Pentagon welcomes Sweden, Finland in ceremony marking NATO anniversary

Defense officials today welcomed Finland and Sweden as NATO’s two newest members in a flag unfurling ceremony as the alliance marked its 75th anniversary.

The two nations’ flags were unveiled alongside those of 30 other member states at the Pentagon — a display that underscores NATO’s unwavering alliance forged amid the threat of Soviet aggression in the aftermath of World War II.

“At the alliance’s core is a sacred promise — one that we reaffirm today — that an attack on one is an attack on all,” said Lisa C. Sawyer, the deputy assistant secretary for European and NATO policy during the flag unfurling ceremony.

NATO’s newest member in March.

Their accession brought an end to longstanding military nonalignment by the two Nordic countries, as Russia’s aggression once again threatened peace and stability on Europe’s eastern flank.

“Putin’s reckless and lawless invasion of Ukraine has brought war back to Europe on a scale that NATO’s founders had hoped to consign to history,” Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III said in a statement. “Today, the world needs NATO as much as ever.”

Austin noted that as the common values that unite NATO allies have been put to the test, the alliance has only grown in strength.

“... we stand together and protect one another as we have for 75 years.”
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

“To the nations of Sweden and Finland, you now have a commitment of the United States of America and 30 other allies to come to your defense should you need it, and we know we have yours,” she said.

The alliance, which began as a 12-member bloc in April 1949, has long served as a beacon of freedom and stability throughout Europe. Over the years, the alliance has grown to include 32 members united by the shared principles of democracy and the rule of law.

Sweden and Finland both applied to join the alliance in May 2022 after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February of that year.

Finland officially joined the alliance exactly one year ago today after receiving unanimous approval from the member states, as is required to join the alliance. Sweden became

MASTHEAD

“In the 21st century, NATO remains the bulwark of our common security, and America’s commitment to this great defensive alliance remains a sacred trust,” he said. “Today’s 32-member alliance is larger than ever after the historic recent addition of the proud democracies of Finland and Sweden — stronger than ever and more united than ever.”

Officials from Sweden and Finland underscored their commitment to the alliance as their flags were unfurled at the Pentagon.

“For us, strong defense, being a strong member of NATO, contributing to the 360 degrees of NATO security is something that we have internalized, and we take it seriously,” said Mikko Hautala, Finland’s ambassador to the U.S. “I think you will see it in all of our actions now and in the future.”

Jonas Wendel, Sweden’s deputy chief of mission to the U.S., said his country’s membership, along with

Finland’s, will create a more predictable geopolitical outlook and add to peace and stability throughout Europe.

The ceremony at the Pentagon comes as NATO marks 75 years since the alliance was founded with the signing of the Washington Treaty on April 4, 1949.

“Never has a single document with so few words meant so much to so many people — so much security, so much prosperity, and so much peace,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg as NATO foreign ministers today gathered in Brussels to mark the anniversary.

“All because of its solemn promise ... we stand together and protect one another as we have for 75 years,” he said.

In his statement marking the milestone, President Joe Biden said that the peace and stability afforded through “the greatest military alliance in the history of the world” did not “happen by accident, nor was it inevitable.”

“Generation after generation, the United States and our fellow allies have chosen to come together to stand up for freedom and push back against aggression knowing we are stronger, and the world is safer, when we do,” he said.

In the face of new challenges, that hard-won peace cannot be taken for granted, Biden cautioned.

“Now, like generations before us, we must choose to protect this progress and build on it,” Biden said. “We must remember that the sacred commitment we make to our allies to defend every inch of NATO territory makes us safer, too, and gives the United States a bulwark of security unrivaled by any other nation in the world.

“And like our predecessors, we must ask ourselves what can we do — what must we do — to create a more peaceful future,” he said.

Do you eat from your garden?

March was National Nutrition Month. This year’s theme is “Beyond the Table.” Do you eat from your garden? If your answer is…, “Yeah, right. NO! Most likely, if you are like me, you don’t have the time or the patience to wait on your fruit and vegetables to grow. However, consuming a variety of fruit and vegetables daily decreases your risk of various diseases (i.e., heart disease, cancer, etc.) and other disorders/ailments. Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and those wonderful phytochemicals — immune properties/antioxidants.

If I’m being honest, I’d eat Idaho potatoes (if longterm, poor health wasn’t a concern!) three times a day — fried, steamed, boiled, or in a chip. Two of my favorite healthy produce items are Pink Lady apples and fresh or frozen broccoli steamed because they are loaded with Vitamins A and C, iron, and taste delicious.

