Airmen renovate Moldovan school, strengthen students' future Story and photo by Senior Airman Nicole Sikorski 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs SANATAUCA, Moldova — Sawdust filled the air as power tools buzzed underneath the sweat-ridden faces of workers. After a month of rigorous labor, the foundation for a stronger facility and NATO partnership has been laid. Airmen from the 435th Construction and Training Squadron and the 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron completed renovations to a gymnasium locker room at Liceul Teoretic Alexei Mateevici School in Sanatauca, Moldova. “When we arrived here in September, (the locker room) looked like it had been abandoned for more than 10 years,” said Staff Sgt. Caring for People forum set for Wednesday by Senior Airman Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs There are many programs to help Airmen take care of themselves and their families so they can focus on the mission, but sometimes those programs can be a bit off-focus. To help improve the effectiveness of Airmen support and quality of life programs, the Ramstein Integrated Delivery System is hosting a Caring for
People forum from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Woodlawn Golf Course on Ramstein. “The Caring for People forum is an important tool for the IDS,” said Jan Devitt, 86th Airlift Wing community support coordinator and IDS chairwoman. “The data collected is used to improve installation and Air Force programs.” A top priority of Brig. Gen. Jon T. Thomas, 86th AW commander, is “Care for one another.” Thomas stresses that caring for one, or oneself,
must come first so that caring for another can be accomplished. The biennial Caring for People forum supports this priority by offering Ramstein members the opportunity to have their voices heard about the programs and aspects of their lives that allow them to take care of themselves. Devitt says that is a more personable way of

To better concentrate their focus, the Ramstein IDS team will separate groups into the following times: • 9 to 9:45 a.m.: Key Spouse Group — key spouses • 10 to 10:45 a.m.: Family Group — active duty, civilian, local nationals, and spouses; families with or without children • 11 to 11:45 a.m.: Active-Duty Group — active-duty Airmen age 21 to 25 • 12 to 12:45 p.m.: Single Parent Group — single parents “The groups are broken down
because different populations have different needs and concerns,” Devitt said. Like other installations' IDS, the Ramstein IDS is comprised of members from the helping agencies outlined in Air Force Instruction 90-501, Community Action Information Board and Integrated Delivery System. However, the Ramstein IDS also includes members from the Adolescent Substance Abuse Counseling Services and Military & Family Life Consultants. The morale and quality of life of Airmen, civilian employees and their families are the key focus for the IDS. The information they collect at the biennial event will be given to
the Ramstein Community Action Information Board, comprised of commanders and other base leaders who have the authority to enact changes. The IDS and CAIB are designed to work together with the IDS collecting and compiling information for the CAIB to make decisions to ensure Airmen and their families are capable of caring for themselves and those around them. To help make sure the information they are giving to the CAIB is the best representation of the base demographic, the IDS requests max participation from the base populace. “The Air Force’s quality of life programs are fundamentally important,” Devitt said. “I encourage any-
one interested, anyone with a good idea, to be involved and help make these programs even better.” The ideas do not have to solely affect Ramstein, as 86th AW leadership will forward select topics to U.S. Air Forces in Europe leaders, who will then forward the major command’s collective themes to Air Force leaders. The Air Force leaders will review the topics at the Air Force Caring for People forum and implement initiatives if applicable, Devitt said. However, Air Force leaders cannot implement those initiatives without the ideas and issues collected from installations’ Caring for People forums. Though the appreciation can be seen on the local nationals’ faces as the Airmen work, one Moldovan student wanted to make sure the Americans heard it as well. “They have become (some of my) best friends,” said Filip Cobzaru, LTAM student. “We are all looking forward to the renovations; it was a mess before. We are very grateful for the help of the Americans; they have made things a lot better here.” The collaborative efforts of Airmen from the 435th CTS have not only built a new facility for Moldovan children but has also laid a foundation for friendships around the globe. The Adaptive Sports events are a series of activities scheduled throughout the year to include the Special Olympics, basketball, softball and now soccer games. “This was our first adaptive soccer game,” said Wanda Castillo,
