In honor of Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Day, a former prisoner of war came to Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 16, to share his experience and visit one of his last duty stations before he retired. At the time of becoming a prisoner of war Retired Maj. Pete Camerota was a Captain assigned to the 22nd Bomb Squadron, 22nd Bomb Wing, at what was then designated as March Air Force Base, California. He was forced to eject from his B-52 over Vietnam on Dec. 22, 1972. “My very first thought when my

parachute opened was, ‘Oh my God, I’m hanging in the straps here, and Joy, my wife, is 10,000 miles away from home and she’s pregnant,’” said Camerota. Camerota then did what he was trained to do and checked the functionality of his parachute and looked for a place to land. Camerota evaded his captors for 12 days before being apprehended, after suffering from dehydration and malnourishment. “I absolutely believe the Survival, Evade, Resistance, and Escape training I went through was a big help,” said Camerota. by Specialist Ryan Lucas 173rd Airborne Brigade With Saber Junction’s joint, multinational airborne operation fast approaching, the riggers of the 173rd Brigade, Support Battalion, 173rd Airborne Brigade are efficiently packing parachutes and rigging heavy equipment to drop into Hohenfels Training Area. Saber Junction 2019 is an exercise involving nearly 5,400 participants from 16 ally and partner nations at the U.S. Army’s Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels Training Areas, Sept. 3-30. Before being placed in solitary confinement, Camerota was interrogated constantly and was encouraged to cooperate to receive a more favorable treatment. “In a survival situation you resist as much as you can without getting yourself hurt,” said Camerota. “I was already
exhausted and had fallen asleep by accident during one line of questioning, then I realized I could feign sleep as a resistance tool.” Camerota was released during Operation Homecoming March 29, 1973, and was briefly hospitalized to recover from injuries at March AFB. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor decoration for his courage and selflessness during his time in Vietnam. After being released and reunited

with his wife, Camerota was still committed to service and wanted to go to pilot training. He credits his wife for being an amazing support system, allowing him to stay in the Air Force and pursue his career goals even though they both had just gone through a traumatic ordeal. “My wife’s support was as important to me as the Air Force was,” said Camerota. “The Air Force let me do what I could do. My career path was set and worked out very well for me and
my family.” Camerota continued his career in aviation, eventually spending his last assignment as a C- 21A pilot instructor pilot, mission coordination and safety officer with the 58th Military Airlift Squadron at Ramstein from 19841987. In the U.S., National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday in September. It honors those who were prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action.

Germans celebrate Reunification Day

Germans will celebrate Reunification Day on Thursday, Oct. 3. It is a Germany-wide holiday and stores, government offices and schools will be closed. Originally, Nov. 9 was intended as the national holiday. On that day in 1989,
the Berlin Wall fell. However, since the date is already dedicated to the commemoration of the Reichskristallnacht, “night of broken glass“ in 1938 and the Hitler-Ludendorff coup in 1923, the starting point for the day of the official reunification of Germany was chosen as Oct. 3, 1990. Before that, Germany was separated for more than 40 years: In the West there was the Federal Republic of Germany, in the East the German Democratic
Republic. October 3 was not always the German national holiday. From 1954 to 1989, June 17 was celebrated as a national holiday in the Federal Republic of Germany. On that day, Germans commemorated the uprising of many workers in the German Democratic Republic in 1953. They demonstrated for more freedom and better living conditions. The uprising was crushed by the police and army. From 1949 to 1989, the German Democratic Republic,
celebrated “Republic Day” on Oct. 7 due to the foundation of the German Democratic Republic on that day in 1949. The national holiday is officially celebrated every year on Oct. 3. The official celebration usually takes place in the state capital of the federal state, which at that time is chaired by the Federal Council. This year, from Oct. 2-3, the city of Kiel will be the host with the motto, Mut verbindet, “courage connects.”

