US, Spanish fire departments host equipment familiarization training

Firefighters assigned to the 496th Air Base Squadron and Spanish fire and emergency services personnel receive familiarization training on a U.S. fire engine at Morón Air Base, Spain, April 19. Integrated training allowed both fire departments to evaluate the potential increase in response time, resources and manning in a combined response to an emergency.

THE HOUSING HYPE

MOLD — A health risk in your home

The health and safety of our residents is a top concern for the KMC Housing Office. Our commitment to you is to provide our housing residents with a safe living environment. In Germany, mold can often be found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. The catalyst that all mold needs is moisture. As such, you are most likely to encounter mold in damp places such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and crawl spaces.

Identifying the presence of mold early is critical. Often, it will appear as fuzz or dust on surfaces. Even hard surfaces, such as dressers, appliances, and shelves can develop mold. Be sure to inspect vertical surfaces (walls, sides of dressers, etc.) when cleaning for mold. Also, musty odors may be an indication of mold and should be further investigated by a visual inspection. Unfortunately, and too often, mold is left unattended, and it flourishes and spreads before anything is done to remove it.

So, what can you do? Prevention is the easiest way to control mold. Limiting the amount of moisture using exhaust fans, proper ventilation and routine cleaning will greatly reduce the chances of mold.

What do I do if I have mold in my house?

If living on-base, you can call the MFH Maintenance Contractor (Vectrus 06371 463 9510). If you live off-base, you should immediately talk with your Landlord if you suspect mold growth in your home.

For more information on mold, we recommend that you go to the on-line link for the Environmental Protection Agency at: https://www.epa.gov/mold/brief-guide-moldmoisture-and-your-home

Approaching future together: Partnership certificate signing solidifies KMC’s commitment to GACO

In a significant gesture of partnership and collaboration, key leaders from the Kaiserslautern Military Community and the local German community signed a partnership certificate in Kaiserslautern, April 25.

The certificate formalizes and solidifies their collective commitment to the German-American Community Office’s mission, promoting the integration of U.S. military members, civilian employees and their families into the local German community.

The ceremony, held at the Kaiserslautern City Hall Rathaus, brought together U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Paul Moga, Third Air Force commander; Beate Kimmel, Lord Mayor of Kaiserslautern; and U.S. Army Col. Reid Furman, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander.

“For more than 21 years, GACO’s dedicated staff from the city of Kaiserslautern, the 86th Airlift Wing, and the United States Army Garrison Rheinland Pfalz has supported thousands of U.S. military personnel and their families,” Moga said. “By opening their doors and their phone lines, this office has made it possible for Americans to make this community their home away from home.”

Established on Feb. 19, 2003, and jointly staffed by personnel from the 86th Airlift Wing, USAG RP and the Kaiserslautern city administration personnel, the

GACO operates under the patronage of Moga and Kimmel, underscoring its pivotal role in facilitating communication and collaboration between public officials and residents of the KMC.

In addition to its core functions, GACO serves as a platform for exchange between the local German community and representatives of other nations, along with the U.S. military, addressing a wide

range of questions about life in Germany and promoting integration efforts. With its multilingual staff and extensive network of contacts, GACO manages an average of 3,000 inquiries annually — further highlighting its vital role within the community.

“The GACO’s mission is to assist with handling administrative and cultural matters, as well as providing information on host nation

policies,” said Roberto Da Costa, GACO chief of operations. “Our office not only facilitates communication but also helps to strengthen German-American partnerships, offering comprehensive support to newly arrived military members and residents of the Kaiserslautern region.”

Through initiatives like GACO, the enduring German-American friendship continues to thrive and

approach the future together — serving as a symbol of unity and partnership in the community.

To receive assistance from GACO, individuals are encouraged to reach out by phone at +49 (0) 631 363-3010 or by email at info@ gaco-kl.de. For more information please visit the GACO website at https://www3.kaiserslautern.de/ gaco/.

United and strong: Spanish-American relationship

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Eve Daugherty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

In the springtime of southern Spain, long roads reach out into the distance beneath bright blue skies with the fresh scent of olives swirling in the breeze. Scenic views of neatly arranged olive tree groves span beyond the horizon. On a bridge above route A-360, a shepherd guides sheep safely over the road. Further down A-360, tucked in the countryside about 40 minutes southeast of Sevilla, is Morón Air Base, home to a strong and flourishing bond between the Spanish and American air forces.

The ability of U.S. forces to integrate and operate in conjunction with Spain is critical to bolstering a relationship capable of swiftly and decisively meeting any potential challenge at Morón AB and across the globe.

“Relationships are a cornerstone of our national security strategy and emphasized at every level down, to include our squadron’s vision,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Christopher E. K. Curry,

496th Air Base Squadron commander. “Navigating relationships between nations is complex, but is ultimately a force multiplier to achieve common goals based on shared values and a safer world.”

Several flights within the 496th ABS on Morón AB have benefited from bilateral integration efforts, most evidently seen through the successes of security forces, fire and emergency services, and air traffic control personnel.