Kaiserslautern High School moderatesevere teacher. “The past two years we’ve had adaptive baseball in the spring and are planning adaptive basketball in February. We’re trying to develop an adaptive program for our moderate-severe children within the Kaiserslautern Military Community. (By doing this,) we’re building a sports program for our children who have unique (needs) so they can get out and get active.” The games have become progressively popular with members of the KMC. This year alone, over 100 volunteers helped out by providing food, scheduling events and even assisting the students individually as well as cheering them on. Volunteers said the opportunity to help with an event like this is rewarding. “My little cousin is autistic, so this event really touches home for me,” said Airman 1st Class Rachel Walkes, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels hydrants operator and KMC Adaptive Sports volunteer. “Seeing the kids happy makes me happy, that’s why I volunteer.” For Castillo, the Adaptive Sports events have always been special to her. “Special (education) is a passion; I’ve taught for 18 years,” Castillo said. “To be able to (provide this opportunity) for the children to keep them active, it’s heart-warming.” By continuing to plan sports events throughout the year, the students are able to stay fit, have fun, and build resilience and camaraderie. Take hold of your safety Courtesy of the 86th Airlift Wing Safety Office Imagine you are 12 years old again. You were just a child with not many freedoms until that moment you hopped on your bicycle or skateboard and flew down the street feeling the wind on your face as your parent shouted, “Don’t get hit by a car!” Did you ever consider those giant metal “death” machines passing you on your adventures? Of course not, that’s why there was adult supervision. Now you are the adult supervision, and it is your responsibility to make sure loved ones are safe when riding. One of the easiest steps you can take to protect yourself and your children is to always provide a helmet when riding. You know this because you have this adult thing covered
and know that everyone, both you and your dependents, is required to wear a properly fastened, approved helmet on U.S. military installations in accordance with Air Force Instruction 91-207 of the U.S. Air Force Traffic Safety Program and Army in Europe 190-1 of the Driver and Vehicle Requirements and the Installation Traffic Code for the U.S. Forces in Germany. Wearing a helmet will not prevent someone from getting hit by a car but can greatly reduce the severity of head injuries if they were to have an accident. There are so many options when selecting a helmet, but a few guidelines can help you in selecting the right one. First, ensure it meets safety standards; there will be a sticker on the inside that reads CPSC, ASTM F1447, Snell B-95, the Institut fuer Zweiradsicherheit e.V. or the
Economic Commission of Europe. Once you find an approved safety helmet, make sure it fits properly. The helmet should fit level on your head touching all the way around, and it should be comfortably snug but not tight. When the straps are adjusted and fastened, the helmet should not move more than an inch in any direction and must not pull off no matter how hard you try. Skaters, skateboarders and kick-scooter riders also need to have properly fitted kneepads, elbow pads and wrist guards to further reduce the severity of injury. In addition to the proper protective gear, there are a few other requirements to employ. AFI 91-207 and AER 190-1 apply to military members and dependents on U.S. military installations in Germany but are equally effective while riding off the installation. Guidance
in these directions include ensuring drivers can see you by wearing highly visible clothing during the day and reflective items when it is dark or during low visibility. Also, ensure your bicycles are equipped with a white light visible for 500 feet and a red light visible from the rear for 300 feet. Don’t forget to add reflectors to your spokes, about 180 degrees apart, and pedals, front and rear, to further increase visibility. Other tools that will reduce the likelihood of a collision include general traffic and pedestrian safety tips. Skaters, skateboarders and kick-scooter riders have similar requirements to bike riders, except they need to stick to the right side of sidewalks, trails and paths. The use of portable headphones, cell phones or other listening devices is prohibited while riding. Always stop
to check for vehicles before entering the roadway, including at crosswalks. This is especially important where the cars are parked on the street since it reduces both the rider’s and the driver’s visibility. When riding bicycles on the roadway, ride single file in the same direction as traffic and follow the same rules as the vehicles: stop at stop signs or red lights and use hand signals when turning. Ride only on a seat attached to the bike and only carry passengers in authorized attached seats. When you talk to kids about riding their bikes, skateboards or scooters, make sure you give them the right tools to reduce their risk and prevent injury. So the next time you shout, “Don’t get hit by a car,” you know they will put on their helmet and ride safely until the street lights come on and they return home.

