benötigten Zeit für seine Reifung und Entwicklung, während diese andere periphere Sicht sorgfältig in den Details befinden, und durch eine vorsichtige Ökonomie der Mittel, und in der Qualität der Lösungen und die Wahl der Materialien sich äußert, erlauben eine große formale Klarheit und konzeptuelle Präzision.

Das ist, mit diesen Mitteln, eine Architektur, die verstanden wird, nicht nur durch was auf den ersten Blick scheint, sondern eher durch die Art und Weise wie es alle Zwischenpunkten hervorhebt , die oft widersprüchlich in der Suche nach neue Arbeitsvorschläge sind. In einer Welt voller Globalisierungen, ist es immer gut festzustellen, dass weit über die spektakulären Bilder, die uns jeden Tag erscheinen, , es noch Raum gibt für alle diese Reflexionen und Vorschläge.

Experimentelle Projekte sind, nicht im Sinne eine rein formales Experiment, mehr oder weniger kostenlos, sondern als Übung einer großen technischen Genauigkeit, funktionale Klarheit und formale Zurückhaltung, ein Versuch Sondern als Übung einer technischen Genauigkeit, ein Versuch der aus die Notwendigkeit der Suche vom Verständnis der Komplexität der Programme und Menschen entstand , der sozialen und kulturellen Strukturen, oder vom tiefen Verständnis der Beziehung zwischen öffentlichen und private Bereiche, dies wird in den technischen Lösungen reflektiert. Experimente auf der Suche nach neuen Wegen, die in der Lage sind, die vielen Fragen dass die komplexen und konstanten Veränderung der aktuellen Strukturen, zu beantworten, und haben viel mit der Reflexionsfähigkeit zu tun, wie die Gebäude als strukturierende Elemente des städtischen Umfeld in dem sie sich befinden. Das Bewusstsein und die Aufmerksamkeit die auf die Forschung dieser komplexen Widersprüche gegeben wird ist sicherlich einer der besten Grunde um weiterhin auf das Pragmatismus vieler dieser Büros zu achten, und deren Fähigkeit uns zu erstaunen. ...................

Não é a primeira vez que na A.mag destacamos a análise de projectos de arquitectos suiços, mas a verdade é que apesar da pequena dimensão do país há aqui um significativo número de gabinetes com uma produção que se tem revelado, consistentemente de grande qualidade. Há alguns anos Fernandez Galiano falava da arquitectura Suiça destacando o seu ´esplendido isolamento´ mas também a matéria táctil de muitas das suas obras.

De facto, quando surgiram as primeiras obras de Jacques Herzog e de Pierre de Meuron esta era uma arquitectura que surpreendia pelo modo como se exprimia e se 'via' através dessa experiência plurisensorial que se aliava a uma experimentação de técnicas e materiais verdadeiramente fascinante. Algo que se foi alterando com a dimensão de programas e das obras que hoje perderam em sensorialidade aquilo que ganharam em espectacularidade. Aquilo que aqui designamos de arquitectura Suiça, sem quaisquer intenções redutoras nem pretensões definidoras, é naturalmente, aquela que é feita na Suiça, reflexo de uma sociedade cheia de contradições, profundamente cosmopolita, mas também arreigada às tradições mais arcaicas. Uma sociedade cujas estruturas sociais, políticas e até culturais continuam a surpreender todos quantos a observam.

Uma sociedade que se mantem no seu ´esplendido isolamento´, uma periferia do centro, por vezes autista, de uma soberba marginalidade que não se constroi contra ninguém mas antes na afirmação de uma identidade que se pretende manter, e de onde justamente resulta essa característica de periférica.

De facto, quando nos referimos a uma periferia estamos quase sempre a referir-nos a locais à margem, fisicamente isolados, mas todos nós sempre convivemos com periferias que o são mesmo estando no centro das nossas cidades (não foram assim vividos durante muito tempo os centros históricos?); ou em afastamentos que não são consequência da distância mas sim causados pelos impedimentos de topografias complexas.

Como aqui.

Topografias que foram elas próprias delimitando áreas de influência cultural que se reflectem por exemplo na complexidade lingúistica do território, mas que ao mesmo tempo o prolongam em ligações que o estendem aos territórios vizinhos. O modo como aqui me refiro aos conceitos de centro e de periferia para a análise destas arquitecturas nada tem pois a ver com a sua localização geográfica mas simplesmente com o modo como estes conceitos são usados na construção de uma identidade. Uma identidade que me parece claramente existir nas multiplas e complexas contradições entre a tradição do pragmatismo e o desinteresse pela utopia. Uma identidade muito fortemente marcada por uma longa e fortíssima tradição do trabalho artesanal mas que anda a par com o constante recurso às tecnologias mais avançadas, possibilitadas por uma estrutura industrial muito aberta.

Uma identidade construida também pela necessidade de respeitar todos os ritmos de uma natureza, omnipresente e condicionadora da organização de todos os multiplos aspectos dos ritmos da vida do dia a dia. Uma natureza cuja presença se manifesta nas mais diversas formas de um gosto pelo pitoresco, que perdura até aos nossos dias em afloramentos por vezes surpreendentes. Qualquer análise da arquitectura feita na Suiça no século XX, destaca invariavelmente os mesmos factos, com um primeiro período de grande actividade cultural marcado pelo surgimento das primeiras obras modernas a partir de 1924 - 27.

Exemplo dessa fase é a pequena e discreta casa de 54 m2 desenhada por Corbusier para os seus pais junto ao lago de Genebra (lac Léman). Objecto de grande controvérsia e debate com as autoridades, (que a consideraram indesejável para ser repetida), está hoje classificada como monumento nacional.

Depois da guerra, na década de 50 voltou a haver bastante actividade construtiva. Destacaram-se então várias obras do Atelier 5, sediado em Berna, com os seus complexos residenciais de baixa altura e alta densidade e uma extraordinária relação com a paisagem. É também por vezes referida a importância exercida pela pedagogia de Aldo Rossi que por aqui leccionou nos anos 70, e pelo enfase que ele dava ao entendimento da arquitectura como fenómeno cultural.

Neste panorama cultural têm também desde há alguns anos merecido destaque algumas faculdades como a ETH na região de língua alemã de Zurich, ou a Academia de Mendrisio, na zona de cultura italiana, e diversos gabinetes de arquitectura suiços têm-se destacado numa continuidade de propostas de grande qualidade e coerencia. Reflexo desse trabalho, e ainda que vivamos numa época de banalização de prémios para todos os gostos, e que seja impossível qualquer generalização do seu valor, não podemos esquecer os Pritzker atribuidos em 2001 aos trabalhos de Herzog e de Meuron, e de novo em 2006 aos projectos de Peter Zunthor.

Muitas das características da arquitectura Suiça que temos vindo a referenciar estão bem presentes na singularidade destas abordagens, nestas manifestações de um apurado isolamento cosmopolita, em trabalhos onde o gosto pelo sensorial, se concilia com a mais apurada experimentação tecnológica. É neste complexo de referências que há enquadrar os dois gabinetes aqui referidos.

O de Daniel Buchner e Andreas Brundler, formado em 1997 e sediado em Basel, seguramente uma das cidades mais cosmopolitas, e o de Andreas Fuhriman e Gabrielle Hacher com sede em Zurich, e mais próximo da tradição alemã. Com trabalhos de diversas dimensões, mas onde predominam os que podemos considerar de pequena-média dimensão com grande número de habitações individuais, o que neles se realça é sobretudo a consistência de uma continua pesquisa nas

abordagens ao projecto. Muito mais interessante do que a análise das obras produzidas e sem esquecermos as inevitáveis especificidades que resultam de todo um enquadramento legislativo, da estrutura da indústria da construção civil, ou na pressão imobiliária que tantas vezes subverte prioridades e não permite o tempo de reflexão, é, seguramente, o entendimento do seu processo de aproximação ao projecto.

Uma aproximação sedimentada na análise das multiplas complexidades da abordagem da arquitectura, sem a priori mais ou menos formais mas antes fundamentado na procura de respostas muito cuidada das relações que se estabelecem entre os seres humanos e os espaços.

Abordagem transdisciplinar que a sua 'centralidade' lhes permite conciliar com conhecimentos onde se conjugam as participações das mais diversas áreas de conhecimento, com o tempo necessário à sua maturação e desenvolvimento, enquanto essa outra visão periférica se revela no extremo cuidado posto nos detalhes, e numa cuidadosa economia de meios e se manifesta na qualidade de soluções e na escolha de materiais que permitem uma grande clareza formal e precisão conceptual. Esta é assim uma arquitectura que se entende não só naquilo que nos mostra numa primeira leitura, mas no modo como destaca todos os pontos intermédios, e muitas vezes contraditórios nos caminhos para as novas propostas de trabalho. Num mundo de tantas globalidades, é sempre bom constatarmos que muito para além da espectacularidade das imagens com que todos os dias nos submergem, continua ainda a haver espaço para todas estas reflexões e propostas outras. Projectos assumidamente experimentais são-no não no sentindo de uma experimentação puramente formal, mais ou menos gratuita, mas antes enquanto exercícios de um grande rigor técnico, clareza funcional e contenção formal, de uma experimentação que é consequência da necessidade da procura que resulta do entendimento da complexidade de programas e pessoas, das suas estruturas sociais e culturais, ou do apurado entendimento da relação que se estabelece entre espaços públicos e privados, e que se virá a reflectir nas soluções técnicas a encontrar para cada caso..................

Experimentação na procura de novos caminhos capazes de responder às muitas questões que as complexas e em constante mutação estruturas actuais nos colocam diáriamente, e têm muito a ver com a capacidade de reflectir sobre o modo como os edifícios podem funcionar como elementos estruturadores dos contextos urbanos onde se inserem. A consciência e a atenção dada ao estudo destas complexas contradições é seguramente uma das melhores razões para continuarmos atentos ao pragmatismo de muitos destes gabinetes e da sua manifesta capacidade de nos espantarem.

Buchner Bründler Architekten wurde 1997 von Daniel Buchner und Andreas Bründler in Basel gegründet und besteht aus einem Team mit fünf Associates und rund dreissig Mitarbeitenden aus den Bereichen Architektur und Innenarchitektur. Das Betätigungsfeld umfasst sowohl städtebauliche Planung und Entwicklung, Realisierung von öffentlichen Gebäuden, Wohnund Dienstleistungsbauten sowie innenräumliche Arbeiten.

Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Stadt im grösseren Kontext spielt eine zentrale Rolle in der Arbeitsweise von Buchner Bründler. Die architektonischen Konzepte werden durch eine fortlaufende Recherche und ein Experimentieren mit Form und Material weiterentwickelt. Sämtliche Projekte wenden sich eingehend den programmatischen Inhalten zu, die individuell ausformuliert und in einem intensiven Diskurs mit den Auftraggebern und zukünftigen Nutzern umgesetzt werden.

Contexto e espaço desempenham um papel central no trabalho da Buchner Bründler, que é caracterizado pela experimentação e estudo contínuos da forma, luz, materialidade e cor. The firm is also renowned in a larger urban development context.

In 2006 for example, Buchner Bründler Architekten won a design competition for the "Volta Zentrum" in Basel.

The building presented in 2010 illustrates that buildings are able to give a district a new structure and identity.

Projects outside Switzerland are an increasing source of work for the firm. The renovation of the GA-200 rooms in the UN headquarters in New York was completed in 2003, and then presented to the UN as a gift from Switzerland. After successful completion of a pavilion in the Jinhua Architecture Park in China, the Swiss pavilion at the World Exhibition 2010 in Shanghai was completed by 2010 and the construction of a villa in Ordos in Mongolia was planned.

Projects designed and executed by Buchner Bründler have been awarded numerous prizes and published in national and international architecture journals. The architects joined the BSA (Bund Schweizer Architekten - Federation of Swiss Architects) in 2003. The firm received one of the most important Swiss cultural awards, the Swiss Art Award in Architecture in the same year and the well-respected prize "Beton 13" for the "Casa d´Estate Linescio and the "Bläsiring House" in 2013.........

The architects have devoted themselves to teaching and research for several years now and give lectures in Switzerland and abroad on a regular basis. They taught at the EPF Lausanne from 2007 to 2009 and are active as design lecturers at the ETH Zurich since summer 2010.

Als Beispiel sei der Umbau an der Sevogelstrasse in Basel erwähnt. Bei dem mit dem Basler Heimatschutzpreis 2007 ausgezeichneten Projekt werden aus der historischen Bausubstanz zeitgemässe Raumkonzepte entwickelt, die auf Dialog und Authentizität basieren. Im grösseren städtebaulichen Kontext zeigen Buchner Bründler Architekten mit der Realisierung des Volta Zentrumsbaus, wie einzelne Gebäude einen Stadtteil formulieren und neu prägen können. Arbeiten ausserhalb der Schweiz sind ein wachsendes Arbeitsgebiet für das Büro. 2003 wurde der Umbau des GA-200 im Hauptsitz der UNO in New York fertiggestellt und konnte als Geschenk der Schweiz an die UNO überreicht werden. Nach erfolgreicher Ausführung eines Pavillons im Architekturpark Jinhua in China, wurde 2010 der Schweizer Pavillon für die Weltausstellung 2010 in Shanghai realisiert und einer breiten Öffentlichkeit bekannt gemacht.