While the 496th ABS Security Forces Flight makes up nearly one-third of the active duty U.S. presence on Morón AB, training with their Spanish security forces counterparts has proven beneficial to their efficiency, strategies and planning, said Tech. Sgt. Gregory Pfeiler, 496th ABS Security Forces defender. “We train a lot and we train frequently, so knowing what resources our partners are able to offer is a big key in developing our training plans,” he added.

Recently, both USAF Airmen and Spanish air force security forces personnel demonstrated an additional benefit of bilateral integration through their comple-

tion of the first-ever combined active shooter training exercise at Morón AB.

“The Spanish already had standard operating procedures for locking down the affected area, which enabled us to effectively dispatch and control any kind of situation in the area immediately,” Pfeiler said. “We had direct, instant communication. Thanks to the Spanish, we are 100 percent stronger together.”

Both U.S. and Spanish security forces now practice together, training like they fight, and have permanently implemented combined patrols. In the command center, U.S. Airmen and Spanish defenders sit side-by-side responding to calls.

An integrated training initiative at Morón AB with the two nation’s fire department personnel has also been mutually beneficial.

Scott Zrakovi, 496th ABS fire and emergency services chief, met with his Spanish air force fire chief counterpart to revitalize an old agreement that allowed the two departments to work together. Since then, U.S. and Spanish fire and emergency services departments have held combined training sessions to teach each other about various equipment unique to their operations, and to learn each department’s capabilities during a crisis situation.

“The more resources you can put towards a specific incident, the quicker it can be contained and we can deliver a more powerful response,” said Michael Barry, 496th ABS fire and emergency services assistant chief. “The more firefighters, water and resources available keeps everyone on base safer.”

U.S. Air Force security forces defenders assigned to the 496th Air Base Squadron perform a combined patrol with a Spanish air force defender at Morón Air Base, Spain, April 16. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Arturo Herrera, 496th Air Base Squadron Operational Support Team tower watch supervisor, briefs a Spanish air force controller at Morón Air Base, Spain, April 17. The controllers awaited the arrival of a B-1B Lancer assigned to Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, during Bomber Task Force 24-2.

Combining forces and sharing training plans and strategies has allowed both security forces and fire and emergency services to streamline processes, and learn how they can work together to grow and perform as one unit.

Similarly, USAF air traffic controllers also combine their forces, train together and share standards to enhance their operations in the air traffic control tower. The controllers’ unified efforts allow Airmen to assist the Spanish air force controllers when needed while strengthening their own capacity to perform.

“We provide any additional support they may need with Spanish Eurofighters and when other NATO aircraft come in,” said Staff Sgt. Arturo Herrera, 496th ABS Operational Support Team tower watch supervisor.

“We adhere to USAF and Federal

Aviation Administration rules with our Department of Defense assigned aircraft. However, with NATO and host nation aircraft, we can provide that support because we get trained under their standards and we are qualified to work their air traffic too.”

In an effort to meet Spanish standards and operating procedures, USAF air traffic controllers assigned to the 496th ABS are required to attend the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center for Spanish before arriving at Morón AB. These Airmen also must complete continued language studies to remain fluent and increase their ability to communicate effectively with the host nation. These efforts also aid in fostering the working relationships they have formed with the Spanish forces.

“These relationships have been

built on a foundation of good rapport, which allows us to establish trust,” Herrera said. “The trust we build here helps us accomplish our mission.”

With increased bilateral training, U.S. Airmen at Morón AB are able to learn systems, equipment, processes, and tactics Allies offer to improve effectiveness and interoperability in various geographic areas.

“Collaboration between the USAF and Spanish air and space force at Morón is at an all-time high,” Curry said. “This extends to our relationships with the Office of Defense Cooperation, Defense Attache Office, and the U.S.-Spain Permanent Committee in Madrid. These partnerships enable us to move out quickly on initiatives to address critical mission needs in a rapidly changing global environment.”

496 ABS projects airpower from Morón

Nestled between Spanish mountains, olive groves, sunflower fields and farmlands lies one of the U.S. Air Force’s smallest — yet most critical — bases.

As Morón Air Base’s host squadron, the 496th Air Base Squadron provides the same type of support functions as any other group, wing or installation but with approximately 500 personnel. In comparison the 86th Airlift Wing also provides installation host support and is operated by nearly 8,500 members, further shining light on the work of 496th ABS Airmen.

The 496th ABS provides combat and quality-of-life support to deployed and transient military forces, along with support for permanent party personnel and their families. The 496th ABS has supported anything from bomber task forces, refueler deployments, and fighter jet coronets, to annual drill training for reservists and hosting Marine Corps Rapid Response Forces over the last few years.

“Morón Air Base is in a key location in southwestern Europe — close to both North Africa and the United States — and the U.S. Air Force’s only base in Spain,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Curry, 496th ABS commander. “Our mission is to provide reception, staging, onward movement, integration, base operating support, and

senior airfield authority for all transient, temporary duty, and deployed forces to project power across the area of responsibility with our Allies and partners. This is all accomplished by the 496th ABS as the host and sole squadron at Morón.”

The squadron is made of seven flights spanning airfield operations, security forces, civil engineer, logistics, force support, contracting, communications, and installation management functions. The flights consist of 44 air force specialties to support the various missions that transit through the base, all working in sync with each other to execute a wide berth of mission sets.

