Exercise concludes, partnership endures Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs OTOPENI AIR BASE, Romania — U.S. and Romanian military members concluded a two-week bilateral training exercise on Otopeni Air Base, Romania, Aug. 31. Carpathian Fall 2017 involved participation from more than 100 Airmen from Ramstein along with paratroopers from the U.S. Army and Romania military. The exercise also saw participation from Romanian Air

Force pilots who served as observers. The goal of Carpathian Fall 2017 was to enhance mission readiness and interoperability between the U.S. and Romanian military. An example of the partnership displayed during the exercise was the airlift of Romanian paratroopers on a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. Romanian Air Force aircraft also airdropped cargo delivery systems which were built by U.S. Air Force aerial delivery Airmen. “Every exercise provides its own challenges,” said See PARTNERSHIP, Page 2

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — On Aug. 29, 1944, the Slovak army and resistance began an uprising against the pro-Nazi Slovak government of the time and the German occupation of their country. They were successful in liberating their homeland and held annual celebrations to commemorate the event. For the 73rd anniversary, the U.S. Air Forces in Europe jazz band, The Ambassadors, were invited to play two concerts for the occasion. “It’s actually a series we’ve been doing for a number of years now, and we’re very happy to support it year after

year,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. John Dawson, noncommissioned officer in charge of USAFE jazz band. “This is the first time in a while the jazz band has done it. It was really interesting to be sharing the stage with a couple Russian folk ensembles and different Slovak groups that were there.” Causing toe-tapping, head bobs, and dancing, the jazz band performed at the Museum of Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, on Aug. 29 and in the nation’s capital, Bratislava, on Aug. 30. “We have a very good relationship with the U.S. Embassy and they offered to us the U.S. Air Force band,” said Boris Vigaš, Museum of Slovak National Uprising director of

Capt. Jacob Morton, 37th Airlift Squadron mission planning cell chief. “Some challenges can be anticipated but sometimes the things you least expect can be the things which challenge you the most. The benefit of those challenges is that we find these things out now, rather than during combat.” Morton served as the mission commander for Carpathian Fall 2017. He emphasized the importance of bilateral training, saying no country should take on a mission alone. “Ever since the dawn of warfare, alliances have been crucial to victory,” Morton said. “This principle still applies today. We succeed in mis-

sions not only through the courage of our own warfighters, but also through our bonds with our allies. We fly, fight, and win together.” Participants from Ramstein came from a wide range of Air Force career fields, including aircrew, weather, logistics, operations support, weather, and intelligence. Besides conducting airdrops, pilots also practiced various in-flight maneuvers in the skies above Romania. 37th AS C-130J Super Hercules pilots conducted evasive flight maneuvers, tactical low-level flying, flare dispenses, and assault landings. These flights were conducted with Romanian Air Force pilots observing in the cockpit. Maj. Corey Preston, 37th AS C-130J instructor pilot, said he was

happy with how the exercise went, and expressed his pride in the participants. “Carpathian Fall 2017 was an amazing success due to hard work and dedication of all Airmen involved,” Preston said. “We had amazing support from numerous agencies from the 86th Airlift Wing and every Airman that was deployed in support of Carpathian Fall played an integral part in the success of the deployment, so first and foremost I’d like to congratulate and thank the team.” Preston also expressed his gratitude for the Romanian troops who hosted the Airmen from Ramstein, adding that the Romanians contributed greatly to Carpathian Fall 2017. “We also had outstanding support

from our Romanian counterparts, and fostered key relationships that are essential to building partnership capacity and interoperability between our two air forces,” he added. As the U.S. troops packed up and prepared to return to Ramstein, Morton added that there was one more challenge to face. He said this challenge comes up at the end of every bilateral exercise: saying goodbye. “We had an awesome time here in Romania,” he said. “The Romanians were wonderful hosts, and we will truly miss the people and the country when we leave. All of us will have stories to tell our folks when we get back home. We hope to come back again soon and continue building our alliance with the people of Romania.”

