The mission of Lamplighters Music Theatre is to be the premier producer of the art of Gilbert & Sullivan, as well as other compositions of comparable wit, eloquence, and musicality.

Critically acclaimed artistic successes for the Lamplighters include honors for Best Production and Best Director at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England, and local awards in nearly every performance, direction, and design category.

MUSIC DIREC TOR’S NOTES A very warm welcome to Lamplighters’ Sesquicentennial Soiree of Scenes, celebrating not just 150 years of Gilbert & Sullivan but also the 70th anniversary year of Lamplighters’ own auspicious involvement in the Savoy Operas.

I feel honoured to have been asked to conduct this afternoon’s event and together with my colleague Nicolas Aliaga Garcia, we have selected a feast of music from all fourteen of the operettas crafted by the illustrious duo. You will hear sumptuous ensembles both from their classic era and from lesser-known works, mixed with a whole gamut from their theatrical output: yes, arias, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, madrigals, and a host of weddings, not to mention one of Sullivan’s best ever overtures performed by the Lamplighters’ Orchestra. In addition, we decided to present the excerpts of these two masters, [one a keen observer of social satire, the other a melodic genius] in mostly chronological order, so that you can follow their artistic progress from Thespis in 1871, when the lamp was first lit, through a quarter of a century, to their last collaboration — The Grand Duke in 1896.

One of the highlights of this event for me, and surely for all fans of Lamplighters Music Theatre, is the rare opportunity to witness so many of the company’s favorite principals all on the stage at once! For this special occasion they have all agreed to come together and take on all the parts of all the shows – yes all, including the ensemble parts! So, this will be G&S like you have never heard it before.

One final joy to share: the concept of this afternoon’s performance has evolved exponentially since it was presented to us in early January! Originally conceived as a concert, in which the singers would stand and read from scores, we quickly realized that the first and last operas featured the commonality of a Greek troupe of actor/singers (very much like Lamplighters themselves) arriving on location to perform their roles (in the first case on Greece’s Mount Olympus and in the latter, in the Greek play Troilus & Cressida.)

This seeded the germ of a plot, and a wealth of ideas linking numbers one to another followed. “Perhaps we could actually stage it?” – There was scarcely enough time, but we realized that many of the excerpts could still be effective, even with singers holding books – and we are immensely grateful to all our principals for their sterling efforts to commit so much of this wonderful music to memory in such a short time. Meanwhile it was thrilling to witness the whole team galvanise itself into overdrive to suddenly and miraculously provide sets, props, lights, costumes and wigs, paving the way for today’s unexpectedly staged adventure in Gilbert & Sullivan Land.

And let us not forget the reason for this show as we celebrate one hundred fifty years of G & S. — David Drummond, Music Director

MEET THE L A MPLIGHTER S NICOLAS ALIAGA GARCIA (‘98) Stage Director.

Nicolas moved to the Bay Area eighteen years ago to begin his operatic career after graduating from Tufts University.

Since then, he has performed roles with many companies including Opera San Jose, Pocket Opera, Festival Opera, Berkeley Opera, Oakland Lyric Opera, Oakland Opera Theater, Boston Publick Theater, The Jarvis Conservatory, Lamplighters, TheatreWorks, Golden Gate Opera, and San Francisco Lyric Opera. He began his directing career with one-act operas for Pocket Opera, where he now serves as Artistic Director.

ALÉXA ANDERSON (‘10) Soprano. Aléxa has soloed with the San Francisco Symphony, and has performed lead roles with companies such as West Edge Opera, Lamplighters Music Theatre, Pocket Opera, West Bay Opera, Opera Cultura, and the San Francisco Opera Guild. She has also been featured at the national OPERA America Conference both as a soloist and as a panel speaker for the African, Latinx, Asian, Arab and/or Native American (ALAANA) network. In her teaching life, Aléxa focuses on performance-based education geared towards at-risk, incarcerated, and underprivileged youth.

She has four music-loving cats.

JENNIFER ASHWORTH (‘01) Soprano. Jennifer sings opera and operetta with local companies such as Berkeley Opera, Festival Opera, Lyric Theatre; and is a member of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Chorale, American Bach Soloists and Cappella SF. She has been a teaching artist for the SF Opera Guild since 2003 and is co-creator of the Guild’s program for grades K-3, Sing A Story. Jennifer is the

co-founder of Presto! Interactive Opera, and is also the founder and director of the MAD Band at the School of the Madeleine, Berkeley.