“The squadron executes duties normally held by more than half a dozen squadrons and at the group and wing levels at a main operating base,” said Curry. “The scope of mission requirements at Morón requires the flights to act as mini squadrons and be the subject matter experts in their functional areas. This is a lot of responsibility for young company grade officers and senior NCOs, but allows for swift, tactical-level execution with decision making delegated to the most appropriate corners of base operations.”

In addition to 200 Airmen and civilians in the 496th, Morón AB has approximately 300 contractors to help keep the mission going. Achieving the reputation as the Air Force’s premier air base squadron could not be possible without

the support of Spanish Allies, local national employees and contractors, said Tech. Sgt. John Sinclair, 496th ABS Contracting Flight noncommissioned officer in charge of infrastructure support.

“In Spain, especially in the area surrounding Morón, English is not a very common second language,” said Sinclair. “Being a short tour, the local national employees are our continuity and are vital to our mission. They understand the culture, the processes and the language. We wouldn’t be able to succeed without them.”

Since Morón AB’s activation in 1953, the base has been operating side-by-side with U.S. and Spanish Allies. This relationship has enabled the base to be home to fighter jets, bombers and refuelers. Although the number of personnel and the mission set has fluctuated throughout the years, today the Airmen of the 496th ABS stand ready to project air power for any mission thrown their way.

406th AEW establishes regional command post, streamlines C2 operations

Air

The 406th Air Expeditionary Wing recently streamlined its command and control operations across Africa through the establishment of a new regional command post at Ramstein Air Base. The C2 node, which was officially designated as the 406th AEW Africa Regional Command Post on April 18, is the product of a consolidation of the formerly geographically separated command posts, located at both the 409th and 449th Air Expeditionary Groups, and has served as a 24/7 C2 operations center for both regions since becoming fully operational earlier this month.

“What we did was bring the command post closer to the wing,” said Capt. David Clapp, 406th AEW A3/5 director. “By being able to see what’s happening across the (area of responsibility), we can pick out specific capabilities that may be necessary everywhere, and not just one location.”

As the focal point for commanders across the wing, the new regional operations center is anticipated to reduce facility and equipment costs, enhance the flow of information and improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of C2 operations within the U.S. Air Forces Africa AOR.

“(The command post) is not entirely made for being close to the action, it’s for creating

decision space,” Clapp added. “Getting that real time information as fast as possible to the decision makers increases their ability to come up with better decisions faster.”

Master Sgt. Samantha Dickerson, 406th AEW C2 Operations superintendent, said the expected amount of time needed to set up a command post of this measure would consist of roughly one year of planning and six months of execution.

The team here at the 406th AEW, however, was able to accomplish this task within a three-month timeframe.

“Staying organized was crucial,” said Staff Sgt. Devon Galbraith, 406th AEW C2 Operations Specialist and project manager for the new command post. “I started out by talking with our command posts in Africa, both for the 409th and 449th, to figure out what their mission was, what their processes were, and what kind of systems they use. From there, it was getting all the products from the group command posts and merging them into a wing product.”

In addition to consolidating all necessary checklists and

procedures, Galbraith and his team of C2 operations specialists ensured 24/7 operations could be met prior to the arrival of the newest deployment rotation, the first team to be officially assigned to the Africa Regional Command Post.

With the new C2 node now fully operational, the team said they will continue refining the new processes set in place to maintain and execute C2 from any location, including expeditionary and contested environments, to better support the accomplishment of U.S. Air Forces Africa mission objectives.

Sustaining Germersheim’s greenery: USAG RP commits to saving planet, one tree at a time

This spring, the Department of Public Works and Environmental Management embarked on a groundbreaking initiative as part of the Environmental FY23 Natural Resources Management contract for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz in Germersheim. The focus was planting trees on Germersheim’s designated picnic area. But this was not a mere replication of the past. Instead, it was a thoughtful selection of tree species that could better withstand the evolving climate conditions. “We want to replace them with climate-resistant tree species and thus preserve the special character of the picnic area that our tenants can use. Tree planting is an effective measure to protect the climate and nature,” stated Johannes Haid, Germersheim Army Depot safety engineer and building biologist for the Department of Public Works and Environmental Management. Nestled in the scenic terrain of Central Europe, the Germersheim Army Depot covers over 430 acres and plays a vital role as a logistics distribution and warehouse center for the U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz, based in Kaiserslautern. USAG-RP supports three primary tenant units on GAD, which functions as a crucial logistical hub receiving, storing, and distributing supplies all over Europe and Africa for entities such as the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, Defense Commissary Agency, and the Defense Logistics Agency. These efforts bolster missions across the European, Central Command, and Africa theaters of operation. Every day, more than 200 trucks traverse through its grounds. This lush and lively locale has been noted for its peaceful picnicking spots. However, in recent years, the tranquility of this area has been threatened by the harsh realities of climate change.

The combination of hot, dry summers and the permeable, sandy soils unique to the Germersheim area has led to the demise of a significant number of old trees, ranging from approximately 19 to 70 years old. These towering sentinels, once guardians of shade and shelter, have all but succumbed to the onslaught of environmental stressors.