Die konzipierten wie auch ausgeführten Projekte von Buchner Bründler wurden mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet und in nationalen und internationalen Architekturfachzeitschriften publiziert. Seit 2003 sind die Architekten Mitglieder des Bundes Schweizer Architekten (BSA). Im selben Jahr erhielten sie eine der wichtigen schweizerischen kulturellen Auszeichnungen, den Swiss Art Award im Bereich Architektur. Seit 2013 sind sie Mitglieder im Schweizerischen Ingenieur- und Architektenverein (SIA). 2012 erschien im gta-Verlag Zürich die Monographie "Buchner Bründler Bauten", die im Wettbewerb "Die schönsten Bücher aus aller Welt" der Stiftung Buchkunst 2014 die Goldmedaille gewann. 2013 erhielten sie den Architekturpreis Beton für das Wohnhaus Bläsiring in Basel und Casa d´Estate in Linescio. Die Architekten halten regelmässig Vorträge in der Schweiz und im Ausland. Buchner Bründler Architekten haben sich auch mehrere Jahre der Lehre und Forschung verschrieben.

Sie unterrichteten zwischen 2007 und 2009 an der EPF Lausanne und waren zwischen 2010 und 2012 als Entwurfsdozenten an der ETH Zürich tätig.

O edifício, apresentado em 2010, demonstra que os edifícios são capazes de dar a uma zona uma nova estrutura e identidade. Projectos além Suíça são uma crescente fonte de trabalhos para a empresa. A renovação das salas GA-200 na sede da ONU em Nova Iorque foi terminada em 2010 e posteriormente entregues à ONU como uma oferta por parte da Suíça. Background The building lot in a quiet neighborhood of single-family homes on a privileged slope location is surrounded by developed adjacent properties. Excavation by the previous owner has led to a recessed topographic situation with regard to the immediate surroundings; the granting authorities consider it newly grown terrain. A private cul-de-sac must be built for development of the lot.

Ausgangslage Die Bauparzelle im ruhigen Einfamilienhausquartier an privilegierter Hanglage ist umschlossen von bebauten Nachbargrundstücken. Durch Aushubarbeiten des Vorbesitzers besteht eine zur nachbarschaftlichen Umgebung abgesenkte topografische Lage, die von den Bewilligungsbehörden als neu gewachsenes Terrain beurteilt wird. Zur Erschliessung der Parzelle muss eine private Stichstrasse gebaut werden.

Contexto O lote de construção numa zona de casas unifamiliares sossegada, situada numa encosta privilegiada, encontra-se rodeado por propriedades adjacentes já desenvolvidas.

Escavações por parte do proprietário anterior levaram a um abaixamento topográfico com consequências relativas ao meio envolvente; as autoridades de licenciamento consideram o terreno recentemente maturado. Um cul-de-sac privado tem de ser construído para a exploração do lote.

Konzept Der herabgesetzte, introvertierte Standort führt zur Entwicklung einer spezifischen Wohnanlage. Die Stichstrasse führt auf eine hofartige Eingangsebene, um die sich flexibel nutzbare Räume gruppieren. Der Innenhof nimmt in seiner Grösse Platzcharakter an. Die Hauptwohnebene überlagert den Platz und zeichnet sich durch die Integration des Gartens aus. Die umgebende, in der Höhe variierende Einfassung gibt nur gezielte Blicke auf die Umgebung frei. Im Innern bildet das Hofraum und Gartenebene verbindende Atrium das offene Zentrum des Hauses. Die zirkuläre Raumerschliessung lässt verschiedenste Blickbeziehungen entstehen. In der differenzierten Ausformung sucht die offene Raumskulptur ikonografische Qualität............

Conceito A localização reduzida e introvertida conduz ao desenvolvimento de uma habitação específica. O cul-de-sac conduz a um nível de entrada à semelhança de um pátio com espaços de uso flexível agrupados em volta. Devido à sua dimensão, o pátio interior assume o caráter de uma praça. O principal nível de habitação sobrepõe-se à praça e caracteriza-se pela integração com o jardim. A fronteira envolvente, com alturas variáveis, permite apenas vistas orientadas da envolvente. No interior, o vestíbulo que une o pátio ao nível do jardim forma o centro aberto da habitação. O desenvolvimento do espaço circular permite diversas relações visuais. Na sua forma subtilmente diferenciada, a escultura espacial aberta visa uma qualidade iconográfica.

Concept The lowered, introverted location necessitates the development of a specific housing complex.The culde-sac leads to a courtyard-like entrance level with spaces for flexible use grouped around it. Due to its size, the inner courtyard takes on the character of a square. The main living level overlies the square and is characterized by integration of the garden. The encircling border, with varying heights, enables merely targeted views of the surroundings. Inside, the atrium connecting courtyard space and garden level forms the open center of the house. The circular space development allows for diverse view relations.

In its subtly differentiated form, the open spatial sculpture seeks iconographic quality.

Implementation Architecturally defining is the theme of carrying and spanning.

A rich layering of areas and structural elements shapes the atmosphere. The structurally effective supporting body is cast in concrete. In the interior space, the formal themes are refined and continued. Built-in furniture connects with the wooden wall surfaces and glazed window frames to independent, spaceencompassing figures. The courtyard is plastered with dark bricks. Planted in the atrium are tall, young trees, while at garden level, only bushes flourish. The vertical green thus generates a superimposition of the spatial layers...................

Umsetzung Architektonisch bestimmend ist das Thema des Tragens und Überspannens. Die reichhaltige Schichtung von Raumzonen und konstruktiven Elementen prägt die Atmosphäre. Der strukturell wirksame Tragkörper wird in Beton gegossen. Im Innenraum werden die Formthemen verfeinert weitergeführt.

Möbeleinbauten verbinden sich mit den hölzernen Wandflächen und den lasierten Fensterrahmen zu raumübergreifenden, eigenständigen Figuren. Der Hofraum wird mit dunklen Klinkersteinen gepflastert. Im Atrium werden hochstämmige Jungbäume gepflanzt, während auf Gartenebene nur stammlose Heisterpflanzungen gedeihen. Das vertikale Grün erzeugt somit eine Überlagerung der räumlichen Schichtung........................

Implementação Arquitetonicamente determinante é a temática do transporte e expansão. A rica estratificação de áreas e elementos estruturais dá forma à atmosfera. O estruturalmente eficiente corpo de suporte é realizado em betão. No espaço interior os temas formais são sucessivamente refinados. O mobiliário embutido une-se às superfícies em madeira das paredes e à caixilharia das janelas criando figuras independentes que alastram a diferentes espaços. O pátio é pavimentado com tijolos escuros. Plantadas no átrio encontram-se árvores altas e jovens, enquanto que ao nível do jardim apenas arbustos florescem. O verde vertical gera, assim, uma sobreposição das camadas espaciais.

Background Foreseen in the context of the Nordtangente project is a replanning of the street development on Volta-strasse. The area development plan regulates the functional significance and volumetric development of the individual construction sites. A center with connected shopping area will be built on the Volta Zentrum construction site.The study commission includes solutions for the design of the immediate vicinity in addition to design of the building.

Ausgangslage Im Rahmen des Nordtangente-Projekts ist für die Voltastrasse die Neuplanung der Strassenbebauung vorgesehen. Der Bebauungsplan des Gebiets regelt funktionale Bedeutung und volumetrische Entwicklung der einzelnen Baufelder. Auf demjenigen des Voltazentrums soll ein Zentrumsgebäude mit zusammenhängenden Verkaufsflächen entstehen. Der Studienauftrag beinhaltet nebst dem Entwurf des Gebäudes Lösungen für die Gestaltung der näheren Umgebung.................

Contexto No contexto do projeto da Nordtangente está prevista a replanificação do desenvolvimento da Voltastrasse. O plano de desenvolvimento da zona regula a significância funcional e o desenvolvimento volumétrico dos lotes de construção individuais. Um centro com área comercial será construído no lote do Volta Zentrum. A comissão de estudo inclui soluções para o desenho da vizinhança imediata, para além do projeto do edifício.

Concept The building is conceived as an iridescent body – solid and concise in essence, yet transformable and adaptable to react to the complex urban-planning concerns.The sculpturallyshaped cube oscillates between hermetic cut and gentle form.One of the two punched-out courtyard areas slices the sheathing and opens to the street area.The conically cut front brings vitality and movement to Vogesenplatz square in front of the St.Johann railway station, which becomes the hub of public life. The dynamic of the cantilever structure overcomes the dividing effect of the Luzernerring Bridge.Coming from the Rhine access road, the volume takes on a tower-like character with curve and camber. It segues to the open square by means of a fan-like, widened sequence.The building, accessible on all sides, is developed in diverse ways as a center. The bent showcase front leads from the quarter directly to the sales world. The laterally arranged apartment entrances activate the access streets with additional shop spaces.The bridge level is conceived as a second square area, connected to Vogesenplatz square by a generously arranged, winding, outside stairway.

Glazed pavilions surround and mask the bridge’s support elements.The floors comprise seventy-three urban apartments oriented on several sides. Large floor-to-ceiling windows thematize the view of the city space and create an urban atmosphere. The two inner courtyards embrace wild, nonaccessible gardens that form the calm reserve of the apartments.

Konzept Der Bau wird als changierender Körper verstanden - solide und prägnant in seinem Wesen und doch verwandlungs- und anpassungsfähig, um auf die vielfältigen stadträumlichen Anliegen einzugehen. Der plastisch geformte Kubus oszilliert zwischen hermetischem Schnitt und sanfter Form. Von den zwei ausgestanzten Hofbereichen schneidet der eine die Ummantelung auf und öffnet sich zum Strassenraum. Die konisch geschnittene Stirn bringt Vitalität und Bewegung auf den Vogesenplatz vor dem Bahnhof St. Johann, der zur Drehscheibe des öffentlichen Lebens wird. In der Dynamik des auskragenden Gebäudes wird die trennende Wirkung der Luzernerringbrücke überwunden. Von der Zufahrtsstrasse vom Rhein zeichnet sich das Volumen durch Rundung und Überhöhung turmartig aus. Über eine fächerartig geweitete Sequenz leitet es in den offenen Platz über. Das allseitig begehbare Gebäude ist in vielfältiger Weise als Zentrumsbau ausgebildet. Die geknickte Schaufensterfront führt vom Quartier direkt in die Verkaufswelt. Die lateral angeordneten Wohnungszugänge aktivieren mit weiteren Ladenräumlichkeiten die Zugangsstrassen. Die Brückenebene wird als zweite Platzfläche verstanden. Eine grosszügig angeordnete, gewundene Aussentreppe verbindet sie mit dem Vogesenplatz.

Verglaste Pavillons umschliessen die Tragstützen der Brücke und blenden diese aus. Die Wohnetagen umfassen 73 mehrseitig orientierte Stadtwohnungen. Mit den grossflächigen, bodenbündig angeordneten Fenstern wird der Blick in den Stadtraum thematisiert. Es entsteht eine urbane Atmosphäre.

Die beiden Innenhöfe umschliessen nicht betretbare, wilde Gärten, die den ruhigen Rückhalt der Wohnungen bilden...........

Conceito O edifício é concebido como um corpo iridescente - sólido e conciso na sua essência, mas ainda assim transformável e flexível para reagir às complexas questões do planeamento urbano. O cubo, esculturalmente moldado, oscila entre o corte hermético e a forma delicada. Um dos dois pátios recortados rasga a envolvente e abre-se para a rua. O corte frontal cónico traz vitalidade e movimento à Vogesenplatz em frente à estação ferroviária St. Johann, que se torna o eixo central da vida pública. A dinâmica da estrutura em consola vence o efeito divisório da Luzernerring Bridge. Proveniente da rua de acesso ao Reno, o volume assume um caráter tipo torre com curvaturas e elevações. Prosseguindo para a praça aberta através de uma ampla sequência semelhante a uma ventoinha. O edifício, acessível por todos os lados, é desenvolvido em variadas formas como um centro. A vitrina dobrada da frente liga o quarteirão diretamente ao mundo do comércio.

As entradas laterais para os apartamentos ativam as ruas de acesso com os adicionais espaços comerciais. O nível da ponte é concebido como uma segunda praça, que se liga à Vogesenplatz através de uma escadaria exterior serpenteante e generosamente organizada.

Pavilhões envidraçados envolvem e mascaram os elementos portantes da ponte. Os pisos residenciais compreendem setenta e três apartamentos urbanos com orientações multilaterais.

Envidraçados de chão a teto tematizam a vista da cidade e criam uma atmosfera urbana. Os dois pátios interiores abrangem jardins selvagens não-acessíveis que formam a reserva tranquilizadora dos apartamentos.

Implementation The single-leaf building shell cast in insulating concrete allows the volume to appear as a monocoque body.Attaching the windows at the inner building line emphasizes the shell’s mass.

On the west side, the depth effect is intensified by the balcony arrangement.The square- and bridge-facing façade required a second layer of glazing for noise control. Arranged flush with the façade, it highlights the primary volume form...................

Umsetzung Die einschalig in Dämmbeton gegossene Gebäudehülle lässt das Volumen als Schalenkörper erscheinen. Durch das Anschlagen der Fenster auf der Innenflucht wird die Masse der Schale betont. Westseitig vergrössert sich die Tiefenwirkung durch die Anordnung der Loggien. Die Fassade zum Platz und zur Brücke benötigt als Schallschutzmassnahme eine zweite Verglasungsschicht. Fassadenbündig angeordnet, unterstreicht sie die primäre Volumenform.

