He sits at his desk cluttered with homework, notebooks and pens in an attempt to understand and learn how to interact with and relate to Airmen. safely exit your car? Collect your thoughts before you act, and keep tensions under control. Most importantly, be polite and professional. Should I call Polizei and military law enforcement? Should I exchange information? While the answer to most of these questions is “yes,” the severity of the traffic accident will dictate the answer. Recently, the reporting requirements for Air Force personnel in the KMC were revised to be more convenient

for Airmen and their dependents. The new rules enable compliance with higher headquarters regulations and German laws but ease some existing requirements. One key change is related to how you should report a minor traffic accident. In the past, reporting time to law enforcement for a minor traffic accident was immediately. The 86th Airlift Wing recently created a step-by-step traffic accident information pamphlet for use in the unfortunate event you are involved in a traffic accident on- or off-base. This pamphlet outlines the actions you must take if you are involved in an accident while liv-

ing in Germany. The new pamphlet will be handed out at the Kapaun Vehicle Registration office starting in September. So, say you unfortunately find yourself involved in a minor traffic accident. What do you do? This is a question all Americans need to have an answer to while living in Germany. Take a deep breath, and then carefully survey the scene around you. Evaluate your condition. Are you injured? Can you

Kuzmenko’s family severed ties with him for staying loyal to Ukraine. “My mother, brother and grandfather currently live in the conflict zones,” said Kuzmenko slowly with a slight pause. “I am the only one who is fighting against the Russian invasion.” Kuzmenko is attending the U.S. Air Force Kisling NCO Academy on Kapaun Air Station to learn alongside his U.S. Air Force peers. Kuzmenko served his country when Crimea was annexed. This led him to a new position with the Ukrainian joint staff as an NCO development specialist. Working with the new department offered him an opportunity — a chance to improve his skills with the Air Force. Kuzmenko entered the NCO Academy in August as the first full-time Ukrainian student. His studies at Kisling were part of an agreement

Defense and European and African nations to develop and train NCOs. “I understand that it’s very important to know the personal values and how to operate with this knowledge in our relationships, teams, environment and inside our units,” Kuzmenko said. Kuzmenko said he may be facing more than the separatist forces when he returns home to develop a Ukrainian NCO corps, which was originally modeled after the Soviet Army.

“We have to grow our military, and we will do it,” he said. But on the other side, he said there may be pressure and natural resistance to change. “I need to share the ideas I learned (at NCOA) in the right way … because we can’t change in one day,” Kuzmenko said. “I need to adapt the ideas to my nation’s mindset, environment and to our military experience.” Kuzmenko received his graduation diploma alongside 14 other Airmen Thursday.

While responding, you don’t notice the person quickly approaching from behind. By the time you do, it’s too late. The person moves to strike. What do you do? More than 100 members from the KMC and other U.S. military bases in Europe not only got the chance to learn what to do in a similar situation, but also how to teach others what to do after taking the Gracie Defense Systems seminar Sept. 1 to 5 on Ramstein. Gracie Defense Systems is a five-day instructor certification course that teaches modified Jiu-Jitsu techniques emphasizing the use of leverage and timing over strength and speed to make them more accessible to smaller framed individuals. Techniques range from preemptive boundary setting to physical self-defense designed to neutralize an aggressor.

“It’s important to approach any problem from multiple directions,” said Gracie Defense Systems instructor Eve Gracie. “This is just one of those options — (another) tool to add to the toolbox.” During the seminar, the participants learned different strategies to be more aware of their surroundings, recognize warning signs and escape potentially dangerous situations. “I had no idea what to expect coming in,” said student Kelly Bellew. “It’s totally amazing to me, because I’m not ﬁtness oriented. I don’t go to the gym. I’m not

