The CFC-O is an annual event where service members and civilian personnel can contribute to thousands of charities that help those in need around the world. “Our goal this year is to raise $675,000 between the four groups and ensure that 100 percent contact is made to the members of Team Ramstein,” said Capt. David Milodragovich, lead CFC-O organizer. Squadrons will have their own CFC-O representatives, some with multiple delegates depending on the size of their squadron. “Those who wish to donate may do so after the campaign has ofﬁcially begun through squadron representatives,” Milodragovich said. “Unit representatives will explain the donating process while making contact with personnel in their units.” The CFC-O donation process includes ﬁlling out a pledge form with the organization’s name and method of payment, along with other basic information. Editor’s note: This is article No. 3 of 5 in a series highlighting the priorities of the 86th Airlift Wing. Strengthen and leverage partnerships with Air Force, joint and international partners. The third of our wing’s priorities directs us to embrace the synergy that comes from forming dynamic partnership opportunities with our fellow Airmen within and outside our wing and with our many joint and international teammates. By uniting our strengths with the strengths of our mission partners, we leverage our individual abilities to achieve

am a new commander here in the 86th Airlift Wing, and I learn something new every day about the great mission of this wing, its many different tenants and the many missions on our installation. The work being accomplished by so many is nothing short of amazing, and your contribution is vital to the success of the mission, no matter what your rank or position may be. With that, I want to explain a little about how I see attitudes through one of my family’s favorite movies. The Scene: The TC Williams High School football team (Alexandria, Va., 1974) is in Gettysburg for their annual summer camp. In addition to learning the normal football skills required to have a successful season, the team has to deal with adversity in the form of race integration. The team is divided and not practicing well.

The Event: The Caucasian team captain and defensive linebacker, Gerry Bertier, calls out one of the African-American defensive players, Julius Campbell, for not doing his part as a fellow linebacker. Bertier compliments Julius on his raw talent, but then says his attitude as well as his effort was poor. His reply: “Attitude reflects leadership, captain,” he said with a sneer. The Result: (Spoiler Alert) This caused Bertier to re-evaluate his own leadership style. Soon after that exchange, the attitude of the team captain (Bertier) changed, which, in turn, causes an attitude change in the entire team. Shortly thereafter, the whole team comes together to go on to a 13-0 state-championship season. It’s a true story and a telling lesson on attitude, because truly, “attitude reflects leadership.” How does your attitude help or hurt the morale and cohesiveness of your unit? Do you come in everyday with a “let’s get it done” mentality? Or, with the weight of the world on your shoulders? Everyone has rough spots and tough times (yes, everyone, zero exceptions), but in

order to contribute positively to your unit, your family and your community, your attitude must be positive. It is the one thing you can control among the many you cannot. Said another way — only you can determine how you respond to a situation, criticism or other incidents in your life that affect your mood, disposition and attitude. Personally, I try to come in every day with a positive attitude, a good sense of humor and the ever-popular witty sarcasm. Fellow leaders and first-line supervisors, make sure your Airmen, civilians and local nationals know how important they are, and ensure you are not negatively infecting your unit by your own attitude. All others — don’t let a negative attitude hurt the morale or cohesiveness of your unit. Find ways to be a positive influence on your unit, your family and your community. A great personal motto from my commodity flight chief, Capt. Adam Vance: “Negative attitudes are cancerous and poisonous while positive attitudes are contagious and are a force multiplier.” If you are having trouble finding ways to have a good attitude, come see me. 21st TSC staff rides analyzes D-Day logistical aspect Story and photo by Mike Bowers 21st TSC Public Affairs NORMANDY, France — Analyzing logistics and its impact on the June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion from the up-close perspective on Utah and Omaha beaches and other venues in Normandy, France, was the focal point of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s staff ride Aug. 21 to 24. Participants, who included selected 21st TSC senior leaders and subordinate brigade command teams, dissected the complicated logistic strategy used to support the Normandy invasion in which more than 850,000 men, 148,000 vehicles and 570,000 tons of supplies came ashore within 24 days PRIORITY, from Page 2

The 86th Airlift Wing also requires strong partnerships with other Air Force partners to be the premier installation the nation needs us to be. One of the most obvious examples is the outstanding partnership between the 86th AW and the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing. Through this strong operational bond forged between power projection platform operators and strategic airlift assets, Air Mobility Command is able to project global reach and global power through three different geographic commands: EUCOM, CENTCOM, and AFRICOM. As a result, the U.S. achieves global effects from this partnership that are unmatched by any military or civilian organization in the world. The relationship between the 86th Airlift Wing and the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing is another obvious example of our strong operational bond. As a result of their commitment, our team projects expeditionary power through unique communications and airfield capabilities. The 86th AW also maintains symbiotic relationships with Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe and 3rd Air Force staff beyond those expected in a command relationship.