It is recommended that half of your plate be dedicated to fruit and vegetables. So, does your plate usually contain half or is it onefourth or less or no vegetables at all? When you shop for fruit and/or vegetables, do you know what to buy and what nutrients they contain. Many grocery stores now have the nutrition information about the fruit or vegetable on cards/tabs near the produce. Most fruit and vegetables contain fiber (soluble/insoluble), key nutrients such as Vitamins A and C, potassium, iron, folic acid, and a variety of other nutrients which are good for the body.

Have you ever noticed when you shop for groceries, most of the foods your body needs

for nourishment/sustainment are located on the outskirts of the store, in a full circle? Take a look the next time you shop at the commissary or local grocery; your fruit and vegetables will be located on the outskirts of the store, to your left or your right. The aisles are where you will find most of the enticing items such

as your chips, dips, sodas, cereals, candy and prepared or processed dry box foods/ingredients (i.e., macaroni and cheese, Hamburger Helper, etc.). Next time, try to bypass those aisles until you’ve selected and loaded your cart with fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables. You might be pleasantly surprised at how

much healthier you and your grocery cart will look!

If you are in a rush, canned vegetables are acceptable but, fresh/frozen retain more nutritional value. Choose a variety of vegetables such as greens, broccoli, peppers, squash, sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, asparagus, cauliflower, etc. A serving is ½ cup if the vegetable has been cooked, but if served raw, then 1 cup is a serving. Non-starchy vegetables have about 5 to 25 calories per serving; starchy vegetables (i.e., my Idaho potato) will contain about 80 calories per serving. Eat your vegetables as a snack or/and a part of your daily plate serving. I normally combine my vegetables during cooking. I add a tablespoon of olive oil and mixed seasonings to blackeye peas and green beans or vegan meat-like crumbles with hominy corn or lima beans. Remember cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, etc. have about 5 calories per servings.

Fresh or dried fruit such as apples, oranges, pears, berries, peaches, nectarines, avocados are your best choice. Avocados are quite tasty, but often get a “bad rep” due to their high-fat content; remember the fat is monounsaturated and is good for your heart. Fresh is better, but juices are also a good choice. So, if you drink juice as a fruit substitute, ensure you are consuming 100 percent juice. Don’t be fooled by juices that advertise 100 percent Vitamin C – as they might be “loaded” with corn syrup. A serving of fruit can range from one small or medium piece of fruit to ¼ to ½ cup of dried fruit or fruit juice.

Whether you like fruit and don’t like vegetables, or vice versa, you will benefit from a good variety of either.

Military Spouses working in Germany

by German American Community Office

Are you a military spouse looking for a job while your partner is stationed here?

Your SOFA status actually counts as a labor permit within the Germany economy, allowing you to pursue employment outside the wire.

However, when doing so, please keep in mind that all income generated within the German economy is not subject to NATO SOFA. In easier terms, your income will be subject to German taxes and social security payments.

You also need a German health insur-

ance, Tricare alone is not sufficient.

These rules, in principle, also apply if you are self-employed. For example, if you have a small business selling items like handmade soaps and candles on a somewhat professional level, it must be properly registered with German authorities and will be taxed accordingly.

This is obviously just the tip of the iceberg. There are many exceptions, additional regulations, and niche cases for specific professions.

725 AMS, 496 ABS conduct exercise Rising Phoenix at Morón Air Base

The 725th Air Mobility Squadron executed their continuity of operations plan from Naval Station Rota, Spain, to Morón Air Base, Spain, as a part of Exercise Rising Phoenix from Feb. 5-9. The exercise simulated a natural disaster and was meant to assess and demonstrate the joint effort between the 725 AMS, NAVSTA Rota and the 496th Air Base Squadron at Morón Air Base, surging to 24/7 operations to support enroute Air Mobility Command aircraft heading downrange.

Featuring 88 U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy personnel from various career fields and rates, Exercise Rising Phoenix demonstrated the two installations’ ability to work together, maneuvering mobility forces and equipment across the Iberian Peninsula via ground assets. The 725 AMS accomplished this by exercising their ability to disaggregate and re-aggregate at an alternate airfield with support from 496 ABS and NAVSTA Rota personnel.

Personnel from the 725 AMS were tasked with performing 24-hour maintenance, supply, and air mobility command and control functions, while the 496 ABS performed aerial port, ground transportation, airfield operations, fuels management, cyber operations, sustainment services, and reception functions. NAVSTA Rota provided four air transportation specialists to imbed with the 496 ABS, improving host-installation communications and planning with the teams at NAVSTA Rota.