Implementação A casca de uma só folha do edifício em betão isolante permite que o volume surja como um monobloco. A fixação dos envidraçados pela linha interior do edifício enfatiza a massa da casca. No lado oeste, o efeito de profundidade é intensificado pelo arranjo das varandas. A fachada orientada para a praça e para a ponte exigiam uma segunda camada de vidro para controlar o ruído. A disposição concisa da fachada realça a forma primária do volume.

Background With its large, bright work halls, the classicist factory building constructed in 1850/51 was considered a model structure for silk ribbon manufacture at the time. In the building’s conversion to a youth hostel in 1979/80, nearly the entire interior was removed except for the former dye cellar. The outer façade layer remained largely unchanged. The guiding concept of the renewed architectural intervention includes, in addition to the required expansion of the space, a clarification of interior space relations and reinterpretation of the context.

Ausgangslage Mit seinen grossen, hellen Arbeitssälen galt das 1850/51 erbaute, klassizistische Fabrikgebäude als Musterbau der damalige Seidenband-fabrikation. 1979/80 folgte der Umbau in eine Jugendherberge, bei dem bis auf den ehemaligen Färberkeller praktisch das gesamte Innere entfernt wurde. Die äussere Fassadenschicht blieb weitgehend unverändert. Der Leitgedanke der erneuten architektonischen Intervention liegt, ausser in der geforderten räumlichen Erweiterung, in der Klärung der innenräumlichen Bezüge und einer Neuinterpretation des Kontexts.

Contexto Com as suas amplas e luminosas salas de trabalho, a fábrica classicista construída em 1850/51 foi considerada, nessa altura, uma estrutura modelo para a produção de fitas de seda.

Durante a conversão do edifício numa pousada da juventude em 1979/80, praticamente todo o interior foi removido, à exceção da antiga cave. A fachada exterior permaneceu praticamente inalterada. O contexto diretor da renovada intervenção arquitectónica inclui, para além da requerida ampliação do espaço, uma clarificação da relação dos espaços interiores e reinterpretação do contexto.

Konzept Die neue Erschliessung vom Maja-Sacherplatz her verändert den städtebau-lichen Kontext der Jugendherberge. Eine Brücke über den St. Alban-Teich führt zum Haupteingang und geht über in einen Holzsteg, der entlang der Gebäudelängsseite in den neuen halböffentlichen Terrassenraum mündet. Eine offene Struktur aus Eichenlamellen an Brücke, Steg und Erweiterungsbau bildet eine hölzerne Klammer um den steinernen Altbau. Zusätzlich wirkt diese als ephemere Ebene und verwebt den Bau mit dem angrenzenden Wald Durch Umorientierung erhält das Erdgeschoss die ursprüngliche Grosszügigkeit der ehemaligen Seidenbandfabrik zurück und wird zur ausgedehnten Begegnungszone. Die punktuelle Öffnung der beiden Stirnseiten erweitert den Blickbezug zur St. AlbanKirche und zur bewaldeten Böschung hin. Bei allen Eingriffen steht, in Anlehnung an die industrielle Vorgeschichte des Gebäudes, eine direkte, robuste und haptische Materialisierung im Vordergrund.

Conceito O novo desenvolvimento da praça Maja-Sacherplatz altera o contextualização urbana da pousada da juventude. Uma ponte sobre o lago St. Alban conduz à entrada principal e continua através de uma passadiço de madeira, acompanhando longitudinalmente o edifício para acabar no novo pátio semipúblico. Uma estrutura lamelar, em carvalho, aberta sobre a ponte, o passadiço e o edifício de ampliação formam um suporte de madeira em torno da antiga estrutura de pedra.

Além disso, atuam a um nível efémero e entrelaçam o edifício e a floresta adjacente, recuperando ao nível térreo, através da reorientação, a vasta escala original da antiga fábrica e transformam-se numa ampla zona de encontro. As aberturas seletivas nas duas frentes expandem a relação visual com a igreja de St. Alban e encosta arborizada. Em alusão ao passado industrial do edifício uma materialização direta, robusta e texturada encontra-se na vanguarda de todas as intervenções....

Concept The new development from Maja-Sacherplatz square changes the youth hostel’s urban contextualization. A bridge across St. Alban pond leads to the main entrance, and continues as a wooden walkway, following along the longitudinal side of the building to end in the new, semi public terrace area. An open oak lamella structure on the bridge, walkway, and extension building forms a wooden bracket around the old stone structure.

As an ephemeral level, it interwines the building and the adjacent forest. Through re-orientation, the ground level regains the original vastness of the former silk ribbon factory and becomes an ample meeting area. Selective opening of the two front sides expands the view relation to St.Alban’s church and the forested embankment. In allusion to the building’s industrial past; direct, robust, and haptic materialization is at the forefront of all interventions.

Implementation The building’s basic structure, with the vaults of the dye cellar and later-inserted supports, is exposed. A sculpturally formed sales counter embraces the reception, which is oriented toward the slope, with vertical development in the back and secondary spaces. Each room of the older building has a front area for washing and luggage storage. Green glazed viewing slots at the sides of the doors connect the strictly aligned corridor with the room layer. Exposed concrete and oak are dominant materials of the extension, which contains twenty-one rooms with bathrooms. Floor-toceiling windows offer a direct relation to the outside space, which, in turn, influences the interior atmosphere and lighting. Vertical lamellae on the façade provide greater intimacy for the private balconies. A loose spatial level emerges, which lets the addition blend into the dense greenery of the forest.

Umsetzung Die Gebäudegrundstruktur mit den Gewölben des Färberkellers und den später eingefügten Stützen wird freigelegt. Eine skulptural geformte Thekenfront umfasst den hangseitig angeordneten Empfang mit der dahinterliegenden Vertikalerschliessung und den Nebenräumen. In jedem Zimmer des Altbaus bietet eine vorgelagerte Zone Platz für eine Waschgelegenheit und Gepäckfächer. Grün verglaste Sichtschlitze seitlich der Türen verbinden den streng gerichteten Korridor mit der Zimmerschicht. Sichtbeton und Eichenholz sind die dominierenden Materialien des Erweiterungsbaus, der 21 Doppelzimmer mit Bad enthält. Raumhohe Fenster bieten einen unmittelbaren Bezug zum Aussenraum, der seinerseits die Raum- und Lichtstimmung im Innern beeinflusst. Vertikale Lamellen an der Fassade sorgen für erhöhte Intimität auf den privaten Balkonen. Es entsteht eine lose Raumschicht, die den Anbau ins dichte Grün des Waldes übergehen lässt................

Implementação A estrutura base do edifício, com as abóbadas da cave e suportes posteriormente inseridos, é exposta. Um escultural balcão envolve a recepção orientada para o declive, com um desenvolvimento vertical nos espaços traseiros e secundários.

Cada sala do edifício antigo tem uma área frontal para lavar e depositar bagagem. Entalhes em envidraçados verdes junto às portas ligam o corredor rigorosamente alinhado ao estrato dos quartos. Betão à vista e carvalho são os materiais dominantes da extensão que contém vinte e um quartos com casa-de-banho. Envidraçados de chão a teto permitem uma relação direta com o espaço exterior, o qual, por sua vez, influencia o ambiente e iluminação interiores. Na fachada, lamelas verticais proporcionam uma maior intimidade para as varandas privadas. Um nível espacial independente emerge, permitindo que o edifício se mescle com o verde da floresta........

Background Located in Linescio, a small village in the remote Rovana valley, is a 200-year-old stone building that should be rebuilt as a summer house. The building comprises a cellar foundation, which extends deep into the steep slope. On the first floor is a simple, unheated living space without water, above which is a hay loft with a loggialike porch. The wooden structure with stone base, built in log house style, perpendicular to the building, was previously used to dry chestnuts. The building was empty for fifty years.

Ausgangslage In Linescio, einem kleinem Dorf im abgelegenen Rovana-Tal, steht ein 200 Jahre alter Steinbau, der in ein Sommerhaus umgebaut werden soll. Das Gebäude besteht aus einem Kellersockel, der weit in den steilen Hang hineinragt. Darüber befindet sich ein einfacher, unbeheizter Wohnraum ohne Wasseranschluss, zuoberst eine Heubühne mit laubenartigen Vorbauten. Der quer zum Gebäude stehende, in Strickbauweise errichtete Holzbau mit Steinsockel diente früher zum Dörren von Kastanien. Das Gebäude hat 50 Jahre lang brach gelegen.

Contexto Localizado em Linescio, uma pequena aldeia no vale remoto de Rovana, encontra-se um edifício bicentenário em pedra que se pretende reconstruir como casa de verão. O edifício inclui uma fundação em cave que se estende ao fundo da encosta íngreme. No primeiro piso encontra-se uma simples zona de lazer sem aquecimento nem água, sobre a qual existe um celeiro com galeria. A estrutura em madeira com base em pedra, construída à semelhança de uma cabana de madeira, foi anteriormente utilizada para a secagem de castanhas. O edifício esteve vazio durante cinquenta anos.

Konzept Der ursprüngliche, archaische Charakter des Hauses soll bewahrt werden. Der Entscheid für ein Sommerhaus erlaubt es, auf Heizung, Fenster und Isolierung zu verzichten und somit die Fassade in ihrem Zustand zu belassen. Das Innere wird hingegen komplett neu, aber ebenso einfach und roh konzipiert: als autonomer Körper aus Beton. Der Innenraum bietet Platz für die elementarsten Wohnbedürfnisse: Wohnraum, Schlafnische und Feuerstelle. Der Rauchfang, ein von der Rückwand hervorstehender Kubus aus Beton, wird bei brennendem Feuer zum Wärmespeicher für die direkt darüberliegende Schlafbühne.

A decisão de criar uma casa de verão tornou que isso fosse possível sem instalação de aquecimento, isolamento e janelas, conservando a fachada na sua forma original. O interior será totalmente novo, mas concebido também de forma simples e inacabada: como um volume de betão autónomo. O interior proporciona o espaço para as necessidades habitacionais elementares: espaço de lazer, alcovas e lareira. A chaminé, um cubo de betão que se projeta desde a parede de tardoz, torna-se um reservatório de calor para a zona de dormitório imediatamente acima.

Concept The original, archaic building structure should be preserved.

The decision to create a summer house made it possible to do without heating, window, and isolation and thereby leave the façade in its original state. The interior will be completely new, but conceived as equally simple and unfinished: as an autonomous concrete volume. The interior offers space for the most elementary residential needs: living space, sleeping niches, and fireplace. The chimney, a cube of concrete projecting from the back wall, becomes a heat reservoir for the sleeping area lying directly above it.

Implementation The concrete for the interior construction was cast layer by layer from the uncovered roof. From the exterior, the new structure is visible only in two places: at the steel-framed glass garden doors, and the concrete chimney, which penetrates the old shell. The adjacent building is reinforced with steel supports.

Within are a kitchen and bathroom whose sparseness corresponds with the overall concept. A new passageway connects the two buildings. Behind the existing doors and windows of the older building, small slots in the concrete volume open over the entire length of the former two stories. The windows can be closed by oak shutters on the inside. In an open state, the view glides out to the open space, past the original interior façade, and through the old window openings.

An interaction between old and new arises from the presence of the old natural stone wall in the modern interior. Chestnuts once dried over an open fire in the current bathroom – as evident by the soot-covered roof timbering. The bath is a tub worked into the floor, into which water flows from above out of a long steel pipe.

Umsetzung Der Beton für den Innenbau wird vom abgedeckten Dach her Schicht für Schicht eingegossen. Von aussen ist der neue Bau lediglich an zwei Stellen sichtbar: bei der Gartentüre aus stahlgefasstem Glas sowie beim Betonkamin, der die alte Hülle durchstösst. Der Nebenbau wird mit Stahlträgern verstärkt.

Darin befinden sich Küche und Bad, die in ihrer Kargheit dem Gesamtkonzept entsprechen. Ein neuer Durchgang verbindet die beiden Gebäude. Hinter den bestehenden Türen und Fenstern des Altbaus öffnen sich im Betonbau schmale Schlitze über die gesamte Höhe der ehemaligen zwei Geschosse. Die Fenster lassen sich durch innen liegende Eichenläden verschliessen. In geöffnetem Zustand gleitet der Blick ins Freie an der ursprünglichen Innenfassade und durch die alten Fensteröffnungen vorbei. Aus der Anwesenheit der originalen Natursteinmauern im modernen Inneren entsteht eine Wechselwirkung zwischen Alt und Neu. Im heutigen Baderaum wurden früher Kastanien über offenem Feuer getrocknet – davon zeugt der vom Russ geschwärzte Dachstuhl.

Gebadet wird in einer in den Boden eingearbeiteten Senke, in die das Wasser aus der Höhe eines langen Stahlrohrs fällt.

Implementação O betão para a construção interior foi projetado camada a camada desde o teto descoberto. A partir do exterior, a nova estrutura é visível apenas em dois locais: nas portas envidraçadas, de caixilharia metálica, para o jardim e na chaminé de betão que rasga a velha casca. O edifício adjacente é reforçado através de suportes metálicos. No seu interior encontram-se uma cozinha e uma casa-de-banho, cuja dispersão corresponde ao conceito global. Uma nova passagem liga os dois edifícios. Por detrás das portas e janelas do antigo edifício, estreitas aberturas no volume de betão alastram-se a toda a altura dos dois antigos pisos. As janelas podem ser fechadas, pelo interior, através das portadas em carvalho.