strong, but this is the ﬁrst time someone has shown me that you don’t need strength and moves to defend against a man that may overpower me. I can use my leverage. It’s just giving you the tools that you may need to get out of any situation.” The participants in this seminar will have 90 days to train and practice the techniques. Seeley Sr. NCOIC, fire prevention As we are nearing the anniversary of one of the largest disasters of the 19th century — the great Chicago fire of Oct. 8, 1871 — we must remind ourselves of the importance of safe fire practices. Fire safety shouldn’t simply be a one-time affair, but instead a lifetime routine that we practice ourselves and teach to our children. For example, fire and burns are the leading cause of household injuries and deaths in the United States. “In fact, it is the third most common source,” according to The Home Safety Council, 2014. This is such an unfortunate statistic that’s compounded when you take into consideration how simple it actually is to take preventative measures. The following are some helpful tips that, when used correctly, will help prevent the spread of fire and lead to a happy and safer tenure while at home in Germany. To start, negligent cooking is the No. 1 cause of residential fires. Consider these simple steps: • Don’t store items on cooking surfaces. • Never pour water on a grease fire. Instead, close the oven door, or turn off the source of heat and cover the pan with a lid. • Clean the exhaust hood and duct over the stove regularly, and wipe up spilled grease as soon as the surface of the stove is cool. • Consider dressing for cooking success. Here’s why: An electrical coil on the stove reaches a temperature of 800 degrees Fahrenheit. A gas flame can reach 1,000 degrees. Your dish towel or pot holder will catch fire at 400 degrees, and so can your bathrobe, apron or loose sleeve shirt. Also, be sure your stove is not located under a window where curtains are hanging. Second, a space heater can be the most dangerous appliance brought into the home.

Third, candles are relatively safe products, but unless they are used safely and watched carefully, they can lead to accidental fires. According to the National Candle Association, more than 15,000 candle fires are reported annually. The bulk of fires are due to consumer inattention.

Follow these simple steps to eliminate or decrease their likelihood of causing a fire: • Carefully inspect your space heaters prior to the start of every heating season. • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that might burn, including the wall. • Don’t use extension cords with electrical space heaters. Plug them directly into a wall. The high amount of current they require could melt the cord and start a fire. • Do not store newspapers, rags or other combus-

Do not place lit candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else. • Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This is to make sure they don’t melt one another or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly. • Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Updated matrices have been posted to the myPers website. AFSCs by year group that will not meet the board include 2002 21R logistics readiness, 65F financial management, 2007 61B behavioral science/human factors scientist, and 61D physicist/ nuclear engineer. The board will still evaluate LAF and LAF-judge advocate officers for continued retention. Because of previously approved retirements and separations and ongoing voluntary program oppor-

tunities, the Air Force has met the overall end strength goal in the fields and year groups removed from the eligibility matrix. Eligible Year Groups/Competitive Categories Airmen eligible to meet the board include LAF captains in year groups 2006 through 2008 and LAF majors in year groups 2001 through 2003 (computed by total active federal commissioned service date) in specific AFSCs, unless specifically excluded. AFSCs and year groups vary depending on category, so eligible Airmen should review the matrices on the myPers website to determine if they are eligible. The board will also consider LAF-JA officers in the 2004 through 2006 captain year groups. At higher altitudes, breathing can quickly become one of the most conscious thoughts as it becomes harder to do. “A lot of people don’t even

know about cryogenics ... they don’t know what goes into getting (our product) out there,” said Senior Airman Jeffery Halda, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron cryogenics technician. The 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron cryogenics team helps ensure aircrew members can breathe easily at altitudes higher than 10,000 feet. On Ramstein, a cryogenics job is to receive, store,

maintain and issue liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen for aircrew members. “My job is to keep planes flying,” Halda said. “Without us, the mission wouldn’t continue, because the aircrew members couldn’t breathe.” Liquid oxygen can burn right through skin, because it is minus 297 degrees Fahrenheit, and liquid nitrogen is minus 321 degrees Fahrenheit. To ensure their

safety, the cryogenics team ensures they wear their full body coats, aprons, gloves, face masks, goggles and ear protection. “If you talk to most people who work on the flightline, they will tell you a common misconception about the amount of work that we do,” Halda said. The cryogenics team fills tanks full of liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen and then transports them onto the flightline to ensure the pilots have enough to accomplish their mission. Senior Airman Seth Bruning, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron hydrants technician, said that in an average month, they fill about 5,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and 8,000 gallons of liquid nitrogen. After filling the tanks, the cryo-technicians sample the

chemicals inside of them then send them off to a lab for a more intensive examination. The liquid oxygen is then stored as a gas since it is eight times more condensed than the liquid form. “We take a sample, let the pressure build up to about 15 to 19 pounds per square inch and turn it into gas,” Bruning said. “Once it’s in a gas state, we ship it to one of our aerial labs, and they run tests on the samples.” The Air Force standard for liquid oxygen is 99.5 percent purity; however, the cryogenics team consistently maintains a higher level. Cryogenics guarantees aircrew members will have fresh, clean oxygen as they complete their mission. Without cryogenics, any flying mission would be nearly impossible.

