‘Military Brat:’ Do you know where the term comes from?

We’ve all heard the term “military brat” before. It pertains to those children who grew up in military families. “Brats” wear the name like a badge of honor, often because of the moves, stressors and cultural experiences that make them more resilient than their civilian counterparts.

But outside of the military, the word brat is often considered derogative. So it made me wonder — where did the term “military brat” originate?

To find out, I reached out to the folks at National Defense University Libraries, who did some research for me. It turns out the origin of the term is still pretty unclear, but there are a lot of interesting theories behind it, and most of them originate in Britain.

Since we couldn’t find anything definitive, I figured I’d tell you about some of those theories.

BRAT could be an acronym for British Regiment Attached Traveler

I first found this theory published in a 2011 blog by retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael M. Dunn, who was the president of the Air Force Association at the time. Dunn, who had also been

the president of NDU, had asked a researcher to find the origin of the term.

One came through, discovering a book published in 1921

MASTHEAD

that attributed the saying to the British army. It explained “BRAT” as a status standing for British Regiment Attached Traveler, and it was assigned to families who were able to travel abroad with a soldier. Eventually, it just referred to military children. But the term stuck, and was adopted in many places around the world, including in the U.S.

While the researchers I spoke to at NDU couldn’t find that particular citation that Dunn mentioned, it’s a pretty interesting story. And other published researchers have also traced the acronym to the phrase British Regiment Attached Traveler.

Earliest references were from the 18th century

Dr. Grace Clifton, a professor at Open University in the U.K., has done research with the U.S. Army’s Dr. Becky Powell into the origins of the term.

Clifton found reference to a song written in 1707 for a satirical play called “The Recruiting Officer” that described soldier life

and that of their dependents. Back then, married soldiers were divided into two categories: the lucky few who were allowed to have their families live in the barracks and be taken care of by regimental funds, and those whose families had to live outside the barracks. The song referenced the latter as being “brats and wives.”

The lyrics may have been the first reference to brat in relation to military families. But it also may have referred to any children. So, that’s still a bit of a mystery.

A contraction for ‘Barrack Rat?’

Clifton said the term “barrack rat” was also used at the end of the 18th century in the U.K. when discussing stories about the lives of children in army barracks, so it’s possible that the two words were turned into a contraction to create the term brat.

“Barrack rat” also surfaced in “A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English.” It cited the book “Old Soldier Sahib” written in 1936 by Frank Richards, a British soldier who detailed his experiences while stationed in India and Burma during the early 20th century. In that book, Richards said “children born in barracks were referred to as ‘barrack-rats:’ It was a wonder to me how the poor kids survived the heat, and they were washed-out little things.”

Army Brats

Researchers at NDU also told me they were able to trace “Army brat” back to 1942, where it appeared in a military slang publication called “The War Dictionary.” It defined the term specifically in regards to the children of Army officers, and it said the term was one of endearment.

Still no clear-cut answer

Trent University’s Dr. Jennine Hurl-Eamon has also been researching childhood during the wars of the 18th century.

“I must confess that I have come across no archival or early print material as yet that offers a clear indication of how the term ‘brat’ emerged,” she said.

Earth Day 2024 — “Planet vs. plastic”

“Building a sustainable society is the critical challenge of this century. Everything depends on it.”
— Senator Nelson, Founder

The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Over 20 million Americans demonstrated for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. The event was so successful, that in December 1970 Congress authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. As a result, Americans began honoring Earth Day on the 22nd of April every year. In 1990, Earth Day went global in 141 countries and the event continues to spread internationally, providing a powerful focal point from which

people can demonstrate their commitment to being good stewards of the environment. This year, more than 1 billion people in 192 countries worldwide will commemorate “Earth Day.”

Earth Day goals: More than just spreading awareness!