Quando abertas, a vista desliza para o espaço exterior aberto, para além da fachada interior, e através das janelas antigas.

Uma interação entre o velho e o novo surge da presença da antiga parede em pedra natural num interior moderno. Em tempos, as castanhas secavam sobre uma fogueira na atual casa-de-banho - como evidenciado pela presença de fuligem no teto de madeira. A casa-de-banho é escavada no chão, para onde a água escorre a partir de cima através de um longo tubo de aço.

Background The property is a middle lot of three containing townhouses from the 1870s. The three buildings form the lower conclusion to an open block row. The adjacent buildings are furnished with five full floors and an attic level, exhausting the maximum number of stories allowed by the zoning regulations. The residential block borders public grounds with a school and a church, Matthäuskirche, which lends the quarter its name. The property owner grew up in the house, and would like to realize a new building together with her family.......................

Ausgangslage Beim Grundstück handelt es sich um die mittlere von drei Parzellen, auf denen Reihenhäuser aus dem Jahr 1870 stehen.

Die drei Häuser bilden den niederen Abschluss einer offenen Blockzeile. Die angrenzenden Häuser sind, die maximal von den Zonenbestimmungen erlaubte Geschosshöhe ausschöpfend, mit fünf Vollgeschossen und einem Attikageschoss ausgebildet.

Contexto A propriedade é o lote central de três moradias geminadas de 1870. Os três edifícios estabelecem o limite inferior de uma linha aberta de blocos. Os edifícios adjacentes, com cinco pisos completos e águas-furtadas, atingem o limite máximo de pisos imposto pelo regulamento local. O bloco residencial é limitado por espaços públicos com uma escola e uma igreja, Matthäuskirche, que dá nome ao quarteirão. O proprietário cresceu na habitação e pretendia conceber um novo edifício em conjunto com a sua família.

Concept Due to the minimal width of the lot, and the limited building depth, vertical development is necessary. This leads to the stacking of two triplex buildings. Between the two adjacent structures, the house, in its proportions, looks like a residential tower. One house is assigned the garden, the other a rooftop terrace. The lower apartment comprises the ground level, which connects with the enclosed back courtyard, and the first and second floor . The top apartment comprises the third floor through to loft level, and thus has outside areas available at loft level and on the accessible roof top. Every floor is organized into three areas; open living space, functional level, and development zone. Through the interlocking development, each living unit has its own street-facing entry.

Implementation The sculptural design of the spaces characterizes the various levels in an individual way. Concrete is the main, room-defining material. The spatial density and the use of concrete for furniture appears archaic. The formulation of the openings creates a central motif and gives different appearances to the windows, which take on a new function on every story. Materialized in oak, they appear as fine intarsia in the homogeneous concrete structure. The individual formulation of the stories defines the architectural expression of the façade. Interlocking spaces emerge horizontally and vertically. In this, the development spaces form the closed part of the façade, while living spaces are legible as façade openings. The street- and courtyardfacing floor-to-ceiling glazing enables day-light-flooded spaces, with twelve-meter deep floor plans.......

Konzept Bedingt durch die geringe Parzellenbreite und die beschränkte Gebäudetiefe muss in die Vertikale entwickelt werden. Dies führt zur Stapelung zweier Triplex-Häuser. Zwischen den beiden unmittelbar angrenzenden Bauten erscheint das Haus in seiner Proportion als Wohnturm. Einem Haus wird der Garten, dem zweiten eine Dachterrasse zugeordnet. Die untere Wohnung umfasst das Erdgeschoss, das sich räumlich mit dem umfriedeten Hinterhof verbindet, sowie die ersten beiden Obergeschosse. Die obere Wohnung umfasst das dritte Obergeschoss bis zum Attikageschoss und verfügt sowohl im Attikageschoss als auch auf dem begehbaren Dach über Aussenbereiche. Jede Etage ist in drei Bereiche gegliedert: einen offenen Wohnraum, eine Funktionsschicht und die Erschliessungszone. Jede Wohneinheit erhält durch die ineinandergreifende Erschliessung einen eigenen strassenseitigen Zugang.

Umsetzung Die plastische Durchbildung der Räume charakterisiert die verschiedenen Etagen auf individuelle Art. Beton ist das hauptsächlich raumprägende Material. Die räumliche Dichte und die Verwendung des Betons für Raummöbel muten archaisch an. Die Ausformulierung der Öffnungen bildet ein zentrales Motiv und lässt die Fenster, die auf jeder Etage eine neue Funktion annehmen, unterschiedlich in Erscheinung treten.

In Eiche materialisiert wirken sie wie feine Intarsien in der homogenen Betonstruktur. Die individuelle Ausformulierung der Etagen bestimmt den architektonischen Ausdruck der Fassade. Ineinandergreifende Räume zeichnen sich darauf horizontal und vertikal ab. Dabei bilden die Erschliessungsräume den geschlossenen Teil der Fassade, während die Wohnräume als Fassadenöffnungen lesbar sind. Die strassen- wie hofseitig raumhohen Verglasungen ermöglichen tageslichtdurchflutete Räume bei Grundrissen von zwölf Metern Tiefe....................

Conceito Devido à pequena largura e à profundidade limitada do lote é necessário um desenvolvimento vertical. Isto leva ao emparelhamento de dois edifícios de três pisos. Entre as duas estruturas adjacentes, a construção, nas suas proporções, assemelha-se a uma torre residencial. A uma das habitações é atribuído o jardim, enquanto à outra se atribui um terraço na cobertura. O apartamento inferior compreende o piso térreo, que se liga ao pátio traseiro fechado, e o primeiro e segundo andares. O apartamento superior estende-se desde o terceiro andar até à cobertura através de um piso recuado, pelo que dispõe de áreas exteriores tanto no piso recuado como na cobertura acessível. Cada piso é organizado em três áreas: sala de estar aberta, zona funcional e uma área adaptável a diversos usos. Cada unidade de alojamento tem, através da interligação, a sua própria entrada de frente para a rua........

Implementação O desenho escultural dos espaços caracteriza os vários níveis de forma individual. O betão é o material primordial e definidor dos espaços. A densidade espacial e a utilização do betão como mobiliário aparenta ser arcaica. A formulação das aberturas cria um motivo central e proporciona diferentes aspetos às janelas, as quais assumem uma nova função em cada piso. Materializadas em carvalho, surgem como uma fina marchetaria na homogénea estrutura de betão. A formulação individual dos pisos define a expressão arquitectónica da fachada. Espaços interligados emergem horizontal e verticalmente. Nisto, os espaços de distribuição formam a parte fechada da fachada, enquanto que os espaços de estar são legíveis enquanto aberturas na fachada. Os envidraçados de chão a tecto orientados para a rua e para o pátio originam espaços inundados pela luz natural, com plantas que se estendem por 12 metros.

Ausgangslage An leicht erhöhter Lage am äussersten Rand der Bauzone gelegen, bietet das Grundstück mit gleichmässigem Gefälle freie Sicht ins Birstal und auf die Juraausläufer. Im Rücken der Parzelle grenzt der Wald an, die nordöstliche Hälfte des Grundstücks gilt bereits als Waldzone und ist nicht bebaubar.

Direkt an der Parzellengrenze erstellte Wohnhäuser beeinträchtigen die Sicht.

Contexto O lote de inclinação uniforme, numa pequena elevação no extremo da zona de construção, oferece um vista desobstruída para o vale Birstal e para a colina Jura. A traseira do lote faz fronteira com a floresta; a metade da propriedade a nordeste faz já parte da zona da floresta, não sendo edificável. Casas edificadas contiguamente à propriedade afetam a visibilidade.

Concept The location at the border of the slope-side development and the natural area in the back of the property determine the building concept. A meandering construction, projecting on several sides will be placed on a minimum base. On the side toward the mountain, the volume is level with the forest floor, and on the side toward the valley, it rises above the neighboring roofs. At the furthest end toward the forest, the structure narrows, to then flow continuously across sloping terrain in a series of chamber-like spaces ending in an open large area with a multisided panoramic view. A single large incision interrupts the sequence. As a funnel-like recessed element, the balcony accentuates the viewing side and simultaneously creates a distance to the neighboring structure. The guest area and an open entrance hall are located on the ground floor. As an intimate, spatially dense, enclosed courtyard, the outdoor space cut into the building volume allows direct access from the centre of the house to the garden. A delicate wooden pergola spans and encompasses the courtyard. Whereas the individual spaces are oriented toward the forest, the living spaces on the valley side offer broad views. A projecting terrace platform spatially connects the bedroom with the forest level.

Implementation The residential wing, made of prefabricated wood elements, is built onto the concrete basement. The building is clad in solid pine boards painted dark-brown, whose color and feel reflect the atmosphere of the forest. The interiors are paneled with whiteglazed plywood, generating an intense contrast to the rough exterior shell. The kitchen and chimney of in-situ concrete contrast the soft, wooden dwelling.

Konzept Die Lage am Rand der Hangbebauung und der Naturraum im Rücken des Grundstücks bestimmen das Gebäudekonzept.

Auf ein minimales Grundvolumen wird ein mäandrierender, mehrseitig auskragender Aufbau gesetzt, der bergseitig auf der Ebene des Waldbodens liegt und talseitig über die Nachbardächer ragt. Am äussersten Ende zum Wald hin verjüngt sich der Körper, um anschliessend in einer Reihung von kammerartigen Räumen kontinuierlich mit fallendem Terrain in einen offenen Grossraum mit mehrseitiger Panoramasicht zu münden. Ein einzelner grosser Einschnitt unterbricht die Sequenz. Als trichterartig eingeschnittenes Element akzentuiert die Loggia die Aussichtsseite und wirkt gleichzeitig als Distanzraum zum Nachbargebäude. Im Sockelgeschoss befinden sich der Gästebereich sowie eine offene Eingangshalle.

Der in das Gebäudevolumen eingeschnittene Aussenraum ermöglicht als intimer, räumlich dichter, gefasster Hof den direkten Zugang vom Zentrum des Hauses zum Garten. Eine feingliedrige Holzpergola überspannt und umfasst den Hof. Während sich die Individualräume gegen den Wald richten, bieten die talseitig gelegenen Wohnräume grosszügige Aussicht.

Eine auskragende Terrassenplattform verbindet das Schlafzimmer räumlich mit der Waldebene.

Umsetzung Auf das Sockelgeschoss aus Beton wird der Wohntrakt in vorfabrizierten Holzelementen aufgebaut. Das Gebäude wird mit massiven, dunkelbraun gestrichenen Tannenbrettern eingekleidet, die in ihrer Farbe und Haptik die Stimmung des Waldes widerspiegeln. Die Innenräume werden mit weiss lasierten Sperrholzplatten beplankt, die einen intensiven Kontrast zur rauen Aussenhülle erzeugen. Küche und Cheminée in Ortbeton setzen Akzente im weichen Wohnkörper aus Holz.........

Conceito A localização no limite do desenvolvimento do declive e a área natural nas traseiras da propriedade determinam o conceito da habitação. Uma construção sinuosa, projetando-se multilateralmente, será sobreposta sobre uma base minimal.

Do lado orientado para a montanha o volume é nivelado pelo solo da floresta e do lado orientado para o vale eleva-se acima dos telhados vizinhos. No ponto mais distante em direção à floresta, a estrutura torna-se mais estreita, fluindo continuamente através do terreno inclinado numa série de espaços semelhantes a câmaras que terminam numa ampla área aberta com uma vista multilateral panorâmica. Uma única ampla incisão interrompe a sequência. Tal como um elemento afunilado retraído, a varanda acentua o lado em visualização e cria simultaneamente uma distância entre a estrutura vizinha. A zona de visitas e um pátio de entrada aberto localizam-se no piso térreo. Assim como um pátio íntimo, espacialmente denso e fechado, o espaço exterior estabelece um corte no volume construído, permitindo um acesso direto desde o centro da habitação até ao jardim. Uma delicada pérgola em madeira atravessa e envolve o pátio. Ao passo que os espaços individuais estão orientados para a floresta, os espaços comuns do lado do vale oferecem vistas amplas. Um terraço em consola estabelece a ligação espacial entre o quarto e o nível da floresta.

Implementação A ala residencial, realizada com recurso a elementos de madeira pré-fabricados, é construída sobre a cave de betão. O edifício é revestido a pinho maciço tingido a castanho escuro, refletindo a cor e o toque da atmosfera florestal. Os interiores são concebidos em painéis contraplacados de um branco vítreo, criando um intenso contraste com a áspera casca exterior. A cozinha e a chaminé em betão moldado in situ contrastam com o corpo suave em madeira.

Concept The building's form is shaped by the plot extension, which runs parallel to the slope. The house is conceived with two stories, with a living area on the ground floor and individual rooms, wet rooms, and wellness area on the first floor. The upper floor is developed via a ramp-like staircase. An entrance area in front of the house forms the starting note to a continuous layering of space, parallel to the slope. The room sequence develops from compressed forecourt to open space through a linear alignment of the main residential uses. Continuous glazing enables broad panoramic views. The three-sided, windowless façade has a sculptural look. Zenith lighting defines the atmosphere of the rooms facing the slope. A projecting terrace extending from the volume stretches over the entire width of the building and forms an open counterpart to the windowless back.