Recipe of the week: Meat strips with tomatoes and cheese Servings: 4 INGREDIENTS: • 500 grams tomatoes, peeled and quartered • 1 bunch green onions, washed and cut in rings • 500 grams pork, veal or turkey fillets • 30 grams butter • 1 clove garlic, pressed • 2 tablespoons creme fraiche • Salt and freshly ground white pepper, to taste • 100 grams gouda cheese*, middle aged DIRECTIONS: • Plunge the tomatoes into boiling water for just a minute or two, then immediately put them into a bowl of very cold or ice water to loosen the skins. Peel the skins from the tomatoes and cut the tomatoes into quarters. Remove and discard the cores and set the tomatoes aside. • Thoroughly wash the green onions, pat dry and slice into rings. • Rinse the meat and pat dry with

paper towels. Cut meat diagonally and on the grain, into strips. • Heat the butter in a frying pan and brown the meat on all sides. Add in the onion rings and brown for about 2 minutes or until they start to become transparent. Stir in the tomato quarters and the pressed garlic. Stir everything together and cook for about 5 minutes. When heated through, stir in the creme fraiche and cook for an additional few minutes. • Season with salt and white pepper. Grate the cheese, and sprinkle it over the entire dish. Cover the pan and continue cooking until the cheese melts. • Serve with Spätzle or band noodles. NOTE: If you can get it, use gouda cheese that has been seasoned with garden herbs. If you can’t find it, you can add mixed herbs of your choice if you want. You can also substitute the gouda with another soft, herbed cheese, such as Schnittkäse mit Gartenkräutern.

Capt. Spanky can do as the Romans do Hello all! I have to say, being stationed in Germany offers a variety of culture and beauty that many locations cannot. Not only does this location allow my humans and me to enjoy the wonders of Germany but also of other countries, such as Italy! In just a short, two-hour ﬂight, one can ﬁnd themselves in the amazing city of Rome! Just thinking about the sights, the sounds and the food that I could get there just has my little nub wagging! There is just so much to do. I could go to the Roman Colosseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheater. I could stand

on the same grounds where the gladiators fought. I’m not much of a barker, but can you just imagine my voice being heard over a structure that could seat 50,000 people? Or, maybe I could take my humans to see the Roman Pantheon. It’s the most preserved building of ancient Rome. I don’t know about you, but a building that has been standing for more than 1,800 years is quite impressive to me. It stands as one of the more stunning aspects of ancient Roman architecture. Also, did you know that it is a temple dedicated to all of the gods of early Roman culture? Then, there are the Roman squares,

or Piazzas. These squares are the access points to many of Rome’s other attractions, and since there are quite a few, I can just see myself running and jumping from piazza to piazza (even though my human doesn’t like me to run and jump). But how could I resist? I would be in areas that display more than 1,000 years of Roman history! I must admit that I am glad to have this opportunity to have such a wonderful city with so much culture and history in my backyard. I must be sure to take advantage of this great chance I’ve been given and get as much traveling in as I can!

A minor traffic accident is described as: fender benders, non-disabling damages estimated to cost less than $10,000 and no injuries. A major traffic accident is described as: any accidents with fatalities, personal injury, disabling damage (requiring towing), difficult to explain accidents or accidents involving possible fraud circumstances. Many factors in an accident change the way it should be dealt with by the parties involved, and that is why the new traffic accident information pamphlet is critical to guide your actions in the aftermath of a traffic accident. Though there are many factors to consider when being involved in a traffic accident, the most important key piece is to never leave the scene without communicating with the owner of damaged property or reporting the accident to law enforcement, whether the accident involves a moving vehicle, a parked vehicle, a pedestrian or someone’s property. If you drive away, even if the accident is not your fault, you can be charged with fleeing the scene of an accident, which could have financial and/or legal consequences. This new pamphlet provides all the information needed to assess a situation if involved in a traffic accident. The pamphlet