By providing operational support aircraft, world-class facilities, dependable infrastructure, redundant communication paths, mission support services and quality of life programs, the wing enables the command to direct air operations in a theater spanning three continents and covering more than 19 million square miles. Joint partnerships. The central location of Ramstein between the U.S., the CENTCOM AOR and Africa make it a key location for other U.S. joint partners within the national umbrella. By maintaining stellar partnerships between us and our non-Air Force tenant partners, we capitalize on those strengths and resources that are inherent within our brethren services. The partnership between the Army’s Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the 86th Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility has had a monumental impact on the survival rate of wounded warriors, dramatically increasing the chances for critically wounded American service members to survive and recover from their injuries. As another example, our world-class communications personnel teams collaborate with multiple intelligence and national strategic mission partners to provide reliable, redundant communication pathways that enable the flow of data and command and control information between war-fighters worldwide.

International partnerships. Due to our geographic location, the 86th AW has the capability to build strong relationships with a large number of international partners. Our gracious host nation provides ample opportunity for leveraging our respective strengths and resources, from the tactical to the strategic level. At the tactical level, our personnel work side-byside in almost every office within the 86th AW to enable daily mission requirements. The mix between our military personnel, U.S. civilian employees, local national employees and contract personnel ensures we leverage a diverse workforce into a single mission-focused capability. At the strategic level, collaboration with other countries through our NATO partnerships and friendships in Africa has opened additional opportunities for training, development of national capabilities and increased interoperability. Our operations personnel regularly engage in flying training deployments with partner countries to increase awareness between operators and to facilitate future operations. Strengthen and leverage. One important aspect about the wing strategic priority is the focus on strengthening and leveraging partnerships, not just establishing them. The key to effective partnerships is they must be constantly cultivated and main-

tained. Having regular interactions between the partners to build trust, rapport and familiarity is crucial to the strengthening process. Additionally, the leveraging part cannot be overlooked. It is important to find that balance between partners that provides the most benefit for both sides, the classic winwin position where the output of the partnership is substantially more valuable than the efforts put into maintaining it. As one of many wing success stories, our emergency responders have a long and successful history of working with host nation partners to provide the most effective capabilities in protecting our personnel and ensuring mission continuity. Our firefighters plan and execute joint training opportunities with their counterparts in the local communities to share tips, techniques and practices so that when they are called, they can act together seamlessly and with

a high degree of interoperability. Although it takes time and resources to host and run these joint training events, the additional capability we receive under our mutual aid agreements and the interoperability that comes from touchtesting all processes in training represents an extremely valuable asset to the wing in the event of a major realworld event. As noted by American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, “Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision … the ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” In a time of increased financial accountability, it is crucial we strengthen the bonds that join us to our mission partners in order to reap the benefits that come from harnessing the talents and resources that everyone brings to the fight.

Panetta condemns Benghazi attack by Cheryl Pellerin American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta condemned Wednesday’s attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in the “strongest possible terms,” a senior government official said today. “The secretary also extends his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and to the entire State Department family,” the official said. Panetta joined President Barack Obama and Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton in condemning the attacks that killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens,

Foreign Service information management officer Sean Smith and two others, whose names are being withheld until State Department officials notify their families. Three other Americans were wounded in the attack. “The Department of Defense is ready to respond with additional military measures as directed by the president,” the official added. Army Gen. Carter F. Ham, commander of the U.S. Africa Command based in Stuttgart, Germany, briefed Panetta Wednesday on the situation in Benghazi, the official said. MilPDS presents contingency plans during upgrade In December, the Air Force Personnel Center will execute a long-overdue and much-needed upgrade to the Military Personnel Data System. The upgrade will take approximately 23 days (probably our worst case scenario presently) during which time MilPDS will not be available. AFPC has a team of A1 and FM experts developing contingency plans to minimize impact on promotions, PCS, pay, etc., and develop work-arounds for critical transactions that must take place. The Military Personnel Flight will be hosting informational seminars at the Hercules Theater on the following dates: 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 and 19 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 25 8 to 10 a.m. Oct. 30. There will also be a finance expert on hand to answer pay questions as well. While there are many personnel actions, not all will be affected. For the purposes of this shutdown, they can roughly be broken up in the following ways: 1. Self Initiated Actions — as summarized in the chart below, affected individuals need to take these actions by the suspense dates listed. Re-enlisting during December is covered here as well. MPF has been working with those folks who need to establish their extension/re-enlistment during December. 2. MPF/AFPC Actions » PCS Orders — these will not be cut during this time period. Therefore, we have doubled our efforts in the MPF to get ahead of the December DEROSs. A critical piece of this is that Airmen are turning in their documents on time. Short notice assignments (like humanitarians or Exceptional Family Member Programs) that come up in late November or December will not be able to move in December until MilPDS is back online. » Retirement/Separations — if a member wants to apply for retirement or separation during the month of December, they won’t be able to. Dec.