During the weeklong exercise, the joint force supported 12 AMC missions, ferrying 290k lbs. of cargo, 89 passengers and 42 aircrew to accomplish 97 percent of their desired learning objec-

tives. The 725 AMS leveraged ‘Starshield,’ the DoD-contracted version of SpaceX’s ‘Starlink,’ to establish a satellite connection and provide flightline Wi-Fi access, demonstrating the technology’s utility for continuity of operations.

“I could not be more proud of our teams for cultivating the combined, joint, interagency, host nation, and intra-Service partnerships necessary to ensure that critical missions like AMC’s Global Air Mobility Support System can continue anytime and anywhere,” shared Lt. Col. Christopher Curry, 496 ABS and U.S. Forces Morón commander, while echoing senior leaders’ praise. “Watching our 725 AMS and 496 ABS Senior Non-Commissioned Officers and Company Grade Officers showcase mission command was a sight to see. They took intent, trust, and empowerment to execution with exceptional initiative and minimal oversight, proving that the global gateway is ready to take on any challenge.”

The teams also demonstrated Over the Horizon Augmentation technology — HoloLens II augmented reality headsets. HoloLens is a wearable headset that allows multiple users to be shown and share an augmented reality. Pairing it with Starshield technology, the headsets can be used to connect deployed forces with off-site personnel to assist with issues they are experiencing in the field. HoloLens allows users to interact virtually with subject matter experts to troubleshoot complications and facilitate swift resolutions to complex issues that could hinder Rapid Global Mobility.

This technology can potentially reduce or even eliminate the need to deploy additional personnel for mission continuation in the future — a glimpse into the future

of GAMSS command, control and connectivity communications and capabilities.

“The 725 AMS has ambitious goals to get after the USAF Expeditionary Center’s 2024 campaign plan for GAMSS forces,” shared Lt. Col. Brian Shea, 725 AMS commander. “This first iteration of Exercise Rising Phoenix marks a significant investment in the development of our CGOs and SNCOs. Watching our team collaborate seamlessly with our Spanish allies, U.S. Navy and the 496 ABS to shift airflow between our operating locations was truly inspiring. Thank you to all our partners whose contributions made this achievement possible and are excited to grow our partnerships in future exercises and operations.”

Additionally, Exercise Rising Phoenix exposed CGO’s and SNCO’s to the hurdles associated with supporting disaggregation and reaggregation operations at an alternate airfield. The exercise was the perfect opportunity for tactical leaders to refine their Joint Planning Process principles in a controlled environment.

“What was so incredible about our first iteration

of Rising Phoenix was seeing how successful grass root efforts can be,” shared Capt. Rebecca Roach, 725th AMS Detachment 1 commander, I am beyond proud to have been a part of the team that made this happen and cannot wait to see how future iterations of this exercise unfold.

On Feb. 7, members from the 725 AMS and 496 ABS hosted distinguished visitors from both AMC and U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Force Africa to demonstrate the highlights of Exercise Rising Phoenix.

The day began with an overview briefing of the exercise, highlighting the exercise’s goals and objectives. The DVs then visited with key members of the exercise, toured a C-17 Globemaster III and more.

During the visit, HoloLens and Starshield technology was presented by Senior Master Sgt. Anthony

Sewejkis, 725 AMS maintenance superintendent, and operated by Staff Sgt. Juan Castaneda-Bedolla, a 725 AMS client systems technician. They demonstrated the tools by having one user build a mock aircraft model while receiving guidance from the other user with the manual in a separate location. Additionally, the DVs in attendance were able to try on the HoloLens headsets and experience the practicality of the tool themselves. This capability is a glimpse into the future of GAMSS GC3 communications and capabilities.

Exercise Rising Phoenix demonstrated joint interoperability and multi-capability. Executing a successful COOP and refining expertise provided United States European Command forces with valuable lessons learned and helped establish the tactics, tools, and procedures for future operations.

86 AW SARC bridges German, military communities

If you worked where you grew up, what impact could you have? How could family and familiarity influence the work you do?

When reflecting on her childhood, one member of Team Ramstein uses ties to the local community to serve as a guiding light, influencing her perspective and enhancing her ability to connect with others and clients.

U.S. Air Force Capt. Regina Panting, intelligence officer by trade and now the 86th Airlift Wing’s deputy sexual assault response coordinator, draws strength from her upbringing in the local community.

“I think growing up in a cultural melting pot was honestly one of the most amazing things I could

ever ask for,” said Panting. “My father is an Italian American and my mother is German. Growing up speaking German and being around so many people with differences made it easier to understand the perspectives of others.”