Johannes Haid, GAD safety engineer and building biologist for the Department of Public Works and Environmental Management stated, “We are all affected by climate change. Even here on the installation. It was frightening to see that nearly 20 of the old and large pine trees on the post have died in the last two to three years due to the hot, dry summers.”

Recognizing the dangers posed by the dying trees, garrison authorities took swift action to ensure the safety of military personnel and guests by marking hazardous areas and cordoning them off during outdoor events such as the DeCA summer gathering. However, just like all things in life and nature, amidst the challenges lies opportunities for renewal and resilience. The objective is clear: replace the dying trees while preserving the special landscape character and central value of the area. This endeavor is not only a restoration effort but a proactive response to the escalating impacts of climate change on our natural environment.

In spring 2024, the DPW-ENV embarked on a groundbreaking initiative as part of the Environmental FY23 Natural Resources Management contract for USAG-RP. The focus was planting trees on Germersheim’s designated picnic area. But this was not a mere replication of the past. Instead, it was

a thoughtful selection of tree species that could better withstand the evolving climate conditions. “We want to replace them with climate-resistant tree species and thus preserve the special character of the picnic area that our tenants can use. Tree planting is an effective measure to protect the climate and nature,” stated Haid.

A diverse array of trees was carefully chosen, blending Central European stalwarts with sub-Mediterranean species, each selected for its resilience and adaptability. Among them were Traubeneiche (Irish Oak), Flaumeiche (Pubescent Oak), Waldkiefer (European Red Pine), Schwarzkiefer (Black Pine), Esskastanie (Sweet Chestnut), and Walnuss (Walnut Tree).

The task did not end with planting; it extended to ensuring the survival and thriving of these new inhabitants. Adequate planting substrate, topsoil, watering bags, and sturdy stabilizations were put in place, laying the groundwork for their success. The outlook is one of cautious optimism. The successful planting of trees will be evaluated in the following year, during the second vegetation period in fall 2025. This evaluation will not only gauge the survival rate of the new trees but also their ability to thrive in the face of the ever-changing climate conditions.

As Germersheim’s picnic area undergoes this transformative journey, it serves as a beacon of hope and resilience in the fight against climate change. Through thoughtful planning, proactive measures, and community engagement, we can work together to safeguard our precious natural spaces for generations to come. In sustaining the environment, the Army secures the mission by ensuring environmental infrastructure is managed in harmony and bin balance with readiness and modernization.

• USAG RP manages 29,000 acres, with 23,608 maneuver acres.

• The Army provides a home to more than 250 threatened and endangered species on 120 Army sites. There are approx. 650 legally protected Threatened and Endangered Species at USAG RP (more than 100 plant species and over 500 animal species).

• USAG RP manages approx. 5,700 ha legally protected natural conservation/ preservation areas, including state level protected biotopes (136 ha) up to European wide protected Natura 2000 Areas (5,470 ha).

• USAG RP has 74 archaeological sites, consisting of graves and roads dating back to Celtic and Roman times as well as historical protected buildings and building ensembles.

• The USAG RP still manages 23 active soil and groundwater cleanup projects

‘Sustain the Mission, Secure the Future:’ USAG RP honors Earth Day with tree planting event at Smith Barracks

The U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz commemorated Earth Day by planting a cherry tree in front of the headquarters building on Smith Barracks, April 22. Earth Day, observed annually on Apr. 22, serves as an international event to increase awareness and concern for the environment.

“‘Sustain the mission, secure the future’ is the motto of Earth Day 2024,” said Jae Kim, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz deputy garrison manager for Baumholder.

“For 54 years, the Army has marked Earth Day with events across its garrisons, showcasing proactive measures, environmental considerations, and collaboration with partners to adapt missions and manage military ranges.”

Planting a tree on this day is a tradition at the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz.

“I am delighted that the mayors of the City and District of Baumholder, Günther Jung and Bernd Alsfasser, as well as the command team of the 16th Sustainment Brigade — Col. Matthew Alexander and Command Sgt. Maj. Jason Towns — are supporting us in planting the tree today,” said Kim.

Principal Richard Dye and second-grade students from Smith Elementary School also joined the event, with a special surprise.

Teachers Louise Gregory and Brittney Peace prepared a poem and a song about the Earth, which the second graders performed.

Before the planting began, Kim posed a series of questions to the children about Earth Day and the event. “Who can tell me who our guests are, what type of tree we’re planting, and whether we can harvest anything from it?” The children eagerly responded with answers to each question.

“Our Earth is special and there is only one,” were the first few words of the poem recited enthusiastically by all the children. They followed this with a collective rendition of Jane Yolen’s “Earth Day Song,” earning a round of applause for their excellent performance.

Later, the guests of honor, along with Dye and Travis Monson, supervisory general engineer for the Directorate of Public Works at Baumholder, grabbed the shovels and filled the hole around the cherry tree with soil. Meanwhile, the children transported soil to the tree by hand.

A second tree planting activity was arranged for the mayors. Last year, streets on the Baumholder installation underwent renaming. The street adjacent to the PX is now known as Holunder-Weg.

“I proposed this name to commemorate our close ties with Baumholder,” said Kim. “The elderflowers in the city’s coat of arms inspired me.”

Earth Day served as the official unveiling of the road’s new name.