Armando Schwier-Morales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs POSTOJNA, Slovenia — U.S. service members watched as precisiontimed artillery and machine guns suppressed “enemy” positions while a Slovenian aircraft middive released munitions. Airmen from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing joined exercise Rock Proof V at the Pocek Training Range, Slovenia, bringing joint terminal attack controllers to coordinate and deliver close air support. “What we bring to the fight allows the (U.S.) Army to better execute its mission,” said Staff Sgt. Therron Bundick, 2nd Air Support Operations Squadron JTAC. “It’s important for us to be integrated with them so we can provide the best support.” Rock Proof is a bilateral training exercise between U.S. and Slovenian militaries involving close air support, live artillery, small arms fire and
marksmanship training. U.S. Army Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 305th Infantry Regiment hosted exercise Rock Proof V, which is also designed to coordinate direct and indirect fire with U.S. and Slovenian forces to certify units as well as improve confidence through experience. The efforts of the JTACs were not only to support the U.S. Army but also to enhance their own capabilities. Two Airmen from the 2nd ASOS completed their training certification during the exercise. “Rock Proof V for me is important because I get to train and develop,” said Senior Airman Gage Duvall, 2nd ASOS JTAC in training. “When we are in a real-world situation, without a doubt we need to be the subject matter experts and turn the ground commander’s intent into reality.” The JTACs controlled several Slovenian air force PC-9M Hudournik aircraft that provided close air support during the training. Armed Forces Entertainment sponsored a University of Notre Dame softball team visit to Ramstein during the team’s 10-day European tour, which is part of the sports program’s outreach and continued support to the U.S. Armed Forces. At RHS, UND players conducted a meet and greet and answered questions from students and members of the RHS Royals varsity softball team. “I really enjoyed the meet and greet,” said Maleece Wallace, RHS senior and outfielder for the Royals varsity softball team. “They gave us pointers and were very encouraging.” Following the question and answer session, UND players held a softball clinic. The UND coaching staff and select UND players instructed during the clinic, which consisted of four instructional sessions, two defensive and two offensive skills periods. “I like that we had a top college softball team come to help us,” said Jillian Holmes, RHS senior and outfielder for the Royals varsity softball team. “I think it’s very nice of them to take time out of their schedule for us.” UND players posed for photos, handed out sports memorabilia and signed autographs prior to departing the high schools. Wrapping up the base visit, the UND players faced off against the Ramstein Lady Rams softball team
in a scrimmage at the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center. The Lady Rams defeated the UND softball team by a score of 11-7. The Lady Rams and UND players shook hands and exchanged highfives while thanking each other for the opportunity to engage in the softball competition. As their tour comes to an end, the UND softball team heads home to wrap up their fall break and prepare for the upcoming softball season.

Stay protected while connected by Marisa Novobilski 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs “Every single person in this room is being watched.” This simple but alarming statement was the first of a number of eyeopening pieces of information provided by U.S. Army Europe Information Technology Training Program instructor Bruce Grantham during a series of Social Networking Site Awareness training sessions held Oct. 22 at the Vogelweh Community Center. “Because you are a member of the military community, everything that you do online is being monitored,” Grantham said. “And most of the time, those who are monitoring you do not have your best interests in mind.” Cybersecurity and cyber threats are a constant concern for the U.S. Army, and protecting the Army network and information as well as people is essential to mission success. The military alone spends billions of dollars and millions of man hours in protecting networks from criminals and potential adversaries, Grantham said. Protecting network infrastructure is just one element of cyber safety. It’s even more important for Army leaders, Soldiers, civilian personnel and family members to minimize risk and maximize online security. “We are the weak link in everything,” Grantham said. “You can have the best security and the most up-to-date technology, but the bottom line is that individual people are the most vulnerable links when it comes to cybersecurity.” Social media is an omnipresent force in modern life with more than 1.4 billion global users of Facebook alone, in a world with a population of 7.4 billion. As such, military leaders and cyber defenders emphasize the importance of responsible use of the Internet and social media during these community training sessions. Alerting military family members and children is espe-