1 retirement dates and separations will be unaffected since they will have orders before December. Gen. Luis R. Visot, visited 7th Civil Support Command USAR Soldiers and civilians Sept. 7 to 9, here. “Within those responsibilities I have 16 operational functional commands,” Visot said. “Seventh CSC is one of those commands. I just came here to kind of raise my awareness. I’m always looking for capabilities. What are the capabilities that units that we have in the Army Reserve provide. In this case, it is the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Europe and U.S. European Command. It’s all about requirements and capabilities, whatever requirements that those higher headquarters request then we got to provide a capability.” This was Visot’s first opportunity to come out to see 7th CSC, the only USAR command headquartered in Europe, and visit with some of the command’s various units. Visot said the visit “gives me the opportunity to meet commanders (and) talk to Soldiers and see how they’re doing, because it’s kind of unique here in Europe the capabilities and the great Americans we have serving our nation. “They play a critical role because of their missions, the foreign consequence management responsibility, the civil affairs responsibility, with other capabilities,” Visot continued. Visot said he learned to focus on

one question, “Do we have the right capabilities to meet the requirements as the forces in Europe are drawing down?” He stressed that the 7th CSC plays “a critical function not just for EUCOM and USAREUR, but also for United States Army Reserve Command.” “I think we need to have a footprint in Europe because we have individuals that are working in those entities as military technicians and DA (Department of the Army) civilians, so we got to provide them an opportunity if they want to serve in uniform as a reserve Soldier, Visot said. “We’re definitely twice the citizen. Not only do we have the responsibility to wear the uniform but we also bring those important civilian acquired skills, knowledge, and an education that allows us to serve twice. We’re serving the civilian world and we’re also serving our military world.” On Friday, Visot visited wounded warriors at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. “It’s nice to have visitors,” said Army Staff Sgt. Joshua Forbess, from the medical transient detachment, USAR. The Decatur, Ill., native and former field artilleryman survived a 2003 Blackhawk helicopter crash in Iraq. “Visits like this are appreciated more than they realize,” said Army 1st Lt. Brent Heber, a registered nurse with Company A, LRMC, after Visot spent time with two injured service members — one U.S. Soldier and one military member from the Republic of Georgia, as well as speaking with Forbess.

Firefighters conquer fears, learn lifesaving skills by Senior Airman Katherine Holt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For 12 students of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Fire Academy, their final evaluation was a true test of personal strength and perseverance. “We were going into a constricted space with an inch of room while fully dressed in all our gear,” said Senior Airman Jodeci Mitchell, 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter out of Spangdahlem, Germany. “Going in there was stressful, but I knew I had to remain calm and patient.” The firefighters were given a two-hour time limit. Their task: rescue a trapped maintenance worker (a 50-pound instructional dummy) from a building billowing with smoke. With no time to waste, the incident commander took charge and got the team started and organized. “Being the lowest ranking firefighter with the job of the incident commander made me a little nervous,” said Airman 1st Class Christopher Hatch, 48th CES firefighter out of RAF Lakenheath, England. “But it didn’t matter who was in charge; we had a great group of guys, and it was really a team effort.” The students moved with purpose as they put together their elevated anchoring point and prepared to lower in their rescue team. In full gear, the first two-man team went in to look for their victim. After searching one floor, they came up empty handed. The second team was geared up and ready to take on the task. Garrison planners began the current project more than two years ago, Lindemer said. “Everybody who wants to use renewable energy is looking for space to put solar panels up on roofs,” he said. “Roofs are rare. But, we have some big roofs to offer.” The U.S. Army maintains huge warehouses. Some hold supplies and ammunition. Others are used pre-deployment or for community activities. Each one offers 36,600 square feet of roof space — enough for 900 panels. They will cover 10 roofs — six at ROB and four at Miesau — a total of roughly 366,000 square