“We are planting three elderberry bushes along this road today,” he added. “May they blossom and grow, become as strong as our decades-long friendship, and strengthen our future.”

Project Arc: Delivering tailored innovations to 435th AGOW warfighters

U.S. Air Force and Space Force professionals need agile and innovative solutions to solve the technical problems of today and tomorrow — and the Project Arc team delivers just that.

The 435th Air Ground Operations Wing hosted the first Project Arc team October 2023April 2024 at Ramstein Air Base. The team integrated with 435th AGOW units, and conducted a broad range of technological support and advancements to improve mission accomplishment and solve problems encountered by warfighters in the field.

“Airmen are our most valuable asset; if they are empowered with support and resources, we can bring their ideas and solutions to fruition,” said Col. Matthew Bartlett, 435th AGOW commander. “That is why Project Arc was brought to Germany. Our Airmen recognized a need for growth, and together they are paving the way for agile and innovative ways to meet warfighters’ needs.”

Project Arc, a diverse group of scientists and engineers equipped with skill sets geared towards technical solutions, leverages the STEM talents of uniformed members by embedding them with operational units in the field to identify and solve emergent problems for the warfighter.

The team’s primary project while embedded with 435th AGOW units centered on advancements to the Global Command and Control System, which is designed to provide U.S. armed forces with a near real-time picture of air and ground obstacles that might affect ground troops in the battlespace.

“Through the collaboration

with the Project Arc team, we have successfully defined processes and technical requirements for integrating spectrum data into the wing’s core operational processes,” said Tech. Sgt. Blake Golledge, electromagnetic support innovation cell noncommissioned officer in charge. “As a result, our wing is on its way to be equipped to deliver real-time spectrum alerts that can create a blue-print for ground troops when providing crucial insight and situational awareness, ultimately providing mission assurance and force protection.”

Additional projects included the creation of a Space-A travel mobile app designed for service members and their families to search available flights in a user-friendly platform; updating myFSS capabilities where users can upload and share documents in need of signatures while tracking where it is currently at in the routing process; and implementing a new system to aid in tracking expenditures accumulated by aircraft personnel.

What is Project Arc?

Project Arc was established in July 2020 as a grassroots effort under AFWERX to forge ahead in the U.S. Air Force 2030 Science and Technology Strategy.

The current team consists of four U.S. Air Force military personnel from various Air Force Specialty Codes including cyber defense operations, special operations combat systems and cyberspace effects operations — a diverse group of forward thinkers.

critical interventions that ’buy back time’ for personnel, directly influencing real-world operations and, ultimately, the future of combat readiness and strategic advantage.”

Currently, Project Arc works within a six-month rotational program, embedding Airmen and Guardians at operational wings. Its ultimate goal, Olshove said, is to reduce the barriers between problem solvers and warfighters, greatly streamlining requirements assessment, prototyping and solution refinement with the potential to impact any Airmen or Guardian’s day-to-day operations.

Qualifications to volunteer as a Project Arc member include being a Department of Defense employee; being current on all deployment requirements; and having a background in science, technology, or engineering. Most importantly, the Project Arc team seeks tinkerers with a passion in figuring out why things work, skilled in transitioning solutions to operators.

“Being part of Project Arc has allowed me to work side-by-side with a diverse team of individuals who bring different skill sets to the table,” added Senior Airman Brandon Freeman, Project Arc computer scientist. “It allows people with special skills and abilities to bring much needed capabilities to wings and units across the globe.”

Whether they are working to modernize how Airmen schedule travel through Military Passenger Terminals, or expanding the types of real-time data that strategic decision makers have on hand for

“Four Airmen from different backgrounds and career fields, each with their own experiences, came together to make a measurable difference in how forward Commanders effectively execute Command and Control authority,” said MSgt. Vincent Olshove, Air Force Research Laboratory Center for Rapid Innovation program manager, and Project Arc coach.

the next fight, the Project Arc team works countless hours together to tackle operationally relevant problem sets — making a significant impact not only on the 435th AGOW mission, but on operational missions and process improvements across the Department of Defense.

“Each mission reinforced our bond and our commitment to the cause, deepening my appreciation for the teamwork and the collective effort involved in what we do,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Isaiah Nicolai, Project Arc software developer. “I’ve heard firsthand from colleagues how our efforts to streamline processes and introduce efficiencies are not just appreciated but seen as

“If you have a mindset geared towards innovation and the tenacity to see complex problems through, then your contributions to Project Arc would be both professionally and personally rewarding,” said Senior Airman Frankarlo Monterrosa, Project Arc U.S. European Command computer scientist and engineer. “It is more than a project; it is an opportunity to be at the forefront of change and innovation — rethinking processes and fostering innovation to advance the U.S. Air Force in science, technology, engineering and other critical disciplines that best serve the force and the Department of Defense.”

86th Medical Group to close KMCC pharmacy KMC leaders discuss current issues, future plans during annual Mayors’ Forum

Story

The 86th Medical Group is closing the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center Pharmacy location at Ramstein Air Base, June 14.

Leading up to the closure the 86th MDG will remain open during weekday hours. After May 4, the satellite pharmacy will be closed on Saturdays in preparation for the full closure.