Panting spent much of her childhood here in the Kaiserslautern community. She always knew she wanted to join the military and, more specifically, be an officer in the Air Force. She began her career as an enlisted member before being accepted into Officer Training School as a technical sergeant.

“As an intel officer, we get to dip our hands into various pots and learn a little bit of everything,” said Panting. “What drew me to this career was the opportunity to balance mission demands with leadership and personnel care. In the Air Force, the demand for intelligence

is high, and it’s crucial to maintain that balance of taking care of people. For me, it’s about spreading my wings, delving into different kinds of intelligence beyond just imagery analysis, all while improving my leadership skills.”

After years of perfecting this balance, Panting felt ready to fill a larger leadership position as her career continued. She wanted to find ways to diversify her skill set, help her community, and truly step out of her comfort zone. She found a way to answer that calling as the 86th AW deputy SARC.

U.S Air Force Capt. Regina Panting, 86th Airlift Wing deputy sexual assault response coordinator, and Chief Master Sgt. Rex Panting, 700th Contracting Squadron senior enlisted leader and Capt. Panting’s spouse, pose together at Ramstein Air Base, March 13. Capt. Panting draws strength from her marriage and upbringing to connect with victims and provide her best support as a SARC.

Items promoting the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program are displayed March 14 at Ramstein Air Base. The SAPR Program is responsible for oversight of sexual assault policies. SAPR works hand-in-hand with the services and the civilian community to develop and implement innovative prevention and response programs.

with her clients, Panting often opts to wear civilian attire during her interactions. This choice allows her to create a more relaxed atmosphere, easing the unease of those she assists.

“I’ve really stepped out of my shell here in this office,” said Panting. “I’ve gotten opportunities to work with other programs and apply new information to our training to make it more engaging.”

Since arriving at Ramstein in September 2021, Panting has been pivotal in helping numerous victims with translation at medical appointments, facilitating individ-

uals’ access to mental health services off the installation, securing legal representation off base and helping them gain an understanding of German laws.

Regina’s journey stemming from a diverse upbringing to her role as the wing’s SARC, showcases her unwavering commitment to service and compassion. Her ability to bridge communities, lead in various professions and make a tangible difference in the lives of others not only embodies the core values of the Air Force but also serves as an inspiration for other service members.

Baumholder Military Community hosts dedication event for Gold Star families

It had started raining and didn’t look to be letting up.

The downpour wasn’t unusual for Smith Barracks, but in the early Springtime, the gray skies made the normally verdant Baumholder hills look neon in contrast.

Sonia Rogowski, though, only smiled.

“I think this is my husband,” she said, looking around at the gust of wind and rain swirling around her. “His way of saying ‘Hi.’ He used to love playing pranks on me.”

She stuck a hand out, allowing the rain to puddle inside her palm, and laughed.

“This would be just like him.”

Rogowski is a Gold Star spouse, surviving her late husband, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Lucasz Rogowski. Although two years have passed

U.S. Army Col. Reid Furman, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, speaks during a Gold Star commemoration ceremony April 5, on Smith Barracks in Baumholder. The ceremony was followed by a bench dedication during which Furman and the garrison’s command sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch, unveiled a new seating area in honor of fallen service members and their surviving families.

since her husband’s death, the grieving stays constant, she said.

On April 4, the installation held a commemoration ceremony for Gold Star family members, culminating in a bench dedication—a small token of appreciation for the sacrifices made by military families like the Rogowskis.

The term “Gold Star” comes from the Service Flag, which includes a blue star for every immediate family member serving in the U.S. armed forces during any period of war or hostilities. If that loved one died, a gold star replaced the blue star to allow community members to know the price the family paid in the cause of freedom.

There are countless ways to honor Gold Star families, but the ceremony and the bench dedication was Smith Barracks’ way of paying respect not for one day, not for a week, but for future generations to come, said Col.

Sonia Rogowski, Gold Star spouse, holds a framed picture of her husband, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Lukasz Rogowski, during a bench dedication ceremony in honor of Gold Star family members April 4, on Smith Barracks in Baumholder. Sonia attributed the day’s poor weather to her late husband, who always enjoyed playing pranks on her.

Reid Furman, U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz commander.

“The hope is that when someone sits on this bench and looks out over Minick Field here on Baumholder, they’re reminded of those who were lost and the courage, resiliency and sacrifice of the Gold Star family members left behind,” he said.