The aim for a clean environment continues with even more urgency, as the possibility of climate change becomes more apparent every day. Scientists worldwide have amassed evidence suggesting that the need to take action now is more important than ever. As we have seen in recent and past news, larger and more frequent natural catastrophes such as floods, storms and other natural catastrophes are occurring, costing millions of lives and destroying the livelihood of even more. If we do not rethink our consumer behavior, we could steer our communities into an ecological crisis. We do not have to give up our lifestyles in order to affect a change; we only need to make

smarter decisions. Small changes in our lifestyle can make a big difference. And everyone can do them without experiencing a significant cut to their day to day business. There is a popular movement toward “sustainable consumerism” occurring in Europe and the U.S., which promotes purchasing goods that are produced with the minimum amount of resource consumed in the production of those goods. A large supermarket provides goods that are grown thousands of miles away, sometimes in a location that requires extensive irrigation. Why not change the demand signal by going to a local farmer’s market? Farmer’s markets require minimal resources in order to produce goods that provide as much, if not more, benefit to the consumer — you. Did you know that many nearby cities, including Kaiserslautern, hold regular farmer’s markets? And there are even more possibilities to easily change the negative impact by doing simple things such as

changing your conventional light bulbs to energy-saving bulbs, such as light emitting diode or compact fluorescent lamp bulbs. These bulbs are more efficient and use 80 percent less energy while lasting up to 10 times longer. Imagine, just replacing 10 bulbs could pay for themselves within one year, saving you about $25 annually, and reducing 14 kg of carbon emissions from being produced by electrical companies each year. Additionally, turning off electronics, or even unplugging them, instead of keeping them on standby, will save both energy and money, as will washing your clothes at a lower temperature to reduce hot water bills. Do you need to use your car for short distances? Walking is healthy and your wallet will be grateful. Finally, did you know that for every degree Celsius less in room temperature, you will consume about 10 percent less energy — again a win/win situation for your wallet and for the environment.

Earth Day 2024 Theme: “Planet vs. plastic”

Each year, Earth Day campaigners call for events with an annual altering theme. In the U.S., the 2024 Earth Day theme is “Planet vs. Plastic.”

Plastics are a serious headache for the planet and more and more governments are proposing measures to reduce their impact on the environment. In fact, in 2021 Europe banned the sale of singleuse plastics such as drinking straws, cutlery or cotton buds within its borders. To put the magnitude of the problem into context, let's review some objective data:

Every year, 500 billion plastic bottles are produced worldwide. (Source: Greenpeace)

Plastic in the ocean is already more than 150 million tons of waste. (Source: European Parliament)

By 2050, oceans could contain

more plastics than fish. (Source: The World Economic Forum)

Each year around eight million tons of plastic ends up in our seas and oceans. (Source: Greenpeace)

While on the subject of singleuse plastics, which account for half of the plastic we use each year, they have an average useful life of 12 to 15 minutes and yet can take up to 500 years to disappear, according to Life Out Of Plastic. Plastics outlive us and will outlive our children. The good news is that it is in our hands, as consumers, to turn this situation around. We have the power to make manufacturers change the way they produce by changing the way we consume. Plastic has become a constant element in our lives. It's everywhere: product packaging, cosmetic ingredients, textiles, mobile phones, etc. Its omnipresence is such that many would find the mere fact of giving it up a difficult task. Reducing the consumption of plastics therefore requires not only a change in habits, but also a change of mindset.

How can you contribute?

• Avoid single-use plastics such as drinking straws

Single-use plastics, such as plates and cutlery made from this material, make our lives easier, but seriously harm the planet. These types of products have viable alternatives and there is an urgent need to choose them.

• If you go shopping, remember to take a cloth bag

We go to the supermarket at least once a week to fill up our fridges. If every time we go we use reusable bags (cloth, string or wicker) the health of our planet will improve. From now on remember to take yours when leaving the house.

• Buy more bulk food and fewer packaged products

Kaiserslautern American Page 6 April 19, 2024

Disposable containers are inundating supermarkets (polystyrene trays, PET bottles, tetra paks, plastic containers, etc.).

But there is an alternative: more and more establishments are offering the possibility to buy in bulk.

• Replace plastic Tupperware for glass or steel containers

If you eat at work, a Tupperware container is part of your day. We suggest you change your routine and opt for glass or stainlesssteel containers. Not only will the planet appreciate it, so will your health because some of these plastic containers can release harmful substances.