“We want our community members to know this will not have any effects on the number of prescriptions being filled or quality of service to patients,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Dwayne Baca, 86th MDG commander. “This also has no effect on

other pharmacies in the KMC.”

The 86th MDG pharmacy provides a number of services to their patients and is standing by to help with all pharmaceutical needs.

“We are a standard pharmacy and can provide all the same services a normal pharmacy can provide,” said Lt. Col Zachary Finney, 86th MDG Pharmacy flight commander. “We provide new prescriptions, refills as well as picking up and transferring prescriptions. Our beneficiaries can start a refill request on the Military Health System Genesis Patient Portal or a military treatment facility pharmacy.”

The decision to close the facility was made by 86th MDG leadership to ensure resources are being used effectively.

“This was a decision based on a lack of funds and the cost of each individual script based on the number of available pharmacists and utilization rates,” Baca said. “The closing of this pharmacy will not decrease access to services and our beneficiaries will still have access to pharmacies around the KMC.”

Patients can visit multiple platforms to access information about the pharmacies in the KMC and medical care they receive.

“Our beneficiaries can visit MHS Genesis as well as visit our social media sites,” Finney said. “We do our best to keep all avenues of communication as updated as possible and we will be letting our members know about the care they receive and where to access it.”

ABC IN KMC: Sembach

The tranquil village of Sembach, with an autobahn exit of its own, may not be well known by members in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. However, the U.S. Army installation up on the hill, commonly referred to as Sembach Kaserne, plays a vital role in military history in the region.

The village itself has about 1,100 local inhabitants, and an estimated 200 to 250 American service members and their dependents have also found a home. Always interested and eager to participate in village events, they add dynamic to a lively community.

From 1953 to 1995 the community was home to Sembach Air Base, the 86th Fighter Wing and 17th Air Force. Surprisingly, the base was comprised of two sections roughly a mile apart. The one, up on the hill, called “Heuberg” (hay mountain) lies in Donnersberg County and consisted of administrative facilities, a housing area, schools, a chapel and movie theater, a medical center and two clubs. The other section further south was part of Kaiserslautern County that housed the runway and support facilities, such as the 601st Civil Engineering Squadron and operational units.

You may wonder why such a small installation lies in two different union communities (Winnweiler and Enkenbach-Alsenborn) and even two separate counties. In the postwar era, the military was interested in constructing bases to counter Soviet aggression and to demonstrate strength. On the other hand, farmers struggled to keep their land and heavily protested and interrupted surveying measures. After lengthy negotiations, officials agreed on a compromise and the division of the base. The runway was constructed on the flat area in Kaiserslautern County, while the land on the hill, with little to no agricultural value and mainly forest at the time, in Donnersberg County, could be used for functional facilities. The boundary line between the counties runs almost directly through the gate shack at the entry point on the hill.

In 1995 the flightline premises were returned to the German government and have been developed into a 226-hectare large commercial center with quick access to A63. A number of companies have settled there, including the largest waste disposal enterprise in the region, a glass recycling firm, several energy and

IT-related firms and a large shipping and distribution company, providing job opportunities for a total of 450 employees. One section near the road is allocated for storing heavy U.S. Army vehicles, while former aircraft shelters are now used as storage facilities. A water tower close to the control tower paints a lovely red skyline during summer sunsets.

Many of the organizations on the upper section of the base were relocated to Ramstein Air Base after

1995 and eventually the premises were closed in 2010 to be transferred to the U.S. Army. Since then, a number of Army organizations have moved to the installation, including the U.S. Army Europe Band, the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Medical Readiness Command-Europe, U.S. Army NATO Brigade, 18th Military Police Brigade, 30th Medical Brigade, U.S. Army Corrections Facility-Europe and the USAREUR-AF Registry of

Motor Vehicles. A small Navy unit with close ties to the Army is also stationed there, with a small frog pond, lovingly called “Stingy” by the locals, as the only body of water within reach.

Sembach was part of the French Republic in the early 1800s and it is said that Napoleon himself spent a night at the “Amtshaus” (official house) enroute to Mainz and gave the historic plaza its name “Pariser Hof.” He is also noted for constructing the “Kaiserstrasse” from Paris to Mainz, now known as L401. The “Amtshaus” and the “Zehntenscheune,” (tithe barn), where farmer’s paid dues with the tenth portion of their harvest, had to be torn down and the area in the village center is undergoing construction.

The village itself is a quiet residential area, where children can play ball on side streets and residents enjoy long walks with furry friends along bright yellow rapeseed fields and blue seas of cornflowers. There are also diverse recreational places to experience in the vicinity. Mehlinger Heide is located just across a supermarket on L 401 near Mehlingen. The former maneuver site was decommissioned and declared as a nature reserve in 2001 with walking paths, educational stops, blooming heather in August and offers a great view to Donnersberg in the distance.

Donnersberg is the highest peak in the region, is great for walking and hiking, and a Celtic village open in the summer months is an exciting means of learning and experiencing the lives of ancient mountain dwellers, topped off by a Samhain festival on Oct. 31 every year.

Sembach has a lot to offer throughout the year, such as the “Kerwe” and parade in August, an annual “Bulldog Rennen” (tractor races) in the summer, St. Martin’s parade and bonfire, the boundary walk in November, concerts by the Musikverein, a living Advent calendar in December, a playground fest on May 5, and three restaurants to enjoy and meet locals.