cially important, Grantham said. An innocent post such as, “My daddy is flying to Dallas from Baghdad today,” can place a service member at risk for security. Throughout the training session, Grantham provided participants with real-world examples of Internet fraud and cyber scams. Using the example of “bait, hook and reel,” he showed how online “phishing” is very similar to catching a fish in a lake. Just as a fish is eager to take a worm off a hook, people make great “bait” for online criminals who appeal to a victim’s desire for love, money or assistance. Grantham also provided participants links to a number of websites and tips they can use to help stay aware of current Internet criminal activity. Department of Defense sites such as www.defense.gov and the Army social media site www.army.mil/socialmedia are great places to start, Grantham said. He also recommends that users ensure they keep their computer operating systems up to date and install anti-virus software. The Department of the Army is also stressing the importance of online safety during its third annual Cybersecurity Awareness Month observation throughout October. This year’s theme, “Stay protected while connected,” coincides with National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. By creating a culture of awareness, cyber defenders throughout the government service aim to increase online operational readiness. “Being aware of the threats and understanding that everything you do is public will force you to think twice online,” Grantham concluded. “The Internet is an archive of your life. Ingredients (for 4 people) For the soup: 1 medium sized pumpkin 4 cups of milk 1 cup of cream 1/4 teaspoon of salt and ground white pepper, if desired also a 1/4 teaspoon of sugar And a little bit of cayenne pepper For the main dish: 1 slice of Kassler per person (you will find it on the economy) 3 medium sized potatoes per person (best will be when you get the so called festkochend potatoes on the economy for salted potatoes) 1 teaspoon of salt Red cabbage (see our recipe from last week) Tablespoon of margarine
Preparation First, peel and cut the potatoes into 4 pieces of the same size. Then boil the potatoes in salted water (potatoes have to be covered with water) until they are cooked through. Meanwhile, cut the top off the pumpkin and remove the seeds (don’t throw away the seeds, we will slightly roast the seeds in a pan without fat on low heat to add them to our soup) and carve out the flesh. for serving the soup in. In a pot, bring the milk with the pumpkin to a boil, then add the seasoning and spices. Reduce the heat to low and let it slightly simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. At the end, add the cream to the soup, however do not put it on the stove again. Process the soup in a blender and serve it in the now empty pumpkin serving the roasted pumpkin seeds on the side so people can decide how many they would like to have in the soup. In a sauce pan, melt the margarine and roast the slices of Kassler on both sides. Place a lid onto the pot and reduce the heat. If you have bought a whole piece of Kassler, cut slices about 1” thick. Meanwhile the potatoes should be done. Serve the Kassler on a plate, the potatoes in a bowl and the red cabbage in another bowl.

7th MSC hosts town hall meeting with USAR CXO by Sgt. 1st Class Matthew Chlosta 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs A key U.S. Army Reserve executive officer held a town hall meeting to speak with Soldiers and civilians from the 7th Mission Support Command Oct. 22 on Daenner Kaserne. James Balocki visited with civilian and military leaders during his weeklong trip, including the Army Reserve Engagement Cell at U.S. Army Europe, the U.S. Army Europe G8, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command Deputy Chief of Staff, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Installation Management CommandEurope and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. He also was interviewed by Stars and Stripes and the American Forces Network. After the town hall, Balocki explained the main reason for his first visit to the 7th MSC. “I have this really strong
enduring belief that leaders need to be where the troops are … and especially right now when our nation is going through a very difficult time with the budget and the uncertainty,” Balocki said. “We need to be here to reassure them and to hear their concerns.” He also spoke about the unique mission of the 7th MSC as the only U.S. Army Reserve command headquartered overseas and attached to an active component combatant commander with USAREUR. “They bring all these unique civilian skills,” Balocki said. “They’ve got this broad set of skills.” There are many Soldiers in the 7th MSC that are multilingual, and they see missions through a military and civilian perspective, Balocki added. “The chance to serve in Europe, I don’t think there’s anything better,” Balocki said. “This laboratory is for our young leaders to be able to get

Michael Pintagro 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs A sane junior NCO rises before four in the morning, triple-checks the decorations adorning his Army Service Uniform and refreshes his knowledge of obscure Army programs only for pretty compelling reasons. An opportunity to join the prestigious Sergeant Morales Club provided seven enlisted leaders from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command and 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command all the incentive they needed. The NCOs competed for entry into the club the morning of Oct. 22 at Kleber Kaserne and Rhine Ordnance Barracks, two regional TSC hubs. The culminating board and Army Physical Fitness Test marked the end of an equally arduous and rewarding journey for some, and a