Army, Air Force band together for Airman’s best friend by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs They step from the car, wagging their faithful tails as they trot next to their partners. Children squeal with delight as they see them, but Airmen know that as fluffy as they are, military working dogs are not a household pet. America’s cutest heroes, MWDs are revered for the abilities they use to ensure the safety of those they fight for. Due to the nature of their work, these K-9s are prone to dental injuries and depend on local dental clinics to help keep them in good working condition. After biting down onto a steel pipe during training, Kobo, 86th Security Forces Squadron MWD, recently underwent two non-surgical procedures for the extraction of his upper incisors and a surgical extraction of his upper fourth premolar at Veterinary Medical Center Europe, Pulaski Barracks, Aug. 25. Soldiers from Veterinary Medical Center Europe partnered with Airmen from the 86th Dental Squadron to extract Kobo’s broken tooth, rather than use the self-developing films they had. “When it comes time to do complicated tooth extractions or root canals, standard of care is to have access to radiography,” said U.S. Army Capt. Kelsey Fiddes, Veterinary

Medical Center Europe outpatient services chief at Public Health Activity-RheinlandPfalz. “The 86th Dental Squadron lent us digital radiography that is much faster and helps us to minimize the amount of time the dogs spend under anesthesia.” Using Ramstein Dental Clinic’s digital radiograph sensor and computer software with Veterinary Medical Center Europe’s portable x-ray unit, both units were able to take digital radiographs of Kobo’s teeth faster and easier than the self-developing radiograph films. The dentists are also much more familiar with and have access to specialized dental equipment and knowledge of more intricate procedures than veterinarians do. “Veterinarians commonly deal with a small amount of every medical specialty: dentistry, surgery, internal medicine, oncology, radiology, pharmacy, etc.,” Fiddes said, “So it’s great to be able to work with these Airmen that have specialized in one of those areas and can offer detailed tips and insight on how to complete the procedures more efficiently and effectively.” Military working dogs are the reason Fiddes comes to work every day and believes the K-9s deserve the best care. “People always underestimate our working dogs, and never give them enough credit for the work they do and the

lives they save,” Fiddes said. “It is the highlight of my job to see them work, train, and succeed in everything they do. With the amount of work they do for us, the least we can do is provide them with the best medical care we are able.” The equipment made it possible to evaluate for any signs of infection, abscess, or inflammation that may be present in a safer and more efficient way, making it easier to determine if Kobo’s teeth needed to come out. “It’s always great when we can use our resources to help each other out,” said Capt. Christianna Moore, 86th DS general dentist. “We want to make sure MWDs are as healthy and well-maintained as possible, and letting that tooth sit in Kobo’s gums would’ve led to an infection.” Having that strong working relationship with one another allowed both the 86th DS and Veterinary Medical Center Europe to collaborate on a more complex dental procedure, leaving Kobo ready and fit to fight, as well as ensuring that relationship will only continue to grow stronger.

Back to school: Making it the best year for students Story and photo by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The start of the school year can be an exciting adventure for many students, but it can also be a time of high stress when they meet new people and reorganize their daily schedules. While families are preparing to start the school year, parents can help their children successfully transition into the venture by actively participating with the school and their children. “Being involved in their child’s school and having open communication with teachers is the best way parents can support their child,” said Mary Salerno, Ramstein Intermediate School principal. “It allows the parents to know what is going on in the student’s life and have a more direct influence.” Communication between parents and teachers helps alleviate any concerns parents may have about their children’s grades, attitudes, work ethics, and daily habits. Parents who communicate closely with their child’s teacher will know how they can support their child in the best ways. According to Noreen Mantini, RIS 4th grade counselor, when students see

teachers and parents working closely together they tend to be more dedicated to their time at school. Mantini also mentioned that communication between parents and their children is just as critical as talking to the teachers. “When families are at home it’s important they slow down and make time for each other and have conversations,” said Mantini. “Parents may ask how the school day went and accept the first answer their child gives them. It’s necessary to have a deeper conversation and get to know how school is going.” Salerno explained that aside from communication, ensuring children are living a healthy lifestyle such as a proper sleep schedule during the school year can help improve focus during the school day. Even though being active within the school, communication with students and teacher, and healthy lifestyles are essential, Mantini believes that parents’ attitude toward school is the most influential for students. “The very best thing, I think, is to be enthusiastic about school as a parent,” said Mantini. “Celebrate school and make rituals that you do every year as a family before and after the school year, and celebrate the successes of your student.”