Furman, though not a Gold Star family member himself, knows the weight of grief and memory carried by surviving family members. In his 24 years in the U.S. Army, he’s deployed to Afghanistan five times, losing comrades-in-arms — friends — during that time.

In his remarks during the ceremony, Furman shared a memento, a personal token he keeps close to him as a means of remembering the fallen.

“I have a workout shirt with the names of the men and women who died in my battalion

between 2004 and 2018,” Furman said, pausing as if recalling a moment, carefully cataloging it within his memory. “I know 13 of the names on that shirt. When I wear it, I am stronger. When I wear it, I somehow find the strength to always do one more set, push out one more rep. Each of those names left behind a Gold Star spouse, Gold Star mother, Gold Star kids. I’m stronger because of them and for them.”

During the bench dedication ceremony, the rain started to come down harder, and the wind blew wilder. Like a trickster, a gust swept underneath Sonia’s umbrella, turning it inside out.

“It’s okay,” she chuckled, folding it back out. “He’s here.”

And so, with hair wind-blown and matted by the rain, Sonia stood unbothered, holding a framed picture of her husband during the ceremony’s invocation. The rain underfoot seeped through the cracks of the cold, hard concrete, feeding the life and verdure underneath.

US Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz unites against assault during awareness month

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz held a Volksmarch at the Baumholder Hall of Champions on Smith Barracks, April 3, to raise awareness for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.

Observed annually in April, SAAPM serves as an essential time to raise awareness about sexual assault and harassment, while emphasizing the importance of preventing such incidents.

The theme for 2024 is “Change Through Unity: Empower. Protect. Prevent.” This theme stresses unity in the fight against sexual assault; promotion of respect and empowerment for all; and the role of all members of the Army team to create a healthy climate while reinforcing their responsibility to act to prevent sexual assault and harassment.

Prior to the Volksmarch, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, Col. Reid Furman along with Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch and other garrison leaders signed a proclamation reaffirming the garrisons’ commitment to the Sexual Harassment and Assault Response Prevention Program.

“Personally, I am committed to safeguarding an environment that is free of sexual assault and sexual harassment,” said Furman. “It is imperative that we create and maintain an organizational climate that promotes inclusion, diversity, human dignity, and respect. This is something that leaders at all levels must commit to.”

While literal steps were taken to support

SAAPM during the march, participants were greeted with informational booths highlight ing services available through Army Community Ser vice, USO and Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers that served the Baumholder military community.

“Though the main focus of the Volksmarch was about SAAPM, I wanted to let the com munity know what other ser vices are offered in Baumholder such as EFMP, RSO and additional SHARP booths,” said Tammy Greene, sexual assault response coordinator. “During SAAPM, there is a con certed effort to acknowledge, honor and pro vide support to survivors of sexual assault who have experienced trauma,” she adds.

Prevention is a team effort that starts with each one of us. Everyone plays a vital role at every level within our units, organizations and communities.

RSOM operations Livorno exemplifies importance of interoperability

LIVORNO, ITALY – The Port of Livorno hosted multiple U.S. Army units that came together to conduct the reception, staging, and onward movement of the 1st Cavalry Division, Division Sustainment Battalion on March 24. The 39th Transportation Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command and 598th Transportation Brigade (Surface Deployment and Distribution Command), 839th Transportation Battalion, with the assistance of 1st Calvary Divion’s Port Support Activity, the Italian Armed Forces, and Livorno Port authorities, facilitated the movement of more than 400 pieces of equipment from the port to multiple forward operating sites across Europe.

Lt. Col. Mike Harrell, commander, 839th Trans BN, who had overall responsibility for the port operation, praised his team’s efforts

and their role in the overall strategic picture.

“These types of operations are very important for us to accomplish not only our national strategic objectives by projecting large-scale combat forces for large combat operations, but also to show our allies our commitment,” said Harrell.

This operation marks the second time this fiscal year that the Port of Livorno has been utilized to bring U.S. military equipment into Italy en route to forward locations across Europe in support of NATO’s deterrence efforts.

Operations officer Capt. Kevin Conley, 839th Trans BN, ensured a safe and efficient operation. He emphasized the importance of this type of mission with our Italian allies.

“This mission increases our interoperability with our host nation partners because the more we use this port, the more they invest in us.” said Conley. “It’s a mutual investment. This will eventually increase our power projection capabilities moving forward.”

According to Conley, interoperability was key to the operation’s success. Every entity involved had a crucial role to play and even the most minute detail was tied to the overall mission success.

This was especially evident to 1st Lt. Izabella Maia, 386th Movement Control Team officer in charge. She stressed how closely she worked with the port stevedores and the Italian supporting entities at Camp Darby, Italy, to account for, and track every piece of equipment coming off the vessel through in-transit visibility until it reaches is final destination in Europe.