STACEY BAUER (‘09) Viola.

Stacey has been performing with the Lamplighters since three Mikados ago. She enjoys the creativity and diversity each new cast and band brings to the stage. A native of California, Stacey has played with orchestras throughout the state and works diligently to bring up the next wave of musicians through teaching and coaching young musicians.

MICHAEL BELLE (‘11) Tenor. Michael performed Norfolk in Elisabetta (West Edge Opera), Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore (Lamplighters), Hoffmann in Les contes d’Hoffmann (San Francisco Parlor Opera), Nemorino in L’Elisir d’amore (Pocket Opera), Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus (Longwood Opera, Opera del West), solos in Porgy and Bess (Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera), Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni (Center Stage Opera), and Andy in Treemonisha (Opera Providence).

In spring 2009 he debuted in the chorus of San Francisco Opera.

DON BENHAM (‘07) Trombone. Don studied trombone with Miles Anderson and Robert Marsteller, and studied harmony and composition with Hollywood composer Hugo Friedhofer. Principal trombone with the California Symphony since 1987, Don has held positions with the Oakland Symphony, Santa Fe Opera, San Francisco Ballet, and Hong Kong Philharmonic. His hobbies include classic cars, film music, and marathon running.

MARIA LUCIA CAYCEDO (‘19) Soprano. Colombian Soprano Maria has sung with Island City Opera, Opera Birmingham, Phenix Opera, Verismo Opera, Opera Cultura, Lyric Theatre of San Jose, and West Bay Opera.

Maria’s roles include Bernice (L’Occasione fa il Ladro), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Lucy (The Telephone), Musetta (La Bohème), Frasquita (Carmen), and Belinda (Dido & Aeneas).

LESLIE CHIN (‘02) Flute, Piccolo.

Leslie plays in the orchestra.

KATHLEEN CONNER (‘73) Oboe. Kathy has performed all of the G&S shows in her 40+ happy years of playing for the Lamplighters. She also performs regularly with the SF Chamber Orchestra, the SF Opera Merola program, and other Bay Area groups. A personal goal is to play oboe on all of the recordings in the Lamplighters recording project.

CHRISTY CREWS (Debut) Contrabass.

This is Christy’s debut performance with Lamplighters.”

GWYNETH DAVIS (‘88) Cello. Gwyneth has played with most of the regional orchestras and opera companies in the Bay Area, and, as a member of the Eloquence String Quartet, provided music for hundreds of weddings in the Napa and Sonoma valleys. She lives in Sebastopol with her partner and Labradoodle. A former pastry chef, she now enjoys performing on viola da gamba and baroque cello with her early music group, the Alphabet Baroque Club.

DAVID DRUMMOND (‘18) Music Director, Conductor.

David has conducted opera for ENO (including the Jonathan Miller Mikado), Scottish Opera, Gothenburg Opera, and as far afield as Kharkov Opera in the Ukraine.

He was Director of Music & Opera at University College, London, Director of the London Oriana Choir, and a professor on the vocal coaching staff of the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music. His choral arrangements have been commissioned by songwriters such as Beth Nielsen Chapman and rock legend Robert Plant. Orchestras he has conducted include the London Mozart Players, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Kharkov Philharmonic, and several recordings with the BBC Concert Orchestra. In 2013 his family moved to California for two years but decided to stay. The Pirates of Penzance with the Edinburgh Gilbert & Sullivan Society was his first ever, professional engagement — a very long time ago!

NANCY EWING (‘77) Viola.

Nancy started as a violist in 1977 and left in 1989 only to return as librarian and viola sub in 2017. A graduate of SFCM and a lover of the Bay Area, Nancy raised a family in Grass Valley and played up and down all the valley orchestras. She is thrilled to be back as part of the Lamplighters family.

AMY DUXBURY (‘19) Bassoon. Amy has called the Bay Area home for over 20 years. Amy received her Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, and currently freelances throughout the Bay Area, from Marin to Santa Cruz. By day she is the Regional Office Administrator at the patent law firm Finnegan.

PAMELA FAW (‘91) Violin, Concertmaster. Pamela is Director of Music at St. Hilary Parish, where she also teaches music in their elementary school. She is on the faculty at Dominican University. Pamela is a freelance violinist performing throughout the Bay Area. She has several dogs and two cats named Gilbert and Sullivan.