Ramstein retires C-20H Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs It didn’t fly off into the sunset, and there weren’t any tears, but it was still a movie moment on Ramstein, Aug. 28. Airmen in attendance witnessed the last of the 76th Airlift Squadron’s C-20H Gulfstream IV’s depart Ramstein. “Thanks for coming out to help us send off our last C-20H, tail 0300,” said Lt. Col. Derek Gallagher, 76th AS commander. “I look forward to joining all of you in offering one final salute as our crew taxis it out and departs from Ramstein for the last time.” Gallagher went on to discuss the aircraft’s history saying, “On May 23rd, 1994, the C-20H, tail number 0300 entered service for the Air Force when Lt. Gen. Malcom B. Armstrong, the commander of the 21st Air Force, delivered it to the 89th Airlift Wing at Andrews Air Force Base.” It wouldn’t stay there however. The European theater needed those assets, so in 2002, the Air Force Chief of Staff approved the transferring of two C-20H aircraft to the 86th AW. “In Oct. 2008, U.S. Africa Command stood up and drove increased demand for (distinguished visitor) airlift services,” Gallagher said. “The C-20H was a natural fit for the mission set and executed operations on a regular basis to the continent of Africa while simultaneously providing DV airlift to Europe, and deploying to Afghanistan in support of the commanders of the International Security Assistance Force and Operation Resolute Support.” Gallagher expressed his thanks and admiration to the Airmen who operated and maintained the airframe. “Because of the hard work and dedication of both our line fliers and maintainers, you were able to successfully accomplish our airlift mission with incredible effectiveness,” he said. “… It’s all of you who enable impeccable airlift support to U.S. and foreign dignitaries, multiple combatant commanders, members of congress, and even the vice president of the United States, enabling strategic engagements to nearly every continent on the globe.” Airmen flew tail 0300 for more than 13,000 hours across more than 4,000 missions in its work cycle here before giving it its long deserved rest. Unfortunately, duty calls and tail 0300 will soar again for its new mission, working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As the plane taxied off to depart Germany one final time, the crowd of Airmen rendered a salute to bid their bird a fitting goodbye.

We want to have something for everyone because there are generations of people.” The jazz band serves to increase cultural ties and enhance the people-topeople relationships between the U.S. and Slovakia. “Music bridges cultures in a way that nothing else can,” Dawson said. “Especially in Slovakia where we had a definite language barrier that was immediately broken down once we started playing music. The difference in the disposition of the people from the beginning of the show to the middle to the end was remarkable. You could see it on their faces. At the end they want to come up to us and take photos and give their adulation, and they find a way to do it through the language barrier.” The band played jazz music from the 40s and 50s era, and was received with enjoyment by the audience. “You don’t need to speak English; you can understand jazz and music,” Vigaš said. “It’s a universal language and element that connects cultures. It’s great to see people react to the music. It doesn’t matter if it’s a folk group from Russia or a jazz band from the U.S., there were children dancing. It’s fun to listen to music and it’s great.” Being a part of the annual celebration was a rewarding experience for many of the band members. “The music itself is an exciting thing, and being able to feel the response the audience has is really the most special

Kaiserslautern American thing about going and visiting places like this,” Dawson said. “When we were there for the celebration, it was very humbling to be a part of their one for such a dignified day for them in their culture. For them to invite us to be a part of that, it’s just humbling and an honor to be a part of their tradition.” “Having the ambassador come up and speak to the audience in the Slovak language I think had a direct connection with them immediately,” he continued.

“It created a sense of commonality and trust with the nation’s people and it’s going to be something we continue to build on for many years.” The U.S. provided supplies and support to Slovakia during their uprising, and aided them in pushing out the German occupation. “I want to advise all people from the U.S. to visit the Museum of Slovak National Uprising, because it’s also a part of their history,” Vigaš said. “There

We are very proud that’s a part of history that connects Slovak and American people.” Looking back into history, people can learn and grow based off the actions of those who came before them. The U.S. and Slovakia continue to strengthen their relationship, and the USAFE jazz band has a unique opportunity to bring the two cultures together through the power of music.

Sembach Kaserne celebrates women’s equality, right to vote by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate Less than 100 years ago, women didn’t have the right to vote in America — doing something as easy as casting a ballot for a candidate was forbidden. It wasn’t until the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified Aug. 26, 1920, that led American women along the path to equality — and that journey still continues. The U.S. Army NATO Brigade sponsored a Women’s Equality Day event at the Tiger Theater here, Aug. 28, to bring awareness to women equality issues and celebrate the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Guest speaker, Installation Manage ment Command Chief of Staff Kari Otto, explained how the suffragist movement was effective because the women and men who came together served as a catalyst for change. “Today, you can see the results of that movement in every part of our society, as women sit on our nation’s highest court, run for our highest political office and serve as leaders in our boardrooms, schools, communi ties, government and armed forces,” Otto said. Women’s Equality Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the con tributions women make every day, especially in today’s workforce, including service at every level of the Department of Defense. In recent years, women in the Army have made great strides in chipping away at what some may call a glass ceiling, she said. “Many years ago, I was an Army ROTC cadet, and I wanted to go to Ranger school. I vividly remember my frustration when I was told this was not an option. I demanded to know why — imagine my shock, when the response was — because you’re female,” Otto said. “I was incensed, because it was the first time