• Pay attention and put your plastic waste in the correct recycling container

Our lifestyle sometimes prevents us from paying attention to details. Therefore, when it comes to recycling plastic waste, it can end up in the wrong container.

Before throwing your waste away, think where each item has to go.

• Choose to reuse and give some of the packaging a new purpose

If you have no choice but to buy a plastic bottle or a plastic container at the supermarket, reuse it instead of throwing it away. When cleaned properly, a bottle can be filled up as many times as you like and containers can be used to store other food.

How does the KMC officially celebrate Earth Day 2024?

Beside the tree planting events with elementary school students on Ramstein and tree planting ceremony with 86th AW, 86th CEG Leadership and German Forest Departments, more activities will take place that week from April 22 until 26 on Ramstein. Ramstein Intermediate School students will participate in a guided tour through the base-owned water supply plant, where most of the potable water used at RAB is treated, stored, maintained and controlled. The attendees learn about the technical equipment used to clean and protect this important natural resource!

And don’t forget the official opening of Ramstein’s first informative nature trail through the local forest areas. Please also keep a lookout for daily Earth Day challenges, posted on 86th Civil Engineering Squadron and official Ramstein Air Base Facebook page, for the chance to win some Earth Day swag!

Another great opportunity to demonstrate your environmental stewardship is to recycle during the “clean where you work” and “clean where you live” events. Look out for detail information from you housing office and facility manager.

If you have another event in mind, we are happy to support you putting it into practice, if not for this year’s Earth Day, then definitely for the next!

ABC IN KMC: Mehlinger Heide

A great place to visit, take a stroll, walk your furry friends or just enjoy and discover nature is just around the corner from Sembach and actually linked to the military. The main entrance to the nature reserve is just across the supermarket on road L 401/Kaiserstrasse. Driving on A63 you might not even realize that you’re traversing an amazing natural reserve close by the Sembach exit.

Ramstein Air Base is a member of the Foundation Mehlinger Heide (Mehlingen Heath), initially developed 2002 to fulfil environmental compensation requirements due to a lack of compensation possibilities on the air base itself. At that time many construction projects took place in lieu of the Rhein-Main Transition Program when Rhein-Main Air Base closed and Ramstein became the new “Gateway to Europe” and a new runway was built.

Until 1912 the area around Mehlingen was completely covered with forest. The Army administration in Kaiserslautern was then granted a drill ground at Kleiner Fröhnerhof and in 1938 first

maneuvers took place at Grosser Fröhnerhof. Exercise operations with constant soil damage then fostered the emergence of heather and nature handled the rest. As of 1945 the area was used by French Forces, along with a part utilized by U.S. Armed Forces stationed at Ramstein and Sembach Air Bases.

In 1994 it was decommissioned and returned to the German government. The total area is 410 hectares and 150 hectares are comprised of heather, making it one of the largest heather landscapes in southern Germany. Numerous trails with educational stops along the way invite you to leisure strolls. Band wagon trips

Happy Earth Day!

are offered in the summer and at point “Höhe 325°” you have a panoramic view over the countryside with Donnersberg in the distance. Since 2001 it has been a nature preserve area named “Naturschutzgebiet Mehlinger Heide.”

Countless animals and plants find their natural habitat in the Heide. The natural conditions give way to unique biodiversity as the landscape bears various facets of vegetation, including bushes, grass, sands, shrubbery and heather as well as trees and woods. All these different features are specially united at Mehlinger Heide.

Endangered plants and animals, such as wild bees or endangered birds, have settled here. Even a plant that had been declared extinct in Palatinate, the so-called Wiesen-Leinblatt, has been rediscovered in the area and a special bird that can be found there is called Ziegenmelker (European nightjar). The best time of the year to visit is in August when the heather is in full bloom and gives the landscape a purple glow. But, a stroll is worthwhile year around, colorful wild flowers may pop up in the spring, early fall mornings will transform the area into misty scenery and it and can be especially exciting after snowfall

when the landscape turns sugarpowdery white.