“It was nerve racking being in there, but you have to do what you have to do,” said Senior Airman Preston Castillo, 31st CES out of Aviano, Italy. “This is something I never thought I would be doing, but I just inch-wormed my way around and took breaks when I needed to.” The second two-man rescue team found the victim, and firefighters working the belay systems on the elevated anchoring point were able to successfully bring him to safety under the set time limit. “The class did a great job,” said Staff Sgt. Winston Jerez, USAFE Fire Academy instructor. “To see them run a full operation after starting the course with only a little knowledge is what I love most about this job.” The USAFE Fire Academy, housed at the 435th

feet. That’s about the size of an IKEA store and larger than six football fields. The buildings, however, belong to Germany. So garrison planners worked through Germany’s federal real estate office to negotiate with local energy providers. Once complete, local investors earn 50 percent and the German government earns 25 percent. In turn, the U.S. Army earns 25 percent as a deduction from its energy bill. Depending on the weather, that could mean saving the Army up to $50,000 annually. The garrison also installed solar thermal panels on the Soldiers’ dining facility at Kleber Kaserne, to support the kitchen’s hot water needs, and at Wilson Barracks in Landstuhl. At Sembach Kaserne, where the garrison is renovating Soldiers’ barracks and buildings for new community services, renewable energy efforts are also planned with both thermal and photovoltaic panels for rooftops, Lindemer said. Construction and Training Squadron compound, is comprised of five instructors responsible for teaching three different courses: Silver Flag, firefighter rescue and emergency medical technician. The firefighter rescue course is a 120-hour course including classroom education and practical applications consisting of water rescue awareness, technical rope rescues and confined space rescues. “The students who are chosen for this course are the cream of the crop of Air Force firefighters,” said Tech. Sgt. James Hickman, USAFE Fire Academy NCOIC. “This training is a privilege and will help these firefighters gain new skills that are fundamental for their job.” Students also used different technical rope procedures, including a controlled zip line system, rescuing victims by ascending and descending buildings using rope and pulley systems. Additionally, firefighters were educated on the National Instant Management System, a federal program that standardizes communication for emergency workers in crises “Teaching repelling and ascending is my favorite part of being an instructor,” said Staff Sgt. Sean Cantrell, USAFE Fire Academy instructor. “Getting a student to work through their fear of heights and showing them what they are capable of is such a rewarding experience.” Students reciprocated the feeling. “I conquered fears with this class,” Mitchell said. “I never thought I would be hanging from a building upside-down, but I did it. We did it. Now we are fire rescue tech certified.”

86th AES Airmen test new airframe’s capabilities Story and photo by Tech. Sgt. Chad Thompson 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron tested their aeromedical evacuation capabilities on a new airframe Sept. 3 on Ramstein. The civilian Gulfstream III, or G3, provides the range and speed needed to reach different parts of Africa and Eurasia in a day, something the C-21 aircraft assigned here and some of the smaller aircraft can’t achieve without stopping to refuel. The time involved in refueling may sound like a minor issue, but when one thinks of the well-being of a patient who is being transported, every second counts. “It’s important for us to minimize the off- and on-loading of ... patients,” said Senior Airman Gabriela Perez, 86th AES aeromedical evacuation technician. “Each takeoff and landing places stress on patients, and any delays in a flight could hinder a patient’s care.” In most cases, when an aircraft stops to refuel, passengers must be off-loaded. If there are patients onboard that’s valuable time being lost. The C-17 Globemaster III and C-130 Hercules are the preferred aircraft used for aeromedical evacuation due to their range, size and patient capacity.

Lt. Col. Paul Yenter, chief of the air evacuation control team with the 603rd Air and Space Operations Center, said if this concept works it could save a lot of time and money for the Air Force, and it will also provide the European and Africa commands with a new capability and an availability to aircraft they have not had access to in the past. Africa’s unique mission lends itself to different injuries and illnesses, some of which cannot be handled in theater. Yenter said for this reason they

have been working on increasing their capabilities. “This is something that has been in the planning phase for more than a year,” he said. “Once the waivers to fly on the G3 were complete, we only had to ensure we had proper training, and then we just wait for the right patients.” Over the course of the last few months, the AES Airmen have been conducting specialized training to prepare for this flight. They have worked long hours developing checklists on how they would handle patients on

this aircraft. Yenter said many of the checklists created were based on the C-20, a similar make and model to the G3. When configured, these aircraft will be able to carry eight ambulatory patients or, if needed, about three critical-care patients. Within a few days of approving procedures, the squadron received word of two ambulatory patients in Africa who could not be transported home by commercial means. A nine-person crew, five aeromedical personnel and four pilots flew a one-day mission to pick up these two patients, putting their training into action. “I’m very confident with the equipment and the patient care we provide during aeromedical missions,” said Col. Meg Walsh, 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron commander. “The only thing we have been missing is the platform available for movement, bringing a new capability to our squadron.” The concept of aeromedical evacuation is more than 100 years old, and the theory behind it was to provide timely, efficient movement of patients and en route care. This type of evacuation has been used extensively throughout all major wars since World War II and has saved countless lives.