explains everything, including what your responsibilities are, how you should act, emergency numbers, accident worksheet, etc. Upon registration of your vehicle, you will be given a copy of the pamphlet. Don’t be a no-show by the 86th Medical Group Our goal at the 86th Medical Group is to meet the health care needs of you and your family by providing the best possible medical care. In order to provide the appointments needed for enrolled patients and their families, we need your help in preventing no-shows. September 12, 2014 GRACIE, from Page 5 be fully certified to teach. “I like teaching, and I like martial arts,” said Senior Airman David Stout, 1st Air and Space Communications Operations Squadron. “I think this is a great volunteer opportunity for me, something that I can get really passionate about and really enjoy doing.” Though physical techniques are the first thing students are taught, the instructors will also teach verbal and psychological techniques. “We firmly believe that physical self-defense is only a means for delivering the verbal... and the psychological self-defense,” Gracie said. “We feel like you have to understand all three components.” The techniques are designed to not only neutralize a situation, but to also do it without escalating an incident and helping the students remain in or regain control. Physical techniques ranged from blocking strikes to disarming an assailant, in both standing and ground situations. “I’ve only been practicing martial arts for the last three years or so,” Stout said. “It’s something that I found I really enjoy doing. It’s a great way to gain confidence. That’s not to say you should go around picking fights, but if you are ever put in a situation where you might be compromised, you can more than likely walk out of it. To be able to take that and give that same feeling to people is something I feel strongly about.” The classes are held on a weekly basis. Additionally, units or private organizations are able to request instructors to conduct training. Instructors will teach each class to the lowest knowledge base of the newest student. This allows anyone to join a class at any time, while also giving more proficient students a chance to become more skilled in a technique they already know. The classes are free to any person in possession of a valid Department of Defense ID card who has access to the base where the instructors will be teaching the class. World’s biggest wine festival opens today by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The world’s biggest wine festival, called the “Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt,” starts today. For the 598th time, Bad Dürkheim along the German Wine Street will host this traditional fest, enticing about 600,000 visitors from all over the world. Almost 300 vendors and ride owners will set up shop on the almost 485-square-foot festival grounds next to the “Dürkheimer Fass,” the world’s largest wine barrel. This barrel houses a restaurant, and if it were used as a barrel, it could hold 1.7 million liters of wine. The annual wine fest will be celebrated in two parts: from today through Tuesday, and from Sept. 19 to 22. The “Wurstmarkt,” or sausage fair, is almost 600 years old. It received its name from the fact that fest-goers ate enormous amounts of sausage during the event in the first part of the 19th century. However, the main attractions of the fest are its 36 little wine tents, called “Schubkärchler,” or wheelbarrows, because vintners rolled wine barrels on wheelbarrows up to “Monte Sancti Michaeli,” Michelsberg hill, to quench pilgrims’ thirst in the 15th century. Each year at the end of September on Michael’s day, pilgrims visited the little chapel on top of the hill. On the way up, vendors sold their goods. Then, church dignitaries no longer accepted this kind of pilgrimage. Market activities were relocated to the bottom of Michelsberg, and the “sausage fair” was born. In the year 1910, city officials decided to celebrate the fest earlier in September and no longer on Michaels’ day because of better weather. In 1926, the Wurstmarkt got extended by a day, in 1951 by seven, and finally in 1965,

the fest was extended by eight days. Since 1985, the fest has been nine days long. The historical wine tents (Schubkärchler) will open at 10 a.m., and the rides open at noon each day. There will be food and candy booths, fest tents with live bands and a wine village with wine tents. The Wurstmarkt will begin at 5 p.m. today with a concert in front of the Kurhaus (official spa building). At 5:30 p.m., a parade with musicians, vintners and officials will lead from the Kurhaus to the festival grounds, where the Wurstmarkt officially opens at 6 p.m. The event’s first fireworks display, called “Six Days Left,” will be lit by the current world champion of pyrotechnicians at 9 p.m. Tuesday, and the second one will close out the fest at 9 p.m. Sept. 22. Trains run from Kaiserslautern to Bad Dürkheim about every 30 minutes until 6 p.m. After 6 p.m., trains run every hour. Passengers have to change trains in Neustadt. Airmen pump up C-130 capabilities by Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs On Aug. 12, the 37th Airlift Squadron conducted “Wet Wing” training, which enables C-130 airframes to have the capability to defuel with four engines running as opposed to two. Defueling is when an aircraft is sent to a location to refuel other aircraft. Being in a central European country, Ramstein’s ability to have this qualification will greaten the mission’s impact as it is in closer vicinity to crucial areas. On a larger scale, the military will save money by using C-130 aircraft to transport fuel as opposed to larger aircraft used in the past. “By using a single C-130J (Super Hercules) to take fuel to austere locations, the military is saving millions in the long run by reducing the need of two traditional C-130 (short) aircraft,” said Master Sgt. Boris Brink, 37th Airlift Squadron aircraft loadmaster. “Not only are we saving money by using a C-130 aircraft to refuel, (but) being at Ramstein saves us money because we’re closer to most deployed locations than aircraft based in the United States. With this process, we are able to transport fuel to fuel bladders in other locations where they can disperse the fuel to motor vehicles, helicopters and smaller aircraft.” Brink said the training to test this process at Ramstein proved a success and was used during a recent real-world mission. “It’s a new way for us to do business,” said Maj. Dennis Hamilton, 37th Airlift squadron pilot. “The idea is that when we go to a