Priscila Castro. “I take a lot of pride in what I do, because it’s very important.” Working alongside ally and partner nations, riggers of the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion operate at the ground level of interoperability. With 16 ally and partner nations participating alongside each other, the success of the exercise will depend on the ability of the partner militaries to trust one another’s proficiency and competence. Spc. Tritavious Jones, who has
jumped out of an airplane with a parachute packed by a rigger from an ally, understands this well. “We had never seen those chutes before,” said Jones, reflecting on his experience packing parachutes and jumping alongside Italian and British paratroopers. The task entrusted to the rigger is a crucial one. Understanding the importance of their job, they treat every training exercise as if it were a real-world mission. To them, there is no difference. “My responsibility is to always
Page 3 make sure that the parachute is ready to open whenever a paratrooper jumps out of the aircraft,” said Spc. Ashley Torres. After all of the equipment and the paratroopers have jumped into Hohenfels Training Area, a recovery team of riggers will be there to collect the gear that will not be required for the remaining days of Saber Junction. As he rigged a Ground Mobility Vehicle, Spc. Dachon Grant said. “When everything lands and everything is okay, it feels good that we actually did it right, as always.”

Kirsten Brandes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airman 1st Class Kamil Roginski, a material handling equipment journeyman with the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron, was recognized as Airlifter of the Week, Sept. 19. Roginski was selected to travel to Sanem, Luxembourg, to support the 86th Material Maintenance Squadron’s war reserve material mission. In nine days, he updated 10 time compliance technical orders, inspected 5,500 items and reduced the vehi-
cle inspection backlog by 40 percent. Roginski was also hand-selected from his squadron to attend two advanced cargo loader maintenance courses. With the knowledge he gained, Roginski then authored two new training plans for personnel in 7-level training, reducing upgrade training time by 50 percent. U.S. Air Force Col. Matthew S. Husemann, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto J. Rendon, 86th AW command chief, stopped by the 86th VRS to commend Roginski for his efforts.
“Not only did you support the VRS, but you went to Luxembourg to help our partners,” said Husemann to Roginski. “What you were able to do in Luxembourg to make sure their vehicles are ready was amazing.” Staff Sgt. Jordan Pelc, 86th VRS noncommissioned officer in charge of material handling equipment maintenance, nominated Roginski because of his dedication to progress. “We sent Roginski up to Spangdahlem to take an advanced class on our 25,000 and 60,000 pound cargo loaders,” said Pelc. “When he
came back, he took the time to look over our training plans and modernized them.” Roginski, a Brooklyn, NY, native, said the recognition of his efforts reaffirms his role in his squadron. “I like teaching, and I like passing on information,” Roginski said. “It feels like you work for something, and it comes back to you.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through their hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the “World’s Best Wing.”

There are four big things to consider when you or your Airmen are considering taking supplements. 1.) Supplements are not regulated by the government. The FDA doesn’t take a supplement off the shelf until enough adverse reactions have been reported by product users. This means, if a harm-

ful product enters the market, and a military member happens to take the unregulated supplement because they didn’t do adequate research, it could potentially cause severe health issues. “Lots of supplement companies can generate a supplement at very low cost without testing the ingredients to make sure they are safe,” said Seville. It is important to always check all ingredients and side effects before taking a supplement. 2.) Just because a product is sold on base, doesn’t mean it’s safe. There are products out there that don’t list all of their ingredients on the label, leaving the consumer uninformed. “If it’s sold on base, then it’s assumed to be a safe product, and I would say that most are, but there are
so many supplements for sale; and it’s on the supplement company to do their due diligence to make a safe product, and that doesn’t always happen,” said Seville. 3.) Where you get your information from is critical. Today there are many unreliable sources such as ‘Instagram fitness models,’ bodybuilding YouTube channels, and other websites that are unofficial that recommend products and supplement use. “I encourage people to use and access real science vs. bro science. Don’t trust what you hear at the gym and do your research. Using the OPSS resource is a very wise way to go about human performance improvement in addition to accessing the resources we have on base,” said Seville.
4.) Supplements are meant to supplement, not replace. “As a Registered Dietician I recommend that people get their nutrients from food, so a supplement should do exactly that, supplement. Not replace whole foods. For example, a protein supplement will not provide the maximum benefit to the user if he or she is not eating adequate energy from a variety of whole foods,” Seville added. Using the information provided on the OPPS website and utilizing the resources on other DOD websites such as hprconline.org, can help to ensure Airmen are consuming safe, quality products that don’t put them at risk. Supplement use has become common practice in recent years for individuals who wish to achieve high levels of fitness. There are a variety of supplements on the market for use, that advertise all sorts of glorified results and promises, and it’s important to know which ones you should be using, and which ones you shouldn’t. So how do Airmen and their supervisors know if a supplement is safe or not? By using the Operation Supplement Safety website. Operation Supplement Safety is a DOD initiative that focuses on getting military members the information they need to make smart decisions when it comes to consuming dietary supplements, energy drinks, weight loss supplements and more. “Some supplements tend to have promises on the label that aren’t verifiable with research. If there is a claim on the bottle that sounds really awesome, then it probably needs more investigation to verify if it’s a quality product,” said Capt. Miriam Seville, Ramstein Air Base Registered Dietician and Health Promotion Representative. Esper emphasizes need for military to ‘adapt’ to confront new threats, resurgent ‘great power competition’