I had been told ‘no’ to something because of my gender.” Fast forward a generation to a land scape that changed tremendously — where the Army recognized the achievements of Lt. Shaye Haver, Capt. Kristen Griest, and Maj. Lisa Jaster, the first women to graduate from Army Ranger School in 2015. Ranger school can be a brutally demanding environment, she explained, and their success was notable for anyone, male or female. But for her, this was tanta mount to shattering the glass ceiling. When asked who inspired her, Otto named women who were closer to home — strong women thriving in positions at IMCOMEurope instal lations — among them, she named

Deborah Reynolds, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland Pfalz deputy to the commander, and 1st Sgt. Japonica Armstrong, acting USAG RP com mand sergeant major. “What a privilege to serve with this great team,” said Otto, a for mer activeduty garrison commander. “Thanks to these incredible leaders and others like them, the gender bar rier is dissolving — the ceiling is shat tering.” For Staff Sgt. Tyesha Cox, NCO in charge of personnel operations divi sion with USA NATO, it’s important to recognize the history and people who paved the way for the equality women share today. “It was a challenge that took decades to accomplish,” said Cox, a 12year Army veteran. “Women back then had a lot of courage and took risks in something they believed in, and eventually, the 19th Amendment became a reality.” Once the glass ceiling began to crack, there was no going back. Trailblazers like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth and Alice Paul began breaking the social norms of their day and mak ing ideals of equality into reality. “One thing I learned at today’s event was the first woman to run for president wasn’t Hillary Clinton in 2016; it was Victoria Woodhull, who

ran for president in 1872 — more than 100 years prior,” said Cox, who will be promoted to sergeant first class Sept. 1. “That was pretty brave for her time, and I hope that in my lifetime, I’ll see a woman become president.”

BIOGRAPHY Klaus learned from an early age that he had an interest in food and cooking when he started helping in his parent’s restaurant at the age of ten. He enjoyed the environment so much, that he started an apprenticeship at the Augsburger Hotel Riegele at the age of 16. Klaus has been working in hotels and restaurants ever since, including the famous Ecke Stuben in Augsburg and the Post Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Throughout his career he has

Many of the recipes Klaus presents are his own crossover creations, which he is happy to share with you. Klaus has been offering private cooking classes for around three years now for groups up to eight people, either in your own home or in Klaus’ kitchen in the KMC, for slow food enjoyment with family and friends.

Ingredients (for 4 people)

for gnocchi 1 pound boiled peeled mashed potatoes 2 tablespoons semolina 1 tablespoon potato starch 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground white pepper 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

Ingredients

for sauce 3 onions, finely diced 1 clove of garlic, diced 2 tablespoons sunflower oil ½ cup vegetable broth ½ cup milk ½ cup liquid cream ¼ pound gorgonzola cheese, cubed 1 ½ cups cherry tomatoes ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper A dash of nutmeg

Gnocchi Preparation Boil potatoes the night before. Peel them before storing them in the refrigerator for the night. Mash potatoes the next day. Add semolina, potato starch, eggs and seasonings. Make a firm dough. Lightly flour a work surface. Put your dough on the surface and knead it gently to incorporate the flour. Only knead for about a minute. Roll into ¾-inch roll. Cut into squares. Prepare a large pot of salted boiling water. Put about 12-15 gnocchi in the boiling water. Wait for them to come back to the surface. This takes about two minutes. Then they are done. Remove from pot and repeat until all gnocchi are cooked. Sauce Preparation Wash spinach and allow to dry. Heat a pan with oil. Add onions, garlic and spinach. When it begins to wilt, let it simmer for approximately 2 minutes. Add broth and milk and allow to simmer again for 2 minutes on low. Add cheese and allow it to melt. With a hand-held blender, mix the ingredients until the spinach is the desired size. Add seasonings and liquid cream. For serving, use deep dish plates, placing gnocchi in first. Add sauce and garnish with tomatoes or parmesan cheese.