Approximating a panorama window, the entire south side of the first floor is glazed from parapet height upward. The roof terrace transforms into a plant trough, which also offers privacy.

A central interior space, which is glazed on all sides, connects all the rooms of the upper floor and opens the view to the south.

Together with the generous bathroom with sauna, it forms a true oasis for relaxation..........

Implementation The concrete building has a visible horizontal formwork structure.

Interior walls and ceilings are also carried out in exposed concrete. The material's raw feel is complemented by the interior design in oak, which together with the oak flooring defines the the interior landscape. The extensive forms make for a uniform atmosphere.

Konzept Die Gebäudeform ist von der parallel zum Hang laufenden Ausdehnung des Grundstücks geprägt. Das Wohnhaus wird zweigeschossig konzipiert mit Wohnbereich im Erdgeschoss und Individualräumen, Nassräumen und Wellnessbereich im Obergeschoss. Die Erschliessung des Obergeschosses erfolgt über eine rampenartige Treppe. Ein dem Wohnhaus vorgelagerter Eintrittshof bildet den Auftakt zu einer kontinuierlichen, parallel zum Hang verlaufenden Raumschichtung. Die Raumsequenz entwickelt sich ausgehend vom komprimierten Vorhof zum offenen Raum, indem sich die Hauptwohnnutzungen linear aufreihen. Die durchlaufende Verglasung ermöglicht ausgedehnte Panorama-sicht. Die dreiseitig fensterlose Fassade wirkt skulptural. Zenitales Licht bestimmt die Atmosphäre der hangseitigen Räume. Eine aus dem Volumen entwickelte, vorgelagerte Terrasse erstreckt sich über die gesamte Gebäudebreite und bildet den offenen Gegenpol zur fensterlosen Rückseite. Gleich einem Panoramafenster wird die gesamte Südseite des Obergeschosses ab Brüstungshöhe verglast. Die Terrassenüberdachung geht an dieser Stelle in einen Pflanztrog über, der gleichzeitig als Sichtschutzelement wirkt. Ein zentraler, allseitig verglaster Binnenraum verbindet alle Räume des Obergeschosses und öffnet diese zur südseitigen Aussicht. In Verbindung mit dem grosszügigen Badezimmer mit Sauna entsteht eine eigentliche Erholungsoase.

Umsetzung Der Baukörper in Beton weist eine sichtbare horizontale Schalungsstruktur auf. Innenwände und Decken werden ebenfalls in Sichtbeton ausgeführt. Die rohe Haptik des Materials wird durch den Innenausbau in Eichenholz ergänzt, der zusammen mit dem Eichenboden die Wohnlandschaft bestimmt.

Raumübergreifende Formen vereinheitlichen die Atmosphäre.

O piso superior desenvolve-se através de uma caixa de escadas que se assemelha a uma rampa. Uma área de entrada na frente da habitação estabelece a nota de partida para uma contínua estratificação dos espaços paralelamente ao declive.

A sequência de espaços desenvolve-se desde o vestíbulo comprimido até ao espaço aberto através de um alinhamento linear dos principais usos residenciais. Envidraçados contínuos proporcionam amplas vistas panorâmicas. A fachada trilateral sem janelas apresenta uma expressão escultural. A atmosfera dos espaços orientados para o declive é definida pela iluminação zenital. Um terraço, que se projecta do volume, estende-se a toda a largura do edifício e constitui a oposição aberta à tardoz fechada. Tal como uma janela panorâmica, todo o lado sul do piso superior é envidraçado desde a altura do parapeito. O terraço da cobertura transforma-se numa floreira que oferece simultaneamente privacidade. Um espaço interior central, envidraçado em todos os lados, estabelece a ligação entre todos os espaços do piso superior e abre a vista para sul que, juntamente com a generosa casa de banho com sauna, se torna um verdadeiro oásis para o relaxamento...........

Implementação O edifício de betão apresenta uma visível estrutura de cofragem horizontal. Paredes interiores e tectos são também executados em betão à vista. A textura crua do material é complementada pelo desenho interior em carvalho que, em conjunto com o soalho, também em carvalho, define a paisagem interior. Background The plot is located in a densely built-up area of single-family homes, which has developed over the past ten years in accordance to a strict land-use plan. Despite this constraint, the neighbourhood is relatively heterogeneous, with each house endeavouring to achieve individuality within the prescribed limits. A two-storey house with a footprint of about 100 m² is required to meet the needs of a young family.

Ausgangslage Das Grundstück befindet sich in einem dicht bebauten Einfamilienhausquartier das in den vergangenen zehn Jahren auf Grundlage eines strikten Bebauungsplans entstanden ist.

Trotz dieser Regelung wirken die Häuser der Nachbarschaft heterogen und jedes versucht sich im Rahmen der Möglichkeiten zu individualisieren. Auf etwa 100m2 Grundfläche soll ein zweigeschossiges Haus für eine junge Familie entwickelt werden.

Contexto O lote localiza-se numa área densamente construída de habitações unifamiliares, que se tem desenvolvido durante a última década de acordo com um plano de ordenamento rigoroso. Apesar desta limitação a vizinhança é relativamente heterogénea, com cada habitação a tentar alcançar a sua individualidade dentro dos limites prescritos. Uma habitação de dois pisos com uma planta de aproximadamente 100 m2 é necessária para ir de encontro às necessidades de uma jovem família.

Concept The architectural design is dominated by a concrete casing detached from the ground except for a few bearing points spanning a hall-like space. The casing encloses a wooden structure separating interior from exterior space. This differentiation gives rise to distinctive areas between the envelope and core. These spatial extensions of the interior spaces are used as places to sit in or as a garage. The "buffer zones" between the house and its neighbourhood create an additional sense of intimacy. Cut-outs in the envelope and large circular holes in the concrete roof admit sufficient light and offer specifically directed views. Ground-floor access is via a narrow door in the gable wall. The elongated structure covered by a gable roof and featuring generous, multipartite glass areas is divided into two residential floors. Functional rooms such as kitchen and bathrooms are located along a building wall made of concrete. The ground floor ceiling recedes from the façade in places, creating building-height rooms connecting ground and upper floors. The master bedroom and a two-storey library are located at the rear of the house towards the garden. Access to the garden is through a door and a long narrow slit in the concrete envelope. A gallery leads to the children's rooms and the bathroom located on the upper floor. The oversized doors can be left open to create a continuous playing area. Views of the outside garden or the sky are framed by the concrete roof or cut-outs in the facade.

Implementation The concreted building casing, which ends just above the ground, is supported by four peripheral inner columns and an internal core. A precisely integrated, dark monochromatic wooden construction is fitted under the concrete envelope and around the core. Subdivision of the rooms is achieved by means of further built-in wooden structures. The gravel of the covered exterior space continues as polished concrete flooring on the ground floor. Good illumination of the interior space and the visual extensions under the casing is guaranteed by large areas of segmented glazing. The interior space can also be expanded by opening the five doors to the outside...............................

Konzept Architektonisch bestimmend ist eine vom Boden losgelöste Betonhülle, die nur an wenigen Punkten aufliegt und einen hallenartigen Raum überspannt. Darunter steht ein Holzbau, der den Innen- vom Aussenraum trennt. Durch die Staffelung des Baukörpers entstehen zwischen Hülle und Kern Räume unterschiedlichen Charakters. Diese werden als Sitzplätze oder Garage genutzt und dienen als räumliche Erweiterung der Innenräume. Sie ermöglichen eine zusätzliche Intimität gleich einem Filter zwischen dem Haus und der Nachbarschaft.

Ausschnitte in der Hülle und grosse kreisrunde Löcher im Betondach sorgen für ausreichend Licht und gezielte Aussichtspunkte. Der Zugang erfolgt ebenerdig durch eine schmale Tür an der Giebelseite. Der längliche Baukörper unter dem Satteldach mit seinen grosszügigen, vielteiligen Glasflächen gliedert sich in zwei Wohnebenen. Entlang eines betonierten Gebäuderückens liegen funktionale Räume wie Küche und Bäder. Die Geschossdecke des Erdgeschosses löst sich teilweise von der Fassade wodurch gebäudehohe Räume entstehen, die Erd- und Obergeschoss miteinander verbinden.

Im hinteren Bereich zum Garten liegen das elterliche Schlafzimmer und die zweigeschossige Bibliothek. Eine Tür und ein hoher schmaler Schlitz in der Betonhülle erlauben den Zutritt in den Garten. Im Obergeschoss werden die Kinderzimmer und das Badezimmer über eine Galerie erschlossen. Stehen die übergrossen Türen offen, weiten sie sich in eine zusammenhängende Spielebene. Der Blick nach aussen führt unters Betondach und durch die Fassadenausschnitte in den eigenen Garten oder in den Himmel.

Umsetzung Die betonierte Gebäudehülle wird von vier peripheren Stützen an der Innenseite und einem innenliegenden Kern getragen und endet kurz über dem Boden. Die monochrom dunkel gehaltene und präzise eingearbeitete Holzkonstruktion legt sich unter die Betonhülle und um den Kern. Mittels weiterer Holzeinbauten im Inneren werden die Räume untergliedert. Der Kies Belag der gedeckten Aussenräume, findet als geschliffener Betonboden im Erdgeschoss eine Übersetzung. Die grossen, stark unterteilten Verglasungen garantieren eine gute Belichtung des Innenraums sowie dessen visuelle Erweiterung unter die Hülle. Sind die fünf ebenerdigen Aussentüren geöffnet, erweitert sich der Innenraum auch räumlich.

Conceito O desenho arquitectónico é dominado por um invólucro de betão - destacado do solo excepto em alguns pontos de apoio - abrangendo um espaço que se assemelha a um átrio. O invólucro encerra uma estrutura de madeira que separa o espaço interior do espaço exterior. Esta diferenciação dá origem a áreas distintas entre o invólucro e o núcleo. Estas extensões espaciais dos espaços interiores são utilizadas como locais para sentar ou como garagem. As zonas tampão entre a habitação e a vizinhança criam um ambiente de intimidade adicional. Recortes no invólucro e largos orifícios circulares na cobertura de betão acolhem luz suficiente e proporcionam vistas especialmente orientadas. O acesso através do piso térreo é feito por via de uma porta estreita na empena. A estrutura alongada sob a cobertura de duas águas, que apresenta generosas áreas envidraçadas plurais, dividese em dois pisos residenciais. Espaços funcionais como a cozinha e as casas de banho localizam-se ao longo da parede de betão. O tecto do piso térreo recua da fachada em certos locais, criando espaços a toda a altura do edifício que estabelecem a ligação entre o piso térreo e o superior. O quarto principal e uma biblioteca que se estende aos dois pisos localizam-se na parte traseira da habitação na orientação do jardim. O acesso ao jardim faz-se através de uma porta e uma longa e estreita fenda que rasga o invólucro de betão. Uma galeria conduz até ao quarto das crianças e à casa de banho do piso superior. Deixando as portas de grande dimensão abertas cria-se um jogo contínuo entre espaços. As vistas para o jardim e para o céu são enquadradas pela cobertura de betão e pelos recortes na fachada.

Implementação O invólucro de betão, que termina imediatamente antes de atingir o solo, é suportado por quatro colunas internas periféricas e pelo núcleo interno. Uma construção em madeira escura monocromática precisamente integrada é instalada sob o invólucro de betão e em torno do núcleo. A subdivisão dos espaços é alcançada por meio de estruturas de madeira embutidas adicionais. A gravilha do espaço exterior traduz-se no interior pelo pavimento em betão polido do piso térreo. A boa iluminação do espaço interior e a extensão visual sob o invólucro são garantidas através de grandes áreas segmentadas por envidraçados. Background A diverse range of housing options is planned for the site in Bächtelen which, in order to fit in with the existing heterogeneity of the surrounding area, is not planned as a large-scale development or homogeneous housing typology. On the basis of a market analysis, five different themes were defined: living with a view, courtyard living, living with trees, patio living and balcony living.The area was divided into five building zones.

Each zone is assigned specific rules reflecting the theme, on the basis of which the types of building created are intended to enter into a dialogue with the surroundings...................

Ausgangslage Auf dem Grundstück Bächtelen soll ein vielfältiges Wohnangebot entstehen, das zugunsten der vorgefundenen Heterogenität der Umgebung nicht als Grossform oder homogene Siedlungstypologie geplant ist. Anhand einer Marktanalyse wurden fünf verschiedene Themen definiert: Wohnen mit Aussicht, Wohnen am Hof, Wohnen im Baumhain, Wohnen mit Patio und Wohnen mit Balkon. Das Areal wurde in fünf Baufelder aufgeteilt. Jedem Baufeld sind den Themen entsprechend spezifische Regeln zugeordnet, anhand derer die entstehenden Gebäudetypen in einen Dialog mit der Umgebung treten sollen.

Concept The project theme living with a view led to the design of a new form of high-rise apartment building with an amorphous form which resists any clear typological classification...The tower block is formed on a polygonal footprint and extends its floor area as it rises vertically. It is open on all sides, emphasizing the relationship with the landscape...The building is set back from the street. The resulting gap in the pattern of development reflects the new building sequence. The building rises out of the ascending topography into the form of a tower...................