Alfredo Laboy, 435th BPC, explained that an invitation from the Azeris was facilitated by Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe through the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan. “It’s real neat that they have an interest in how we do things and for us to get the opportunity to conduct a mil-to-mil exchange,” said Staff Sgt. Bryan Carmean, 435th BPC. “They wanted this opportunity to work with counterparts … and this is just one way to further NATO interoperability.” In preparation for the IOC mission, 16 members of the 435th CRG completed more than 120 hours in the formal USAF Air Adviser course. Subjects covered included advising fundamentals,

interagency partnerships, interpreter support, in-country activities, strategic guidance, and cross-cultural communication, among many others. “Even the group physical training during the formal Air Advisor course was geared towards further international literacy for upcoming missions,” said Maj. Five weeks ago, the brigade cased its colors in Schwetzingen at their change of command ceremony. Soldiers then began the task of cleaning, packing and moving the headquarters from Tompkins Barracks near Heidelberg to their new home in Sembach, the former Air Force installation turned Army post just outside of Kaiserslautern. “Although the members of the brigade will miss the relationship we had with the Schwetzingen community, we are looking for-

ward to building new friendships in Sembach and the greater Kaiserslautern community,” said brigade commander, Col. Robert S. Larsen. The building of new friendships was a sentiment echoed by the U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern commander, Lt. Col. Lars N. Zetterstrom. “USAG Kaiserslautern is very excited about the NATO brigade’s recent relocation to Kaiserslautern and speciﬁcally Sembach Kaserne,” he said. “We hope the brigade, its Soldiers and family members have a smooth transition and take advantage of everything this joint community has to offer.” The ofﬁcial completion of the move to Sembach will be an uncasing of the colors ceremony in front of Brigade Headquarters on Sept. 21.

LEAP program helps Airmen to do what they love by Staff Sgt. Travis Edwards 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

hat if you were told you could take your Air Force job to an exotic country and it is not in a deployed environment? What if you could take that path and continue doing what you love? A few Airmen get to do just that — all they need is to be accepted into the Learning Enabled Airman Program. According to their website, LEAP is “designed and managed by the Air Force Culture and Language Center to sustain, enhance and utilize the existing language skills and talents” of Airmen. The program’s goal is to develop

a core group of Airmen in various career fields who can use one or more foreign languages. Nearly 500 Airmen applied for the program this fall, and their submissions are being evaluated. The program typically holds two selection boards each year. The next board will be in spring 2013. “This year was the first year LEAP has accepted enlisted Airmen,” said Maj. C.C. Masotti, LEAP participant and U.S. Air Forces in Europe country desk officer for France, Portugal and Spain. “This is a great addition to the LEAP force because NCOs are a major strength of our force.” To be considered for LEAP, Airmen must show that they

have an existing foreign language capability, and that they are willing to use that capability. That ability is measured by the Defense Language Proficiency Test, the Defense Language Aptitude Battery scores and any previous foreign language exposure. “Just test. If you’re not sure if you will do well and are even a little bit curious, take the tests and see where you are,” Masotti said. “There is nothing to lose.” One advantage of the program is the potential for monetary compensation for language knowledge. LEAP participants don’t receive special pay as part of the program, but many do qualify for the Air Force’s Language Proficiency Bonus Pay.

“The biggest advantage — the opportunity to use your own love of language and cultures to the benefit of the Air Force,” Masotti said. “You get to be a part of a program that promotes the immersion and continual growth of your knowledge base in languages.” Masotti recently returned here from a week-long temporary duty assignment to Dakar, Senegal, for a conference featuring African air chiefs as a translator and transcriber. Most of the air chiefs spoke French, her strongest language. “What an experience to be in the room of 12 different air chiefs from Africa, Gen. (Mark) Welsh’s (chief of staff of the Air Force) African

equivalents, was amazing,” she said. “I got to speak to them using their language.” LEAP currently has almost 1,000 Airmen and are about to conduct another selection board, which will bring them over the 1,000 mark. With only 1,000 Airmen in LEAP, they make up only 0.3 percent of the total Air Force, making them more exclusive than Mensa in America. From processing, building and handling cargo, to ensuring passengers are taken care of with in-flight meals, pillows and blankets to keeping the lavatories cleaned and serviced; the 721st Aerial Port Squadron Airmen provide full air transportation services at Ramstein and sustains three combatant commands. The data records and reports section and readiness flight plays a vital role in keeping the Airmen of the 721st APS mission ready. The readiness flight is responsible for managing and monitoring plans