(remote location), we really don’t want to shut down two engines and get stuck out there. The training had all four engines running so we’re able to get the fuel to the user and extend their reach and the military’s reach.” The defueling concept is directed toward users in deployed locations as well as impromptu missions. “We’re getting fuel out to locations where they’re taking small rotary wing aircraft deeper in the world without runways, and our Airmen need to be able to do their jobs,” Hamilton said. “When we fly into places that are less developed, this capability makes (the mission) that much easier.” Using a four-engine defueling mechanism makes getting fuel to such places simpler and allows more room in the C-130. “What we’ve done in the past is we’ve had full fuel bladders in the back of the aircraft which take up two pallet positions,” Brink said. “With this new technique, we’re able to carry about 33 percent more cargo and offload fuel at the same time.” The ability to be able to convert the number of engines has been done in other locations, but is now allowed at Ramstein. The approval process may have been difficult, but it was worth it. “We were able to get a technical order changed to enable this to happen, which would be the equivalent to changing an (Air Force Instruction) for other jobs, so getting that changed was a big deal,” Brink said. With this new ability at Ramstein, military members can now complete the mission more efficiently.

Volunteers make history for 50th Ramstein Welfare Bazaar

he 50th Ramstein Welfare Bazaar is right around the corner, and almost 100 percent of the bazaar workforce are volunteers. Would you like to help? All the volunteer teams have a lot of fun, and there is something for everyone. Suicide Prevention Month: risk, protective factors by Capt. Rachel Wiley and Capt. Allison Valdovinos 86th Medical Group suicide prevention program managers Although no one is immune to the adverse effects of prolonged, excessive stress, some service members are at greater risk for suicide than others. Young, unmarried males of lower rank and those experiencing legal, financial, relational or occupational problems may be more prone to suicidal thoughts or feelings. Other possible contributing factors include lack of advancement, a sense of a loss of honor and heavy drinking; approximately 90 percent of suicides are associated with mental health and substance abuse problems. Suicide risk factors are psychological characteristics, behaviors or life experiences associated with an increase in the possibility that someone will become suicidal. The specific risk factors for suicide are generally grouped into three categories: adverse life circumstances, such as the loss of a job or relationship; medical and mental health problems; and cultural issues. Life Circumstances • Access to lethal means of self-harm • Suicides within the family/community • Career setbacks or disciplinary actions, loss of a job • Loss of or conflict within a close relationship • Financial problems

If they do, do not leave them alone, and take away any firearms, drugs or objects they could use to hurt themselves. It’s Wine Festival Season in Germany! It’s impossible not to love Germany during wine festival season. Although wine fests can be found around the region nearly year round, the largest and most well known festivals happen in the early fall, starting this weekend!

Wine Festivals in the Pfalz

Are you looking for something interesting to do at weekends? Right on your doorstep in the Pfalz region you will find a number of Wein Fests (wine festivals) taking place every weekend! These include Weinwanderungen (wine walks), where you pay one price to taste many wines from various stands situated along paths in the middle of vineyards. You will also find villages full of vintners that throw open the doors of their gardens, garages and courtyards to host wine tastings with food stands and lively bands.

The biggest wine festival in the world, the Wurstmarkt (sausage market), in the spa town of Bad Dürkheim, is the world’s biggest wine festival with over 600,000 visitors each year and it takes place on the second and third weekend of September.
