Beginning the discussion: Ramstein takes tactical pause by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing and mission partners participated in an Air Force-directed resiliency tactical pause on Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 30. Approximately 5,800 Airmen, U.S., and local national civilians assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing began the day by attending an all call with Brig. Gen. Mark August, 86th AW commander. Personnel then broke off to attend their own squadron-directed itineraries for the day, including discussion groups and outdoor activities. At the all call, August explained that the pause comes as a proactive measure against suicide, and he imparted a story of a difficult time in his life. “I don’t often share this story, but my brother was my best friend,” August said. “He was the best man at my wed-
ding and the godfather to my sons. I’ll never forget the day I got the phone call that he was killed in Iraq by an IED.” August talked about coping with loss and preparing for those times before they come. Resiliency, he said, is about
finding ways to connect to each other so that Airmen have a support system when hard times come. “This day is designed for all organizations across the Air Force to pause just for a few moments and understand

some of the stressors in each one of our lives,” August said earlier in the week. He explained his perspective on the source of those stressors by summing up three generations in today’s Air Force. The first, he said, is the generation he joined: the post-Desert Storm and pre-9/11 world. Their focus was deterrence and their thoughts were on the high-end fight, and they were thrust into leadership roles once 9/11 happened. The second generation, August said, are the Airmen who joined after 9/11. Those Airmen were motivated by a surge of patriotism and the chance to serve their nation. That generation is serving in leadership today. The last generation August described are those who joined after 2012, when Iraq and Afghanistan were winding down. See PAUSE, Page 2

Initially, the C-130J Super Hercules came in with 10 discrepancies, but during 12 days of isochronal checks, the team ended up finding approximately 145 more issues. “The aircraft reached a remarkably rare zero defect condition that is commonly known as ‘black letter’,” said Staff Sgt. Rendon reminded members of the post-9/11 generation that the challenges of deployment during their time were not the same as now. Today’s Airmen have different experiences, are under different expectations and face a different deterrence posture than more experienced leaders in their developmental years. “And if you’re in that
September 6, 2019 younger category with about seven years of experience or less, recognize that it’s difficult to near-impossible for us to relate with your experiences today,” Rendon said. “I ask you to help us. Teach us.” Rendon explained that the tactical pause is all about giving Airmen and leadership a chance to begin that discussion.

He encouraged personnel to provide continuous feedback or ideas through their chain of command or first sergeants. “We’re looking forward to getting feedback from the field as to what’s working for our Airmen as we tackle this resiliency challenge,” August said.

LAJES FIELD, PORTUGAL A 65th Civil Engineer Squadron Airman was honored as the Airlifter of the Week on Aug. 22. Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, flew to Lajes Field, Portugal, to preside over the 65th Air Base Group change of command. Before heading back to Ramstein Air Base, he recognized the accomplishments of Master Sgt. Twyla Sears, 65th CES electrical power production noncommissioned officer in charge. Sears was selected as one of the project officers for the 65th ABG change of command ceremony and distinguished visitors’ visit. “She flawlessly synchronized the bed-down and movement of personnel in a remote location with limited support capability,” said Senior Master Sgt. Craig Hunter, 65th CES superintendent. “Her expertise in protocol proved invaluable to the 86th AW command team, support personnel, and leadership at Lajes Field.” Hunter went on to say that

Sears, a Bakersfield, California native, leads a nine-man team of generator specialists and is the subject matter expert in power production and aircraft arresting systems on Lajes Field. Sears was instrumental in keeping dozens of generators and BAK-12 arresting systems fully operational. The latter is used on runways to
slow fighter aircraft in emergency situations. Sears’ expertise ensures Lajes Field continues to support the Air Force mission and provide expeditionary movement of fighters in support of
NATO operations. Hunter said Sears stands out amongst her peers and is a true mentor to the NCOs she serves with. Sears has two adult-age children, a granddaughter, and her spouse is a
retired Air Force veteran. The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World’s Best Wing.