Functional fitness comes to Rhine Ordnance Barracks Story and photos by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate The smell of brand-new fitness equipment fills the air inside of the Special Events Center on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. It comes from hundreds of never-before-used items that have been set in place for the functional fitness area slated to open this fall. Walking into the spacious new area is like setting foot into uncharted gym territory. The lucky ones to put this equipment to use for the first time will be the Soldiers of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. In an ever-changing Army, programs and services offered to Soldiers constantly adapt to fit the needs of the mission. Robert Bigelow, chief of Community Recreation Division for the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, explained that functional fitness is the type of fitness the Army is moving toward. Bigelow, a retired Air Force special agent, said, “Functional fitness prepares a Soldier to accomplish the mission. You lift weights, you do cardio, you build your core muscles; all of these things help you to perform your job.” Functional fitness is built upon the foundation of training muscles through the use of functional movements, or movements that mimic everyday, realworld tasks. The overall goal of training and strengthening the different muscle groups of the body is to achieve a level of physical fitness that allows

for an easier, more active lifestyle with reduced risk of injury. “Say you have to change a tire on a Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck out in the field, you have to have the core strength and upper body strength to do that, and that’s what this is for,” Bigelow explained. Putting together this functional fitness area has not been an easy task for Bigelow and his staff. Finding the space, obtaining the equipment, setting everything up and getting the proper training and guidance are among some of the challenges they have faced for the better portion of this year. The area is expected to open in September and will be available initially by reservation only to active-duty Army units. An email with more information will be sent out to units, inviting them to schedule a time during physical training hours to use the space with ROB Fitness Center and receive training from their master fitness trainers prior to using the equipment. Soldiers will have the opportunity to work with a variety of equipment, to include Rogue I-24 Infinity rigs, barbells, rowing machines, air bikes, medicine balls, kettlebells, sleds, tires, glute ham developers, sledgehammers and more, at no cost. Bigelow explained that any level of fitness is welcome, as master fitness trainers will be available to assist with training. “Don’t be afraid of it; just come out and try it,” encouraged Bigelow. To find out more information or to schedule the area for use, contact ROB Fitness Center at 493-2241.

86th MXS wins intramural softball championship by Senior Airman Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Glints of sunlight shimmer through the squinted eyes of an 86th Maintenance Squadron softball player as he steps up to the batting plate and rears back his bat. The crowd erupts into a mix of jeers, taunts, and praises as the 786th Force Support Squadron’s pitcher hurls the ball confidently through the air over home plate. With a loud, thunderous crack, the crowd is enveloped by a silent amazement as the batter redirects the ball over the fence. Three 86th MXS players stride around the bases to home plate contributing to the team’s 2017 Intramural Softball Championship Game win at the Southside Fitness Center softball field Aug. 23 on Ramstein. “We came into the season knowing

we were going to win the trophy,” said Senior Airman Etienne Leboeuf, 86th MXS precision measurement equipment laboratory journeyman and softball team assistant coach. “We played every game with that mentality. If we hadn’t, we wouldn’t have won in the end, because the other teams were competitive.” Being optimistic and having the same attitude and mindset allowed the team to come together and win battles on and off the field. “It feels good to come out here and play with this team,” said Staff Sgt. Jose Otero, 86th MXS aerospace ground equipment craftsman and softball team coach. “We saw a lot of camaraderie where all the shops in maintenance came together and played toward a unified goal. We are all looking forward to playing together next year.”

Hospital commander makes donating blood a priority by Colleen Urban ASBP Blood Donor Recruiter

the donor center, find it on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ASBBCEUR.

A busy schedule sometimes makes it difficult for anyone to find time to donate blood. Now imagine being the commander of the largest U.S. hospital in Europe. Amid meetings, patients and staff, it is something that could easily be ignored. This is not the case for Army Col. Timothy Hudson, commander of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl. Hudson intentionally made time to come donate blood at the Armed Services Blood Bank Center-Europe, because he has witnessed the need for human blood on a personal level. In 2005, he deployed to Mosul, Iraq, where he served as the 47th Combat Support Hospital Intermediate Care Ward nursing officer in charge, in addition to the chief nurse of the 274th Forward Surgical Team. “We were in Iraq for a year. While assigned to the Forward Surgical Team, we carried blood with us, we had to have it and when we went into operations where we thought that we would potentially need it, we would request more,” Hudson said. “Well, that blood would come from people donating in the European area, just like what I am doing now.” Hudson personally saw how pow-