F. LAWRENCE EWING (‘89) Bass-Baritone. Celebrating over 30 years with Lamplighters, Lawrence is grateful to have had the opportunity to play many roles with the Company. His roster of G&S “friends” includes The Learned Judge, Duke of Plaza Toro, Jack Point, Bunthorne, Koko/Coco, Lord Chancellor, Sir Joseph Porter, Major General Stanley, and Robin Oakapple.

AMY FOOTE (‘10) Soprano.

Amy sings an expansive repertoire ranging from leading roles on the operatic stage to world premieres of contemporary music. Her voice is described as “sinuous [and] bright-toned…[with] an alluringly silvery sheen” (San Francisco Chronicle). She performed music by two Pulitzer Prize-nominated composers with SF Contemporary Music Players and on the SF Symphony’s SoundBox series. She premiered the role of Lydia in Kirke Mechem’s new opera Pride and Prejudice.

JOSEPHA FATH (‘90) Violin.

Josepha is so happy (modified rapture!) to have been a violinist with the Lamplighters since the 1990s. She currently performs with the California Symphony, SF Opera’s Merola, and can be seen and heard in many other symphony orchestras in and around the Bay Area. Josepha teaches at both the SF Community Music Center, and the French American International School.

She is an avid chamber music player, with both the Fath Chamber Players, and the Liberty Street Trio.

BRUCE FOSTER (‘19) Clarinet. From 2010-2016 Bruce lived in Beijing, China, where he was Principal Clarinet for the China National Center for the Performing Arts. In 2012 he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic in a co-operation concert with the NCPA under the direction of Maestro Lorin Maazel performing Maazel’s transcription of music from Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

SONIA GARIAEFF (‘03) Mezzo-Soprano. Sonia made her Lamplighters debut in the title role of Iolanthe in 2003. Since then, she has performed roles such as Katisha (The Mikado), Ruth (The Pirates of Penzance), and Lady Jane (Patience). A three-time Metropolitan Opera National Council regional finalist, Sonia completed the Portland Opera’s apprentice artist program, and was a fellow with Carmel Bach Festival. Roles include Juno (Semele), La Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica), and The Marquise (The Daughter of the Regiment).

NICOLA GRUEN (‘16) Violin. Nicola performed for several years in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Halle Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony, and English National Ballet. Nicola graduated from UC Berkeley and the Royal Academy of Music. She currently performs with several Bay Area orchestras and works at UC Office of the President.

PATRICK HAGEN (‘16) Tenor. Patrick is a lyric tenor originally from Northern New Jersey. He received a Bachelor’s from Penn State, and a Master’s from the SF Conservatory. Patrick has been seen in a multitude of operatic productions, including Menotti’s The Consul (The Magician) Puccini’s La Bohème (Rodolfo) and Tosca (Spoletta), Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (Don Basilio), Copland’s The Tender Land (Martin), Britten’s Albert Herring (Albert), and Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Tebaldo).

MARY HARGROVE (‘90) Flute, Piccolo. Mary is principal flute with Nederlander Broadway productions in San Jose as well as the Masterworks and Stanford Chorales.

She plays flute and piccolo for Opera San José, Ballet San Jose, and the San Francisco Opera Merola program.

KATHRYN JUNEAU (‘87) Viola. Katy received her BM from the SFCM. She is Principal Viola of Lamplighters Orchestra, Fremont Symphony, West Edge Opera Festival, acting Asst. Principal for California Symphony, and plays with the FSQ String Quartet. Katy is thrilled that the family tradition of G&S continues as her son and daughter regularly join the Lamplighters chorus.

DAVID KIRBY (‘98) Makeup Designer.

David has been a Lamplighter for over 20 years, and has done makeup for nearly every show during that time. As a former performer, he filled his G&S bingo card years ago. During the day, he sells whoopee cushions.

CHASE KUPPERBERG (‘19) Stage Manager. Chase is very excited to be a part of this production. This is his fifth show with Lamplighters and he’s thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to work with this wonderful company. He’d like to thank his family and friends for their continued support.

CHRIS LEWIS (‘17) Bass-Baritone. Chris is the founding and current musical director of the Fog City Singers, a barbershoporiented men’s chorus in San Francisco. He has performed with a variety of organizations including choral ensembles (Stanford Chamber Chorale, Volti, Convivium, Clerestory), barbershop groups (Brannigan, Voices in Harmony, Elephants Gerald), contemporary a cappella groups (Stanford Mixed Company, Beyond Zebra), and theater companies (Broadway by the Bay, Lamplighters). He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Computer Science from Stanford University and works by day as a software engineer.