by Charles Pope Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The emergence of Russia and China along with potential threats in space and from cyber attacks demands that the U.S. military adapt if it is to preserve “our long held advantages,” Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper said Sept. 18 at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space & Cyber conference. “Succeeding in this new era and winning that competition that is underway requires us to adapt,” Esper said in a 15-minute keynote speech at the Air Force’s largest annual gathering. “The strategic environment has changed, and therefore, we must change as well if we’re to maintain this overmatch we have held for decades.” The blueprint for success, he said, is the National Defense Strategy, a comprehensive document assembled by former Defense Secretary James Mattis that reshapes the military to address new threats from near-peer competitors while also continuing to prosecute the war on terror and ensuring national security. “If we are to remain the world’s preeminent military power, then we must change course away from the past and face the challenges of the future head on. … Everything we do must be aimed towards achieving the goals and objectives of (the NDS),” he said. “If something does not, then we should question it in the first place.” That includes putting a tighter focus on space and moving aggressively to
ensuring prowess in multidomain operations, or MDO. That effort calls for seamlessly and simultaneously combining weapons, sensors, data and people from air, space, sea, cyber and information with a speed and clarity that has never been achieved. Those mandates are not new. In fact, elements of MDO were prominent each day of the three-day conference organized by the AFA that attracts thousands of Air Force active duty, Guard and Reserve Airmen of all ranks as well as industry officials, congressional staffers and retirees. The day before, for example, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein presented a detailed case for MDO and how the Air Force fits into the equation in an hour-long address. Esper is confident the goals will be met. Progress has already been made, he said. There is no choice. “(While) the United States military was focused on on-going activities in the Middle East, our strategic competitors were actively modernizing their militaries, growing their power and expanding their influence. … China presents an even greater, long-term challenge,” he said. “What does this all mean for the United States military? Put simply, some of our long held advantages have started to diminish. Great power competition has once again returned to the global stage,” he said. Like Goldfein the day before, Esper suggested that succeeding in developing MDO, transitioning to the expected

The technical challenges require linking systems to collect vast amounts of data from an array of sensors from the various domains in a way the information can be assessed, understood and transmitted quickly to commanders and combatants to produce correct, coordinated, successful actions. Every part of the defense establishment is under review to make sure that full power and efficiency is being directed to meeting the goals of the NDS. New programs and organizations are part of the effort too. The proposed Space Force is the most prominent. And while the form, function and ultimate fate of Space Force is being considered by Congress, Esper said the Department of Defense is moving in other ways to address the needs in space. “Three weeks ago, I signed documents formally establishing the United States Space Command,” Esper said. “Setting up this unified command … is a critical step in ensuring we can defend our national interests in space. Space Com is now responsible for our daily operations, and running our space systems and ensuring that our space capabilities are integrated into our plans and operations around the world.” “However, this command alone is not enough to truly posture ourselves for long-term dominance in space. We must take the leap ahead and create an independent Space Force as our newest armed service,” Esper said. Esper celebrated the Air Force for its history and it’s excellence today. He praised by name “the exceptional leadership team” of Acting Secretary of the Air Force Matthew P. Donovan, and Goldfein, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. He also said Barbara Barrett, who is nominated to be the next Air Force secretary is “highly qualified.”