and programs; they handle all facets of unit deployment manager duties and responsibilities, said Senior Master Sgt. Rich Rizzo, 721st APS squadron operations superintendent. Some of their duties also include being the unit security managers and airfield driving program managers. “We are the unit health monitors,” said Tech. Sgt. Boyd Shurett, 721st APS NCOIC of combat readiness and resources. “We make sure everyone is up-to-date with dental work, physical fitness and any training that needs to be done.” They hold self-aid and buddy care classes, ensure all Airmen are current on their chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear training, and weapons firing as well as conduct 10 physical training sessions a week. Having a pulse on all the training

in the squadron might sound mundane but there are moments that make it worth it, said Shurett. Being the largest APS outside of the continental U.S., someone needs to keep track of all the paperwork and numbers, that’s where data records and reports comes in. Data records and reports is responsible for reconciling billing for reimbursement into AMC’s Transportation Capital Working Fund, said Rizzo. “We check entries into the system to make sure passengers and cargo are properly manifested,” said Klaus Clemens, 721st APS superintendant of records reports and analysis office. “We take all the work load numbers from each section and add them together to give to AMC headquarters.”

Keeping track of 17,000 passengers a month and 16,000 aircraft a year are just some of the things the data records and reports section is responsible for. “Outside of the states, Ramstein is the busiest aerial port,” said Clemens. “We are the anchor of Europe and the Middle East.” The many flights that make up the 721st APS all play a part in the mission. Though they are their own entity, all flights work together and each one is an essential piece to the puzzle. “With everything the 500 plus Airmen, U.S. civilians and local national personnel of the 721st APS do, they always impress me with how dedicated they are to the job and the mission,” said Lt. Col. Melvin Maxwell, 721st APS commander.

London trip inspiring, motivating for Soldiers by Ed Drohan Europe Regional Medical Command Public Affairs For 17 Warrior Transition Battalion-Europe Soldiers, a trip to London to see the Paralympic Games was a chance to have some fun and see the sights of a major tourist attraction. For the three staff members accompanying the warriors on the trip, it was much more than that — it was a chance to offer therapeutic activities in a unique way. “We want this to continue to inspire and motivate those Soldiers who engage in adaptive reconditioning — adaptive sports,” said Christopher Ebner, WTB-E occupational therapist. “The whole community reintegration process is an important aspect of this trip.” The London trip began Aug. 28 with an early morning departure from Kaiserslautern. They returned early Sept. 1. Planning for the trip began in June with an offer of tickets from the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Paralympic Military Program coordinator. Ebner said he’d worked with them in the past as they’d offered adaptive sports training opportunities for WTB-E Soldiers. The Wounded Warrior Project and the American Red Cross then came together with donations that helped fund transportation and lodging expenses. Some of the Soldiers — who came from warrior transition units across Germany — are dealing with anxiety disorders that make it difficult to be around groups of people, Ebner said. One treatment for that

is to gradually introduce the Soldier to situations in which they’re interacting with increasingly larger groups of people. In addition to attending the games at an indoor venue that houses thousands of people, the Soldiers also took a city tour to famous landmarks that draw large crowds in confined areas. Ebner said the Soldiers coped well in the situation. Another therapeutic aspect of the trip was the opportunity to increase socialization, which decreases isolation, said Jason Durr, clinical social worker for the WTB-E’s Baumholder platoon. “A lot of people with physical or mental impairments or injuries turn inward … they shut off from the rest of the world,” Durr said. “This is helping them build relationships with their fellow Soldiers who are in the same situation.” The bus ride from Germany to London took more than 11 hours by bus and ferry, giving the Soldiers a chance to get to know each other. It wasn’t long before they were sharing stories ranging from their experiences on deployment to their experiences since arriving at WTB-E. Attending the Paralympics also sends an important message to the WTB-E Soldiers, all of whom are undergoing treatment for their injuries, illnesses or wounds, said Ryan Paddock, A-Company rehabilitation therapy technician. The company is located on Kleber Kaserne. “It helps give the Soldier insight. They see people with disabilities and see what it takes to overcome them,” Paddock said. “Hopefully it sets off a spark

in the Soldier’s mind and inspires them to overcome their injury and adapt.” One such opportunity came when the Soldiers had the chance to meet and talk to members of the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team, including former Soldier Kari Miller who has signed on to be the Army’s Warrior Games sitting volleyball coach next year. Both of Miller’s legs were amputated after a car accident 12 years ago. For one Soldier, that meeting was difficult. “I was having flashbacks and a mild panic attack when I saw the amputees,” said Sgt. George Peterson, a warrior from WTB-E’s Schweinfurt Platoon. Patterson suffers from Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress since being wounded and seeing his battle buddy’s leg blown off during his third deployment to Iraq. “Then I forced myself to talk to (Miller). That really helped out. She’s a great person and she helped me get through the day.” Since the Soldiers also participate in adaptive sports as part of their rehabilitation regimen, watching the Paralympians’ performance will help them become ambassadors for adaptive sports, helping spread the word to their peers who might not have a high opinion of the rehabilitative activities. “Soldiers lead from the front,” Paddock said. “We want them to take the message back that adaptive sports did great things for me, and it will do good things for you.” (For the full story and to see pictures from the trip, visit www.kaiserslauternamerican.com.)