The former runway area has been renatured and is home to large flocks of storks every year as well as scores of smaller bush dwellers and rodents. A large solar park is located at the eastern end of the former runway. A bold old oak tree, once hit by lightning, at the corner of the access road coming up “Snake Hill” speaks of the times when service members were welcomed home with yellow ribbons in the 1970’s.

Quaint as it is, “klein, aber fein” as Germans would say, Sembach may be small, but has played a huge role throughout history and is a charming community today.

Sembach was first officially documented in the 13th century and eleven historic buildings are recorded in the village. These include an old schoolhouse, a town hall, two churches, the “Ritterbau,” a sandstone structure along L401, a former post office and a veteran’s monument at the cemetery.

Sembach SAC hosts celebration honoring USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s

had a really good time. Many of the children said, ’it was the best day ever!’”

Despite inclement weather, the Sembach School Age Center, Child and Youth Services, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, hosted a Month of the Military Child celebration on Sembach Kaserne, Apr. 19.

More than 160 people, including military families and others from the community, gathered for the event, which was moved indoors to make everyone comfortable and give guests an opportunity to truly enjoy themselves.

“This is our second year celebrating our military children and we plan on doing it every year,” said Jessica Ruiz, Sembach SAC supervisory program specialist. “Everyone said they

The event offered many engaging activities, to include face painting sessions, lively games, and an assortment of tasty food options. Miguel Mendoza, Sembach SAC supervisory program specialist, entertained guests with live music playing a variety of popular songs on his guitar.

The event wasn’t just a celebration; it was also a touching tribute to the strength and sacrifices of military children.

“I grew up as a military brat and I know firsthand the sacrifices military children must make so their parents can fight for our country,” said Ruiz. “They are the heart of the military. Many of them will go on to follow in their parents’ footsteps and wear the uniform with pride.”

Ruiz said that MOMC celebrations show the children that their sacrifices don’t go unnoticed, and that the children themselves are recognized for their roles in helping keep our country safe.

“It is important to celebrate MOMC because, even though children are not physically serving in the military, they go through many challenging emotions when their parents deploy or have to relocate during PCSs (Permanent Change of Station),” said Stephanie Alvarez, administrative support assistant, Sembach SAC. “They constantly change schools, gain, and lose friends, and learn to adapt to a new state, or even a new country.”

Alvarez said that these challenges enhance their social skills and allow them to appreciate diversity and cultures all around the world.

“Being a military child isn’t always easy, but it is a unique and special journey, that may not be fully appreciated or understood until adulthood,” she added. “I want to say ’thank you’ to our military children for showing great courage and flexibility, and for being able to overcome so many challenges.”

“As a military child, you are a part of a small and special community that not many people get to be a part of,” she said. “Wherever you go in the world, you leave behind the mark of a resilient and brave military child. That’s something to take pride in.”

Even though they had to move the celebration indoors, the MOMC event proved to be a great success, highlighting the strong sense of community and unity among military families stationed in Rheinland-Pfalz.

Public Health ergonomists offer Move More Month tips for workplace

The modern-day office workplace is often accompanied by large amounts of sedentary time that can be detrimental to good health. This issue impacts many office workers, including service members and the Department of Defense workforce.

Kelsey McCoskey, an ergonomist with Defense Health Agency Public Health, said April’s Move More month offers people a chance to think about how to compensate for long periods of inactivity during their workday.

“People may not realize how much time they spend in seated or inactive postures,” said McCoskey. “Many people experience long durations in seated postures throughout their day in work activities, leisure activities, and during commuting time.”

According to academic papers published in the International

Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity and Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism in 2020, sedentary behavior, defined as time spent seated or reclined while expending little energy, can contribute to numerous negative health outcomes, including heart disease, cancer risk, metabolic disease risk, and even death.

The Department for Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75–150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week, in addition to two fullbody, strength-training sessions.

Individuals who go to the gym or work out daily and meet the HHS physical activity guidelines may still experience an increased risk for negative health effects if the remainder of their day is sedentary.

Sedentary behavior and physical activity affect our bodies through different mechanisms, which is why the amount of time someone spends seated compared to being active during the day can drastically influence their health, said McCoskey.

The HHS daily physical activity recommendations only account for about two percent of daily waking hours, leaving the remaining 98 percent of the time for sedentary activity.

In a 2017 article published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, researchers found that inactivity, defined as not meeting the physical activity guidelines, is not the same as sedentary time. They also found that increasing

moderate to vigorous physical activity by half an hour per day, while beneficial to health, does not significantly impact total sedentary time throughout the day.

McCoskey said ergonomic experts are encouraging individuals to try and replace or interrupt daily sedentary time with light or moderate activities in addition to the time spent exercising. These “sedentary breaks” often include nonexercise activities of daily living, such as doing chores, walking, or even going up and down the stairs. She reminded workers to, “regularly change position, stretch, move from seated to standing, or go for a brief walk to give their body a break.”