by Keith Pannell U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz senior leaders have been working hard to get housing residents answers and solutions since the Army-wide housing crisis hit the news in February. “We’re lucky here in RheinlandPfalz. I don’t believe we have a crisis,” said Greg Williams, Directorate of Public Works director. “Make no mistake, we have issues we work on every day, but we don’t have a housing-wide crisis.” Much of the housing consternation is specific to privatized or leased housing through contractors in the U.S., whereas that type of housing option is not typically an overseas function, nor available within the garrison here. However, as Williams noted, that doesn’t mean housing concerns are non-existent and given the age of many of the buildings — both office and residential — there are continuing issues with maintenance and repair of facilities, from water pipes to unit sizes smaller than comparable U.S. standards. The garrison team has put a premium focus on these issues with ongoing upgrades to the pipe systems and securing funding for near-term development and construction of new housing. In addition, projects are moving forward to renovate existing quarters to increase space; for example, modernizing the design of buildings to reduce
stairwell units from 18 to 12 by adding square footage to the units. “The bottom line is that we have an enduring obligation to take care of our people,” said Col. Jason Edwards, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Commander. “Soldiers and families in installation housing have a right to safe, clean and healthy homes, and with their feedback, we are identifying and fixing problems to provide the quality of life that is commensurate to their service to our nation.” The commander emphasized that Soldiers and families are encouraged to use existing reporting systems to request maintenance of their homes and they are also encouraged to bring any issue to their installation leadership and the chain of command. “There will be absolutely no reprisals for reporting,” Edwards said. “We want to hear the concerns of our community so we can ensure they are properly addressed. I very much appreciate the feedback that we have received and the opportunity to address those concerns.” To that end, since February, the garrison has: • Held two town halls, one each in the Kaiserslautern Military Community and in Baumholder. • Held a virtual town hall and answered as many questions as time allowed followed by answers to more than 60 questions posted on social media. • Added environmental information

to the garrison website including information and test results of radon tests and information on legionella, lead, mold prevention and water quality. Revamped its’ Water Quality Task Force established last fall to include housing resident and barracks representatives to give voice to the segment of the population directly affected. Established a 24-hour Commander’s Housing Hotline (0611-143541-3032) for issues that have not been resolved in a timely manner after submitting a housing work order. Placed a link to housing work orders and Commander’s Hotline to the front page of the garrison website (https://home.army.mil/ rheinland-pfalz/) Conducted 100% life, health and safety visits to all of the garrison housing units and barracks. Hosted media coverage through Stars and Stripes Europe and the American Forces Network to meet with the garrison commander and his housing team to answer questions. Provided a briefing and tour of family housing to highlight higher-level support needed to the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment. Completed construction and opened 84 new townhomes on
Baumholder’s Smith Barracks. • Made plans to begin 72 new housing units in Wetzel housing in 2020. • Produced a military family housing walk-through video for social media and website showing community housing, addressing tenant concerns and providing education on overseas living differences. Harald Kastner, Garrison Chief of Housing said one of the biggest education challenges is letting housing and barracks residents know that there are differences to living in Germany that they may not be used to from living in the United States. “We have to open a window after a hot shower (as a deterrent to mold),” Kastner said. “German pipes are old and if we don’t use a faucet for a while, it might run discolored at first, but it clears up. Once you get used to doing certain things, you’ll find many of these issues go away.” Both Williams and Kastner also want to make it clear they have an open door policy. For more than 60 years, regional vintners celebrate the event after they finished their work in the vineyards and wine cellars for the old season, and the new season with new wines will start. The fest is well-known for the little reconstructed wine village set up across from the Neustadt train station, the election of the Palatinate and German wine queens, the carnival and the biggest vintners’ parade in Germany. The wine village is made up of little framework houses called “Haiselscher,” (Palatinate dialect meaning little houses) and booths,
where local wines and food specialties are sold. A typical season specialty offered is “Zwiebelkuchen,” or onion cake. It is similar to Quiche Lorraine and customarily it is served with “Federweisser,” the first new wine for the year. “Federweisser,” has a cloudy color and tastes more like grape juice than wine, containing less alcohol. It is still fermenting and after a few weeks loses its sweetness. Lord mayor Marc Weigel accompanied by the candidates for the election of the Palatinate wine queen will officially open the “Haiselscher” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29.