The ultimate aim of this type of operation is for the incoming regionally aligned force to become as fully mission-capable, as fast as possible. Maj. Samuel Johnson, the sustainment brigade S4 for the 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade, in charge of the Brigade Port Support Activity, deployed ahead of the main force to oversee and proactively manage his unit’s equipment com-

ing off the vessel.

“The PSA part of this operation is a unitsupplied set of unit movement officers, maintainers, and medics that will come to the port to make sure that our equipment, as it gets off the vessel, is not only identified and confirmed it made the trip okay, but we can also identify maintenance issues,” said Johnson. “So we can identify what we’ll need to do in order to build combat power as we establish our areas of operations.”

Port operations in Livorno demonstrated the need for a combined effort from multiple entities, at multiple echelons, to ensure that the incoming forces get wherever they need to be ready to fight.

“Working with our theater sustainment partners such as the 21st TSC, the 386th MCT, 16th Sustainment Brigade, and all of our partners in the theater has been excellent,” said Conley. “We’ve always had a great working relationship supporting one another in order to accomplish the mission.”

Army has allowed teammate to live his dream on and off the field

“If our flight hadn’t been delayed, we would have been at the terminal when the bomb went off, not exactly in the terminal where it was, but we would have been there,” said Enrique “Tato” Rivera, recalling the day he arrived to work for the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux.

Rivera, an operations specialist with Installation Management CommandEurope, together with his wife and son, were on their way to Zaventem Airport in Brussels on March 22, 2016, when terrorists attacked the airport, killing 32 and injuring more than 300 people.

“When we landed here, we didn’t deplane almost until 3 or 4 in the afternoon. We were on the plane for all those hours, he said. “Thanks to God our flight was delayed an hour and 30 minutes.”

Arriving at USAG Benelux, an assignment in Europe was something Rivera wanted to experience, having not been stationed in Europe throughout the 20 years he served in the Army, prior to retiring in 2015.

“There are so many beautiful places in Europe that you can go out and see,” said Rivera, who followed USAG Benelux working at Army Futures Command, before returning to Europe last July. “That’s one of our goals in our time off, to hit the places that we didn’t have the opportunity to see last time we were here.”

In addition to traveling, Rivera has another off-duty passion that continues to keep him busy — one that stretches back to his youth, growing up in Puerto Rico. He has revived and is coaching the IMCOMEurope softball team, and he also plays for the Wiesbaden travel team.

“I was a member of the all-star military baseball team in 2004 and 2009,” he said. “If you make the team, for six months out of the year, you play baseball.”

The 2009 team played in the U.S. Southern Command Area of Responsibility, which allowed Rivera to play against topflight teams in countries throughout South and Central America.

“And the folks that we played are the professional teams for that country,” he said. “For instance, when we went into the Dominican Republic, the teams that we played are the academies — the Yankees Academy, the Boston Red Sox Academy, the Texas Rangers.”

“Those years when I was there, I’m really glad that my commands let me play. That was one of the greatest parts of my Army career, because I was able to go back to what I was dreaming to be able to do,” said Rivera, who played professionally as a shortstop in Puerto Rico, before joining the Army.

Now Rivera is doing more designated hitting and catching, he said with a smile, while easily describing what he likes most about the shortstop position.

“You can control everything. You’re like the captain of the field,” he said.

According to historical records, about 500,00 people from the Palatinate region emigrated to the United States between 1650 and 1940. Some of the early immigrants settled in the Carolinas, farmers preferred Pennsylvania and grapes growers planted vineyards in California. Others were merchants and sought their fortunes in business centers along the east coast.

The upcoming event from the German American Veterans Initiative (GAVI) on the 27th of April, is something special for the motorcyclists living in the KMC. From 10:30 at the old Stone Quarry in Huetschenhausen (RK-Steinbruch 66882) there will be a bilingual openair church service by German Army Chaplains Alexander Beck and Markus Konrad, and US Rev. Dr. Timothy Carentz from the Kaiserslautern Military Resiliency Center.

One of them was Isidor Straus, born into a Jewish family in the quaint city Otterberg in 1845. In 1854 the family immigrated to the United States, following his father Lazarus, who had left two years earlier.

The Straus family first settled in Columbus, Georgia, and then moved to Talbotton, Georgia. Isidor planned to join the United States Military Academy at West Point when the American Civil War broke out. In 1861 he was elected as officer in a Confederate unit

but was not permitted to serve based on his young age and instead was sent to England to secure ships for blockade running. He worked as an aid to a London based Confederate agent and as a salesman in both London and Amsterdam.