The heath also has a “small sister” on Ramstein Air Base. In 2008 two large ponds (Kilo Pond and Par Pond) in the airfield were backfilled due to BASH threat (Bird/Wildlife Aircraft Strike Hazard) and afterwards seven hectares were seeded and mulched with material gained from Mehlinger Heide. This is the safest vegetation in respect to BASH and requires low maintenance, where mowing is only necessary every two to three years. Additional grounds adjacent to the flight line are scheduled to be seeded in 2024.

The Kaiserslautern Military Community unveiled its brand new Housing Office on Vogelweh Military Complex, April 10. This significant design will enhance services for over 56,000 of the community’s residents.

The $7.5 million project commenced planning in the fall of 2020 and saw groundbreaking in April 2022. The design transformed the Housing Office into a hub of support and service for military personnel and their families as well as providing customers with an easier location to access its resources.

With the aid of multiple units in the community, the Housing Office has undergone a huge metamorphosis. Equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and innovative features, the revamped facility extends beyond administrative functions. From facilitating lease agreements, arranging temporary furniture for newcomers, managing permanent furniture and resolving rental disputes throughout their stay, the office is important to every aspect of community life.

“The Housing Office is not just a building; it’s the heart and soul of our community,” remarked

Colonel Steven Thomas, 86th Civil Engineer Group commander, during the unveiling ceremony. “It serves as a lifeline for those who come to the KMC, providing essential support from the moment they arrive until they depart.”

The renovated facility was designed with enhancements to streamline operations and better the overall experience for residents. Sound-dampening panels, large windows and modern desks provide a more productive work environment for Housing Office personnel. While additional parking, a dedicated kids’ room, and accessibility features ensure inclusivity and convenience for visitors.

As the community celebrates the newly-minted housing office, gratitude abounds for all those who contributed to turning the vision of a revitalized Housing Office into reality. From the planners and architects to the construction crews and support staff, each played a crucial role in bringing this project to fruition.

“This renovation isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s about investing in the well-being of our community and ensuring that every member feels supported and valued,” said Colonel Thomas, “Together, we’ve built more than just a building; we’ve built a home.”

Morón AB hosts BTF from Dyess

Members of the 496th Air Base Squadron are hosting Bomber Task Force 24-2 at Morón Air Base, Spain, beginning March 20, to help integrated training efforts between Spanish and American militaries.

Four U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer aircraft, Airmen and equipment assigned to Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, are forward deployed to Morón AB for the BTF, which provides an opportunity to build Ally and partner capacity while improving effectiveness and interoperability across the European theater.

Airmen assigned to the 496th ABS are charged with providing the same level of support expected from any other wing or group. Since the 9th EBS’s arrival, the 496th ABS has aided with flight planning, airfield operations, logistical support such as lodging and meals and other installation support.

“We are resilient and quick on our feet, no matter how big of a project or mission,” said Master Sgt. Shanara

Crosby, 496th ABS airfield manager. “My team is able to work through challenges and provide the support needed, regardless of any limited resources.”

Training with Allied and partner nations forges the enduring and strategic relationships necessary to confront a broad range of global challenges.

“The BTF allows us to deploy to forward locations to integrate with local forces so we can learn local procedures, airspace, integrate with our Allies and partners and understand the operational environment better,” said Lt. Col. Ryan Stillwell, 9th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron commander. “We integrate with our Allies and partners in the area of responsibility to practice some of the key skill sets that we would need in future conflict, to prevent that conflict and to assure our allies that we will be there for them.”

The U.S. is dedicated to security commitments to the NATO Alliance and routinely operates across the globe, remaining flexible and agile to respond to the changes in the operational environment.

USAG RP recognizes Military Youths of the Year competing for state title

photos by

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz hosted a Military Youth of the Year reception at the Landstuhl Youth Center on April 5 to recognize two youths from the Baumholder and Kaiserslautern Military Communities.

The Baumholder Youth Center’s MYOY, Keandre Anderson, and Landstuhl Youth Center's MYOY Nijel K. Johnson-Dwyer (representing Kaiserslautern area) will be traveling to Naples, Italy, to compete for the State Military Youth of the Year title April 18-21.

The teen selected to be the National Youth of the Year serves as a role model, leader, and advocate for the almost 4 million youth supported by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America annually, while also serving as leaders for young people across America.