Until mid-September, new rainwater drainage will be built in Parkstrasse and Tulpenstrasse by the Kaiserslautern urban drainage system. Public Health Command Europe recommends MMR vaccine screening by Michelle Thum Regional Health Command Europe Due to an increased prevalence of measles and mumps in Europe, Public Health Command Europe officials are recommending that military community members ensure their measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines are up to date. Children in the United States typically receive the MMR vaccine at 12 months, and a second dose at approximately four years of age. However, PHCE officials recommend a more aggressive vaccination schedule for children of service members and civilians living in Europe, due to the increased likelihood of exposure to both mumps and measles. Adults and children older than 12 months require two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine. The first is given at 12 months of age and the second as soon as practical at least four weeks later. In addition to these two shots, children under 12 months of age should receive an addi-

tional dose to protect them until their 12-month-old shot. “Mumps and measles are more common here [Europe] than in the United States which is why the vaccine schedule in Europe is more aggressive,” said Col. Rodney Coldren, Chief of Preventive Medicine at Public Health Command Europe. “Children and

Former AF IDMT recognized for first responder efforts in alpine coaster accident Story & photo by Airman 1st Class Taylor Slater 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For Nedjet Martinez, saving others is instinct. The former Air Force staff sergeant and certified nurse said she was riding on an alpine coaster with her family June 29 in Oberammergau, Germany, when the coaster in front of her came to a sudden halt, causing a woman to collide into her husband’s back and break her arm. Martinez said her first inclination was to jump up and help the victim, Theresa Horne, right away, but the seatbelts remained locked in place. She later said it was more of a blessing because it allowed her to collect her thoughts and recall her medical training. “In my head I started going through things,” Martinez said. “‘Okay. What do you do when you first get on the scene? Check her pulse. Do we need a tourniquet?’ I prepared myself beforehand, kind of all worked it out in my head until finally I got released.” Martinez said she jumped into action as soon as she was released from the seat, helped Horne to a nearby hut and assessed her wounds. Martinez said this was where her Air Force training as an independent duty medical technician came into play, as she helped Master Sgt. Jorge Arce, 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron first sergeant, administer first aid. “We were cohesive,” Martinez said. “We knew what each other needed to do and we worked together like that.
He’s holding the arm, I’m talking to her, I’m doing little checks and stuff while I’m talking to her.” Martinez stressed that keeping the patient from going into shock is crucial in emergency situations, and keeping herself calm was key in making sure Horne kept calm. “I spent a lot of time outside my comfort zone in my life,” Martinez said. “And that really taught me to be resilient. I feel like that part helped me share this resiliency with this person in a stressful situation.” Through her experiences as an IDMT in the Air Force, Martinez said she was able to tell Horne exactly what was going to happen to her when the doctors arrived and helped calm her down until she eventually was evacuated by helicopter. Today, Horne is still working on regaining full control of her arm, but Martinez said she is still in contact with her and after numerous surgeries she is using physical therapy to help the healing process. On August 15, Martinez was recognized and coined for her first responder efforts by Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto J. Rendon Jr., 86th AW command chief. Martinez said the moment was a surprise and very emotional for her. “I was doing what I was supposed to do,” she said. “It’s that instinct, you know? So being recognized for being who I am meant a lot to me.” Martinez said she plans to continue on with her efforts to help the less fortunate. She is currently studying

to obtain her doctorate from Baylor University as a nurse midwife with a focus on underserved communities. “I’m not a perfect person,” Martinez said. “I have chips and scratches everywhere, so to speak. But man, if it wasn’t for those scars, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. And it’s very
important for me to share that with my children and my community.” Martinez also includes the Air Force in her community as well. “It’s still my Air Force community,” Martinez said. “Even though I’ve been out four years. It will always be my family.”