McCoskey’s recommendations are supported by several systematic reviews published in academic journals like Sports Medicine, the British Journal of Sports Medicine and the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. These academic journal reviews showed that increasing daily nonexercise activities contribute to the total daily light (and sometimes even moderate) activity recommendations.

McCoskey said this nonexercise activity best serves as a supplement to moderate or vigorous physical activity but can substantially benefit health due to its potential to improve heart health and longevity.

The question is, where is the sweet spot for sedentary breaks?

John Pentikis, ergonomics branch manager at DHA-PH, recommended breaking up sedentary time every 20–30 minutes for 2–3 minutes.

“Standing is not enough, ideally you need to move around to promote blood circulation through the muscles,” said Pentikis.

These recommendations agree with current observations published in Sports Medicine in 2022, that showed breaking up sedentary time with light activity may help to improve cardiovascular health to a greater extent than standing.

The best recommendation is “the more, the better,” said Pentikis. The more activity workers can incorporate into their day, the better.

“Visit a colleague at their desk rather than replying to a message via email,” said Pentikis. “Use the printer, water fountain, or restroom furthest away from you, or use the staircase instead of an elevator.”

Joanna Reagan, a Public Health nutritionist at DHA-PH, suggested walking meetings, where “two to three people join you on a short walk to discuss work options. Or join a virtual meeting via phone and walk and talk simultaneously. Obviously, it depends on the meeting and the people.”

Whatever “exercise snack” workers choose, striving to break up prolonged sedentary time and meeting daily physical activity recommendations will help avoid the negative health effects associated with a sedentary lifestyle.

peaks, bogs, heath, primeval forests, and glacial peak winds that can make you feel like you started in Germany and ended up in Iceland during a winter hike. Boasting Northern Germany’s tallest peak, a Hogwarts Express-style steam train, and all the nature you can handle, Harz National Park makes for an amazing four-season visit.

One of Germany’s best nature experiences

Even if you haven’t been in Germany for long, you’ve probably noticed how densely populated the country is. Drive down almost any road outside a major city, and a village will pop up every few kilometers — sometimes even in places like the Pfalz Forest or the Black Forest. It’s understandable: that’s what happens when you pack 84 million people into a country that’s slightly smaller than Montana.

Which makes Harz National Park all the more magical. It’s kind of like a blank spot on the German map, at least in terms of being populated. Consequently, the nature experience at the park is one of a kind. The forests are deep and tranquil. Clear streams meander along lush verdant valleys. Trails stretch for miles and miles. Waterfalls appear. If you’re seeking a wild frontier in Germany, this may well be where to find it.

The Brocken — Hiking to the summit

The Brocken is northern Germany’s highest peak, and is a brilliant destination for adventurers and day hikers alike. Though it’s only 3,700 feet (1,141 meters) high, don’t let the numbers fool you. The Brocken is imposing, with a peak that is covered in snow from September to May. Every season but summer (and often during the summer, too), glacial north winds can rock the top of the mountain.

For hikers, the Brocken can be a won-

derland. First off, there are many paths to the top of it. One of the best routes, the Goethe Trail, starts from the TorfHaus Visitor Center (which offers ample parking, free admission, and some cool exhibits, including a virtual hike to Brocken peak, just in case you’re there on a rainy day and don’t have good gear). This 10-mile (5 miles there, 5 miles back) trail follows (more or less) the path taken by the great German writer Johann Goethe, when he summited the Brocken in the early 18th century. If he can do it, you can too! Before you start, make sure you pick up a map and useful tips at the visitor center.

Harz National Park’s epic steam train

If bagging German peaks on foot isn’t quite your thing, you could always take the Hogwarts Express, er, that is to say, the Harz narrow gauge train that leads to the Brocken summit. This steam train is, simply put, a fantastic way to experience the

park and the mountain.

The best route for getting there is to leave from Drei Annen Hohne, a little village with a train station about 10 kilometers south of Wernigerode (where you can also pick up the train to Brocken).

From Drei Annen Hohne, the hour-long ride winds through gorgeous forest before the train spirals its way up the mountain and ultimately puts you on top of that part of the world.

Tickets can be a little pricy (more than €40 per person, round trip, depending on where you depart), but they are well worth it. This is one of the most amazing ways to experience Germany. Advance reservations are required, and tickets can be purchased online at https://ticketfaust.hsb-wr.de/.

An excellent place to wander

Last, but certainly not least, Harz National Park offers freedom in a way that can sometimes be hard to find in Germany. Which is to

say, you can get there and just start wandering. There are multiple walking and cycling paths, all of them well-posted, that start from or near any of the five free-of-charge visitor centers sprinkled around the park. Check out the park’s website (https://www.nationalparkharz.de/de/startseite/) before you go, and pick the experience that best suits your needs.

For families (for whom hiking can sometimes mean catastrophe), there are also fantastic focused options, including an amazing kid-tested, parents-approved Dandelion Discovery Path, as well as a fun and informative Nature Myths Path. Whatever you need from nature, you can find it at Harz National Park.

Getting to Harz National Park

By car, the TorfHaus Visitor Center is 4.5 hours from Kaiserslautern, 3.5 hours from Wiesbaden, and 5.5 hours from Stuttgart. Check with DeutscheBahn for train options to Wernigerode or nearby Bad Harzburg.