About the Armed Services Blood Program Since 1962, the Armed Services Blood Program has served as the sole provider of blood for the United States military. As a tri-service organization, the ASBP collects, processes, stores and distributes blood and blood products to Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and their families worldwide. As one of four national blood collection organizations trusted to ensure the nation has a safe, potent blood supply, the ASBP works closely with our civilian counterparts by sharing donors on military installations where there are no military blood collection centers and by sharing blood products in times of need to maximize availability of this national treasure. To find out more about the ASBP or to schedule an appointment to donate, please visit www.militaryblood.dod.mil. erful it was for individuals to donate blood. “The blood they were donating, even just a week prior, could be assisting a service member in need,” he said. “Even though a blood donor may not be deployed, they are still a part of the fight.” After witnessing firsthand how Armed Services Blood Program blood is used in combat areas, he made a promise to himself and his fellow service members and their families. “I will do my part,” he said. “Not only will I ensure that I am donating

regularly, I will get the word out about how important it is. As the LRMC commander, on the ground in my first 30 days, one of the first things I wanted to do was come donate blood and lead by example.” No matter how busy life can get, there is someone out there that needs you to make time and save their life by donating blood. World’s biggest wine fest takes place Sept. 9 to 18

Courtesy photos

Bad Duerkheim celebrates the biggest wine fest of the world. The event takes place next to the giant barrel, which houses a restaurant, today to Tuesday and Sept. 15 to 18.

The traditional “Wurst markt,” known as the world’s biggest wine fest, will start today only 35 kilometers east of Kaiserslautern. For the 601st time, Bad Duerkheim along the German Wine Street will host this annual fest in two parts: from today to Tuesday and then again from Sept. 15 to 18. Organizers expect about 600,000 visitors from all over the world. An amusement park with about 300 vendors and ride own ers will be set up on the 45,000 square meter fest grounds, next to the “Duerkheimer Fass,” the world’s biggest wine barrel. This barrel actually houses a restaurant and if it was used as a barrel, it could hold 1.7 mil lion liters of wine. The Wurstmarkt, meaning sausage fair, received its name from the fact that fest goers ate enormous amounts of sausage during the event in the first part of the 19th century. However, the main attraction of the fest are 36 little wine tents called “Schubkarchstaende,” wheelbarrows, because vint ners rolled wine barrels on wheelbarrows up to “Monte Sancti Michaeli,” Michelsberg hill, to quench pilgrims’ thirst in the 15th century. Each year at the end of September on Michael’s day, pilgrims visited the little cha pel on top of the hill. On the way up there, vendors sold their goods. Then church dig

nitaries no longer accepted this kind of pilgrimage. Market activities were relocated to the bottom of Michelsberg, and the “sausage fair” was born. In the year 1910, city offi cials decided to celebrate the fest earlier in September and no longer on Michaels’ day, because of better weather. In 1926, the Wurstmarkt got extended by a day, in 1951 by seven, and finally in 1965, the fest was extended by eight days. Since 1985, the fest is nine days long. Wurstmarkt will begin at 5 p.m. today with a concert in front of the Kurhaus (offi cial spa building). At 5:30 p.m. a parade with musicians, vintners and officials will lead from the Kurhaus to the festival grounds, where the Wurstmarkt officially opens at 6 p.m. Rides will include merry gorounds, auto scooters, a giant Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, and fast rides such as Breakdance, Fire and Ice, Devil Rock and Take Off. There will be food and candy booths, fest tents with live bands, and a wine village with wine tents. The historical wine tents (Schubkaerchler) will open at 10 a.m. and the rides at noon each day. The event’s first fireworks display is scheduled for 9 p.m. Sept. 12, and the second one will close out the fest 9 p.m. Sept. 18. Trains are available to give visitors the chance to leave

their cars at home. They run from Kaiserslautern to Bad Duerkheim about every 30 minutes until 6 p.m.; then trains travel every hour. Passengers have to change trains in Neustadt. Festgoers can travel back by train from Bad Duerkheim to Kaiserslautern and Landstuhl on additional trains at 10:05 p.m., 10:40 p.m., 11:09 p.m., 11:36 p.m., 0:08 a.m., 0:38 a.m., 1:38 a.m. and 2:38 a.m. For details on train times, visit www.vrn.de or www. dertakt.de, or get the train schedule at the Window to RheinlandPfalz counter in the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center.