In 1871 Isidor met Rosalie Ida Blun, nicknamed Ida, from Worms along the Rhein River and proposed, promising to travel to Germany with her every year. They had seven children together and it is said that they were very close and highly devoted, while Ida also

adamantly supported her husband’s career.

After the Civil War the family moved to New York City where his father Lazarus convinced Rowland Hussey Macy, founder of the department store, to allow Straus and his sons to open a crockery department in the basement. Isidor worked there and eventually turned the store into a glass and china department. In 1888, he and his brother Nathan became partners of Macy’s and in 1893 they bought a controlling interest in Wechsel and Straus, which they renamed Abraham and Straus. By 1896 they had gained full ownership of R. H. Macy & Co. Isidor became politically engaged and served as a U.S. Congressman from 1894 to 1895 as a Democratic representative of New York’s 15th congressional district. He also became president of the Education Alliance and prominent supporter of charitable and education moves and was strongly interested in civil service reform. He declined the office of Postmaster General, offered to him by U.S. President Grover Cleveland.

When a newly formed Mutual Alliance Trust Company was opened in New York in 1902, he became one of the thirteen directors among William Rockefeller

and Cornelius Vanderbilt.

Living up to his promise of returning to Germany once a year, Isidor always crossed the Atlantic Ocean on German ships. In 1912 he learned about a new and unsinkable vessel by a British shipping company. Advertising luxury and a quicker passage to New York, he and Ida were immediately inspired and boarded the legendary “RMS Titanic” in South Hampton on their return voyage across the sea.

The ship hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and it is reported that Ida refused to leave the ship without Isidor. He, on the other hand, would not get on a lifeboat before all women and children were still aboard. Ida is reported to have said, “I will not be separated from my husband, as we have lived, so will we die, together.” Isidor and Ida were last seen on deck arm in arm, and the scene was described as a most remarkable exhibition of love and devotion, when the “RMS Titanic” sank at 2:20 a.m. that morning. A memorial plaque is mounted at Manhattan’s Macy department store in honor of the valiant couple.

Their great-great granddaughter is known as King Princess, née Mikaela Mullaney Straus, an American singer, songwriter and musician from Brooklyn, New York.

TIME TRAVEL – VIRTUAL REALITY TOUR

APRIL 14, 2:30/4:30 P.M., OTTERBERG

Experience a unique tour that brings history to life in a fascinating way. This covered wagon tour takes you through the monastery in Otterberg on a rustic horse-drawn covered wagon. Using virtual reality goggles, participants immerse themselves in times long past: from the time of the monastery in 1254 to the Walloon town in 1615. The wind in your face, the jerking of the wagon and the clattering of the horses’ hooves allow you to immerse yourself in those times. The highlight of the tour is the atmosphere of the imposing Otterberg Abbey Church with its exciting history. Here, participants experience history live - no longer virtually, but with the real, massive, yellow sandstones that characterize this building. English tours are available on April 14, May 27 and June 22 and start at 2:30 or 4:30 p.m. Individual appointments can be arranged for groups of 9 to max. 11. For further information and booking, visit: https://www.otterbach-otterberg.de/tourismus or Tel. 06301-607800.

HIWWE WIE DRIWWE – THE ROOTS

OF THE PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH

VARIOUS DATES IN KMC MOVIE THEATERS

Two filmmakers from the Palatinate region in Southwest Germany looked for them and found them – the relatives in America. Around 400.000 people live there and not only speak an old form of the Palatine dialect, Pennsylvania (PA) Dutch, but also follow other Palatine habits such as eating pig stomach or hunting Elwetritsche. One of them is the Pennsylvanian-born author and musician Douglas “Doug” Madenford. In the documentary he explores traditions of Palatine culture “hiwwe wie driwwe”, here in Germany and there in the USA. About 300 years ago many people from the Palatinate region fled from political persecution as well as for economic reasons to the USA and settled mainly in and around Pennsylvania. They brought their language and culture to the “New World”. Both have survived to this day in large parts. A second part of the successful documentary (with English subtitles) will be presented in the following movies theaters: Broadway Ramstein April 16, City Cinema KL April 26 and Provinzkino Enkenbach May 6. Producer Benjamin Wagener will be present to meet and greet those interested at all presentations.