challenging “gut check” for others. Candidates serving with organizations across the twostar command, including the 16th Sustainment Brigade, 18th Military Police Brigade and the 30th Medical Brigade as well as the 10th AAMDC reported to a board composed of distinguished senior enlisted leaders spanning the breadth of the TSC and chaired by its command sergeant major. SMC boards differ significantly from conventional competitive and promotion boards. Candidates typically analyze and assess situations, integrate doctrinal and programmatic knowledge, and draw on personal experience rather than respond to direct informational questions. “It’s a lot more situational,” said Sgt. 1st Class Nelson Rivas, treasurer for the Rheinland-Pfalz chapter of the SMC and a key organizer of the October board. “Knowing the ‘book’ answer

is good; but sometimes as a leader you need to adjust to a situation. You have to go beyond ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers. There’s not a regulation that tells you per se exactly how to handle a situation.” Candidates understand the dynamic as do the SMC members who administer the program. “The questions are based on leading styles and abilities rather than doctrine,” said Staff Sgt. Christopher Lynch, a Morales Club candidate who serves with the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th SB. “You have to dig into the situation a lot deeper. There’s not a study guide that will give you the answers. You have to know the doctrine and you have to know how to apply it effectively; how to use it to take care of your Soldiers.” Due to their depth, complexity and comprehensive scope, SMC boards also take much longer than others. Candidates might disappear into a board room and emerge an hour or more later, exhausted from tension, anxiety and the protracted physical rigidity of sitting “at attention” for 50 or 70 minutes. Lengthy and challenging oral examinations test candidates’ poise, ingenuity and mental agility. They also allow leaders to achieve much greater depth of understanding as they evaluate aspiring club members. “Each candidate is in there for an extended amount of time, so they really get an idea of your leadership traits,” Lynch said. While “boarding” candidates struggle to resolve leadership dilemmas posed by CSMs and senior SMC officials, their battle buddies endure long, tense waits for their turn. “It feels like an eternity,” said Staff Sgt. Ivan Rodriguez, cargo specialist and SMC candidate serving with the 18th CSSB. “You’re waiting for hours, and it feels like days.” Fortunately for anxious candidates, aspiring SMC members learn their fate immediately following the

board. Presiding senior leaders and board members personally congratulate candidates recommended for induction and offer encouragement and guidance for NCOs who don’t make the cut. All candidates receive constructive criticism, professional development advice and praise in measures commensurate with their performance and accomplishments throughout the board. The Oct. 22 board selected four candidates for induction. Membership is a process rather than an event. “It starts with the first sergeant’s recommendation,” Rivas said. “Then the initial phase takes place at battalion level, the intermediate phase at brigade and the final selection at TSC level.” The U.S. Army Europe command sergeant major confers final approval on nominees who meet all requirements and complete the boarding process across echelons. The process begins modestly enough in most cases. An NCO might attend organizational meetings, participate in leader development sessions, support community and charity events or seek mentorship from SMC members. Formal nomination by the candidate’s first sergeant triggers a subsequent period of intensive preparation punctuated by board appearances at echelon, some including
demonstrations of weapons knowledge in addition to the APFT. “It can take months, it can take a year,” Rivas said. “What helps you get through it is the shared experience. I used it as a motivational tool for my own Soldiers. I hadn’t been to a board in 13 years, so it helped motivate them to see me preparing just like they were. It also motivated me to set the example.” The club emphasizes community engagement as well as enlisted leadership. “I want to be part of a group that’s giving back to the community and strengthening the NCO corps,” said Sgt. Phillip Smith, military policeman and SMC candidate serving with the 615th MP Company, 709th MP Battalion, part of the TSC’s 18th MP Brigade. “I like the professional development part too. You spend a lot of time with senior NCOs as part of NCO professional development and you learn a lot. You can pick their brain about things you want to learn about or things you’re unsure about. “As NCOs, we always want to lead from the front and set the best example possible for our Soldiers,” Rodriguez continued. “As part of the SMC, you always have that base of knowledge, and you also have senior members to help you. 22nd Army chief of chaplains joins KMC for prayer, pancakes
T
he 22nd Army chief of chaplains gathered with key leaders and military personnel across the KMC for an energetic, festive and musical Rheinland-Pfalz community prayer breakfast Oct. 21 at the Ramstein Officers’ Club. Retired Maj. Gen. Douglas L. Carver, who currently serves as the executive director of chaplaincy services for the North American Mission Board, joined leaders, Soldiers, Airmen and civilians for prayer, song and hearty cuisine. Maj. Gen. Duane A. Gamble, commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, celebrated diversity in faith during his opening remarks.