“While struggling with personal hurdles in life, which felt like an invisible weight on my shoulders, the social aspect of the Youth Center was key to my personal growth and recovery,” said Nijel, an 8th grader at Ramstein Middle School. “In a military community where people come and go it was hard for me to initially make friends, I felt like everybody was on a time limit… but later I realized I was looking at the situation the wrong way, because meaningful connections can last a long time, regardless of where we are all located on a map.”

Nijel is an advocate for mental health, taking a stance to normalize conversations amongst youth and adults centered around sensitive mental health topics. His goal is to make a lasting impact for mental health awareness across the world, blazing a path for other teens and young people to seek community resources and reach out for assistance when needed.

“Oftentimes, vulnerability is shunned or cast out rather than expressed — which is a great shame as it brings no one comfort to hide

their real emotions,” Nijel said. “This is why I have been encouraging youth and others to speak out about their mental health and struggles, as I want them to know, it is ok to NOT be ok.”

Keandre, a sophomore at Baumholder High School, spent the last 13 years of his life in BGCAaffiliated programs, attending the Child Development Center, the School Age Center, and more recently the Youth Center.

“Both of my parents were working and our family was living off-base, so the Youth Center turned out to be the only place I had for making connections,” said Keandre. “Connection is one of the seven seas of resiliency, and it helps you have a sense of belonging — a very important factor in the military community, as there’s a lot of movement going around.”

Keandre actively participates in various programs at Baumholder Child and Youth Services and, through his involvement with the Keystone Club, has volunteered nearly 500 hours at local and Garrison-wide community events, contributing significantly to

the maintenance of the Baumholder Youth Center’s Legacy Level Charter. He has also collaborated closely with the UPS Safe Driving Program and is currently utilizing grant funds from BGCA to develop a driving simulator for the youth program.

“My goal is to get the number of teen driving deaths down, and that starts with offering younger drivers an opportunity to practice safe driving skills at no cost,” he said.

Keandre expressed how much personal growth he has gained through the Youth Center and encouraged others to get involved with the different available activities.

“My flame is scorching, and I am hoping to pass the torch to others and help them to see the opportunities they have,” he said.

Keandre and Nijel were both presented garrison coins by Col. Reid Furman, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, and Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch, garrison sergeant major.

“The process of becoming Military Youth of the Year teaches leadership,

a skill that will be valuable wherever you go in your lives,” said Furman. “Leadership is about driving change and identifying the things that need to be changed, and you are both doing that. I know your families are very proud.”

The Military Youth of the Year program, introduced in 2013 as a unique component of the Youth of the Year program, aims to acknowledge exceptional teenagers who are part of the youth community centers affiliated with BGCAs on U.S. military bases around the world.

Each year, six finalists are selected from local, state, and regional contests to represent youth centers across six regions: Overseas, Northeast, Southeast, Pacific, Midwest, and Southwest United States. The winner from each region, including the Regional Military Youth of the Year, advances to the National Youth of the Year Celebration. The MYOY joins the five winners from non-military

Boys & Girls Clubs to compete for the prestigious title of National Youth of the Year, as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national teen spokesperson.

“The lessons you are learning about leadership will always be valuable to you and everyone around you,” Furman said. “I hear it clearly from both of you today — it’s evident in the work you are doing, you are already leaders.”

The day’s event also served as an opportunity to officially recognize April as the Month of the Military Child as well as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Furman and Wrensch signed a proclamation for each.

It’s true — Carrots, other vegetables can help you see in dark

Have you ever heard that carrots are good for your eyes, or that they can help you see in the dark?

It’s true — carrots are rich in the compound beta carotene, which your body uses to make a form of vitamin A that helps your eyes adjust in the dark.

That’s just one of the important links between Vitamin A and eye health. Vitamin A is critical for our ability to see, according to a recent report from the Defense Health Agency’s Vision Center of ExcellenceVision Center of Excellence website in Falls Church, Virginia.

“There are many factors that affect your eyes and vision, including genetics and age,” said Maria Viswanathan, ophthalmologist at the VCE. “Adequate amounts of Vitamin A can help prevent the development of night blindness and slow age-related decline in sight.”