Konzept Das Projektthema Wohnen mit Aussicht führt zum Entwurf eines neuartigen Wohnturms, dessen amorphe Form sich einer klaren typologischen Zuweisung widersetzt. Der Turm wird auf einer polygonalen Grundfläche geformt und erweitert in der vertikalen Entwicklung seine Grundfläche. Er öffnet sich allseitig und unterstreicht den Bezug zur Landschaft. Das Gebäude wird von der Strasse zurückgesetzt. Die im Bebauungsmuster entstehende Fuge verweist auf die neue Bausequenz. Aus der ansteigenden Topografie wächst das Gebäude zum Turm.

Contexto Uma vasta gama de opções habitacionais é planeada para o lote em Bächtelen que, de forma a atender à heterogeneidade da área envolvente, não é projectado como uma construção de grande escala ou como uma construção de tipologia homogénea. Com base numa análise de mercado, cinco temáticas distintas foram definidas: vida com vista, vida no campo, vida com árvores, vida com pátio e vida com varanda.

A área foi dividida em cinco zonas de construção. A cada zona são atribuídas regras específicas que reflectem as temáticas com base nas quais os tipos de construção criados visam dialogar com a envolvente.

Implementation The concrete slabs which project on all sides create a rocklike effect. A rhomboidpatterned metallic mesh is stretched over the porous structure. The fields of view resulting from partial incisions are framed by large metal frames. The different uses of the encircling balcony slabs determine their form and are developed into the architectural leitmotif. The resulting marginal contour can be read as a re-drawing of the topography of the mountains. The garden develops vertically over the metal mesh enclosing the rock-like main structure, providing shade.

The planting is harmonized with the development of the building and its orientation. The floor plans of the apartments are open and determined by their multifaceted orientation and the priority given to free circulation.

Umsetzung Die allseitig auskragenden Betonplatten lassen eine steinerne Wirkung entstehen. Ein rautenförmiges Metallnetz umspannt die poröse Struktur. Die aus partiellen Ausschnitten entstehenden Sichtfelder werden von grossen Metallbügeln gerahmt. Die Nutzungsthemen der umlaufenden Balkonplatten prägen deren Form und entwickeln sich zum architektonischen Leitmotiv. Die entstehende Randkontur kann als Nachzeichnung der Gebirgstopografie gelesen werden. Über das metallene Netz, das den steinernen Körper umhüllt, entwickelt sich der Garten vertikal als Schattenspender für die Wohnbereiche. Die Bepflanzungen werden direkt auf die Gebäudeabwicklung und deren Orientierung abgestimmt. Die Grundrisse der Wohnungen sind offen gestaltet und von der vielseitigen Orientierung sowie den freien Zirkulationsthemen bestimmt.

Conceito A temática vida com vista levou ao projecto de uma nova forma de edifício de apartamentos em altura com uma forma amorfa que resiste a qualquer classificação tipológica clara. O bloco da torre é formado sobre uma planta poligonal e estende a sua área à medida que se eleva verticalmente. É aberto em todos os lados, enfatizando a relação com a paisagem. O edifício é recuado em relação à rua. A quebra criada no padrão de desenvolvimento reflete-se na nova sequência construtiva.

O edifício eleva-se em forma de torre a partir da topografia ascendente.

Implementação As lajes de betão que se projetam em todas as direcções criam um efeito semelhante a pedra. A malha metálica em padrão rombóide é esticada sobre a estrutura porosa. Os campos de visão resultantes das incisões parciais são enquadrados por grandes armações metálicas. Os diferentes usos das lajes circundantes da varanda determinam a sua forma e desenvolvem-se no leitmotiv arquitectónico. O contorno marginal criado pode ser lido como um redesenhar da topografia das montanhas. O jardim desenvolve-se verticalmente sobre a malha metálica que encerra a estrutura principal. As plantações estão intimamente relacionadas com o desenvolvimento do edifício e a sua orientação. The projects realised by our office are a sophisticated reflection of this committed analysis. The architecture – whose large part of its force is based on the fluency with which ostensible contrasts are unified, and which only reveals its underlying conceptual principles at second glance – aims at achieving a genuine stance with an ethic consciousness and social relevance.

On the one hand our buildings react sensitively in their urban surroundings, but at the same time have a unique plastic presence. A large number of our projects originated in the field of contemporary art, i.e. were developed and designed for art collectors, curators, gallery-owners, and with or for artists. We consider the intensive engagement with contemporary art and the transfer between the various visual cultures to be an ideal opportunity to explore potential fields of perception and requirement.

At root, the crux of our work is the relation between humans and space. In the process, with a view to the built and the cultural context, the rule we follow is to continually rework the programme and the sensory requirements until the point where a spatial conglomerate crystallises from the raw materials – a conglomerate framed by a coherent technical construction and haptic, sensual surfaces. This in turn means that negative space, respectively empty space, plays a decisive role both in urban planning as well as in the smallest spatial element.

We follow an aesthetic of retaining and sustainability. This involves an understanding of what is universally valid in tradition, supplementing it and incorporating it in the present and the future.

Die realisierten Projekte unseres Architekturbüros widerspiegeln diese engagierte Recherche auf hohen Niveau. Die Architektur, die einen Grossteil ihrer Kraft daraus entwickelt, dass sie scheinbare Gegensätze mit Leichtigkeit vereint und die ihre konzeptuell festgelegten Prinzipien erst in einem zweiten Blick offenbart, zielt auf eine authentische Haltung mit ethischem Bewusstsein und gesellschaftlicher Relevanz.

Die von uns projektierten Gebäude reagieren einerseits sensibel im städtebaulichem Umfeld, haben aber zudem eine eigenständige, plastische Präsenz. Zahlreiche unserer Projekte sind im Umfeld zeitgenössischer Kunst entstanden, d.h. für Kunstsammler, Kuratoren, Galeristen, mit oder für Künstler entwickelt und entworfen worden. Die intensive Beschäftigung mit zeitgenössischer Kunst und dem Transfer zwischen den verschiedensten visuellen Kulturen, betrachten wir als eine hervorragende Möglichkeit Wahrnehmungs- und Anspruchsfelder auszuloten.

Os projectos realizados pelo nosso escritório são uma reflexão sofisticada desta análise comprometida e empenhada. A arquitectura - em que uma grande parte da sua força é baseada na fluência com que cada contraste ostensivo é unificado, e que apenas revela os seus princípios conceptuais subjacentes num segundo olhar - visa alcançar uma posição genuína com consciência ética e relevância social.

Por um lado, os nossos edifícios reagem com sensibilidade ao ambiente urbano, mas têm, simultaneamente, uma presença plástica singular. Grande parte dos nossos projectos tiveram origem no campo da arte contemporânea, isto é foram desenvolvidos e desenhados para coleccionadores de arte, curadores, donos de galerias de arte, e com ou para artistas.

Consideramos o intensivo compromisso com a arte contemporânea e a transferência entre as várias culturas visuais como uma oportunidade ideal para explorar potenciais campos de percepção e exigência.

Grundsätzlich steht die Beziehung Mensch-Raum im Mittelpunkt; Dabei gilt es, mit Blick auf den gebauten und kulturellen Kontext, Programm und sinnliche Anforderungen so lange zu bearbeiten, bis sich aus den Rohstoffen ein räumliches Konglomerat herauskristallisiert, gehalten von einer kohärenten technischen Konstruktion mit haptisch sinnlichen Oberflächen. Dabei spielt der Negativraum, respektive der Leerraum, sowohl im Städtebau als auch in der kleinsten räumlichen Einheit eine entscheidende Rolle.

No processo, com vista para o contexto cultural e construído, a regra que seguimos é: reformular, de forma contínua, o programa e os requisitos sensoriais até ao ponto em que um conglomerado espacial se cristaliza a partir das matérias-primas - um conglomerado enquadrado por uma construção técnica coerente e superfícies hápticas e sensitivas.

Isto, por sua vez, significa que o espaço negativo, espaço vazio respectivo, tem um papel decisivo tanto no planeamento urbano como no menor elemento espacial.

The task was to create a reasonably priced residential space with high standards of living comfort for four differently sized parties. In the process, each party was to profit as much as possible on the one hand from the 3000 m2 south-facing environs, and on the other from the north-facing view over the city. This determined an unconventional and complex internal organisation of the building. All four apartments are accessible via a two-storey entrance hall, each of them having their own internal staircase of one or two floors. In principle, the two double-storey apartments and the two roof apartments are encapsulated in each other so that the quality of the four-sided building is fully exploited. In addition, one of the roof apartments also has access to the garden.

Das Mehrfamilienhaus am Fusse des Uetlibergs hat zum Ziel, preisgünstigen Wohnraum mit hohem Wohnwert für vier unterschiedlich grosse Parteien zu schaffen. Dabei soll jede Partei möglichst gleichwertig einerseits von dem südseitigen 3000 m2 grossen Umschwung, andererseits von der nordseitigen Sicht über die Stadt profitieren. Dies generierte eine unkonventionelle, komplexe innere Organisation des Gebäudes.

Von einem zweigeschossigen Eingangsraum werden alle 4 Wohnungen erschlossen, die jeweils über eine eigene interne Treppe über ein oder zwei Geschosse verfügen. Grundsätzlich sind zwei Duplexwohnungen und zwei Attikawohnungen so ineinander verschachtelt, dass die Qualität des auf vier Seiten orientierten Gebäudes voll ausgeschöpft werden konnte. Eine Attikawohnung verfügt zudem auch über einen Gartenzugang.

A tarefa consistia em criar um espaço residencial de preço razoável com elevados padrões de conforto para quatro partes de dimensões distintas. No processo, cada fracção deveria lucrar, tanto quanto possível, dos 3000 m2 dos arredores voltados a sul e da vista sobre a cidade voltada a norte. Isto determinou uma organização interna do edifício pouco convencional e complexa. Os quatro apartamentos são acessíveis através de um átrio de entrada de pé-direito duplo, tendo cada um deles a sua própria caixa de escadas interna.

Por princípio, os dois apartamentos inferiores e os dois superiores são encapsulados um no outro para que a qualidade do edifício de quatro frentes fosse totalmente aproveitada.

Para além disso, um dos apartamentos superiores tem também acesso ao jardim.

Die Intention der Bauherrschaft war ein Low Budget-Bau, was die Materialisierung ganz bewusst unterstreicht. Die gewählten Materialien sind gängige, unveredelte Baumaterialien wie Beton, Holz und verzinkter Stahl, die spannungsvoll zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Der präzise Einbau der farbigen Küchen mit spiegelnden Glasabdeckungen und die grossflächigen bunten Glasverkleidungen der Wände in den Nasszellen kontrastieren den groben Beton und die organischen Holzmuster. Das Kellergeschoss, die vertikalen Treppentürme und die Trennwände zwischen den Wohneinheiten sind in Ortbeton (Schalungstyp 1) gefertigt. Dadurch werden feuerpolizeiliche und akustische Anforderungen erfüllt, die der Holzelementbau, aus dem mehrheitlich die restliche Raumstruktur besteht, generiert. Der Betonkern bildet das ‚Skelett? des eigentlichen Holzhauses, das mit seiner organischen Weichheit das Rohe des Betons überhöht. Decken und Wände bestehen aus vorfabrizierten, isolierten Holzelementen aus Fichte. Die Deckenelemente werden am Betonkern und den Wandelementen der Aussenfassade befestigt. Die Innenflächen bestehen an den Wänden aus Kistensperrholz, an den Decken aus Dreischichtplatten.

Konstruktion und Raumbegrenzung sind kongruent, die einzelnen Bauteile und die Arbeitsprozesse ablesbar. Der Holzbau erhält durch die leicht polygonale Geometrie den Charakter eines vom Schreiner hergestellten Möbelstückes. So stand bei der Vorfertigung nicht der Vorteil der Repetition des identischen Bauelementes im Vordergrund, sondern die bequeme Herstellung im Werk und die schnelle Montage in drei Tagen. Die heutige Technik ermöglicht es, Vorfabrikation auch bei komplexen Raumstrukturen und polygonalen Geometrien erfolgreich anzuwenden. Allerdings müssen geringfügige Unpräzisionen bei gefügten Bauteilen einkalkuliert werden....

A intenção dos clientes consistia em criar um edifício de baixo orçamento que, deliberadamente, se destacasse pelo uso dos materiais. Materiais comuns e em bruto como o betão, a madeira e o aço galvanizado foram escolhidos, que, quando combinados, se avivam mutuamente. A introdução precisa de cozinhas coloridas com superfícies espelhadas e o extenso painel de vidro colorido das paredes das casas de banho contrastam com a aspereza do betão e os padrões orgânicos da madeira. A cave, a caixa de escadas e as paredes divisórias entre os apartamentos são em betão moldado in situ (cofragem básica). Isto assegura que as exigências a nível de resistência ao fogo e acústica definidas pelos elementos de madeira, que constituem a maior parte da restante estrutura espacial, são alcançadas. O núcleo de betão constitui o "esqueleto" da verdadeira estrutura de madeira, cuja suavidade orgânica potencia a crueza do betão. Os tetos e paredes são realizados em elementos pré-fabricados e isolados em madeira de abeto.