Live party music will entertain visitors today on a stage set up next the Haiselscher. Each day, different bands and singers will present different music styles. Neustadt’s Hetzelplatz will turn into a giant wine tasting location, the “German Wine and Champagne Meeting Point,” made of little pavilions, will lure visitors who want to sample wines from the nine wine villages belonging to Neustadt and from the other 13 wine-growing regions in Germany. Highlight of the wine harvest fest is the vintners’ parade with floats, bands, walking groups, costumes groups and the Palatinate and German wine queens at 2 p.m. Oct. 13. GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, IND. The Department of Defense delayed the implementation of a policy that would limit a service member’s ability to share education benefits with family members. The policy, originally slated to take effect July 12, will discontinue the transfer benefit for members with 16 years or more of service. The implementation has been delayed until Jan. 12, 2020, giving long-serving members more time to transfer their education benefits to spouses or dependents. Currently, members who serve a minimum of six years and commit to serving another four years can transfer their education benefits to dependents. Those who agree to four additional years but who are unable to complete them because of a serviceconnected injury, medical discharge or receive a waiver can also keep their transfer benefits. If a service member has more than 16 years of service after Jan. 12, 2020, he or she will not be able to transfer
GI bill benefits. Purple Heart recipients will be able to transfer any unused benefits regardless of years of service. “This extension will be significant
for our Airmen, or any service member, with longer careers,” said Senior Master Sgt. Adam Oswalt, 434th Air Refueling Wing training technician. “It gives them more time to make an

Kaiserslautern continued its quest to reinvigorate its volleyball program with road victories over Black Forest Academy and Hohenfels in Kandern last weekend. Makenna Zielske’s clutch hitting allowed Kaiserslautern to take the lead in several sets after they had fallen behind early. Co-captain Rebecca Lagares led the Raiders in aces and picked up 20 kill shots. Co-captain Gina Popovic spearheaded the Raiders defense with several key digs at crucial times. Kaiserslautern defeated BFA 25-6, 25-21, 25-14 and Hohenfels 25-18, 25-8, 25-21. At Lakenheath, revved up by
24 serve aces and a masterful net game, Ramstein swept the Lancers in three sets 25-14, 25-13 and 25-5 to stay undefeated. Sophomore Gigi Stake had 10 aces and senior captain Isabella Coddington added eight. The Royals relied on an outstanding blend of leadership and talent as everyone on the team contributed to the victory. They attacked the Lancers at the net and spread out their spike attack. Sophomores Ahmarie Young and Sophia Sobczak each recorded six kills, senior Tamiya Bruce had five and Stake had four. Six conference teams will be tied up with each other this weekend. Kaiserslautern travels to Wiesbaden while Ramstein hosts Stuttgart, Vilseck and Lakenheath.

Ramstein inaugurates new tennis courts with sweep; Kaiserslautern splits by Robert Baldwin contributing writer The courts were new, so the Ramstein tennis team figured it needed to come up with something special to break them in correctly. Their performance was not just special, it was literally perfect. The Royals won all 18 matches against Lakenheath to set a new court record that will not be broken. It did not look positive at the start. Lakenheath’s number one player, Connor Sankey, surprised Ramstein’s Connor Markus 6-0 in the opening
game. But Markus took game two 6-2, then edged Sankey 10-6 in the tiebreaker to set the tone. On the girl’s side, outstanding freshman Kassie Von Eichen shut out Lakenheath’s number one player, Jocelyn Choi, 6-0, 6-0 to start the girls’ perfect streak. Other winners for the Royals were Troy Biehne, Colin Kent, Austin Emery, Collin Ritterand and Reed Gallagher in singles. All six paired up to take all three doubles matches. For the girls, winners were Allison Douglas, Madalin Svan, Lydia Woodfork, Kaiya Hernandez and
Ashley Emery. Those six also swept the doubles portion. The Royals host SHAPE tomorrow. At Kaiserslautern, the Raiders boys defeated Lakenheath 9-0, but the girls fell to the Lancers 7-2. Aiva Schmitz and Rebecca Moon were the girls winners. William Alsing had to go to a tiebreaker to defeat Lakenheath’s Sankey in boys number one singles. Other winners were Devon Holly, Lucas Petritz, Alexander Brunk, Micah San Pedro and Olaitan Powdar. The Raiders are in Spangdahlem this weekend.