With low vitamin A levels, the eye is unable to send visual signals to the brain. This can result in night blindness as an initial symptom. “High doses of vitamin A supplementation can potentially prevent vision loss,” according to the VCE.

Vitamin A supports more than just eye health. It is important for the function of the immune system and reproductive systems. It also contributes to healthy heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs, according to the VCE.

Vitamin A also boosts the immune system by stimulating the production and activity of white blood cells. It’s an antioxidant that can prevent or slow damage to cells.

Additionally, vitamin A has a role in prevent-

ing inflammation and can help prevent inflammatory conditions like acneVitamin A as an antiinflammatory agent page on the NIH National Library of Medicine website.

But the human body cannot make vitamin A on its own, so we rely on the food we consume to help jump start the creation of vitamin A. The pigment beta carotene is a major driver of vitamin A production.

Beta carotene is found in many vegetables. It is the nutrient that gives yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables their color. That includes carrots, cantaloupes, apricots, sweet potatoes, mangoes, pumpkins, and papayas. Beta carotene is also found in green, leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and collards (even though the color of those vegetables is determined by a different chemical known as chlorophyll).

Beta carotene is also necessary for proper bone growth and development.

In immune health, beta carotene plays a key role in maintaining our body’s defenses. It also keeps male and female reproductive systems healthy. During pregnancy, it ensures embryos grow and develop normally.

How much Vitamin A do we need?

“We should ensure that we have the right amount of vitamin A,” said Viswanathan. “Too little or too much can have negative effects on your health.”

However, the amount of vitamin A people need depends on their gender and age, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary SupplementsVitamin A as an anti-inflammatory agent page on the NIH National Library of Medicine website. The average daily recommended amount for every individual is measured in micrograms of retinol activity equivalents, a metric known as RAE.

The NIH recommends adult females get 700 mcg RAE, while adult males should get 900 mcg RAE daily. Pregnant and breastfeeding women need 770 mcg RAE and 1,300 mcg RAE respectively, according to the NIH.

Although vitamin A deficiency is uncommon in the developed world, it can occur in individuals who have cystic fibrosis, pancreatic insufficiency, chronic liver disease, short bowel syndrome, Crohn’s or celiac disease, giardiasis, chronic diarrhea, highly selective dieting, dysphagia, mental illness, or who are bariatric surgery recipients, according to the VCE report.

Premature infants also tend to have low levels of vitamin A in their first year.

A simple blood test will let your health care provider know if you’re getting enough vitamin A. But, generally, consuming a diet rich in nutritious and varied fruits, vegetables, dairy, grains, and proteinUSDA MyPlate website should meet your body’s needs for vitamins and minerals for optimal health and readiness.

“Research is ongoing to evaluate the effects of vitamin A on prevention and/or treatment of various infectious diseases,” said Dr. Cecilia Mikita, a staff allergist and immunologist at the Walter Reed National Military Medical CenterWalter Reed National Military Medical Center website in Bethesda, Maryland.

“Vitamin A plays an important role in both innate and adaptive immune responses, specifically the integrity of the skin barrier and regulation of the differentiation, maturation, and function of numerous immune cells,” she said.

For more information, or if you’re concerned about your vitamin A levels, talk to your health care provider.

1. Steiff Bear Museum

The Steiff Bear Museum’s interactive tour will be a learning experience for both children and adults. The museum itself has been designed like the iconic Steiff button. Located in Giengen an der Brenz, 120 km from Stuttgart, the museum houses the original bears created by Margaret Steiff from 1893.

Travel Tip: Steiff teddy bears are collectible toys made from plush materials. If the prices at the museum tend to be stiff, purchase them online instead.

2. Bäckerei Striffler

Take a tour of Rothenburg’s oldest bakery, Bäckerei Striffler or Striffler’s Bakery, and enjoy their breads, pastries, pies and other baked goods which are all freshly-made from recipes handed down through generations.

Travel Tip: A 4th-generation Striffler baker is always more than willing to do a demonstration of pretzel-making, especially for children.