Os elementos do teto estão fixados ao núcleo de betão e aos elementos da parede da fachada externa. As superfícies interiores consistem em contraplacado nas paredes e tetos revestidos a madeira. A construção e o delinear das divisões são congruentes; os elementos individuais do edifício e os processos de construção legíveis. Devido à sua geometria ligeiramente poligonal, os elementos de madeira apresentam características de uma peça de artesão. No pré-fabrico, acima de tudo, não foram as vantagens que a repetição de componentes idênticos de construção proporciona, mas sim a facilidade de fabrico e rápida montagem que permitiram que esta durasse apenas três dias. Tecnologias actuais permitem também que o pré-fabrico seja aplicado com sucesso a estruturas espaciais complexas e geometrias poligonais...........

The intention of the clients was to create a low-budget building, deliberately emphasised by the use of materials. Commonplace and unrefined materials such as concrete, timber, wood and galvanised steel were chosen, which when combined animated each other. The precise insertion of coloured kitchens with reflective glass surfacing and the extensive coloured glass panelling of the walls in the bathrooms contrast with the coarse concrete and the organic patterns of the wood. The basement, the stairwells and the partitioning walls between the apartment units are made of concrete cast in situ (basic shuttering). This guarantees that the fire proofing and acoustic demands set by the timber elements, which constitute the majority of the rest of the spatial structure, are met. The concrete core constitutes the "skeleton” of the actual wooden structure, the organic softness of which heightens the rawness of the concrete. The ceilings and walls are made of prefabricated, isolated wooden elements of spruce. The ceiling elements are secured to the concrete core and the wall elements of the external façade.

The interior surfaces consist of boxing plywood on the walls and bonded boarding on the ceilings. The construction and the delineation of the rooms are congruous; the individual building elements and the building processes are legible. Due to their slightly polygonal geometry, the wooden elements have the characteristics of a piece of carpenter's furniture. Foremost in the prefabrication were not the advantages provided by the repetition of identical building components, but rather the ease of factory fabrication and a rapid assembly that took three days.

Current technology also allows prefabrication to be successfully applied to complex spatial structures and polygonal geometry.

The building was arranged on the property's periphery so that the distance to the neighbouring houses was as large as possible and so that the option of constructing another building could be left open. The concrete cellar anchors the building in the sloping terrain and houses the entrance area and the technical servicing, on top of which the building's wooden volume appears something like a ship. This floor juts out to a great extent towards the east so that a covered, protected entrance is created.

Das Gebäude wurde peripher auf dem Grundstück angeordnet, damit der Abstand zu den Nachbarshäusern grösstmöglichst ist und die Option eines weiteren Neubaus erhalten bleibt. Auf dem Betonkeller, der das Gebäude im abfallenden Terrain verankert und den Eingangsraum und die Technik aufnimmt, ist das hölzerne, in seiner Form an ein Schiff erinnerndes Gebäudevolumen aufgelegt. Dieses kragt gegen Osten massiv aus, sodass ein gedeckter, geschützter Eingang entsteht.

O edifício foi disposto na periferia da propriedade de forma a que a distância entre as habitações vizinhas fosse tão grande quanto possível e a possibilidade de construção de um outro edifício pudesse ficar em aberto. A cave em betão fixa o edifício ao terreno inclinado e abriga a área de entrada e serviços técnicos, no topo dos quais se encontra um volume em madeira que se assemelha a uma embarcação. Este pavimento expandese numa grande extensão em direcção a este de forma a criar uma entrada abrigada e protegida.

The concrete chimney of the open fireplace rises like a mast out of the cellar, and together with a concrete wall forms the bracing backbone behind which the two single-flight staircases connect the 3 storeys. On the ground floor is a large living room spread over two different levels and with different ceiling heights.

The deliberately low area containing the kitchen creates, in fact, a spatial feeling like that generated in the low parlours in mountain huts. The 5 meter long fixed-glazed panorama window, which frames the breathtaking view like a picture, nevertheless introduces a contemporary modernity. The polygonal plan form makes a differentiated spatial division possible and gives the open fireplace its particular status at the widest spot in the room..........

Der Betonkamin des Cheminées wächst mastartig aus dem Keller und bildet zusammen mit einer Betonwand das aussteifende Rückgrat, hinter dem die beiden einläufigen Treppen die 3 Geschosse verbinden. Im Erdgeschoss befindet sich ein grosses Wohnraum auf zwei verschiedenen Niveaus und mit verschiedenen Raumhöhen. Der bewusst sehr niedere Bereich mit der Küche erzeugt tatsächlich ein Raumgefühl, wie man es aus den niederen Stuben von Berghäusern kennt. Das 5 Meter lange, festverglaste Panoramafenster, das die wunderbare Aussicht wie ein Bild rahmt, bringt jedoch eine zeitgemässe Modernität hinein. Die polygonale Grundrissform ermöglicht eine differenzierte Raumverteilung und gibt dem Cheminée an der breitesten Stelle einen besonderen Stellenwert..

A chaminé em betão da lareira ergue-se como um mastro para além da cave e, juntamente com a parede em betão, forma a revigorante espinha dorsal atrás da qual as duas caixas de escada de um único lanço ligam os três pisos. No piso térreo encontra-se uma ampla sala de estar que se estende a dois níveis diferentes e que apresenta dois pés-direitos distintos.

A área deliberadamente baixa que contém a cozinha cria, de facto, um sentimento espacial semelhante ao criado nos nas cabanas de montanha. A janela panorâmica fixa de 5 metros de comprimento, que emoldura a vista deslumbrante como se de um quadro se tratasse, introduz uma contemporaneidade moderna. A planta poligonal torna possível uma divisão espacial diferenciada e dá à lareira um estatuto especial no ponto mais amplo da sala.

The location of the new cemetery building constructionally brackets the grounds of the cemetery directly on the Lake of Zurich and the parallel lie of the church, placing the two buildings in dialogue with each other and spanning the graveyards between them. As opposed to the church, the functionally hybrid building is conceived as a pavilion to serve the secluded, intimate atmosphere of a cemetery. All of the uses are combined in a free form under a massive roof. Situated in the center are the rooms of the funeral parlour, which are accessed via a glazed corridor facing the cemetery. The mostly opaque green panes provide a visual barrier, and the space forms an important interim area in which to prepare for the encounter with the deceased. The walnut paneling and the natural zenithal lighting give the funeral parlour an appropriate dignity, but also a warmth and comfort.

The introversion of the spaces provides the silence for mourning and to takeleave of the deceased.

Das direkt am Zürichsee liegende Friedhofareal wird durch die Situierung des neuen Friedhofgebäudes zusammen mit der parallel ausgerichteten Kirche baulich gefasst; die beiden Gebäude treten in einen Dialog und spannen die Grabfelder zwischen sich auf. Das funktional hybride Gebäude wird, im Gegensatz zur Kirche, als Pavillon gedacht, der der weltabgewandten, intimeren Atmosphäre eines Friedhofs dient.

Sämtliche Nutzungen werden in einer zwanglosen Form unter einem massiven Dach zusammenfasst. Im Kern liegen die Aufbahrungsräume, die über einen gegen den Friedhof verglasten Gang erschlossen werden, der durch grüne, meist opake Gläser einen Sichtschutz bietet und einen wichtigen Zwischenbereich in der Vorbereitung auf die Begegnung mit dem Verstorbenen bildet. Die Aufbahrungsräume erhalten durch die Auskleidung mit Nussbaumholz und den zenitalen Lichteinfall eine angemessene Erhabenheit, aber auch Wärme und Wohnlichkeit. Die Introvertiertheit der Räume ermöglicht die nötige Ruhe für Trauer und Abschiednehmen.

Construtivamente, a situação do novo cemitério enquadra os terrenos do cemitério directamente sobre o lago de Zurique e a linha paralela da igreja, colocando os dois edifícios em diálogo e estendendo os túmulos entre eles. Em oposição à igreja, o edifício funcionalmente híbrido é concebido como um pavilhão para servir o ambiente íntimo e isolado do cemitério.

Todos os usos são combinados de uma forma livre sob uma cobertura maciça. Situados no centro, encontram-se as divisões da casa funerária, que são acessíveis através de um corredor envidraçado voltado para o cemitério. Os painéis verdes, na sua maioria opacos, proporcionam uma barreira visual, formando uma importante área para preparar o encontro com os defuntos.

Os painéis em nogueira e a luz zenital natural dão à casa funerária uma dignidade adequada, mas também aconchego e conforto. A introversão dos espaços proporciona o silêncio para o luto e para a despedida dos defuntos.

The visitors’ room and the covered exterior space are orientated towards the most beautiful point overlooking the lake, and where small ceremonies can be held. Two perforated, ornamental concrete wall elements in the covered outside area create a protective but simultaneously solemn atmosphere.

The archaic concrete construction contrasts pleasurably with the lightness of the glass façade, creating an abstract symbolism.

The colouring of the panes of the façade in various tones of green and brown makes the pavilion part of the natural surroundings and is tied to a long tradition of applying coloured glass in the sacred buildings of different cultures. The architectural expression of the building is intended to help the mourners coming to terms with the exceptional circumstances in which they find themselves, and to provide a dignified and contemporary setting for the mourning rituals of all confessions.

Der Besucherraum und der gedeckte Aussenraum befinden sich am schönsten Ort auf den See ausgerichtet, wo kleine Trauerfeiern stattfinden können. Zwei perforierte, ornamentale Wandelemente aus Beton schaffen im gedeckten Aussenbereich eine geschützte und zugleich feierliche Atmosphäre. Die archaische Betonkonstruktion wird durch die Leichtigkeit der Glasfassade spannungsvoll kontrastiert und erzeugt eine abstrakte Symbolik. Durch die Farbgebung der Fassadengläser in verschiedenen Grün- und Brauntönen wird der Pavillon Teil der ihn umgebenden Natur und knüpft an eine lange Tradition der Verwendung von farbigem Glas in Sakralbauten der unterschiedlichsten Kulturen an. Der architektonische Ausdruck des Gebäudes soll in der Bewältigung der Ausnahmesituation, in der sich Trauernde befinden, unterstützend wirken und einen würdevollen, zeitgemässen Rahmen für die Trauerrituale aller Konfessionen bilden.

A sala de visita e o espaço exterior coberto estão orientados para o ponto com a melhor vista para o lago, onde também podem ser realizadas pequenas cerimónias. Dois elementos das paredes em betão ornamental perfurado na área exterior coberta criam um ambiente protector, mas simultaneamente solene. A construção arcaica em betão contrasta prazerosamente com a leveza da fachada envidraçada, criando um simbolismo abstracto. A cor dos painéis da fachada em diversos tons de verde e castanho tornam o pavilhão parte da envolvente natural e está ligada a uma longa tradição de aplicação de envidraçados coloridos em edifícios sagrados de diferentes culturas. A expressão arquitectónica do edifício pretende ajudar os enlutados a lidar com as circunstâncias excepcionais em que se encontram e proporcionar um cenário digno e contemporâneo para os rituais de luto e de todas as confissões.

The house for a family with two children is situated on a former hillside vineyard that had remained undeveloped. On the northern slope of the hill adjoining a non-developable zone, the house is surrounded by large old trees. In order to be able to even use the site it was necessary to terrace the immediate surroundings, and the house was developed along the lines of the formed topography. In the process, the four terraces themselves function as exterior spaces, each corresponding to a specific interior space. The unusual topography is also mirrored in the construction of the building. The connection to the terrain is a stepped, largely subterranean basement storey made of internally insulated exposed concrete, above which is a prefabricated wooden construction with a ventilated Eternit façade. The large-format plates are a prototype with a textile-like embossing, producing a raw and haptic appearance.

Das Haus für eine Familie mit zwei Kindern liegt an einem ehemaligen Rebhang, der noch unbebaut war. Nordseitig unmittelbar an die Freihaltezone grenzend, ist das Haus umgeben von grossem, altem Baumbestand. Um das extrem steile Gelände überhaupt nutzbar zu machen, wurde die unmittelbare Umgebung terrassiert und aus dieser geformten Topographie heraus das Wohnhaus entwickelt. Die vier Terrassen funktionieren dabei selbst wie Aussenzimmer, welche jeweils einem spezifischen Innenraum zugeordnet sind. Die aussergewöhnliche Topographie spiegelt sich auch in der Konstruktion wider. Ein abgestuftes, grösstenteils unterirdisches Sockelgeschoss aus innengedämmtem Sichtbeton übernimmt die Anschlüsse an das Terrain, darüber legt sich ein vorfabrizierter Holzbau mit hinterlüfteter Eternitfassade. Die grossformatigen Platten sind ein Prototyp mit textiler Prägung, welche eine rohe und haptische Erscheinung erzeugt.

A casa para uma família com duas crianças situa-se numa antiga vinha numa ladeira que se manteve subdesenvolvida.

Na encosta norte da colina, contígua a uma zona não desenvolvida, a casa é rodeada por árvores antigas de grande porte. De forma a tornar possível a utilização do local, foi necessário socalcar as imediações, desenvolvendo a casa ao longo das linhas da topografia então criada. No processo, os quatro socalcos funcionam como espaços exteriores, correspondendo cada um a um espaço interior específico. A topografia invulgar reflecte-se também na própria construção do edifício. A ligação ao terreno consiste num piso de cave em degraus, maioritariamente subterrâneo, construído em betão à vista isolado internamente, sobre o qual se encontra uma construção pré-fabricada em madeira com uma fachada Eternit ventilada. As placas de grande formato são um protótipo com uma gravação em relevo tipo têxtil, que produzem uma estética crua e texturada.