CHARLES MARTIN (‘97) Bass-Baritone. Charles first appeared with the Lamplighters as Pish-Tush in our 1997 Mikado, and has since performed many bass-baritone roles with the company including Private Willis, Arac, Senator Jones, Horseman War, Sir Despard Murgatroyd, Dick Deadeye, the Mikado, the Sergeant of Police, Jigger Craigin, the Pirate King, and the Usher. Charles studies voice with Baker Peeples, moonlights as a software engineer, and enjoys the romance of travel and the occasional extreme athletic event.

BRITTANY MELLERSON (‘15) Lighting Designer, Cultural Consultant.

Brittany is an East coast native and a graduate of Point Park University’s Conservatory Program, with a BFA in Theatrical Lighting & Sound design. Recent credits include lighting design for the revival of Roger Grunwald’s The Obligation, the 2018 PlayGround Festival of New Works, The Gondoliers and Pirates of Penzance with Lamplighters, Graveyard Shift with SF Playhouse’s Sandbox Series, the 45th Annual Telluride Film Festival, and Seen/By Everyone with Theatre of Yugen.

ARI MICICH (Debut) Cornet. Ari plays the trumpet.

WILLIAM NEELY (‘78) Bass-Baritone. Bill has sung most of the baritone roles in the G&S repertoire, as well as Falke (Die Fledermaus), Danilo (Merry Widow), and Carl-Magnus (A Little Night Music). He has also performed with many groups around the Bay Area in such roles as Sweeney Todd, Man of La Mancha, Don Giovanni, Voltaire/Pangloss, Scarpia, Count Almaviva, Sharpless, Escamillo, Ford, and Malatesta. Bill teaches his online music appreciation course, Adventures in Classical Music, at musicappreciationonline.com.

LYNN OAKLEY (‘80) Violin.

Lynn performs with Villa String Quartet, Villa Sinfonia and Villa Chamber Orchestra, and Marin Oratorio, as well as other groups. Lynn teaches violin and viola and she has written two biographies and an Arcadia neighborhood book about San Francisco’s Twin Peaks. She had her first introduction to G&S in the third grade in Heidelberg, Germany. Her dad was stationed there and the high school students put on HMS Pinafore for the younger students. Lynn was hooked from that point on.

NORMAN PECK (‘77) Percussion. Norman currently holds the Principal Percussion Chair with the Santa Cruz Symphony and West Bay Opera. He plays jazz with a big band every Monday night when he isn’t working, teaches a large class of private students, and provides instrumental contracting services to a variety of clients.

In addition, Norman is passionately fond of science fiction, cooking and his cat Alex. In January 2022, he and his wife Lynda celebrated their 40th anniversary.

BAKER S. PEEPLES (‘04) Violin. “Little” Baker was wed in babyhood to the shows of G&S, with no surprise or indignation regarding his fate. While some Lamplighters offspring have graced the stage, he fell into the pit. Baker regularly performs with Symphony San Jose, the Oakland Symphony, and the Sacramento Philharmonic. He teaches at Reeder Music Academy. Go, Giants!

DEBORAH MARTÍNEZ ROSENGAUS (‘14) Mezzo-Soprano. Deborah has performed in Tokyo’s Santori Hall, Disney Hall, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. Last November she was a featured soloist at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Deborah has given recitals in Mexico, Europe, and across the U.S. and is a member of chamber ensemble Camerata Sospiro. She performs with many local Opera companies and holds a BM from USC and an MM from the Manhattan School of Music.

CARY ANN ROSKO (‘06) Mezzo-Soprano.

A versatile, sincere, and powerful performer, Cary enjoys a career that spans multiple theatre genres. Known for her “lush contralto,” she has performed many G&S roles with Lamplighters, including the Duchess of Plaza Toro, Katisha, the Fairy Queen, Lady Angela, and Iolanthe. Cary has also performed musical theatre roles like Old Woman (Candide), Donna/Oolie (City of Angels), Ilona Ritter (She Loves Me), Julie (Show Boat), and Cleo (Most Happy Fella).