3. Neuschwanstein Castle

See the inspiration behind the castle of Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty. Neuschwanstein Castle was built by Ludwig II of Bavaria, the “Fairytale King,” in honour of his favourite composer, Richard Wagner, with many of the interiors of the rooms designed with Wagner’s opera characters in mind.

Travel Tip: Remember to get the Neuschwanstein Castle commemorative coin to bring back home.

4. Europa Park

Germany’s largest park is 68-hectares of more than a hundred attractions which both adults and children can enjoy immensely. Located in Germany’s southwest region of Rust between Strasbourg, France, and Freiburg, Europa Park has themed hotels and 11 roller coasters including the Alpenexpress, a powerful coaster guaranteed to make the children scream with delight when it speeds its way through the shafts of a diamond mine.

Travel Tip: Discounted ticket pack-

ages are available and the entry fee is cheap. The adults can enjoy the Gladiator Stuntshow, the Varieté Show with acrobatics, dancing and magic illusions, and the Ice-Show.

5. Olympiapark

Designed in 1972 for the 20th Olympics held in Munich, Olympiapark’s different athletic areas – swimming pool, Olympic stadium, and ice skating rink, among others — are still being used, by tourists, this time.

Travel Tip: Adventurous children and adults can do the roof-climb, a tour on the Olympic Stadium’s rooftop covering.

6. Chocolate Museum

Young and old alike can satisfy their sweet tooth in the Chocolate Museum of Cologne. Made of aluminium and glass, the museum is a showcase of the chocolate’s

3,000-year-old culture with exhibitions of the history of chocolate from its beginnings as “drink for the gods” in ancient Aztec and Mayan cultures, to its pre-eminent status today as energy fuel disguised as candy.

Travel Tip: You and your family can dip waffles provided by the museum into the chocolate fountain, which measures 10 feet in height, for a taste of the delicious chocolate. A selection of German chocolates is available at the shop inside the museum.

7. Volkswagen Factory

The largest automobile plant in the world is that of the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, an hour’s ride from Berlin. This gigantic car museum has displays of the various Volkswagen cars throughout the years, driving courses for both adults and children, a hotel and a restaurant.

Travel Tip: The children will be fascinated by the all-glass elevator that takes visitors to the top of Car Tower, with a height of 160 feet, as well as more than 800 Volkswagen cars in actual production.

8. Hotel Schloss Waldeck

The imposing fortress high above Edersee Lake used to be a castle in the 1100s before it became a hotel, the home of the counts of Waldeck. Your children will be delighted with the tour of the castle’s kitchens using torchlights, the excursions to the surrounding area of the Edersee and fireworks displays.

Travel Tip: Stay for two days and save up on money by dining in the hotel’s two restaurants which serves banquets featuring authentic medieval recipes.

9. Haribo Gummy Bear Factory

Were you even aware that the gummy bear candy you ate as a child was made

in Germany? Haribo’s gummy bears were manufactured in Bonn in 1920 and has since become the world’s largest producer of gummy sweets. While visitors to the factory are not allowed, you and your family can visit the original Haribo factory just beside the factory store, that has an exhibit which chronicles the history of Haribo.

Travel Tip: The gummy sweets are a whole lot cheaper than the ones sold in candy shops and food stores.

10. Senckenberg Naturmuseum

One of the biggest exhibitions of the largest dinosaur skeletons in Europe is at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum, or the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History in Frankfurt. Egyptian mummies and fossil amphibians are only some of the thousands of exhibits found at the museum.

Travel Tip: The museum’s shop has miniature stuffed toy dinosaurs, a large selection of literature natural history topics, and the popular Senckenberg fan t-shirts (discounts may be requested when purchasing in bulk).

Guidance for traveling in Germany

A stay of two weeks in Germany with the proper travel insurance in a reasonablypriced accommodation can spell the difference between memorable and frustration. Quite frankly, a few days will not allow you to see the beauty, culture, attractions, entertainment, or taste and savour the food (sausages) and beverages (lager), of Germany. Maximize time with your family by making wise decisions on your itinerary. Choose accommodation that has proximity to museums and other places of history and culture, restaurants, travel insurance offices, churches, the cinemas, pharmacies, hospitals, and police stations.