“There are a lot of different faiths represented in the military services, and we don’t all think exactly alike,� Gamble said. Gamble continued to highlight the value of diversity and contrast in faiths. “In fact, some of our beliefs contradict each other in terms of the spirituality of life,� he said. “It’s diverse. It’s complicated. And I think that’s pretty cool!� The prayer breakfast is a traditional function conducted in communities throughout the military. At this event, community members from various faiths and congregations gathered for a breakfast, followed by fellowship, prayer and a celebration of the role of faith in the military services. A series of chaplains followed the commanding general and preceded the guest speaker to the podium, offering prayers, reflec-

On this day Germans visit cemeteries to light candles and decorate the gravesites of deceased family members and friends with flowers or wreaths made of fir tree branches, pine cones and dried flowers. This year, Nov. 1 is a Sunday, but if All Saints Day doesn’t happen to fall on a Sunday, it is observed as an official holiday in the German states where there is mainly a Catholic population, such as Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland, Baden-Wuerrtemberg and Nordrhein-Westfalen. In the other states, the religious holiday is a regular workday. The origin of All Saints Day dates back to May 13, 610, when Pope Boniface IV dedicated a special day to all saints who never received their own memorial day. Old calendars show that almost every day is dedicated to a saint. In the Pantheon in Rome, Pope Boniface honored all saints who lived with Christian ideals in all countries of the world. In 1835, Pope Gregor IV moved All Saints Day to Nov. 1. November is known as the month of remembrance, contemplation and mourning. Protestants remember the dead on “Totensonntag,” Nov. 22. It

Zweibruecken sponsors Halloween fest Zweibruecken celebrates its traditional Halloween spectacle Saturday. Pumpkin carving starts at 11 a.m. at Schlossplatz. Pumpkin soup will be served at noon. Children can have their faces painted from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monsters, ghosts, witches and vampires will be welcomed at 5 p.m. The dance group Traumzeit will accompany people in costumes to Schlossplatz where the fest officially opens at 6 p.m. with fire magicians and culinary specialties. Children can take a walk through haunted tents and participate in a drawing contest.

RMS participates in DODEA’s Virtual Town Hall Meeting Ramstein Middle School was one of six schools worldwide chosen to participate in the Department of Defense Education Activity’s recent Virtual Town Hall Meeting. Tom Brady, director of the DODEA, played host to the hour-long Google Hangout event. Each school selected representatives who put together a list of questions to ask the school system’s boss. The RMS participants included the principal; a sixth-grade teacher; three parents, one of whom is the school advisory committee presi-
dent; and an eighth-grade student. Sequinn Lee, a reading and language arts teacher, was impressed on how the DODEA’s senior leadership took time out to hear from the learning community. “I commend Mr. Brady for his efforts to have a true connection with our parents, staff and students … provided an opportunity for DODEA stakeholders to voice their concerns, ask questions and inform the director about vital issues affecting our students and districts,” Lee said.