RARO 12 is a NATO exercise focusing on forward air control and close air support capabilities. A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from the 81st Fighter Squadron, out of Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, are flying throughout the exercise to provide close air support for various forward air control training missions. The purpose of the exercise is to establish standardization and interoperability for forward air control and close air support missions for nations that may work together in contingency operations. In that regard, the squadron is working with the militaries of the United Kingdom, Turkey, Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland, Norway, the Netherlands, Latvia, Italy, Greece, Germany, France, Estonia, Belgium and the Czech Republic. “It’s imperative we train with our NATO partners to establish common standards and terminology,” said Lt. Col. Clinton Eichelberger, 81st Fighter Squadron commander. “We all need to be very clear of what has to happen when putting weapons on the ground in close proximity to friendly forces.” Because A-10 squadrons often work with NATO partners in contingency operations, it’s important for them to build partnerships and create standardized tactics, techniques and procedures in a training environment, officials said. That communication piece is the forward air controller or the joint terminal attack controller.” Air controllers must be able to execute coordinates for air support immediately because enemy forces can be established as threats without any given notice. The 21st can trace its logistical roots to World War II,

Nerveracking minutes passed as they kept the Soldier talking. “Stay awake,” he told the Soldier. “Don’t close your eyes.” Danny had an idea where the Soldier was. Meanwhile, Charlene called the military police, telling them about the pills and the Soldier’s relative location. “When we got there it was even more nerveracking,” Danny Licciardi said. “The MPs and the ambulance arrived about ﬁve minutes later.” The Soldier was taken to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and afterward went to the U.S. for further treatment. For their efforts, the Army’s Installation Management Command recently recognized the Licciardis as heroes. During a teleconference, Joe Capps, IMCOM’s executive director, told the Licciardis how proud the command was of their dedication. “What distinguishes a great leader is that they are intimately involved and care about Soldiers. They do not let time or distance stand between them and the people they lead,” Capps said. “The Army owes you a lot for that type of leadership.”

21st TSC selects culinary Soldier/NCO of the Year by Mike Bowers 21st TSC Public Affairs An engineer and military police food service specialist have claimed honors in the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s Culinary Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year competition. Spc. Lawrence Lancaster, 18th Engineer Brigade, earned top culinary Soldier honors, while Sgt. Dana Davis, 18th Military Police Brigade, was named best culinary NCO and overall winner in the competition. The event began with weapons qualification from Aug. 16 to 17 and ended Sept. 5 to 6 with a 12-mile road march, comprehensive board, 500-word essay and cook-off in the Clock Tower Dining Facility on Kleber Kaserne. During the cook-off, each of the seven competitors, representing the command’s three brigades and headquarters, was given the standard Army biscuit recipe. Even though the recipe card called for 100 servings, participants were required to recalculate and convert the recipe card to 25 servings. “We asked them to go above and beyond and get a little creative … maybe a cheese, walnut or raisin biscuit,” said Master Sgt. Mark A. Mansfield, 21st TSC chief food operations sergeant and Las Vegas native. The biscuit cooking was timed, so there was additional pressure. Davis was uncertain about her batch. “That was my first time doing biscuits,” said Davis, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, whose job focus is now food service administration. “I was just hoping they came out right.” “I believe trying to convert from 100 (portions) to just 25 was the most difficult. serving so many people, going to a small amount is kind of difficult,” she said. Lancaster was surprised he placed so high, especially since his specialty is meats. “Meats is where I’ve been ever since I’ve been in the kitchen,” said Lancaster, a Washington native. “It was hard, but at the same time, I wanted to see if I was able to do it to completion. My advantage was more than likely the ruck march … I lasted to the end and was the first to finish.” Both Soldiers will next compete at the U.S. Army

Medieval market takes visitors back to Middle Ages by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Bad Münster am Stein/Ebernburg will hold its 26th Medieval Market with jousting tournaments today through Sunday. In the center of town, a craftsmen market with more than 100 stands will be set up. The event will officially open at 5 p.m. today in the yard of Ebernburg Castle, and the market with vendors and craftsmen will start at 6 p.m.