FIELD SERVICE WITH MOTORCYCLE BLESSING

APRIL 27, 10:30 A.M.-7 P.M., RK-HEIM/STEINBRUCH, HÜTSCHENHAUSEN

The Reservist Association Westpfalz are organizing a field service with a German style barbecue, drinks, and coffee and cake in the afternoon. During the service motorcycles and their riders will be blessed. The event is also under the motto “We who served” and U.S. veterans, active-duty members and families are invited to attend, whether biker or not. The field service will start at 1:30 p.m. For more information visit: https://www.reservistenverband.de/ .

GARTENMARKT

APRIL 28, 10 A.M.-6 P.M., ABTEIKIRCHE PLAZA, OTTERBERG

Sixty-four vendors will present plants and flowers for garden lovers, handcrafted items out of clay, wood, stone, metal, textile and paper. There will be an information booth about wild bees, culinary delights, a children’s program and the monastery herb and flower garden (behind the church) will be open for visitors. There will be an organ concert at 12.30 a.m., the Blue Light Band Band of the Polizei Presidium Ludwigshafen will perform at 4 p.m., and Günther Mannweiler will entertain visitors with music in the historic district.

STREET FOOD FESTIVAL/TRADE MARKET

APRIL 26-28, CITY CENTER, LANDSTUHL

Enjoy a weekend with your favorites foods and try something new. There will be food trucks with American, German, Mexican favorites, and sweet and hearty desserts to go along with them. Let your mouth water as your meal is freshly prepared right on the spot! On April 27 and 28 there will also be a trade market at Stadthalle and stores will be open for Sunday shopping from 1-6 p.m.

BERLIN from Page 1

are five tips for making the most of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.

Skip the Visitor’s Center

German and American national parks differ in one big way: Driving access to Germany’s national parks is free. While this is great news, the same can’t always be said for visitor centers – most of which charge a fee (€6.50 for adults, in this case) – to enter.

While the Kirchlotheim visitor’s center does look like a flying saucer and has a cool exhibit about trees, it isn’t necessarily a must-see. Entering the park at Kirchlotheim is a good idea, however. Because it puts you on the road to where the real action is.

Stop at the Edersee Dam

Okay, it has to be said: This is a dam good place to stop, especially during the summer. The Edersee Reservoir is Germany’s second largest hydroelectric dam, which is pretty incredible considering it’s more than 100 years old and that this is one of the greenest countries in the world.

You’ll reach it after about 30 minutes of driving from the visitor center. Stop at one of the parkplatzes just before you reach Edersee Dam. Then get out and walk across the dam. It’s a marvelous experience, and not just because the dam wall kind of looks like it belongs on a castle. The view looking out toward the lake is well worth the walk. Best of all, your choice of ice cream and coffee shops awaits you in the little village of Edersee on the other side. Make sure you eat and drink well. You’ll need the sustenance for what’s up next.

Take the Treetop Walk

Germany does love to build hiking trails in the tops of forests, and the Treetop Walk is an excellent one. Located about 15 minutes away from the Edersee Dam, it is open 10

a.m. to 6 p.m. (last admission at 5 p.m.) and is well worth the price of admission (€8.90 for adults and €4.90 for kids aged 4-17).

Though the trail is only 750 meters long, plan to spend at least an hour up there. You’ll find loads of information and pretty much every step you take provides an excellent view (or at the very least, a different perspective). And it also gives you a really nice overview of the place you’ll be heading next.

Explore the Kellerwald

Another short 15-minute drive brings you to Bringhausen. Here, you’ll find jumping-off points for some of the best hikes in the national park (and you’ll get into the

Kellerwald part of the park). For a leisurely stroll, try the Urwaldsteig-Forsthaus loop, which is absolutely gorgeous during almost any season. You’ll wind through quiet forest and along the banks of the Eder. For a slightly (but not much more) strenuous alternative, you can hike south toward Daudenberg, which is a lovely 1,500-foot wooded peak. Or you can just pick a well-marked trail and go. Either way, plan for one to two hours.

Splurge on an Overnight Stay at Waldeck Castle

After all the dam sightseeing, exploring, and treetop walking, why not treat yourself and your loved ones to a night in one of

the most atmospheric hotels in the country? You’ll remember your stay at Waldeck Castle for a lifetime.

Even if you’re not into saunas and fine dining (both of which are available), the views from the hotel are absolutely magnificent. The inside of the castle is pretty epic, too. Plus, you’ll get to spend a little more time in one of Germany’s most beautiful national parks!

Getting to Kellerwald-Edersee National Park

By car, the park is about 2 hours and 45 minutes from Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 45 minutes from Wiesbaden, and 3 hours and 45 minutes from Stuttgart.