Trick or treat: Easy Halloween food crafts by Sydney Gallimore MilitaryInGermany.com blogger There are many things to love about Halloween — the costumes, the decorations and most of all, the food. These Halloween food crafts are perfect for getting you into the Halloween spirit. Best of all, they’re easy for kids and adults to make, and eat, too. White Chocolate Banana Ghost Pops A fun and relatively healthy snack that both adults and kids will adore. Start to finish: 2-3 hours; Servings: 4 • 1 banana • 4 popsicle sticks • 1 cup white chocolate • Wax paper • 8 mini chocolate chips Cut each banana in half lengthwise, and then in half to make four quarters. Insert a popsicle in the base. Place them in the freezer on a wax paperlined cookie sheet for about 30 minutes or until hardened. Meanwhile, melt the white chocolate in the microwaveable bowl or coffee mug for 30 seconds at a time, stirring until soft and melted. Allow to cool slightly. Dip the bananas into the white chocolate and then set them back on the wax paper to harden. While the chocolate sets,
quickly use the mini chocolate chips to make “ghost eyes” before the white chocolate hardens. Freeze your pops for 1 to 2 hours, or until frozen. Jack O’Lantern Krispies Treats A festive twist on a classic treat. Start to finish: 40 minutes; Servings: 12 • 6 cups of puffed rice cereal • 3 tablespoons butter • ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract • 5 ½ cups of mini marshmallows • Orange food coloring, mini tootsie rolls and your favorite candy for decorations. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the vanilla extract and the marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Add the food coloring until it reaches the desired orange color. Add cereal and stir until completely combined. Take pot off the heat and allow mixture to cool. Form the treats into medium-sized pumpkins. Press a tootsie roll into the top to act as the stem. Add candy for decorations and enjoy. Breadstick Bones A fun, savory treat that’s perfect for hors-d’oeuvres trays, lunchboxes and after-school snacks. Start to finish: 30 minutes; Servings: 12 • 1 tube of refrigerated breadstick dough
• Salt, to taste • 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese • 1 tablespoon butter, melted • Marinara sauce for dipping Unroll the tube of dough and separate the breadstick pieces and pre-heat oven according to dough instructions. Roll each breadstick and use scissors to cut a ½ inch slit in the center of each end of the breadstick. Place on an ungreased baking sheet, spread out the ends a little and brush with butter. Sprinkle each breadstick with Parmesan cheese and the desired amount of salt. Bake at the recommended temperature for about 12 to 14 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with marinara dipping sauce. Peanut Butter and Jelly Halloween Sandwiches A fun way to brighten up your child’s lunchbox. Start to finish: 5 minutes; Servings: 1 • 2 slices of bread • Peanut butter • Jelly of your choice • Mini chocolate chips • Your favorite Halloween-themed cookie cutter Make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to your liking. When finished, use the cookie cutter to turn your sandwich into a fun Halloweenthemed lunch.

Unit-level flag football teams from across Europe will face off in the Installation Management Command Europe flag football championships today through Sunday. Responsibilities/Duties • Provide active leadership in procurement and growth of financial and other in-kind resources necessary for center operations. • Recruit, supervise, train, develop, and recognize staff and volunteers. • Oversee the successful planning, coordination, and execution of daily morale-enhancing programs within an established budget. • Seek, develop, maintain, and improve relationships with the US military and with persons, organizations, and groups that support the center’s many programs. • Ensure that the center always remains clean, safe, welcoming, and well-maintained and that all assets are functional and up-to-date. • Prepare, review, and deliver financial, operational, and statistical reports within established deadlines. • Interact with patients and familiarize them with the center and its many offerings.
Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field. • 3-5 years experience in a supervisory role. Ability to effectively manage, lead, motivate, mentor, and develop employees and volunteers. • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills. • Demonstrated initiative/self-motivation, attention to detail, and organizational and time management skills. • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communications as well as knowledge of various software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. • Willingness and ability to regularly work non-standard hours (late evenings, holidays and weekends). • Must be a strong advocate of the USO’s mission to support active duty military and their families. • Public speaking experience is preferred. • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. • Must have valid USAREUR driver’s license. Details: This position is located on Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Preference will be given to local candidates within commuting distance. Relocation assistance is not provided for this position. Resume and cover letter are required for full consideration.