Inside, a stairway core constitutes the centre of a spatial sequence that unfolds over three storeys. At the entrance level are the children’s rooms, with the cellar rooms at the back. The floor above is set back, creating differentiated spatial heights for the different areas of the house. The doorways on the intermediate level with the living rooms and the parent’s bedroom allow a free circular movement. Due to building regulations, the roof above the living room slopes parallel with the terrain, and runs directly over into the flat roof of the studio and the guest room in the upper storey. A roof light running the entire width of the building creates a studio-like character at the top, simultaneously lighting the high living room.

Im Innern bildet ein Treppenkern das Zentrum einer räumlichen Abfolge, welche sich über drei Geschosse entwickelt. Im Eingangsgeschoss befinden sich die Kinderzimmer, rückseitig die Kellerräume. Eine Abstufung des darüber liegenden Bodens schafft differenzierte Raumhöhen für diese unterschiedlichen Bereiche. Im mittleren Geschoss mit den Wohnräumen und dem Elternzimmer erlauben Türverbindungen einen Rundlauf.

Das Dach über dem Wohnraum, aus baurechtlichen Gründen parallel zum Terrain ansteigend, geht direkt über in das Flachdach des Atelier- und Gastraums auf der obersten Ebene.

Ein Oblicht über die ganze Breite erzeugt oven einen Ateliercharakter und beleuchtet zugleich den hohen Wohnraum.

No interior, um núcleo de escadaria constitui o centro de uma sequência espacial que se desenvolve ao longo dos três pisos.

Ao nível da entrada situam-se os quartos das crianças, com os quartos de cave nas traseiras. O piso superior é recuado, criando alturas espaciais diferenciadas para as diferentes áreas da casa. As entradas no nível intermédio, onde se encontram as salas de estar e o quarto dos pais, permitem um movimento livre circular. Devido a regulamentos construtivos, o telhado sobre a sala de estar inclina-se paralelamente ao terreno e estende-se directamente à cobertura plana do estúdio e do quarto de hóspedes situados no piso superior. Um lanternim, que se estende a toda a largura do edifício, confere um ambiente de estúdio no topo, iluminando simultaneamente a sala de estar superior.

Urban Planning The urban-planning situation was so chosen that a generous private open space was defined by the formation of a back to the building facing the light incline of the slope and the neighbouring house to the East. The positioning of the volumes of the residential buildings above ground level is based on an analysis of the most optimal visual axes and vantage points, taking account of the concept-specific double-sided orientation of the houses. The discreet polygonal volumes of the two buildings are the result of ideas of visual privacy and vantage points, and with their slanted roofs they constitute a single entity. The concave and convex recesses enter into a dialogue with the exterior space, producing clearly defined and encompassed spaces to relax. A sculptural quality is generated, lending the buildings plasticity and a certain lightness. The form and the expression of the buildings therefore aim to fulfill both contextual and formal aspects. The arrangement of the facades follows the same principles. The concept involved is not one of houses with roofs, but rather of building shapes in which the surfaces of the roofs represent a "fifth" facade.

Städtebau Die städtebauliche Situation wurde so gewählt, dass durch die Bildung eines Rückens gegenüber dem leicht ansteigenden Hang und dem östlich gelegen Nachbarhaus ein grosszügiger privater Freiraum definiert wird. Die Setzung der Volumetrien für die oberirdischen Wohnbauten beruht auf eine Eruierung der optimalsten Sichtachsen und Blickwinkel, welche diese kontextpsezifische zweiseitige Orientierung der Häuser berücksichtigt. Die diskret polygonale Volumetrie der beiden Baukörper folgt den Überlegungen von Sichtschutz und Sichtachsen und bildet mit den abgeschrägten Dächern eine Einheit. Die konkaven und konvexen Einbuchtungen, treten mit dem Aussenraum in einen Dialog und es entstehen klar definierte und gefasste Aufenthaltsbereiche. Es entsteht eine skulpturale Qualität, die den Gebäuden Plastizität und eine gewisse Leichtigkeit verleiht. Form und Ausdruck der Bauten folgen also sowohl kontextbezogenen wie auch formalen Aspekten. Die Setzung der Fenster in der Fassade folgt denselben Prinzipien.

Es handelt sich hierbei nicht mehr um Häuser mit einem Dach, sondern um Gebäudekörper, bei der die Dachflächen die "fünfte" Fassade darstellen.

Planeamento urbano A situação de planeamento urbano foi assim escolhida de forma a que um generoso espaço aberto fosse definido através da formação da tardoz do edifício orientada para a pequena inclinação do declive e da habitação vizinha a Este. O posicionamento dos volumes dos edifícios residenciais acima do nível do solo é baseado na análise dos pontos e eixos visuais mais favoráveis, tendo em conta a orientação bilateral conceptualmente específica das habitações. Os volumes poligonais discretos dos dois edifícios são o resultado de ideias de privacidade visual e pontos de observação, que, com os seus telhados inclinados, constituem um entidade singular. As reentrâncias côncavas e convexas entram em diálogo com o espaço exterior, produzindo espaços para relaxar claramente definidos e enquadrados. Uma qualidade escultural é criada, dando aos edifícios plasticidade e uma certa leveza. A forma e a expressão dos edifícios pretendem, consequentemente, satisfazer tanto aspectos contextuais como formais.

A disposição das fachadas segue o mesmo princípio.

O conceito envolvido não é um de casas com telhados, mas, sim, de construir formas em que as superfícies dos telhados representem uma "quinta" fachada.

Programme The commission consisted of replacing the existing double single-family houses with two single-family houses connected to each other via an underground wellness area. Both houses are reached by a footpath through the garden that connects the two exterior levels to each other. A "promenade architecturale" leads from the shared underground garage on beneath skylights to each of the vertical circulation cores of the houses. The entrance areas in each of the ground floors unite the internal and external access routes. The polygonal form of the floor plan enables a differentiated spatial distribution. This means that the living areas are arranged around the orthogonally organised circulation cores. The rooms between these orthogonal structures and the folded progression of the facade form a spatial continuum that extends onwards to the upper storeys.

The double-storey living rooms form the main spatial focuses of the houses. The other rooms develop outwards from them around the circulation cores, which are enhanced by an open fireplace. The master areas arranged at both roof levels include a walk-in wardrobe, a large bathroom and direct access to the roof terrace. The exterior spaces are set in the framework, mounting the views - to the West of the site to the woods, and to the South out over Lake Zurich. The two houses differ in terms of the contrasting alignments and situations of the volumes.

A further underground connection to the two volumes leads through the wellness area. The core zone stretches parallel to the swimming pool and contains a dressing room, bathroom/WC, a steam bath and a sauna. The access area around the 15metre-long pool provides space for deckchairs and weight and fitness machines. An important element in the subterranean

Programm Der Auftrag bestand darin, anstelle der bestehenden zwei Doppel-Einfamilienhäuser, zwei separate Einfamilienhäuser zu entwerfen, welche unterirdisch durch ein Wellness Bereich miteinander verbunden sind. Die beiden Häuser werden über einen Fussweg durch den Garten erschlossen, welcher die beiden Niveaus im Aussenraum miteinander verbindet. Von der gemeinsamen Tiefgarage, führt eine "promenade architecturale" unter Oblichtern vorbei zu den jeweiligen vertikalen Erschliessungskernen der Häuser. Die Eingangsbereiche in den jeweiligen Erdgeschossen vereinen die internen und externen Zugänge. Die polygonale Grundrissform ermöglicht eine differenzierte Raumverteilung.

So sind die Wohnräume rund um den orthogonalen Erschliessungskern und einem sekundären Servicekern organisiert. Die Räume zwischen diesen orthogonalen Strukturen und der gefalteten Fassadenabwicklung bildet ein Raumkontinuum, welches sich bis in die oberen Etagen fortsetzt.

Der doppelgeschossige Wohnraum bildet den räumlichen Schwerpunkt der Häuser. Von ihm aus entwickeln sich die weiteren Räume um den Erschliessungskern herum, welcher durch das Cheminée angereichert wird. Beide in den jeweiligen Dachgeschossen angeordneten Masterbereiche, umfassen eine begehbare Garderobe, ein grosszügiges Bad und einen direkten Zugang auf die Dachterrasse. Durch das Rahmenwerk werden die Aussenräume gefasst und die Ausblicke gerahmt, einerseits zum Wald im Westen der Parzelle und im Süden bis bis über den Zürichsee hinaus. Die beiden Häuser unterscheiden sich aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Ausrichtung und Situierung

Programa A missão consistia em substituir as duas habitações unifamiliares existentes por duas habitações unifamiliares ligadas por via de uma área subterrânea de bem-estar. Ambas as casas são alcançados por um passeio através do jardim que liga os dois níveis exteriores. Uma "promenade architecturale" conduz desde a garagem subterrânea partilhada sob clarabóias até cada um dos núcleos de circulação vertical das habitações.

As áreas de entrada em cada um dos pisos térreos unem as vias de acesso interiores e exteriores. A forma poligonal da planta permite uma distribuição espacial diferenciada. Isto significa que as áreas de estar são dispostas em volta dos núcleos de circulação organizados ortogonalmente.

Os espaços entre estas estruturas ortogonais e a progressão flectida da fachada formam um contínuo espacial que se estende até aos pisos superiores. As salas de estar de pédireito duplo formam os principais focos espaciais das habitações. Os outros espaços desenvolvem-se para o exterior a partir destas em torno dos núcleos de circulação, sendo reforçadas pela lareira aberta. As áreas principais dispostas em ambos os níveis da cobertura incluem um quarto de vestir, uma grande casa de banho e acesso direito ao terraço. Os espaços exteriores são definidos no enquadramento, fixando as vistas - a Este do local para a floresta, e a Sul para o lago Zurich. As duas habitações diferem em termos dos alinhamentos contrastantes e das situações dos volumes. Uma outra ligação subterrânea entre os dois volumes atravessa a área de estar.

wellness area is the access to the garden area, giving the space an unexpected expansiveness.

Construction / Materialization Both buildings rise from the shared underground garages and the wellness level. The solid concrete construction beneath ground level gives way to a load-bearing framework of reinforced concrete, which is filled in with wooden elements and windows.

The ash-wood elements contrast with the smooth outer concrete surface. The structure of the facade follows a metabolic approach whereby the wooden and window elements can be replaced as wished with glazing. The majority of the inside walls are executed in white plaster, whilst the vertical circulation core and the fireplaces reveal the exposed concrete. From the outside the individual building shapes appear like boulders, whereas the interiors are dominated by high-quality, refined materials. As a whole the aim was to create a spatial atmosphere characterised by natural materials that radiate comfort and cosiness, but without foregoing a modern, contemporary architectural appearance.

Die Kernzone erstreckt sich parallel zum Schwimmbecken und beinhaltet Garderobe, Bad/WC, Dampfbad, sowohl eine Sauna. Der Erschliessungsbereich rund um das 15 m lange Becken bietet Platz für Liegezonen, Kraft- und Fitnessgeräte. Ein wichtiges Element des unterirdisch platzierten Wellnessbereichs ist der Zugang in den Gartenraum, welcher dem Raum eine unerwartete Grosszügigkeit verleiht.

Konstruktion / Materialisierung Die beiden Gebäude wachsen aus dem gemeinsamen unterirdischen Garagen- und Wellnessgeschoss. Der massiven Betonbau im Untergrund löst sich auf in ein tragendes Rahmenwerk aus Stahlbeton welches mit den Holzelementen und Fenstern ausgefacht wird. Die Eschenholzelemte stehen im Kontrast zu der glatten Betonoberfläche. Mit dieser Fassadenstruktur wurde ein metabolistischer Ansatz verfolgt, die nichttragenden Holz- und Fensterelemente können nach Belieben mit Verglasungen ersetzt werden. Im Innenraum sind die Wände mehrheitlich in Weissputz gehalten, während die vertikalen Erschliessungskerne und die Kaminkörper den Betonrohbau offenlegen. Die einzelnen Gebäudekörper wirken von aussen wie rohe Findlinge, während im Innern eine edle, verfeinerte Materiallieferung herrscht. Insgesamt wird eine von natürlichen Materialien geprägte Raumstimmung angestrebt, die Behaglichkeit und Wohnlichkeit ausstrahlt, ohne auf einen modernen, zeitgemässen architektonischen Ausdruck zu verzichten.

Um elemento importante na área de estar subterrânea é o acesso ao jardim, dando ao espaço uma expansividade inesperada.

Construção/Materialização Ambos os edifícios se elevam desde as garagens subterrâneas e área de estar partilhadas. A sólida construção em betão abaixo do nível do solo dá lugar a uma estrutura de suporte em betão reforçado, que é preenchida com elementos de madeira e janelas. Os elementos em madeira de carvalho contrastam com a suave superfície exterior em betão. A estrutura da fachada segue uma abordagem metabólica através da qual os elementos em madeira e das janelas podem ser substituídos, como desejado, por envidraçados. A maioria das paredes interiores são executadas em reboco branco, enquanto que o núcleo de circulação vertical e as lareiras revelam o betão à vista. A partir do exterior, as formas individuais dos edifícios surgem como rochedos, enquanto que os interiores são dominados por materiais refinados de elevada qualidade.

O objectivo, como um todo, era criar uma atmosfera espacial caraterizada por materiais naturais que irradiassem conforto e aconchego, sem prescindir de uma expressão arquitectónica moderna e contemporânea.