Herrstein holds its farmers, artisan market
by Jutta Lausberg-Saam 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Herrstein will hold its 32nd annual farmers and artisan market tomorrow and Sunday. The fest is categorized as the “most beautiful market in the Rhineland-Palatinate.” The official opening will take place at 10 a.m. in the center of town. Herrstein will return to medieval times, when potters, glassblowers, soap makers, basketmakers, turners, dressmakers, rope makers, felters, bag makers, gold- and silversmiths, brush makers, dyers, blacksmiths and many more skilled craftsmen show off their goods. Farmers will offer homemade
delicacies including bread, sausages, cheese, vegetables, fruits, honey and herbs. Visitors will also find incense, drinking horns, furs, glass beads, jewelry made from old silverware, historical garments and handmade ropes. Spectators, young and old, can watch a blacksmith make tools or knives, and can forge something under his guidance. A turner demonstrating his craft in a medieval way enriches the market. With his help, children get to experience woodturning. Youngsters will also be able to enjoy a puppet theater, participate in the big red dragon, walking the market streets and listen to exciting stories told in the “Drachen-Theater,” the dragon theater. A historic merry-
go-round, archery, and horse riding will also be entertaining the young visitors. Jugglers Hubertus and Kunibert will show off their talents with juggling and admire the market events walking around on stilts. Above all the hustle and bustle, lies the scent of roasted almonds, Hungarian “Langosch,” delicious flatbreads and wine and beer. Musical players “Si vinum musica” and jugglers Jeremias and Thelonius Dilldapp will entertain spectators with live music played on historic instruments. On both days, at 2, 3, and 4 p.m., the organist Thomas Diedrich will play cheerful, contemplative and curi-
ous music on the organ in the historical castle church. On Saturday, at 9 p.m., the duo “Jomamakue” will ignite the night with a big fire spectacle. For 40 minutes, visitors will be captivated by the fascination of the fire show. The market will be open tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Herrstein can be found approximately 30 kilometers north of Baumholder and 70 kilometers north of Ramstein Air Base and Kaiserslautern. World’s biggest wine fest takes place Sept. 6 to 16
The traditional “Wurstmarkt,” known as the world’s biggest wine fest, will start today only 35 kilometers east of Kaiserslautern. For the 603rd time, Bad Duerkheim along the German Wine Street will host this annual fest in two parts: from today to Tuesday and then again from Sept. 13 to 16. Organizers expect about 600,000 visitors from all over the world. An amusement park with
about 300 vendors and ride owners will be set up on the 45,000 square meter fest grounds, next to the “Duerkheimer Fass,” the world’s biggest wine barrel. This barrel actually houses a restaurant and if it was used as a barrel, it could hold 1.7 million liters of wine. The Wurstmark, meaning sausage fair, received its name from the fact that the fest goers ate enormous amounts of sausage during the event in the first part of the 19th century. However, the main

attraction of the fest are 36 little wine tents called “Schubkarchstaende,” wheelbarrows, because vintners rolled wine barrels on wheelbarrows up to “Monte Sancti Michaeli,” Michelsberg hill to quench pilgrims thirst in the 15th century. Each year at the end of September on Michael’s day, pilgrim’s visited the little chapel on top of the hill. On the way up there, vendors sold their goods. Then church dignitaries no longer accepted this kind of pilgrimage. Market activities were relocated to the bottom of Michelsberg, and the “sausage fair” was born. In the year 1910, city officials decided to celebrate the fest earlier in September and no longer on Michael’s day, because of better weather. In 1926, the Wurstmarkt got extended by a day, in 1951
by seven, and finally in 1965, the fest was extended by eight days. Since 1985, the fest is nine days long. Wurstmarkt will begin at 5 p.m. today with a concert in front of the Kurhaus (official spa building). At 5:30 p.m., a parade with musicians, vintners and officials will lead from the Kurhaus to the festival grounds, where the Wurstmark officially opens at 6 p.m. Rides will include merrygo-rounds, auto scooters, a giant Ferris wheel, a rollercoaster, and fast rides such as Break Dance, High Impress, Hot Shot, The King, Ghost Rider and Polyp XXL. A highlight at this year’s Wurstmarkt is the “Gladiator.” It is one of the highest transportable rides of the world. The historical wine tents will open at 10 a.m. and the rides at noon each day. The event’s first fireworks display is scheduled for 9 p.m. Sept. 10, and the second one will close out the fest 9 p.m. Sept. 16. Trains are available to give visitors the chance to leave their cars at home. They run from Kaiserslautern to Bad Duerkheim about every 30 minutes until 6 p.m., then trains travel every hour. Passengers have to change trains in Neustadt.