Jugglers, dancers and musicians will entertain those in attendance. A torch parade will go through town at 9 p.m. The medieval rock band Zwielicht will perform classic, rock and folk music at 9:30 p.m. On Saturday, the official opening of the historical market with proclamation of market regulations will be at 10 a.m. to be followed by a fest parade through the center of town. A medieval camp set up next to the Nahe River banks will show off the life of the Middle Ages. Visitors can test their skills in archery and axe throwing. The stunt group Die Ritter will present a big jousting tournament with knights and horses at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A medieval juggler spectacle will entertain the audience with a fire show, magicians’ presentations, juggling and artistic performances at 9 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, activities will begin at 11 a.m. The big close out with more than 200 participants will be at 8 p.m.

he former mining village of Imsbach at the Donnersberg hill will be a mecca for friends of minerals and fossils. Under the motto, “Informing — Swapping — Buying,” the 28th Mineral Swap Meet will take place Saturday and Sunday in the Imsbach community hall.

Visitors can experience the diversified mineral world from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Visitors will have the opportunity to admire treasures that can normally only be found in the underground mines; more than 40 collectors from Germany and

France will show off these impressive finds. Swap meet visitors buying the adventure ticket will be able to visit the two mines in Imsbach, called Weisse Grube and Grube Maria, as well as the Palatinate Mining Museum. Admission to the museum is free for swap meet visitors. The special exhibi-

tion, “Copper — an indispensable material,” will display information about the copper mineral on posters, photos and information boards. Guided tours under the motto, “On the traces of mining,” will be given at 1 p.m. on both days to help visitors experience the former mining areas. A Mining Express will

Rodenbach hosts fourth culinary hike by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs After three successful years and a growing number of participants, the fourth culinary hike will take place Saturday and Sunday in Rodenbach. The biggest culinary hike in the Westpfalz will lead walkers on mostly paved trails to eight stations, where they can taste culinary specialties and wines. The 6 kilometer, stroller friendly route will be available at 1 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. “Several thousands of visitors in the last years prove that the hike is of high quality and belongs meanwhile to our annual calendar of events,” said Anja Pfeiffer, the mayor of the Weilerbach Union Community. Regional butchers and caterers will offer their specialties. Hikers will have the choice of salmon filet made on a Finnish Kota grill with a honey mustard dip, antipasti variations, wild game bratwurst, French red wine meat, pasta and tomato sauce, and arancini, a Sicilian specialty made with stuffed rice balls. Sweet delicacies include rusty knights with

vanilla sauce, dishes made of flour and poppy seed, and cakes. Regional vintners will serve a variety of wines and prosecco. Participants have the option to buy a wine pass for €5. They will get a little glass to taste wines at the price of €1 at each wine station. The passes can be obtained at the two information stands. During the hike, children can jump on a bouncy castle and get their faces painted. Couples can also ask for romantic wagon rides. A traditional Palatinate Night with live music will start at 7 p.m. Saturday at Station No. 8. “Our fourth culinary hike offers nice scenic views combined with fine food specialties,” said Rodenbach’s mayor, Georg Reuss. “I wish everybody some nice hours to relax and a lot of fun.” Participants can park their vehicles on two big parking lots in the Industriegebiet Nord (industrial area between Vogelweh and Weilerbach, along state road L367) and start their route here following the signs. General Dynamics Information Technology seeks a clinical analyst in Sembach, Germany to provide clinical expertise to support the Department of Defense’s (DoD) medical material enterprise standardization offices. Responsibilities: The responsibilities include facilitating and providing technical analysis of medical-surgical products, processes and procedures; conducting and organizing clinical product (evaluation) teams, facilitating clinical evaluations and trials; assisting CPT members in all related product evaluations and analysis; and facilitating/assisting in all related administrative areas, including documenting technical and clinical analysis results, and retaining all relevant documents for file. The clinical analyst will serve as a point of contact for industry and /or CPT members, conduct market research on medical-surgical product lines and manufacturers, assess market trends and market leaders, and conduct business case analysis, etc. The clinical analyst will assist the General Dynamics Information Technology team leader, the military designated senior logistician and designated senior clinician in developing related cost avoidance and product standardization initiatives, and facilitate the military clinician’s ability (within the MMESO region and across the military health system (MHS)) to evaluate current and alternative business practices, clinical processes, product lines and usage patterns. Education/Equivalent Training Required: A bachelor’s degree in nursing or other related clinical discipline is required. Experience: The position requires five to eight years of experience in a clinical practice; demonstrated experience in implementing healthcare standardization and business re-engineering of medical healthcare systems; and a strong understanding of the DoD MHS, including both institutional and operational environments. Experience in data collection, analysis, requirements analysis, documentation preparation and/or nursing experience are fundamental requirements.