LUCY SCHOENING (‘74) Flute. Lucy was principal flute for the Artea Chamber Orchestra and performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Pocket Opera, San Francisco Chamber Players, Oakland Opera and many chamber music groups. She teaches fifth grade and is the mother of two sons.

MICHELE SCHROEDER (‘09) Mezzo-Soprano.

Michele was last seen with Lamplighters in her favorite G&S role, Phoebe Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard. Other performances with Lamplighters include Lady Saphir (Patience), Pizzi (The [new] Mikado), Lisa (The Grand Duke), the title role in Iolanthe, Edith (The Pirates of Penzance), Melissa (Princess Ida), Cousin Hebe (HMS Pinafore), and Paquette (Candide). Michele received her Bachelor of Music at San Francisco State University (2010), where she performed the role of Dorabella (Così fan tutte). In 2012 Michele attended BASOTI, where she performed La Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica), and opera scenes as Dame Quickly (Falstaff), Angelina (La Cenerentola), and Carmen (Carmen).

FRANCES SILCOX (‘16) Properties Manager. Easily pulled in to a witty story, what an “inestimable treasure” it is for France to take part in G&S stories accompanied by Lamplighters’ voices. France comes to the Company carrying a love of objects and stories across the bridge from the museum world to Lamplighters. She holds an M.A. in Museum Studies from The George Washington University and a B.A. from her favorite city’s University of San Francisco.

JAMAEL SMITH (‘21) Bassoon. Jamael plays the bassoon.

JONATHAN SPENCER (‘90) Production Manager.

Jonathan is Managing Director for The Bracebridge Dinners at Yosemite. Onstage he most recently appeared as Robert Sideshow in last fall’s Hitchcock-inspired Gala, “Throw Gama From the Train!”

Favorite roles have included the Major General (Pirates), Capt. Corcoran (Pinafore), Pooh-Bah (Mikado), the Learned Judge (Trial by Jury), Mr. Lindquist (A Little Night Music), The Playwright (Enter the Guardsman), and numerous Galas. A Shellie and Arty award nominee, he is also a former Jeopardy! champion.

CARL STANLEY (‘73) Contrabass. Carl performs professionally with orchestras and theater groups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He first played bass with the Lamplighters Orchestra in the mid 1970s and served as Orchestra Personnel Manager and Education Coordinator for the Oakland Symphony from 1996 to 2015.

He was an instrumental music teacher in the Berkeley Unified School District for many years.

GREGORY SYKES (‘93) Violin. Gregory has been studying violin and making music in the SF Bay Area since elementary school. He holds a B.M. from UC Berkeley and has studied privately with Mariko Smiley, Charles Meacham and Elizabeth Gibson.

Gregory has performed with the Berkeley, Napa, Oakland East Bay, Santa Rosa and Vallejo Symphonies and has played in the pit accompanying musical theater productions for numerous dramatic troupes, most especially the Lamplighters!

ALICIA TELFORD (‘18) Horn. Alicia is an alumna of SFCM and SF State, where she studied Horn with David Krehbiel, former Principal Horn of the San Francisco Symphony and Bill Klingelhoffer, former Co-Principal of the San Francisco Opera. She is a wellknown freelance artist and teacher in the Bay Area, a tenured member of the Oakland East Bay Symphony and SF Chamber Orchestra.

CARMELLO TRINGALI (‘12) Tenor. Carmello is excited to be returning to the Lamplighters stage. He has performed a number of roles across the G&S spectrum including: Frederic, Grosvenor, Ko-Ko, Fitzbattleaxe, Grand Duke and Ralph. Other favorite roles include: Rodolfo, Faust, Lensky, Pinkerton, Candide, Henrik, Don Ottavio, Basilio, and Signor Pirelli. He is also a guitarist and composer.

MICHAEL WIRGLER (‘79) Clarinet. Michael is retired from Oakland Public Schools, where he taught music for more than 30 years. He has recently retired conducting the Golden Gate Park Band, and continues conducting the Alameda Community Band. He joined the Lamplighters Orchestra as clarinetist in 1979, which has been an important part of his life since.

REBECCA WISHNIA (‘19) Violin. Rebecca has performed with the Berkeley, Napa, Vallejo and Merced Symphonies; Pocket Opera, and many more. She is also the violin instructor at Las Positas College in addition to teaching at the Crowden School and Villa Sinfonia. In 2017, her teaching was featured by SFGovTv.
