As the statewide eviction moratorium ends, thousands of Rochester residents are expected to be without a home in the coming months. Rochester City Court eviction and foreclosure hearings are climbing with more added to the docket every day. The aftermath of this moratorium is greater than you think with long-term effects spreading across our community. Studies show that evicted families face a variety of health problems including higher infant mortality rates, high blood pressure, drug overdoses, and suicide. Rochesterians with eviction records and back rent are struggling to get rental application approval. And now, affordable, safe housing is nearly impossible to find with the influx of renters being added to today’s competitive residential market. Many are moving into crowded households, finding refuge at homeless shelters or turning to unfavorable low-income housing. Families, including children of all ages, will be displaced from their homes just as their school year is getting underway.

Although relief is still available in Monroe County, evictions continue while applications are pending.

How do these evictions affect The Salvation Army in Rochester?

Fall Volunteer Opportunities and How You Can Help

The Salvation Army has been preparing for the eviction moratorium all summer long. We’ve increased volunteer support, stocked nonperishable foods, revised our donation center production, and made resources available to those who find themselves in a challenging situation.

Summer Camp Wrap-Up

Through our emergency and long-term homeless shelters we’re providing beds, food, basic hy-

giene resources, and spiritual/physical care to those in need. We’re combating long-term homelessness through our four shelters here in Monroe County with more than 70 beds designated for men, women and children, youth and veterans. Our continuing efforts help the homeless and newly evicted population return to a stable living environment; whether becoming employed and living on their own or returning to their families.

How can I help those facing eviction or homelessness? 1. Donate your time Our homeless shelters around the country are always looking for the smiling faces of volunteers to brighten up our residents’ lives. Email ras.volunteer@use.salvationarmy.org to let us know that you can be of service. 2. Donate money Undoubtedly, there’s someone in your community who needs help getting a roof over their head. A one-time or monthly donation to The Salvation Army can help your neighbors most in need, all year long. To pledge an amount of any size, visit easternusa.salvationarmy.org/empire/rochester/ 3. Donate food and goods Rochester’s local homeless shelters are in need of basic supplies like food, winter hats, gloves and warm socks. Contact us at 585-987-9500 to find out what they need most during this eviction plight. Each year, thanks to generous donations, The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester provides over 30,000 nights of lodging to those in the most need who come from a variety of backgrounds. People who come to us for assistance will be served according to their need and our capacity to help - regardless of race, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