Todman, Parks medalists again as Ramstein wins triangular golf match by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Starting the day in blustery, cold, dewy, unsummerlike conditions, Ramstein bested league rivals Wiesbaden and Kaiserslautern in both boys and girls golf at the Ramstein course Thursday, September 19. Ramstein remained unbeaten with the victories. “Honestly, the golfers struggled, I think, because of the cold,” said Ramstein Coach Nathan Brewster. “It was 38 degrees when we started with quite a bit of dew. After about two hours, it warmed up and the dew went away and people started playing some golf.” Last week Ben Todman blistered the course and rest of the field. But
this time he got stiff competition from Wiesbaden’s Clayton Shenk and teammate Chris Angeles, who shot his best round this year. Todman had 39 points, Shenk was a point behind and Angeles two points back. Royals Matt Miller and Micah Webb were fourth and fifth. Kaiserslautern’s Mathias Perrin placed sixth. Colton Lucas from Ramstein carded his best round of the year. Points are earned for birdies, pars, bogeys and double bogeys, not how far over or under par the golfer finishes. On the girls side, Ramstein came out on top with Harley Parks the medalist with 28 points. Both teams were in Wiesbaden this week. Results will be published in the next issue of the Kaiserslautern American.

Youth, balance lead Kaiserslautern girls to victory in cross country meet; Ramstein boys cruise by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Kaiserslautern’s girls balance proved to be too much for the rest of the eleven-team field as the Raiders won in Wiesbaden on Saturday. Ninth graders Kayla Ballard, Jillian Donmoyer and Piper Parsells finished seventh, ninth and tenth. Tabitha Farley, Bailee Buys and Angelica Perez placed in the top 21. There were 212 runners who finished. Nadia Rahman of Ramstein continued her outstanding season by placing second between two Frankfurt runners. Alexis Pierre-Louis, Sophia
Pak and Alexis Tri placed 13, 14 and 16. In the boys competition, Ramstein’s depth overwhelmed the field. Kaiserslautern’s Griffen Parsells won by over a full minute by finishing in a rapid 16:43 over the 5K route. Ramstein’s Connor Mackey was second and Kaiserslautern’s Ethan Cooper was third. Ramstein took seven of the next eight places and eight of the top 12. Jacob Cruz was Baumholder’s top finisher in 25th place. Ramstein, Kaiserslautern and Baumholder go head to head at Seewoog tomorrow.

Apparently he made the right decision. Dotson grabbed three touchdown passes and scored on a 60 yard interception to lead the Raiders to a 53-15 victory over host Vilseck. Darius Camp added three touchdowns, sophomore quarterback Nelson Rivas threw five touchdown passes and the defense kept Vilseck bottled up all day long. The Raiders, 2-1 on the season, are at Wiesbaden tonight. RAMSTEIN At Ramstein, senior Jason Jones set the tempo by taking back the opening kickoff 90 yards for the first of three first quarter Royals touchdowns. Ramstein dominated on both sides of
the ball and stopped Wiesbaden 45-6. Makani Stanger caught two touchdown passes from Carl Norman. Senior Logan Ridenbaugh caused all sorts of havoc with seven tackles and recovered three fumbles. Dom Arizpe contributed four tackles as Ramstein had a shut out until late in the fourth. JJ Little returned an interception 85 yards for a touchdown.
